My sister-in-law has been on this cruise three times and recommended it very highly. It lived up to our expectations, and more. The service, tour guides, on board staff, stateroom and food were all exceptional. Housekeeping staff were outstanding. The room was tidied and the bed was made more than once a day (a schedule allowed time for a nap almost every day.) The excursions were interesting and informative. Most involved quite a bit of walking, but there was often a "leisure" option for those with less mobility. For the most part, the guides spoke excellent English, although there were one or two who were more difficult to understand. The cruise director was outstanding--engaged, entertaining, warm, extremely organized and always available. I'm not sure when she slept. Other than the walking tours, there was limited opportunity for exercise, but the too deck was open most days, so the walkingŕjogging track was available. Overall, this was an exceptional experience! Best value for the length of trip. Food was amazing. Staff was incredible. Coming took care of us from the moment we arrived in Budapest to the airport in Amsterdam. We then linked another Viking cruise, Paris to Normandy, and the transfer was seamless. Viking did an incredible job. This was our first river cruise, so we wanted to make the best of our travel time. Linking the two cruises made sense to us and Viking made the trip amazing. The second ship was the Rolf. All staff, food, and experience was just as wonderful as the Baldur. We were spoiled by the friendly and very competent staff on both ships. Our ONLY dislike was a couple of walking tour guides, who talked incessantly about every brick and stone we passed and walked SO slowly. We recognize some folks like that sort of detail and pace, but we grew tired of it. The towns were wonderful to explore. Thank you, Viking, for a fab experience. We WILL be back!! Read Less

We really enjoyed a previous cruise and wanted to see sights between Amsterdam and Budapest. We really enjoyed the cruise; the crew, food, and ship were wonderful. The daily tours with the local guides were great. We appreciated the complimentary upgrade and benefits of sailing in a suite. The size of the ship and number of passengers on board were conducive to building friendships and relationships with other passengers. We especially enjoyed the concert we attended in Vienna. The included tour in Budapest was really informative and the tour guide gave let us know what it was really like to live there. We loved the meals aboard ship and again the crew was great. The whole trip was a wonderful experience. We have recommended Viking tours to our family and friends and are looking forward to sailing with Viking again in the future. The palaces and cathedrals we viewed we’re really impressive, they were symbolic of the tremendous wealth of the churches and nobility. Read Less

Started in Prague, not on the river, and Budapest. The history, the people, the land, the architecture (Cathedrals, Churches, towns/villages, castles, bridges, etc.) were marvelous! Meals on the boat were spectacular both in variety and presentation beginning with the local cuisine. With the many shore excursions you had the opportunity to try the best of food the various ports had to offer. Can not say enough about the history seen first hand from the Czech Republic all the way to Amsterdam. Can not complement the staff enough, kudos to all. The Concierge, the waiters/wait staff, the cabin staff, etc. were all polite and very professional. The Cruise Director, Anthony, was courteous, dynamic, and extremely knowledgeable of all the locations where we went. All the shore excursions were well planned and the guides were very enthusiastic and thorough with personalities that made these trips very enjoyable. I do not have the words to express how happy we were with Viking! From the time you got off the airplane where you were met to the time you had to leave, Viking personnel were there to help. Viking is a first class operation and we look forward to our next adventure with them!! Read Less

A bucket list trip that may be the only time we do this ... wanted to ‘see it all’! We joined the ship in Amsterdam. We were met at the airport by Viking reps and quickly taken to the Viking Baldur at the port. Great assistance with luggage at the airport - getting luggage onto the ship was a bit sketchy - minimal assistance. Departed on time. The Included shore excursions throughout were excellent. Most required a significant amount of walking, but hills and obstructions were minimal. Guides were English speaking throughout and excellent. Special cities - Nuremberg where we took a special tour of WWII sites; Vienna; Budapest; and Prague. Staff.on board was exceptional - friendly, helpful, courteous, willing to do whatever to meet our wants and needs. Food - too much, too often, too good. The food choices were great and regional tastings were excellent. The cabin was small, but well laid out and everything worked well. The veranda was a plus on many occasions - we enjoyed it night and day. Great sleeping environment. All of the Viking plans and itinerary worked without a flaw. We used Viking free air and were pleased with this option. We did not have to change ships owing to high or low water. All connections were on time. The trip was not ‘cheap’ in any regard but it exceeded our expectations. We would do it again ... and recommend it strongly. Read Less

