All I can say is that I can totally NOT relate to anyone giving the Grandeur of the Seas good reviews! Our experience on this May 24th, 2013 FIRE Of the Seas cruise out of Baltimore was FAR from a vacation or good time to say the least! If you have previously cruised on the Carnival Pride out of Baltimore then you will be thoroughly disappointed with this ship in comparison. Here are some comparisons of our experience on RC's Grandeur vs Carnival Pride: STATEROOMS: Grandeur - you get a mini bar stocked with super tiny bags of peanuts, snickers, other tiny candies and a few bottled waters. Liquor is not stocked nor allowed in the rooms. You can only order beer and wine to your room via room service. Carnival Pride - you get a mini bar stocked with assorted sodas, large bottled waters and liquors in your stateroom that get replenished everyday during daily room service cleaning or at your request. STATEROOM SERVICE: Grandeur - Where do I start...we never formally met out stateroom attendant until about Day 2 when we happened to bump into him in the hallway on our way to dinner. We had no way to contact him directly, so anytime we needed anything we had to call the Information Desk (they were even worse in the service department because they NEVER followed through on any of our requests as they stated). They would frequently forget to replenish our toilet paper and never would replace our towels/rags after removing used ones during the daily room service cleaning. It got to the point that I had to actually roam the hallways to find our stateroom attendant and ask for toilet paper, towels, rags, etc. My husband and I had to actually share a hand towel to wash up because we had no rags for a full day. We also never received our daily cruise itineraries on time, so a majority of the time we never knew what was going on, where we were, lunch times, etc. Overall extremely unorganized and poor communication. Carnival Pride - Our stateroom attendant came and introduced himself minutes after we checked into our room on Day 1. There was a direct number to contact the stateroom attendant anytime you needed something. They were extremely efficient at replenishing toiletries and never once did we have to ask for any standard toiletries or towels. They were great about ensuring we had our cruise itineraries the day prior so we knew what was going on. STATEROOM AMENTIES: Grandeur - We were advised by Information Services that only people with Suites could order movies to their rooms. Even though it's advertised as being an amenity in the stateroom pamphlet, you cannot view your SeaPass charges on your flat screen TV. You actually have to trek to Information Services and stand in a long line anytime that you want to review your charges. The TV's were not interactive at all as advertised, so you also cannot book excursions from your room. Also the USB connections on the TV to watch our own movies via our devices did not work. The only weather station they have only includes the temparature in Celsuis, so you never know what temparature it is if you are from the U.S. Also on all of the interactive screens on the ship only show Celsuis. Big oversight on their end! Carnival Pride - although their TV's are not flat screen, they are all interactive. You can check your charges, book excursions, and even order room service from the luxury of your room. We never had to go to Information Services for this reason. Had a station to show what the wind speed was, tide information and the weather was in Fahrenheit! ENTERTAINMENT: Grandeur - If you are under 35 or like to have fun in general, stay away from this ship. The entertainment on this ship is clearly geared towards a more senior crowd. There was little to nothing going on other than constant Bingo, a non-impressive performance of YMCA by a group of unimpressive men, a few Oldies themed dance nights (and I mean REALLY Oldies nights) and a few gymnastic rope performers. I don't know about the kids programs but I can tell you that I was constantly witnessing Terrible Two tantrums and babies crying everywhere, so I'm assuming they may not have had many activities for kids either. Carnival Pride - has entertainment for all ages. You rarely saw kids on the ship other than playing in the pools and on the pool slides. There were shows all day (literally) everday. Between comedians, game shows, etc. We witnessed all ages having fun - from seniors, 20 somethings, middle ages, to kids dance clubs. No one feels left out. ONBOARD STAFF/ATMOSPHERE: Grandeur - generally not very friendly and seemed like they almost never knew the answers to anything (Info Services, Food Services, etc), which became frustrating. We witnessed and personally experienced a number of staff members being rude or short to cruisers asking questions. Carnival Pride - you almost have to run from the nice people bc they are so open and ready to have a friendly conversation with you. Staff was always super nice and if they didn't know the answers would always research and get back to you within seconds. There is so much more, but these are the important highlights. Overall the Grandeur is not worth the 42 Million Dollar renovation, nor is it worth the higher rates than Carnival Pride. Save yourself the money and don't cruise on this ship!   Read Less

