The food was outstanding with good variety. The food service staff were very accommodating to prepare dishes we wanted even though it may have not been on the days menu. Basically this is a cruise for older adults, not for children. The service from cruise team was amazing. I would suggest going a little later in the year as weather would be warmer. We had to wear coats each day. Outstanding educational experience. Extremely enjoyable and memorable. Great pics. We recommend adding on extra days on front and end of cruise to have time to experience some nearby areas. Suggest you go as a group... the ship has great gathering space and opportunity to relax and socialize at various times especially after dinner in the evening. Read Less

We chose this cruise to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The facilities on the boat, the room, the staff, the food, and the tours far exceeded our expectations. Our cabin was spacious and always clean and made up. We really enjoyed the heated floor in the bathroom The crew were friendly, most helpful and always accommodating. Our every need was quickly satisfied. The food was, without exception, fantastic. It was served by the friendly and courteous wait staff, and was always hot. The activities director was absolutely superb. We had fascinating speakers and demonstrations that were relevant to the locale we would be visiting. All, and I emphasize all, the tour guides were most knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. They had a wonderful amount of details about the community not often heard on a tour. The best thing about the cruise was the small group of passengers. by the time the tour ended, we were like family and this includes the crew. We decided this was the best anniversary present we ever received and look forward with anticipation to sailing aboard Viking in the near future. Read Less

Even though the tour was billed, Romantic Danube, my cousins and I enjoyed it as a family. There is so much to recommend: friendly, attentive service; delicious and healthy variety in dining experiences; organized excursions with knowledgeable guides with great personalities; but most of all, the convenience of having room, board and transportation taken care of means a traveler's time can be spent enjoying beautiful scenery, architecture, history and culture of these special cities and towns. A special surprise was exceptional weather for this time of year and a variety of Christmas markets. Finding unique gifts with the flavor of each country or region was the icing on the cake. Even though our ship experienced a mechanical difficulty, the program directly quickly organized several options so that we could enjoy time ashore while the problem was being fixed. The only thing I would do to improve the experience is to offer a cruise that allows more time in places which need more than one day to explore such as Budapest and Vienna. Read Less

We were 10 people from NY and CA, all first time on river cruise. Four of us arrived 3 days earlier, and we took a trip to Prague for two days by ourselves. We reserved the bus online and was relatively easy. The only problem we had was locating the bus stop to Prague at the Nuremberg main train station. The advice is to make sure you find some local people going to the same place while you are waiting for the bus. We actually missed our scheduled bus because we were waiting at the wrong bus stop. Fortunately we were able to catch the next bus a little more than an hour later. The bus fare was around $30 round trip (if I remember correctly) if you book it online ahead of the time. Otherwise the fare will be double if you purchase at the bus station. The included walking tour in Nuremberg does include the courthouse of Nuremberg trial. Of course you can pay for an optional tour to visit the courthouse. We however took the trip ourselves the first day of the cruise while the ship was in Nuremberg (actually Erlangen, a small town about 20 miles away). Viking provided free shuttle bus service to downtown Nuremberg, and we took the metro to the courthouse. The courthouse is about 10 minute walk from the metro station. I forgot the station name. When I got a metro map from the hotel, it listed the interesting places to visit, and the station to get off for the courthouse was listed. Fortunately we were able to visit courtroom 600 on that day. My wife and the ladies were excited that the Christmas markets at Vienna and Budapest were open while we were there. It was quite an experience to enjoy the local culture at the Christmas markets. Of course it's always good to taste the local snacks at the markets. The Viking service was excellent. We bought the tickets to the Hungarian Opera House on the last night at Budapest. Originally we asked them if they could pack some sandwiches for us. However they actually arranged an early dinner for us. The Opera ticket price was very reasonable, ranging from less than US $10 to about $100. The Opera House is about 20 to 25 minutes from the dock. We paid around $7, the cheapest price. The seats were not very good. But it's worth just to see the Opera House. The only optional tours we took were the dumpling tasting and the concert at Vienna. The dumpling tasting was good, but the concert was not that great. It was in a small hall and there were only a few musicians, more like a string quartet. Overall we enjoyed the cruise very much and we certainly will consider another Viking river cruise. Read Less

