My husband chose this cruise as a gift to me. I was pleasantly surprised with the accommodations on the boat. He had booked a stateroom with a separate sitting room. I was able to sleep in, while he could get up and not disturb me by closing the door between rooms. The included tours were very good. The guides were informative and pleasant. We did purchase two additional tours during the cruise. My husband went on the Nuremberg War Trials Tour, which he said was well worth the money. We both went on the Dutch Cheese Making Tour. That tour was great especially when we were able to taste any cheese they had in stock. The prices we paid for cheese we bought was quite a bit cheaper than the "tourist" stores in downtown Amsterdam. Entertainment was very good from the lounge piano player to the entertainers that came in and visited for the night. I especially enjoyed the glass blower that came to the boat. The crew was exemplary (on both ships). Our cruise was supposed to be 2 weeks on the same boat. Due to high water in the rivers, the ships did not have enough clearance to go under certain bridges. So halfway through the cruise, we had to change ships and ended up on the Viking Magni. We changed boats with the same cruise we were on, but we coming from Amsterdam to Budapest. Viking handled the change seamlessly, and made the change as pleasant as possible. We were able to ut our luggage outside our room, and the next time we saw it was when it was in our new room..Since we were changing boats, Viking had our program director Marek and concierge Vanessa make the change with us. This really helped the passengers since we already had a good relationship with the two of them. The new crew was excellent, and were welcoming and friendly making the change over much easier. I was not really interested in eating in the dining room, so I was pleased the boat had the Aquavit Buffet. It gave you a quite pleasant place to enjoy a meal. You could not order what was being served in the restaurant, but you could eat what special they were serving that night or have an option from a small menu served in the buffet. It wasn't until later in the cruise when more people began to come to the buffet for dinner. I would guess at the most we had 15 people eating in the buffet with us. The staff assigned to serve us in the buffet were exemplary in their service. They were very friendly accommodating and provided us with great service! I also enjoyed the self service coffee bar and pastry that was provided. It was really nice to be able to get a cup of hot chocolate on your own. The staff kept the area clean and tidy, and well stocked. My husband and I are talking about taking a Western Mediterranean ocean cruise with Viking, then another river cruise, possibly the Tulip Cruise. Read Less

I traveled with a friend who had been on a Viking River Cruise last year. The service from the friendly crew was excellent . The chef went out of his way to make every meal the best. The program director Marek Snelly went out of his way to keep us informed and entertained along with the concierge. The reception desk very helpful. The captain kept the ship smooth sailing thru the locks and docking with out you feeling anything. The cabin staff kept us very happy. The ports and excursions were very informative and fun to be there. The flooding of the river kept us from cruising along the whole river which i was really disappointed with. We transferred ships because we could not fit under the bridges and the transfer was amazingly smooth i was amazed., Although, I was really disappointed we did miss a lot of the cruise time. An amazing trip just missed seeing the castles and the river cruise where the ship could no go because of the rising rapid waters. Read Less

Dowtown Abbey advertisements attracted us to investigate Viking Cruises. This trip was a celebration for my wife and I for her retirement from the local bank she worked at for 45 years. The staff met and beat all our expectations. In addition to being helpful and friendly they would anticipate things that we would need. Great job. And the scrabbled eggs each morning were over the top great. This anticipation also applied to the company. With the high waters on the Danube the Baldour was unable to complete the trip to Amsterdam. Because Viking had the equipment and people we did a ship swap around Nurmburg which was seamless. We arrived at all our destinations on time and without incident. We had never been on any kind of cruise before. We always knew that we wouldn't want to cruise with 3000+ of our friends. The river cruise was, for us the way to go. The ratio of crew to guest was low enough that we always felt that we were the most important people on board. I am sure all of our cruising companions felt the same. Read Less

