The ship is first class, everywhere is spotlessly clean, the cabins are kept clean and tidy, the sheets, pillowslips and towels are pure white and changed frequently, as are the rubbish bins. There are various restaurants around the ship, the food served is A1 first class and really cannot be faulted, do not expect English cuisine it is mainly Italian based. My only real gripe is, that unless you pay for it, water, tea and coffee is only available twice a day, in the morning at breakfast and again in the afternoon at tea time. On board activities are sparse and not very inspiring throughout the day, although the entertainment team are very congenial and at times quite funny and good for a laugh. The things that put me off the ship are, I thought going on a cruise meant everyone boarded at the departure point and all disembarked at the finish, not so, at every port of call people either left or joined the ship, it is in truth really a luxury ferry! The other problem is that at meal times in the served restaurants, the waiters show you to a table and take no regard as to the nationality of those that they seat or are seated, so it is likely that you will not be able to converse with anyone during the meal because of language difficulties, so instead of it being a pleasant experience it can be quite a drag. For my wife and I the Costa format did not work, and many of the (English) passengers told me it is probably the worst cruise line to travel on and that most other cruise lines are better. Read Less

This cruise was a part of our honeymoon, so I spent extensive amounts of time researching and planning. I am writing this review because I found it difficult to find a straight-forward review. We loved it & would have booked sooner with more confidence if it wasn't for the cruise snobs complaining about the smallest trivial things! This is what we wanted in our cruise: 1. Clean and comfortable 2. A way to see a lot of Europe without having to re-pack our bags every day 3. Good food 4. Stopping at good ports 5. Fun activities on the cruise (although we spent most of our time on shore) And we got all of it! Here's what I was confused about even after reading all the reviews: 1. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY WATER. I drink a lot of water, so it sounded like you have to buy every cup. That's only if you're in one of the fancy restaurants that you have to pay extra for. There's Buffets for every meal that is included in the cruise without extra charge and all the free water you want. People seems to complain for the extra cost of water at the fancy restaurants but that's typical if you ask for bottled water at any restaurant. You can also buy bottles of water on the ship, we prepaid for 12 large 2 liter bottles for like $3 a piece. Really reasonable and we were never thirsty. 2. There's open breakfast buffet upstairs, but you can eat a nice sit down breakfast downstairs at no extra charge. You can order eggs, burritos, and any of their pre-set hot meals. I guess europeans are used to eating small breakfast (like cheese and croissants) so it wasn't crowded downstairs. Lunch buffet has pasta, pizza, salads, etc. So no extra charge to eat, only at the fancy restaurants that you need to make reservations for. Also, the ship does have a lot of Europeans, I think we only ran into a few Americans, but there was no problem communicating in English. Read Less

