We chose the Danube River Cruise because of the cities visited and length of the cruise (our first time river cruise). We booked everything through Viking and did not have to worry about transportation connections. They were there to meet us upon our arrival. The cruise was everything that we hoped for. Beautiful ancient European cities, scenic landscapes, OUTSTANDING FOOD AND SERVICE on ship, comfortable room and smooth river ride. Make sure your on the top lounge deck passing through the Wachau Valley. The regular shore excursions were perfect. I would recommend booking two, not more than three additional excursions. I especially enjoyed the separate boat ride down the Danube narrows to the Abbey. Don't overeat on ship, because you will want to have room to enjoy the local specialties as well. Make sure you visit the old sausage shop and enjoy the local beer. Take a lot of pictures, but don't worry if you miss some. Viking sells a thumb drive of pictures taken through out you trip at a reasonable price. Upon my return, I created a photo book of over 65 pictures (I took 170). I had my photo taken in Budapest enhanced to 16 X 20, framed and matted. Since it was our anniversary, Viking gave us a quality bottle of champagne. We are currently planning our 2017 trip with Viking and can't await our new adventure. Read Less

Have traveled extensively in Western Europe but wanted to explore Eastern Europe. Cities like Berlin, Nuremburg, Dresden, Vienna and Budapest were ones we always wanted to visit. This Viking trip provided all that and more. We went into it with some skepticism as we had never taken an organized trip before, but the manner and organization of this trip changed our skepticism into a most positive experience. The other thoughts to add was that the entire staff and tour guides were excellent and most helpful. Service and responses were always timely and very customer friendly. We also enjoyed meeting new people and in the smaller ship environment got to know many and have already stayed in contact with many of them. End Read Less

We had wanted to take a river cruise for some time and this was our first. We were accompanied by my wife's sister and her husband and we were both celebrating wedding anniversaries. We loved the cruise and the excellent treatment we received from the entire Viking crew. All of our tours were very good and the experience of our guides was amazing. We took advantage of most of the optional tours and enjoyed them very much; however, it didn't allow much free time. In Vienna we were treated to a special private performance put on by a group of aspiring opera singers and musicians. My wife and her sister both waltzed with a leading man from the cast which contributed to a very memorable and enjoyable evening. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent meals that we enjoyed during the cruise and the attentive service that we experienced. We highly recommend Viking river cruises. Read Less

We took this cruise to experience the beautiful scenery along our route through Hungary, Austria, and Germany. We extended our trip to experience Prague in Czech Republic. The excursions were well planned and gave a good feel for the locales visited. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and personable and provided perspective to the sights. The towns visited were quaint and colorful. They had a great European feel, and we were provided plenty of time to wander and enjoy the local sights and foods. As opposed to an ocean cruise there was very little sensation of moving on our ship, the Viking Tor. The engine noise was almost undetectable, and the rooms were quite. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. One never had to ask more than once to get a service. The food on board was well prepared and there were plenty of choices more than enough to satisfy anyone's tastes. It was our first river cruise and I would highly recommend the experience to anyone. For a first time cruise, we wanted to go for a shorter length of time and the Danube's attractions were intriguing. We were thrilled with the entire experience! From the moment we landed, Viking was there for our luggage and comfortably escorted us to the port. Every excursion was well thought out and personalized service the entire time. The guides in each port were knowledgeable as well as entertaining. The sights were beautiful and we had plenty of time to do as we wished which was a main concern having mostly traveled on our own with friends. We found a perfect balance of an organized excursion and time to just visit the towns taking in the feel of each. The accommodations were perfect, the rooms maintained beautifully and the staff throughout the trip, in all it's facets were outstanding! We truly can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our trip! We wanted to experience some of the best cities along the Danube River. However, we also wanted to spend some time in Prague before the cruise began. It was all absolutely super. The Hilton hotel was great - the restaurants were excellent - the tours were the best - - the one that comes to mind was at the Lobkowitz Palace. After the bus trip from Prague to Passau, It was great to unpack once and then begin one of the best cruises anyone could ask for. The crew, the food, the tours led by locals who knew what they're talking about, the new long ship boat, the accommodations - - everything - - was of the highest caliber. We loved the many churches and abbeys. We wished that we had more time in Vienna and Budapest was fabulous. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone considering taking a river cruise anywhere. I wanted to do a Danube cruise. The staff was outstanding, it is difficult to single out any of them, but the concierge and entertainment director were certainly wonderful. Enjoyed the stops and excursions, even though the weather was pretty rainy and cold during the entire cruise. The food, as well as the service were also great, and the visit to the kitchen was very interesting. So was the strudel making lesson! The nighttime arrival to Budapest was spectacular! In my opinion, perhaps the visit to Vienna was the least interesting part of the cruise, a few hours are not sufficient to get to know Vienna even in the most superficial way. I would recommend that the ship spend two night there, it would allow a visit to some of Vienna's great museums. Much enjoyed the visit to the market, led by the Chef of the ship. All in all this was a most enjoyable cruise, spectacular views, excellent staff and service, great food and the included alcoholic beverages are also excellent. Read Less

