This was our tenth river cruise, our seventh with Viking. We chose this cruise as we had not sailed east of Budapest previously. We visited new countries and learned about life behind the Iron Curtain. As usual the service was great onboard the longship. Our cabin was a veranda stateroom. We took advantage of the veranda to watch the lights of Budapest as we set sail long after dark. These views were among the cruise highlights. Another highlight was the home visit in Croatia where we learned of her hardships during the fighting with Serbia. We visited many beautiful orthodox churches. This trip incorporated more "country life" than others that concentrated more on the bigger cities. We visited small villages as well as an equestrian center. Our only problems came at the hotel in Bucharest for our final night. Eventually things got squared away but the service did not match that onboard the Viking Jarl. Read Less

We took an Olivia Cruise and tour with the Viking cruise lines and had a great time. Great activities and tour guides were awesome. Not only was the personal guide that stayed with us the entire trip and the local guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. The shore excursions were with the local guides were really well organized. Excellent service at airport transfers and the hotel were fabulous. This was one of the best tours that I have ever taken. The scenery is spectacular and the history is unbelievable. It is the only way to see China. Favorites sites we saw were the Forbidden City, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Bund at Shanghai, the caves of Guilin, and the Giant Pandas at the zoo in ChongGong. A special feature of this tour was the visit to the elementary school and having the ability to interact with the children in a first grade class. Read Less

We took the trip with a group from an American university so we looked forward to spending time with the people with whom we were traveling and hadn't given much thought about being on a Viking cruise. However, the experience with Viking was excellent and much better than we anticipated. In starting our trip before the cruise, the hotels in Berlin and Dresden were both excellent quality and our land tour guide was one of the best that we've met. He was knowledgeable, very personable, and just became part of our group which was great! The onboard accommodations were very comfortable, the food was excellent and the guides hired by Viking for the daily excursions were quite knowledgeable. We enjoyed meeting so many different people onboard and sharing the daily shore excursions with them. We learned a lot about the places visited, people from other parts of the world and had an extremely good time! Read Less

Wine flowed freely at all times. Everything on the ship was wonderful and loved it! Shore excursions were interesting and didn't feel the need to pay for extra excursions. Cabin was very comfortable and more spacious than expected. Would like to see more recreation facilities on board. Small gym or workout space. Our complaints are with Viking when you're not on the ship. Viking Air service is horrible. Impossible to talk to them. Really fell down on that part. Read the marketing stuff carefully - not exactly untrue, but doesn't give the full details either. And Viking needs to quit the stupid practice of publishing their rates as double and then saying 2 for 1. It's dumb and insulting. Read Less

The itinerary. We loved the historical stops and the fact that it was a small ship going down a river. The service was wonderful, the staff made you feel you were the only guests on the ship. Loved the headsets so you could hear the guide without a problem. Loved that every day we arrived back from the excursion there was a little appetizer or drink when you boarded the ship again. Loved the food and free wine and beer. We sat on the top deck daily and watched the beautiful scenery as we cruised down the river. The staff actually provided blankets to wrap in on the colder days. Everything was top of the line. When people asked us to name something we didn't like, we couldn't come up with anything. We are excited to go on our next Viking cruise within the next two years. Thank you for a fabulous experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of its destination itinerary. Budapest was a great city in which to begin. We flew into Budapest a couple of days early in order to explore on our own. Our ship was easily accessed from our hotel. Boarding was quite simple and the the staff was both welcoming and accomodating. Our cabin was really nice, especially the heated floor in the bathroom. Each day there was a new bottle of water in our stateroom and upon leaving the ship each day, bottles of water were available for each of us at the exit. The shore excursions were very good and plenty of time was allowed for us to go around on our own. Guides met the ship and since we were assigned our tour group ahead of time, there were no problems getting where we needed to be. We had the option to eat in the city or go back on board for lunch in most places. Dining was a great experience! The food was excellent and there were always a number of options from which to choose. The serving staff was the friendliest we have ever encountered. They were eager to please and always helpful, but more than that, they were a lot of fun! We are looking forward to planning another cruise with Viking River Cruises. Read Less