Fantastic first time cruise with Costa! The ship is awesome, very glitzy and modern, clean throughout. Facilities are diverse and finished to a high standard and with the latest technology. A good feature is the costa mobile app which allows you to chat freely amongst passengers using your device. Internet is affordable and they offer several plans to suit your needs Embarkation was a bit chaotic from a customer service point of view, and as a first time, they left us on our own and had a lot of questions. We boarded, was taken picture but still had no card. Then was told cards are in the room. We had questions and intuitively with the info in the cabin and help from guest relations felt more settled within couple of hours, at least before the first show commenced. I feel staff overall are very unfriendly. Possibly not by choice because it is a crowded ship, and possibly understaffed? Or just lack of emglish skills... First signs of this became apparent on an evening dinner At Corona blu restaurant with very slow service. On the other hand the girls at the hospitality desk were very attentive and courteous. Something worth mentioning is that the ship takes new passengers on every port. Can feel chaotic at times as new people embark and partake in the drill, etc No happy hour on drinks but they do have special promotions, the bellini and aperol spritz are worth a try. 5 and 8 euros respectively. Very satisfied with the Club Diadema restaurant choice. Generally if you have to pay you will be treated well. On this note, the spa is worth a look. At 35 euros the day pass it can be pricy but again the facilities are worth the price. Buffet crowded as you would expect but there was a varied menu each day and is worth highlighting the pasta. Very creative and tasty dishes as well as a generous salad bar Breakfast good, you have to go to deck 3 to get eggs. A lot of pastry generally as well as meat , peosciutto ham, cheese etc I recommend going on Diadema, although as an avid royal caribbean cruiser, if i see one option of each that i like at the same price , i will go with royal caribbean. Conversely if costa offers the best price, i will be happy to sail with Costa again. Truthfully , not knowing italian and staff not so friendly, possibly due to low level of english, makes me feel a bit dissatisfied. The ice creams from gelateria amarillo are amazing , at 1.50 euro the scoop. Plenty of choice. Discoteca pietra di luna is worth a look, very classy and great sound system with light functions. What a wonderful way to spend Christmas! So wonderful we are already booking again for next Xmas! This was our second cruise first time with Costa, previous one with MSC. The highlight for us was the Xmas Eve Gala Dinner ( lobster and fillet steak just 2 of the many choices) and believe it or not having eaten so much on Xmas Eve I had not expected to enjoy another gourmet Gala 6 course feast again the following Lunch time on Christmas Day - but we did and it was delicious!! During our 7 days we enjoyed 2 gala evenings pus the Christmas Day Luncheon. A real opportunity to dress up was a nice change and most people did so! FOOD: Overall the food was excellent, we ate mainly in the Adularia restaurant second sitting at 9pm, personally it is a little late for us, but the previous sitting at 6.30 is far too early. However the great thing on this ship is they do offer an "open" sitting option in the Corona Blu restaurant which next time we will ask for. The staff in the dining room could not be faulted and the service always excellent and efficient, the same waitress Katrina served us all week and offered both the food and wine which meant we were never left waiting with an empty glass! There was always at least 4 choices for starter main and dessert with standard alternatives if nothing appealed. Mostly my son and i ordered the continental breakfast in our cabin although breakfast in the buffet had something for all tastes, my husband preferred the table service in the Fiorentino restaurant where apart from a well stocked self service buffet you could order from a variety of international breakfast choices such as the English Full Monty, American Pancakes, German style sausage, salmon & eggs etc, i think there were about 8 options each offering the traditional fare of different countries - Fantastic!! * My only criticism is as a PIZZA lover i would have expected on an Italian ship at least pizza slices to be on offer in the buffet at lunchtime!! There is a separate pizzeria where you can enjoy a great choice of whole pizza's & dessert for @7 euros, we did try this any really enjoyed it, i dont think having pizza also on offer in the buffet would stop people enjoying the pizzeria too!! DRINKS: If you like a drink as we do then the Piu Gusto package is a must and very well worth purchasing if not already included in your fare. I don't understand the people complaining that they have had to pay for water or the price of soft drinks etc ( its a ship!! - drinkable tap water just isn't available - neither is it available where i live in Spain!, everything has to be brought on board so just get over it and pay for the bottled water, or buy a package, Costa go out of their way to offer a range of packages to suit all pockets so if you buy the basic package with no frills or drinks included then don't complain when you have to buy water / coffee etc - At the moment booking a classic package includes wine with dinner & if you pay a little more for the premium package then with Piu Gusto pretty much all you can ask for is included. ( The only exception being Ice Cream! - personally i would like to see this included in the kids Giovani package e.g @ the lido deck ice cream cart ( It costs 1.50 for a scoop so not that bad), if not in the Beautifully appointed Gelateria on deck 5. ENTERTAINMENT: In the various bars there is something to suit all musical tastes, we loved the rock and roll bar where 2 groups of musicians alternated and the atmosphere was lively and entertaining. The piano bar for us was also a great evening entertainment with fab music and dancing. Only saw the one show which was a very impressive acrobatic act. Dance lessons most afternoons really fun to join in, lots of other quizzes and activities. "Shopping precinct" impressive array of shops selling jewellery, clothing perfume and watches etc ideal for some last min xmas pressies. TV: With a 12 year old the TV was a little lacking for him, they could do with more English speaking entertainment channels not just news, Movies were available on a pay per view basis. @approx 9 euros each. INTERNET: BEWARE!!! There is no free Wifi. We bought the 25 euros pkg for my son, but this lasted approx 1 HOUR ONLY! looking at you tube etc, although there is a daily pkg for 4 or 5 euros which is for those who just need to check email / social media! DISEMBARKATION TIP: As a real Plus with Costa as opposed to MSC the disembarkation system was much better, although you had to vacate cabin around 8 am, you had been issued with colour coordinated luggage lables which indicated the time your luggage would be available to pick up in the arrival hall, you could then stay around to eat a leisurely breakfast and disembark at the allocated times between 9 and 11 ish. TIP: If you have an early or am flight out DO ask early enough to have the first slot for disembarkation / luggage collection - We received our green lables quite late on the eve b4 departure with a collection time of 10.30am - but as our flight home was mid am we needed to rush down to the luggage area as soon as they began unloading it @ 9 am BUT as they come off in order we had a nervous while waiting to see if our bags would arrive in time to shoot off to the airport! Luckily they were very quick at unloading the bags and within 30 - 40 mins all ours had arrived. OVERALL a lovely relaxing holiday with plenty to occupy all age groups, the weather in December around the med was warm and sunny most days 6/7, sunbatheable on a few days too!! Read Less

Whilst the onboard experience was generally great there was an issue caused by land-side booking team who need to dramatically improve to provide a complete customer service. It is not just about the onboard experience. More of this at the end We have now done about 15 cruises and this is the second time we have been on the Diadema at this time of the year. The motivation is that in the last week of November and first 2 weeks of December this line and nearly all others in have bargains to be had. As a pre- Christmas break this is excellent value at around £300 for the week. This time we were accompanied by mother-in-law at 91 years old. A little frail and a touch of Alzheimer's but still game for her first cruise. She had always maintained that she couldn't swim so would not go on a ship where you couldn't see land at all times. I think my pointing out that if we did sink, no matter how close land was, she still couldn't swim anyway so the distance from shore didn't matter, may have persuaded her to try it. Or maybe she just wanted to be with her son-in-law. The ship itself is very nice, clean, well maintained and modern. The facilities are excellent and the crew are outstandingly friendly and helpful. Moving around the ship was easy and even with 4300 people onboard it didn't feel crowded except for the usual peak time crowds in the buffet. The entertainment all round is excellent. The headline shows were varied and really well done and we never failed to find a decent seat but we did always go to the theatre at least 10 minutes before the start. The music around the ship was very good and even the cabin entertainment was OK, with 10 English language channels. OK they were mainly news and 1 kids channel but this is still better than most. For overseas readers of this review there were plenty of channels in all the main languages as well. Well done for the effort Costa. Mother absolutely loved the shows, dancing and music. Almost as much as the Asti Spumante. The inside cabins are a good size, better than most, and are well serviced. There was ample storage for a week the lighting is good allowing individual reading without having to have the main lights on (take note Brittania). I really do not like shower curtains though and the water pressure in the shower could have been higher for me. But it was acceptable. Only soap was provided but other items were available on request. The main dining rooms are very attractive and the service is very friendly and fast except for one occasion. The gala menu was new and presented for the first time on this cruise. Supposedly it was devised by and Italian 7* Michelin rated chef. I didn't work this night with an hour delay before most passengers got their first course and frankly the food was nothing special. Frankly the executive chef is better and knows what can be produced on his ship for 4000+ souls in a short period of time rather than a restaurant based chef. I appreciate the experiment and sincerely hope they have now got it right. The food itself on gala night was not as good as the regular menus. We never had a problem finding something that mother would not only eat but also enjoy. Often the food presented was very similar to UK food but with a fancy Italian name. OK there were items on the menu that were very Italian in orientation and we tried as many as possible. Most were superb but of course a very few were not to our usual taste. The buffet on the upper decks always had a very good range of dishes of many national orientations and everything we tried (not much admittedly as we tended to use the main dining rooms) was excellent. The services desk and land tours worked very well and always seemed to be more than adequately staffed with knowledgeable and helpful staff. The ship leant us a wheelchair for the duration for use both on and off the ship. The land based staff seemed to have the idea they were only available for use onboard. Any thank you very much for this, it made getting mother around and onshore sightseeing much easier and frankly less disruptive to other passengers. We all took the drinks package for around £20 pppd. This allowed unlimited beer, spirits, cocktails, bubbly, wine by the glass, and also gave water in the dining rooms if you wanted it, which is a pay for item normally, and included all taxes and gratuities. If you drink a total of 4 drinks per day as well as water with meals it becomes value. Less and pay for it as you go. The Problem We were allocated cabin not close together as requested but separated by 4 decks. This is despite 3 phone calls to Costa Customer services and 2 e-mails to ensure that due to the age and health of mother we wanted to be as close as possible. The customer services staff were lovely and understanding and reassured us that the request was on the system. Unfortunately whoever did the cabin allocations either didn't bother to read the information or ignored it. This upset mother quite badly and took a couple of days with lots of reassurance and phone calls between our cabins to comfort her. Eventually she was quite happy but it really was not necessary for us to go through this. Unfortunately as disembarkation is by decks this also gave us problems here as we only found out the disembarkation times on the morning we were getting off. I know if we had thought about it we could have resolved it but by the time we got back from the evenings entertainment we forgot to look. The disembarkation times and baggage labels were only delivered late after we had gone out. Also, as we had requested a specific disembarkation time it is not unreasonable for all members of the party to be allocated the same time. Disembarkation itself was fine though with a man to push mother and retrieve their wheelchair. No problems Perhaps if the authorities had not closed the M1 for an hour on the way down to Gatwick causing us to miss our plane and subsequent transfers causing us to rush around to purchase more tickets etc, then mother would not have been so upset. I really enjoyed my trip. The crew was nice and welcoming. There were lots and lots of entertainment. We participated in the Lotto draw and my brother in law, won a price i.e. a dinner in one of your esteemed restaurant. He was the one who took us on cruise. The ship is really beautiful. The service also was nice. The only problem is that being an Indian and pure vegetarian my choice of food was very limited. I would very much like to cruise again on your ship. Many of my friends and family members are very interested to come on board your ship on hearing how I had a nice time during my stay on your ship. I wish to thank you the Charming Captain and his crew and wish a belated happy new year 2016 may success crown your path. Read Less