If you had any food issues they were taken care of. The always had a chef to make you a omelette in the morning. The hearty breakfast was great. So much fresh fruit and pastry. The staff always had great tour guides available. They were constantly aware of the tides and the weather to keep us safe. I felt so safe serene, and relaxed. The information shared on our tv in our room were very helpful along with all the audiovoxes when we went on tours. Such a professional group of folks. We always ate at the same table as our waiter and waitress were the best. They gave us insights on the foods wherever we were on the trip. The excursions were terrific. The extra offerings were great as well. I would recommend this trip to anyone who really wants to see Europe. Read Less

Cannot recommend the Viking experience high enough. the ship was beautiful. The food was incredible, plenty of choices. The educational speakers brought on board were surprisingly entertaining. This was a river cruise and it was our 2nd time with viking on the river. Would love to go again. The entertainment was so much fun and the talent very good. Loved Amsterdam and stayed a few extra days to experience the city. the accommodations arranged through Viking were high end. The coffee bar was addicting and when I got home I surely missed it. The service was utterly spectacular. The cabin was comfortable and everything always worked. The food was excellent. All of our guides were very knowledgeable and excursions were wonderful. I will definitely cruise with Viking again. We saw both large cities in small towns. On our tours there was enough time to see interesting sites and also enough time for independent meandering about town. It was interesting that we felt that there was a lot to do and yet it was a relaxing journey. Because of the small number of passengers on a river cruise, you get to know many of the other passengers quite well. This was probably one of the nicest aspects of our cruise. At the end of our cruise we paid for an extra couple of days in Budapest. This was a worthwhile addition to the cruise. A guide helped us check into the hotel and we had a couple of tours about the city. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it travelled to countries we thought we'd enjoy viewing along the Danube/ Main/ Rhine Rivers, and we were not disappointed to say the least. We thoroughly enjoyed the city tours and found them quite worthwhile. All the extra excursions were excellent, except for one of the castle tours which we felt was not as good. As well, when not on an extra excursion, it was great to walk into the towns and do our own thing, or simply stay on the ship and relax. The ship and crew were overly accommodating and welcoming. They took every opportunity to help, entertain, direct, or simply chit chat with us, always trying to satisfy all of our wants and needs. The food was amazing! You could order a la carte, or buffet for lunches and breakfasts. Dinners always had a variety of great choices that were often regional specialties made it difficult to decide. Coffee and tea available anytime as well. At night, there was always something going on.... entertainment, presentations about the regions, or just enjoying a drink with dance and music. The trip was an experience everyone should have the opportunity to take. We felt like royalty... highly recommended! Read Less

All services on the Baldur were clearly outstanding and beyond first class in my opinion. Shore excursions were extremely well organized and always on time. Barry, the cruise director was outstanding. Transfers from the airport to the ship and from the ship back to the airport were flawlessly executed. The servers on the ship deserve special commendation and I only wish I could remember their names. The female bartender and part time server was particularly outstanding and mixed my New Orleans' Hurricanes to perfection after learning the recipe from a laptop. The Baldur was expertly guided through about 60 locks by highly qualified pilots and along the entire river journey without any problems. As a result of my great experience on the Baldur, I have booked the Viking Pharaohs and Pyramids tour on the Nile River for March 2019. I hope to experience the same great service, food, and shore excursions in Egypt as provided by the Viking Baldur in Europe. Read Less

