Previously, I had been on one ocean cruise and did not prove to be a good sailor - green the whole week. With some trepidation, I tried the Romantic Danube cruise by Viking and it was a complete success! There is no dressing to impress on this river cruise (as there was on the ocean cruise by a different company). Casual comfort is the way to go. Now I know how to pack for next time - jeans, shorts, simple slacks, maybe a simple skirt or dress. Very relaxed. The size of the ship (about 100 guests) made for a wonderful ambiance. The passengers were very friendly and social, taking opportunities to meet and dine with others. The staff were so warm and hospitable, looking after our every need. Once, when we missed dinner, they prepared food for us. Beverages and snacks were always available. All of the meals were light and nutritious. The excursions were so well organized, interesting and used such charming, professional guides. Wished we had gone to Budapest 3 days early so we could have explored it in more detail but loved what we saw. The Gottweig Abbey in Austria was very memorable. Sailing in the Wachau Valley on a gorgeous fall day was so beautiful.I will never forget the Nuremberg War Trials excursion. Take advantage of the daily panoramic excursions. The 3 day extension in Prague was wonderful. This was my first river cruise...but NOT my last! Read Less

Of all the cruise lines, we chose Viking based on recommendation from friends and neighbours and they did not disappoint. They are a first class company and the people they employ display the same qualities. They were extremely well trained and knowledgeable about the history of the countries we travelled to and they all went out of their way to ensure we had the best possible experience. The ship was beautiful and the food was great. They were very well organized and embarkation and disembarkation was very smooth. The tours were great and very interesting and well organized. All the staff were very friendly and it was apparent our needs came first. The cabins were well organized and the rooms as well as the ship was spotless. The entertainment provided was very good and it was nice to get some of the local culture.Overall everything was above our expectations and we definitely travel with Viking again in the near future. First time river cruise-- met and/or exceeded expectations. Did all the included tours and 5 additional. Tour guides were great and very knowledgeable . Service onboard was excellent. Food was also high quality Tour director Boris was the best. Never had to worry about anything. Looking forward to another river cruise in 2018 and already booked ocean cruise on viking in Jan 2018. Stayed in Prague for 3 days prior to cruise, very well worth it, in retrospect should have stayed three additional days in Budapest. The cabin was very nice, clean and well maintained. Upgraded to a two room suite, plenty of room, approximately 400 sq ft. Bathroom floors were heated, very nice amenitiy. Overall a great experience, very relaxing, however there were always plenty of activities if you wanted to do more. Do not think the beverage add on is worth the cost. You would have to drink a lot in addition to what is provided in order to justify cost Read Less

We chose Viking because we heard nothing but wonderful information regarding Viking from friends & associates. Everything their brochures and website said they would do or provide was completed with a smile and a positive attitude. We were met at the airport on time, immediately brought to the Viking Thor, welcomed and given simple details, escorted to our room which had champagne, beer, spirits, and fresh fruit awaiting us. Throughout the cruise the staff was there to explain all the events available, serve our needs, and provide small group tours (10 people at most) for the city tours at docking ports. The food was excellent, the chef explained daily what he would prepare for us. Comfort, relaxation, and warmth by the staff could not be any better. The best part is the fact that the Viking Thor only accommodates approximately 170 passengers enabling guest to intermingle and make new friends without being overwhelmed. Also, on our cruise there were no kids which made it a quiet cruise and enabling senior guests to not worry about children running and bumping into them. We plan on doing another cruise in 2018. This was my first river cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg and I loved it! The staff was wonderful. The Hotel Manager and Concierge( I am so sorry I did not write down their names) were pleasant and so professional and efficient. Our Program Director Boris was amazing. My favorite was Joven the waiter who provided impeccable service with a smile three times a day for seven days. His recommendations for menu items was spot on! In retrospect, I should have gotten back on the ship and cruised back to Budapest enjoying excursions I missed on the way and the ambiance of the ship. The 3 day extension in Prague was not of the same quality at all. I certainly hope that Viking continues to provide such a high quality of service. I will never go on a typical ocean cruise from the states again. The other passengers were well travelled, friendly and interesting. PS...The laundry service was excellent. Read Less