Fabulous from the beginning to the end. We were so happy to have extended the river cruise in the beginning at Budapest and again in Amsterdam and Ghent. There is so much to tell and space does not permit. From the Central Market in Pest to the Belgian Waffle at Lizzie's in Bruges (Don't miss this place) it was delightful. Service aboard the vessel was so personal and professional it felt as if we had our own wait staff. Excursions from the boat into the towns and villages were extremely well done. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and able to answer every question asked. Some highlights included the early evening concert in Vienna. The orchestra played Mozart and Strauss music, non-stop, for two hours. The four singers would have been comfortable in any opera house in the world. The there was the opportunity to taste the many local beers in almost every town accompanied with locally made sausages. Our visit to the courthouse in Nuremburg was eye opening even though we already knew about its importance after WWII. Our lecture filed in so much that we didn't even think about - - WOW! I can't forget to mention the late afternoon and evening lectures about the coming day that made us really look forward to what was coming. All that with wonderful food and drink. Relaxing meals and excellent wine (take the drink package - - it's a value). And we met some wonderful people, some of which we are already meeting again now that we are back home. I could go on, but you get the idea. We were spoiled and will have difficulty going on the big ships again. Read Less

I selected the Viking Grand European River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. I was attracted to this cruise because everything was included in the price and the route takes you through most of the big name cities and attractions of Europe. After experiencing the cruise I could not be more pleased. The service that the crew and staff of the Viking Baldur provided was outstanding. The level of service we received on the cruise is totally unheard of in the US. The crew and staff went out of their way to make the voyage the most enjoyable trip of our lives (thus far!). For example, we arranged our own air travel since we wanted to spend time in Warsaw before flying on to Budapest to start the cruise. When we arrived in Budapest, I asked the Viking reception team at the airport if we could pay for a ride the transfer bus to the boat since we had not arranged for the transfer in advance because of our uncertain arrival time. The assistant for Viking said that we could take the Viking transfer bus, but that it would be less expensive for us to just take at taxi at that point. I do not speak Hungarian, and the Viking representative took us to a taxi and provided detailed instructions to the driver on where the boat was parked, which she would not have had to do since we did not use the airport transfer service. This is just one of many examples we experienced over the next 15 days on the cruise of the way the Viking representatives go out of their way to make your voyage the most enjoyable experience possible. Regarding the cruise categorization; I would call it a Luxury Cruise. It was not specifically a seniors cruise, although there were no children on the boat (much to my relief). Most people were north American, although there may have been a few Aussies there also, and virtually everyone spoke English, as did all the crew and staff. The food and wine were gourmet quality and there were choices of several different items at each meal. If you didn't like to eat in the more formal "sit down" fashion at the main dinning room, you could eat more casually on the terrace. There were no formal seating assignments in either dinning area and you could sit wherever you wanted and with whomever you wished. Dress on board was casual; no fancy clothes required. Read Less

When I retired from teaching after 40 years of service, I wanted to celebrate my new life with a European river cruise. We chose the Grand European Tour for 2 reasons. The first reason was that it was highly recommended by friends and family and the second reason was that a close friend had already booked on this particular cruise. As my husband is an amputee, it seemed like a good idea to travel with someone we knew, just in case there were difficulties. However, we needn't have worried about that, as from the moment we arrived in Budapest until the time we departed the cruise in Amsterdam, we received amazing support and guidance from the whole Viking crew. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly because all the crew was involved. The food and wine were delicious and plentiful, prepared and served by attentive and friendly crew members. The focus on food and wine specialties of the regions we were visiting increased our enjoyment and added to our cultural knowledge and understanding of those areas; but there was also a wide variety of alternatives to satisfy everyone's food tastes and requirements. I can't live without fruit and salad and they were available with every meal! The ship's facilities, such as the walking track (which I personally loved - fresh air, exercise and beautiful scenery), the sun lounge and the indoor bar and lounge, provided ample opportunity for travelers to relax alone or to meet up with others in a comfortable central location. The entertainment presentations and daily briefing by the Tour Director in these areas were fun and informative and the advice regarding tours suitable for my husband was always appropriate. We chose a cabin with a veranda because we thought that if my husband was unable to join in some of the excursions, he could still be outside enjoying the passing sights. We loved the small, compact bathroom (my husband went so far as to declare it was the best bathroom he had ever used), because the heated floor dried out any water quickly, the folding shower chair provided by Viking fitted perfectly into the shower recess, and the solid bench tops gave him stability when moving around. The most important experience I would like to share though, is not about the wonderful tours and highly competent tour guides we had, nor the ready access to a wheel chair for any tours requiring a lot of walking, but about the professionalism and care we received when my husband had the misfortune to have problems with his back during the cruise. Simply bending over to tie his shoes one morning, resulted in him twisting his pelvis, which brought on painful muscle spasms. One of the waiters helped me to bring food and fluids to the cabin for my husband as any movement caused him extreme pain. He made it clear he was happy to do anything to help me. The hotel manager and concierge organised a doctor's appointment for that afternoon, and a taxi to take us to the doctor. The doctor recommended and gave a cortisone injection and anti-inflammatory tablets as the best course of action, given we were leaving the town that afternoon and would not be in a big city for the next two days. My husband immediately felt some relief from the injection, and the pain and stiffness eased over the next few days. We could not have anticipated this problem, but the Viking crew treated us with the care and concern as if we were members of their own family. They continued to watch over us and check that we were doing OK. We will be forever grateful for their gentle and considerate support. This cruise was a once-in-a life-time occasion for us, but we would go again in a heart beat if we were able. Read Less

