we chose this ship and cruise because family and friends were going. We have never cruised before, so we were first time cruisers and were real excited to finally go on one. This boat first of all was in need of a refresh - torn upholstery everywhere, dated furnishings in the staterooms, not clean, food preparation did not include HEAT (everything served lukewarm and not hot or fresh). Could not find a decent cup of coffee anywhere, always running out of fresh fruit and vegetables, very limited activites on board, extended periods of time on the water - very little time at ports (limited to 10am - 4pm at port), port stops cancelled at last minute with no options for on board activities, waaay to many really drunk people, a lot of elderly people falling down and accidents (was very sad to see and watch). We will never never never go on a cruise with this line again - despite the complaints and efforts to point out blatant safety violations around the ship. This was a floating crappy boat and believe me you do not want to get stuck on it for ANY length of time. Read Less

To say this ship was a huge disappointment is an understatement. First I will start with the pros as there were a few. Chelsea O' Toole at the spa was amazing. Super sweet and went out of her way to help us relax. Next was our awesome stateroom attendant, Remmy. He was incredibly attentive to every detail and did whatever it took to put a smile on my daughter's face. Finally, Chops was an amazing experience as always! The food is always superb. Now onto the cons. The ship is old and very outdated. Our room was huge. 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, living room, and closet. It was dingy though. Very out dated and noisy. We were under the pool area and you can hear everything. The room also creaks 24/7 when moving. The tv plays about 2 episodes of 6 different shows on repeat the whole cruise. Great! You don't plan on spending any time in your room? Well, if you have a toddler under 3, rethink that. We were under the impression they would have a day care area and toddler play area. This ship lacks that. There is a TINY (think a little larger than a closet) space dedicated for babies under 3. The larger child area isn't much bigger. Also, trust me when I say there isn't an arcade on board. I think there are 6 machines in all, of which 4 are claw type machines for you to try and win trinkets. Getting back to the day care area. Because it's so small, you are limited to 10 hours of child care per family per cruise. If you do the math on a 9 night cruise, that's not much. Plus there's no toys for babies who are around 2. They do have 10 different toy bags you can check out for kids under 3 years, but only 2 are really geared towards kids between 2 and 3. Next the food is horrible (except for Chops). We honestly stayed hungry most of the cruise, which is sad because we usually love Royal Caribbean's food. It had no taste. We were told by one of the chefs that they had to "tone down" the food due to the older cruisers on board. I'm assuming because it's a smaller ship they don't have a way to accommodate every one's tastes. The smaller size must also account for the fact that many times room service is unavailable or takes a long time to answer. Finally, there is no Aerial Spectacular Centrum Show any more. It is still being advertised, but they lost the contract. This is one of the main things drawing us to these ships. It's ironic that when you watch the NextCruise channel on board, it still advertises the centrum shows for the Grandeur of the Seas. So in summary if you are older and traveling without kids, this is the perfect cruise for you. If you're traveling with kids, look for another ship. Read Less

We choose this cruise because it left from Baltimore an easy 3 hour drive from Northeastern New Jersey. This was our third departure from Baltimore and it took less than one from hour from the parking lot to our cabin The ship is old and in need of a makeup, our cabin had old and scratched furniture and the mattress in the third bed left me with bad back. The age of the ship is evident although the crew does a great job in keeping it clean. We ate diner in the main dining room and while the quality was good there was little variety[to save money and force you into the for fee venues].The additional charge of $25.00 to $35.00 for filet mignon,Lobster or Surf & Turf was ridiculous.Only during the last 2 nites a special was offered for $8.00 for a Fillet Mignon and a glass of wine and it was good.Breakfast and lunch in the Windjamer Cafe was OK. Entertainment was good, specially the excellent Tango Show.Activities were almost non existing specially when we had the final 3 days at sea with nothing to do and a Cruise Director that came on the ship during our stop in Nassau and lacked energy.By contrast the first cruise director "Tornado from England"was energetic and great singer. The service was excellent in the cabin, the dining room and the Windjamer Cafe. The front desk was terrible specially the woman from Mauritus who acted like she was a supervisor [but when I