EMBARKATION: We embarked in Dubai. We arrived at the cruise terminal ~1200. We were allowed to enter the ship ~1500. The terminal is large with numerous shopping options, so we began souvenir shopping early! We were on the ship very quickly, and luggage arrived quickly. Overall, very nice and efficient embarkation process. CABIN: We chose an inside cabin as we had a port-intensive itinerary. There was enough space for 2 people, with lots of closet space and drawers. Our cabin steward, Elder, was wonderful - very friendly and accommodating! The bed was very hard, but the cabin steward brought an extra douvet to lay on top of, to act as a mattress pad. Overall, nice cabin with excellent steward. BUFFET: This is where the nightmare started. The Pros: Decent selection. The stations repeat themselves on each side, so you can move to a less crowded section. Absolutely DELICIOUS donuts served several of the mornings! The Cons: The hours - it is only open for ~2 hours at each meal time. So if you sleep in, no breakfast! Come back late from shore excursion, no dinner! The crowd - HUNDREDS, literally hundreds, of rowdy Europeans with absolutely no concept of how a LINE works. Endless cutting. Repeated pushing. Sneezing in their hands and then immediately grabbing the serving spoon?! Or worse, sneezing and coughing without even covering their mouths at all?! Unsupervised children running around, spilling plates of food everywhere. No employees encouraging guests to wash their hands before entering the buffet area. The silverware is hanging, uncovered, on racks on each individual table, so they are probably all covered in sneeze and cough germs too... Overall, decent food with BAD guest interactions. MAIN DINING ROOM: We were assigned the Fiorentino Dining Room, early seating. The Pros: The decor inside the restaurant is absolutely beautiful. It is spacious enough that you do not feel crowded with the other diners. We were seated at a table with fellow English speakers at dinner. At lunch we were seated with whomever they wanted - once a French-speaking woman, and once a Russian couple. There are two or more options for each course. The Cons: The service was extremely slow! Example: we waited one hour and ten minutes and had only eaten ONE course! They then brought out three courses simultaneously and hurried us out of the restaurant?! Often the food was bland, sometimes is tasted downright bad, and one time our dessert was literally still frozen. Overall, the food in the buffet was much better, but you have to encounter hundreds of people lacking common decency. So you need to decide which is more important to you to determine where to eat. ONBOARD EXPERIENCE: The Pros: Piu Gusto drinks package was wonderful! The staff at the bars were friendly. The decor is beautiful!!! Lots of room in hallways, so you don't feel crowded. There is an abundance of live music being played in the bars, for a great atmosphere. Adult only pool available in Samsara Spa. Main pool has retractable roof. The Cons: Hours of Hospitality Desk and Shore Excursion desk were ridiculous, only a few hours per day. The shows are geared towards Italian-speakers mainly. Occasionally they would translate a line or two into English, but the accent was too strong to understand? There are only 10 English-language television channels - 6 are news, 2 are televangelists, (?!), 1 is NASA channel (?!), and 1 is Paramount Network for cheesy movies. So don't plan on watching tv before bed!!! Hours of buffet are minimal, often there are hours at a time where no food is available without paying extra. They put away all the pool loungers (sunbeds) by 2000 each night?! We literally went out to the deck at 2015 (8:15pm) to try to lay on loungers and star gaze. There wasn't a SINGLE lounger that hadn't already been stacked and locked?! Bare minimum of available activities on ship. SAMSARA SPA: Separate, for pay area if the ship. We bought a day pass (35 Euro) to use during our one sea day. We also bought the reserved lounger pass for the duration of the cruise. The Pros: Incredibly inexpensive fee for such an amazing place! Day passes are available too! Adult only Separate jacuzzi Separate warm, indoor pool Two types of saunas/steam rooms Heated stone loungers in two separate rooms, overlooking the ocean, for amazing relaxation. Separate lounger (sunbed) section from the rest of the ship, so you dont need to fight over a lounger on a sea day!!! Private bar tender available by the loungers. The Cons: The hours - they close at 2200 (10pm) SHORE EXCURSIONS: The Pros: PASSEPARTOUR option available (a selection of excursions to choose - one in each port for 199Euro total). Inexpensive compared to other cruise lines. Ship waits for you when your excursion is late (and they almost always were). The Cons: Tours consistently started and ended late. Tours consistently ran HOURS longer than scheduled. Which is fine if you didn't make plans for after the tour and didn't care about missing dinner. But most people do care... Tour operators don't seem to know what they are doing?! Example: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi offers (for FREE!) abayas with hoods so that women are appropriately covered to enter the Mosque. Our tour operator did not know that and several women were not allowed to enter the Mosque because their pants showed ankle, head scarf was see-through, etc. Shouldn't a tour operator know that?! They do it every day! The Mosque was beautiful and a highlight of the trip - people shouldn't miss that due to tour operator not know basic details! Tours are cancelled last minute for "lack of participation", meaning there aren't enough people who speak your language interested in that tour to warrant a bus. Once they inform you that your tour is cancelled you have to wait for the afternoon, when the tour desk opens, to go stand in line with hundreds of other passengers, to reschedule a different excursion. By the time it's your turn, there are only one or two options to choose from. Why not just have everyone on the bus wear headsets that provide translation?!?! DISEMBARKATION: Fast and efficient. We were off the ship in a few minutes and had our luggage picked out within 5 minutes. OVERALL: This cruise was significantly less expensive than any other cruise I've taken (previously taken: 3 Princess, 1 Royal Caribbean, 2 Carnival, 2 Norwegian). The onboard charges are also significantly less than any other cruise I've taken - drink package was ~$240 for a week, including gratuity?! But the interactions with other guests who do not have any concern for personal space or manners was more than I could take. It ruined the cruise for me. The ONLY way I would ever sail Costa again is in a Samsara Suite, so that I could eat in the private restaurant, with separate lounger section. Read Less