Costa Diadema, November 2015, 7 day Western Mediterranean. Costa's newest, largest and glitziest ship. a version of Carnival's newest Fantasy class. Ports included Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma, Naples and La Spezia. Each port had some passengers joining and leaving, which provides a better atmosphere than the highly regimented, everybody on-everybody off one gets in the Caribbean. Seyne sur Mer, near Toulon, was substituted for Marseille on my departure with a coach transfer provided. I had an inside Classic cabin, I don't care about any of the benefits of a Premium cabin. I did not book with Costa USA and therefore did not have a waterusa package, but I knew this when I booked, I simply added the cost of a water package to the quoted price. The Hotel Service Charge is also part of the Terms and Conditions in Europe. Demographics. Costa is known as a family-friendly cruise line but this trip had few children. There was broad age range, but definitely skewed towards “retired”. Still, a bunch of fun-loving people, not a good choice for anyone who wants Holland America style “relaxing” and “in bed by 8 PM”. Muster. Certified for indoor muster stations. Yes! No more standing on deck. Entertainment. Five rooms with live music, three had double groups, continuous music. Each room has a different theme, but overall, for quality, variety and duration, the music was among the best I have heard on a cruise ship for a decade. None of the dance floors are exactly rectangular, dimensions approximate. Grand Bar Orlov. Double height, into Deck 5. More open feel and much better air circulation. Fake stalactites as decoration, limiting sight lines, as far as I could did not conceal anything like air ducts, just a waste of money. Unlike Cunard's Queen Victoria and Elizabeth where I believe this idea was pioneered, there is a staircase between floors and the upper deck would be prime revenue space if better laid out. The seating is curved in towards the floor, instead of outwards as on Deliziosa, and the open area follows this curve. An excellent idea, needs better implementation. The floor is 52' x only 16'. A nice length but far too narrow for this size of ship, for no really good reason, grossly inadequate for a ship this size. Floorcraft consists mostly of waiting for off-peak times, there is no room to maneuvre around others. The dance team was two very well qualified couples from Hungary (their English was better than their Italian), who focused on Latin, and who put on performances good enough to have won first place at a dance competition. Their classes were technically very good, but I found they were not too familiar with social dancing in Western Europe and Costa had not really told them exactly what experience they wanted for the passengers. While there were no dance hosts per se, the team danced with passengers in the lounge most nights. Teodora 46' x 15' (10') . Used for a variety of themes on different nights, somewhat underutilised. Atrium Elio Doro 24' x 12' A new group came on board in Savona, playing little besides salsa, the area was empty within a few minutes. Costa musicians have a tradition of playing to please the passengers, hopefully they will be modifying their mix. Country Rock Club- Country & Western theme 24' x 12' Good choice for the C&W fans. Piano Bar 16' x 16' Surprisingly good music for a piano bar. Pietra di Luna Disco 36' x 20' Tile but not raised, far safer than on other ships. I did not bother going to the disco. Perla Nerla deck area 60' x 30' Used for various themes and an Argentine Tango private dance party. Not a good dance floor for pivoting or turning. Theatre- I did not go to any of the shows, but I noticed extra staging, I expect the shows would be a bit more Broadway-ish than usual. Food. Overall, good but not spectacular. I rate it as “4” largely because of very limited choice after 9 PM. I do not not want a large MDR meal early in the evening, I prefer a light meal later. Breakfast Italian continental breakfast buffet, 0700-1100. Even at 10 AM, still busy, no one seemed to think the choice inadequate. Cooked meal available in MDR. Lunch As well as the buffet, one dining room offered table service, another self-serve. The buffet was again good but not spectacular. Dinner The lack of choice after 9 PM is by far Costa's weak spot. There was no evening buffet on this trip and the English host did not know of any plans for a change. The Corona Blu area, 500 seats, was used as an open seating alternative, same menu, 5 euro surcharge. It was always busy while the MDR was only half-full for both sittings, a clear passenger preference which hopefully will be noticed in Genoa. Bar prices were comparable to shore prices. On the last night freshly printed menus made an appearance but I did not see any price changes. Cabin 1351. One of the oddly-shaped cabins on this class of ship, with only upper and lower berths (the upper stows into the ceiling). Technically a double, excellent value for a single. Sold as a classic, but I consider this to be one of the best-located cabins on the ship. Customer service, There were agents in front of the counter to handle minor questions. As well as credit card terminals, there were cash machines to accept cash payments. Interactive TV. There is a messaging system which greatly reduces paper (ignored by the spa with its endless hard-copy advertising) but the message-waiting icon is very small and easy to miss. Casino wasn't very busy. Since I invested 20 euros in the slot machines and got back less than 5, I can understand why. Laundry prices seemed reasonable. There was a Magic Bag special but it was timed for Savona passengers and the trip was too short to be worthwhile for me. At the price I paid, excellent value. Overall I was impressed and have recommended my travel agent sell this ship aggressively. Read Less