asked another front desk employee to speak to a supervisor I was told that all of them are supervisors].I was charged for the use of a bottle of water when I tried to rinse my face and the water was cut off .Also when our daughter had to leave the ship in Orlando they made wait a long time and she almost missed her flight back home[Only when The Cruise Director "Tornado from England" got involved our daughter was able to disembark after paying $300.00 for a fee.The rep from the Crown & Anchor Society couldn`t help us either [she was busy selling future cruises] and got back to us. The ports were another sore point, Charleston is OK if you are interested into history and Colonial Buildings and also easy to visit [just walk off the ship and you are there].Pt Canaveral is OK too we went to Cocoa Beach [$13.00 with Uber] and went to the beach after the rain.Nassau was OK too,in the AM we walked to the main street where all the stores are and in the afternoon we walked to the beach.Freeport should be dropped as a port of call as it was damaged by a storm in October of 2016 and most oft he Resorts Beaches aren`t available, the taxis are in bad condition and the shopping was bad too.The ship didin`t stop at Cocoa Key [not safe for tendering] and it seems that they haven`t stopped here in a while.Royal Caribbean should tell the public that this stop is almost never made and skip Freeport . I am also surprised by the number of good reviews our cruise got as most of the passengers on this cruise were experienced cruisers. Read Less

Choose cruise to be with family! Unfortunately, we all made a terrible choice of ship and cruise line. 12 days of toilets flushing "sometimes", terrible food and nothing to do while at sea was worst experience. We have cruised 15+ times but only twice on RC. Never Again!! This ship needs to be retired! The staff could care less in responding to requests. Note, these are the opinions of family members. From being told NO numerous times by Guest Services to cold cereal all over the carpeting and filth being left in stateroom upon being told staterooms were ready! We had great difficulty contacting concierge in tiny loung by phone or personally during hrs. Supposedly on duty. The DR staff was nice but food horrible. The best choice was cold soups which we took advantage of. Serve yourself Windjammer food was casseroles or fried-we ate salad for 12 days!! RC has made huge mistake in no longer supplying simple things for suite guests and other guests: paper and pen in room, robes, water ( a staple of life made very expensive on ship) phones with message lights, poor entertainment, no informations on ports Except Shopping! They say word of mouth is the best recommendation, unfortunately, our recommendation of Grandeur and RC in general will not encourage anyone to sail with with RC again!! Read Less

Since a friend who cruises with us says I am too negative, here are the good points 1. Our cabin steward Chris was Fantastic, He was undoubtedly the hardest working person on the ship. Any requests we made were promptly responded to, and he seemed to be always available. 2. Most of the staff were fairly helpful and pleasant to deal with. Now the rest of the story. The ship is just too old and really too small for a long (12 day cruise). My wife and I have done 18 cruises, 14 on RCI. We have been on the larger ships and they seem to have more to do and venues to do it in. Food - In a word food in the main dining room and the windjammer is, in word, AWFUL. It was lacking in variety, taste and and presentation. It was for the most part, indelible. I understand that the quality of the food on RCI has been in decline for some time, but this is the worst I have ever had on any cruise. Gone in the MDR are the lamb chops, the duck, and decent fish dish of any type. The only really good meals our group had were in the three speciality restaurants, viz Chops, Giovanni's and Azumi. Those meals, along with the service were excellent. Even though we paid a hefty price for the cruise, it seems that RC wants to squeeze even more dough from the passengers by forcing them to pay additional to get any sort of decent food. Embarkation and debarkation were ok, although apparently in Baltimore, the normal gangway entrance has been out of commission for some time, thus requiring a lot of walking to a a single pier level entrance. Once aboard, the was a jam up at the only elevators on level one that some people were waiting up to 45 minutes to get upstairs. Our travel agent had upgraded us to a junior suite, which was ok, but an unusual feature was a pole in the middle of the room. Could not figure out what its function was. The ports were ok, although we did not get off in ST Thomas because you had to tender and my wife and others in our party have physical issues which makes this difficult. By the way this the first time that we have ever had to do this in ST Thomas. The two shore excursions in Barbados and St Kitts. They were ok, although the buses used were not particularly comfortable. The entertainment was fairly good, especially, the young singer with his las vegas show, the comedian from gregg?, and the old 60's group. Overall, I did not think this cruise was a good value for the money. Th ship is old and too small, and spending several days in cold weather and rocky seas does not appeal to me. Read Less