Booked this western Mediterranean cruise to visit most ports that I had not been to. I also had never been on Costa or any other Italian flag ship. I had cruised Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Princess on a total of 8 cruises. The advertised cost seemed reasonable, but then came added things, like water package, drink package, and specialty restaurants like the ice cream bar and the Pizza restaurant. Other high end restaurants are also available. The pizza at the pizza restaurant was the best food that I had on the ship. The Pia Gusto drink package was a reasonable buy which covers most drinks and coffees. The Illy coffee is probably the only thing that would get me on Costa again. Dining room food was the poorest I have ever had on a cruise line. Our waiter seemed burned out, but maybe he was near the end of his contract time. The fact that they board and disembark passengers at each port means less waiting at disembarkation, but annoying safety drill announcements in six languages at every port. The pay for pizza was nice because the pizza was excellent, reasonably priced and because it cost a little extra there was no waiting, which I’ve seen on other ships with passengers that can eat them as fast as they are produced. A small cost for exceptional coffee is much better than other cruise lines “swill coffee”. The passengers are probably 80% European, which means limited chatting with your fellow cruisers which to me is a disadvantage, interacting with fellow cruisers is usually part of the fun of cruising. Would I do Costa again? Probably not. Read Less

We were offered a package with airfare and cruise. Seemed like a good deal. We had previously discussed visiting some of the cities on the itinerary, First glimpse of Costa infrastructure technology was when we tried to log in to the MyCosta website It asks for your first name, surname and your "BOOKING REFERENCE" Login always fails unless you omit the first name.. We asked for where it boards. "Barcelona" Which dock ( there are 3 or 4) crickets.. Got on board, and went to check on our pre-reserved packages for beverages, excursions, etc. Most could not be found by the staff. I went outside, where I could get internet on my phone. Logged in to the MyCosta website, and saw that all my bookings were still there. Never did completely sort this out, so every time we ordered a drink the staff would have to double check for our drinks packages as they did not show in our ship cards. First night we went to dinner. We had booked for the "Main dinner from 21 O'Clock" They had us down at "Early Dinner form 17 O'Clock We had booked the Fiorentino restaurant on Deck 3 They had us in the Adularia restaurant We did not care much which restaurant, but did not want to eat at 7. They changed this for us. Second day was to be at sea, and I had booked for my wife to have a Swedish massage - 50 minutes, in the spa. Cost of 99 Euros Of course they "lost" the booking. I checked on My Costa the next day in port, and it was still there. This did not help me that day, so I had the spa rebook it. My wife was booked at 4 p.m., so she went and had the massage. They gave her the "Elemis Asian hot stone massage - 50 minutes" and charged us 154 Euros. They told my wife at the end of the massage that her skin looked quite dry, and sold her a package of 3 different skin lotions to help that. She signed the slip, and did not look closely. When she got back to our cabin she mentioned, so I asked for the slip. They had charged us 595 Euros for the lotions! We went back to the spa and wanted to return these ( unused and unopened, same day, within an hour) They tried to refused. I asked for a manager, and was told that she was not available. I complained to the cruise service desk and asked to speak with a manager. They spoke with me and an appointment with the spa manager was booked for 7 p.m. the next day. We met, she acted all surprised, and accepted our request for a refund. She accepted that, but that the refund had to be done in 2 days later, at Savona, at 10 am. The next day ( and a day before the credit was supposed to happen) they processed the charges against my card for $1,015 CAD The next day ( as arranged) and time I went back to the spa, and ( of course) the manager was not available, and the staff could not do anything. Went back to the cruise ship service, asked for a manager again, and was asked to wait for 20 minutes. Apparently some decision was made in the background, as, when I returned 20 minutes later they offered us the credit, which we accepted, and was processed on the last day of our cruise.. On that day I told them that unless I could log in to my card website and see the credit there I was not going to leave the ship. Drink packages: We booked 2 drink packages: "WATER, COFFEE & BEER PACKAGE" for 69 Euros, to include: " package of 7 water bottles (1lt), 7 draft beers (40cl) and 14 coffees (normal or decaf)." This actually meant: 7 water bottles, 7 Heinecken drafts, and 14 espressos. If one ordered a coffee with milk, they made us cafe latte, and charged our card for 3 Euros. We finally learned that if we ordered an "Americano with milk" we could get this, actually made identical to a cafe latte, and put it against our prepaid coffees. They would not credit us for the 5 previous coffees we had, at a cost of 15 Euros. Cabins: We selected an inside cabin, midships. It was clean, comfortable, and very quiet. Only complaints: TV remote did not work ( they replaced) Only 1 AC power outlet in the whole suite. Bar fridge did not refrigerate. In general, the staff service was quite good. The sit down meals were Italian food and very good with excellent service The buffet meals were chaotic. Running out of many items very fast. They acted like they were preparing to feed 500 people and 1500 had shown up. They charge an automatic 15% gratuity on all purchases, food and beverages. This is not included with the prepaid drink packages, and is charged extra. They charge an extra 10 Euros per day, per person, service charge. Basically the practice is to "nickle and dime" one to death on everything. Most of the ports were as expected. One, Savona, in northern italy is a former industrial town with a population of 61,000. As Wikipaedia describes it: "Savona used to be one of the chief seats of the Italian iron industry, having iron-works and foundries, shipbuilding, railway workshops, engineering shops, and a brass foundry." There is little to see or do there, and apparently it is chosen as it is fairly close to both Genoa ( 56km) away and Monaco ( 132 km away. Pardon my saying and apologies to the citizens of Savona, but it is a bit of a :"shithole" In either case an excursion is a trip by bus for about half the days travelling by roads. I think that Genoa would have been a much better destination, See: https://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/newport.cfm?ID=181 I just looked on Google Maps and saw 2 Costa ships tied there as of the day they took the satellite pictures. In summary: Nice ship, good food, cheap and disorganized cruise company. Will not be back on their ships. Read Less

