This was our fifth Viking river cruise and they just keep getting better and better!!! We started our trip with the pre-extension in Paris. The hotel was lovely and we saw the major sights in Paris. The highlights of the Seine River were going to Normandy and to Giverny to see the Monet Foundation. They were both extraordinary days. We took a train from Paris to Lyon with Viking to start the second half of our trip on the Rhone River. We especially liked the painted walls in Lyon. The wine country, Vienne, and Arles were all beautiful. We especially enjoyed the steam train in Tournon and the Pope's Palace in Avignon. We always meet nice people on our trips and they make the trip extra special. The food was delicious and our balcony room was comfortable. Doing the back to back river cruises was a great way of seeing many of the highlights in France. We highly recommend France's Finest!!! Read Less

We took two teenage grandsons with us, and that was when they could go. We took the cruise as a high school graduation present for the 18 year old one and took the 14 year old one too. All 4 of us had a great time, and the cruise met and exceeded our expectations. We thought the food, service by the wait staff and presentation of the food was outstanding. The shore excursions and the talks before them were great. Those talks prepared us well for the excursions. We all learned quite a bit about the places we visited. Since the cruise was primarily for the boys, not knowing whether they would ever get back to Paris, the Normandy beaches and the wonderful towns on the Seine, they will have lasting memories of the places we visited and have the desire to return to France at a later date. Those were our primary purposes of the cruise, and the were fulfilled. Read Less

The Rinda trip from Paris to Normandy was spectacular. I loved the port stops in Vernon/Giverny, Rouen and Les Andelys. The ship was gorgeous, the food was amazing and the crew were a delight. A couple of suggestions: 1. The “Silver Spirits” bar package was well worth the $300 per cabin. Not that we were barflies, but it entitles you to almost any wine off their wine list. The house wines included with lunch and dinner were fine, but they had some really great ones on the list. 2. Be aware that the ship docks in Le Pecq, a suburb, and not Paris proper. If you want to go into the city on embarkation day, you can get there for less than 5 euros on the RER train. The St Germain en Leye station on the A1 line is close and stops in the heart of the city is close but it is a steep climb The included tour to Giverny is a bit rushed, while you have more time than you need. You might want to consider getting a cab to stay longer. The crowd does tend to skew older, although we did have some intergenerational groups. I am happy to answer any questions. Read Less

We were delighted with our Viking River Cruise - Paris and the Heart of Normandy. This allowed us to see the City of Lights, Monet’s Garden in Giverny, Rouen, the D-Day Beaches and other Normandy sites. Everything in our experience was superior! Our accommodations onboard were first class, comfortable and relaxing. Our tours were led by excellent, informative, and entertaining guides, who cleared the way, so we did not have to stand in line. The food was divine and was different every night. I have a gluten allergy, and I could find numerous options at every meal. I told Viking prior to my trip, and they arranged gluten-free meals on our shore excursions. We also do not drink alcohol and also told Viking prior to our trip. As a result, waiters always had sparkling water and diet Cokes ready for us at our meals. This was very thoughtful because wine come with the meals and we appreciated not having to ask repeatedly for non-alcoholic drinks. Such is the top quality service. Every staff member was there to help, was polite and went the extra mile. At Dinner, the Maitre’d stopped by each night to make sure our meal was just right. About the food: excellent! Every night features several regional specialties, but also served each night is a steak, chicken and seafood dish if the regional specialty is not your thing. There is a full buffet at breakfast and lunch. The cruise makes sure you have meal service if you have an early tour. Breakfast is served extra early on the day of departure. Make friends early in the trip, so you will have dinner companions. Dinner tables seat six to eight. There are no tables for two. About the tours:comprehensive and challenging. We paid for the optional shore excursions several times and it was worth the extra cost. We spent almost a full day in Paris seeing the sites, concluding with a tour of Notre Dame. This day also included lunch at a charming French Bistro. Our group was small, so our tour was almost a private one. On another tour of Paris, we stormed the Lovre in an intensive three hour minute tour. We saw all the famous works of art, including the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Our guide was charming and very knowledgeable. But it was a bit of a challenge with much fast walking and many stairs. Included with the cruise was a tour of artist Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny. Excellent planning meant we skipped the line and arrived before the crowd. We wished we had more time in the garden: our only regret was that we didn’t slow down amid the beauty. We loved the trip to Rouen Cathedral, which Monet painted numerous times, and the city of Rouen, where we enjoyed a leisurely cafe at a small restaurant. We travelled nearly two hours by luxury motorcoach to the D-Day beaches. We spent a good deal of time at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. We got to participate in a short, but moving memorial service held just for our tour group. My husband is a WWII buff, and he thought we could have spent more time at the beaches. Viking offered numerous tours each day, providing many choices. You would have a great time just with the provided tours, skipping the extra cost tours. All of our tours fascinated us and we were excited to learn new things. I will say that all the tours require a good bit of walking. All tours are marked as easy, moderate or demanding. My husband climbed a high hill to visit Richard the Lionheart’s castle. This was a demanding tour. The all-day Paris tour was easy to moderate. All my tours were easy, but I was walking ALOT! Onboard, we enjoyed a painting class and an art history session. We really enjoyed the coffee stations offering cappuccinos , fresh cookies or madeleines and and “bubbly” water 24/7. The WiFi worked well. All in all, we decided this was the best trip in our lives. It was perfect for us, and we highly recommend it. Read Less