I place Royal Caribbean in the mid point of cruise lines but this cruise exceeded my expectations. The Good - We had a group of 11 and the staff at the MDR handled us extremely well each night. Kudos to them! We also found the food in the MDR to be better than the buffet - not my usual experience. Maybe it was because they did not share a kitchen, not typical. Found the prime rib, lamb shank, and other dishes to be first rate. Again, the service was excellent. Did not eat in the specialty restaurants, did not think the price was worth it. - Lunches in the Windjammer buffet were OK - good variety of food but nothing special. - Our veranda room (7012) was clean and organized well. We had an adjoining room with our daughter and her husband and toddler - not too many of these. Dan, the cabin attendant, was excellent. We were on deck 7 which is ideal because you can walk down two flights of stairs to the MDR or walk up two flights to the pool. Avoid the elevators, they are slow. - They have an adults-only Solarium sunbathing deck - sliding roof when its warm - nice cafe there - super! - Fitness room was small but good equipment and we could always find a piece to work on. Francis, the exercise instructor, was good. None of the equipment had TVs so bring your MP3 player. - Entertainment was OK - the Temptations Tribute band was great - comedian got raves - others were good. Lecture on the dogs of the Titanic was good. - Participating activities were mixed. The trivia games were fun. The Bingo was awful - only 24% return and they had those darn machines that allow players to use 30 cards. Please outlaw those. The odds in the casino are stacked against you. Their Ultimate Texas Holdem is a license for them to steal. - A nice adult hideaway is the Viking Crown lounge - nice and quiet. - Docked on the west end. Easy to take the fast boat to Hamilton, a nice town to stroll around. You can also find taxis and scooters and bikes. There is shopping which (IMHO) is the usual port crud. But, there are two really nice attractions. The Bermuda museum is GREAT - spend three hours there and you will learn a lot about the island. The beach (next to the museum) is a nice sandy beach to relax - bar - restaurant - water rentals - very nice. For a nice bite and brew, try the Frog and Onion. One of our party rode a scooter for two days and had a blast. Two others took the ferry to St. Georges and had a good time. - Took the ferry to Hamilton one day and walked around - a very nice and clean town. Shops were a cut above the shops near the dock, but pricey. The Spinaker had nice T-shirts. Flanagan's Pub got good reviews. - Previous reviews mentioned foul odors on the ship, but we experienced none. - For a visual treat, go topside when leaving Baltimore: you can see Fort McHenry, the Key bridge, and other landmarks. Coming into Bermuda on a sunny day is awesome. Our Captain took us south of the island and all the way around to our NW dock. - Internet service on the boat is slow and intermittent. When we docked, there was a dockside ISP that charged $10 for 24hrs. It was faster than the boat's service but barely adequate. On land, we did not find many places that offered Internet service. The Bad We got off to a rough start when it took us two hours waiting in line to board. Heard lots of excuses: ship was late, new destination, etc. Not good. Once on the ship, things went more smoothly, although we had the usual mad dash to eat with 2,000 other guests. - Liquor policy is penal. Although they allow you to bring on two bottles of wine, they confiscate your luggage and make you go to deck 2, open up your luggage and show that it is not liquor. Folks felt like criminals. Should be a better way. If you have liquor, they will confiscate it and return it to you around 6pm the last night. Read Less

We have just returned from a 10 night cruise around the Greek Islands with Royal Caribbean on Grandeur of the Seas and it was just like a floating holiday camp. For the money we paid we expected much more. The entertainment was worse than terrible, really boring cabaret - all American singers - you couldn't even call them singers, it was more like they were talking. You expect a luxurious relaxed holiday and instead you get a very loud experience were on a regular day to day basis most of the entertainment is the guests themselves being drawn into partaking in belly flopping, karoke and taking part in "The Quest" where they have to run around in teams looking for items at the request of the loud mouthed irritating host. Even a normal game of Bingo is turned into a long drawn out charade where inbetween calling the numbers the same host constantly tries to sell further activities to the guests. It is all about getting as much money out of people as possible all the time, everything is extra, even when you pay for a spa treatment which start at $99 you have to pay a further £20 tip which you aren't expecting. The ship had six jacquzzis and from start to finish none were working. The pools are small and one of them has constant silly games going on so it isn't possible to use it. Even paying for gratuities in advance is a let down when you get your book of vouchers in the belief you can give them out to your favourite crew members only to find you can only give them to your head waiter, assistant waiter, waiter and stateroom attendant. Bad luck if you get friendly with the barman, cleaner or anyone else as you will have to tip them yourselves at extra cost. Save yourself some money and check out your cruise to the fullest first or find a nice luxurious hotel somewhere - you will still save money! If you hate holiday camps do not try this cruise liner!! We sailed from Venice, Italy June 22, 2012. The ship, food, and entertainment are fine. However, the two rooms we were given completely ruined the cruise. We were given rooms 3644 and 3652 by an internet travel agent. These rooms are ocean view rooms located beneath the dining room according to the deck plan offered online. Unfortunately for us the deck plan map seems to be incorrect. My rooms are below the commercial kitchen that operates for 20 hours a day. There is no way to rest in theses rooms with the banging, clanking and thumps. The noise usually stops around mid-night and resumes around 4:30 am. I found it hard to