We have never been on an ocean cruise because there are just too many people. I felt badly that my husband didn't get to see as much as I did when we travelled by car, so I booked a river cruise as a gift. It was intimate enough that we knew most of the folks by name by the time we were back. Meals are always open seating, which encourages mingling with new folks. Wine or beer is always available with the meals & no fancy dress is ever required. The food was fabulous, tours well organized with great guides! Our first river cruise was with a different company & Viking was an even better value for the money - all the way around! I can't say enough about the wonderful staff, both on the phone and on board the boat. they solved each & every problem with almost no effort & always to our satisfaction! Great trip & great company. This was our fourth viking river cruise. i thought the food was excelent and really enjoyed the ship...breakfasts were wonderful. this was our first longboat cruise and enjoyed the aquavit lounge. There was an unexpected and early heat wave that made vienna and budapest uncomfortable but what can you do. Our hotel in Budapest was wonderful and had a room with a direct view of the Parliment Bulding and found a wonderful cafe the Viking staff had recommended We arrived at the ship about 8:30 in the mornng and all the previous tour people hadn't left but we got into our room a litle after 9. We knew wheer the coffee machine and sweets were, so partook of those first while we waited I. WOULD HAVE LIKED TIME IN PASSAU(I WENT TO SALSBURG) AND MORE TIME IN Vienna. There seemed to be a lot of first timers on the ship and they were impressed. we made friends with some. Good time by all!.... Read Less

Know many people who have traveled on river cruises. Many have chosen Viking so we decided to give them a try. We were not disappointed in any area. Transitions were seamless. Accommodations were fine, dining well done with varied choices at every meal. Very clean! Professional and friendly crew members. Never wanted for a thing! The itinerary was fabulous. Every stop interesting and historical, and the tour guides local and insightful. The extension to Prague was wonderful. Accommodations and tours excellent. Beautiful city. Wish we'd had more time at the beginning in Budapest, also a beautiful and historic city. The evening cruise to see city lights and the city tour were fabulous. The cabin was very well designed with plenty of room for clothing. Even the small bathroom was efficient with enough space for all toiletries. The balcony was a nice touch though we didn't use it often. Very interesting passing through the locks along the way. The included tours were all interesting and thorough. But there were many optional tours that were difficult to chose from. All we chose were well worth the additional expense. The buses for tours were comfortable and easily accessible. Read Less

We wanted a special adventure for our 50th Anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the fact that everything was provided, all the details were pre-arranged and we were able to relax and enjoy. The on-shore tours and local guides were excellent, on-board experience was wonderful, and the cities we visited were great. The pre-trip in Prague was a wonderful introduction for our trip. We enjoyed the walking opportunities in each location and participated in each of the provided on-shore tours. We also enjoyed several of the optional excursions as well as the opportunities to have some free time to explore on our own. The history, foods, culture, architecture and people were all very great experiences. The staff on-board went above and beyond to provide for us and were present when needed, but also unobtrusive and efficient. This has provided great value for the cost of our cruise. We highly recommend this cruise and would love to have another opportunity some day. Read Less