We had taken the Rhine Rhapsody cruise in 2015 and were very pleased with it. The service, food and shore excursions (and guides) were all excellent. There was a younger demographic this time, and people seemed more diligent about attending the daily briefing sessions making them aware of the different levels of difficulty of the shore excursions. This meant fewer delays for those who chose the more strenuous excursions. There were several passengers who missed the boat after shore excursions which caused delays to the rest of us. In fact, our program director told us that there were more people who missed the boat during our one week than during the whole of the 2015 season! Overall, we enjoyed ourselves immensely. If we had to voice one criticism about the excursions, we felt that the tour of Vienna was a bit too brief (we were on Danube Waltz). We would highly recommend the 3-day add-on in Prague. Also, despite the fact that we had to leave the ship at 4:00 AM, we appreciated being given Sky Priority and Premium Economy status for the flight back to Toronto. Read Less

We chose a Viking cruise for our first cruise ever. This was based on their excellent reputation, the itinerary, and size of boat. The boat was very nice. There were approx 200 people on the boat, so it was not crowded and it gave a chance to meet a lot of people. The food was excellent! Their were special menus each night to reflect the country we were in at the time. Also, unlimited wine, beer, or soda with lunch and dinner. We paid extra for the drink package to have drinks at other times as well. I noticed this package is often included now on other Viking cruises. There were tours included at each port for free. The tour guides were excellent, very knowledgeable about the culture and history of their country. Other excursions were also available for an extra charge, which we did such as the wine tour in Austria and the Vienna opera concert. The rooms were very nice and clean and a good size. We had a balcony to sit on if we wanted which was a nice option. Great trip, would highly recommend! Our trip was from Passau Germany to Budapest on the Danube. Read Less

What a wonderful way to travel. I've loved cruising for a long time, but I was tired of the hassles of being on a boat with thousands of strangers. There were only 180 passengers on the Tor. The ship was beautiful and luxurious. Our cabin was comfortable. The food was delicious and the wine flowed generously. I loved it. Cruising on Viking gave us all the comforts we are used to as Americans while allowing us a much more immersive experience at the ports we visited. Travel can be hard, but Viking made it easy. Beyond dealing with the crowds, another thing I hated about cruising on big ships was the time wasted going from one part of the boat to another and all the rigmarole of embarkation and debarkation. On the Tor, instead of leaving our cabin 15-20 minutes ahead of time to get anywhere, it only took a matter of seconds to get everywhere I wanted to be - the dining room, the lounge, the sun deck or the shore. And food? WOW. Delicious food, impeccable service and great wines included in the price of my cruise. On a previous ocean cruise I was overwhelmed by the necessity to manage our meals and beverages. Viking removes all the hassle and makes cruise dining a pleasure again. The one thing I thought I might miss from the bigger ships was the entertainment, but I was wrong. Viking brought exceptional talent on board and to enjoy it all I had to do was wander down to the lounge after dinner. The intimate setting allowed me to really appreciate the talented performers. Don't expect a Broadway production, but don't expect to miss the extravaganzas either. When it comes to the ports and shore excursions, there are no words to adequately express how integrated I felt to our destinations. It was even better than the insulated feel of a hotel. You just walked off the boat and were in the middle of town. You could even stand on the boat and feel a part of the city life. If you cruise to be entertained by the boat, then you will miss the swimming pools, theater, shopping etc. etc. etc. But if your focus is the destinations you want to experience, then you will love Viking. We chose a river cruise for our very first cruise experience because we did not want to travel with thousands of people on an ocean cruise. We added a pre-extentsion in Budapest to have additional time to explore Hungary (birthplace of my grandparents) and to adjust to the time difference and long flight. Connections to embarkation port and disembarkation went very smoothly. We felt safe and well cared for in the foreign airports, and all provided travel was very comfortable. We had a lower level cabin that suited us fine. All aspects of the ship- crew, service, ship, dining, entertainment, activities, and shore excursions were superb! We enjoyed the delicious local foods, and beverages; the wait staff was professional and friendly, providing the best personalized service. The concierge helped us with our many questions and and to plan additional activities we wanted to do. We don't know how Viking can do this any better. Took the Nurenburg to Budapest tour with the prague extension. Great wait staff, great food, but many internal problems. Checked out of Prague Hilton at the mandatory 10am checkout to board a bus at 1pm. They refused to offer a checkout extension, and 70 people spent 3 hours wandering the lobby and outside, because of their poor scheduling. A third of their on board tv channels don't work. All we could watch was bbc news and cnn. The internet service is worse than cheap dialup, if it works at all. We did the majority of our water traveling at night, so forget about casually sitting on your deck watching the scenery. Some of the optional tours are run at the same times as the regularly scheduled tours, so you can't do both and have to choose between one and the other. They cancel some optional tours if not enough people enroll, so a tour you have been looking forward to go on, you may never see, because of their cheapness in honoring optional tours unless they have a minimum number of 15 takers. Don't pick a young guide, for they are not, well versed. Select one at least 40, for the new ones aren't as knowledgeable as the older ones. When dining, pick the smaller restaurant on the upper forward level of the boat rather than the main dining room. They give you a little less eating selections, but it is worth it to get the great personal service. Pick your optional tours before getting on the boat, and pick them more than 7 days before departure, for they charge you in euros rather in dollars, when you pay on the boat. What they call bier is not the reqular german beer-it is manufactured especially for americans and has less alcohol content than the native beer.Go ashore to sample the bier. https://fr.tripadvisor.ca/ShowUserReviews-g274887-d2075771-r359135515-Judit_Guia_Turistica_Budapest-Budapest_Central_Hungary.html# Read Less