Viking was recommended by our travel agent. We had never been to France and liked the cruise/tour options. The food and service was excellent. The tour guides were bilingual and very knowledgeable, We particularly enjoyed the drive to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery. The tour guide was very well versed about the area, the history and agricultural practices. Although beer and wine was included for lunch and dinner, we opted for the Silver Beverage package. It was well worth it as we had more "adult" beverage options and weren't limited to meal times or happy hours. We enjoyed the free time on board as well as when we were in port. We were given the opportunity to explore the towns on our own. The tour groups were a good size and the listening devices were very helpful. We are looking forward to our next great experience with Viking we hope in 2019. Read Less

This was our second River Cruise with Viking, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. As you may know, River ships are much smaller than ocean going vessels, and so they might not have as many amenities as some people might like. For example, there is no casino or big theater for shows. There are not multiple dining rooms. However, the ship is very comfortable and cozy, and it’s easy to meet people! The dining room is very nice with good views all around. The food was quite good at all meals, and the service was great. Our stateroom was a bedroom, bath, and small sitting area with small balcony. We were super comfortable. Our room was always kept clean and neat in a very timely manner. Storage space is somewhat limited, so don’t overpack! You don’t really need to, anyway, as the dress code is mostly casual. No formal wear required! (Thank goodness!) The included shore excursions were informative and enjoyable. Viking makes sure you don’t miss any highlights. If you chose to pay extra for a special excursion, you will get your money’s worth! The tour guides are very professional, speak excellent English, and really know their stuff! We actually extended our cruise by taking a 3-day tour of the Loire Valley. We saw great countryside, toured cities, cathedrals, and a winery. We even stayed in a French chateau. Excellent tour! The Viking staff were all friendly, knowledgeable, and professional you can’t beat the service they provide. It is true you may pay more for a Viking cruise, but we think it is travel money well spent. Read Less

This was our second Viking cruise. The first was from Switzerland to Amsterdam a few years ago, and it was wonderful in all respects. The Paris to Normandy cruise was not as good. No issue with the room, which was nice and well maintained (except for difficulty flushing the toilet). The onboard entertainment was sparse but of good quality, the ports of call were interesting, and the excursions also were fine and well run. However, the ambiance on the ship was bland, the staff was not particularly ingratiating, and the food was certainly nothing special. Nothing was dramatically bad, but it was not particularly welcoming or positive, and certainly not up to the standard set on our prior cruise. Now that we are a few months removed from the cruise, I realize that it just was bland and not exciting, although Normandy was moving and the excursions along the way were enjoyable. We also extended the trip in Paris, and truly enjoyed those extra days and the city. Read Less