We chose this cruise, having been on Viking previously, to see places we had not been before. There seemed so much breadth in history and culture to see, and we were so very right. Simply riding the Danube on one of the wonderful Viking longships is worth it all by itself. But the opportunities to experience the areas through which we were passing has made lifetime memories, wonderful ones. Viking is absolutely wonderful at seamless movement from cruising to touring and back to cruising. We were able to see and do things with Viking that we would never have managed by ourselves, such as the 'just for Viking' concert of the largest pipe organ in the world at Passau. But were also free to 'do our own thing when we wanted, such as in Vienna, where we had been more than once. We did our own tour of favorite places, such as the Cafe Schwartzenberg, our favorite coffee house in Vienna. However, the joys of simply causing the river and watching new worlds go by tops my list. 8 days was the first consideration with the second being the area covered and town visited. EVERYTHING about the cruise was outstanding from the guy rowing the garbage to the bins, the service, entertainment and overall friendly and relaxing atmosphere. HOWEVER, the costly tour to Salzburg was a rip off. It took hours there and hours back. There was 1 restroom stop for multiple buses ... of several lines...and ONE bathroom! Additionally, we were dropped off on one side of town...which seemed to be normal...but returned to the same location...which was not normal. Thus travelling the same route twice! The lunch was nice but way too long and did not leave enough time to explore Salzburg or see the castle on the mountain. This was very disappointing. The food service was amazing and it was even more amazing when we toured the kitchen and realized what was produced in such a small space. We have recommended Viking to numerous friends and have some sailing now and others in 2018. We have warned them about optional tours and to check out just how much travel time to arrive and return is required. We took the post tour to Prague. Prague is beautiful and we will go back. However, the hotel Viking people were of little or no help. Our introduction to Prague was 20 minutes in the hot sun with a walk across the street, through a small shopping center and a point at the transportation stop. When we asked them questions we were told your ship should have covered that with you. We asked for a non-smoking room and were given a smoking room. When we complained we were told it WAS a non- smoking room...at which time...we handed them the ashtrays we found in the room. They put a can of air freshener in the room and did not offer to move us. We were very disappointed, but having faith in Viking, we are doing a pre-trip in November in Amsterdam before embarking on our Amsterdam to Basel cruise. The first cruise we were 4 in our party, there are now 6 in our party. Read Less

This was the first cruise for my husband and my first on a river cruise. He was most pleasantly surprised on how much room there was on the boat and in the cabin. Additionally, he was worried that he could not keep up with the pace of activities or enjoy the volume of food offered in the dining spaces. Rather both were not issues. In fact, he added two optional programs at the desk and enjoyed all of them. The guides were informative, the pace was great and there was always time to visit on your own in the different cities. They were also helpful if someone forgot their headphones or needed directions to a particular store or site to visit. (Actually a time for Schnecken and Caffe, per Viennese custom.) We both enjoyed the food and programs on the boat as well, with the Program Director giving information about each stop and suggestions for places to visit when in the cities. I have cruised before, but this was one of the best as far as friendliness from the staff and the other passengers. Not being assigned to a particular table allowed for more integration with passengers, whether at meals or on the buses. Overall, we have spoken very highly of our cruise experience with Viking and look forward to traveling with you again. Read Less

All entertainment on the ship and on land were fantastic. The food every night was worth looking forward to. everything was well thought out and prepared perfectly. The breakfast each morning was worth starting our day with. It was freshly purchased and prepared to our order or we could go up to the buffet. Previous cruise was the Rhine. The Viking experience on that cruise led us to book the Danube. Once again, Viking provided exceptional food and cultural and historical perspectives and experiences. On board service was, as usual, without peer. A short time with Viking and the passengers and crew become a family. The shore guides were extremely knowledgeable and accomodating. Their walking lectures gave thorough insight into the unique people, their historical culture and the evolution to today's modern social and political environment. Additional tours were of high value. Onboard lectures were extremely interesting and enhanced one's knowledge of each area, its cultures, and its history. The late fall cruise provided moderate temperatures, only one morning of light rain, and spectacular foliage. Viking provided a good mix of escorted tour time, on shore leisure time, optional shore tours, coupled with daylight cruise times during the most interesting portions of the river. We will be on Viking again in November 2017. Read Less

