We chose this cruise because of the length,15 days and the number of places we would get to visit, 4 countries. I would love to do it again. There was so much to enjoy that I'm sure we missed something! Good thing the majority of shore excursions required walking because the food was plentiful and delicious. The included and optional shore excursions were the history, art & architecture types that we love. All of our guides were very fluent in English and knew their topics well. We found the nightly newsletters of the next days events with suggestions for alternate activities invaluable. The booklet of the trips itinerary etc. sent ahead of the cruise was also invaluable. Wonderful crew that made the transition to another ship for the passengers, required due to high water, as smooth as silk. Viking arranged our air travel and transfers which saved me a lot of heartburn. I do wish the flight home had been more direct. Read Less

From Ads on TV we caught the "bug". Then since my father served in WWii and was in Budapest, I had two bridge pictures to find. The concerge at Hilton Castle Wall was very helpful and we were pleased to find our ship docked between the two bridges. We chose to spend a few extra days in Budapest, and could have spent the entire time exploring the Castle Wall, especially how Hilton incorporated into wall. Our view from room was directly across Danube from Parliament and there is no bad time to look out at that. The Viking crew at hotel was wonderful and our embarkation was smooth as silk. The Bragi had a wonderful crew and our stateroom was great (this is good because we were comparing against the Hilton). In a nut shell - our program director was fantastic. The dining was exquisite and entertainment was FUN! I would make ONE suggestion. Let clients know in advance that you offer fantastic shore excursions that can be booked through you. We did some outside tours and they did not compare at all to Viking tours. The quiet boxes were so nice and very easy to use. Our trip included a ship transfer due to high water and the only inconvenience was packing our bags. We got off Bragi for shore tour, had lunch on the town - how Viking manages to find places on short notice to feed that many people so pleasantly is a mystery. After our tour we bused back to Skadi and felt like something was askew...the lobby, halls, our room --- we were on the same ship! Instead of a disaster, we actually got to see a little more of the area than on shipboard and got to visit a place we would not have seen. We did not have children and there were none on our cruise - don't consider teenager as child. She actually smiled and interacted with others and seemed to enjoy. We are looking forward to going again, and it will be another Viking River Cruise. Wish Viking would find a way to do North American (USA, Canada, Alaska) cruises. My suggestion to all - get trip insurance. As result of health issue we had to cancel and even that was a pleasant experience. One year later and WOW. Most on our ship were in the 50 to 70 range, with one 94 year old...who walked barefoot on cobblestone street... Read Less