enjoy anything during this cruise. I put up with the noise for a few nights because I was trying to be a good sport. I finally went to the guest services desk and they assured me that there were no more rooms at my level of room. I was offered the opportunity to move to an inside room which I declined because of claustrophobia issues with some of my family members. The desk clerk said he would speak to the kitchen manager and ask them to keep the noise down. Two nights later I couldn't take it anymore, I accepted and inside cabin so I could sleep. We found it hard to enjoy anything the ship offered as entertainment or food. The ports of call all ran together as a never ending nightmare of sleep deprivation. Don't worry though. Royal Caribbean sent some chocolate covered strawberries to our room and offered us 20% off another cruise(within one year), unfortunately on Royal Caribbean. No thank you. A customer service representative told me on the phone that you should research your room choice before you accept the room. I choose not to choose Royal Caribbean in the future. Read Less

I have recently returned from two back to back cruises [one week Italian Coast one week Spanish Coast] on the Grandeur of the Seas. The ship was old and far too small for the amount of passengers. I was very disappointed in everything about this cruise. The stateroom had several faults i.e. ill fitting cupboards which caused the wardrobe door to fall open when the ship was in choppy waters, and banging against the wall during the night. The fridge didn't close fully, so items were not very chilled and ice melted quite quickly. The back of the mirrors on the bathroom cupboards was scratched. There was nowhere to store our empty suitcases and the Air Conditioning failed when in port. On the upside our stateroom attendant was superb. He was caring and fastidious about everything. The Windjammer buffet was a total shambles. The food was mediocre. There were only cold plates available for hot food at breakfast and only hot plates available for salad meals at lunchtime. Items were laid out in an uncoordinated fashion eg. toast, butter and jam were not adjacent and this meant walking around all the time looking for items amongst so many passengers all doing the same. After taking food finding somewhere to sit was impossible as there were so many people all trying to find a seat. The only available cold drinks were water,lemonade and ice tea which is something I normally like but it was tasteless. Tea and coffee were available, but on one occasion when there were no cups I was told by an assistant that I would have to go around the other side to find one. We chose My Time Dining, but when I went online to reserve as suggested, the only time available was 7.30pm. I booked only to discover that it clashed with many evening events that we would like to have attended. The menus were very ordinary,[nothing special for a cruise] There were many Indian style dishes to choose from, but nothing outstanding. Also the meals were tepid and consisted of only three courses. We were forced to complain to customer care when were were kept over two hours for a tepid three course meal, which caused us to miss the show one evening. The seating was so crowded that it was impossible to pass between tables in some places and the waiters were having difficulties getting through to some diners. Though they all worked very hard and were completely polite and helpful, there were many duties they carried out in a less than professional manner. The dress code was totally ignored by many diners, even on formal nights men were being allowed in wearing t.shirts and cropped trousers drinking from cans of beer as they entered the dining room. Although there were free teas and coffee available from a machine outside Windjammer, this meant making a journey to deck 9 from wherever you were. Coffee was not available from the bars and Ben and Jerry's sold it in paper cups and closed at 11.00.pm. Room service brought us coffee one night but it was disgusting, very strong and almost cold. The decks were overcrowded on sailing days. We felt like sardines in a can when sunbathing on loungers that were so close together, and there were only two swimming small swimming pools. One in the Solarium which was stained and shabby and one on deck which was better designed for children as it had more shallow features than swimming space. There wasn't a cinema onboard but films were available in our Stateroom on a very small screen TV, which meant we would have to stay in if we wanted to watch one. Pirates of the Caribbean was on every single night. Rugby World Cup was being played in New Zealand and many passengers were interested in the action but none was available anywhere to watch. I should have thought that a world sporting event such as that would warrant some coverage. The excursions were absolutely superb the destinations were good and the guides were excellent,in so far as they were very knowledgeable, friendly and informative. And the shows that we managed to see were also extremely entertaining and enjoyable. All the crew were most courteous and helpful, it was a real joy to be amongst them, nothing was too much trouble and they made every effort to make us feel special. The transition between cruises wasn't as smooth as it could have been. The last night of the first cruise we were invited to a cocktail party with the other consecutive cruisers where we were told that if we would be issued with new sea passes later that night and if we left the ship the following day we should use our old sea pass to leave and our new one to return. If we were not leaving the ship we didn't need to do anything. We should just use the new sea pass when next leaving the ship. However when we did this at the next port of call we were asked for ID which we had not taken with us, as were told that we would not need to go through security. I had heard such wonderful things about Royal Caribbean Cruises but I m afraid I will not being sailing with them again. I felt that it was not value for money in any way. Read Less