First of all, let me state that the crew, food, room and general amenities of the ship were all very good. However, the cruise itinerary was not what it should have been. The cruise was a 5 day from Baltimore to Bermuda. Understandably Royal Caribbean cannot control the weather. However, they can inform, explain, and give options to their customers. They do not do this. The ship left the port an hour earlier, because according to the Captain, the coast guard was going to close the Chesapeake Bay. If this was so, why not give the customers the option of leaving the ship as opposed to taking them out to very bad ocean conditions ? 24 hours of rocking and rolling and half of the guests and crew were sea sick we finally docked in Bayonne NJ. So Bermuda turned into New York City. I have researched and the cruise the week before mine and the week after mine had the same trip. Royal Caribbean states they cannot control hurricane conditions - but they made the most of 3 cruises going only to NYC. They could have cancelled the cruise and spared the people on board a lot of sickness and anxiety. Instead they took them on a very rough ride and disappointing destination. They offered a "certificate" for a future cruise that excludes "port and taxes" which is roughly 70% of the original fee. Because the deception of misleading those on board - to believe this was not planned but happenstance - I have lost trust in Royal Caribbean. I imagine others feel the same, so the offer is not as generous as it seems. I will never cruise Royal Caribbean again. Read Less

We opted for this ship, cause the reviews where mostly mixed, half good and half not so good, but it felt like the not happy people where over expecting. I don't believe that anymore. The ship opted to not go to Bermuda before it even left port, it informed the travel agents, but not any of the guests. If you didn't use a travel agent, you where not told till 10pm that you where going to an unknown destination that would be announced at 8:30am the next day. The promise was a Canadian or New England Port. But we only took Bermuda weathered clothing. Many people broke bones that night, due to falling down stairs because of the rocking of the waves (the stairs where roped off limits eventually), and we were not able to stay in bed due to the rocking! We felt we needed seat belts!(bring your own hammock) Many of the ceiling panels of the ship broke and it was raining inside the ship in countless locations, on decks the water had no business even getting down onto. The dining service in the great Gatsby was lacking. It took several attempts to get drinks, and after we had them, they refused to supply any lemons for the iced tea until we spoke to a manager. The food was served cold, and the French fries where raw. The spa and indoor pools and hot tubs had to be closed due to flooding (this is the area the ceiling crashed in) but my wife did receive an excellent massage early before that happened. The water was not staying down in the sink and shower drains, but kept shooting up out of them, due to the degree the ship was rocking. The next morning, we where unable to eat, due to the large number of people puking in the windjammer (buffet). At 8:30 we where told they still had no idea where we where going, and another announcement at 10:30 said the same. We had lunch at Izumi's and that was excellent, the employees there where very nice, even though they where sick also, they did a good job. At around 11:30 I noticed the ship changed direction and was headed straight to NYC. We finally got an announcement that we where headed to NJ at 2:30pm. We where docking there because the ship was unable to go anywhere else due to it's engines not being powerful enough to make it north. Dinner at Giovanni's wasn't very good. The pasta was almost raw, the crab seemed to come canned and was pretty disgusting, the steak tasted like it was left out too long, and absorbed the flavors of something else it was around, and overcooked. The French fries here where excellent though. I do hope the cause of this was the normal cook staff was too sick. By this point, with over half the ship closed due to being flooded and having water intake issues, the doors that where leaking huge amounts of water in from outside, the missing ceiling panels. Most of the entertainment had to be canceled. Also since we didn't make it to any ports, all on-board shopping had to be canceled. We left the ship after the second day, so we didn't get to try Chop's. We had ordered the Voom Surf WIFI package, but was unable to use it, due to it's choppy in and out reliability. Latency was around 900ms, extremely high, for satellite based internet. It was mostly usable for accessing websites, but nothing else. I kept having intermittent security warnings that something was intercepting my https traffic. It also blocked 100% of udp traffic, and openvpn. It would allow anyconnect vpn to function, but kept getting kicked off it due to the and was unable to maintain a stable connection to do any work. The soda package wasn't too useful. We could only locate one soda machine that wasn't inside the windjammer (usable when windjammer was closed). This machine was limited due to service issues and had a broken sign located on it stating limited selections available. Often the machines where completely empty of any kind of beverage, and I had to wait hours till someone would refill them. Read Less