Briefly; SAMSARA SUITE #11005 - the second largest cabin size on the ship (I believe) - ONE plug socket for guest use (oh and one behind the wall mounted TV) - Massive balcony with tub but horrible blue fluorescent lighting (stops junkies I guess) - Poorly designed bath screen needed a dressing robe cord to stop it banging all night - WiFi signal practically non-existent - Very noisy cabin stewards outside door from 7am - Very noisy "vacuum flushing" system every 10-15 mins from 7am (not toilet) INTENDITORE Drinks Package - massive choice of two wines available at bars (majority of which are closed until 7pm/8pm) - Heineken the only draft beer available (or their own draft from one bar open from 7pm) - No cordials such as lime, blackcurrant etc (maybe too expensive at 30p a litre wholesale) SERVICE LEVELS - bar/lounge service ranged from OK to extremely slow - I go out of my way to be polite to staff but it made little difference on this cruise BUFFET RESTAURANT - went once - not to be repeated - cold food, limited choice and no method in its layout (treasure hunt to make a meal) THE CLUB RESTAURANT - staff training = zero - maitre'd was their for his benefit not to ensure the guests had a great experience - rushed courses despite asking several times for it to be slowed down - plates removed while my wife was still eating - new cutlery put in place even while my wife was still eating - extremely (EXTREMELY) limited choice but what we did have was nice - please, no more mozzarella or pasta dishes (Italians cannot eat only this surely) - vegetables twice in 7 days (5 runner beans one day and a carrot on another) - screaming children running around restaurant (its supposed to be a dining experience) SHOWS / Venues - Italian and in Italian (90% of the time) - but I expected it so was ready I guess - very little variety of music around the bars and minimal seating in most - theatre layout really poor - estimate 20% of audience could actually see the whole stage ENTERTAINMENT (quizzes etc) - italian and in italian BILLING - overcharged 114E so queried at reception only to be told I had to go to the Spa to get it corrected. I had never set foot in there so why do they expect their guest to do all the chasing - overcharged again by the Spa - this time for 210E. I went there this time as I was closer to them than reception. The Manager simply told me "you really shouldn't worry about these things, they will get sorted" - perhaps if they didnt happen TWICE for somewhere I had never set foot in, I would have been a little more understanding. DEPARTURE - carry your own luggage as this helps you to get off the ship faster (you will thank me) SUMMARY We have now taken 41 cruises, 6 of which were on another Italian line MSC. Costa is by far the WORST cruising experience we have EVER had. The noisy, rude groups of Italians weren't the issue as they're on MSC too. Just about everything about Costa was the problem - poorly designed ship - minimal staff training and therefore mostly poor service - limited bar times and extremely bad choice of drinks in each - poor but expensive wifi - limited food choices in The Club Restaurant - billing issues TWICE Yes, Costa are a cheaper alternative - but they don't even seem to want their guests there. This was our 3rd with Costa (and 26th overall) and we had always had great experiences previously with Costa so did not expect anything different on this cruise. We were very disappointed overall. The ship overall was very nice. It was well maintained and decorated nicely for Christmas. Whilst the layout of the ship is not the greatest (you have to go up or down to get where you want to go sometimes) and the public toilets are not well signed, it is functional. Getting on/off the ship in ports was possibly the easiest ever. Debark we were off the ship collected our luggage and on the bus within 5 min of our appointed time. Now for a quick review on each area - Cabin - Despite many complaints it never got below ~22/23c - the only person who cared was our cabin steward. Food - MDR - Very inconsistent in quality/taste/variety/service. The first night dinner took just under 3 hours and on average we were 2+ hours with the first dish coming to the table approx 1hr after sitting down. One night I ordered from the kids menu to find something I would be happy with (I am a picky eater, but can normally find something I can eat). Also Breakfast was always a Scrum, even though I thought they did a great Ham and Cheese Omelette, I could not handle the craziness. Buffet - Very inconsistent in quality/taste/variety/opening. It was a treasure hunt to put an actual meal together. Teppanyaki - By far the worst we have ever been to. It was tasteless with some poor quality meats and the show was not good either. Burger Place - Decent but nothing to write home about. PIzza Place - Yes you have to pay for the Pizza - This was by far our best meal on board. Staff - Except for 3/4 people I found most staff to be rude/unfriendly. Now I don't expect a lot but common courtesy goes a long way. Bars - Overall quite limited. We ended up in the Beer bar on deck 5. Even at €2.50 a beer with our package was worth it. Also the service was top notch! We did speak to the Hospitality Desk about some of our concerns and the International host called me back 2 days later to discuss them. Offered Pizza or Crepes as an apology, I suggested an OBC to cover part of the teppanyaki and she said she would see what they could do. Here I am at home and I am still waiting to hear. I want to be very clear, I was not expecting any credit when I complained, I really just wanted a colder room. I did however think the Panettone left in the cabin on Christmas Eve was a nice touch. I could continue, but overall we are just disappointed after great experiences previously. Read Less