I am an experienced cruiser,4 star Holland America and Platinum Cunard and I hated my first and only cruise with Costa. I hated it so much I packed my bags to leave the Diadema in Palma after 1 night! I think that says something. I only stayed on board because of the cost in abandoning ship... hotels and flights. I did not expect the sheer and vast difference of a Costa cruise. NO hots drinks 24/7, only at breakfast, which is a bun fight and between 4 and 5 pm, that's all. NO tap water at the table, you have to buy it at 3.30 Euros a bottle. Poor and cheap quality food, padded out with bread or crumbs, stringy chicken, most food was tasteless. Better quality Main dining room available at a supplement!.....never had that before and terrible advertisement for a cruise line. Ship was too full, almost 5000 passengers. To get a seat in the Theatre I had to sit it out for 40 minutes. The Theatre only holds 1200, a quarter of the number on board. At every port there was a change of passengers, Spanish at Palma, Italians at 3 ports and French at Marseille. NO real Luxury around the ship, all hard or wipe clean clean surfaces, even curtains in the dining room were hard plastic. Out of 5000 only 500 English speakers , so be warned it's basically an Italian speaking ship. To sit with a fellow English speaker at breakfast was impossible.....they made it so. The emergency drill lasts forever as you have to sit through multiple languages, I must have witnessed the putting on of a life jacket 6 times. The PA system is used far too much and the centre pool area is beyond noisy. Ship was full of Italian families, loads of strollers and kids. Finally there was a total black out of the ship in Palma, I had, along with others climb 12 flights of stairs. I'm sure it could have been managed better. Ships are havens for older people with mixed abilities, climbing 12 flights of stairs is a recipe to kill!. I would NEVER EVER CRUISE with Costa again and those that have cruised more upmarket lines should beware. Read Less

We've been on cruises before and we were really looking forward to our holiday. I'm a food & travel writer & I travel a lot. No exaggeration, it's the worst holiday experience that I've ever had in my life! Embarking, they x-rayed our bag & tried to take our bottles of wine. 'You must buy your wine on board,' we were told. I told him to get lost & we walked away. We hardly slept at all due to the undisciplined kids yelling & racing up & down the corridor, banging doors till late at night, then early in the morning. Afternoon nap? No way! It was impossible! How about a swim? Every pool was crammed full of yelling, splashing kids. I wouldn't trust my child in there! You wouldn't be able to see if anything happened to them. We'd been promised a kid-free trip as they would be back at school. The ship holds nearly 5,000 passengers, plus the crew & staff. But there aren't enough seats or tables at the horrendous buffet, which starts at about 12.30 & finishes at 3 - when most of the passengers are ashore! There's no choice of restaurants in the evening. We called it the Cattle Battle; wall-to-wall people, all pushing & shoving. Don't believe me? come & see the burn marks up our arms & the stains down our clothes from spilt coffee, available from one urn! I can picture my poor husband, battling through the mob, struggling to hold on to the cups of coffee. Oh the despair on his face! The water dispensers are switched off after meals & you can't drink the water in the cabin. In the evening, the restaurant is miles away from the kitchen & all the food is cold & stuck to the plates. And the chef only knows how to make mashed potato, day after day! I sent most meals back & then the replacements. I was really afraid of food poisoning. I went to bed hungry most nights. One night I was chewing on a piece of dry bread that I brought from our Palma meal. In Naples, I couldn't get out of bed as I was tired, hungry, disillusioned, overdosed on gluten & near to tears. But as the ship sailed at 3 which meant being on board at 2, there was no time to go anywhere. There was a whiff of sewage all over the ship. We christened it the Poop Deck. I've never known such a cold-blooded bunch of money-grabbers in my life. They really should lose their licence. They're a bunch of greedy, lying con-artists. There are other restaurants, but you have to pay, even for a slice of pizza or a coffee. How about the 4D cinema? No, you have to book & pay. Ice cream parlour? 5 euros for a cornet - plus a 15% service charge! And the, um, entertainment? Females in stilletos with a guitarist or a pianist & a tinny background, warbling The girl from Ipanema or Your love is King, night after night. The disco was packed, with people watching all up the stairs & peering over the balcony. We couldn't stroll around as we were battered from all directions. There were crowds everywhere! No joke, if there had been another disaster at sea, we would have been crushed in the rush. We've demanded a complete refund, plus compensation. Read Less

