I loved it. I love the river cruise because we are in a different port everyday. Plenty of free time to go out on your own. I am a huge history buff so being in Europe was awesome. I love it because on the river boat they are small and you get to meet all the other passengers. I found that it was every easy going and felt very at home. The crew was the best. The food was the best. I bought the extra drink package. That was a good deal. I could come back on board from site seeing and have a nice cold beer from the region. I live in Milwaukee WI so I had the best time trying the Belgium beers and German beers. Then I would get a late night cocktail before I went to bed. I don't like being on a cruise ship when you spend so many days at sea. You don't have that problem on a river cruise. It is the only way to go. The crew so so great and attentive and I think that is because you have a smaller group of passengers. I was on a cruise ship four years ago with a few thousand people, a couple of pools, bars, restaurants etc and I didn't have nearly as fun as I did on the Wind Mill and Tulips river cruise. I am hoping to come back to Europe in 2018 and do another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

The Tulips & Windmills river cruise had been recommended to my 3 travel partners by a mutual friend and they invited me to complete the four-some. I reluctantly agreed due to the cost of the cruise, but it was definitely a great trip. The crew were so friendly, professional and very accommodating. The program director and tour guides were excellent and provided a wealth of information. The tours and sites were very interesting and provided a great balance of organized and free time. The food was delicious! Meal times were celebrations! The size of the ship and hence number of passengers made it a very personal trip and provided the opportunity to meet and visit with many of the guests. I really enjoyed the convenience of not having to pack up and move to another hotel every day or so. The local musicians and speakers provided a sense of connection with the regions that we toured. The opportunity to visit in the home of residents of the city was a highlight of this travel experience. Read Less

My deceased husband's brother & wife invited my daughter & I to go on this trip with them. My husband & I have lived for a while in the Netherlands and was anxious to return. I loved the service of all the ships employees and the cleanliness of everything. The service in dining room, cabin, & entertainment was far above excellent. When embarking on a walking tour in one town, I realized that I was not going to be able to do it (I am handicapped) after about one block, I turned to go back the ship when an employee volunteered to get a wheelchair for me and then push me all through the walking tour. I was unbelievably grateful for that kindness as I really wanted to see some of the places that my husband & I used to visit while living here. The dining room service was outstanding with the employees being extremely friendly, always remembered your name, what you like to drink or eat, and where in the room you preferred to sit and with whom, they were very funny as well as entertaining. The food was also the greatest. In the lounge the bartender always remembered your name, what you like to drink and your cabin number. The evening entertainment was always fun and various talks were extremely interesting and informative. The ports of call, while I have been to all of them many times while living here, were great and the tour guides were extremely informative. It is wonderful to have to only unpack once and yet travel several countries. I do not feel as though I missed much of the country while sailing at night and spending all day on shore. It was a wonderful first river cruise experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would and have recommended this river cruise and company to several people. You are able to get close to the sites and to see whatever there is to see on both sides of the ship while sailing. The long boat does not hold thousands of people, which is wonderful and makes everything much more personal. We traveled on the Baldur and were very happy with the ship, the staff, and the cruise in general. I have even made, what I think will be, a life-long friend, while on board the ship. I could not ask for more. It was the best cruise I have taken in many, many years. Read Less

The ship, the crew, the excursions are all top notch . The dining staff went out of their way to make sure that specific dietary needs were meet. All the local tour guides that they use were very knowledgeable and concerned for your well being. The housekeeping staff was always on top of things. You turned around and your cabin was made up. Health, cleanliness and safety seem to be a priority on the ship also. The staff worked very hard to make everyone's experience the best that it could be. It amazed me how they even learned the names of the guests to greet them and aware of personal preferences. Looking forward to my next cruise with them next year. Read Less