The good points are cabin excellent and kept clean. Boarding was efficient and the terminal very clean. Most staff were hard working although if you're English speaking some didn't seem to understand unless basic requests at the table. Entertainment was good, especially the Tenor singer. Wasn't keen on the night the staff provided the entertainment, some were good others pretty mediocre, bit like BGT. The on board dance team were great, providing lessons as well. That we did enjoy. The bad points are: tips being compulsory and not being told upfront, probably in the small print which no-one reads, and not told on booking. Bottled water not included in the drink package, but tap water is ok. The food in the restaurant was poor. Some meals were just ok but mostly it was cold or tepid at best and I even suspect some was leftovers from the buffet, re invented. One particularly unappetising dish was the meat skewers. One piece of lamb or beef (couldn't tell), piece of a sausage and a piece of chicken, in bread crumbs and fried, served with a scoop of mash potato that was grey and lumpy. There was no sauce, so was very dry. We waited nearly half an hour for our starter one night also. Uninspiring desserts also, often something frozen. Better deserts in the buffet area. No gelato ice cream or pizza available unless you pay for it. I expected this at least on the menu as it's an Italian ship. They pick up and drop off at every port, meaning the muster drill is carried out every time and takes place in places where passengers are trying to enjoy themselves, like the Orlav Bar. We had to sit through it or move on. Lots of tannoy speeches in lots of languages, which one time interrupted the dancers who had to jog on the spot until it finished and then try to carry on. The quizzes were Italian based, e.g Italian cities and types of pasta, so unless you were Italian not much chance of winning. I know it's only fun but you like a chance at least. I used the spa and was given a dressing gown which I had to carry from there to my cabin each time, and if I didn't hand it in at the end of the cruise there would be a charge of 79 euros. Also for the pool towels left in our cabin. My husband used the gym, but one day loads of unsupervised children entered and just basically ran about and played on the gym equipment even though a sign said no-one under 16 allowed in there. There was potential for injury. The poor staff were continually pushing a lobster dish for a price, which became a bit tedious. We didn't do any of the shore excursions. So overall I would not choose Costa again. I have cruised with other lines so I do have something to compare it with. This was my 2nd Mediterranean cruise, the previous being with NCL which was a far superior experience. I could go on with more disappointment but I think enough said, I don't want it to become a novel. Read Less

This was our third cruise but first (and last) time with Costa. They first stuck us in a cabin over the propellers and docking machinery. We did get our room changed. All the food tasted ike it was fast food micowaved for the masses. This was probably to motivate you to try the higher end paying restaurants. Crew looked tired due to working 9 months straight without breaks. Cancelled 3 of our tours and dont even think of taking this ship if you are american or english speaking. Very Italian which implies Patience is not in their DNA nor being soft spoken. Get a good set of earplugs if you take thus cruise. Between the screaming children, rude gestures and poor entertainment we were anxious to leave the ship. Highlights were the wonderful tenor they had only perform one night and after the 50th rendition of 'Volare' heard throughout the ship it finally grew on me :) Read Less

We wanted to enjoy some of the sites along the mediterranean. Very disappointed with customer service. They were non attentive and did not respond to our concerns. Wait staff were indifferent and sometimes hostile and arrogant. Disembarkment and dispensal of passports at the end of the cruise was at best chaotic and disorganized. Recommendation save your money and go on an American cruise line. There you are treated like a king. There were no smoking signs everywhere, all of them were ignored and smoking was everywhere. Cabins were OK. Clean and modern. Entertainment was a joke. All shows were in Italian. No attempt was made to have english speaking shows. Over all the cruise was adequate, if you dont mind putting up with shoddy service, arrogant and inattentive food service people and waiters. The gym had 10 treadmills for 4000 travellers. This was our 35 th cruise, and our first one in Europe. The ship was beautiful and very clean. However, they served a repetitive, cheap, and limited menu. There were only a few desserts to choose from during dinner, and no coffee served which surprised me even though we bought the beverage package. We had to get coffee at the bar area after dinner. The buffet areas were extremely crowded and a cheap repetitive selection of food. Sit down breakfast was limited and confined to one dining room. In order to eat a nice sit down lunch with a menu you had to pay. When I go on a cruise, I like to sit down elegantly for a breakfast or lunch and be served. My husband and I felt like there was a lack of communication from the captain. On every on of our previous cruises the captain usually gives a daily report from the bridge on weather etc. The entertainment left a lot to be desired. We didn't stay for many of them. After dinner, my husband and I would try to walk on the Promenade deck but couldn't because it was wet due to their early cleaning. Also, there were too many smoking areas on the Promenade Deck so as you walked for exercise you had to breathe in all of that smoke. Finally, we had a room on Deck 9 which was a mistake because the buffet area was above us and we could hear noise all night. After a few nights they finally moved our room to deck 8 which was much better. We will never go on a Costa Cruise again especially in Europe! Read Less

This is our worst cruise experience. The ship circulates in the west Medit. Sea and stops at several ports. At every port there are people getting on or off the ship. The newly boarded people are, as usual, very excited, which makes this ship extremely noisy. There are people running and shouting at small hours in the hallway every evening. The cleaning and preparation crew move the chairs, drop heavy boxes, mop the floor using heavy machines from mid night to early morning with no consideration that there are people sleeping under the dining area. We had 7 sleepless nights on the ship. In addition, the dinner on this ship has also a lot to be desired. All members of our family (3 people) had severe diarrhea on board. The dinner has very few choices of cheap dishes. We went to the formal dinner once and never did again. The buffet was so-so and was very crowded. There was only one counter that offers fried eggs in the morning and the line was half mile long every morning. Read Less