Of all the excursions, Gottweig Abby was my favorite. It wasn't overrun with tourists and the views, people and nectarine products were amazing. It was so interesting to hear the history and see the beauty of this place. Although we didn't spend as much time in port as I thought we would, the time cruising in the evening was usually very pretty and we had one afternoon with some great photo ops from the boat. One of the best things we did was break off from the tour group in Regensburg and Passau. We decided to do that after having no time to explore on our own in Vienna and IMHO the tour wasn't that interesting. The service was generally good, as well as the food. I don't drink which is unusual I know, but the lounge staff stopped asking me what I wanted to drink about 2 days in when I didn't order anything alcoholic :-/ I have to say our room steward made up for that by being amazing! She was friendly and gave us great service and great tips about going on shore ... it was like having our own concierge! We handed her a huge tip just for her we would not have like the trip half as much without her. While I would not make this particular trip again, I am considering a river cruise in France since so many of the other passengers recommended the cruise that goes to Normandy. TIP: If you want to explore Budapest you HAVE to get the extension. Otherwise you get a bus tour with 2 very quick stops. And the Budapest currency, the florint, is not needed. Everyone excepts Euros and almost everyone accepts US dollars. Read Less

I wanted to see Vienna and Budapest (and the Danube) in a brief amount of time without lots of logistics, packing, unpacking, etc. I also wanted to have historical and cultural information available to me along the way so the trip would mean more. The amount of information, local guides that were available on shore and on board, was superb. The food, of course, was delicious. I loved the surprises, like the tiny glasses of hot chocolate after returning from a shore excursion and the treats in the lounge. The strudel served one afternoon was out of thIs world. The staff is exceptional. They are friendly and genuine but not obtrusive. I loved the public spaces on the ship. The outdoor spaces, like the dining area at the rear the shIp, was fabulous. What a treat to have a delicious lunch outside as the ship travels along. It was amazing the Captain invited us to see inside the navigation area. It was an unexpected highlight. I knew this trip would be fun. I did not expect it to be prefect. Thank you. Read Less

We accompanied some friends on this cruise and they were the ones responsible for choosing Viking as well as the destination. However we were MOST impressed with EVERY aspect of the cruise and are definitely planning rebook with Viking. The staff was extremely attentive and personable. They went beyond on a personal level although many of the thoughtful experiences were built into the ship's agenda. For example, on our first excursion, we started out in a cold rain. As we left the ship, we were offered nice (and large) umbrellas. Upon our return, we were greeted with warm towels and hot chocolate! Every excursion was well-orchestrated and the logistics were obviously well-planned. The guides for our excursions were very well informed and attentive to our needs while away from the ship. In addition to the built-in excursions, we were also given plenty of free time to explore the area or participate in another tour of our choice. The public rooms provided a great place to gather for large or small groups. The view was spectacular from almost any area in that space. Read Less

Let me begin with my overall feeling about Viking, in case you do not read through the entire review: I will never go near Viking again. We did not get anywhere near value for our money; plus, the company has a real attitude about dealing with issues (they are very nice during the sales process). We decided on this trip very last minute and were “lucky” to get our cabin, due to a cancellation, so our research ahead of time was limited. We discovered, after the fact, that there are plenty of other choices and have heard some very good things regarding other brands. We had put off taking a cruise for fear of seasickness and thought that a river cruise would be calmer and a good way to "get our sea legs." We were right. The cruise (what there was of it) was calm. However, the long river boats (similar for all brands) are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, so if you are looking for all the bells and whistles of an ocean cruiser, such as a swimming pool, these much smaller boats may not be for you. The issues: We had to switch ships midstream and a lot of our time was spent on buses, getting from one port to another, rather than on the boat. We were told that there were dry river issues and various lock problems, which required us to switch ships. However, we found out that was not the case. A Viking crew member told me that the midstream change had nothing to do with river conditions – it had to do with logistics only. Viking needed to reshuffle the positioning of their fleet of river boats. In fact, we met a couple from another Viking ship that was traveling the same route during the same period of time who told us that they did not have to switch. After we were told about the need to switch at one of the regular evening briefing sessions, a few people spoke up and questioned the basis for the decision to switch boats. The program director told the group, in a very demeaning tone, that he will not discuss this any further. In fairness, I want to point out the positive. The crew – cleaning crew, front desk, kitchen, as well as the bus and tour guides – were friendly and diligent. The rooms were fine, and the showers more than satisfactory. The main issue was the occasional malfunctioning of the toilet, where the flush, which operated via a vacuum, would not work. This was a nuisance, especially late at night or early in the morning, but the staff would quickly fix the problem when it occurred (multiple times on both ships - the one we embarked on and the one we switched to midstream). There was also a slight sewage smell on both ships, but we couldn't tell if it was our room or from the river. Back home, we contacted Viking to get some compensation (for all the interrupted cruise time). All I could say is their response was extremely insulting. They would not, and have not, agreed to compensate us for anything. They offered a paltry, tiny discount on a future Viking trip, even though we told them that we were not planning on taking any future Viking cruises. And, if we took that discount, we would have to sign a waiver that we would not, among other things, write anything negatively on social media. Well, here we are… Read Less