This was the worst holiday we have ever experienced. The advertised cruise was for Bermuda however due to Hurricane Matthew it ended up cruising to New York. Obviously safety is the main priority and the bad weather is beyond the control of Royal Caribbean, however we felt that we were not kept informed of what was happening. We contacted Royal Caribbean prior to the cruise as we were aware of the hurricane however we were told the cruise would still be going ahead. We were not given any opportunity to change or cancel prior to sailing - as this was part of an extended holiday we already had a trip to New York booked and had no wish to visit twice. Whilst the change in destination was frustrating and not what we had chosen we understand the reasons behind it - however what we did not accept was the quality of the ship. We decided to leave the ship after 2 nights on board when we docked (as did many others) due to feeling unsafe on board. We had a balcony room and water was pouring in through the balcony doors on the first night - leaving the carpet soaked in water we believe this had happened in every room with balcony doors. There was also water pouring into the main area of the ship and running through all the electrics - leaving us feeling unsafe on board. There were large areas on board cordoned off due to water leaking in. Bins were placed everywhere to catch water. What we also found unacceptable was the fact that most of the ship was closed due to bad weather. This left everyone confined to either the rooms or the dining room. There needs to provisions made for adverse weather. Everyone on board had paid a lot of money for their holiday and therefore expect that there may be something to do whatever the weather - outdoor areas obviously need to be closed but the fitness centre and spa were also shut. We requested complimentary Wi-Fi partly for something to do due to most of the ship being closed but also so we could research the port of New York (we had extensively researched Bermuda but obviously were not told of the change in destination till after we had set sail) but were told this would not be possible even at a discounted rate - we ended up having to pay $17 for 24hrs access something we find very unfair. Added to this was there was a very limited amount of TV channels, the ones we did have seemed to be the same programmes on a loop and were difficult to watch as there was very poor signal a lot of the time even when docked in port. We also found that the food was of very poor quality. Some of which was almost inedible. I cannot understand how it could even be served on a cruise ship. On night two we ordered room service as we could not face the dining room again - the meal we received was completely inedible. We were told it would be 30-50minutes and ended up waiting 1.5hrs. When we requested to leave the ship we feel we were not assisted and there was no apology - no one even asked us why were leaving or made any effort to try and rectify the situation. We told a member of staff at guest services that we would be leaving in the morning he took our names but did not explain any of the procedure for leaving the ship. When we tried to leave the next morning we were not allowed to leave initially no reason was given - we then discovered we needed to go through customs and go to guest services to get a pass to leave - none of which was explained to us the night before. Staff were also very unhelpful in the morning and we were told that if we hadn't left by 10am the customs officer was leaving and we would then be trapped on the ship. The whole time on board was below standard and a very unpleasant experience. We feel the money we paid for this cruise was not reflected in the service we received. When we returned home we asked for a full refund which was denied. Customer services were very unhelpful and there was no possible way of speaking to a manager. We did receive a voucher for £1031 each and although we were wary about going on another Royal Caribbean cruise we thought as it was free we would try booking another cruise - however when we tried booking we were told we would have to pay the £150 deposit ourselves - I do not understand this as the whole cruise will cost less than the voucher amount. When I tried to dispute this I have once again come up against a brick wall and it is not possible to speak to a manager. I know £150 is not a lot for a cruise but on principle I do not want to give this company another penny, especially if we risk this 2nd cruise being anywhere near as bad as the 1st! Read Less

