This was our second Viking River Cruise. Service was up to Viking's high standards. Meals were good. Entertainment/Tour Director Mary Anne was fantastic and a real character. The tours at each port were usually very good with knowledgeable guides and interesting sites. Kinderdijk, Melk Abbey, Bamberg, Vienna, Marksburg castle, and the Budapest night cruise up and down the river were highlights. Each small town had its own ambience and feel. Tour radios worked better this time as bugs had been worked out compared to our last cruise when they were new. Cruise was more on the relaxing side as this 15 day cruise had a lot of water to cover, i.e. more cruising than a shorter trip. Ship typically went up river while we were bused to tour sites and back to ship. We did not have any river problems with water levels or lock problems and there were about 70 of them! Ship was in excellent condition. Only ship issue we had was upper deck was closed most of the time due to all of the low bridges. Entertainment (lounge singers) was average in my opinion. Embarkation had a small issue as dock was changed in Amsterdam. We walked to the dock Viking said we would use prior to leaving home and it had been moved from dock closest to train station (10 minute walk) to one farthest away (30 minutes). Train stop was nearby but we were unaware of that. This was not Viking's fault. I recommend staying in Amsterdam 2-3 days before or after your cruise. Viking does only a short bus tour and more time is needed for this interesting city. Read Less

My closest friend and his wife signed up for the cruise and recommended it to us as they had sailed on two previous Viking river cruises and enjoyed them very much. I especially liked the fact that, if I had to return to my cabin, it was always no more than a minute away instead of 10-15 minutes. The smaller ship size and number of passengers made for a more personal, intimate traveling experience. What impressed me the most (and, from the talk heard in the dining room and on the excursions, it would seem, all of the rest of the passengers) was the tremendous effort, energy, and--above all--enthusiasm that the cruise "Activities Coordinator" (I am not sure of his exact title) demonstrated day after day in carrying out the duties of his position. While I cannot recall his full name at present, I do recall that he was of British extraction and that his first name was Kean (Kane? Caine?). While my wife and I and the other three couples we traveled with on this cruise all enjoyed the excursions, meals, entertainment, and service experienced on this Viking tour, we all agreed that, more than any other single factor, the "Activities Coordinator" or "Cruise Director" was the most important factor in making the "Tulips and Windmills" cruise a memorable one, indeed. He was worth his weight in gold! Read Less

This was our first viking river cruise, but we hope it not to be our last! What a wonderful trip, my husband is a bilateral amputee, so the size of the ship and ease of the tours was just perfect for us. On a regular cruise ship it would take 30 to 60 minutes to get off the ship from our stateroom, (at least for us), but it took us 10 minutes to get from out stateroom and on the tour bus that was parked right outside the ships' dock. We loved having included tours as well as optional tours. The staff was so wonderful, and food was fabulous. We were in the minority of first time cruisers, which we certainly could understand after the trip was over. We are also looking into an ocean cruise to explore as well. Keep up the great job Viking! I chose this cruise because we had friends that were doing the same one and I wanted to do it with them. Also, I love Amsterdam and this tour gave us a day and a half in the beginning and a day and a half in the end. We were able to tour the town on our own and visit the Anne Frank House without pre-purchasing our tickets. The tour director was fantastic and made sure that everything was done as it should. The Home-Hosted Visit in Hoorn was interesting as you really got a flavor of the people. I have cruised with Viking before and the service was beyond wonderful. The cabins were nicely decorated and relaxing and having a balcony was an added bonus. I know you don't spend much time in the room but when you do, you want to relax. It is also a nice cruise line because you do not find children on board which can put a kink in traveling. Read Less

We were able to sign up for it and the bonus was we had a balcony. This itinerary was perfect because it gave us two days in Amsterdam a city I was wanting to spend more time in. As we arrived at the ship, we were surprised to hear the voice of Maryanne, the tour director of our first cruise. She was so much fun and organized. The cities we visited were beautiful and interesting. On one tour, we were able to have coffee and treats with an inhabitant of the city. I would have to say this was the highlight of the trip. Also the garden in Amsterdam was so pretty with all the flowers in bloom. Read Less