Just got back from our cruise on the diadema first and last time we will cruise with Costa. The ship was way to overcrowded not enough public areas to handle 4000+ passengers. At the buffet we had to wait up to an hour to get food as the were not enough plates for all and then most of the food was cold or undercooked. The two main pools aré way too small to handle all passengers it was like an obstacle course just to get one leg in and inpossible to have a quiet bathe, twice i had two young children land on my head while they were jumping in and out. On the tours we did we were told to be at a dessignated aréa of the ship at 9 o clock so we could get our buses and on both occasions we were still onboard at 11 waiting. We had the all inclusive package yet when we got onboard we had to pay for everything except for a selection of drinks the bufe and main restaurant. The only highlight is the entertaiment team who do all they can do to keep you amussed, and our waiter in the fiorentino restaurant who was brilliant ( lazaro). We go on a cruise almost every year and this was our horrible experience... -Water glass 1.50, everything had a price even coffee and ice cream -Pool was way too small we would have to fight over chairs every time one of us got up there was not enough chairs for everyone on the cruise -Every worker was rude, not polite -Every day new passengers came on the cruise and everything would close for 1 hour while we are at sea to do a fire drill every single day, you can't even buy water -there was No food on the ship, no food when get back on boat and no buffet for dinner if you are hungry during day you can't eat. Dinning room food was okay service was horrible only way to eat good is to pay 30 euros a night at the other restaurants -My Baby cousin wanted French fries at 6 because she was hungry and they wouldn't give her them because her seat dinning was late even though the fries were already made. -there was No air on ship it was cooler outside -To get on the ship they gave us numbers to be called where we waited one hour when we were supposed to have priority check in and then we just cut the line or else we would've waited for 3 more hours for number 22 to be called. -Once on the ship luggages were missing they kept them hiding in the luggage storage for some reason and then u have to go pick it up and find it yourself -Breakfast buffet was not breakfast it only consisted of bread and crossaints if you wanted a real breakfast with eggs and pancakes you would have to get to the dining room before 9 or else they wouldn't serve you. -Casino only can cash 1,000$ at a time if you will more you have to wait every 20 minutes to cash chips in. -bad customer service no one speaks English would never travel on another costa cruise ever again! I have been on 12 cruises now and this is by far the worst I have ever experienced. Here are just a few of the highlights: - VERY poor food (details below) - Cancelled shore excursions - Broken elevators (or locked by the baggage porters and unable to be used) - Charge you for EVERYYHING - Tour guide on English excursion that could barely speak English - Pools are small and overcrowded - Not enough deck chairs for passengers (many fights broke out believe it or not) - Entertainment/shows were a JOKE! - $159 for a 60 minute spa This was the most horrible cruise... I now know why it was so cheap to purchase! The food was almost always cold by the time it got to the table. The lunch buffet was the same food day after day after day. The water costs over $13.00 per gallon to buy! Yes, that's right... $3.40 per liter for water that you can buy off the ship for only $0.39 cents! But it gets worse... they cancelled the only two excursions we wanted to go on in France (they said there were not enough persons so instead of taking a small group they just told me tough luck). Yes, it is true... there were actually FIGHTS over deck chairs because there are not enough for even about 1/2 of the passengers! They would have persons place their towels on the chairs in the morning, not use the chair al day, then show up at 3pm or 4 pm and fight over it. For the show they had a team that couldn't hip hop dance to save their lives, the star woman in the show couldn't dance... the show was pitiful! I have seen better on the street corners. When there are limited elevators already, they closed 2 or the 4 on our section of the ship to transport luggage instead of using the service e elevators! Since one elevator was already broken, that left only 1 elevator out of 4 for us to use. The meat was almost always overcooked (my seared tuna was well done and tasted like it came from a can), most dishes are cold when they arrive at the table and they charge for things like pizza (yes, that's right, pizza that is part of the buffet on other cruises costs you extra here)! Whatever you do, don't use this cruise line! I have been on Royal Caribbean, MSC, Carnival and Norwegian. They are all highly superior to this one... even at the low price! Read Less

First time cruising with Costa, enjoyed it very much. We found the staff very accommodating and helpful. However if you are expecting a formal night with ambience then forget it. Anyone thinking of going to the expense of buying Dinner suit or special dress then save your money! We arrived in the dining room on the 'Gala night' all done up to the nines with suits and black tie to be seated at our normal table, and next to us were our fellow diners dressed in casual attire. It would seem that formal on the Diadema is that Men wear a jacket. We and our friends were very disappointed. The all inclusive package is a must. If you are a light sleeper then avoid cabin 9244 as the staff start cleaning on deck 10, the outside eating area from about 5.30/6am each morning dragging tables & chairs about! Our friends were in this cabin, and to give Costa their due our friends were moved that same day to a much quieter area. Holly, the English rep on the ship was very helpful. Will we cruise with Costa again? Not sure as we were looking forward to a more formal way of cruising. Cannot understand why hot food was not available in th dining room on deck 10 for breakfast as it was served in the same place as hot food was served at lunch! Our friend is disabled and nothing was too much trouble to assist by all members of staff. Read Less

We looked forward with great anticipation to our trip on the Costa Diadema. We last cruised with Costa some 13 years ago and expected changes - but oh dear, this was much worse than we expected. We flew to Barcelona where we spent 2 happy days before embarking on 16th March for a one week cruise to Palma Mallorca, Naples, La Spezia, Savona, Marseilles and back to Barcelona. In no particular order here is a list of things we were unhappy with: 1. We always tip but we like to present our envelopes to the cabin steward, waiter etc, usually with the full recommended amount, occasionally move and less if the serviv=ce has been very poor. Other cruise lines allow this but not Costa. Tips are automatically added to your account with no exception. 2. Usually cruise lines offer talks and some information about the ports to be visited. Costa does not. 3. At dinner other cruise lines have jugs of water and your glass is refilled. With Costa you have to pay for water at dinner. 4. I have yet to discover a cruise line that does not have ice cream/sorbet on the dinner menu. Costa does not have ice on the menu as a stand alone choice or as an option the custard. You can of course leave the restaurant and purchase icecream. 5. There is no hot/cold buffet so that if passengers do not wish to go to the dining room, nor to one of the speciality restaurants, they starve. 6. In all the restaurants I visit if I order mussels I also get a finger bowl to clean my fingers. The waiter didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for one - he soon found out. 7. Waiters did not clean crumbs fron the table. 8. The breakfast buffet was cold - no hat food at all - no eggs etc ugh. We could go to the restaurant for breakfast and wait to be served with a cold English breakfast!!! 9. Room service breakfast had to be paid for. 10. The library was interesting - no books - but they did provide free Kindles but the choice on these was poor - lots of Moby Dick and Pride and Prejudice!! 11.There were not that many British passengers so we thought the English host might have arranged a get together, but no. I am nor sure what she did do. She certainly did not take any questions after her disembarkation talk.We found out from the Dutch representative that we could talk our own luggage off - so much easier. 12. The Captain was pretty anonymous. We are used to a daily Captains update. 13. No booze or cigarettes sold in the duty free shop - but maybe this is in line with EU regulations. 14. The ship was far too hot. 15. In each port Costa laid on shuttle buses at a high cost. However it is pretty easy to do ones own thing and in Marseilles the port provides a regular and free shuttle service into the centre So all in all not an experience we shall repeat. It's back to Royal Caribbean for us. Read Less