My first cruise and it did not scare me off from going on others. It did however cement our resolve never to cruise with Costa again. A bedlam of constant noise, either from the clientele (if you do not enjoy Italian style of communications... don't go! Just sayin!) or from the very frequent announcements. If if wasn't the daily safety drill (yes, this cruise is a rolling cruise... peep embark and disembark on every port, you can imagine the impact on atmosphere on board, very unsettled, felt like a ferry most days) it was crew only announcements (what an actual?) or super super bingo bingo et al entertainment war cries. There is no area for quiet chilling and since no blankets were provided relaxing on the deck with a book was not possible. Only place to get some peace would have been our cabin.... nearly lost my mind on the at sea day of the cruise! Food was a mixed bag. I'm not going to dwell on the buffet horrors, the food was mediocre (and mostly cold) at best, the brutish feeding frenzy of the clientele was too much for me to deal with but luckily there was the sit down option. Dinners in Fiorentina were the highlights of our cruise. The early seating was the most peace we found on our cruise and the food was pretty good too! Unbelievably coffee and tea were not available freely outside breakfast and the 4-5pm afternoon snack time. Entertainment in the main theater was on amateurish side (apart from last night, the Russian acrobat duo was proper good!) and being amused by enthusiastic ball room dancing civilians can only keep me amused me so long. Staff were OK, we didn't really get involved with demanding anything from them... kind of gave up on expecting anything special upon realization at what kind of cruise this was. Gym was full of loud teens despite no under 16 should have been allowed. I saw one bambino stood on a table by the water machines, no one, not parents nor the staff batted an eyelid. A lot of people were making piles of sandwiches from breakfast tables to have later, that kind of crowd...! The one Costa 'excursion' we took was the coach only to Rome from Civitavecchia: Departure from port was delayed by 45 mins due to broken down coach, 15 mins were added in Rome..... no apologies, no gestures of anything (customer service does not come naturally from this lot!). Both ways our driver (different) was busy one-hand driving down motorway whilst happily (and, typically for region, loudly chatting on his mobile phone). On our way back our guide (a German) lady joined in on the act. I'm certain I'm not alone in NOT enjoying listening to unnecessary mobile conversations of others... not to mention the safety aspect! To recap: Future cruises will not be on Costa. I do not get my kicks from being sleep deprived and successful holidays are not made of feelings of claustrophobia, not to me anyway. If you enjoy your cruise as an opportunity to travel between cities in style and comfort, whilst being entertained, Costa is not for you. In fact, I'm a rather unclear as to whom the Costa experience is aimed at! Read Less

So to tell the story, my father and I hired a travel agent last minute to make a trip to Spain for New Years. We decided to go for a cruise that goes to some of the Italian coastal cities, so based on our budget, we went with Coastal Diadema. Checking in and getting into our cabin was fairly easy and the New Years celebration was a lot of fun since you could go to different areas in the cruise with different music genres. I very much enjoyed that. Once the cruise departed from the coast, that's when trouble started coming. We had booked a tour in Rome for the Sistine Chapel in Spanish two weeks prior to the trip. They notified us to go to the tour offices and we assumed it was to confirm the tour. It was to tell us that they cancelled it. First of all, the language barrier was an issue with the staff because most of them were Italian and their understanding of other languages was a huge stress for us; they could not understand us and it was the same vice versa. They were not helpful when it came to trying to book us another tour. We had to constantly be going to their offices to see if we could fix the situation but we kept getting responded with "I don't know"s; as in "I dont know what we have" and "I dont know what to do". We had to schedule with their manager in order to have anything done who thankfully fixed the situation. This was in a span of three days. Oh! They also cancelled our tour in Savona, Italy as well. Apparently they have a lot of problems reaching the minimum amount of people for the tours. So my advice, book outside the ship. This agency is too unreliable. Speaking of bad service, most of the staff were cold and robotic when it came to customer service. Just overall rude. We honestly thought it was a culture thing because even a lot of the tourists were rude as well. The cruise. was. dirty. As in there was an issue with the ventilation and cleanliness of the cabins, to the point that HALF OF THE CRUISE GOT SICK. Including me and my father. We both had fever and horrible coughs for days. Could barely sleep. We both had to go to the emergency clinic where we found out how many people were actually sick. It was only after we keep leaving the cruise when we began feeling better. Entertainment was pretty enjoyable. I liked the fact that you had bands and singers in different parts of the cruise singing various languages and genres, so you had a lot of variety. There were activities that I did not find family friendly, specially for a "family" cruise, but still enjoyable. The breakfast food was horrible. Anything bread was harder than a rock and they only serve you fruits. If you had eggs they were always underdone and tasteless. The buffet for lunch and dinner were pretty good tho. Including the food from the restaurants. Pizza is delicious, Samsara restaurant was good, hamburgers are great. Honestly, AVOID the dining at all cost. If you have a scheduled time to go to a restaurant for dining, just dont go. The food has literally no flavor. The buffet is soooo much better. Honestly, no. I would not go again. Not at all. I called Costa Cruise in Miami to find out information before getting on the ship regarding payments onboard and other pre boarding questions. Each question was answered incorrectly and when we boarded we were in for many surprises. On the first night of the cruise, were were FORCED to purchase a drink package for each of our three children on the ship who were staying in their own cabin. Two were full alcohol and the third was the soda/water package. On the second morning of the cruise one of our kids had a few bites on his neck. The next day another child had several bites on his stomach. That child had seen and killed a bug on his brother's bed. We immediately reported the incident to the Hospitality desk. They took all the kids clothes and luggage and washed them and sent the kids to the ships hospital where they proceeded to give a cream treatment to the child that had more bites. Turned out that child was allergic to the detergent used on the ship and had to return a second time to the hospital where he received a shot of steroids and more medication. From there the trip went downhill and as much as the staff thought they were doing for us to make this right, anything that was done was more to benefit Costa Cruise Lines. Since child number 2 was not able to use his drink package while on the medication the other one that is old enough did not drink either(its not fun to drink alone). The ship would not refund all the drink packages they forced us to purchase, only the one for the child on the medication. The first dining room could not accommodate the five of us at the same table so we had to find the maitre d' for the second night to change our dining option since its the one week per year we get to spend together. They gave us the second seating in the dining room which was 9:00pm. The service was so slow we did not finish dinner until almost midnight. We then decided to try the anytime dining. Because we changed our dining option after the first night, we were charged per person for the change. The restaurant manager couldn't have been nicer though and the rest of the cruise did not charge for the change. The food on the ship was very mediocre and to eat gluten free anything as my diet requires, the only option I was given was to eat in the dining room. None of the buffets during the day or even room service has gluten free from what I was told. Basically I had one meal per day! Having adult children, they were looking for nighttime entertainment in the disco or other areas of the ship. The disco had 13-17 year olds enjoying their time leaving our children feeling uncomfortable to be in the same disco. They were very underwhelmed having very little 21-25 adult activity. The communication was poor across the board. We had to search for ourselves to get any information about the ships activities or entertainment. We felt as though we were a very unwelcomed group of travelers as well as other travelers that fit our profile, we all felt the same way. The overall attitude of the staff was disinterested in doing anything to work when all we were looking for was help. The rolling of their eyes when we approached them and poor bodily language was a reinforcement of their behaviors. This is not a ship we would recommend to any of our peers! Read Less