We took the Grand European Tour and stayed in the Explorer Suite (a special occasion at great expense). This is a senior cruise, with the majority of guests over 65. Disabuse yourself of the idea that a river cruise is charming small ships sailing right into town. With the exception of Krems and Bamberg, all ships dock very far from the towns and a Viking shuttle bus takes you to the town center, often miles away; the docks are sometimes just cement landings in an industrial port area. This is an all English-speaking cruise, with 95% being Americans, with a few Canadians, Brits, and Australians. Also be prepared for the huge crowds of tours--river cruising has boomed tremendously. There were sometimes four Viking vessels docked, each with 200 people, along with a dozen other cruise boats from other companies. The tours groups are about 50 people each, so imagine how crowded that gets with all the tours going in the same places simultaneously. If you are thinking of getting the Explorer Suite, think again: these rooms (only two on each ship) are located directly over the ships' engines, and the balconies are basically unusable unless the ship is docked (and who wants to sit out there and look at cement?). The vibration from the engines is so loud and so severe that at one point I watched a glass vibrate its way across the glass table and fall off. This is especially true of an up-river cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest) as the engines are always working full-blast. Save your money and get a regular suite up toward the front of the ship where it's quiet. I think Mr. Hagen, Viking's founder, ought to spend two weeks in one of his Explorer Suites to see what it's like. The food is good, not great, but good. I have food allergies and the Maitre d' met with me each morning to go over the entire menu to make sure I wouldn't get sick, and I didn't. The service overall is beyond anything we've ever experienced--kind, helpful, friendly beyond belief, and the Viking crew seems to absolutely love their jobs. Very well done. We added the Prague Extension. Beware--the "transfer to Prague," which our sales agent told us was a few hours by bus, is an EIGHT hour drive via Slovakia (with a rest stop for lunch in what had to be the worst cafeteria food I've ever had), in essence losing an entire day (advertised as three days in Prague). Then, the only other complaint was the Soviet-era hotel called the Corinthia; Viking says "Hilton hotel or equivalent," supposedly a five-star hotel which is nothing of the sort. It's miles away from town in an industrial park, and there are shuttle buses--very nice ones--which take you to and from the old town square every half hour. The hotel's air conditioning did not work, and they "fixed" it by giving us a fan. The windows don't open. Many of us were miserable. If I were to do it all over again, I'd book a flight from Budapest to Prague and get a hotel in town--it would also save time and money. We are a gay couple in our 60s, and luckily found another couple to hang out with, because otherwise the clientele was frosty towards us at best and on at least two occasions people did not allow us to sit with them--always Americans, almost always from the South. My favorite moment at breakfast was when a woman from Alabama ended up sitting across from us--her husband had sat there first leaving only the chair across from me free for her--and under her breath muttered to him "why did you have to sit HERE?" She wouldn't speak to me and stared off into the distance acting as if there were a bad smell in the room. Variations on this occurred several times. Obviously this is a cruise for straight couples. Fortunately there were also some very decent couples, wonderful people, who were happy to sit with us. Sometimes, though, it was awkward. This is no fault of Viking's of course, just something to be aware of if you're a gay couple--bring friends along or be prepared to be shunned, not ever by Viking staff, but by your fellow travelers. On the plus side, the included tours are wonderful, though whirlwind fast, sometimes with a bit of time on your own (never more than a half hour though).. There are rechargeable "Quiet Vox" boxes in each room with an earpiece which one brings along. The highlights of the trip included an organ concert in Passau's cathedral, truly excellent; and when the captain took the ship out for a 90 minute cruise at night in Budapest--we've never seen anything like it in our lives, with all the big buildings in Pest and Buda (opposite sides of the Danube) all lit up. Absolutely mind-blowingly gorgeous. The other highlights were the small towns of Bamberg, Rothenburg, Miltenburg, and Krems. We quickly realized we liked the charm of the small towns more than the crowds and bustle of the big cities like Amsterdam and Vienna (also having been to both before). All in all a wonderful trip--Viking is possibly the best-managed cruise company we've ever seen and they really take care of you--with a few weird hiccups. Read Less

Just finished the Grand European cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest on Bragi. For the price I expected much more. Staff is great, especially the cruise director, concierge, and other people you may deal with at the front desk. Cabin was clean and attendant was excellent. Dining and shore excursions were not so great. Dining service is slow. Dinner took 1.5 - 2 hours each night. Dining staff seemed to work hard however there didn't seem to be enough of them. Food was way too salty, especially the beef dishes. Beef was always tough. Water glasses were rarely refilled unless you asked. Most shore excursions were walking tours. The bus tours were good but there were only a few. Most tours were walking only and half were not very good. Some guides did not cover much area and babbled on about history of a few things. When I take a walking tour I prefer to learn about as many sites as possible. Most guides got into too much history on a few sites which left less time to see other sites. Would have preferred more bus tour to see as much of each city as possible. Almost half the cruise was on the Main river through Germany. Problem with the Main river are low bridges which means we were not allowed to use the upper deck for almost half the cruise. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of seeing all of the wonderful cities along these rivers. I can only rank it a 1 due to many reasons. #1. You have only an hour or 2 of free time in most of the locations. #2. There is WAY TOO MUCH down time. Most of us finished our novels we brought and were sharing with each other. A lot of time each day is spent cruising the river. While some days had beautiful scenery, most of the time it was just river banks. #3. The service was poor! In the dining room most of us laughed about don't order anything to drink other than wine, because you will never get a refill. Unfortunately, I love iced tea. Only twice in the entire cruise was my iced tea refilled. And . . . if you decided you wanted desert without ordering it with your meal - be prepared to be lectured by a waiter or waitress! #4. I do not go on a cruise to listen to their staff complain about each other and the passengers. #5. The guides are hit and miss. We found out that many of the guides were volunteers with the local historical society. #6. NO entertainment at night. They did have 2 nights where people came on board and those were great. #7. No exercising. There is a walking track, but tread lightly or the people below hear your footsteps. The pros: #1 Beautiful ship. #2 Met great people that we will continue to connect with! Read Less