Chose this cruise because we enjoy Viking. We took an earlier Viking cruise that ended in Amsterdam, but we flew out the morning we disembarked. i' was eager to experience Amsterdam. We loved the tour of Amsterdam and were able to spend our free time in the Rijksmuseum. The shore excursions were excellent--the right amount of activity--also very knowledgable guides. We enjoyed learning about the history of the countries we visited. Visiting sites related to World War II was moving. Dining on the ship was an delightful experience. The food an wine were exceptional. We appreciated the buffet lunch option. The waiters were efficient and gracious. The whole staff were friendly and capable. Our day in Bruges was interesting and informative. We also enjoyed our trip to the pepper farm. Most exciting however, and the real highlight of the trip was the day we spend in the Kirkenhof Garden--the tulips provided an incredible kalidescope of color and beauty. Read Less

First time in Europe. Wanted to see medieval Europe. We were not disappointed. Amsterdam and it's canals was beautiful. Never saw so many bicycles in my life. Netherlands windmills were fascinating. All the Rhine River ports in Germany were amazing. Town after town a thousand years old and spectacular cathedrals. Bamberg was probably our favorite. It was not a bombing target during WW II and is mostly original. The stretch of the Danube after leaving Vienna for Budapest is beautiful. It would have been better on a warmer day--it was too cold to spend much time on the Sun deck. The included shore excursions at every port were very interesting with excellent local guides speaking understandable English. The wireless headsets provided by Viking allowed great freedom to roam a short distance from the guide while hearing every word. And most of the guides were very knowledgeable providing a non-stop narrative about their city. The Viking Bragi is a marvelous boat. Dining is a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the option to eat more casually in the Lounge, or outdoors on the Aquavit Terrace when the temperature was warm enough. Not much to do on board compared to an ocean cruise, but the Viking emphasis is on the ports you visit, not the ship. Local entertainment was in the Lounge on several evenings. Overall experience was excellent and I would not hesitate to do another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

Everything was excellent....food, service, shore excursions, staff.....could not fault it. Would have no hesitation cruising with this company again.....they do do it well! Great ports, although our two days in Vienna were continuous rain, which put a dampener on things (excuse the pun). In 14 days, not one meal on the meal was repeated the menu and there was a fabulous selection of wines from all around the world. The weather at this time of year was a little cool, and wet in some ports. On one occasion, the temperature was 0-8 celcius for the day. Rug up!! We did have the threat of having to change ships due to low water, but luckily for us, we did not have to. Every other ship we spoke to had to change. Read Less

The Cruise director was great providing a lot of local history and the rest of the crew was very helpful. the daily tours offered a great opportunity to experience the local culture in both small villages and large cities. The included tours were a great value and the special tours provided a great opportunity to see more historical sites. All the guides were first rate, especially the Nuremberg WW II tour guide. Our stateroom was comfortable with plenty of room for storage but wespent most of our time on the upper decks or on tours. We started the tour in Prague with motor coach transfer to Budapest. Cabins were a bit small but it was a river cruise. Bathrooms were very well designed to maximize space. The food and service were outstanding. Liked that the food and wine were based on local cuisine. The German theme night was very good. The included tours were wonderful with the right amount of time and information to go back and explore more on our own. Although the river water level was low in places, we did not have to change boats. Viking used buses in a few places to get us to there before the boat giving us more time in port. They did an exceptional job of maximizing an itinerary that included larger towns and smaller villages to give us an interesting view of Europe. Would definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

Going on a River Cruise was on our bucket list and Viking appealed to us. We flew into Budapest a couple of days early and met family there and toured around on our own. Budapest is a beautiful place that I never would have thought of visiting. So glad this is where our Viking Cruise started. Our family left us and went on their way and we boarded the Bragi. Viking was so congenial and allowed us to board early. We were able to tour around the ship and get a bite to eat until our cabin was ready. The ship was so pretty and everyone was so friendly. Our cabin was small, but that is not a problem because we were not in our cabin that much. We were out on shore excursions or in the dining area or on the terrace or bar. Our cabin stewardess was so sweet and she kept everything so nice. The food was excellent and our servers were the very best. We met some awesome people on our cruise and always looked forward to meeting up with everyone for meals to visit and share our days. The shore excursions were so educational and we learned so much. All of the foods we tried were delicious. Debarkation went smoothly. We stayed one extra night in Amsterdam and were able to see the VanGogh museum and the Anne Frank House (2 things we did not want to miss while there). Loved the smaller size of the ship and fewer guests on board. Made the experience more intimate. We loved this Viking River cruise and have planned a Viking Ocean cruise in 2018. Read Less