The staff are great. The program director knew her job and did it well, she was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and many of the buildings and was entertaining. We looked forward to her talks every evening before dinner. She was also funny. The concierge was also very knowledgeable and extremely helpful to me. She actually made the trip a lot easier for me (I am handicapped). She was very friendly and also went above the call of duty to make my trip a great success. The dining staff and the bar tender were very good. They remembered my name and what I like to eat or drink and would automatically bring it when I walked into the room. They were very friendly. The food was great and very plentiful. At one port I did not disembark and actually got to watch the crew do their daily jobs. They work very hard and do an excellent job. Some were on the hands & knees cleaning the atrium floor among other things that had me very impressed. The ship was always very clean. The entertainment was interesting and while some of it was educational it was at the same time very funny. The pianist that played during the afternoon and evening was very good, as was his singing voice. I had absolutely NO complaints and would recommend this trip to anyone who loves to travel to see different things and places and anyone who wants to just relax and meet interesting people from around the world. The trip and the cruise line was great. From the time the plane landed in Amsterdam until the plane left Amsterdam to go home, it was a smooth and wonderful trip. Thank you Viking and all the Baldur Staff. It was great. I think everyone should travel Viking at least once in their lifetime. Read Less

We liked having the shore excursions included in the price. There are extra excursions if you want more. This seemed to be an older group. No children. I would definitely do another river cruise.in fact we have booked another Viking cruise to finish out the Danube in May. We will be going from Budapest, Hungry to Bucharest, Romania. This time we have upgraded to a French Balcony. My husband had some health issues on the trip which made us have to go to the hospital in Germany. We were a very disappointed that they sent us on our own in a place where we did not speak the language and the cab drivers didn't speak English. We were nervous about getting back to the ship before it sailed that afternoon. All worked out but we would have felt more at ease if someone could have accompanied us. Read Less

We had a fantastic crew and an outstanding program director that handled a few unexpected situations with extreme professionalism. They definitely made the trip extremely enjoyable. The ship, the service, the food, the ship accommodations, on shore excursions, the evening entertainment and the daytime enrichment activities were all top notch. Having only 190 people on the ship was great because you had the opportunity to meet almost everyone. Many people on the cruise said they had taken ocean cruises on the big ships with 1000's of people and this was so much better. We booked our trip completely thru Viking including air fare and everything was handled extremely well. We would definitely like to do another cruise. Read Less

Viking really knows how to do things right and well!!! I can't wait to do another cruise!!!! The outstanding crew could not have been better - Marek, our program director, was excellent, knowledgeable, approachable, and talented in so many ways. Our chef and his staff did a superb job of offering a wide variety of culinary choices and Vanessa, our concierge, became a valuable source of information and suggestions for questions on the numerous ports we visited. My state room was more than adequate and it was always thoroughly clean and tidy. Our group of 13 enjoyed many opportunities to utilize the Aquavit as well as the lounge. I loved it. I love the river cruise because we are in a different port everyday. Plenty of free time to go out on your own. I am a huge history buff so being in Europe was awesome. I love it because on the river boat they are small and you get to meet all the other passengers. I found that it was every easy going and felt very at home. The crew was the best. The food was the best. I bought the extra drink package. That was a good deal. I could come back on board from site seeing and have a nice cold beer from the region. I live in Milwaukee WI so I had the best time trying the Belgium beers and German beers. Then I would get a late night cocktail before I went to bed. I don't like being on a cruise ship when you spend so many days at sea. You don't have that problem on a river cruise. It is the only way to go. The crew so so great and attentive and I think that is because you have a smaller group of passengers. I was on a cruise ship four years ago with a few thousand people, a couple of pools, bars, restaurants etc and I didn't have nearly as fun as I did on the Wind Mill and Tulips river cruise. I am hoping to come back to Europe in 2018 and do another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