This was our first, but will definitely not be our last, Viking cruise! The service was unparalleled, the crew was friendly and more that willing to take care of any request. The ship was beautiful and very comfortable. The food was beyond compare, with a wide variety of dishes, often local to the area we were cruising through. The included beer and wine during meals was a real treat, which is quite different than most cruise lines. The tours included were very enjoyable. Every tour guide was friendly and well informed, and the small personal receivers worn during the tours made it easy to hear what the guides were saying, no matter where we wandered. The top deck turned out to be one of our favorite places to hang out, enjoying a beer or coffee, while enjoying the beautiful scenery on the Danube. It was one of the best travel experiences we have ever had, we look forward to cruising with Viking in the future! Read Less

Our British host was funny and charming. The food was outstanding. All the cruise attendants were friendly, helpful and went the distance to be sure we had a great time. The extra tours were also well worth it. We had a back stage guided tour of the Vienna museum by the most knowledgeable docent who had been guiding for 20 years. One of a kind tour. The two abbey tours were also most interesting and we were delighted that some of our tour dollars were going towards their restoration. My husband really enjoyed all the locks we went through, and there were a lot. So not just pretty scenery; good infrastructure/engineering fun as well. Great food, we were well taken care of, knowledgable tour guides for all of the cities we visited. Viking is a well organized tour company. Nothing was left to chance. There were multiple opportunities on the tour to take additional on shore excursions and all of the ones we took were excellent. I especially liked the WW II extended tour of Nuremberg, Germany. We visited the famous parade grounds and went into the education facility that discussed the history leading up to the rise of Germany's declaration of war in Europe. Incredibly informative. On board the ship each evening we were given a summary of the next day's events so that we were prepared and knew what to expect. The busses came on time and we were able to visit all of the places we were promissed. All of the tour guides were top notch and knew what they were talking about. I can not speak highly enough about our Viking river experience. Read Less

We met some wonderful people on board and still keep in touch with them. The tour guides were a fountain of information and having the headsets helped a lot because my husband walks a little slow at 86. We also did our air fare with Viking and also our insurance that gave me piece of mind. We did not spend a night prior to the cruise in Budapest and I will the next time,we did at the end of our trip in Nuremberg spent three night in Prague which we loved. Last year we did spent two nights in Lucerne and two more night in Amsterdam before flying home at the end of our cruise just wonderful. My husband wants to do the river trip in Russia also. On both of our cruises we had the same cabin 312 AA suite wow I loved everything about it. My husband needed a wheel chair at every stop in the airports and someone was always waiting for us. We also had transportation included the Viking Staff was so very helpful with everything we needed. Can't wait to go again. Read Less

The Christmas Cruise on the Danube was probably the most incredible cruise I have ever taken. The all inclusive nature of the cruise, the marvelous land tours, and all this coupled with the natural beauty of the cities visited made the experience one that I will never forget. Kudos to everyone at Viking, from the reservation specialists to the crew aboard the boat. they were totally knowledgeable, professional, and helpful every step of the journey. The food was exceptional, especially to be noted are the "local" favorites served as we entered each port of call. The wines, especially the regional varieties were superb, and the service in the dining room was always excellent. there was nothing that they couldn't and wouldn't do to make every meal a memorable dining experience. The land tours were totally and expertly prepared and designed for every one of the passengers. The guides were each a fountain of knowledge, with considerable expertise about every place that we visited. The churches were spectacular and the architecture was a perfect example of the history of architecture through the centuries. And when we were back on board, the views as we cruised down the Danube were wonderful. the shores are lined with some of the most beautiful sights you could ever hope to see from the deck of your ship. In conclusion, the viking river Cruise on the Danube is an experience that I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience. If I could give advice to the readers of this review, it would be to plan your king cruise as soon as you can. Read Less