Wonderful experience! The Cruise was through the Netherlands and Belgium. The crew was fantastic. Very accommodating. I have a special dietary need and was fixed special dishes. Food was delicious and wine plentiful. Ports of call were very interesting with great guides. When we were in Bruges the guide gave us tips on where to find real Belgian made lace as well as where to eat for a reasonable price. This took us out of the main tourist area and we found wonderful gifts and a great meal. There was an included excursion every day but the day of disembarkation. we did take one added excursion to a tulip farm and modern windmill operation. It was well worth the money. And rounded out what was included. The included excursion to the Keukenhof ardens waas beautiful. So many tulips. We had the option of staying for a half or a full day at the gardens. All in all this was an outstanding cruise! Read Less

My husband and I and two friends from work always wanted to do a river cruise. When this became available, we jumped at it. And glad we did. This was a wonderful experience. The longboat was gorgeous, the staff was amazing, the accommodations are top notch, the food was fantastic, the excursions were perfect. I would recommend this to anybody and everybody that asked. We had a suite and our friends had a stateroom. The accommodations are sufficient, although the stateroom doesn't give you much moving around space. But you don't need it. If you aren't on an excursion, you are eating, or on the sun deck watching the scenery, or in the lounge having a nice drink and a chat with friends. Computers are available. Books are available. The entire experience was one I will never forget and we are definitely going to do it again. Next time I may look into the ocean cruises. I've done NCL and Royal Caribbean, so Viking is next. This cruise was recommended by family who had traveled Viking before. My brother and his wife, my sister and her husband, and just me decided to take this particular adventure. It was a most superb experience. The boat was beautiful and clean while the crew was knowledgable, helpful and professional. Clearly the crew enjoy their jobs as they were always smiling and willing to spend time one-on-one. It's all in the details -- distributing umbrellas and water as we set off on our adventures. As for the onboard programs/activities, there was a variety to inform and amuse anyone. One of my favorite tours was of the Wheelhouse. I was most impressed by the details, gauges, and availability of the crew. My cabin was so clean and comfortable -- I love the bed and pillows! And the heated bathroom floors were such a pleasant surprise. Of course there's never enough time, but the programs planned for the travelers on shore excursions were varied in selection and reasonable in time spent. The opportunity to choose allows travelers a good preview of the trip. I did stay onboard one morning and had a perfectly fine time. The travel guides and home hosts were enthusiastic, informative, funny and patient. Everything was organized and efficient. Dining was a delight. The choice of venue and food was important -- but the food was delicious wherever I dined. I discovered 2 beautiful countries with such history and personality that I looked forward to whatever my day brought. I had such a wonderful time that I plan to cruise with you again. Read Less

The cabin, food and included excursions are wonderful and the staff and service is excellent. I love that everything is taken care of and I do not have to worry from the minute we get off the plane until we return to the airport. I will always recommend Viking and I have to many of my friends and colleagues. The Tulips and Windmills trip covered everything you would like to see in Holland and Belgium. You have many opportunities to learn about the culture, technology and of course tulips. I enjoyed all the ports and shore excursions. My husband doesn't like to get off the ship much and there is plenty of options on board to sit relax, read or enjoy the lounge. You are provided with a daily briefing which outlines the next days activities which I find very informative. The transportation to and from the shore excursions is also modern, clean and the drivers and guides are friendly. Read Less

Tulips and Windmills tours were informative and entertaining. I think it is a great value. I would definitely go again. We felt very secure on the ship. The service staff were wonderful and we remembered some of the staff from a previous cruise. We met fellow traveling that had the same interest as us and everyone was very pleasant. Getting on and off the ship was easy and all transfers went smoothly from the meet and greet in the airport to the departure. They have it down to a science. This is definitely the way to travel if you want to unpack and not worry about meeting deadlines for bus departures. On this tour there were mostly Americans but we enjoy meeting travels from other countries and did have those experiences on previous Viking River Cruises. Read Less