I have never been on a cruise this poor. The quality, variety and availability of the food was terrible. Having to pay for the thing such as ice cream, pizza, water, just a snack was absolutely ridiculous. The nightly meals were also very sub par. The chicken breast tasted like fresh out of the freezer. We were not the only ones who felt this way! The food never varied especially at breakfast Not one good thing to say about the buffets. You charged for everything, which is always included in every one of the other cruise lines that we have taken. Which in fact, are many. 45 dollars to see the inside of the ship. REALLY! Just to get off the ship to go to town was 15 dollars. This was a company trip and I would never go with your line again. I would certainly not recommend it to anyone. In fact I have gone out of my way to let others know how bad it was, especially the company we went through to book it. A trip from hell. Read Less

The ship is new and shiny and staff is friendly and efficient and speak excellent English. Embarkation/disembarkation is efficient -- perhaps because guests embark at different ports which means there is manageable number of guests to check in and out at each port. We had a balcony on Deck 2 (2096) which was convenient and a wheelchair access interior cabin (9152) on Deck 9 (HUGE tiled bathroom the size of an entire stateroom). Cabin stewards were efficient and attentive without being intrusive. Dinner in main dining room was outstanding (if you order your meat "rare" you end up with a larger cut every time). Tip: if you like an appetizer or entree and don't feel you got enough or liked the looks of someone else's you can just ask for another and they will bring it to you! Breakfast is a problem for those who don't like "Italian Style" breakfast (cold cuts and fruit and pastries). As other guests have commented the only place where you can get an egg or hot breakfast is in Fiorintina dining room from something like 7 am until 8:30 am. I am not making these hours up. And don't get there at 8:31. No eggs for you! Many people grumbled about this and it seems rather stingy on part of Costa so maybe enough people complain they will change this and offer eggs, etc at main buffet or extend breakfast hours. We got all-inclusive drinks package -- a very good deal -- although they make you pay for the last day when you get off the ship at 9 am, so everyone pays for a day they don't drink much during. But still a deal. Spa is beautiful and treatments reasonably priced and of high quality. BUT just because you book a treatment at the spa doesn't mean you get to use the spa steam room or pool or whirlpool. No way! They charged 35 Euro a day to use spa facilities per person. A total rip off and be warned -- its crowded and therefore not relaxing. Costa should revisit its lease agreement with the spa and demand that guests be allowed to use spa facilities without charge if they book a treatment. Ship is large but lacks a sufficient amount of public space to accommodate the 5,000 guests. I assume public space has been turned into cabins and public space that would normally be, say a large lounge with panoramic views, are "specialty restaurants" that are largely empty because Costa charges a fortune for the upgrade and with quality of food in main dining rooms its unnecessary. Pool decks are small. There is not enough room for everyone, not enough deck chairs, etc and this does not bring out the best in people. That being said, cruise is an excellent value with excellent staff and great ports and we enjoyed every minute, but if feeling a bit crowded will ruin your vacation or make you cranky, then think hard. It took a day to get used to people always being in our "personal space" and bumping into each other, etc. Kudos to Costa on the "automatic" lavatory doors that slide open with a wave of hand -- very cool and sanitary once you figure out how they work. Ports: we are experienced travelers and the only "cruise excursion" we did was to Pompeii -- highly recommended bc ship leaves at 3 that day and timing is tight for self arranged tours. You have time to explore Naples a bit afterwards (don't bother to pay 6E to go into "castle" as there is nothing to see inside and its falling apart. Just take your photos outside. Archeological Museum is a must see if you have already seen Pompeii, etc because everything they found is in the museum. BUT this was not possible on this visit bc ship left at 3 pm. La Spezia: charming coastal town with market on Fridays (Diadema's usual day). See the town then go to Cinque Terre tourist office at the train station BEFORE 1:30pm (we got there at 1:33 pm and office was closed and we had to wait until 2 pm to talk to anyone). The tourist office that sells the rail cards to see Cinque Terre speaks English (and every other language) and will tell you where to go and help you plan schedule to get you to the towns and back in time to meet ship. We got a late start on train after 2pm and still saw 3 of 5 towns and got back in time for early dinner on ship! We tried to do a boat trip to the towns but we were out of season in March and they were not offered. Savona: this was our embarkation/disembarkation port and sadly we didn't really explore it because we were busy hightailing it to Pisa (highly recommended-- leaning tower became everyone's highlight of trip!) and Florence for the rest of the weekend. Marseille: we had a cold, wet day but walked everywhere. Just took the port bus from ship (they charge but its necessary) to center of town. All the major sights are free. Barcelona: Can't wait to go back. We took ship bus to hop on hop off bus (its right there where ship drops you) and had an AMAZING day. One day is not enough to scratch surface of this amazing and beautiful city. Palma: Again, ship bus to center of town. Beautiful island! It's a tiny gem (so clean and tidy!) in the middle of the sea. Cathedral and round castle are must sees (see Cathedral first then take taxi to castle and guy in ticket shop will call a return taxi for you when you are done). There is a hop on hop off bus here but we didn't take it. Please note the "pearls" they sell everywhere are NOT real. They are pretty and well priced but made of ground up shell paste -- so you are not buying pearls. Just so you know. Read Less