We needed to be in Budapest for Christmas and this was an opportunity to experience a possible White Christmas plus we always wanted to experience Christmas Markets. The service on the Jarl was exceptional, staff went out of their way without any problems to accommodate our dietary needs. We liked the fact that we had a Premium Alcohol Package and tips included. Shore excursions were imoressive and we got a chance to stroll through some of the Christmas Markets. We had a balcony cabin on the top deck, could not hear the neighbours and cabin was excellent. Like where the crew replenished body wash regularly and we necpver had to ask for anything, was a pleasure to chat to staff. Good was excellent, the Maitre D went beyond the call of duty to locate us each day to discuss our dietary needs for the day. It seemed no problem with our menu, the food was excellent. Enjoyed the activities where the pastry cook made Apple Strudel in the lounge. The tour of the galley was impressive as we realised how small it was to serve 250 people. Another pleasing aspect of the activities was bringing on board local people. to show and play their instruments, traditional dancing and singing but the highlight was the young school children from Budapest who along with their parents came onboard and sang both English and Hungarian carols, brought the house down and it was a pleasure to see the parents on board In all, an excellent river cruise. We travelled as a couple and arrived the day before the cruise to explore Budapest a little more before embarkation. The instructions to get to the port were perfect and we had no issues arriving or boarding the ship. The entire cruise went seamlessly. From the moment we boarded until the bus dropped us off at the airport. We had heard the service was great, but we weren't expecting this high level of service. The ship was great, the staterooms larger than expected and kept immaculately clean and stocked each day. We were concerned about motion sickness, especially through the locks but didn't feel a thing it moved so smoothly. The food is something we still dream about.... regularly. It was out of this world and we're excited for our next cruise to have the chance to taste the culinary skills of the kitchen staff again! Every lunch and dinner there was something different to try, as well as a menu of staple meals to fall back on should you want, and many meals offered options that allowed you to sample some of the local fare. The tours were fantastic and the guides incredibly knowledgeable. We like to venture out on our own and were able to do so if we decided to leave a city tour and explore (the obvious exception would be the tours that take you farther away from the ports or those occasional afternoons when the ship is moving to another port). There was absolutely nothing that needed improvement. It was a memorable and fantastic luxury experience and we're already booked on another! Read Less

As someone who usually travels at a fast pace, I was amazed at how much I loved my Viking cruise! Travelling along the Danube River and waking up to a different view each morning was a mode of travel I could very much get used to. From the moment you step onto the ship, are offered a welcome drink and taken to your luxurious room...it begins. Friendly service from staff who are never too busy to help and the feeling you aren't in a hotel but a floating home where all the comforts are yours to enjoy. The cabin is beautifully appointed with dream beds, a library of movies to watch at your leisure and my favourite part, a bathroom with heated flooring! Returning from a long day exploring in the cold winter temperatures, having heated flooring felt like a private spa experience. Each night the dining options were above and beyond my expectations. Three course meals as the lights from small towns sparkled outside the window, and then there was the Bavarian Feast, what a spectacle! The ports and shore excursions went off without a hitch, even in wet weather the timing was organised perfectly and the guides on each tour were informative and friendly. I highly recommend the wine tasting in Melk and also the history tour in Nuremberg! Overall the itinerary was scheduled to enjoy each destination to the fullest but also with enough time to relax on board Viking Jarl. Also just a quick mention to one of my favourite experiences of the trip...passing through the locks was incredible to witness. If you're taking a tour be sure to experience it from the outdoor deck but also from your cabin balcony so you can watch the walls pass by. Thanks to everyone who made it such an enjoyable and memorable experience! Read Less

We sailed on the Viking Jarl on November 29th. This was our second cruise with Viking this year. The itinerary was sightseeing and visiting the XMAS markets in Germany, Austria, and Budapest. We had a wonderful time. I was pleasantly surprised with the smaller venues that I was not familiar with- specifically Melk and Regensburg. Absolutely beautiful- especially at Christmas time! The excursions were well done. They covered a great deal of ground and the tour guides were all well informed and overall- excellent. The ship was tastefully designed and well maintained/clean. The staff worked very hard to make this a wonderful experience. The food was good- sometimes excellent. The dining staff worked together to ensure the food and wine flowed. The Program Director- Mario did an exceptional job. Some of the activities they planned for the Christmas Season were: • A chorus sang Christmas Carols after dinner in the lounge • Gingerbread demonstration in Passau Germany at Café Simon • Opera Singers that sang after dinner- includes tunes from the Sound of Music • Decorated Christmas ornaments and decorated a tree in the lounge area We extended for three nights in Prague. Prague was beautiful and Viking provided a lovely tour of the city. My only issue was here- The hotel- The Hilton- was not centrally located. It was at least a 15 minute walk into the square. In addition, a poker tournament was going on and at times in the evening it was very loud. Lastly, the hotel itself did not meet my standards. The carpets in the halls leading to the rooms were frayed in many spots. The lobby was stunning; however the rooms and halls need an update badly. Read Less