Spent 3 wonderful days in Prague before leaving for river boat in Nurenberg, Received notification that our boat was being changed to another ship with the same accommodations. Two days into trip, we were told to pack up we were changing ships again. No explanation except the it was a corporate decision. We were bused at 8:30 in the morning to another port. Our day of planned tours were eliminated. Then because of traffic on the Danude we were delayed and passed our next stop and lost another tour destination. This was my 3rd cruise on a Viking ship. The river boat cruise is a gamble at best, but there were no environmental issues this time. In addition the food is only passable and uninspired. One evening steak was being offered and was so tough you could not cut it. It was offered the next evening in a soup, goulash, and still was tough. The crew did their best with the problems, however we were not pleased with how our cruised was handled and the rebate offered cannot erase a disappointing experience. We arrived in Budapest late and missed time on our extend trip. In retrospect if we eliminate the cruise and and only had experienced the wonderful dinners and tours in Prague and Budapest our vacation would of been perfect. Read Less

The staff was fantastic both in terms of their excellent service and their efficiency. If you needed any help with anything at all they would go out of their way to see that your needs or concerns were taken care of - our maid, Martina, didn't just clean and turn down our room, she brought my wife ice for her sore knee, extra pillows and just anything else we needed. She was by far the best at her job that we have ever encountered. The food was outstanding in terms of selection, taste and quality. It rivaled any five star restaurant that I have been at. The ship and the rooms are well laid out and very upscale. We had a balcony but didn't use it much because of all the presentations, entertaining games and other places to sit and socialize with our fellow passengers while watching the outside views at the same time. They don't have amenities like a pool or a workout room but you wouldn't have time for on board exercise anyway because you spend so much time walking while touring the various historical, architectural and cultural sites in each of the cities you are visiting. If you have an appreciation for great architecture, important historical sites and the cultures of other peoples, you will love this trip. Almost all the local people that we dealt with were polite, considerate, informative and very interesting. Sometimes complete strangers that we came across on our tours and walks would greet us in a friendly manner. I would definitely recommend this company for anyone planning a beautiful river cruise in Europe. Read Less

The idea of a river cruise has appealed to us for a while. We have done a couple of large cruises-our last one had 4000 passengers and 2000 cruise and we decided that we had had enough of those. We looked at several of the other river cruise companies and chose Viking for 2 reasons. One was that if we booked and paid in full, our flights were free and the second reason was after talking to some people who had done river cruises, Viking sounded like it was the best choice. We were definitely not disappointed. Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze. The ship is beautiful and the cabin was clean and comfortable. The local guides were friendly and knowledgeable and the tours were enjoyable, informative and just the right length. The thing that was the most outstanding was the staff :,from the Cruise Director to the wait staff,to the cabin stewards,to the kitchen staff to reception to crew. Friendly and efficient! It was nice to be on a ship where the maitre d' actually helped out in the dining room! We would happily cruise with Viking again. Read Less

The two special highlights of the cruise for us were; The first evening's cruise, after a fabulous dinner, was up and down the Danube in the city of Budapest with all the major buildings, bridges and monuments fully lit up. Great guides and if there was a chance of rain, they had umbrellas for you as you left the ship and a treat when you came back on board. I have been on much bigger ships and I liked the size of the ship Jarl. I had previously been on cruises to the Caribbean on a different line. I chose Viking for the service, and that part was certainly not a disappointment. You are treated like royalty, and I like being a princess even if it is just for seven days. The service is even better than on Holland ocean cruises that I have taken, and that's saying something. The wine flows and if you are not careful, your glass is never empty, which can make next morning's tour a challenge. The food is like first class airline food. It's good, but nothing to rave about. The desserts and breads, in particular, seem to have been refrigerated. Clearly, there is no baking on board. But the view is lovely and, as I said before, the service is amazing. A hint: No matter who books your airline, allow at least two hours to change planes if you go through Charles DE Gaulle. (And I hear that Heathrow and the airport in Amsterdam are the same.) Added security slows down movement from one terminal to another SIGNIFICANTLY. People are flipping out as the lines are so long and move so slowly. An hour and 20 min just to get through the passport check line is typical. And the distance between gates and terminals is huge at CDG. (Think run down a terminal, stand in line for over an hour, run through another terminal, get on an elevator, get on a bus, run down another terminal. That's typical. If you cannot run, allow four hours or request a wheelchair.) The booking agents assure you that you will be fine with 90 min between gates. NO SO. Save yourself the anxiety and insist on more time to make the change at any major airport in Europe. Security is a good thing. Lying to people about how long it take is not good. Otherwise, the trip was marvelous. BTW: Do this trip from Nuremburg to Budapest. In Nuremberg, the ship is docked in an industrial area in Erlanger. Your view there is a crane and a concrete plant. Would be a bummer of a way to end a cruise. In Budapest, your last view is an evening cruise on the Danube as all the historic buildings in Budapest are lit up like Christmas. It is a glorious sight. That's the final memory you want. Read Less