I am sure that several of the passengers on this cruise have written a review due to the terrible weather we suffered through, but I felt that I also had additional incidents that needed to be shared as well. This was my first time on Royal Caribbean. I have only traveled on Carnival and have enjoyed it very much! I was told that Royal was a better company but I did not find that on my vacation. As a person with OCD, I called Royal's customer service line several times prior to departure due to my worry about the weather conditions. At not time, was I told the trip was cancelled or that the destinations would be changed. The day of departure we arrived at 1:45 because we have dogs that needed to be dropped off for care. As we entered the building three people yelled down to each other until reaching the man at the door to "lock the doors at 2:00 no matter what". I asked the person checking in if an email was sent about the early departure. I was given a generic explanation that they were just told the Bay was being closed and we needed to leave early. While we settled on the ship after an hour or two, we were told by the captain that we would be changing our course and heading to Boston or Canada. We were told we would get a 50% discount towards another cruise (which I now know means it does not include taxes or port fees). I was not happy because we were packed for warm weather and not cold. They must have known this was going to happen but did feel that they needed to tell any of the paying customers ahead of time. When we got to dinner in the Great Gatsby, I was not impressed with the meal options like I have seen on Carnival. It was even worse when my food arrived and I found a hair (looked like a pubic hair) in my food. The staff apologized but nothing otherwise was done about it. If that didn't make me sick enough, the boat started really rocking. My husband and I were located at the tip of the boat in an inside cabin and felt as thought we were going to die! The whole night was filled with a rocking boat, cabinets slamming open and shut, and both of us rushing to the bathroom. This lasted until the third morning of the cruise when they finally decided to dock us in Jersey!!!!! We also were not able to use any of the pools, hot tubs, or food are located by the indoor pool. Such as small ship offers nothing else since the casino was also closed since we were docked. Over a hundred people got off the cruise in Jersey, but we stuck with it. We asked twice to be moved to another location so that we could feel more comfortable due to the illness. We were told the rooms that people left we damaged. I have a hard time believing that is true. I would have thought they would have wanted to make the people that stayed on board more comfortable, but no. Overall, I feel that the Royal Caribbean staff did not take in account the safety of the people on the ship probably because they did not want to refund 150% of the money to people. Even if they did not know how bad the weather could get, they had to know the quality of enjoyment for the people on the ship would change due to rocky weather on a small boat that does not have a lot of ammenities. The 100% refund does not include taxes or port fees so you not only had to survive that terrible trip, but now you also have to pay even more money out of your pocket if you want to risk your life again with Royal. Think twice about traveling with them. Carnival's ship out of Baltimore has more things to do and the food is def. better (and I never found a hair on their). BTW - I called and shared about the hair in the food and that I was not given a room change and I was offered a bottle of wine and chocolates. That really doesn't help when my husband and I get the drink package and I am trying to get pregnant. It wouldn't hurt them to give an on board credit or give me the money back that I actually paid. We ended up in new jersey for $5k think before you go - royal carribean will blame you if you decide to go during hurricane season and the route gets changed. lack of honesty on conditions to passengers and route destinations, very unsafe areas, ship is very old and run down, spa area was leaking extremely bad from rain, entertainment and shows impacted because stage area was wet, doors openly and slamming all night, people falling, pool ceiling collapsed, hall ways closed, lights leaking on deck 8 from flooding on deck 9, took two days to go from baltimore to new jersey. our only cruise and will never go back!! No guarantee of reimbursement even if they don't take you to a comparable destination!!!! the anniversary cruise of a lifetime was one of the worst experiences of my life - doors in cabins flying open so bad my family had to our luggage in front of them, water everywhere, safety cones, and leaking lights, we didn't get to see anything first two days we were in our cabin sick. Kids were stressed - not a vacation at all!! if you leave the ship - your on your own they don't offer transportation or assistance to get you back to your car at all. Read Less