The program director and tour guides were excellent and provided a wealth of information. The tours and sites were very interesting and provided a great balance of organized and free time. The food was delicious! Meal times were celebrations! The size of the ship and hence number of passengers made it a very personal trip and provided the opportunity to meet and visit with many of the guests. I really enjoyed the convenience of not having to pack up and move to another hotel every day or so. The local musicians and speakers provided a sense of connection with the regions that we toured. The opportunity to visit in the home of residents of the city was a highlight of this travel experience. Read Less

My deceased husband's brother & wife invited my daughter & I to go on this trip with them. My husband & I have lived for a while in the Netherlands and was anxious to return. I loved the service of all the ships employees and the cleanliness of everything. The service in dining room, cabin, & entertainment was far above excellent. When embarking on a walking tour in one town, I realized that I was not going to be able to do it (I am handicapped) after about one block, I turned to go back the ship when an employee volunteered to get a wheelchair for me and then push me all through the walking tour. I was unbelievably grateful for that kindness as I really wanted to see some of the places that my husband & I used to visit while living here. The dining room service was outstanding with the employees being extremely friendly, always remembered your name, what you like to drink or eat, and where in the room you preferred to sit and with whom, they were very funny as well as entertaining. The food was also the greatest. In the lounge the bartender always remembered your name, what you like to drink and your cabin number. The evening entertainment was always fun and various talks were extremely interesting and informative. The ports of call, while I have been to all of them many times while living here, were great and the tour guides were extremely informative. It is wonderful to have to only unpack once and yet travel several countries. I do not feel as though I missed much of the country while sailing at night and spending all day on shore. It was a wonderful first river cruise experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would and have recommended this river cruise and company to several people. You are able to get close to the sites and to see whatever there is to see on both sides of the ship while sailing. The long boat does not hold thousands of people, which is wonderful and makes everything much more personal. We traveled on the Baldur and were very happy with the ship, the staff, and the cruise in general. I have even made, what I think will be, a life-long friend, while on board the ship. I could not ask for more. It was the best cruise I have taken in many, many years. Read Less