As beginners with Viking River cruises, we thought the Danube experience would give us the opportunity to see several European countries and cities, especially Vienna and Budapest in a safe and convenient way. We thought that in our fiftieth year of marriage the trip would be a good way to celebrate ourselves. We took full advantage of the included tours and added the Vienna Mozart and Strauss music event as well as the Vienna chef's tour to the Noshmarkt. Our cabin was lovely, the evening entertainment shipboard was festive, the food always top-notch. I did minimal research on our cities of call, but learned much more with our time ashore. Staff members were more than cordial--began to feel like old friends. In a word, we felt "pampered" by the Viking experience. From the very beginning, we were met by staff upon arrival, escorted to our ship, welcomed warmly, and with each additional adventure, we learned about the history, culture, and people. Each guide in each city was informative but never "lecture--y." We enjoyed meeting other travelers, those from other U.S. states as well as Canada and Scotland. Wonderful trip. We were happy to see our servers and guides during our outings, and upon our return. The captain seemed happy to interact with guests, and a number of people visited the upper deck and the helm. Learning about the technology was interesting, too--the need for the wheelhouse to retract in order to fit under the low bridges was quite an engineering feat! Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We have taken larger ship cruises before. We had visited Germany several years before in the Fall and wanted to go back during the Christmas markets. The price of the cruise was one that we could not pass up. When we landed in Nuremburg we were met by the Viking representatives and taken to our ship. Check in went very smoothly and we were able to get into our cabin right away. Our cabin was very nice and well appointed. We do not get the most expensive cabin as we do not stay in the cabin much. It was well appointed and the toiletries were excellent. They had a lunch set up for the passengers that arrived that day. The food on the Tor was fantastic and the wait staff was terrific. You could order from the menu or do the buffet for breakfast and lunch . Dinner was ordered from the menu. There was unlimited beer and wine at both lunch and dinner. We visited the Christmas Markets in seven different cities. I enjoyed each of the cities but my favorite is Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber. Each market has it own uniqueness. We had time after the tours to visit each market and of course to sample the Gluvine in each town. Came home with a collection of the mugs from each town. I wish I had had more room in my suit case for more purchases. We did all of our Christmas shopping on the trip. The tour guides that we had were very knowledgeable and friendly. We are seasoned ocean cruisers who mainly travel in Europe but this was our first river cruise. All those years of watching Masterpiece Theatre and we finally succumbed to the lure of Viking's enticing advertisements! Well. Let me say this. They delivered. We had a wonderful time; in fact we're already booked for another Viking cruise in August. We got a deal on a Christmas Market sailing that included airfare. We hadn't a clue if we'd even like river cruising so we took the least expensive cabin, the ones known as "aquarium" cabins as they're only just above the water line. It worked out just fine. Prior to this we'd never done an inside cabin except once and that was a virtual balcony on the Quantum of the Seas. Given how small Viking longships are, it was only a minute to take the stairs and be outside in fresh air. We didn't miss the balcony one bit--and this is from someone who spends huge amounts of time on balconies on ocean cruises! Go figure. Our cabin was well designed and we had ample space for all our clothing. The bathroom is very small but efficient and well lit (as is the rest of the cabin, which we appreciated when reading in bed). One of the nicest things was that the small fridge was exactly that. A fridge, not a cooler. We bought beer and wine at several towns and were very pleased at how cold our beverages were. The food was marvelous. And so pretty on the plate. We thought it was easily on par with what you get in the specialty restaurants on ocean cruises. The service is very attentive and the wine/beer flowed freely. Top marks to Viking in this department, especially for the German dinner they put on for us. Authentic German food and entertainment in the dining room and all the servers even dressed in period costume. It was great fun! Entertainment? We knew coming in that there wasn't much of it. A piano player