We have cruised with Uniworld two other times on the Danube mostly with some time on the Main River This cruise was quiet with only a limited number of excursions compared to the other cruises we took with Uniworld Embarkation and disembarks was smooth and very nice The layout of the boat was fine but the « fitness « room was so tiny and crowded that I was lucky no one ever wanted to use it when I was there. The lounge was very nice but we missed having a library or game room for the evening hours. To follow are my suggestions to make the experience better for future cruise guests I am a vegetarian and when we made our reservation we told everyone. When we embarked one of the chefs or sous chefs should have spent 5 Minutes with me to see my parameters for food choices, as was done on previous cruises. The breakfast and lunch buffets were spectacular l always found good food to eat with enough cheese and other options for protein intake. Dinner fell short on that issue. The « eat light » or vegetarian options were not what I would consider choices for myself. So the first two nights I asked for different vegetables so I had food that I enjoyed and met my needs. These requests eere met with a lack of understanding of what I needed to eat but we’re able to accommodate me. We finally found an incredible waiter,Armindo, who talked to me about what I liked to eat and always helped prepare good nutritious food for me. After meeting him we reserved a table to be in his area and all was good. This issue could have been avoided if the chef just spent 5 Minutes with me to understand what I could eat. Fine dining on River cruises is a very important part of the trip, so please for future passengers make a little effort for those people with special food requirements before the first dinner As for shore excursions, I know there is limited things to see and do as in the Douro valley it is all about Port and wine. Which was fine. The excursion to Salamanca was a waste of time for us. We spent as much time riding back and forth on the bus as we did there. The comfort break was helpful for using the bathrooms but we did not need coffee, tea, and pastries as we just finished breakfast two hours before this stop. If we had not wasted time being fed again we could have spent more time in the town. So for future guests think hard about this trip. It Takes a long getting there and you have limited time to explore the city although the cathedrals were lovely to see but travelers need to weigh travel time verses time in Salamanca The other tours were mostly excellent. The Douro museum and the vineyard visit with dinner were great as was the archeological hike and e bike to the ocean. Since the boat could not travel at night we did spend a lot of time “relaxing” while we cruised the Douro. So if you want a quiet relaxing cruise this is for you. The reception staff excellent especially Pelipe All staff excellent as was service on board. Read Less

Started Wed June 13 in Lisboa. Met at airport and transferred and given handout for restaurants etc around hotel. Site representative and most folks start the next day. We visited the zoo on Thurs. Briefing was Thurs night. Fri was city tour in am and on own in PM (too few picked extra cost optional). Sat was on own or optional extra cost guided tour. Sun transforms to visit with stop at Coimbra Univ. Then finally on ship at Cais Gai. Trip ok. Problem for me is other than visits to Port vineyards and hearing about port wine, there didn't seem much of interest on the Douro. Maybe that is why the start in Lisboa and day trip to Salamanca. And after getting to Salamanca we were mostly by ourselves. Memorable events were the visit to the Archeolgical site at Coa (NOT for folks with mobility issues), going through the Carrapatelo dam (2nd upriver from Porto) the deepest in Europe and "Mr Bean" at the dinner at the Enoteca da Avessada. The most memorable was an accident. The ship was docked at Cais Gai the evening of June 23 before Sai Joao day. Great fire work display at midnight right in front of us from boats in midriver and the bridge. Unlike others I really like the diff Portuguese food. And one could always ask for e.g. the striploin steak and fries etc from the alt menu. Read Less

I traveled on SS Catherina last year and the Standard of the Isabella is not of a similar quality However the boat was comfortable the food was good with a couple of outstanding dishes The staff were marvellous and the drinks well chosen and plentiful I like having a a served evening meal The food was fresh and we had some lovely Portuguese dishes The small venues we visited were well chosen but beware of a two hour drive to Salamanca The General organation ( Lisbon hotel Corinthia and coach comforts )was excellent BUT The organisation of trips out left much to be desired A full coach of 45 persons all with one guide. Each venue felt impersonal and crowded The voice boxes are great but must not be used to add more people to a group A port talk each night is no substitute for a thymed lecture by an expert. I would certainly choose Undeworld again but not on the Douro RiverI Thank you Uniworld Read Less