Where to begin. For a start there is nothing grand about the Grandeur of the Seas. A tired and jaded ship internally.The check in process made you feel nothing short of cattle. The room was okay, however my wife was able to write hello in the dust on the top of the TV at the beginning of the week and, by the end of the week it was still there! The bathroom has a mirrored cabinet and the doors didn't fit properly so they didn't close properly, a shower so poky that if you dropped anything your backside ended up in the room! We had a problem with our toilet one evening, we reported it it was 'fixed', but next time we flushed it emptied completely, re-filled and then flooded out the back into the bathroom. Where our room was it was right next to the anchor, so a nice morning alarm call when you docked, very noisy indeed despite wearing earplugs. The entertainment was poor indeed, much more suited to a Butlins. e.g We had a foreign lady singer who despite singing in English you still couldn't understand her. Lessons in how to make your towels into shapes of animals, very useful when you get home! A chef, the captain and his 2nd in command making a cake and spending most of the time throwing the ingredients around like 2 year olds. Beware the prices of drinks, not only is a service charge added but also tax. e.g bottled water in your room is $3.95, add the rest and it ends up costing $5.77. Wine at the dining room table is ridiculous prices. If you try to take alcohol onto the ship it is confiscated from you and given back at the end of your holiday, not daft are they? If you wish to buy an alcoholic drinks package it costs a pretty penny and you obviously feel obliged to get your money's worth, so don't bother unless you really like your drink! When we arrived we were able to have lunch in the Windjammer cafe, AVOID, unless you are a pig waiting to eat at a trough. Tried to eat something but found the food so poor it was better to stay hungry. Could only hope the evening meal in the dining room would be a delight. WRONG. First night was a sign of things to come. I had a steak that was like chewing Gandhi's flip flop, in fact that would have been more tender, my wife had pasta that had been sitting out for so long it had all congealed into a solid lump, needless to say we complained and, as for my wife's meal it was sent back to be nuked in the microwave because it came back in seconds scalding hot! This set the trend for the week. 78 chefs on board and they couldn't even cook something as simple as rice. One dish my wife had she could cut the rice like a cake, another dish which had basmati rice was in lumps and, was told by the waiter that it was meant to be like that because it was basmati! Needless to say she told him otherwise. Chocolate souffle was a pudding, raspberry panna cotta was a mousse, steaks NEVER got any better or edible, the only sure bet for taste and guarantee that it would arrive hot, was soup. My wife sent her meals back on a regular basis as they were either poorly cooked or cold.One evening we were so fed up with the food we didn't even bother going down to eat, this was the point when we wished we were on land and in a hotel because, if the food is rubbish in a hotel at least you can leave and look elsewhere for food. As for the breakfast this was hit and miss, if you ordered off the menu it was slightly better, although for an American company I was surprised they didn't seem to know what hash browns were, as these were on the menu but were just sliced fried potatoes. The toast was hilarious, it was like eating cardboard, whether it came from the kitchen or not, because in the dining room they also have a buffet area. Not recommended as the food is mainly cold. If you wish to have 'proper' OJ then you need to pay $3, cheek!! Complained to the Food & Beverage Manager who asked for my table number and said he would come and see us, needless to say he never appeared and felt it was okay to fob us off with cheap house wine that tasted like battery acid. Despite listening to my complaints I do feel it was the least he could do and speak to us face to face, as we were not the only ones unhappy with the food, everyone on our table was. We did three excursions and if it hadn't been for these we would have been trying to swim home! One thing that happened on the ship and caused the biggest buzz, was someone hung himself!! OMG. The saddest thing of all was how the family were dealt with. It was all in full view of the dining room windows, so people saw the coffin being taken off the ship, then the families luggage and then the family. Why the ship could not allow the family to stay on board until their transport arrived I'll never know. To end the holiday, our transfer pick up time was 9:00 am yet we were made to leave the ship at 7:00 am. All this is because we didn't book through Royal Caribbean direct, so it felt like thanks we've had your money now get off my ship. We complained to Royal Caribbean when we got home but what a surprise they weren't interested. If you want to go on a cruise for the first time DON'T go with Royal Caribbean. Read Less