is what you get most nights. However, there were other nights when local entertainers came on board. We were treated to an operatic performance and two different choirs, all of which were excellent and much appreciated. I wondered beforehand if we might be a little bored on board as we really like all the entertainment options of ocean cruises. However, we found our fellow guests very sociable and it was no time at all before we'd made friends to socialize with up in the lounge and the time always flew by. I'd even go so far as to say it a great change of pace not to have entertainment options by the score! We were very lucky in that by the time we got on the Tor, water levels in the Danube had risen and we had a flawless sailing. The weather was fairly mild for the end of November though overcast and rainy. No problem though as Viking provides big red umbrellas and all our tours went on without a hitch. I must say that the complimentary tours were excellent. Every single one of them. Whoever hires guides for Viking passengers should be given a big pat on the back because they've done their homework. All our guides were well-versed in their subject matter and even better, enthusiastic and committed to showing their towns/cities to the best advantage. We thoroughly enjoyed our outings. Random notes about our cruise: we were in the "aquarium" cabins and yes, you will hear water and changes in engine noise when slowing down or speeding up (as when entering locks). If you're a light sleeper, either bring earplugs or upgrade to a higher cabin. We weren't the least bit bothered by the sounds after the first night. We got used to it pretty quickly but other people might not. Another thing is that food isn't available 24/7 as it is on ocean cruises. Meals are served at set times and that's it aside from muffins and cookies that were always available by the coffee/tea machine. No pizza when the mood strikes you! We actually liked this set up though because honestly, we didn't need to be snacking. Not when there's so much food available at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We returned from our Viking cruise very relaxed and happy. The Tor has a great crew. They really care about their guests and it shows. We are looking forward to our next cruise in the summer! This cruise was very well enjoyed by everyone in our party. We had three balcony rooms in our group. We booked late and there were no lower categories available. The accommodations were very nice and the crew/staff were excellent. Granted, we did have some problems, none of which were the fault of Viking. However, they handled them all very well. The first problem was a strike by Lufthansa four days before our flight. I was glad I booked the trip with inclusive air as it would have been MY nightmare trying to reschedule flights instead of theirs. They booked us on another airline and it was fine. The water level in the Danube was too low for the ship to make it to Budapest so we were put on it's sister ship on the second night. The first night they put us up in a very nice hotel. Again, everything was handled very professionally and smoothly by Viking. Yes, we had to take a coach to the ship and again at another point but the coaches they use are first class. The person who claimed there wasn't enough to eat or that there was no entertainment obviously isn't sophisticated enough for this type of cruise. Having done the big ships to the Caribbean, it was refreshing to travel on this small boat with a lot less people. The food was wonderful as was the service. If you were hungry on this trip, you must have a tapeworm. I had asked for more pillows on the first night aboard and when we switched ships midweek, my extra pillows were already in the room and didn't have start over with the new crew. I know that time of year is iffy for the weather but we had great weather. Each day they take you on a tour in the morning and then you can sign up for an optional tour in the afternoon. We are in our late 40's and lead pretty active lives and felt like we did plenty each day. We had folks in their mid 70's to 80 in our party and they did pretty well keeping up. They have separate tours that cater to those who are slower moving if you feel you can't keep up or you can just sit on the ship and look at the scenery. Plenty of places for a good view. They have local tour guides at each stop and some are better than others but overall they were all good and it gives you a good overview of each place the ship stops. I'm usually too cheap to do the all inclusive but in this instance, I'm glad I did. They pick you up from the airport and take care of you until they help you check in for your return flight home. No thinking necessary, just sit back and enjoy! Read Less