Excellent guides, optional tours, service, and crew members. Kudos to the chef and staff who prepared a beautiful selection of gourmet meals which depicted the local cuisine. In addition, we were served beers and wines from each country we visited. We also chose to take the option of spending three additional days in Prague before the cruise. The ground Viking staff were so informative and accommodating...an aded plus for the company. They met us at the airport, transferred to our five star hotel, and had our room ready. The young people represented Viking with professional acumen, always available for us. We definitely will not hesitate to take another Viking tour. Wife chose the cruise from her travel "bucket list", we went as part of a group of active senior citizens. Viking Tor was an immaculate vessel staffed with an excellent Captain, crew, and attendants. Food rivaled the best restaurants - not a complaint from any of our 30-person party - staterooms were immaculately kept and very comfortable. We had a balcony cabin on the lower level and enjoyed the view from our location. The crew and staff were a cosmopolitan group with intimate knowledge of the ports and excursions we visited - many of them were native to the countries/cities. We have no doubt that we'd travel Viking again. I studied marine engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy and spent several months on each of four "Big Name" ships as part of the officer group. If There was anything out of order on this cruise (Even though it was a bit fragmented by the need to go to drydock for an unforseen repair), I'd know it. Read Less

We selected this cruise to celebrate many milestones in our life. After reviewing many choices, our local travel agent was very helpful in assisting us to pick the option that "crusied" from Berlin to Budapest. We opted for a 3 day pre-excursion to Prague and a two day post-excursion in Budapest. The accommodations were superior. In Prague we arranged for independent tours the first two days as the communication about the Viking tours was not stellar. However on the third day we were able to join an event that was planned for a group just finishing their cruise. The Viking staff in Prague was amazing and the hotel was superior. We then traveled by train to Berlin, with a Viking representative traveling with us. The cruise we purchased originated in Berlin (2 days) and then traveled to Dresden (2 days), not on the Danube, but was just an amazing experience. For this part of the cruise we traveled with a Viking representative (Alec-wonderful, knowledgeable young man) and chauffeur, George. There were only 3 other couples who had purchased this leg of the cruise, so eight of us (plus Alec and George!) were treated in grand fashion. Tours of this very interesting part of Germany, meals together with new found friends and bike riding along the Elbe are some of the most memorable moments of this vacation. Basic tours of the cities were included as well as breakfast in the luxury hotels. Other meals and extra tours were on your own. We embarked on the vessel in Nuremburg on day 8 of our vacation to travel the Danube. The cabin was lovely. We purchased one with a veranda, which I enjoyed, but probably not necessary as the vessel is not huge and the sun deck was always accessible and most days were spent off ship. Sailing down the Danube lived up to my high expectations. Basic tours of all ports with local, knowledgeable and friendly guides were included in the cruise and most days additional excursions could be purchased. As we were interested in "seeing it all" we usually participated in these extra excursions. Some were worth it, some maybe not. We docked in Budapest the day before their national holiday of St. Stephen's Day. I was very happy that we elected to do a post-excursion. The city was alive with activity! We participated in the Folklore Festival, the likes of which I have never seen--food and craft vendors lined the streets all the way up to the castle with entertainment along the way. The evening, our last on vacation, ended with the most amazing fireworks display along the river which we were able to enjoy from the hotel terrace. The service on the ship was fantastic, friendly and entertaining. By walking and exploring the ports, first with a guide and then on your own, we feel we made the most of this experience. Every day we were up and out early with our sturdy walking shoes on and camera in hand, returning to the ship for dinner and conversation with new found friends. Of course there were places we wish we could have stayed to explore longer and some that required a bus ride to get to, but all in all in was an amazing adventure. Another Viking cruise to a new location is somewhere in our future. Read Less

