I chose this cruise because we had friends that were doing the same one and I wanted to do it with them. Also, I love Amsterdam and this tour gave us a day and a half in the beginning and a day and a half in the end. We were able to tour the town on our own and visit the Anne Frank House without pre-purchasing our tickets. The tour director was fantastic and made sure that everything was done as it should. The Home-Hosted Visit in Hoorn was interesting as you really got a flavor of the people. I have cruised with Viking before and the service was beyond wonderful. The cabins were nicely decorated and relaxing and having a balcony was an added bonus. I know you don't spend much time in the room but when you do, you want to relax. It is also a nice cruise line because you do not find children on board which can put a kink in traveling. Read Less

I found that two people we had connected with on our cruise in 2015 were going on this cruise and even though we were put on the wait list we got a call that there was a cabin available. We were able to sign up for it and the bonus was we had a balcony. This itinerary was perfect because it gave us two days in Amsterdam a city I was wanting to spend more time in. As we arrived at the ship, we were surprised to hear the voice of Maryanne, the tour director of our first cruise. She was so much fun and organized. The cities we visited were beautiful and interesting. On one tour, we were able to have coffee and treats with an inhabitant of the city. I would have to say this was the highlight of the trip. Also the garden in Amsterdam was so pretty with all the flowers in bloom. Read Less

Chose this cruise because we enjoy Viking. We took an earlier Viking cruise that ended in Amsterdam, but we flew out the morning we disembarked. i' was eager to experience Amsterdam. We loved the tour of Amsterdam and were able to spend our free time in the Rijksmuseum. The shore excursions were excellent--the right amount of activity--also very knowledgable guides. We enjoyed learning about the history of the countries we visited. Visiting sites related to World War II was moving. Dining on the ship was an delightful experience. The food an wine were exceptional. We appreciated the buffet lunch option. The waiters were efficient and gracious. The whole staff were friendly and capable. Our day in Bruges was interesting and informative. We also enjoyed our trip to the pepper farm. Most exciting however, and the real highlight of the trip was the day we spend in the Kirkenhof Garden--the tulips provided an incredible kalidescope of color and beauty. Read Less

First time in Europe. Wanted to see medieval Europe. We were not disappointed. Amsterdam and it's canals was beautiful. Never saw so many bicycles in my life. Netherlands windmills were fascinating. All the Rhine River ports in Germany were amazing. Town after town a thousand years old and spectacular cathedrals. Bamberg was probably our favorite. It was not a bombing target during WW II and is mostly original. The stretch of the Danube after leaving Vienna for Budapest is beautiful. It would have been better on a warmer day--it was too cold to spend much time on the Sun deck. The included shore excursions at every port were very interesting with excellent local guides speaking understandable English. The wireless headsets provided by Viking allowed great freedom to roam a short distance from the guide while hearing every word. And most of the guides were very knowledgeable providing a non-stop narrative about their city. The Viking Bragi is a marvelous boat. Dining is a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the option to eat more casually in the Lounge, or outdoors on the Aquavit Terrace when the temperature was warm enough. Not much to do on board compared to an ocean cruise, but the Viking emphasis is on the ports you visit, not the ship. Local entertainment was in the Lounge on several evenings. Overall experience was excellent and I would not hesitate to do another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

We cruised the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers from Budapest to Amsterdam, a great itinerary. Our second cruise with Viking, we were not disappointed. Everything was excellent....food, service, shore excursions, staff.....could not fault it. Would have no hesitation cruising with this company again.....they do do it well! Great ports, although our two days in Vienna were continuous rain, which put a dampener on things (excuse the pun). In 14 days, not one meal on the meal was repeated the menu and there was a fabulous selection of wines from all around the world. The weather at this time of year was a little cool, and wet in some ports. On one occasion, the temperature was 0-8 celcius for the day. Rug up!! We did have the threat of having to change ships due to low water, but luckily for us, we did not have to. Every other ship we spoke to had to change. Read Less

Always wanted to do a River Cruise to visit several cities in Europe. The 14 Day Viking Cruise seemed perfect and could not have had a better experience. The Cruise director was great providing a lot of local history and the rest of the crew was very helpful. the daily tours offered a great opportunity to experience the local culture in both small villages and large cities. The included tours were a great value and the special tours provided a great opportunity to see more historical sites. All the guides were first rate, especially the Nuremberg WW II tour guide. Our stateroom was comfortable with plenty of room for storage but wespent most of our time on the upper decks or on tours. We started the tour in Prague with motor coach transfer to Budapest. Airport transfers for arrival and departure were smooth with no problems. Highly recommend Viking River Cruises. Read Less