We were invited to cruise with Fonda's cousin and his wife, Russell and Ramona Jones. So, so glad we accepted!! Wonderful time getting to see Europe from the rivers. Castles were a unique experience. Acquired new knowledge of the how's, why's, and wherefores of medieval living. Saw many churches and cathedrals with much history presented. Lovely religious relics including stained glass windows, pipe organs, and statues. The daily land tours presented plenty of experiences to "gawk" at the old-world buildings that are so picturesque. Walking on all the lovely, though uneven, cobblestone, was an adventure in itself. The food on board was of the finest locally grown available. The variety of wines was awesome! Served daily with lunch and dinner provided us with the opportunity to try both whites and reds. If wine wasn't to your taste, the bar was very well stocked to give you pretty much any kind of mixed drink you could want. The staff went above and beyond anything we had ever experienced. How wonderful to come in, ready for bed, only to find your room cleaned and restocked again AND I loved having my nightgown laying in wait for me. Ahh, what luxury!! Read Less

Our travel agent took care of our demands to the TEE! The only thing we hated was the trip over and back!!! ALL NIGHT!!! YUCK! The security was a pain in the BUTT, but we knew it was worth it! When VIKING got hold of us, everything was PERFECT! The SHip was nice and new and clean and the personnel were the BEST! Our Cabin wasn't the Taj MAHAL , but was Fine! THe food was the BEST, not like on a cruise on the Caribbean , but very, very good! Our stateroom was comfortable and always clean and orderly. The entertainment provided was wonderful. I liked that the guests were in our age bracket so we had a common ground of life experiences to start conversations and get to know each other. There was so much to enjoy that I'm sure we missed something! Good thing the majority of shore excursions required walking because the food was plentiful and delicious. The included and optional shore excursions were the history, art & architecture types that we love. All of our guides were very fluent in English and knew their topics well. We found the nightly newsletters of the next days events with suggestions for alternate activities invaluable. The booklet of the trips itinerary etc. sent ahead of the cruise was also invaluable. From Ads on TV we caught the "bug". Then since my father served in WWii and was in Budapest, I had two bridge pictures to find. The concerge at Hilton Castle Wall was very helpful and we were pleased to find our ship docked between the two bridges. We chose to spend a few extra days in Budapest, and could have spent the entire time exploring the Castle Wall, especially how Hilton incorporated into wall. Our view from room was directly across Danube from Parliament and there is no bad time to look out at that. The Viking crew at hotel was wonderful and our embarkation was smooth as silk. The Bragi had a wonderful crew and our stateroom was great (this is good because we were comparing against the Hilton). In a nut shell - our program director was fantastic. The dining was exquisite and entertainment was FUN! I would make ONE suggestion. Let clients know in advance that you offer fantastic shore excursions that can be booked through you. We did some outside tours and they did not compare at all to Viking tours. The quiet boxes were so nice and very easy to use. Our trip included a ship transfer due to high water and the only inconvenience was packing our bags. We got off Bragi for shore tour, had lunch on the town - how Viking manages to find places on short notice to feed that many people so pleasantly is a mystery. After our tour we bused back to Skadi and felt like something was askew...the lobby, halls, our room --- we were on the same ship! Instead of a disaster, we actually got to see a little more of the area than on shipboard and got to visit a place we would not have seen. We did not have children and there were none on our cruise - don't consider teenager as child. She actually smiled and interacted with others and seemed to enjoy. We are looking forward to going again, and it will be another Viking River Cruise. Wish Viking would find a way to do North American (USA, Canada, Alaska) cruises. My suggestion to all - get trip insurance. As result of health issue we had to cancel and even that was a pleasant experience. One year later and WOW. Most on our ship were in the 50 to 70 range, with one 94 year old...who walked barefoot on cobblestone street... Read Less

There was lots of variety to choose from. The waiters were very attentive and fun loving. We enjoyed all of the excursions. They were all efficiently handled. Guides were very informative. We learned many things about Holland that we did not know before. We really enjoyed the coffee and pie with the family in Hoorn, Netherlands. Some complained about walking but we thought all of the walks were enjoyable walks for a couple in their late 70s. The highlight for us was touring the Keukenhof Tulip gardens. In spite of the rain the gardens were spectacular. We even did several scenic walks on our own which we enjoyed. The only negative was there were so many great excursions offered at the same time to choose from, so we had to make some hard choices which meant we missed some excursions we would like to have gone on. We would recommend Viking for a river cruise. We also appreciated the help at the airport upon arrival to Amsterdam.