Positive: Aimee and Ronald, the waitress and waiter were absolutely awesome. My cousin was horrible to her and she dealt with it like a pro. Regie, the steward. I loved him. If I could've packed him in my suitcase I wouldve. If I ever need a house cleaner I would go to Costa and get a VISA for Regie and hire him!!!! The shows. Great! Best shows on a cruise I have ever seen. I felt like I was watching a good episode of America's Got Talent. The food was good as well. Negative: My family is American Indian which makes us light skin. We are also from Southern United States. We got stared at so much. We felt like the actual people on the ship were so rude. When we walked down the aisle and people didn't move. They shoved and pushed. We asked a few people what the problem was. I had also read reviews on it. The area we were in didn't like Americans or Africans. Apparently they were confused on what we were but judged us anyways. Whatever we started being rude back. The ship is a money trap you pay for everything. The food isn't 24hours it stops at 1am, and that's the Pizza Place, that you have to pay for. Americans get free water, everything else you have to pay for. The ports weren't really developed, but the ships excursions brought you other places. Besides that everything was nice. Read Less

This is an engineering marvel. The ship, brand new or four months old, is really a fabulous construction. The food was more than adequate for a cruise of which this was our 6th. Cleanliness, timeliness, organization and staff training are all superb. Mind you, not being able to use the balconies three out of seven days was absurd as they were 'washing' them. Really. Taking the all inclusive drinks package is the only way as the 15% add-on is hardly fair with drinks at 7 euros 95. Do be careful should you be on the second deck (out of 14) because you bought ''Flash'' price. The night noise as in 3AM with the kitchens and dish washing above you is really beyond belief for a new vessel. When re-approaching the sales people, forget a response. The lack of fresh water is not acceptable. Wine is marginal, too. Unfortunately the tourists constantly getting on/off at each port allows for suitcases blocking the corridors each night. Plus loud passengers in the hallways all night..., but that is not the company's responsibility. While the chef did his best, he did it seven times, without changing. Even the fixed nightly meal never changed, all six courses. The breakfast and lunch were NEVER changed. Too bad that so many things are great but are ruined by a few administrative decisions by the powers that be who obviously have never cruised with real people, and I have to expose this to you. I could not live with myself if I did not... although housekeeping is absolutely the best in the world. Read Less

Lovely ship with the Deck 5 outside walkway all round the ship an excellent feature. Well designed cabins. Entertainment to suit all tastes. Younger ones can enjoy loud music up in Deck 10 and the Disco, while older ones can enjoy the quieter bars, music, dancing available on Deck 4 and 5. Theatre shows were excellent but you have to get in 30 minutes before to get a decent seat. Not a problem as you can sit and have a cocktail. Food was good with reasonable choice in the main restaurant. The food in the buffet was also good but often struggled to find a table. No hot breakfast in the buffet but great choice with waiter service in the main restaurant. Staff on board were all very efficient and friendly. The all inclusive drinks package was excellent with big choice of cocktails, branded spirits and liqueurs, wine by the glass with limited choice but OK. Avoid the ship during school holidays if you are an older couple. Even in March, the pools were monopolised by families with kids. Three downsides which could be improved by Costa would be, (a) Port disembarkation manned by 1 member of staff to barcode read your Costa on board card ! Caused havoc when trying to get off the ship. (b) No encouragement from Costa for passengers to use hand washes. (c) Tour 1495 to Scenery of Cinque National Park was the worst ever tour from a tour operator and logistics viewpoint. (the 3 places visited met expectations). Costa had subcontracted the tour to Trumpy Tours and did not point out that the rail portion was public transport in an overcrowded, smelly train with little or no chance of getting a seat but a higher chance of being pick pocketed ! The supposed tour guide was a joke, very poor communication in English and lacked organisation skills. Avoid this tour. I dread to think how it would be in the height of season. Read Less

