I have always wanted to see the area of Germany and Austria during the Christmas season, so we decided a great way to do this was on a cruise down the Danube. The ship was incredibly comfortable, the crew was top notch and as friendly as if you had known them for years. Our cabin was large enough for the two of us to move around and not constantly be in each other's way, the bathroom was small but not so small it was hard to do what you needed to do. The housekeeping staff left nothing to chance, they took care of the room as if it were their own. The food can only be describe as gourmet, every meal was delicious and elegant. The wines they server were perfect with every different dish they served. The activities on the boat were quite fun, but not extensive or elaborate. Games in the lounge were fun and many cruisers would get involved. The shore excursions were wonderful, you learned so much about the places you visited, and the scenery was breathtaking. We will definitely be going again in the future, in my mind the river cruise is much more personal and more intimate than an ocean cruise. Read Less

Our cruise was the Christmas Market Cruise on the Danube from Budapest to Nuremberg in late December 2015. The boat was a Viking Baldur, not the Njord as originally scheduled because the Njord had some sort of mechanical problem. But the Baldur was delightful, made more so by our occupancy of one of the two owners' cabins on the stern. The food was terrific and the service was superb. The itinerary was great, and the land tours were well organized and led, and interesting. The only downside on the whole trip was that Viking did not tell us (if they knew) that the Christmas Markets in Germany close on 12/23 so we missed seeing some of them toward the end of the trip. After the cruise terminated in Nuremberg we took the extension to Prague which was well worth it. Viking did a very good job in maintaining a warm and friendly environment during this trip -- which is a major reason we keep coming back to Viking. This was our fifth Viking river cruise. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas market cruise. We went in the middle of December and added a few days in Budapest. We did not have the opportunity to explore Passau, but the embarkation process went very smoothly. The rooms are efficiently designed and there was plenty of room for clothes etc. The ship staff from the first person you met to laundry personnel were wonderful. The food was excellent and the evening entertainment was fun and engaging. After a day or so, the wait staff learns your preferences and everything is there, just as you like it. We met many great people which made our holiday extra special. As usual, the guides in each port were very knowledgeable and friendly. We spent Christmas Eve in Vienna, and attended a Concert that was a medley of opera and ballet. It was excellent. To get to and from the venue we drove through the city and the lights and decorations were spectacular. Adding the extra days in Budapest was also a great choice. The city is easy to navigate, and the drivers were friendly. We used the bus system which was adequate for the places we visited. There are many great restaurants and cafes, and of course the Christmas markets were beautiful and festive. It was a great way to celebrate the holiday. We would recommend this cruise, and perhaps we will take it again. We would definitely use the Viking Line again. This was our second river cruise and we plan to use the line again. Read Less

After having taken several ocean cruises, we took our first river cruise in November2015. We went on this river cruise to see the Christmas markets in Eorope. We very much enjoyed seeing all the markets along the way and The small towns on our river cruise. The people were wonderful and the sites all very interesting. The crew on our ship were all very friendly and extremely helpful in anything we needed. The cabin was small but well thought out with lots of storage. The bathroom was surprisingly larger than expected with a heated floor.....very nice. On all of our shore excursions, we were well informed and yet had plenty of time to explore on our own. The food on ship was outstanding with something different each meal. We very much enjoyed the local offerings on Austrian night. The entertainment was superb as well. As it was close to Christmas, there were many enjoyable Christmas activities for the passengers. One of these was decorating the Christmas Tree in the lounge area. The piano player in the lounge was superb and played selections that everyone could enjoy. Our cruise director "clause" was well organized in his daily presentations and kept everything on schedule. One very big concern we did have , was a lack of security of people coming and going from the ship while in dock. We felt there should have been better control of who comes on board the ship. My husband felt with all the events that have happened around the world, security should have been a little more Read Less