This was our first river cruise (we have done ocean cruises) and we absolutely loved it. A couple of days before we left home we received an e-mail that we would board the Viking Jarl instead of the Viking Atla and that low water levels might require a ship transfer. We didn't know this had been an ongoing problem for several months and fortunately I didn't read the negative reviews of this situation before we left. As it turned out, it rained several days before our cruise and the water levels rose so that we completed the cruise exactly as advertised from Nuremberg to Budapest without any ship transfers or extra busing. I have nothing but praise for the Viking Jarl and its crew and staff. It was a highly enjoyable first-class experience all the way. The ship is downright beautiful. The food by chef Robert was excellent and the wait staff was superb. We became friends with several waiters. Program director Mario did an amazing job keeping everything running smoothly and the city tours varied from good to excellent. We booked a lower-level cabin with a small window near the waterline, thinking that in November it would be dark anyway for much of the time while the ship was moving, and that it would be too cold to sit on a balcony or even open a French window. This certainly turned out to be the case. Whenever there was an opportunity for sightseeing we did it from the lounge, the restaurant, or sometimes the upper deck. Read Less

First of all, we ended up on the Jarl instead of the Alta, due to low river water. My husband and I had never been on a cruise before, so we did not know what to expect. We were pleased with the accommodations and were comfortable. We were on the lowest deck, so very little view from the clearstory window, but that meant more privacy from passing ships too! The staff was very friendly and willing to accommodate our needs. The food was outstanding! We liked how the menu was designed to allow us to sample the ethic food of the area we happened to be in, plus chose other dishes if we chose too. We were able to get to know one waiter, Jasenko, in particular for our party of eight, and he learned to know what we liked. We enjoyed seeing him each day. My husband and I went on the scheduled tours that came with our package, plus paid extra to go on additional tours in the afternoon. We were glad we did, for the history of each city was interesting, the old buildings and churches were interesting to look at, and we developed an appreciation for the long history of Europe. We took hundreds of pictures! We were very impressed with how well organized the activities were. Kudos to the Activity Director, Mario. He even prepared us the day before for sights we would see, and things we might like to do when we had free time. We even were able to see and hear samples of the ethnic music in the lounge while visiting various cities! Even our departure was well organized! We appreciated how the staff made sure we saw our luggage and put it on the bus we were departing on. The organization we saw on this trip was truly amazing. We enjoyed the trip so much, that we have booked a river cruise trip on the Rhine for November 2016 with our same group of eight! :) Read Less

Very impressed! Service was great everywhere, and any time we ate. The entire staff was friendly and really went out of their way to make the experience enjoyable. You could tell they liked their jobs. Breakfast couldn’t be better, as far as I’m concerned. The main dining room had order items like eggs benedict, pancakes or French toast, and a buffet. At the buffet there was an omelet station, fresh fruit, pastries, oatmeal, meats, yogurt, potatoes, and veggies. The Aquavit Terrace also had a lighter menu of fruit, cheese tray, pastries. There was also a 24 hour coffee station where you can make a cappuccino, hot chocolate or tea anytime you want. They often put out cookies here as well. Lunch we had onboard the ship twice. It is usually a simple choice of pasta, salads and breads. Usually we were off the ship. Dinner was consistently delicious! Usually there were three choices for appetizer, entree, and dessert. All I chose were great. They had an Austrian theme night, with sausage, sauerkraut, and other local specialties. Tables are not reserved, so we came early to get our large table. In the evening there was piano music nightly. There was opera singing one night, and a Hungarian group of performers one night. Also we had a game of trivia one night as well. I was really surprised to find dancing after 10 pm, where the crew got the passengers on the dance floor. I was not expecting the energy in the evening. Definitely more active than I’ve seen on some ocean cruises. I've been on a lot of cruises, but this was my first river cruise. I would definitely recommend Viking to anyone. Read Less

The ships are beautiful, good service, good food and wine and the local guides were delightful. I enjoyed going through the locks on the Romantic Danube itinerary and each port of call had several options to different interests. I can't praise Viking enough for the wonderful experience. If I were to do anything different would be to go earlier in the fall so that I could enjoy more time at the outdoor areas of the ship. But I did spent time at the lounge with it's beautiful and comfortable furnishings, enjoying a cup of coffee and letting the marvelous scenery passing by. The city tours were great and a pleasure to have the audio boxes so we could all hear the guide even at some distance. Read Less