We had a packagetravel arranged by Costa through our normal travelagency in Copenhagen. They are not to blame. Costa had booked flights with Lufthansa with stop in Frankfurt. Delay in 40 min. ment that the luggage did´nt come with our connecting flight to Turin. To small timedifference was the cause. Great trouble in Turin airport because we had difficulty contacting our transfer waiting outside. We made a damagereport (PIR) and the said the luggage would reach us in Barcelona 2 days later. So 4 persons and a baby without 6 pieces of luggage going on a cruise. Only 2 small handbags to take on board. Very slow action on board from Guestt Relation Staff resulted in contact to my travelagency in Copenhagen WHO really acted on a sunday. Frequent visits to Guestrelation on board only resulted in phonecalls and no personalaction to get the luggage from Barcelona Airport to the ship so we left Barcelona without the promised luggage. It would now be sent to Palma. Only pressure from Copenhagen and myself resulted in the Luggage was sent to Palma immediately and the Next day - 4 days after sailing from Savona - it was delivered to the ship late afternoon. It did´nt stop there. Costa had booked 2 different planes back home for our Family. 1 from Turin and 1 from Milan Linate. All together one of the worst cruises ever og 31 cruises. After a bad expirence with Costa in the Easter 2014 we would give Costa a new chance on Diadema - the newest in the fleet. The ship is OK, but the service and staff is now so bad that this was our last Costacruise. In the future it will only be NCL, RCCL and Celebrity. We have just done this cruise for 7 days from Barcelona and it was fantastic .check in at Barcelona took less than 30 mins we arrived at 12.30 and embarkation started at 2 pm so we chilled in the bar area with a wee glass of wine then we were called from 2 pm and were on the ship and in our beautiful cabin by 2.35pm .we decided to explore the ship and get our bearings as its huge ,when we returned to our room which had been upgraded to a balcony our luggage was waiting outside .The cabins are very spacious will everything you need . We were given first sitting for dinner so we asked concierge if we could change and there was no problem we just had to wait till the following night and a card was placed in our room to tell us which table and resturant we were assigned too . The food is amazing from breakfast to lunch to afternon tea to dinner there is absolutely nothing you can fault .we upgraded to the all inclusive package for 25euros per day but was well worth the money as soft drinks ,tea, coffee, hot chocolates, beer, water, spirits, wine (even prosseco) were included in this till the last bar closes which some nights were 3am . The entertainment is second to none and as this is our 11 th cruise but the first time with costa we were well impressed .we honestly read some of the reviews before we went and were a bit worried but I'm sure these people who complained must have been on a different ship from us and as we are in the hospitality trade we notice more than most .The staff were fantastic very professional and were very happy and content in their jobs we have to give a special mention to Elmir and Marco in grand bar Orlov, Elmir the Portuguese and Brazilian host who we spoke a lot too,all the guys in the piano bar upstairs and our waiters in the resturant and many more as they work endless hrs but always have a smile and even though there were 4000 passengers on this ship we never had to wait to be served a drink or to have buffet in the day time . We had breakfast in our cabin 3 mornings ( for a 5 euro supplement) but was well worth it you can choose as many things from the menu as you want from cereal to full cooked breakfast with steak, eggs Benedictine ,pancakes and fresh fruit we had a small problem one morning when the food wasn't hot but the situation was resolved in 5 mins . I took part in many cruises. Costa Diadema - a really beautiful ship. Entertainment - good, but one night without evening show. Why? Many bars, many places with music. Food - great. But Costa Diadema has water, tea and coffee only during breakfast, during lunch only water. After this you must pay for any drink. OMG, first time of my many cruises I had to pay for water after 3 pm. I couldn't drink water, tea or coffee whenever I want without payment - a very commercial approach to the guests. No night snack. No evening pizza - only for money. Dinner - waiting, waiting, waiting... Usually 10 min. to get a menu, 15 minutes to give the order, after next 20 min. you get first dish. Waiters need more training, one waiter was professional, so organization of work is the problem. I was no presentation of the crew and the captain during night show - beautiful tradition during every cruise. This makes me to come back for a next cruise. So, Costa Diadema has a great potential and should improve some things. Now - I prefer MSC and NCL. Read Less

We have traveled before with costa's second biggest ship but the difference is night and day. The cabin had a broken air condition (it smelled terrible when turned on). I was served rotten mussels, upon asking to see the chef I was told to speak to the Maître D instead who had no words (literally didn't even apologize) just had the plate replaced. Receptionists on Deck 3 always looked stressed out and irritated when critique came their way the response. carried an arrogant undertone. Left a message at the reception to friends, which they never got. No towels near the pool anymore. You get your blue pool towel in your room once a day now. No shrimps on the menu/buffet. Nights were terribly loud!!! Impossible to sleep on deck 6 from all the noise on deck 3 and the room was nowhere near the elevators. Now about the animation during the day... Ultra loud Zumba music almost blew my ears I could hear it well from the outside pool area. My cell phone was stolen in the gym, turns out it's the only place where they don't have cameras on this ship. The buffet breakfast and lunch was always the same, very boring. Again, no comparison to the buffet from Costa Pacifica in 2012. Water now costs 3 euro per 1L plastic bottle, meanwhile they claim to be worried about the environment! When we got the room delivered continental breakfast there was a big black hair in my milk glass. The decor of this shipis hideous, and the silverware, napkins, sheets are all older than the ship itself. The theme seems to be "massturism hits cruise" without the discount pricetag. My advice is to stay far away from Costa Diadema Read Less

First impressions of the ship were that she was extremely well presented and fitted to a high standard. We were one of the very few guests from the Uk on board, and thought we might struggle with the entertainment. This was not a problem , as it was mostly in English. The shows were very good and we enjoyed all the entertainment. The communication issues of having to repeat everything in around 5 different languages, was very monotonous, making quizzes etc not worth the effort.! Many tour excursions for UK guests were not available- I suspect because there were not enough participants to warrant an English translator. Costa allow boarding at every port so it felt more like a hop on / hop off type amenity , and we did not experience the excitement you normally get on other cruise lines of the all on board sail off, when everyone boards together. Each day people were walking around with life jackets for their embarkation drill, which again meant the atmosphere never felt a relaxed or settled ship! We took the drinks package , which was good value - well we are Irish! One thing they didn't tell us that it doesn't apply to 3 of the speciality bars. The cabin was lovely, with great balcony and views , right at back of ship. One small thing I thought was a bit penny pinching for a brand new ship , was the fact they had shower curtains , rather than proper shower doors. Food in evening restaurant was good but forget breakfast! . You either have to queue for dining room for a hot seated breakfast, and that's before 9 am ,! Now who wants to do that on holidays unless your on an early trip?? Otherwise it was a cold continental breakfast in the buffet , or limited cold sundries served to your cabin! We didn't bother! Our biggest complaint- was that the ship was just too packed, with over 5000 guests on board. This caused problems with access for lifts, bar areas and buffet dining, during peak times. In the summer I also suspect sunbathing areas will be a problem , as I cannot fathom where people will go on sea days! By way of comparison , take a look at the new P&O Britannia. She is a bit bigger than this ship yet she will only carry 3000 passengers. Now what does that indicate??? Finally boarding at Naples was a Health and safety risk just waiting to happen. It was so much so, I made a formal complaint to management. I likened it to having the potential bot become another Hillsborough football disaster, because the ship arrived late and too many guests all tried to re board at once. The port authorities kept letting them into the boarding dock, and the 3 gangways couldn't cope. There was no queuing system at all , yet more people were let through than the gangway attendants could handle. People started to push from the rear and port authorities still let more people through in to a limited space! It was a bit frightening as I feared a major crushing incident or people getting pushed off the pier! Management did agree to review their procedures In summary- okay- but have been on much better!   Read Less