Invited by friends to join them on a Viking River cruise from Paris to Normandy, we happily signed on. Not only was this our first trip to Europe, it was our first river cruise. From the moment we set foot on the Rinda, we knew this was going to be a fabulous experience. We were right. The stateroom was exceptionally well appointed with the most important factor, a comfortable bed, meeting the highest standards. Every member of the staff from Captain to stewards were professional, attentive, and personable. The food rivaled that of the city, and the complementary house wines very good. The low-key entertainment, particularly the opera duo, exceeded expectation. Having previously taken only ocean cruises, I was particularly charmed by the intimacy of the ship and the personal attention of the staff. Every excursion was exceptional. The "big" venues, Versailles, Giverny, etc., were as magnificent as expected, but to my surprise, equally enjoyable were the less well-known places we visited, e.g., Malmason, Les Andelys. Of particular note is that every one of the tour guides resides in the area they showed, and their love of their hometown was evident and engaging. Given the opportunity, would I another Viking River Cruise? I resounding, "Yes!" Read Less

Everything about Viking River Cruises is top-notch. The vessels are so very clean, the sailing is smooth and efficient, the meals are delicious, the wines are regional as are the beers served on board. The staterooms can be small, but we were only in them to sleep. Viking offers daily tours in each port with guides who present local history to satisfaction. We have sailed on two Viking river cruises and have booked our third. There are always cookies along with coffee or tea for guests anytime of the day at the entrance to the lounge. The selection changes daily. Each stateroom has a refrigerator which is nice. The heated bathroom floors in each stateroom is a lovely feature along with lighting at night for safety. The top deck provides a padded walking route along with chairs, loungers and umbrellas for shade. Shuffleboard courts are available on some of the vessels. Read Less

This trip was amazing from the start. We were met by Viking representatives that had a desk at the airport. We were driven from the airport to the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel. We had no idea that it would be so far from the airport. We had initially considered finding a cheaper hotel and seeing Paris on our own. We so glad that we decided to book the 3-day pre-cruise in Paris. It gave us the opportunity to rest after the long flight from the west coast. We also had the opportunity to visit top visitor attractions in Paris that other cruisers saw only on a bus tour. The hotel was close to the Opera House and many visitor attractions. But the best part of the trip is that we got to meet other Viking cruisers at the hotel and quickly became friends. We visited Notre Dame, the Louve, Musee D'Orsay, the Eifel Tower, and had the opportunity to use the Paris Metro transportation system with our new friends. Viking had a desk in the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel and the pre-tour excursions and neighbor walk was well done. The hotel's buffet breakfast was great. We found Paris' attractions to be very crowded, although we were traveled during an off season. We especially enjoyed Viking's itinerary and being able to see places off of the beaten track: Giverney and Monet's Garden, Roeun and it's spired cathedrals, Normandy, and La Roche-Guyon with its amazing castle built next to a cliff and 300 spiraling steps that lead UP to the dungeons at the top. I could have stayed at Monet's Garden all day! The history of D-Day and Normandy lead us to do a lot of reading about WWII when we returned and gave us a greater appreciation of the ingenuity to build artificial harbors in England for the 5 Normandy beaches and the courage of our US and allied soldiers. We had previously gone on a Holland America cruise, but preferred the more intimate Viking river cruise experience with a maximum of 190 cruisers. The food and the service were superb. The chefs were very accommodating when there were special diet requirements. Throughout the trip, we liked the portable audio device that allowed us to hear the local guides clearly. We also liked that we were broken into smaller groups and that there were several guides. It was nice that daily excursions were included in the cruise price. Some of the excursions required us to get up early the next day so we didn't take advantage of the entertainment. We went only to one. The staff calls you by name. You are not a room number. Amazing! On the final day, a Viking agent accompanied us to the airport. We got to the airport 3 hours, 20 minutes before the departure time. It was like Disneyland with lines that snaked. We crept along one long line and that was followed by at least 3 additional long lines. We were so glad that a Viking agent was there to communicate with the French-speaking agent at the airport. We barely made it on to our flight. What made our trip especially memorable was meeting new friends. We hope that we can travel together on future Viking cruises. Everything was perfect and it this was one of our most memorable trips. Thank you Viking staff! Read Less