We arrived in Berlin two days early and were able to get rooms at the Hilton Berlin where the Viking Tour started. I think it is the best hotel in Berlin given its location and how nice it is. I was not excited about taking city tours, but Viking proved my hesitation wrong. I went with my parents and 22 year old daughter and we had a blast on every tour! I was very happy with the selection of cities we visited and the only thing I would change would be to spend more time in Budapest. There is so much to see and we really only got one day to fit it all in. Next time! The boat was great. It was clean, easy to navigate and well dressed. The crew was fantastic at every level. The bartenders, waiters, concierge, literally every crew member was friendly, eager to help and just plain fun to hang out with. If I could have that exact same crew the next time I go I would! The food was excellent. Sooooooo good! Every meal was delicious and the use of local cuisine made each meal unique. The choices at the bar were great, no cheap drinks! The silver plan is a must! Overall, the experience was far beyond what I thought it would be. I have recommended Viking to many friends already and will be a customer again. Thanks for making this trip everything it could be! My mother who is 86 years old, has been wanting to go on a Viking River cruise for years. I received an email from Viking about two discounted cruises, one of which was on the Danube. My mother has always wanted to see Budapest and Vienna. When I told her about the Viking Cruise, the great price, and that I would go with her on the cruise, she was elated. We chose to take the extended stay in Budapest prior to the cruising date. We both agreed that this was the best thing that we have ever done together. Budapest was more than we ever expected. Viking arranged our stay at the Budapest Marriott, which is located directly on the Danube. We had an unbelievable view of the Danube and the Palace across the river, that was lighted every night. Viking offered us optional guided tours of Budapest each day that we did purchase at a minimal cost. The Marriott Hotel was excellently appointed the staff was pleasant and helpful. A complete buffet breakfast was included for each day that we stayed. This cruise was a dream come true for my mother, we loved every experience; from the extended stay in Budapest to the exciting tours in Vienna. On board, we enjoyed the Viking room accommodations; the excellent meals; the wine and music provided every evening; the friendly Viking staff; and last but not least the wonderful friends that we made on the cruise. This was our very first cruise, and I had always wanted to visit Budapest, the birthplace of both sets of my grandparents. Everything about the cruise was wonderful- delicious food, informative tours, excellent staff, comfortable amenities, easy connections and transfers, and enjoyable entertainment! We arrived early in Budapest to extend our stay in the city before checking in to the ship, all part of our Viking experience. We stayed at the Budapest Marriott which was also excellent in every way- very convenient for walking and exploring the city, delicious breakfasts, and very comfortable accommodations. By the second day on the boat, we agreed we will be doing this type of cruise again. Since our return we booked another Viking river cruise for later next year! The experience was perfect for us- small number of passengers, personalized service, culturally oriented, and flexibility to go off and do what we like to do like exploring by bicycle, hiking, etc. We are very active 60+ year olds and we were as busy as we wanted to be. The Viking River Cruises would suit all ages. We are very excited for our next cruise! Read Less

This was our first cruise and, although I don't have another experience to compare it to, it was a wonderful experience. This cruise line really knows what it's doing from start to finish. We booked air through Viking which was a great price and they timed everything up better than I ever could on my own. We had a pretty good idea of the places we wanted to see but tossed around the cruise line to pick going through about 3 brochures. Viking just stood out and it did not disappoint! We chose the Danube River Cruise because of the cities visited and length of the cruise (our first time river cruise). We booked everything through Viking and did not have to worry about transportation connections. They were there to meet us upon our arrival. The cruise was everything that we hoped for. Beautiful ancient European cities, scenic landscapes, OUTSTANDING FOOD AND SERVICE on ship, comfortable room and smooth river ride. Make sure your on the top lounge deck passing through the Wachau Valley. The regular shore excursions were perfect. I would recommend booking two, not more than three additional excursions. I especially enjoyed the separate boat ride down the Danube narrows to the Abbey. Don't overeat on ship, because you will want to have room to enjoy the local specialties as well. Make sure you visit the old sausage shop and enjoy the local beer. Take a lot of pictures, but don't worry if you miss some. Viking sells a thumb drive of pictures taken through out you trip at a reasonable price. Upon my return, I created a photo book of over 65 pictures (I took 170). I had my photo taken in Budapest enhanced to 16 X 20, framed and matted. Since it was our anniversary, Viking gave us a quality bottle of champagne. We are currently planning our 2017 trip with Viking and can't await our new adventure. Read Less