Viking definitely provides a 5-star experience! This was my first Viking adventure and I will surely go on another. We traveled aboard the Viking Baldur which was very nice and clean, rooms were well appointed and provided everything needed. The only time I spent in my stateroom was to sleep, I don't cruise to sit in my room!!!! The water level was low in Budapest so we could not board our boat there but were bused to Vienna where we boarded. We spent one night in a beautiful 4-star hotel in Budapest and provided free dinner and breakfast the next day. Viking even provided a river boat cruise the first evening down the Danube in Budapest, since we were not on our Viking boat. They made sure that we did not miss any part of the planned adventure even though we were not on our boat the first night. I particularly enjoyed the cruise because there were less than 200 passengers and a small crew that we were able to get to know during our week together. The Captain was in the atrium as we disembarked from the boat the last day, saying goodbye to passengers. He gave me a hug and we took a selfie! Food was delicious, wine and beer was included with lunch and dinner, at no charge. Service was delightful. There was no formal night and dress onboard the ship was casual, most dressed in slacks for the evening meal although I did notice jeans and tshirts on a couple of folks even at night. In the evening at almost every port, someone from the area came aboard and shared aspects of the local culture to include food, drink, dancing, music, discussions etc. Also included in the price of the river cruise was a daily bus and walking tour of the city in which we were docked. The guides of these tours were from the local community and were very knowledgeable. Because the tour involved a lot of walking, they made sure to accommodate those who were unable to walk as fast and provided a second guide for those who toured at a slower pace This was one of my favorite trips ever!!!! This was our first river cruise and we loved it. The people of Viking were the most accommodating of any cruise we've ever taken. Everyone, no exceptions, was there to make the experience the best you've ever had. The only glitch was about half way through the cruise, low water made it necessary for us to switch ships to continue the cruise. We packed our suitcases and left in the morning for a bus trip. That afternoon when we got to our new ship, all of our suitcases were in our cabins ready to unload. VERY WELL EXECUTED by Viking. The daily tours were a challenge for people with limited mobility, but once again, Viking had tours to accommodate these people, us included. The dining room service was exceptional and the food was as good as any cruise line we have been on. The cabin was smaller than we expected and creative unpacking solved the situation. The "French balcony" was a good selection. Read Less

Have to admit this was our first cruise of any kind. We had a fantastic time on the Baldur!! the crew was amazing. Jens, the Hotel manager was always available. The crew was friendly and very obliging. A special shout out to Jackson and Pamela for taking such good care of us in the Dining Room each night! Out Tour Director was Claus...who came in as a last minute replacement. He was so knowledgeable and has the patience of a saint! Low river levels continued along the Danube. we knew beforehand that it was a possibility that we would have to change ships due to this problem. Unfortunately we did...but the change over was seamless. Viking handled everything and we entered into the Viking Magni through crew members shouting hello! Of course no one wanted to have to repack but it could not be helped. Viking had no control over this situation. As a special treat Viking paid for all the guests to attend the Vienna Symphony concert...what a lovely night that was! Each port along the way was beautiful! The guides- for the most part- were very nice and had an amazing amount of knowledge about the cities and towns. Some days we had a guided tour in the morning and then the afternoon free to explore on your own. My husband and I especially enjoyed this aspect. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The cabin, though small, was comfortable. Large bed...delightful! Bathroom was small but efficient. Now the food...unreal! Both ships had Chefs that were outstanding and very willing to make anything special. I do not eat much meat and every night there was a vegetarian meal available..including the appetizer! One evening, Chef George on the Magni, made me a special appetizer! The table of 8 with whom we ate was over the moon with the food! The breakfast buffet was endless...Lunch could be eaten in the Dining Room or up in the Lounge.. The view of Budapest at night was stunning...a definite must see! Our flight back to NY through Muncih was leaving at 6AM.. Viking had us on the bus by 3;30..after giving us breakfast! My husband and I would not hesitate to cruise with Viking again. In fact we look forward to it! It was worth every penny! Read Less