Viking provided everything needed for this trip from arranging the air transportation, greeting at the airport, transportation from airport to hotel, bus from hotel to ship, outstanding local tour guides, delicious food, courteous staff & Captain, room service, etc. We are looking forward to book another trip with Viking. The excursions were guided by local historians that really added extra information that only a local resident would know. Each excursion was accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and we had an earpiece to hear everything that was said. Umbrellas were provided by Viking that were red and very easy to identify so not to stray from your group. Bottled water was always available to take on your excursion and we were always met with a warm beverage upon return to the ship. The food was all local flavors and the chef would purchase local food items at each port to prepare for the guests. The menu had so much to choose from including a simple burger to filet or fish. The servers were sensitive to the allergy needs of all guests. I loved the detail that was given to us and would highly recommend Viking. Read Less

This was our 2nd Viking cruise and we are planning our 3rd Viking cruise. We wanted to go the Beaches of Normandy and this Viking cruise took us there. We went with friends that was on our previous Viking cruise which was going down the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basil. The service is the best. They have a very well planned itinerary for each day. Each day there was a shore excursion walking tour which was lead by a local guide. The meals were great and the service was exceptional. The waiters were always there for service. Really like that Viking meets you at the airport and gets you to the cruise departure. Even more importantly is Viking takes you back to the airport. This was so much helpful. The Paris airport is like a city in itself. A Viking representative took to all the station we had to go to finally get to the airline checkin counter. Next up planning a Mediterranean cruise. We were so pleasantly surprised when we boarded the ship (in Le Pecq). The crew was so friendly and helpful. The accommodations and food were even better than we expected. Our Viking excursions were informative and entertaining. The history, art and food of France were wonderful. Our highlights were Monet's home, the Musee d'Orsay, the left bank, the bistros, the cabaret (a Viking add-in). We were in Rouen on market day which was fabulous. Our trip to Omaha Beach was interesting and sobering. Overall, this trip exceed our expectations and a big reason is due to the quality of the Viking experience. We had wanted to visit France years ago, but didn’t speak French and felt it was asking a lot to expect the French to know English. We retired a few years ago, and decided to visit the country anyway. We thought it best to go with a proven leader in the travel industry, and my sister had recommended Viking as she had enjoyed a Viking Cruise from Holland to Hungary. We made our reservations and then learned that my sister and 3 of her friends from Minnesota were on the same cruise (14 days in France). We had a fabulous time! Sometimes we were on the same excursions; other days, we had different experiences, but had the opportunity to share what we had experienced over a delicious dinner. We so enjoyed the leadership on the ship, as well as the staff who waited on us at dinner. We enjoyed the happy hours prior to dinner, when we learned about the next day’s activities. The evening entertainment was fun, and we enjoyed the special cooking demonstration, the French lesson, etc. As my husband needed to be in contact with research colleagues in the U.S., we were happy with the internet connection onboard. Each included tour at the different towns we docked at were led by very knowledgeable locals. The tour guides gave us the history of each of the French villages we visited as we walked along seeing the sites that the guides described. The ship itself was the perfect size, less than 200 passengers which made it easy to meet new friends and dinner mates. The food at each meal was so tasty and presented like a true first class restaurant. The service at meal time was amazing! We took this cruise to attack our "bucket list" and found it to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of our lives. Not only did we tour some of the most evocative sights in France, but we were treated exceptionally well by arguably the most capable and entertaining crew imaginable. They truly made this cruise one for the books! The cruise director, chef, and other staff made the port briefings and subsequent evening dining a highlight and not merely the dissemination of information and provision of outstanding menu items. This is our third Viking cruise, and while they all have their own personalities, it is the interaction of the crew that will provided us with some of our more endearing memories. The excursions were exceptional as well, again because the staff worked so well together. We did the Viking Rhine cruise last year and wanted to see Paris & the Normandy excursion seemed to fit our needs this year. As usual, our cabin was nice & they kept it that way as well as the whole ship. We found the staff extremely helpful & competent & all went out of their way to make us comfortable. The food was outstanding, the wines were good and the entertainment was very nice. Our shore excursions were just right and the guides were extremely knowledgeable & helpful. Our only complaint was the bed covering was a combination bed spread, sheet & blanket. It became too hot in the middle of the night, yet your only option was to throw if off & then it became too cool. A sheet would help, but at least have a light blanket in the closet that could be used to compensate for this poor design. Also, our tour guide to Versailles apparently lost his ticket and we were sidelined for about 30 minutes while he tried to telephone for a replacement. In the mean-time, about 3000 other people poured into the place while we just stayed out of their way. Other than that incident, he was quite competent. Read Less