Our Program Director, David, was absolutely marvelous. He made the trip so personal and so special. Everyone loved him, especially his British accent. I would love to cruise with him again. All staff members - waiters, bartenders, hotel manager, housekeeping, etc. were 5-star. They provided personal, friendly, timely service. Each night the food was absolutely delicious and we loved all the varieties of wine available. Reviewing the posted dinner menu was something to look forward to every morning. Chef Marius was funny and entertaining. And all the soups were superb. We actually asked to meet the soup Chef because his selections were so tasty. We included soup with dinner each night. The excursions were entertaining and well organized. The tour guides were wonderful and provided a wealth of information. We especially loved the Nuremberg, Lippizzaner and wine excursions. Everything about the Tulips and Windmills Cruise was great, beginning with the Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Museum and several other museums we visited before the cruise. The ship and our cabin and private deck were spacious and lovely. The service provided by the crew and tour guides was excellent. All meals on the ship and at ports of call were delicious. The entertainment on the ship was great. I can't say enough about all the ports and shore excursions. They were so unique and interesting, we saw so many wonderful things. The Delft Porcelain Ware tour was really interesting watching some of the workers paint on the porcelain and see how all the process was completed. They really made lovely pieces and you could purchase some in the gift shop which I did! The Hoorn walking tour was interesting seeing all the old buildings. I could not walk all the way to the home-hosted visit but my daughter went and enjoyed the visit. I enjoyed sitting on a bench in front of the old church and watched the people go by. It was a lovely morning and I was able to take my time getting back to the ship. The tulips farm was really interesting, seeing how the tulips were harvested, taken to the processing barn and seeing the big automated machine that took the tulips through several operations and ending up fastened in small bunches ready to be shipped and sold. The old windmills were really beautiful. We went to Flanders Fields and one of the ladies from our ship was able to find the grave site of her uncle. This was a very beautiful and moving place to visit. We also visited a Castle, toured it and had a delicious lunch there. The Keukenhof Gardens were beautiful and there were beautiful tulip fields close to the Gardens. We also went to Paris after the cruise and saw Paris by night, did some touring on our own, and went to the Paris Cabaret and saw a wonderful show and has a delicious dinner. Read Less

This was my first Viking Cruise and it exceeded my expectations. This was the Windmills and Tulips tour that included stops in The Netherlands and Belgium. The tours were fun and informative. The ship was wonderful. I loved the intimate feeling of less than 200 passengers...met just about everyone before the trip was finished. Are far too much wonderful food. The staff were helpful, attentive and downright fun!! The opportunities to see the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh museum, Rembrandt House, Flanders Field were once in a lifetime. I also enjoyed the chance to tour a working windmill (although I had to overcome the urge to find a lance and have a Don Quixote moment). And there there were the Tulip gardens. Beautiful! One of my favorite parts of the trip was in Hoorn when we were able to visit a persons home, have coffee and homemade Dutch apple pie and enjoy a great conversation about life in The Netherlands. Then of course The was that awesome moment of enjoying Belgium chocolates and Belgium ales...in BELGIUM!!! Can’t wait for my next trip!!! Read Less

My wife has always wanted to see the Keukenhof Gardens so we selected this cruise. We had never been on a cruise before so we didn't know what to expect but we had a wonderful time. I would do it again -- and, in fact we are planning a Russia cruise on Viking next year. The Baldur is great. We had a mid size cabin with a little balcony, I recommend that since it gives you a bit more room to move around. However, you don't spend that much time in your cabin since there is always something going on. Cabin service was excellent, our steward was wonderful and always made sure that we had what we needed when we needed it. This was true of everyone on board -- very accommodating. The food is awesome and certainly lived up to expectations. I liked the lighter lunch buffets that were available in the lounge area. We took most of out lunches there. The shore excursions were fun and informative, guides were truly top notch. We had several excellent guides but the guy who took us to the Hague and The Mauritshuis was spectacular. All the guides were good but the depth of art knowledge this guy had was amazing. A lot of these guides take their work seriously -- they do it for a living and Viking nailed down some really good ones which made all the difference. Read Less