2015 saw our first river cruise of what promises to be many. My wife and I had probably the best vacation that we have ever had. We had previously experienced Ocean cruises but we found this to be the most relaxing and most enjoyable ever. We made some new friends on the 1st day, who we spent most of the 14 days with. Our trip was unfortunately split between 2 longships, the Baldur and the Magni. The reason for this was the low water level on the Danube. We were warned ahead of the trip that this might happen. However this in no way dramatically altered our overall review of this trip. Both Embarkation and Disembarkation were seamless. All staff were very helpful and considerate to our needs. The cabin was extremely well appointed and maintained very well on a daily basis. All of the staff on board were fabulous and very attentive to our needs. Our hotel manager Jens and Tour director Claus were very patient and incredible. The dining room staff and chef were outstanding. In fact the overall review of Viking's organization and attention to detail in caring for everyone on board was first class. All excursions in the ports along the way were beautiful! The tour guides were very nice and very knowledgeable about the cities and towns and their history. The freedom to explore on our own was appreciated and allowed us to investigate other interests. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The onboard demonstrations and talks were very informative and enjoyable. Our first thoughts on arriving at our destination was "lets do it again". Several previous customers have indicated that Viking is a "Class Act" and both my wife and I have to agree. We loved this trip so much that we have booked a Portugal trip next March with 2 of the friends we made on this trip. Congratulations on an excellent organization. Read Less

Back yesterday from 14 glorious nights on the Viking Baldur/ and Magni. It was our very first cruise ever..to celebrate my retirement and our 30th Anniversary. We arrived in Amsterdam late as the airport was fogged in...regret we didn't get a chance to see the city at all. But nor regrets after that! Can't say enough about the crew and staff...our Hotel manager Jens was fabulous as was Claus, our Tour Director. The chef and wait staff were outstanding. A special shout out to Jackson and Pamela who took such care of our table every night!!!! We knew going in that the water levels were quite low but Viking was hoping that our cruise would be the first all season to make it all the way through to Budapest. Unfortunately that was not to be. We eventually had to repack and were bused to Nuremburg to pick up the new ship-the Viking Magni. However, it was a seamless transfer and Viking handled everything so smoothly! Each day brought new delights! the tours were very well orchestrated and we never had an overly large tour group. The guides were very well versed. The cathedrals, castles, monasteries and fortresses were all amazing. The highlight was a Concert in Vienna! Sailing into Budapest at night was spectacular! It is not to be missed! The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious. The Chefs on both ships were so talented. As a non-meat eater I was pleased that there were vegetarian entrees at both lunch and dinner. If I wanted something different it was no problem. We met so many wonderful people on board as well...The dinner is open seating but we managed to sit each night with 3 couple we met the first night. What fun we had! Be prepared to eat and drink...many times a day! Even some special afternoon treats some days! If you are debating whether to take this cruise -do it! You will have a lifetime of memories! Read Less

Three days before leaving we received an email stating the Baldur would not make it to Budapest in time for our departure due to low water levels. We were to meet the Viking Magni. Upon our early arrival at the airport, we were met by Viking representatives and transported by van to the Magni. We were warmly welcomed aboard, and were surprised to hear that they knew we had an early flight and that our stateroom was ready! Our luggage was quickly brought to our room. The Magni crew was fantastic - always smiling and eager to help. Rebecca, the Hotel Manager; Rares, the Dining Room Manager; and especially Caitlyn, the Program Director, helped to make this a memorable experience. Special thanks to Radi, the Concierge, who went above and beyond doing double duty after Caitlyn was injured. Others who gave us superb service were Danisa, our room stewardess; Maurice, Cesar, Milo, Faye, and Blagoje in the dining room and Terrace. They seemed to anticipate our needs before we even asked. The excursions were well organized and very informative. The local guides were well versed and able and eager to answer all questions. The food was delicious. There was never a problem if you wanted to try something extra or swap an item. Chef George informed us of the menu each night prior to dinner and gave his recommendations. A highlight was a tour led by Chef George and Radi of the farmer's market in Vienna. Unfortunately, we did have to change ships after Passau. This meant one day taking a 1-1/2 hour bus ride to Regensburg, and the next day a three hour bus ride to Nuremberg. After our day in Nuremberg, we were brought to our new ship - the Baldur. The crew was on deck to greet us with chants of "Welcome Home". We were also greeted with warm towels and drinks. Our luggage was already in our stateroom waiting for us. Viking did its best to make this a seamless transition. As this was our first river cruise, we were not sure what to expect. Viking surpassed all our expectations. Looking forward to another cruise! We are cruise junkies but were looking for a very relaxed, small ship experience. The Viking team fulfilled all our expectations. We loved the way that we docked right in the center of each of the cities visited. Each evening, before dinner, all the passengers met in the lounge where the Cruise Director prepared us for the next day's port call and the Executive Chef talked about what he found in the market that day for the night's dinner. Lovely touch. Even when we had to switch ships at Passau (a frequent occurrence due to low water) Viking took us on an extended excursion for the day and then on to the new ship where our luggage was already waiting in the cabin. Viking made the change so smoothly that we had to look twice to make sure that we hadn't returned to the original ship. We enjoyed Viking River Cruises so much that we have now booked our next cruise with Viking Ocean Cruises. Read Less