Food was delicious and wine plentiful. Ports of call were very interesting with great guides. When we were in Bruges the guide gave us tips on where to find real Belgian made lace as well as where to eat for a reasonable price. This took us out of the main tourist area and we found wonderful gifts and a great meal. There was an included excursion every day but the day of disembarkation. we did take one added excursion to a tulip farm and modern windmill operation. It was well worth the money. And rounded out what was included. The included excursion to the Keukenhof ardens waas beautiful. So many tulips. We had the option of staying for a half or a full day at the gardens. We chose the Tulips and Windmills cruise because, um, we wanted to see tulips and windmills. That, and we wanted to go on a river cruise, and Viking looked like the best choice ... and it was! The ship and crew were remarkable. Excursion sites, guides and organization exceeded our expectations. The home hosted visit in Amsterdam was an unexpected pleasure, mostly because I'm very reserved and shy, and I thought the visit may feel awkward. It was the opposite, the couple who invited our group of 6 into their home put me at ease immediately. In addition, we made friends with 6-8 other people right away and enjoyed each others company throughout the cruise. It was as if we were already friends, we just hadn't met each other until the cruise. I'm pretty sure we'll continue keep in touch with some of them in the future.. The crew also exceeded our expectations. Mereck, the Program Director, has the perfect personality for the position. He kept things lively and is quite an entertainer. He put on a very funny, dramatic Van Gough "lecture". Corny as it sounds, it's almost like the guests were his friends, we just happened to be on the Viking Baldur river cruise. He sincerely seemed to want everyone to have a good time. The crew also went above and beyond when my husband got sick partway through the cruise. They responded immediately with minor medical assistance, and several crewmembers checked with him during the next few days while I was out on excursions with a couple of my new found friends. (I'm shameless ... I went and had fun while my poor husband was stayed behind and in bed on the ship.) The food and service, the lounge and service, and the beer and wine included with meals was all good. One tidbit ... we went early in the season to save a few bucks. The tulips were a little scarce, so I wish we would've spent the extra money to go at the height of the season ... or at least a little closer to it. Viking pre-cruise services still have a lot of work to do to improve the quality of their work though. If it weren't for that, I would've given an "Excellent" 5 star rating. The worst of the pre-cruise experiences was when I ordered fruit and candy to be delivered to our room at the start of our cruise. It was to be accompanied by a delivery card with a special sentimental message saying it was from me. First, the ordering process was hideous. There was no mention of confirmation so, a few days after placing my order, I took it upon myself to confirm. Good thing I did too because guest services claimed they didn't receive it. They also said it was to late to place the order, and they didn't take orders by phone anyway. They only took orders by fax. Then they contradicted themselves and told me to fill out the form online. Only this is, the form wasn't set-up to be completed online. It could only be handwritten and faxed! (How antiquated!) They finally agreed to take the order by phone. The next day, I called to confirm and was told they didn't have my order again! After 2-3 hours of calls to confirm and haggling on the phone they finally took the order, and I finally got satisfactory confirmation. Surprisingly, the fruit and candy was in our room when we arrived, BUT THERE WAS NO CARD SAYING WHO IT WAS FROM! No delivery card, no message. My husband assumed it was something Viking did for all guests. It really took the enjoyment out of it when I had to explain that it was from me, and explain the sentiment that was supposed to be on the delivery card. There was also a great deal of conflicting info about what flight changes we could've made without incurring extra fees and costs. We would've made a departure scheduling change had we known there wouldn't be fees or costs. I had several conversations with several representatives about this and other changes we were considering, and got different information each time. Sometimes the representatives said there would be fees and costs, sometimes they said there wouldn't be. The last conversation I had with a representative was that I could've made all of the changes I wanted to without any fees or additional costs. By then, it was too late to make any of the changes. Lastly, it's not a complaint per se, but the lower category staterooms are small, really small. (Having said that, I think it's they are same size and the French balcony rooms, but they only have a window instead of sliding doors.) The window is nice to have, but it's not "chest high" as indicated in some of the promo literature. It was above my eye level, and I'm 5'6". Luckily, we understood this in advance and were okay with it. Overall, I recommend Viking and the Tulips & Windmills cruise. Read Less

The longboat was gorgeous, the staff was amazing, the accommodations are top notch, the food was fantastic, the excursions were perfect. I would recommend this to anybody and everybody that asked. We had a suite and our friends had a stateroom. The accommodations are sufficient, although the stateroom doesn't give you much moving around space. But you don't need it. If you aren't on an excursion, you are eating, or on the sun deck watching the scenery, or in the lounge having a nice drink and a chat with friends. Computers are available. Books are available. The entire experience was one I will never forget and we are definitely going to do it again. Next time I may look into the ocean cruises. I've done NCL and Royal Caribbean, so Viking is next. This cruise was recommended by family who had traveled Viking before. My brother and his wife, my sister and her husband, and just me decided to take this particular adventure. It was a most superb experience. The boat was beautiful and clean while the crew was knowledgable, helpful and professional. Clearly the crew enjoy their jobs as they were always smiling and willing to spend time one-on-one. It's all in the details -- distributing umbrellas and water as we set off on our adventures. As for the onboard programs/activities, there was a variety to inform and amuse anyone. One of my favorite tours was of the Wheelhouse. I was most impressed by the details, gauges, and availability of the crew. My cabin was so clean and comfortable -- I love the bed and pillows! And the heated bathroom floors were such a pleasant surprise. Of course there's never enough time, but the programs planned for the travelers on shore excursions were varied in selection and reasonable in time spent. The opportunity to choose allows travelers a good preview of the trip. I did stay onboard one morning and had a perfectly fine time. The travel guides and home hosts were enthusiastic, informative, funny and patient. Everything was organized and efficient. Dining was a delight. The choice of venue and food was important -- but the food was delicious wherever I dined. I discovered 2 beautiful countries with such history and personality that I looked forward to whatever my day brought. I had such a wonderful time that I plan to cruise with you again. Read Less