Wanted to try a different cruise line so chose Costa, the ship was lovely and I can't fault the cabin or the public areas very regal and good quality finishes however our experience was somewhat coloured by the type of clientele the ship attracts, I can only compare to one of the hop on hop off buses which are plentiful in the ports we visited as the ship takes on and disembarks passengers at every port we called at so it seems there was always a complement of people walking around the ship with some form of luggage. The lido deck which offers a buffet for all mealtimes is fine if you can get close enough to get something and be warned if they are serving seafood be prepared for the frenzy that takes place by the Italian passengers who seem to want to feed the world with the amount they pile up on numerous plates. We resorted to the restaurant for our meals but apart from the evening meal when we had a reserved table the rest was hit and miss with over worked waiting staff trying their best to take and deliver orders for food and drink extending your time at table to sometimes a couple of hours. The cruise line offers most things at a price, we bought a drinks package that covered alcohol and coffees however did not include ice cream which my husband loves usually finishing his evening meal with some but this was not possible unless we paid extra. Pizza parlour was also an extra charge and not included on the menu. Excursions not cheap and it seemed a lot to pay for places like ancient monuments and churches so we opted for town visits, once again we had to pay for shuttle buses into town which were expensive in comparison to other cruise lines which normally offer these as standard and only in some cases charge a minimum fee. The only free shuttle buses was at Civitteccia put on by the port authority. The shows were mostly in Italian and geared toward the Italians even the compere introduced the acts in various languages before getting to an English version which seemed short in comparison to the others making us feel as though we were missing out. The ship attracted lots of families with young children who could often be found playing in the lifts unsupervised and causing havoc, we also noticed mid cruise we had what seemed like school parties with hoards of teenagers who were loud and boisterous and possibly just old enough to drink and smoke. On the plus side we had a great room steward Melvin who looked after the cabin and our waiter in the restaurant of an evening Ramesh who couldn't do enough for us and really made some of the cruise bearable, along with some lovely people sat at our table who we will stay in touch with. Our arrival at the port of Barcelona was much too early for the ship and although our luggage was checked in at 11am we had a 3 hour wait before being allowed to board and had to spend this in a large arrivals hall which fortunately had a café, coming home we disembarked at 9.30 and had to wait for our pick up for just over an hour with no seating and being moved to the outside of the building to wait in the cold. This of course was not down to Costa but the tour Company we had booked with which I shall not use again. Overall I would not recommend this cruise line to English paying passengers it seems a waste of good money especially when other cruise lines offer more competitive prices Read Less

the ship has 14 floors. floors 3-5 are the main floors for dinner and entertainment. prime rooms start on floor 6. you are assigned to a restaurant (two seated, one buffet) and a time 1830 or 2130. if you come after 1900 they wont let you in, and in fact, you wont have enough time to ear through all the courses until they evacuate you at 2045. drinks cost money during dinner, even water. prices are reasonable to a middle priced restaurant. drinking deals are good only to heavy drinkers, and all your table need to join. The service was bad and at time insulting. The staff looks mostly very sad and it looks like they are treated badly and have no joy in providing service. the worst were the breakfast crew and the front desk. Food was ok. not too good and not too bad. shows were nice Cabin was good the behavior of the ship was strange - I dont know why they confiscated our passports during our boarding. on the other hand they didnt take our credit card, but we were forced to give it later. there is a 20 Euro per day service charge you cant avoid, for the bad service you get, but still you should give tips if you want to get a smile from a service provider. staff were occasionally very rude to us with no reason, like in the first drill where we were told to stand in the middle of the room for no reason - we were shocked... during breakfast you can have a buffet on the 10th floor or a la carat on the 5th floor but the staff dont want you to order. its work for them so you need to know in advance 'your rights' to order otherwise they send you to the limited buffet in the center of the hall. there are two very very small swimming pools. one indoors and one out. we were surprised how little the pools are for so many people. the balcony family cabin we stayed in was roomy and nice. basic, but new and nice. the shows were really impressive and provide good entertainment The poor service we got did the job..and we will never return to Costa again Read Less