The first words that come to mind about Viking are, "what a class act!" Our 15-day Grand European cruise on the Baldur was so absolutely wonderful! Although we have been on many ocean cruises, this was our first river cruise and we did not know what to expect. We should have expected the best because that is certainly what we got! We had a rough start what with missing flights and being dropped off at the wrong boat but we were fortunate that our hotel manager Yens spotted us lugging our luggage and from then on we were in wonderful hands. I cannot say enough about the attentive service we experienced. The dining was excellent and we enjoyed tasting the different dishes from the areas we were visiting as well as the local wines. The music was wonderful; we had fun dancing in the evening. The ports and shore excursions were excellent although we had some very hot days during Europe's heat wave. I have only positive things to say about the cruise and professional personnel. Even our disembarkation was spot on. I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise and Viking to anyone and have already done so. Read Less

I recently travelled from Budapest to Amsterdam with my Mum on the Viking Baldur. What a fabulous trip! Everything about the ship was wonderful, from our cabin (though on the small side), to the lounge and bar, the main dining room, the sundeck and the Aquavit Terrace. The crew were just amazing, with the most attentive service and always with a smile, nothing was ever too much trouble. The shore excursions and tour guides were well organised and always of interest and we were fortunate to have mostly fantastic weather. Free Wi Fi was a bonus and mostly worked very well. The onboard entertainment and information talks were great, with something for everyone from a glass blowing demonstration, apple strudel making demonstration, dancers, singers, a trivia night, Viennese coffee culture, the European Union and more. When there was no specific entertainment we were always entertained by our pianist, Laslow (I think that's how you spell his name). And he played during lunch and cocktail hour every day as well. The meals were just awesome! Full buffet breakfast of 5 star hotel quality, lunch in the dining room or out on the terrace and 4 course dinner in the dining room. Snacks and tea/coffee available all day. Our cruise included the Silver Service drinks package which meant unlimited drinks from the bar of whatever we wanted. I would absolutely recommend Viking based on our experience and would cruise with them again in a heartbeat. Read Less