You have many opportunities to learn about the culture, technology and of course tulips. I enjoyed all the ports and shore excursions. My husband doesn't like to get off the ship much and there is plenty of options on board to sit relax, read or enjoy the lounge. You are provided with a daily briefing which outlines the next days activities which I find very informative. The service staff were wonderful and we remembered some of the staff from a previous cruise. We met fellow traveling that had the same interest as us and everyone was very pleasant. Getting on and off the ship was easy and all transfers went smoothly from the meet and greet in the airport to the departure. They have it down to a science. This is definitely the way to travel if you want to unpack and not worry about meeting deadlines for bus departures. On this tour there were mostly Americans but we enjoy meeting travels from other countries and did have those experiences on previous Viking River Cruises. Read Less

My husband and I loved our first river cruise. We traveled the Danube at Christmas, stopping at Christmas Markets. The crew was fantastic. It was nice to have a home to come home to each night...with people saying hi every night like we were all one big family. Our room attendant was fantastic. She adapted the normal routine to fit our version of the cabin. Embarkation and disembarkation was flawless. We had issues with our plane coming in to Munich. Delays along the way caused us some concern, but the call(s) we placed to Viking calmed us down. They were there for us at the airport and we made the ship...no problem. We enjoyed each port, walking around, learning different things relating to the areas we were passing through. Our favorite was going to a family home on Christmas Morning. Celebrating Christmas was so well done. Side trips we could sign up for were also great. I would redo the entire trip and love it just as much the next time. The information about what to pack, etc. was very good. I will say that I was as warm as I had to be, but was not left with extra clothing that had been packed and not worn. Dress on ship was across the board. Some people were very well dressed and some less formal. This made it easy to be comfortable in whatever you brought. We did not travel with children, but the children on board seemed to be very happy, busy and easy to converse with being an outside adult to them. We were also impressed with how well Viking dealt with the low water issue. River cruising is much more intimate that ocean cruising. We have done that several times, but we like the smaller crowd on a river cruise. Every room is wonderful. Every person, no matter the room they are in, is seen as a VIP. We will be back traveling with Viking. Read Less

It sounded very relaxing and it was a chance to see part of Europe I'd not seen. Our very attentive crew took care of all details. Superb meals. Reasonable cost. The shore excursions were well planned and I appreciated that the costs were included. I didn't feel that we were being nickel and dimed. My wife has been on ocean cruises where they continually tacky on extra charges. My wife appreciated the wine being included with lunch and dinner. She has a severe gluten intolerance and the staff was very careful with all her meals. Our Maitre D' Gabor checked with her at every meal and made certain she had a gluten free meal even though we had not got our request in early enough according to the rules. The crew seemed to like each other and they all were very cheerful and very helpful at every turn. We met almost ll of the crew. Our tour director mad a point of involving the chef, the skipper and lots of staff people. This was my first cruise of any sort so I was a bit apprehensive. It turned out to be a delightful, rich experience. I've traveled Europe a number of times on a bicycle, now I'm too old for bikes, so I appreciated the full-service river cruise. The Danube is a very special place. Our tour director was very knowledgeable about the area and all our stops. The trip was quite a history lesson. I particularly appreciated the bus trip to Salzburg. We also had the choice of "leisure" shore excursions which helped with my limited walking range. Read Less

I have always wanted to see the area of Germany and Austria during the Christmas season, so we decided a great way to do this was on a cruise down the Danube. The ship was incredibly comfortable, the crew was top notch and as friendly as if you had known them for years. Our cabin was large enough for the two of us to move around and not constantly be in each other's way, the bathroom was small but not so small it was hard to do what you needed to do. The housekeeping staff left nothing to chance, they took care of the room as if it were their own. The food can only be describe as gourmet, every meal was delicious and elegant. The wines they server were perfect with every different dish they served. The activities on the boat were quite fun, but not extensive or elaborate. Games in the lounge were fun and many cruisers would get involved. The shore excursions were wonderful, you learned so much about the places you visited, and the scenery was breathtaking. We will definitely be going again in the future, in my mind the river cruise is much more personal and more intimate than an ocean cruise. Read Less