My husband and I loved our first river cruise. We traveled the Danube at Christmas, stopping at Christmas Markets. The crew was fantastic. It was nice to have a home to come home to each night...with people saying hi every night like we were all one big family. Our room attendant was fantastic. She adapted the normal routine to fit our version of the cabin. Embarkation and disembarkation was flawless. We had issues with our plane coming in to Munich. Delays along the way caused us some concern, but the call(s) we placed to Viking calmed us down. They were there for us at the airport and we made the ship...no problem. We enjoyed each port, walking around, learning different things relating to the areas we were passing through. Our favorite was going to a family home on Christmas Morning. Celebrating Christmas was so well done. Side trips we could sign up for were also great. I would redo the entire trip and love it just as much the next time. The information about what to pack, etc. was very good. I will say that I was as warm as I had to be, but was not left with extra clothing that had been packed and not worn. Dress on ship was across the board. Some people were very well dressed and some less formal. This made it easy to be comfortable in whatever you brought. We did not travel with children, but the children on board seemed to be very happy, busy and easy to converse with being an outside adult to them. We were also impressed with how well Viking dealt with the low water issue. River cruising is much more intimate that ocean cruising. We have done that several times, but we like the smaller crowd on a river cruise. Every room is wonderful. Every person, no matter the room they are in, is seen as a VIP. We will be back traveling with Viking. Read Less

It sounded very relaxing and it was a chance to see part of Europe I'd not seen. Our very attentive crew took care of all details. Superb meals. Reasonable cost. The shore excursions were well planned and I appreciated that the costs were included. I didn't feel that we were being nickel and dimed. My wife has been on ocean cruises where they continually tacky on extra charges. My wife appreciated the wine being included with lunch and dinner. She has a severe gluten intolerance and the staff was very careful with all her meals. Our Maitre D' Gabor checked with her at every meal and made certain she had a gluten free meal even though we had not got our request in early enough according to the rules. The crew seemed to like each other and they all were very cheerful and very helpful at every turn. We met almost ll of the crew. Our tour director mad a point of involving the chef, the skipper and lots of staff people. This was my first cruise of any sort so I was a bit apprehensive. It turned out to be a delightful, rich experience. I've traveled Europe a number of times on a bicycle, now I'm too old for bikes, so I appreciated the full-service river cruise. The Danube is a very special place. Our tour director was very knowledgeable about the area and all our stops. The trip was quite a history lesson. I particularly appreciated the bus trip to Salzburg. We also had the choice of "leisure" shore excursions which helped with my limited walking range. Read Less

I have always wanted to see the area of Germany and Austria during the Christmas season, so we decided a great way to do this was on a cruise down the Danube. The ship was incredibly comfortable, the crew was top notch and as friendly as if you had known them for years. Our cabin was large enough for the two of us to move around and not constantly be in each other's way, the bathroom was small but not so small it was hard to do what you needed to do. The housekeeping staff left nothing to chance, they took care of the room as if it were their own. The food can only be describe as gourmet, every meal was delicious and elegant. The wines they server were perfect with every different dish they served. The activities on the boat were quite fun, but not extensive or elaborate. Games in the lounge were fun and many cruisers would get involved. The shore excursions were wonderful, you learned so much about the places you visited, and the scenery was breathtaking. We will definitely be going again in the future, in my mind the river cruise is much more personal and more intimate than an ocean cruise. Read Less