Viking River Cruises provided a wonderful itinerary for Tulips and Windmills in April 2018. The trip lived up to all of our expectations and then some. Every day was a wonderful adventure. All the ship amenities were wonderful. Our cabin was spacious enough and very comfortable. The meals were outstanding, and the chef went out of his way to accommodate dietary needs of shipboard guests. The ship staff were all lovely people, and they went out of their way to accommodate us. The staff made us feel like they really cared about our well being and took care to provide us with assistance when it was needed. Our trip occurred during the first week of April, and we saw lots of tulips despite cool and rainy weather. We traveled in comfort everywhere on the ship and off on land excursions. The Netherlands and Belgium are two very beautiful countries, and we toured the nicest places in both. The local residents were very gracious, and the sites we visited were wonderful. One of the residents graciously opened his seaside home and invited us in for tea and apple pie. During the visit he shared information with us about his life in that region. We especially enjoyed the scenic Canal rides in Amsterdam, the Airborne Cemetery and Museum in Arnhem, the Church of Our Lady in Bruges, and the famous Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse. Lunch in Haarlem was a lot of fun. This trip was part of a celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Thanks to Viking River Cruises and their wonderful staff, we had a trip of a lifetime. The Netherlands is my favorite destination when I travel. When I saw the "Tulips and Windmills" cruise, I knew I had to sign up. Amsterdam is so beautiful in many ways. The Dutch are delightful and very friendly. Amsterdam has soooo much to see. I've been to Amsterdam at least 7 or more times and I can still find things to do and see. This trip not only spends 3 days in Amsterdam but also some lovely towns I had not been to. So I found myself wanting to go so much, I went by myself. This was the first time I ventured out on my own with Viking. Having sailed with Viking on four previous trips, I knew I could do this! I made my reservation and began planning for the trip. My only fear was "who would I eat dinner with??" Funny how things turn out. The minute I boarded the ship, I met a single woman traveling with a friend. We started talking, hit it off, and Voila! I had some people to eat dinner with and ended up spending time on many of the excursions. Along the way I met a couple from Charleston, South Carolina and all of us became instant friends. In fact, the couple (Suzanne and Andy) and I have already planned and reserved 2 more Viking trips. Needless to say, the trip was fabulous. The food was delightful. I always get the Silver Spirit Package and the drinks are delicious. I ate breakfast in the Aquavit Lounge every morning since it is quiet there and offers a great selection of bread, rolls, meats, yogurt, musli etc. I never felt alone on the trip, not once! Will I do it again with Viking ? You betcha! Read Less

And we enjoyed the optional tour A Taste of Budapest. The Parliament building is truly lovely. And we had some real goulash soup in a local restaurant. The weather was cold and rainy much of the time but we had picture perfect days while cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine Unesco Heritage area. They really did look like you see on TV. The walking tour of Wertheim was also one of our favorite things. We were disappointed that we could not access the walking track for several days due to low bridges on the canal. We were not aware that this would be the case ahead of time. We would not do the pre and post extensions again. The hotels were subject to change so were not what we expected. Read Less

Everything about the Grand European was superior, most especially the level of service provided by the crew. We had wonderful meals, fascinating ports of call and made wonderful friendships. We began the trip with a pre-cruise visit for three days to Prague, a beautiful, classic central European city in the Czech Republic. From there we were taken by bus to Budapest to begin our river cruise. The embarkation went very smoothly and before we knew it we were esconced in our cabin. Our trip took us through Hungary (Budapest), Austria (Vienna, Melk and Salzburg), through a variety of German cities ending in Amsterdam. In each city visited we were given an interesting city tour typically by a local expert and offered a variety of interesting optional tours. Often, prior to our disembarking at each port we were offered a talk about the local culture, history and food. All in all we had an unforgetable trip that I would recommend to anyone. Everything about our Viking experience was outstanding. Read Less