The ship is gorgeoous; our veranda suite was the perfect mix of personal space and outdoor space- we spend a lot of time on the veranda just watching boats and scenery and enjoying the quiet. The food was extraordinary and very French.... every meal was delicious. We decided to take a Viking River Cruise just because it looked like a good thing to try for our first trip abroad. And we were not disappointed! Starting with our flight. We chose the round trip air option from Viking on Air France, great airline. We were met on our arrival in Paris by Viking representatives and taken by motor coach to our ship The Viking Rinda, the ship was just beautiful. We were greeted graciously and checked in, then explored the ship a little and by the time we got to our very nicely appointed Veranda (B) cabin on the main deck our luggage was already there. Dining aboard the ship was an delightful experience. We looked forward to every meal on board ship. The entertainment and activities provided on board made us feel included with all that was going on. Our ports were very convenient and shore excursions were both beautiful and educational. Now about the crew... From the Captain to the deck hands, What a ride, smooth and comfortable. From The Head Chef to the waiters, food and drink we could not have enjoyed more. From the Program Director to the tour guides, knowledgeable and well coordinated. And from the Hotel Manager to the cabin attendants, very accommodating and attentive. We would like to say that the entire crew were courteous, hard working and eager to meet all our needs. None of our request went unanswered or unfulfilled. Would we go again? We were definitely surprised with how easy Viking made everything . . . met us at the airport, all the shuttle services, dropped us at the airport, walked us to our check-in line, dealt with our air reservations . . . this is the easiest vacation ever planned! The crew was knowledgeable, helpful, attentive, and hilarious! Loved this crew - what chemistry! The food was beyond my expectations, not only the buffet but the ability to order off a menu . . . the chef took all likes, dislikes, allergies, gastro issues in to account. The food and wine was abundant and delicious. The rooms were clean, well-designed, the bed and pillows were so comfortable! Plenty of room to unpack and relax. Our only issue was that we booked for a cabin of 205sf, upon measuring (even including the veranda, closet, bathroom - wall to wall to water), the room did not measure - about 30sf short. Another guest who had a smaller room had done the same and said they were about 30sf short. Did ask how they measure, never received an answer, even from customer service when we returned. That being said, we are booked for another Viking cruise in May 2018. Cannot wait! Read Less

We were a party of eight traveling with our family and friends. Our special pleasure was traveling with our eighteen and fourteen-year-old granddaughters that made our trip so wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the beauty of Paris and how wonderfully we were treated by the French people. The excursions to the towns and beaches of Normandy were so moving, we really appreciated what our soldiers as well as the allies did to stop Hitler's tyranny in Europe. Our visit to Giverny and Monet's Garden was much more than we ever expected, living pictures of what we have seen on his canvas. The ship was beautiful, the crew could not be more accommodating, especially the husband and wife team who were the Executive Chef and Maîtres d'.