we would have preferred a bus between schiphol & ghent rather than flying to brussels. preCruise tours of ghent, bruges & amsterdam were wonderful; ms tineke vanDenbege was delightful & helpful providing continuity between ghent & amsterdam. the hotel accommodations in ghent & amsterdam were great. we had time before embarkation to visit keukenhof gardens on the last day of their season, & the vanGogh museum (we had already been to the rijksMuseum on a previous bike&barge trip). I would have liked a fitness option to theTours or an onBoard fitnessRoom; the ludwigSteig hike to the passau oberHaus was nice. most of the localTour guides were well informed, courteous & congenial. the marketTours & concerts were a welcome change. there was ample freeTime on shore with thePursers providing welcome guidance of local sightSeeing. we would have loved an interior tour of the parliament in budaPest. the vikingStaff @BUD was most helpful & unexpected. all the onBoard meals were great. freeSeating encouraged circulation. smaller guest population compared to oceanCruises is preferred. the preDinner orientation talks were informative. baggage handling @localHotels, embarkation & disembarkation was efficient & careFree. we are going on your lyon&provence riverCruise nxtMonth. I have been on many cruises but never have I experienced a staff that could care less about you! I had expected a higher level of service given the price. Nope. I expected the land tours to be good. Only a few of them were as they only used local volunteers. The food was mediocre. I would compare it to a Denny's on most nights. Here are examples: I injured my food getting off of one of their buses. No one bother to tell any of us that 2 people in the prior bus has tripped over the same small rolled curb (in all honestly blended in). I was brought on board and told I could go to the hospital the next day at the next city. I am young, so it wasn't a problem for me. The head of housekeeping accompanied us on the drive to the hospital (complaining the entire time about the stupid questions people ask and he was glad to be off of the ship away from the customers). He ditched us as soon as we checked in to the ER. Wasn't a minor injury - tore many ligaments in the ankle and I have to see a specialist because it still swells on occasion. (Sucks when you try and run 3-4 miles a day.) While on board, you could hear staff yelling at other staff members. The meals are at specific times only. Do not arrive late or you will not be feed. There are no h'oeuvres out at any time. Not even cheese and crackers. It is free sitting, but they will NOT take your order until the entire table is sat (you could wait 15 - 20 minutes). Do not ever expect to get your iced tea refilled. Now the wine and beer - they do keep that flowing! You have VERY little time on land. The river is like an LA freeway. You have to get usually after 3 hours in town because of the wait time for the locks. This was explained to us by the staff. I get it - but you need to tell people beforehand. As I said, the tours were very hit and miss. Some guides were great - some were awful. I spend most of my time in a beautiful city with a tour guide that spent most of the time talking about a US movie that was filmed there. Seriously - let's go here to see this where this was filmed, then let's go there to see where such and such scene was filmed. Remember these are free guides provided to the cruise line by the historical society. They can say and do whatever they want. Some are experienced, some have to do it for a college course. Oh, one more thing. We were told (by calling the Viking - who we booked the cruise through) that there was a gym. No gym and definitely no walking or running on the walking path. It is right above cabins and there is no soundproofing! Our friends said they could hear every footstep. On the great side - we met amazing people. We are still in contact with several couples and do see them. Read Less