The Grand European Tour was our only choice for first and foremost of all the wonderful testimonials we had heard about Viking. Secondly, this was a cruise through an area of Europe we had only dreamed about. We did explore Amsterdam before we left with Viking assistance. All shore personnel were excellent in every way; no details left out. Everything ran like clock work! The Baldur and the entire crew was beyond measure. Our check in, our cabin every day was perfect, every meal totally delicious and the wines and the bartenders were excellently and the entertainment was fabulous. Every port was exceptional and beyond our wildest dreams. We made so many new friends and several of us have now booked for the 2019 Paris and Heart of Normandy River Cruise. Not thinking about the Autumn time of the year when we booked, we were so thrilled with all the fall foliage along the rivers of Europe. From our disembarkation in Budapest, we traveled on to Prague which is by far the most beautiful city in the world. The Viking crew at our hotel was excellent as was the hotel and their staff. This cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest explored many different cities and countries over 15 days. In every port excellent tours were included and many others available. Special mention to the Activities Director Rob who was fantastic! Beautiful ship, excellent food with perfect service. This was our 2nd Viking River Cruise and the experiences in both were excellent. The pickup at Amsterdam went smoothly and several of us had a very early morning flight(6:30 AM) from Budapest at the end. They had a breakfast for us at a very early hour and when we arrived at the Airport they had staff to direct us and even check us in for our flights. The meals offered excellent variety and quality whether for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. The complimentary wine and beer at Lunch and Dinner were also very good and did not feel shortchanged at all. After a lot of ocean cruises, we were ready for something different and more interesting. Viking lived up to all the good reviews we had read. From reservations and pre-cruise support to air and hotel arrangements, embarkation, cruising and shore excursions everyone was highly organized and very friendly. Our Main Deck cabin was small but pleasant, with small windows at water level, about 5 feet above the floor. Most of the cruising was at night, and in port we often moored alongside other ships, so the value of higher level cabins seems limited, except maybe avoiding noise of passages through locks- which happened 67 times on this route. We liked the food, the shore excursions were mosty very interesting, and we got a lot of walking, sometimes 2 to 5 miles a day depending on time in port. The cruise director and staff were very good, and we liked the fresh Scandanavian decor. Hotels, transfers, and air tickets were all perfectly handled. On this cruise 90 percent of passengers were retired Americans in 60s and 70s, mostly well traveled and intelligent. There were no children and no facilites for them. The ships are well organized but there is no gym or fitness space and rhe “sun deck” cannot be used at all except on the Danube due to low bridges. Free wifi was a plus but as they note often very slow. Anyone with disabilities should not do this, unlike ocean cruising the ship has narrow corridors and tight rooms and requires use of stairs and steeply sloping gangplanks, and German cobblestone- paved towns require a lot of walking and stairs; buses have steep steps and narrow aises and are not acceptable. Even large cities have little or no accommodations for the disabled. The headsets provided for shore excursions were very helpful. In short, this is very enjoyable for older adults who can get around, but I think most chidren or teens would be bored. We were sorry to leave after te cruise and we are certainly looking forward to another Viking cruise. Read Less