Our cruise was the Christmas Market Cruise on the Danube from Budapest to Nuremberg in late December 2015. The boat was a Viking Baldur, not the Njord as originally scheduled because the Njord had some sort of mechanical problem. But the Baldur was delightful, made more so by our occupancy of one of the two owners' cabins on the stern. The food was terrific and the service was superb. The itinerary was great, and the land tours were well organized and led, and interesting. The only downside on the whole trip was that Viking did not tell us (if they knew) that the Christmas Markets in Germany close on 12/23 so we missed seeing some of them toward the end of the trip. After the cruise terminated in Nuremberg we took the extension to Prague which was well worth it. Viking did a very good job in maintaining a warm and friendly environment during this trip -- which is a major reason we keep coming back to Viking. This was our fifth Viking river cruise. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas market cruise. We went in the middle of December and added a few days in Budapest. We did not have the opportunity to explore Passau, but the embarkation process went very smoothly. The rooms are efficiently designed and there was plenty of room for clothes etc. The ship staff from the first person you met to laundry personnel were wonderful. The food was excellent and the evening entertainment was fun and engaging. After a day or so, the wait staff learns your preferences and everything is there, just as you like it. We met many great people which made our holiday extra special. As usual, the guides in each port were very knowledgeable and friendly. We spent Christmas Eve in Vienna, and attended a Concert that was a medley of opera and ballet. It was excellent. To get to and from the venue we drove through the city and the lights and decorations were spectacular. Adding the extra days in Budapest was also a great choice. The city is easy to navigate, and the drivers were friendly. We used the bus system which was adequate for the places we visited. There are many great restaurants and cafes, and of course the Christmas markets were beautiful and festive. It was a great way to celebrate the holiday. The piano player in the lounge was superb and played selections that everyone could enjoy. Our cruise director "clause" was well organized in his daily presentations and kept everything on schedule. Viking definitely provides a 5-star experience! This was my first Viking adventure and I will surely go on another. We traveled aboard the Viking Baldur which was very nice and clean, rooms were well appointed and provided everything needed. The only time I spent in my stateroom was to sleep, I don't cruise to sit in my room!!!! The water level was low in Budapest so we could not board our boat there but were bused to Vienna where we boarded. We spent one night in a beautiful 4-star hotel in Budapest and provided free dinner and breakfast the next day. Viking even provided a river boat cruise the first evening down the Danube in Budapest, since we were not on our Viking boat. They made sure that we did not miss any part of the planned adventure even though we were not on our boat the first night. I particularly enjoyed the cruise because there were less than 200 passengers and a small crew that we were able to get to know during our week together. The Captain was in the atrium as we disembarked from the boat the last day, saying goodbye to passengers. He gave me a hug and we took a selfie! Food was delicious, wine and beer was included with lunch and dinner, at no charge. Service was delightful. There was no formal night and dress onboard the ship was casual, most dressed in slacks for the evening meal although I did notice jeans and tshirts on a couple of folks even at night. In the evening at almost every port, someone from the area came aboard and shared aspects of the local culture to include food, drink, dancing, music, discussions etc. Also included in the price of the river cruise was a daily bus and walking tour of the city in which we were docked. The guides of these tours were from the local community and were very knowledgeable. Because the tour involved a lot of walking, they made sure to accommodate those who were unable to walk as fast and provided a second guide for those who toured at a slower pace This was one of my favorite trips ever!!!! This was our first river cruise and we loved it. The people of Viking were the most accommodating of any cruise we've ever taken. Everyone, no exceptions, was there to make the experience the best you've ever had. The only glitch was about half way through the cruise, low water made it necessary for us to switch ships to continue the cruise. We packed our suitcases and left in the morning for a bus trip. That afternoon when we got to our new ship, all of our suitcases were in our cabins ready to unload. VERY WELL EXECUTED by Viking. The daily tours were a challenge for people with limited mobility, but once again, Viking had tours to accommodate these people, us included. The dining room service was exceptional and the food was as good as any cruise line we have been on. The cabin was smaller than we expected and creative unpacking solved the situation. Have to admit this was our first cruise of any kind. We had a fantastic time on the Baldur!! the crew was amazing. Jens, the Hotel manager was always available. The crew was friendly and very obliging. A special shout out to Jackson and Pamela for taking such good care of us in the Dining Room each night! Out Tour Director was Claus...who came in as a last minute replacement. He was so knowledgeable and has the patience of a saint! Low river levels continued along the Danube. we knew beforehand that it was a possibility that we would have to change ships due to this problem. Unfortunately we did...but the change over was seamless. Viking handled everything and we entered into the Viking Magni through crew members shouting hello! Of course no one wanted to have to repack but it could not be helped. Viking had no control over this situation. As a special treat Viking paid for all the guests to attend the Vienna Symphony concert...what a lovely night that was! Each port along the way was beautiful! The guides- for the most part- were very nice and had an amazing amount of knowledge about the cities and towns. Some days we had a guided tour in the morning and then the afternoon free to explore on your own. My husband and I especially enjoyed this aspect. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The cabin, though small, was comfortable. Large bed...delightful! Bathroom was small but efficient. Now the food...unreal! Both ships had Chefs that were outstanding and very willing to make anything special. I do not eat much meat and every night there was a vegetarian meal available..including the appetizer! One evening, Chef George on the Magni, made me a special appetizer! The table of 8 with whom we ate was over the moon with the food! The breakfast buffet was endless...Lunch could be eaten in the Dining Room or up in the Lounge.. The view of Budapest at night was stunning...a definite must see! Our flight back to NY through Muncih was leaving at 6AM.. Viking had us on the bus by 3;30..after giving us breakfast! My husband and I would not hesitate to cruise with Viking again. In fact we look forward to it! It was worth every penny! Read Less