We flew to palma, Majorca to join RCI'S Grandeur of the Seas, which was starting its summer Med season, having just sailed across the Atlantic.Arriving in Palma airport our first problem was waiting for our luggage for an hour and a half, along with the rest of the other pax embarking that day. Having finally collected our luggage we set off to find our coach transfer to the ship. We quickly realised that a very large queue was forming near us from all the people that had been on the same flight. This queue was massive, all waiting for the transfer to the ship, we waited another hour and 15 mins to finally get on a bus, not good so far I was thinking to myself and not a very good first impression to our friends who were embarking on their first cruise.Anyway a quick 20 minute transfer to the ship and the check in shed, our luggage was taken off the coach and onto the ship by RCI staff. There were about twelve desks open to those of us that had bothered to check in online and another six that checked in people that didn't do it online. I thought that we would fly through, no such luck!!! The majorcan staff manning the desks were all brand new and hardly knew what they were doing, so it took another hour to get to check in!!! Best of all the other queue of pax that hadn't checked in online were flying through!!Finally, we embarked and were told that our cabin(stateroom) was ready for occupation, which was great!! Off we went to our cabins.Arrived in the cabin to find the wrong bed configuration and the champaqgne and flowers I had ordered weren't there either. I immediately spoke to the deck supervisor, who happened to be passing, he assured me all would be put right ASAP, so off we went to the restaurant to find our table and then get some lunch. On our arrival in the Restaurant we found that we (our two friends and my friend whom I had made the booking for as a group)were on different tables miles apart. The Maitre'd was not yet present, so I assured my friends that I would come down and sort it all out later!!!Off we went for lunch in the Windjammer, straight away I thought the food was very good and you could have orange juice, lemonade or water by the glass free of charge with your meal. We bagged a table by the pool and ate our lunch in glorious sunshine. After the journey and all the trials so far, it was nice to relax for a while. We even grabbed a couple of beers before I set off to try and sort out the bed and dining situation.I first went down to the cabin to find nothing had changed in that department, eventhough it was now 3 hours later and the cabin steward was nowhere to be seen, so I decided to go to the restaurant.On entering the Atrium I heard alot of people chatting and standing in line, this was ominous, I thought, and my assumptions were correct! All these people( about 100) were all waiting to see the Maitre'd, who was all alone in dealing with all these people!!! I had had my fill of queueing by then and returned to friends and told them that we would try and sort it out when we went up for dinner!We were on second seating and so at around 7pm we went down to get changed and showered for dinner. Our cabin still hadn't been sorted but at least our baggage had arrived.We went for dinner and our friends sat on their allocated table and us on ours. We had great table companions on ours, but we had two seats empty, so when we left the restaurant we asked if our friends could join us, fortunately, the couple allocated to our table had changed to "My Time" dining, so our friends joined us for the rest of the cruise. Returning to our cabin later that evening the beds were correct, the flowers had arrived, but the champagne had not, nor was it going to for the rest of the cruise, but I had given up in the end!!So all in all a pretty awful embarkation and not a very good start onboard!!!We inadvertantly found out about the drinks packages on offer, so we all signed up for the "classic" package, which we thought was great value, until you add on the 15% service charge and the Spanish VAT 8%, so we paid $313.00 for the week. The bar service was at times very good, but at other times very bad. I also found some of the bar staff to be very arrogant. You could buy a drink in one bar and then move on to another bar and they wouldn't have the same drink? If you said " well, I just had one of those in the bar next door" they would shrug their shoulders and just stand there!! There is no "going the extra mile"!!! Special mentions to Mr C, Jez, Augustus and Rahul who were fantastic! Also no Sangria served in the bars on an all Spanish itinery cruise???As I have said, we had great table companions and were most certainly the noisiest table in our section. The food was very good and our waiters Ligorio and Rahul were superb, nothing was too much trouble for those guys. The head waiter was a rather creepy guy and did nothing to enhance our experience to my mind, so I didn't tip him at the end! The Windjammer food was ok, but nothing special and quite repetitive, it is also not very well laid out. It proved to be difficult to negotiate for people with walking difficulties I noticed. On several occasions I found myself moving chairs for them.The reception staff were a complete nightmare. On girl in particular was rude and just mumbled into her computer and her English was not very good. Basically, I dont think they know what they are doing, with dollars, pounds and euros to contend with, they just lost the plot! They got my bill totally wrong, which meant a drawn out conversation to settle my bill. I had nipped down to pay off my bill in small chunks each day with dollars, but none of this was on my final bill! Its a good job I had kept the receipts issued to me each time otherwise I would have been buggered, even after all that, the receptionist didn't apologise!!! Must have been my fault then for paying my bill on time and in dollars!!!The Entertainment was non existent! The Ents staff are all foreign and very hard to understand. Their sense of humour is difficult to grasp aswell and could be(and will be) mistaken for being rude! There is one English guy on the team and he was extremely arrogant. The entertainment