We enjoyed an amazing river cruise through Europe from Budapest to Amsterdam with days in Prague before and Amsterdam at the end. So much history and scenery to see! Cabins were a bit small but it was a river cruise. Bathrooms were very well designed to maximize space. The food and service were outstanding. Liked that the food and wine were based on local cuisine. The German theme night was very good. The included tours were wonderful with the right amount of time and information to go back and explore more on our own. Although the river water level was low in places, we did not have to change boats. Viking used buses in a few places to get us to there before the boat giving us more time in port. They did an exceptional job of maximizing an itinerary that included larger towns and smaller villages to give us an interesting view of Europe. Would definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

After a very enjoyable two week cruise through France on Viking ships, we decided to go for the Grand Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. We added a short extension in Amsterdam. Although we were not disappointed with the cruise, there are a few things Viking should do to improve offered shore excursions. Local guides were available in almost every instance and were generally good. We did have a couple of guides who were not up to standard. When we mentioned this to the ship's staff, we were only told that others had made the same complaint. Not a very encouraging answer. Be wary of making trips away from the port cities. Too often the excursions were cut short because of slow progress through locks, or the time spent on a bus ride. These excursions are very pricey and the amount of time spent at the site did not seem to make for a good value. Be sure to take advantage of the extensions that are offered for free on the included tours. The extra time was well spent! Perhaps the best thing to think about if contemplating this cruise is to take it in sections. Spend more time in the embarkation or disembarkation cities, or both, and forego the lengthier cruise. It is probably worth the added expense to travel either in later spring or earlier fall. Read Less

The glass blower they brought on board was fantastic, We added Amsterdam and Prague and both were lovely, and the Viking staff at the hotels were spot on. You can't ask for better service that you get with Viking. Like I said, I wish we could go every year, because we would, we liked it so much. Did I mention the food? This is our second cruise with Viking. The first was in Russia, and was superb. Well thought out, great crew, significant learning while being entertained. This cruise was the antithesis of the Russia experience. I'll begin with a discussion of the Internet access on the ship. This is critical to me, and was particularly so this time since we had a grandson-in-law undergoing delicate cancer-related surgery and wanted to be in constant communication with our granddaughter. The Wi-Fi signal on the ship could only be received in one's stateroom while sitting on the toilet, and often that didn't work either. Wi-Fi in the reception area and the lounge was O.K. but, of course, inconvenient. The ship router to wide area connections were spotty and congested. I am an Electrical Engineer, and spent my career in data communications. The problems alluded to above are easily remediated, but Viking is apparently rooted in the 19th (o.k., maybe 20th) century and just doesn't care about this vital service. The Wi-Fi capability (or lack thereof) absolutely ruined the cruise for me, and I will never use Viking again. I wrote to the hotel director, an officious pompous ass, about the Wi-Fi problem, and he never gave me the courtesy of a response. If he worked for me, he'd be gone for that contempt for the passengers alone. The activity director was of the forced perky school, and I literally had to leave whenever she spoke about the day's plans. She literally made my skin crawl with cutesy-poo behavior. The shore excursions were boring and repetitive. They stopped at any town with a church, palace or castle and generally visiting one of these three "landmarks" constituted the excursion. Trust me, when you finish this cruise you will have been in more churches than Pope Francis and more castles than King Arthur. There was very seldom enough time allocated to roaming the city, meeting the people, and sampling local cuisine while getting a real feel for the city. We always had to rush because there was another town to visit down river, and they had a "can't miss" church, palace or castle. Half as many stops for twice as long would have been 100% better for me, and for many of the folks we spoke with. In contrast to the bad experience with Internet access, tour planning and courtesy of the management, the dining and housekeeping staff were wonderful. I have Celiac Disease, so being gluten-free is not a choice function for me - it is a life saving necessity. The Maitre'd and the waitstaff worked overtime to make me comfortable that I'd never be "glutened" and after a day on the ship I never worried about it again. I met with Roland (the Maitre'd) each morning and we planned out the meals for the day. The waitstaff got to know me (and, I think, become my friends) quickly, and they knew exactly how to assure that the meal plan was adhered to. Wonderful guys and one wonderful gal; they could all work for me any day and I'd be proud to have them. As an aside, the bartender knew how to make a really good martini, and one was in my hand 60 seconds after entering the lounge without my saying a word. Housekeeping was impeccable, and the cabin attendant was wonderful If you are thinking about this cruise, don't bother to bring any electronic communication device, and be ready for a dizzying procession of churches, palaces and castles. Better yet, think again. Read Less