2015 saw our first river cruise of what promises to be many. My wife and I had probably the best vacation that we have ever had. We had previously experienced Ocean cruises but we found this to be the most relaxing and most enjoyable ever. We made some new friends on the 1st day, who we spent most of the 14 days with. Our trip was unfortunately split between 2 longships, the Baldur and the Magni. The reason for this was the low water level on the Danube. We were warned ahead of the trip that this might happen. However this in no way dramatically altered our overall review of this trip. Both Embarkation and Disembarkation were seamless. All staff were very helpful and considerate to our needs. The cabin was extremely well appointed and maintained very well on a daily basis. All of the staff on board were fabulous and very attentive to our needs. Our hotel manager Jens and Tour director Claus were very patient and incredible. The dining room staff and chef were outstanding. In fact the overall review of Viking's organization and attention to detail in caring for everyone on board was first class. All excursions in the ports along the way were beautiful! The tour guides were very nice and very knowledgeable about the cities and towns and their history. The freedom to explore on our own was appreciated and allowed us to investigate other interests. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The onboard demonstrations and talks were very informative and enjoyable. Our first thoughts on arriving at our destination was "lets do it again". Several previous customers have indicated that Viking is a "Class Act" and both my wife and I have to agree. We loved this trip so much that we have booked a Portugal trip next March with 2 of the friends we made on this trip. Congratulations on an excellent organization. Read Less