is that the passengers are the entertainment!!! Too many guest paticipation events which quickly become tiresome. Karaoke every night with a list of songs you could sing that was years out of date! The comedian(british) was very sexist and came out with all the old cruise jokes! The two shows were the worst I have ever seen at sea, terrible singers and badly choreographed. The deck band "Bambleo" sang the same seven songs during every set, all Latin music aswell, which the Ents staff liked, but none of the passengers could relate to! We knew all the songs by the end and in what order they came in!!!The ship is very nice although somewhat past her best! Very much like P&O's Oceana with regards to decor and layout. The inside cabin(1st time) was a great size and very clean, the beds were lovely. No tea and coffee making facilities, which I really missed.Didn't speak to one of the ships officers and found them to be very aloof and up their own backsides, they just failed to mix with the passengers and didn't even acknowledge you, very bad!The passengers were a great mix, for some reason there were hordes of Irish onboard, which made a great laugh. We met some lovely people. Overall, I think RCI need to up their game if they want to keep the Brits happy this summer in the Med and most certainly sort out their nightmare embarkation process! We have sailed for over 30 years - on numerous cruise lines, some good some so-so. This was our first on RCCL -- alas, it will be our last as this may be the worst line we have ever sailed. The good: Embarkation was fine. This ship is well maintained and clean. The crew tries hard. The entertainment was good to fair. The public rooms were pleasant. The bad: Obviously RCCL is cutting corners. The ship is woefully understaffed, most noticeably in the food service areas. In the buffet, don't expect your table cleaned up or your beverage refilled. Instead one must hunt around for a clean table and make the best of it. They also dod away with wine stewards in the dining room -- now your serving staff is the wine steward. The cabins are small (140 sq ft) and suffer from 2 major design flaws. First the beds are too low preventing one from storing suitcases under the bed (you must find a place in the already undersized cabin to put them). Second there are no hooks anywhere in the cabin to hang things. Also do not expect any toiletries in the bathroom. You get one bar of soap and one bath and face towel for each person. There's a toiletry stand, and towel rack in the bathroom, but they're empty. Don't expect a pen or any writing paper or post cards in the cabin either. The dining experience in the buffet and dining room is uninspiring. In the buffet you get one plate, one knife and one fork (no tray) as you march down an overcrowded buffet line. The menu is always the same the standard breakfast and for lunch lots of chicken, a few poor cuts of beef, mashed potatoes and vegetables (don't expect any seafood, veal, or other creative dishes). If you desire salad or soup you must find a seat, put down your plate and return to the buffet line. If you lunch in the dining room, the menu never changes (a first for us). Dinner's pretty much the same. Cheap tableware and a bland menu. Again lots and lots of chicken, poor quality beef and maybe every 3rd day a fish entree, even the deserts are cheap. The only thing RCCL seems to be have fully staffed and be efficient at is hammering passengers for drinks, pictures, fake art, fake jewelry, bingo, etc. The announcements occur hourly reminding you when the next art auction or bingo is. It was a decidedly unpleasant experience. You're better off on Carnival (and that's saying something)! . Read Less

There are only three good things I can say about this ship..our waiter Sean, our room steward and the band Horizon. We were on this ship in April and it was below my expectations then. However, since we live in MD, we decided to try leaving out of Baltimore. Unfortunately, the only ship going was the Grandeur. I could not believe how the service, quality of food and condition of the ship had deteriorated more since April. Here is an overview. Boarding - not bad although the drop off procedure is pretty slow. Room - Safe was not working, dirt and stains (? hmmm) on chairs and couch. I would love to know who takes the brochure pics. Must use some kind of wide angle, optical enhancement device. Would love them to take a pic of my diamond ring so I can send to all my jealous friends. Dining - Food was nothing short of disgusting proven by the fact that I gained 1 lb (water weight) on this 9 day cruise. I believe you should be able to pierce your Caesar salad, not scoop it up and have the lettuce wrap around your fork. When I went off the menu and ordered a steak ( in an attempt to eat something good) my table guests thought it was a hamburger. Let me just say that for 8 dining days, I enjoyed white rolls and water. Dessert - was a good thing. This quality of food extended to the Windjammer. Hint...get your table first then get your food otherwise your lunch becomes dinner. There are never any tables available. The floor was always sticky, the warming dishes were not filled, coffee machines were out of service much of the time as were the juice machines. Dessert - was a good thing. Pool deck - Simply put...dirty. Ask the staff to wipe a table and you would think you asked for their kidney. They are rude and totally ignore requests. Also, just in case you are a smoker, (like me), I would suggest you bring your own ashtray. I figured out that there are 20 ashtrays to every 200 smoking guests. I have even seen people "stealing" an ashtray from someone's table when not looking. It was ugly. I think if I had my suitcase filled with those tin disposable things, I could have sold enough