Due to the severe drought in Europe, we had to stay in a hotel in Budapest the first night, then travel to meet our ship, then change ships part way through. However, Viking cannot be blamed for that, and they certainly did all they could to make it easy and enjoyable for us. They even gave us a credit for a future trip to make up for our inconvenience. We had been keeping our eye on this situation so were not surprised by changes. The hotel was very nice and we had good meals provided for us there. The large cities on this tour (Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg) were impressive, had wonderful approachable local guides and tours, and allowed time for shopping. The smaller towns and stops were even more enjoyable for us. I thought we would get tired of seeing so many cathedrals and abbeys, but each was unique and different and IMPRESSIVE! We wished that we would have extended our stay with more time in Budapest since time there was so limited. The staff on both ships were superb; efficient, quiet, quick, thorough, open to requests, and approachable. Everyone was friendly and so helpful. Our cabin was on the top level of the boat and had a small balcony which would have been nice if the boat had traveled during the day. We would have liked more daytime travel seeing sights from the river. Food was great. Piano bar was enjoyable for an after dinner drink and relaxation. This tour provided meals at a couple of local restaurants with more ethnic food which was interesting and very nice. Unfortunately, we missed the musical entertainment that was brought on the ship since we had such early flights to leave. This is the second Viking cruise that we have taken and flights and transfers are always easy since they do all the work. We don't like the long flights, but that is certainly not Viking's fault. We are seasoned ocean cruisers and thought we should try river cruise having heard so much raving from friends and online reviews. Coming from the ocean cruise angle, river cruise is a bit small, bland, and boring. Due to the low water level, we were put in a hotel (Marriott) the first night at Budapest. Since we are gold elite member of Marriott, we were conveniently upgraded and had access to the concierge lounge which has a spectacular view of Budapest. Believe it or not, this was the highlight of our cruise! We were put back in the cruise after the first night and had to change ship eventually. The cruise staff did their very best to accomodate. Service was decent overall. However, if you are looking for food quality and entertainment, they are literally non existent compared to ocean cruises. Viking's saying that "spending less time getting there and more time being there" didn't hold true either. We didn't find the excursions any better than those of ocean cruises. I expected some in-depth immersion in each city's culture through the daily excursions. But I find the excursions lack of lustre. Or maybe I was hyped up too much by all the ravings and had too high an expectation. Entertainment is basically a one man band playing the piano. Food is short of variety and innovation. I couldn't remember even one meal or one dish that stands out. High tea was the worst. I definitely make better scones and cakes than the chef (and I'm only a mediocre cook)! Most of the time, the top deck is closed off due to passing under bridges. We're basically stuck in a very small vessel. At times when we docked, our vessel is parked side by side another one, meaning that we couldn't even open the blind. Coincidentally, we met another couple whom we acquainted in an earlier ocean cruise. They were seasoned ocean cruisers as well. They hold the same view as we do. That we won't be going to river cruise any time soon or in the foreseeable future. Having friendly cruise staff just doesn't cut as river cruises are expensive and expect more. PS By the way, I expected at least a small fitness center on board. But sorry, none! Read Less

We took a 'Mom and Two Sons' river cruise from Budapest to Nuremburg. It was time to spend together traveling like we had not before and visiting cities, world heritage sites and countries that none of us had visited before. Every facet of out Viking experience was timely, stress-free and truly enjoyable, From the time we were met at the Budapest airport to the 'ship swap' to the Viking Atla to delivering us to the Nuremburg airport, we were treated like kings and queen. I do not enjoy crowds, so the size of the ship was perfect. Service was just right and quickly our 'favorites' were known and served. Each crew person was personable, fun to get to know and in a short time, became a friend who we cared for very much. Dining was so enjoyable and the chefs were fabulous. We truly enjoyed our meals and were very happy for the excursions so we could walk off the calories! Each excursion guide was friendly, informative and interesting because they lived in the cities where we toured. The extras from the city-natives was insightful and I felt like they were sharing their love of history as well as the beautiful architecture. I especially enjoyed walking on the Roman/Medieval roads, seeing the art and sculptures and the magnificent cathedrals. Realizing how real World War II remains in the cities we visited was eye-opening. The physical losses and rebuilding was truly conveyed to all of us and gave me a new appreciation for each city's peserverance. We did not have the opportunity to stay for any extra time in Budapest, although I certainly would love to return. Yes! I would love to take a longer river cruise when I retire in 2-3 years. What a great way to start a new phase of my life! Perhaps my sons will be able to come with me once again so we could create more memories. I have recommended Viking to many of my friends and co-workers because it was such a wonderful way to travel and see the world. Thank you, Viking, for my memories of the beautiful cities, valleys and time spent with my sons. Read Less