This Mediterranean cruise was great value for money over the web and had great excursions to offer including the reason why we went on this cruise was based on the Ferrari museum. On the day we turned up at Barcelona to board the ship and a comprehensive intro with Ciara, we then were asked to use their Costa card as their main id card and expense card instead of using your cash or credit card there is no other option so we put our credit card into the system and put all cost via the Costa card. We booked all day cruises and only managed to go to 2 as all the other excursions were canceled due to low numbers attending and no other offer was issued and on one excursion we insisted on going to a Spanish speaking excursion because we can speak Spanish, the cruise office was awful and did not are about the problem Costa caused. How can Costa do this to us. The cruise itself was ok apart from all the hidden extras and expensive mark up on everything including water which is free at the breakfast bar and gym but not at restaurants being said that and Costa being a USA based company all USA passport holders do not pay for water, another thing is the cleaning of the room, we were charged 10 euro each so 20 euro each day for something that at a normal hotel comes included and its not optional but we were not told. Cue to the restaurants were unbelievable even though you were assigned to that restaurant. Food was good but mainly Italian based and most of the waiters did not speak English nor understood what you were saying which is fustrating. We ended the last day in Barcelona and nothing else to pay as per our last days meeting with Ciara, so we continued with our vacation until we ended up in Granada at a hotel thinking we had more money left on our credit card on to find out the Costa has taken 800 euros from our credit card and we phone them and got the run around saying that it should be back into our account after one month, now how does it take that long to refund or release this unauthorized use of our credit card after endless calls, emails we had to cut our vacation short and still no refund nor any aftercare. Costa are extremely unprofessional not being open right from the start and taking our vacation money with no authorization, no remorse and no compensation with cutting our vacation short and the endless emails and phone calls. Do not board Costa cruises unless your fully aware of hidden costs and top up your Costa card with cash and not by Credit card. Read Less

We sailed on Costa Diadema for the New Year's cruise on Europe. The boat is beautiful and huge as well as our cabin very good price, quality value. Nevertheless compared with other cruises we have done with Costa which were in our opinion very good and convenient this one on Costa Diadema was really not good! The service ion the restaurants ADULARIA and Corona Blu were extremely long, about 2 hours and 2,30 hours to have dinner)! The quality of the shows and entertainment team were very poor, not enough activities on board, no hot water or coffee available (everything had to be paid), all passengers were really pushed to consume and to spend as much as possible! No glamour, no magic and a very bad attitude from Costa Cruises. We could tell that the most part of the passengers were very disappointed! And of course on the last morning when you are about to leave the boat and you are charged with fees of 10 € for person and for day for a service that you did not appreciate at all you feel that Costa is really putting his hand on your pocket! The problem is not the crew they just follow orders and they must obey. If this line of exploitation continues to be followed by Costa Cruises I am sure they will lose a lot of clients me included and it is really a pity because they can do much better as they already done before and win money anyway! Arrived home last night from our Christmas cruise around the Med. The Costa Diadema is a beautiful ship, a pity it isn't owned and run by Celebrity or Royal Caribbean. Our inside cabin, 2269, was comfortable and spacious. Part of the cruise experience is good food, unfortunately not on this ship. The food was awful, the only thing consistent was it's temperature, cold or tepid. The dining room was practically empty, which says a lot. My Christmas Day lunch was hamburger and chips, the evening Gala Dinner menu was mostly variations of fish. Our waiter forgot one course of my meal and then brought me the wrong main meal, when I pointed out it wasn't what I ordered he argued with me. The 26th December we settled down for our meal in the dining room, read the menu and promptly left. We ended up eating buffet food next to the swimming pool, totally over dressed. The food in the buffet was luke warm with the same choices every day, and the waiters slow to clear tables. The entertainment in the theatre was just the crew or ship's dancers, but we did find the groups around the various bars and lounges good. A huge ship but never felt overcrowded as there was plenty of seating area's to choose. We didn't take any ship's own excursions as English was the fifth language to be translated, which tends to grate on your nerves after a day or two. No, never again with Costa, we shall only book with Celebrity or Royal Caribbean in future. So that's Christmas 2016 finished for us and we was so looking forward to it. Read Less

Very disappointing cruise. After a great 2015 Christmas cruise, our 2016 cruise aboard Diaderma was a huge disappointment. Meal times were nothing short of a cattle market. Christmas Eve being the worst meal I've had in a long time. We ate in the Adularia Restaurant which was clearly unable to cater for the number of guests. Queues of frustrated guests trying to get a table. Once we did finally get a table, the meals came out luke warm, some even cold. The delay in between courses sometime approached 1 hour. On one evening after being left for over an hour waiting for dessert, I tried approaching the restaurant manager who clearly didn't want to know and walked away mid conversation! Very poor customer service. Out of 7 nights on board we had one decent meal - and that was when we paid extra for it at the Samsara restaurant. With the exception of the professional dance troop, the evening dancing entertainment was also poor. Second rate tacky music circa 1970/1980. I'm sure Costa can do better - they just missed the mark on this cruise. Read Less