This was our second river cruise. We had been to France, Germany, and Austria. Since my Dad was in Nerthlands during World War II, we thought we should visit the Country now. We had a frantastic time. We could not express in words what it is like to walk through Amsterdam. We did arrive on a Long Weekend for the Nerthlands, however, the number of people passing through the City was unbelievable. Dealing with the bicycle paths was the interesting. The Viking buses collected us at the Airport and delivered us to the ship. The ship was not docked downtown. Viking operated shuttle buses to the centre of town; it was great. The information provided on board was timely and informative. First night we had a meet and greet with Ship's Staff. The food was great. Service and attention to the needs were perfect. We book our trip for the Fall of 2017. I'm thinking we may do some others in China and South America. Read Less

Cruise was wonderful, excursions were very good, food was excellent, airport transfer was non-existent. Even though we had transfers from the airport to the ship, no one from Viking was there to pick us up. After several attempts to contact the ship by phone, we were finally told to take a taxi, but the ship was not able to provide an address or exact location. We were dropped off in the port area and had to walk about 1/2 mile in rainy, windy weather to find our ship. We were never informed why we were not met at the airport even though we arrived on time in Amsterdam on a flight arranged by Viking Air. We were also assigned a flight by Viking Air that had two stopovers and took 17 hours. Our traveling companions were given a direct flight that took only ten hours. When I contacted Viking about this difference, I never got a response. Viking is very good, but obviously not as excellent as their commercials would portray. Read Less

We went to see Tulips and Windmills, and saw both! The ship and crew were excellent, and lived up to the reputation of Viking to "make it right" when there was an issue in one location. The food and service staff were wonderful! We cruised at night, so didn't have a lot of scenery along the waterways to view, which was fine as it was mostly oil refineries. The docking locations varied, and some were great (Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hoorn were all beautiful). Shore excursions were well done, for the most part. River cruising is so much better than ocean cruising - we met some amazing people and actually were able to enjoy their company at meals, and to see and recognize them while on the ship. On the big cruises you might never see the same person twice. It is just so much more relaxing, and I would recommend it to anyone. Read Less

The staff could not have been nicer. They were helpful when we ordered our cruise, we called several times with questions which were answered to our satisfaction, meals and waiters were excellent. There was lots of variety to choose from. The waiters were very attentive and fun loving. We enjoyed all of the excursions. They were all efficiently handled. Guides were very informative. We learned many things about Holland that we did not know before. We really enjoyed the coffee and pie with the family in Hoorn, Netherlands. Some complained about walking but we thought all of the walks were enjoyable walks for a couple in their late 70s. The highlight for us was touring the Keukenhof Tulip gardens. In spite of the rain the gardens were spectacular. We even did several scenic walks on our own which we enjoyed. The only negative was there were so many great excursions offered at the same time to choose from, so we had to make some hard choices which meant we missed some excursions we would like to have gone on. We would recommend Viking for a river cruise. We also appreciated the help at the airport upon arrival to Amsterdam. On departure the Viking representative was so helpful to us getting our boarding passes and to our gate. Read Less