Our first cruise ever and it was beyond all expectations. We pre stayed two days in Budapest at the Hilton over looking the Danube and had a relaxing time to get our clocks straightened out before the actual cruise. Boarded the Baldur and the adventure began. The service and shore excursions were all excellent with lots of free time to explore on your own. The food on board was 5 star from breakfasts to wonderful dinners. Most nights there was entertainment in the lounge as we sailed along. The shore excursions were very good with local guides being very informative. So much to see. Getting on and off the boat was so easy with Viking taking care of our luggage both times both to and from the airport. In all the trip was a five star plus and would highly recommend this trip to any body who would like to see a lot of Europe in a most relaxing way. Thank you Viking. Everything was first class. From the arrival at the boat and 4 men in red shirts met our taxi and just took over the unloading of our many bags. Their comment was "this is your vacation". So special. It only got better from there. Hotel manager was lovely and our concierge was amazing, Radi. Nothing was too much trouble ever. Our lady who cleaned our room was fantastic and quick. You never knew she was there. A Miracle of housekeeping. The food was superior and varied. We actually had the chef teach us about making strudel from scratch. Also a tour of the galley. Which for me was a real treat! When you see the ads on the tv it really happens just like the ad. A dream come true. We had a veranda stateroom and enjoyed the ongoing view immensely. Right down to the locals fishing on the banks of the rivers. Special dietary needs were met with a professionalism and grace at all times. The Stewards in the dining room were exceptional. There was one fella who seemed to be the cheerleader for them all. One time the ship was late to pick us up at a destination and the crew was on the balcony facing the shore as they pulled up with a sign made of letters that said "Welcome Home". Now that was special they were even doing a little dance. Just one note of how special they all made us feel. I had a medical issue and nothing was too much trouble. Radi the concierge actually came with us to the emergency at the hospital. We felt secure at all times. It is very nice when on day two the staff at the desk know which stateroom you are in. The extra attention to detail when we were coming and going from the boat on tours was much appreciated. Actually we can't say enough good things about the Viking Baldur. We will visit Viking Cruises agin in the near future!! Read Less

Although we had a rocky start to our trip because of missed airline connections and consequently delayed luggage, we loved the accommodations at the Hotel Movenpick in Amsterdam. We had been to Amsterdam previously, and we were very happy to have the extra couple of days before the cruise. We walked to the dock and checked in on the Viking Baldur. We are veteran Viking cruisers, and we found our cabin to be as lovely as ever. Comfortable beds, nice amenities, the veranda - all excellent. The food was spectacular; the service outstanding. Our cruise director was knowledgeable, entertaining and quite competent. We ran into some lock delays on the rivers, and the Viking crew did not miss a beat in arranging alternate plans for our shore excursions. We particularly loved visiting ports we wouldn't normally have traveled to if we were on a land tour. The time in Nuremberg was extraordinarily haunting in re-visiting Nazi history. The optional activities were varied and wonderful. We have always enjoyed our Viking cruises in many parts of the world. We recommend them highly. The value is terrific. You can't go wrong! Read Less

Our cruise on the Viking Baldur is the best. Service is friendly and phenomenal. They anticipate any needs that you might want or need. Examples: on a warm day on the sun deck, a server came up with glasses of water; on a cooler and breezy day while sailing a beautiful section of the Rhine, the hotel director brought up blankets and the maitre d' brought up to the sun deck while we enjoying the spectacular views. The housekeeping and the housekeepers are often the unsung heroes. The ship is immaculate! When arriving aboard and being tired and exhausted from our flight from hell, we were greeted with warm washcloths that so welcome. When leaving the ship for shore excursions, you are handed bottles of water and when you return are welcomed back with a beverage. The dining room service is excellent. The included shore excursions are very and they also offer a variety of interesting optional excursions. The Viking daily is on your bed at turn down service, so that you can plan your day. We had a great time celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and marking two things off our buckets lists - visiting Germany and taking a cruise! We appreciated that all the arrangements and costs are included. We added the pre-cruise option and spent time exploring Nuremberg. The hotel there was a wonderful older building full of charm. We walked through the city, ate at a bistro and found a city wide market was held that weekend. The accommodations on board were wonderful, the service outstanding, the atmosphere could not have been better. The room had ample area for us to relax if we wanted to stay on board. We enjoyed the cultural events on board, as well as the organized tours on shore. It was exciting to try the food from the region, the meals were always relaxed and almost a family type atmosphere easily allowing you to meet new friends, but the meals were far from ordinary. We were treated as if we were the focus of a team set to meet our every need. We plan to take another cruise with Viking as soon as possible. We had the unique experience of hearing the cathedral bell "Fat Peter" ring when we arrived in port on a religious holiday. Each port had something unique to see and learn about, especially the WW@ memorial. I especially loved seeing the tulip fields and touring the Keukenhof gardens - what majestic beauty! while my husband checked out the cigar shops in Amsterdam. One of the stewards even found him a unique cigar from the area. So many one of a kind experiences that we will hold onto for the rest of our lives. Read Less