Having heard Uniworld was supposed to be a large cut ahead of the rest, I decided to explore Spain and Portugal on a cruise tour from Madrid to Lisbon. The tour director and organization of the sightseeing were outstanding. The Duoro River is definitely not a tourism area, so there was no local entertainers; in fact, there was nothing to do after dinner. Women would dance together in the lounge. That is the one negative. Food and sevice were excellent for the size of the crew. Dinner could be very slow. Travel companions were fun and interesting, about a third American and Canadian, one third British and the other third Australian and New Zealanders. The sites were beautiful. The wineries looked beautiful but the product was only fair. Tours in metropolitan areas were very interesting and enjoyable. We saw a variety of towns from medieval times and contemporary. We saw two impressive universities. We saw where and got an idea of how Jews were excluded during the Inquisition. I enjoyed the cruise but would appreciated a larger room with better storage. First the good news. The chefs did a great job with the three meals each day. I avoid fish on cruises as I have yet to find any that is and this cruise was no different. Desserts were always superb. The cabin was crowded but tolerable. The bad news. The oldest waiter in the dining room and lounge refused to serve me a beverage by ignoring me on two accessions. When I complained I got a gruff response from the manager and bar tender. I had good and friendly service from all of the staff otherwise. This kind of attitude should never happen on a luxury cruise and should be corrected immediately. On disembarkation day we left our four pieces of luggage in the hall as instructed. An hour later our luggage was still in the hall even though all other luggage was taken away from our fellow passengers. My travel companion got concerned and carried our luggage to the lobby. We found it strange and suspicious that our luggage was taken. Read Less

This was a cruise of the Douro River and since we had gotten a super good price, decided to take this cruise . The ship is actually ran by a Douro Azul which owns several other ships that cruise from a Porto . The good: The staff were amazing, so personable and always smiling The food was excellent as well as the wines served with dinner The excursions were hit and miss with a couple that could be rated as Fantastic and others just do-so The bad: The temp in room could not seem to get regulated from being HOT to warm to ok, not consistent . Not getting to go to Salamanca because were told two licks were closed due to rain BUT they did do a 3 1/2 hour bus ride into Spain at Santiago . Some felt cheated since it would have only been another 30 min. to have gone on to Salamanca. We would try Uniworld again but not this cruise.   Read Less

We just returned from our Douro River cruise on the Quenn Isabel. This was the first river cruise we've taken and it definitely won't be the last. We arrived in Lisbon a day before the package tour started. Since this was sold as all inclusive, I think our meals in Lisbon should have been included for the three nights included in the package. Only breakfast came with the package and was wonderful. We paid extra for the tour to Sintra but would not do that again. Had we known that we would just tour a palace, we would have taken a train on our own and toured the monestary and castle instead.I had some misgivings from reviews of th Queen Isabel and some of them were valid. The service in the dining room on the ship and the food definitely did not live up to a 5-star rating. However, the tours, our room, the room service, the bar, etc. were definitely 5-star. This was a very expensive cruise but overall, I felt the money was well spent. There were less than 100 people on our ship and at times, we felt as if we were on a private yacth. This ship is not owned by Uniworld and the staff, all but the one cruise director, were not employed by Uniworld. I think if Uniworld had control over training the staff, the experience would definitely be 5-star. Our cabin, though small, had lots of room for storage. The bathroom was nice and the french balcony helped with my claustropobia. Claudia cleaned our room to perfection each day. We never left the room without everything being spotless when we returned. The location of our room was perfect - very quiet. We found lunch in the lounge suited us better than the dining room. The piano music along with the view made it nicer and less noisy than the dining room. Only about 8 of us ate there each day so it felt very private with the lovely view out the front of the ship. Tours were well organized and interesting. Dinner at a private winery was the highlight, so lovely and fun. All in all, a wonderful cruise with wonderful people. Read Less