The food was great) local specialties and traditional items, the staff attentive and the excursions were completely organized. The waiter knew my name and preferences on the second day! The cabin was clean, fairly spacious (definitely get one with a balcony), and the maid took care of our every need. The excursions were very well organized and the pace was just right. Each one had options for participation levels and length of stay. This was my first river cruise and I can't wait to sail again. I liked it so much better than the larger ocean cruise ships. This is the only way to travel. No changing of hotels and repacking regularly. Delicious food taken care of by a great kitchen staff 3 times a day. Breakfast and lunch could be fast buffet style or leisurely sit down. We were handed water for all excursions and in the room at no extra charge. Beer, wine and soft drinks were offered free with lunch and dinner. We were waited on hand and foot throughout the cruise by a great staff. Travel was to sites while sleeping instead of long bus rides. You could tour at your own pace around the offered sites or on your own or just stay aboard. One of the nice surprises was that staff members accompanied the scheduled tours and took many pictures of the sites and the folks exploring These pictures could be purchased at the end of the trip on a flash drive. One didn't need to take any pictures if he so chose and would still have many to remember the trip. We look forward to the next time we travel with Viking. It had been more than 25 years since I had traveled in The Netherlands and Belgium and I was anxious to return. Also my husband had never seen the tulips. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. The cumulative impact of the tours was to give us a good understanding of the history, culture, and food of the area. The story of their magnificent water management system unfolded through several tours and the visit to the tulip farm was a very informative and enjoyable experience. The trip to Bruges was a trip down memory lane for me and I found the restaurant I had been to several times in the 1970's, still serving fabulous mussels. Hoorn was a delightful surprise and I hope to go back there some day. We took the 2-day extension in The Hague and, using the trolley, were able to see the Peace Palace, Delft, and downtown The Hague. We were glad we spent the time in The Hague. This was our third Viking river cruise, and certainly not our last. The Bragi simply reinforced our love of river cruising. The entire ship's company were outstanding, and the best ambassadors the Viking company could ever ask for. From the moment we were met at the airport, to the time we were quickly checked in and escorted to our cabin was a welcomed relief. Like most of our cruise mates, we travelled a great distance just to get to Amsterdam, and we were completely exhausted after a long flight from Los Angeles USA. So, to be treated so kindly, and taken to our Explorer Suite, where we were overwhelmed by the luxury and magnificent view from our cabin was much more than we expected. Viking dinning is always a fantastic experience, if you are willing to enjoy foods you would never eat on a normal basis. The Bragi was no exception to the Viking concept of gourmet dinning. What an experience, everyday was a different dinning adventure for us, and we truly enjoyed the chef's recommendations, combined with our waiter's knowledgeable and delicious wine pairing. We recommend purchasing the the Viking drink package, so you can really enjoy your total dinning experience. The entertainment was fabulous, and personal. The Bragi has a relaxing intimate nightclub atmosphere, that is simply a great time to catch your breath from a full day of shore excursions, and enjoy the company of other quests and crew members. We tried to do as many shore excursions as we could in every port, and we enjoyed each and every one of them. Now, I can only speak of our own personal Viking experience, and we have not been disappointed with any of our three cruises. All are completely different; China, Russia, and the Netherlands, but still wonderfully unique memories for us. River cruising is not for everyone, but if you just go with the flow, it can be a very different and rewarding adventure. If you are the type of person who needs more time on shore excursions, my suggestion is to add land time to your travels either before or after your cruise, so that you can experience things at your own pace. You've already paid for your airfare, and you have the power to arrive and depart on your own personal timetable. Of course this really depends on the amount of time you have available for your vacation. The best part of this cruise was the entire ship's company, and we can hardly wait to someday set sail once more with the Bragi across Europe. Good traveling to all. Read Less

This is a fabulous cruise in spite of low water levels and swapping ships ( bus from Nuremberg to Passau) plus having to bus into Budapest from Vienna! Our weather was wonderful, unseasonably warm, but no rain causes even lower levels! Our visit to Bratislava was an hour bus ride from Vienna also.. as we had to spend 2 nights in Vienna, which was the first time a ship couldn't go there! We had swapped from Bragi to identical sister ship Skadi which was handled by Viking very professional and with style. Our Program director, Caspar and Concierge Dejan accompanied us but it was hard to say goodbye to the rest of the crew we had grown to love. Disappointed we were bused also into Budapest and stayed our last night at the Hilton, which is up by the castle on Buda and had an awesome view from our very large room. Our stay in Budapest was only a few hours and that was upsetting but unavoidable. We did feel Viking should have given us a choice of the city bus tour or going directly to the hotel. When we did finally get to our room, 5:00 pm we had spent way too many hours on a bus! Exhausted and had to get our luggage out by 2:30 am to transition to airport for return! How I longed for a full day & 1 night in this beautiful city on the boat! This had been the plan if we had been able to complete itinerary. Viking did its very best, always took excellent care of us, in spite of change in plans, out of their control. YES, I would do this cruise again...in spite of everything, but plan on several extra days in Budapest on our own. The Paris tradgedy was just hours before we left for airport, so I am counting my blessings for an awesome trip and safe return to the USA! Read Less