Our 8 Day Viking river cruise started in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We had taken a transatlantic cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette to get to Amsterdam, and as luck would have it, the Silhouette berthed in the place that our river cruise ship, the Viking Baldur, normally docked. This necessitated that the Baldur temporarily dock at a remote pier in Amsterdam until the Silhouette departed. We had been told we could walk to our Viking ship, but due to this situation had to take a taxi to find where the Baldur had berthed. Our taxi driver was excellent, and after asking a few river cruise ship crews, quickly got us to the Baldur. Due to the early hour, around 9 AM, the Baldur was still in the process of off-loading previous passengers, but nonetheless we were greeted at the pier by Caitlyn, our Cruise Director. She gave us a warm welcome and directed to leave our luggage and have a seat/coffee in the lounge and relax until our cabin was ready. Since the Baldur was parked in a rather remote location, Viking had arranged a free shuttle bus to transport passengers hourly between the ship and the center of Amsterdam. Two of these shuttle trips included a short city tour, and after getting in our cabin and having a bite to eat, we decided to take the 1:30 city tour. We had a wonderful guide who gave us a short, but interesting tour of the central part of Amsterdam. It started to rain during the tour and we were eager to get back to the comfort of the Baldur. The Baldur is one of Viking’s newer “Longships”. It has 95 outside staterooms including: river view, French balcony, veranda, veranda suite, and Explorer Suite cabins. The Baldur has three decks and our cabin was on the middle deck. We had booked a French balcony cabin that had a sliding glass door that opened to the river, but no veranda. We feel this is the best value, as you really have little time to spend in your cabin. This is good because the cabin only measured 135 sq/ft compared to our 194 sq/ft Silhouette cabin. We had to quickly get our luggage under the bed in able to move around the cabin. The bathroom was small, but efficient, and I was even able to get my 6’ 3” body into the small shower that had excellent water pressure. All in all, we made due. After stowing our luggage, we made our way to the Lounge for our 6:15 Welcome Briefing from Caitlyn and the Hotel Manager Jens Wehrenberg. The talk was brief and we were quickly invited to move downstairs to the Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was very modern, but comfortable and we were welcomed by the Chef and wait staff. We quickly befriended two Filipino waiters (Ryan & Darwin) who took care of our every need throughout the cruise. We had been told during the Welcome briefing that there was a large group from Canada on board, and they had special seating at the front of the restaurant. While we always knew they were there, they rarely got too noisy. The meals were excellent with a different menu every day. Breakfasts and lunches were a combination of menu/buffet items and dinners included local/regional specialties such as white asparagus which was in season for our cruise. For breakfast and lunch you could also eat off a buffet set up in the Aquavit Terrace/Lounge area. White and red wines as well as beer was complimentary and plentiful. I prefer a rose wine, and found that was also available. You can also bring your own wine on board and drink it at meals with no corkage fee. The ship provides a piano player/singer who entertained us in the lounge during lunch, happy hour, and after dinner unless there was a special event scheduled. He played a wide variety of enjoyable music and really added to the ambiance of the cruise. We were exhausted after a busy day and after a quick visit to the lounge retired to our stateroom for a comfortable night’s rest. Morning came too quickly, and after a great breakfast (7:00 – 9:30), we had an 8:30 Safety briefing including our life vests on the upper outer deck. After the safety briefing we joined the complimentary Amsterdam bus and canal boat tour. This was an excellent and thorough tour of Amsterdam. We returned to the ship for lunch and later took a local tram into town to tour the Anne Frank House. We had purchased tickets online 6 weeks earlier and were able to get right in, or we would have had to wait in line for up to two-three hours. After the tour we had a beer at a local place and headed back to the ship for dinner. At 7:00 PM our Captain, Rainer Lembck, had a welcome toast followed by a Port Talk about the following day’s events and schedules. After dinner, Viking provided a Dutch Folklore show in the Lounge. The Baldur left Amsterdam at 10:45 PM. The following days were filled with visits to places such as Nijmegen and the National War and Resistance Museum, Cologne and its magnificent Cathedral, Cochem and the imposing Reichsburg Castle, Marksburg and it’s 700 year old fortress, picturesque Rudesheim where we ate dinner in a local restaurant with live music and dancing, and historic Heidelberg with it’s university atmosphere and imposing hilltop castle. Each day also included daily port briefings by Caitlyn, as well as special evening events in the Lounge. I think our favorite day was Friday when we spent the afternoon cruising the Upper Middle Rhine Valley viewing magnificent castles and vineyards and a continuing narrative by Caitlyn of what we were seeing. The weather was perfect for sitting on the Sun Deck and enjoying the 360 degree views. We also enjoyed several lunches in the Aquavit Terrace which is a semi-enclosed terrace at the front of the ship. On nice days they open up the terrace doors and even use the ship barbeque. The ship and its facilities were very comfortable. The small size compared to ocean cruise ships made it very easy to meet a great number of the other passengers. Other features we liked included the free internet, complimentary wine and beer, and the very well done included tours. We had heard that river cruises were for older cruisers, but we would dispute this because of the early schedules and the fact that quite a few of the tours required quite strenuous walks and stair climbs in castles. We wished there had been more nice flat churches to tour. A review would not be complete without mentioning the service. We felt the service and crew were excellent. It seemed as if after the first day, the crew knew everyone and our favorite food and drinks. Every member of the crew has multiple duties, and everyone helps including the Hotel Director and Food Director. One day the entire crew was waiting for our return from a tour with cheers and welcome signs. This made us feel very special. Most of the crew works months without a day off, and still greet you every morning with a smile. The Cruise Director was also excellent. Every event was on time and well executed. As I mentioned a bit earlier, the small size of the ship makes it easy to meet most members of the crew. Overall our river cruise was excellent. Our 7 night 8 day cruise cost us $3110 p/p. This is about six times more expensive than our Transatlantic cruises which include a larger veranda cabin, but does not include free beverages and tours. If you can afford a river cruise, or want to see some of the beautiful cities and scenery included in a specific river cruise, you should do it; but if you are looking for value cruising with above average food and service, you probably want to stick with ocean cruising. We had cruised on the Viking Bragi in 2013 for 15 days - Budapest to Amsterdam. It was wonderful so we booked a shorter cruise on part of the same river. We really prefer river cruising. We flew into Brussels and spent three days in Brugge. The Viking representative from the airport was very nice and informative. He let me sit up front so he could point out the area where my grandmother grew up. The guide in Brugge was exceptional too. We truly love sitting on the top deck watching the scenery or relaxing on our veranda. We don't typically stay up late so we did not see the entertainment. The ship was beautiful and very clean. We upgraded to a suite this time it was soooo worth the extra money. Many of our new friends came by to check out our cabin. The service was awesome on board ship. We only experienced one disappointing instance with the cruise director when he would not allow my husband and I to ride one of the excursion buses into town. We were unable to walk , what turned out to be about a mile, into the town for the walking tour. There was a bus going to the castle that went right through the town and he would not let us ride it. He said he would call us a taxi at our expense. It wasn't about the money...it was about customer service. We chose to stay on the ship. Read Less