to pay for the cruise. Entertainment - The Palladium - My six year old granddaughter's dance recital had more talent. Need I say more? Tiny Tim (rest his sole)was a better singer than the so called professionals on stage. The band Horizon in the South Pacific lounge was enjoyable until they did their heavy metal set. This is when most of the over 60 crowd cleared out which basically left the room completely empty. The band in the Centrum were OK except that they projected themselves as having eaten bad Sushi. Maybe they too were just tired of smiling and having their picture taken. Cruise Director - WHO? We saw him a total of 12 minutes during the entire cruise. He appeared to introduce the shows for exactly 3 minutes each performance. During the last show, he informed everyone that this was his last cruise since his contract was up. Guess he figured why do anything for the nine days. What was RCCL going to do...fire him? Scheduled events never occurred with no explanation. Gee, and I was looking forward to the belly flop contest. Drinks - Normally, I do not drink because just one would have me crawling under a table singing the "Sponge Bob" song. However, I had 4 highballs in a row one night..what the heck...I needed to get happy. After the drinks...I could still re-apply my eyeliner. When I arrived home, I had one glass of cheap wine before dinner. Yep, I was singing the song. I also found out that my grandson found a place to put his gum. Go figure. Facilities - I have been in gas stations that had cleaner restrooms. Also, most times they were out of order. All those poor people who had their daily dose of prunes were pretty distressed. I think I already spoke about the over 60 crowd. I was amazed at how fast those scooters can really go. ATM - On the second day it was not working. Since I had not stopped at the bank before leaving to get cash for my secret casino mad money, I had planned on using it. I was told that I would have to use the ATM in Key West. Well...that was not working either. The bottom line? Total take from me by the casino - a grand total of nine quarters. Ports - Freeport - Pass by it...unless you enjoy riding in a cab and seeing nothing. Coco Cay - Good swimming and great beach. Too bad the food was gross. Thank goodness I brought some apples and bananas from the ship. Key West - nice but expensive. Lots of walking. Cozumel - Usual shopping and negotiating with the vendors. Senior Frogs was the highlight. OLAY OLAY The Cape - never got there. Captain decided to pass it by since we were just ahead of a storm. Sissy! We did the muster station thing didn't we? Overall - I will not sail on this RCCL ship ever again. It needs total renovation and a change of staff especially the chef. I considered RCCL a first class line until the Grandeur. Finally - Many of the "first time cruisers" that we met thought that the ship and everything that goes with it was outstanding. Those of us that have cruised a lot had a totally different opinion. If you are planning to cruise on this ship, I can only hope that you got a great price deal that just might justify overlooking our experience. Also, if you are a "sea lover" as I am and enjoy relaxing and gazing out over the beautiful blue ocean........BRING WINDEX. Read Less

My husband and I were first time cruisers with Royal Caribbean. We were truly looking forward to cruising with Royal Caribbean. We were scheduled to depart New Orleans on April 23, 2005, at 6:pm. for a 7-day cruise to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Costa Maya. Our cruise with the Grandeur of the Seas did not leave New Orleans port until 8:30pm on April 25, 2005, due to the Grandeur of Seas docking accident in Costa Maya. Because of this docking accident, our cruise was cut short by one port and two days. We were told that our ports of calls would be Key West and Cozumel. Why did we have to pay port charges for three ports when we only visited two? Also, due to the scheduling conflict, we were only allowed a short time in Key West (9am to 2pm - which actually turned into 10am to 1:30pm. We had such a short stay in Key West that we were unable to see many of the sights that Key West had to offer, not to mention that we didn't get the opportunity to visit the well-known "Mallory Dock" festivities. The day that Royal Caribbean promised us in Cozumel was fine, except that because of scheduling conflicts, we had to be tendered "like cattle" onto the island - really overstuffing the "poor little tender" to full capacity that there was no place to move. In fact, we were stuck on the tender on our return to the ship due to some kind of problem the Grandeur of the Seas had with their anchor. The tender kept going around the ship in a circle getting close to the side only periodically and then would pull away and proceed to circle the ship again. We stayed onboard the tender for approximately 2-1/2 hours waiting to board the ship. The next morning, at 9:15am we were awakened by the Captain of the Grandeur of the Seas apologizing over the PA system for the inconvenience we had experienced the night before. What we experienced with Royal Caribbean: 1) We were originally booked on the cruise that was to depart on April 30, 2005 for the Western Caribbean. Shortly thereafter, we were told that the ports of call had been changed and the Grandeur of the Seas was scheduled for "Repositioning" and would be touring the Eastern Caribbean and its final destination would be Puerto Rico. To compensate us for the inconvenience of rescheduling, Royal Caribbean informed our travel agency that we would receive $100 per stateroom shipboard credit. To date, we still have not received that credit. 