We lost 1-2 days of river cruising and spent many hours on buses instead. Viking made good for it with a credit that I applied to our next Ocean Cruise. However, our stateroom was very small and no upgrades were available due to rescheduling passengers leaving from Amsterdam. The excursions were great but several were cut short due to the busing situation. Entertainment was great. Our cruise director Casper was a true renaissance man with a wealth of information and a great sense of humor. We are loyal fans of Viking and will continue to cruise with them even with these minor problems. The mark of a good company is how they make something good out of a bad situation. Our trip on the Grand European tour from Budapest to Amsterdam was our first river cruise and set the standard for all future river cruises. We will do another with Viking because they could not have done a better job of communicating, assisting, arranging, preparing, and executing. Friendly, accommodating customer service was a hallmark of this cruise. If you needed money changed, they helped. If you missed a connection (which we didn't), they helped. On rainy days, golf-size umbrellas were available at the entrance, or if you forgot yours or had a small, size pocket one, you could avail yourself of the large size. At meals, the wait staff got to know our needs because we sat together every night in a particular place and had the same server. She knew who wanted decaf at the end of the meal and who was going to order ice cream with whatever dessert was on tap that night. Wine was poured in abundance throughout the meal, and they remained attentive to us throughout. If we wanted another drink from the bar, she would get it with a smile. It's those little customer service efforts that made this cruise so enjoyable. One issue - no workout room on the ship. Shore excursions were handled very professionally, and we learned so much from the local guides. We wanted to be in the same excursions as our new-found friends, and once we asked the desk to do that, it was arranged for all the other day trips we took. Even the nay-sayers (who complain about everything) were answered with a smile and a friendly tone. You really can't complain about water levels but some did anyway. We had to change ships mid-way and the transition from one ship to the other came off without a hitch. From the greeting at the Budapest airport to the adieu at the Amsterdam airport, it could not have been a better cruise (except for the weather and Viking didn't have control over that). Cannot wait for our next one! Read Less

We chose this Viking cruise because it allowed us to see much of Europe We enjoyed each port and the scheduled tours.Everything was well organized and optional tours were available if desired. The cruise on the river and canals was beautiful although a bit cool as it wasOct. The activities onboard were great. Educational presentations prepared us for the next port The meals were very good and always represented the country we were in The wait staff was exceptional and foresaw all our needs. They were very eager to plesae and would attempt to fillall requests. They were a source of entertainment in their own way We had to change ships as water level was low. This was very well handled and occurred without a hitch. We boarded the new ship and went directly to our cabin and found all of our belongings waiting We would definitely recommend this cruise Read Less

Everything about the cruise was above expectations! The food was outstanding, always served quickly, hot and beautifully presented! The service staff prompt, courteous, and personable! The local guides through the audio devices were so knowledgeable and answered every question. The small groups made everything accessible! Our Cruise Director could not have been better! Roos's commentaries while cruising were so informative and she has the perfect personality to deal with groups and individuals. All of the officers were friendly and informative while being very professional. We have already booked another Viking cruise! Thank you! Read Less

We wanted to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday in a special way and we could not have asked for a better way to do so. The whole trip was AMAZING! From only having to unpack & pack once (ok, it was twice because of the low level of water in the Danube-but Viking can't control everything) while getting to visit interesting out of the way towns and attractions in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary was an absolute joy. The staffs on both river ships the Bragi and her sister ship Skadi made us feel right at home. They were quick to learn our preferences (such as having our ice bucket filled each morning) and fulfilling them without us having to prompt them. Our cruise director, Roos, was very knowledgable and charismatic, making this trip unforgettable . We had excellent daily tour guides that made each stop both informative and fun. The audio sets used by the guides allowed me to wander and linger behind our group to take the photographs that I wanted while not missing any of their knowledge or humor. The two weeks spent with Viking not only provided us with unforgetable memories but also new life long friendships. Upon our return, when I have been asked how our trip went, my consistent reply has been "If you can afford it, you should absolutely experience a Viking River Cruise." The only thing that I would change, if we were do it all over again, would be to extend our time in both Amsterdam and Budipest, but due to my work responsibilities, that was not possible. Read Less