our second cruise with Viking Cruises. Easily as good as the first a year before in a similar area. The staff are excellent, attentive but not in any way obsequious. We had fabulous excursions, restful times on board with fabulous views. What more can one say. Try it for yourselves. Appropriate activities about the areas we were in, clog dancing, local music, or a talk about the trip or from some one local about a specific subject. The ship well furnished, cabins are spacious and well equipped. Food was good, portions ideal given the regularity of meals. Nice to able to get decent coffee and tea between meals and home baked biscuits. Cabin staff were helpful, and very friendly - nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to all, we will be back, some saving up to be done first. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we had no previous experiece to use as a criterion for this one. We chose Viking instead of one of its competitors because of its reputation as the most expensive cruise line, and the best. The ship was a real surprise for several reasons. Our stateroom was one of the aft cabins and we had misgivings about the engine noise before we ever did any cruising. Those new engines were virtually silent and we never heard them or felt them. The ship itself was very easy to get around and conveniently designed for its passengers, but the best part of our experience was the ship's crew. They were superb in every area. They were always pleasant and warm from the lowest member of the crew we encountered to the Captain himself. It was interesting to see how engaged he was in the sailing process and we saw him frequently out an among the passengers and crew. Of particular note was Jens, our Hotel Manager. He was fabulous. Always available to both the crew and passengers, always smiling, alway responsive to everybody. If I owned a cruise line I would immediately make him the commodore because he was perfect in every way. Above all else, the food services were remarkably good and equal to the best hotels we have ever stayed anywhere in the world. The food was delicious, beautifully presented at every meal, fresh and delicious, generously served and plated perfectly. The waiters, waitresses and bar personnel were friendly, efficient, and very well-trained, without exception. We never received an inferior meal or service that was less than perfect. We have told everyone we know that "A Viking cruise is the only way to go," and all of our future cruising will be with Viking's superb fleet and excellent crews. Thanks to all of you. Read Less