2) We lost 28.57% of our cruise, yet we paid the full fare. Yes, we know we were offered a total refund (minus the $100 stateroom credit mentioned in #1). Royal Caribbean had that take it or leave it attitude. Canceling might have worked for some of the passengers, especially for those out of town, but for my husband, this was his one shot at vacation. Due to work constraints, rescheduling his vacation would not be received well by his boss and his clients. 3) Because of the docking accident and departure delay, we were given a $300 per cabin Guest Satisfaction shipboard credit and were told it was a "use or lose" credit. So, in order not to lose the shipboard credit, my husband and I decided to use the credit to upgrade to a balcony. We arrived early (1:30pm), and after boarding the ship we proceeded to wait in an extremely long line at the Purser's/Guest Relations desk to see if we could upgrade to a balcony. After trying to communicate with a clerk at the Purser's desk who didn't speak English very well, we did upgrade for $200 to a balcony. We arrived in the room and the room was hot and the covers for the air conditioning vents were on the floor. We called the Purser's desk and they sent a repairman. The repairman said they had problems from the previous cruise and were trying to fix the problem. We then went back to the Purser's desk and told them of our concern and after a long wait we were moved to another cabin with a balcony. When we arrived and were finally settling in and checking out our cabin, I found a black pair of women's worn panties stuffed in one of the cabinets. This was rather disgusting. I proceeded to remove the panties with a hand towel and placed them in the hall and informed one of the Stewards that I saw in the hall of the incident. The time was now 7:30pm. We were concerned about our luggage but were assured by our Room Steward and the Purser that our luggage would be delivered to our new room. At 11:pm we went to our cabin, no luggage. We went searching for our luggage and found them placed outside our original cabin door. With no one in sight to help us, we moved our bags on our own. We also did not receive our initiation to the "Meet and Mingle" which we were told by the Purser's desk that - any mail that was sent to our original room would be forwarded to our new room. I would like Royal Caribbean to explain: why the previous week's cruise received such "royal" treatment for their troubles and we were treated like "take it or leave it": They received 2 more days onboard the ship (free) - or you might say on us., 2 days of complimentary liquor or soft drinks., 2 days free internet., 2 more days in Costa Maya with paid shore excursions., and $250 shipboard credit, plus a choice to fly home instead of staying in Costa Maya. For us, there were no slot tournaments because it wasn't a 7-day cruise - what difference did that make? We were bored on Tuesday (it was raining) and we were looking for something to do. Finally, the last day onboard - after we had passed out all of our gratuity vouchers the night before, our breakfast server was extremely rude or maybe tired. My husband got up from his seat to get the table some coffee - because after sitting there patiently for our server (any server) we finally all decided to do it for ourselves. When our server finally showed up, she seemed extremely upset with us and was rude in accepting our breakfast request - we were told we could only get one type of omelet - and that was it - ham and cheese or plain eggs. No rolls, breads, pastries, etc. were offered to our table. I don't mean to be petty, but these things should be a given not a request - especially since we paid for 7 days of food and only received 5. So there you go, that's my experience with Royal Caribbean. I would like to plan another cruise to Hawaii and one to Alaska within the next two years. Can anyone give me one good reason I should plan to book these cruises with Royal Caribbean? Sincerely and thanks for caring. Read Less

My wife and I were part of the cruise that started from hell and went down. Our ship was delayed over 2 days from arriving in port(accident at sea) and we waited for 48 hours before anyone with the company could give us a day and time of departure. The time to embark went quick but only because we had to pre-board at the Hyatt on Sunday afternoon. Once we were in the building it took less than 5 minutes to get on the ship. Now the fun starts, due to some cancelations we knew we could upgrade from a outside cabin to a balcony(just ask as in past cruises). Nope, they wanted to charge us $200 or essentially take back some of the ship board credit they gave us for the up front disaster. CLASS-LESS. the food and service was excellent. To say the least, we were surprised as to this point everything was going down the toilet fast. The entertainment was good not great but the CD was the best I've seen in my years of cruising Our ports of call were messed up and we went to Key West and Cozumel rather than Grand Caymans and Costa Maya. Once again a disaster, in Cozumel we had to tender in and that was awful. It took 1 hour in line to travel less than 150 yards. Due to us arriving at an unscheduled time the pier was full and the tenders were used by local merchants who allowed their vendors to come on board and peddle their crap. CLASSLESS. Key West was fair to poor(rained the entire 5 hours we were there) The Captain would of been better off going south at sea and got us in an additional day of sun. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Royal Caribbean as yet to answer a 12 day e-mail or a letter trying to get me a refund. This was my 6th cruise with them and by far the biggest rip-off I've ever had. Future travelers with RC need to be aware that issued like mind are nightmares and If given the chance in the future, you need to cancel if a ship has a delay or change in itinerary. Read Less