My wife and I are senior citizens in our upper 70s, but reasonably mobile. This tour suited us well, requiring a modest amount walking and featuring highly informative guided visits. All was excellent. Meals, service, itinerary ... no complaints. We were met at all junctures by competent staff that handled greeting, transfers, etc. in first-class fashion. Our river cruise was complicated by high water levels, but although this caused us to miss a day's itinerary the time was well compensated. The kitchen staff catered sensitively to my wife's food allergies. She can't tolerate wine, but the rest of us in our group made up for it! (The wine was of notably high quality.) Meals were excellent, although as a result I gained rather more weight than I expected! Our cabin was just the right size for us and well organized. We particularly appreciated seeing so many cities without having to move our luggage, and it was a pleasure to watch the world go by from our stateroom balcony. Shore excursions were arranged efficiently, local guides being very good and nearly always had time ashore to do our own thing. Programme Director, Lee, was extremely helpful and ensured we were all in the right place at the right time, explaining everything to us the night before. Food was outstanding, some of the best I have experienced. Staterooms immaculate, very comfortable bed and restocked with bottled water and toiletries every day. On board entertainment was varied and good. Only one criticism - we couldn't use the sun deck when sailing for the last 2.5 days owing to low bridges, such a shame when the sun was out. We chose the riverboat cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg ("Romantic Danube") because it enabled us to visit several cities we had not seen before, and because the land tours offered seemed more educational, historical and interesting to us than some of the other Viking land tours. The Viking staff were terrific, and the ship is perfect for riverboat cruises. The ship is modern, clean and efficient. We opted for a cabin with a veranda, and are really glad we did. We enjoyed sitting out on the veranda, and the more spacious feeling the veranda gives the room. We loved the fact that the cruise is almost "all inclusive". We did not have to pay extra for the city tours in each town we visited, nor did we have to pay extra for wine or beer taken with meals. We had heard wonderful things about Viking. My Aunt wanted to do a river cruise to finish out her bucket list for her 96th birthday so we researched and chose Viking. A family group jumped at the chance to join her for this trip. We chose the Romantic Danube. Had to drive from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh to take advantage of their fare offerings, which were actually very reasonable. We were on Air France (really Delta) and were able to upgrade to comfort plus for $198 round trip. We thought it worth the price. The embarkation was seamless - we were picked up from the airport in a very timely manner, loaded up on a very comfortable big tour bus and taken to the ship where check-in was a breeze. The service of all staff members was impeccable from the room maid Anita, to the bartenders and the dining room wait staff. Special thanks to Sarah and Victor who treated us like family. We mostly went on the included shore excursions which were very interesting with well trained guides. Evening entertainment was provided by the staff and while it was simple we did have fun. The ship layout encourages meeting and socializing with other guests, but you are not forced to if that's not your thing. All six of us pretty much agreed that the only stop we weren't crazy about was our last stop of Nuremberg. Budapest, Vienna, Krems, Passau and Regensburg were all delightful. Unfortunately, the only negative came when it was time to go to the Nuremberg airport. We were dropped off with all our luggage several blocks away from where we were to check in. The guide said she would bring baggage carts for us but after waiting quite a while we dragged our bags as best we could and found her inside chatting with guests. The airport was quite difficult to negotiate - which is not the fault of Viking, but it might be best for them to find a different final city as their final destination. When you have people in their 60s to 90s and a bunch of heavy luggage, it leaves a bad taste to not be able to get any assistance. If I could I would give it about a 4.5 but this doesn't allow that option. We would definitely use Viking again, on a different trip like the Rhine or Elbe or Douro. I would not recommend this cruise for children at all, and think many younger folks - twentysomethings - might find it lacking in social opportunities. The main age group seemed to be late 40's to early 70's with a scattering at either end of that spectrum. Read Less

I can only imagine the splendor of such an ocean going vessel if it has an inkling of what we have experienced with the river cruises. Read Less