I injured my knee a month before the cruise and was still in pain. There are walking groups for the slower walkers. This was not always so easy, one man kept getting lost, another couple was always late, it was not hard to get to certain areas walking but once inside the castles or ruins the paths were very uneven and painful for me. I loved the dining. I felt like we were so important and everyone tried to serve us the best possible meals in the best possible way. I can not say one thing negative about our meals or the servers. We loved meeting new people every day so ate at different tables frequently. We met so many nice people. I loved sitting up on the terrace as we sailed but if we couldn't my room was comfortable to just sit on our bed and watch the countryside as we sailed by. The room was small but very comfortable and we had plenty of room in the bath. I loved the heated floors! The tours were varied and appropriate for the areas, I had plenty of time to sight see and shop. I do not feel like I missed anything until Buda Pest. We had en extra day in Vienna and we put it to good use but I still am so sad that our trip was interrupted in Vienna due to a lock issue and then and EU Conference where they shut down the river. We were bussed in to Buda Pest, straight to the airport. I still get so sad thinking that we did not get to sail in to that beautiful city, especially when I read in one of the suggested readings that that is the only way to enter Buda Pest. I felt our compensation was very poor also. The money I spent on this trip was saved for a long time, I am not sure I will ever be able to take another Viking Cruise and even if I could the discount offered was so very little. My perfect trip was not so perfect due to knee pain and then not to get to see the city I thought was the crown jewel and it still over shadows how wonderful the rest of the trip was. Read Less

Going on a River Cruise was on our bucket list and Viking appealed to us. We flew into Budapest a couple of days early and met family there and toured around on our own. Budapest is a beautiful place that I never would have thought of visiting. So glad this is where our Viking Cruise started. Our family left us and went on their way and we boarded the Bragi. Viking was so congenial and allowed us to board early. We were able to tour around the ship and get a bite to eat until our cabin was ready. The ship was so pretty and everyone was so friendly. Our cabin was small, but that is not a problem because we were not in our cabin that much. We were out on shore excursions or in the dining area or on the terrace or bar. Our cabin stewardess was so sweet and she kept everything so nice. The food was excellent and our servers were the very best. We met some awesome people on our cruise and always looked forward to meeting up with everyone for meals to visit and share our days. The shore excursions were so educational and we learned so much. All of the foods we tried were delicious. Debarkation went smoothly. We stayed one extra night in Amsterdam and were able to see the VanGogh museum and the Anne Frank House (2 things we did not want to miss while there). Loved the smaller size of the ship and fewer guests on board. Made the experience more intimate. We loved this Viking River cruise and have planned a Viking Ocean cruise in 2018. Read Less

We enjoyed the cruise very much. It was our first time to Europe and our first Viking experience. There was not enough room on the sundeck for the majority of people. Some people grabbed the best seats and tables and held them for their friends who sometimes weren't there yet. I was surprised how many locks and low bridges we had to go through. The sundeck was closed off completely for about 5 days. So it was hard to get much sun & exercise. There were usually 4-5 buses that took us on the excursions. There were A, B, C, D & sometimes E. For some reason, we were never on Bus A or B. We purchased the thumb drive with our tour pictures. There were many pictures of some people and very few of others. The main guide seemed to have taken the pictures and was never on our bus. The food and service was excellent. The attendants were all very polite. Read Less

We were invited to cruise with Fonda's cousin and his wife, Russell and Ramona Jones. So, so glad we accepted!! Wonderful time getting to see Europe from the rivers. Castles were a unique experience. Acquired new knowledge of the how's, why's, and wherefores of medieval living. Saw many churches and cathedrals with much history presented. Lovely religious relics including stained glass windows, pipe organs, and statues. The daily land tours presented plenty of experiences to "gawk" at the old-world buildings that are so picturesque. Walking on all the lovely, though uneven, cobblestone, was an adventure in itself. The food on board was of the finest locally grown available. The variety of wines was awesome! Served daily with lunch and dinner provided us with the opportunity to try both whites and reds. If wine wasn't to your taste, the bar was very well stocked to give you pretty much any kind of mixed drink you could want. The staff went above and beyond anything we had ever experienced. How wonderful to come in, ready for bed, only to find your room cleaned and restocked again AND I loved having my nightgown laying in wait for me. Ahh, what luxury!! Read Less

It got to the point where we didn't even leave the ship. This would be the trip of a life time and just me and my WONDERFUL WIFE! Everything VIKING promised they came about! Our travel agent took care of our demands to the TEE! The only thing we hated was the trip over and back!!! ALL NIGHT!!! YUCK! The security was a pain in the BUTT, but we knew it was worth it! When VIKING got hold of us, everything was PERFECT! The SHip was nice and new and clean and the personnel were the BEST! Our Cabin wasn't the Taj MAHAL , but was Fine! THe food was the BEST, not like on a cruise on the Caribbean , but very, very good! We even received tours of the kitchen , which has never happened before for us and it was a real treat to meet the people that did such a GREAT job preparing our meals!!!! The service was excellent. We didn't do a lot of paid shore excursions , but the ones we did were WORTH IT!!!! We prefer to see the land on our own together! AND.......we never felt unsafe!