Beware this is a rip off! We were looking so forward to our cruise. The embarkation went smoothly and the staff were fine. The ship is very Bolliwood and over the top, with glitz and glamour everywhere. Our cabin was adequate and thankfully we could control the air conditioner in it. You cannot drink the water and no water was provided. The ship was over heated, when getting into the lifts you felt like you were going into a furnace. The Italians and Spaniards were in such a rush to crush into the lifts that they didn't even let you get out first. On a number of occasions we were almost pushed over by rude guests, who gave no thought to anyone else. You have to pay for everything... including water, and pay a gratuity on absolutely everything as well. The food was very mediocre and most of it was cold. Very disappointing. It was most unpleasant having to listen to arguments between the staff while trying to enjoy your dinner. The breakfast buffet was like a cattle market free for all, with pushing in and general bad manners, with hard bread and rolls. Far too many people for such a small buffet. The other problem is that at meal times in the served restaurants, the waiters show you to a different table every night and take no regard as to the nationality of those that they seat or are seated, so it is likely that you will not be able to converse with anyone during the meal because of language difficulties, so instead of it being a pleasant experience it can be quite a drag. The entertainment was so over crowded that it was frustrating. The excursions were all very overpriced. Of the five outings that we had booked before leaving home, four of them were cancelled due to changes made by La Costa. The wifi was expensive, there were two English TV channels in the cabin (BBC news & Aljazeera) and very poor selection of movies to rent. When leaving the ship, they add on a hospitality charge of €10 per day per person and it is taken off your credit card without your permission. This mandatory service charge should be included in basic price to reflect the true cost. It is a con.... Read Less

I just came back from Western Mediterranean cruise with Costa Diadema. It includes Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia / Rome (Italy), La Spezia (Italy), Savona (Italy), Marseille (France) and Barcelona (Spain). Overall it was a good value for the money. But it is hardly impressive, if you have taken other cruises. The main weakness is buffet food and the quality of nightly entertainments: low level and cheap. Lousy singers and dancers, short shows (max 40 min) and not much variety (almost every night is dancing and singing, with rare acrobatics). The buffet is very poorly arranged for the number of guests, so it's a constant struggle to get food. The main dining is very slow, min of 1.5 hours to eat, with small portions. Cruise line tries to rip you off in any way they can, including providing expensive buses from port to city, while not providing any information on what else you could do. The strong points are fairly new beautiful ship and great crew (mainly from Philippines and India). With so many options avilable, I will not choose Costa next time. Read Less

Sorry but this is the worst type of cruise, for us anyway. Too many people trying to get food, drink and onto coaches. The restaurant waiters are very good and food great, but at the buffet at lunch times the passengers pushing and filling their plates so high makes you feel ill. Our main problems with costa is not having water available when needed without having to pay for it, and every day ontop of evrthing is the service charge at the moment is 9 euros. Then when you buy anything costa add another service charge. They even charge a fee of nearly 11 euros to get from the ship to the cities you are visiting, unless you have already paid to go on one of their excursions. The only saving grace is the staff not the italian main officers and staff but all the waiters etc who seem to be from the philloppines, they are very helpful. It's a shame because the places we visited where very interesting, and they seem to cater for children under 12 very well and from 16 upwards but our 12 year old was restricted to playing in the arcade to which that was over 3 euros a game. Our holiday is not about how little we spend we just like value for money, and with costa you felt as if you paid for the holiday, and then some more every day. If costa could just include water with their full board option, it would make a difference. We have had better cruises and have done many. Also having to leave your luggage outside your cabin by 01:00 for disembarkation and leaving your cabin by 08:00 is a little bewildering as the luggage is left on the quayside by the ship for you to collect and put on the coach for the airport journey. So will not put costa cruises at the top of our holiday list. Read Less

Costa Diadema 1st February 2016. Our normal Anniversary cruise with Costa round the Western Med & as usual not really interested in P.O.C. as we no longer venture ashore, just in a week of quiet relaxation & good food. Well what a disappointment this proved to be; First the Mini-suite was dangerous for elderly guests, wardrobe door handles so small we both had trouble opening them as well as drawers, doors that opened the wrong way onto the table which had to be moved back & forth when using cupboards or table for breakfast, just one chair & a stool which lived at other side of cabin under desk. The mini-bar stuck out into cabin & walking round it & the bed during a nightly visit to the bathroom was like an assault course. A fruit bowl that to say the least was like discarded food at the Supermarket waste bins, two apples, one plum & a Tangerine all of which looked like they had seen better days. We moved to a Premium balcony cabin that was much as usual, but seemed slightly small than normal, at least the fruit bowl was fresh. Reported my need for assistance for boat drill as soon as we boarded; come the time no help arrived I was left in cabin wearing life vest while wife attended drill, later that night nasty letter from Captain explaining that it was compulsory & I must attend. My written reply stated the obvious & is unprintable here. Outcome nice apology & invite to dine in the Samsara for free, politely refused as we already had booked all three pay Restaurant’s. Next was a visit to the on board cruise Consultant, price for our next cruise was scribbled on a scrap of paper & we were told that loyal club members no longer get any discounts, and then informed that my Club points had been reduced from 23,820 to 14,048 & all cruises taken before 2013 were now not counted towards COSTA CLUB levels taking us back to 2005 level. So much for 17 years of building up to highest level. The Costa club rep was a delightful young lady who even under so much pressure from angry members held her cool and tried to explain what the new rules meant. It means Costa has dis-regarded every cruise prior to 2013 & only cruises taken in the last three years will ever count towards any perks. GREAT MOVE COSTA TRUE TO FORM AGAIN. ON the plus side ship was nice we found plenty of places to relax even on sea days, reception staff were outstanding dealing with our problems, as was all of the crew we had any contact with. The food in all Specialty Restaurant’s was lovely, unlike the Michelin Starred chef offerings in the MDR which was a miss mash of almost blended baby food. The TODAY daily paper the usually is written in understandable English, is now call the Diario di bordo, with more Italian inside than English, so much for the Multi-Culture we loved from the Costa of old, even three shows were almost fully Italian & only partly understood by us, but not many of their English guests. If this is now their Flag Ship then heaven help them, take a look at the Serena/Magicia or even back to the grand days of cruising on the Atlantica & Victoria when Costa was King a far as we were concerned. Princess & P & O we are on our way back to a Company that still cares about loyal clients. Read Less