There were none on our cruise, I could see our grandchildren bored to tears. Loved the fact that nightly briefings on the next day's port did not include the "buy here or there... we get a kickback" plea. Short, sweet and to the point. This was a bucket list item for my husband and me. It did not disappoint whatsoever! Everything about this trip from the accommodations to the food to the sightseeing was excellent. The staff were attentive and always accommodating. It was so nice to unpack once and stay in the same room for 2 weeks. The ship was attractive and comfortable, and we liked the small intimate size (around 200 passengers) versus a large ship with 2000 passengers. Onboard entertainment was fun and guest entertainment in various ports was interesting. There was an included excursion in every port and the staff were awesome as far as organizing transportation to and from the tour site, giving us water and umbrellas and greeting us upon our return with a refreshment as we boarded. We stayed extra time in Amsterdam before the cruise as well as time in Budapest after. We arranged our own pre and post accommodations which worked out well and was very worthwhile. We wanted to celebrate our 40th anniversary with a different cruise. Had been on several Ocean Cruises and heard only wonderful things about River Cruises. We planned the trip with friends who were also celebrating their Anniversaries. Trish was a delight to book with, was able to answer all of our questions prior to booking. State rooms are small, but very functional. Food was excellent and so was entertainment on board. We took included tours and they were all great. Really appreciated the tour talks, as they were very informative about the city we were docking next, not about where the shopping was, which was most appreciated. Staff were wonderful, from the Customer Service, to the Room Stewards and the Restaurant Staff. The inclusions of wine, beer and soft beverages at lunch and dinner; water when we would leave on a tour and umbrellas if it was raining, certainly helped to minimize additional costs on board. This was our first river cruise, and we've already booked another one for 2018. The ship was immaculately clean; the service was impeccable; the crew was brilliant at reading their guests--very friendly when engaged, yet providing unobtrusive and personalized service when we were involved in conversation/activities with other guests. It was wonderful to unpack once and have the "hotel" travel with us, enabling us to visit many cities without the hassle of hauling our bags, arranging transportation, settling in to new accommodations or getting our bearings each day. Having shore excursions planned in advance of the trip put us at our leisure, especially because it was all arranged for us and all we needed to do was disembark at the appointed time! The Activities Director gave a "port talk" every evening before dinner, and there was also a "daily news" left in our cabins each evening--both outlining the onboard activities and tours for the next day. Each of these allowed us to take our cruise one day at a time without having to keep track of multi-day schedules. There were just under 200 guests on our ship, which was just the right number to get to know fellow travelers. The dining room was mostly furnished with oval tables for 6--just the right size for everyone to be engaged in the conversation, and if someone was a bit shy around strangers, they would easily be included in this intimate setting. The food was excellent, as was expected, but the variety provided at every meal, including the option of a lighter meal served on deck, was an added treat. Getting to know other guests during shared meals made it easy to continue conversations on the tours. With up to four choices of excursions each day, it was likely you would already know some of the people in your tour group. We went on all of the included tours with few exceptions, and they were each excellent. Each guest had a small, remote listening device and earbuds which enabled us to hear the tour guide no matter where we were within the group. It was possible to wander a good distance from the group (photo shots) and still hear the guide. Our only disappointment on the whole trip were two of our all day, optional excursions, and, unfortunately, these were the most expensive of the trip! The day trip to Salzburg was a very long bus ride for a hurried walking tour through the historic district and what was a nice lunch with actors performing songs from The Sound of Music. That's it. Very expensive. Another optional day tour included Waltzing Vienna (not a pleasant experience) and a difficult tour of the Shonbrunn Palace because it was SO crowded--I was envious of other tourists who were maneuvering through the crowds at their own pace following personal audio tours. The Modern Aristocracy day tour was worth the price. I very much enjoyed the Art/Bunker Tour in Nuremberg while my husband said the same of his Nuremberg Trial Tour. Most of the tour guides were engaging and delightfully entertaining. There was an opportunity to rate each guide, and I'm sorry I didn't do this on a daily basis to ensure the truly excellent guides would continue to be engaged by Viking. By the end of the cruise, I remembered the guide, but without the guide's name or matching it with the city, my review was worthless. The onboard activities were well planned. During the cruise of the castle district, the activities director provided intermittent commentary on the top deck which added interest to this relaxing afternoon of cruising with cocktails. The glassblower was both informative and entertaining. There was music and dancing and other fun in the lounge every evening after dinner. On demand movies in the cabin provided entertainment for quiet, down time. I think these cruises are most enjoyable for a couple/two people. We met two groups of 2 couples who were traveling together. They didn't interact much with the other guests, and when we joined one of these groups for dinner, it was obvious they'd known each other for so long that they had no new conversation. I couldn't help wondering if they would have had more fun if they'd been traveling alone. We also met sisters from North Carolina and sisters from Australia who clearly were having a great time, and I know I would enjoy one of these cruises with my sister, as well. Read Less