This was our first Viking River Cruise and we depending strongly on reviews to choose our trip. In the course of our week long cruise we found that most of the other passengers had taken a previous river cruise with Viking. We found that we'd have to agree with their confidence. The first point to mention is that most of the Viking Long Ships are very new. The ship we sailed on, the Viking Baldur, was about a year and half old. The accommodations are functional and nice, if not overly large. There is a lot of attention to comfort and small touches to making time in the room pleasant. Don't expect to spend a lot of time in the room. The food was plentiful and nicely done. The service staff was so good that it added to the enjoyment of our meals and I cannot say enough in praising all of the staff in helping to make our trip better. We arranged a private side trip that deviated from the cruise schedule and the concierge did a very good job in helping us plan the side trip. The activities were very good with only a couple of minor suggestions for improvement. We were on the Legends of the Rhine cruise. The second day featured a trip to a World War II museum in Overloon, The Netherlands. If you are a war buff you might find it enjoyable, but I think the general reaction was that there was probably a better way to spend the time. The other minor suggestion is that on an excursion to Remagen, which was new on the tour, we arrived in time to visit a historic church, but the tour guide made that the end of the tour in that city. That meant the church had closed. It would have been easy to begin at the church since the bus was parked a block away. The tour guides were knowledgeable and there was often free time to explore on our own. I might have enjoyed extra time in some of the cities we visited, particularly Cochem and Heidelberg, but the tour company cannot anticipate differences in what all their customers will find most interesting. It should be noted that we began in Amsterdam and finished our cruise in Frankfurt. People making the cruise the following week did the trip in reverse, beginning in Frankfurt. Read Less

Our 30thieth anniversary needed to be something special and the advertisements for Viking Cruises looked as if a river cruise would fit the bill. Booking was easy and talking with Walter and making the arrangements was an indication that this trip would be well planned and flawless. It was. We started with 2 days in Bruges before boarding the Baldur in Amsterdam. Everything was taken care of from our arrival at the airport in Brussells to checking into our hotel. The tours were interesting and informative and we didn't think things could get better. When we boarded the longboat in Amsterdam our expectations were exceeded. The stateroom was roomy and comfortable and the lounge and other public rooms were beautiful and inviting. The food was incredible and the wine was so good I was glad it kept flowing at dinner. Our tours at the stops along the Rhine were conducted by tour guides who knew their history as well as exciting stories to tell at each turn. We enjoyed the company of many different people on board at meals and evening activities. The saddest part was realizing that the trip was ending. Everyone on board had done their utmost to make us comfortable and feel pampered and the staffs attention to detail was evident. It was a trip well worth the money and the perfect memory for our 30 years together! Read Less