We eventually had to repack and were bused to Nuremburg to pick up the new ship-the Viking Magni. However, it was a seamless transfer and Viking handled everything so smoothly! Each day brought new delights! the tours were very well orchestrated and we never had an overly large tour group. The guides were very well versed. The cathedrals, castles, monasteries and fortresses were all amazing. The highlight was a Concert in Vienna! Sailing into Budapest at night was spectacular! It is not to be missed! The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious. The Chefs on both ships were so talented. As a non-meat eater I was pleased that there were vegetarian entrees at both lunch and dinner. If I wanted something different it was no problem. We met so many wonderful people on board as well...The dinner is open seating but we managed to sit each night with 3 couple we met the first night. Three days before leaving we received an email stating the Baldur would not make it to Budapest in time for our departure due to low water levels. We were to meet the Viking Magni. Upon our early arrival at the airport, we were met by Viking representatives and transported by van to the Magni. We were warmly welcomed aboard, and were surprised to hear that they knew we had an early flight and that our stateroom was ready! Our luggage was quickly brought to our room. The Magni crew was fantastic - always smiling and eager to help. Rebecca, the Hotel Manager; Rares, the Dining Room Manager; and especially Caitlyn, the Program Director, helped to make this a memorable experience. Special thanks to Radi, the Concierge, who went above and beyond doing double duty after Caitlyn was injured. Others who gave us superb service were Danisa, our room stewardess; Maurice, Cesar, Milo, Faye, and Blagoje in the dining room and Terrace. They seemed to anticipate our needs before we even asked. The excursions were well organized and very informative. The local guides were well versed and able and eager to answer all questions. The food was delicious. There was never a problem if you wanted to try something extra or swap an item. Chef George informed us of the menu each night prior to dinner and gave his recommendations. A highlight was a tour led by Chef George and Radi of the farmer's market in Vienna. Unfortunately, we did have to change ships after Passau. This meant one day taking a 1-1/2 hour bus ride to Regensburg, and the next day a three hour bus ride to Nuremberg. After our day in Nuremberg, we were brought to our new ship - the Baldur. The crew was on deck to greet us with chants of "Welcome Home". We were also greeted with warm towels and drinks. Our luggage was already in our stateroom waiting for us. Viking did its best to make this a seamless transition. As this was our first river cruise, we were not sure what to expect. Viking surpassed all our expectations. Looking forward to another cruise! Each evening, before dinner, all the passengers met in the lounge where the Cruise Director prepared us for the next day's port call and the Executive Chef talked about what he found in the market that day for the night's dinner. Lovely touch. Even when we had to switch ships at Passau (a frequent occurrence due to low water) Viking took us on an extended excursion for the day and then on to the new ship where our luggage was already waiting in the cabin. Viking made the change so smoothly that we had to look twice to make sure that we hadn't returned to the original ship. We enjoyed Viking River Cruises so much that we have now booked our next cruise with Viking Ocean Cruises. Read Less

The first words that come to mind about Viking are, "what a class act!" Our 15-day Grand European cruise on the Baldur was so absolutely wonderful! Although we have been on many ocean cruises, this was our first river cruise and we did not know what to expect. We should have expected the best because that is certainly what we got! We had a rough start what with missing flights and being dropped off at the wrong boat but we were fortunate that our hotel manager Yens spotted us lugging our luggage and from then on we were in wonderful hands. I cannot say enough about the attentive service we experienced. The dining was excellent and we enjoyed tasting the different dishes from the areas we were visiting as well as the local wines. The music was wonderful; we had fun dancing in the evening. The ports and shore excursions were excellent although we had some very hot days during Europe's heat wave. I have only positive things to say about the cruise and professional personnel. Even our disembarkation was spot on. I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise and Viking to anyone and have already done so. Read Less

Had an unbelievable time cruising from Amsterdam to Budapest. The ports were fantastic and the crew couldn't have been more accommodating. We enjoyed all the ports and that the entertainment in most cases were native to the country. The long ship was different from what we normally cruise and exceeded our expectations. Service was outstanding and the crew was very friendly. My husband and I enjoyed Viking so much we are planning our next trip with them. Read Less

I recently travelled from Budapest to Amsterdam with my Mum on the Viking Baldur. What a fabulous trip! Everything about the ship was wonderful, from our cabin (though on the small side), to the lounge and bar, the main dining room, the sundeck and the Aquavit Terrace. The crew were just amazing, with the most attentive service and always with a smile, nothing was ever too much trouble. The shore excursions and tour guides were well organised and always of interest and we were fortunate to have mostly fantastic weather. Free Wi Fi was a bonus and mostly worked very well. The onboard entertainment and information talks were great, with something for everyone from a glass blowing demonstration, apple strudel making demonstration, dancers, singers, a trivia night, Viennese coffee culture, the European Union and more. When there was no specific entertainment we were always entertained by our pianist, Laslow (I think that's how you spell his name). And he played during lunch and cocktail hour every day as well. The meals were just awesome! Full buffet breakfast of 5 star hotel quality, lunch in the dining room or out on the terrace and 4 course dinner in the dining room. Snacks and tea/coffee available all day. Our cruise included the Silver Service drinks package which meant unlimited drinks from the bar of whatever we wanted. I would absolutely recommend Viking based on our experience and would cruise with them again in a heartbeat. Read Less
