We had a great experience and can't wait to go again. The crew of the Viking Atla could not have been nicer and more friendly. Everyone seemed to enjoy their jobs and were gracious to the guests. The ship was kept clean and updated. The excursions were very informative and filled with the history and flavor of each port. While it was more information than we could absorb, it was a great overview of each place we visited. We enjoyed the extra excursions we experienced and loved the variety they gave us. The crew of the ship were most helpful with information about each port, currency exchanges, customs in the locations and countries. We enjoyed the promptness of each port and excursion. Everyone seemed very respectful of each other. We had a very early departure on the last day and they even had a light breakfast prepared for those of us who had to leave so early. We enjoyed the casual, yet very attentive, atmosphere aboard the Viking Atla. We felt we were getting great value for our money in that a sightseeing tour was included each day, plus beer and wine were included with lunch and dinner. Water, coffee, tea and hot chocolate were also available at all hours. The staff & crew were extremely pleasant to deal with and took care of our every need. We would have liked a few more informational talks while on board, especially about local history. The meals showcased local specialties, but could have been a little more varied. We loved the casual atmosphere in the dining room; it made it very easy to interact with the other guests aboard. We took advantage of the optional tours, which included the WWII History Tour in Nuremberg and a very special guided tour through the Vienna Fine Arts Museum. We did a Viking River Cruise (Rhine Getaway) in 2013 and were curious if this cruise would match our previous experience. It did, and we can't decide which was better. We had another outstanding experience and have already booked a Viking Ocean Cruise (Mediterranean Odyssey) for March of 2018. Read Less

We spent three days in Prague before embarking on the ship in Nuremberg sailing down the Danube River with two days at the end in Budapest. Our time spent in Prague was delightful - the hotel was nice and tours were great. At the end of our trip we spent two days in Budapest which we thoroughly enjoyed. The ship's staff were very accommodating and the food was exceptional. We sailed with two other couples who wanted a special wine and when we stopped in port, the concierge picked up wine to their liking. We enjoyed all the tours some of which were included. We were also able to take additional tours we were interested in. All the tour guides were well versed on the Area we were visiting. The cabins were cleaned every day in a prompt and friendly manner. Loved the veranda cabin with the large window and balcony. Could sit in the morning and evening and enjoy the passing scenery. The entertainment was fun - not as elaborate as on a big ship but very entertaining. They could do better on their choices of entertainment though. We had one day in which our ship had to make repairs so all passengers had to either go on tours or disembark and do something in the city. This was an inconvenience for older passengers who were not physically able to move around very well. Overall, I would give Viking a high rating as we enjoyed our first River Cruise and the Danube is beautiful. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the history and the ports of call. We got to visit many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The crew of the Viking Atla was excellent. The food was outstanding. The included shore excursions were great. It was nice to leisurely cruise along the Danube. We loved the scenery in Germany, Austria and Hungary. We were in Budapest for a national holiday and sat on the top deck watching the fireworks. This was an added bonus. The entire staff made us feel welcome. This was our first river cruise and we didn't know what to expect. Although there aren't as many activities there is still plenty to do. The entertainment consisted of a piano player. He was outstanding. With fewer passengers than on an ocean cruise you meet a lot more of them. We met 2 sisters from California at dinner and quite a few people on our land portio of the tour and we hope to stay in contact with them. A river cruise is a much more intimate experience. Read Less

I have filled out reviews two other times on this one cruise I went on. I took my son, daughter, her husband, their two children 13 and 16 at the time - First week of August 2016, on the Danube River Cruise. It was a convenient meeting with a Viking rep in Nuremburg. The staff on board was so polite and helpful. We all loved the walking tours. It was nice to have a few hours in several ports as my "kids" really liked exploring during that time. The cabin was just fine - though it was the lowest price. It was always clean and neatened up for us. I have food allergies and was very thoroughly attended to by the chef, the cooks and the wait staff. So many special dishes were made for me and were delicious and well enjoyed. I would go again on Viking. In fact a few months after that Danube trip I made reservations for a Caribbean cruise and will take my son (53) along again. We travel in January 2018. I'm eager for the further adventure on Viking. Read Less

My husband and I have been on at least 25 Caribbean ocean cruises over the years and were looking for something different. We choose this cruise because it was our first trip to Europe and this particular cruise seemed to offer a varied taste of the countries we were most interested in. We carefully researched Viking Cruises and were satisfied on the information we were able to gather on line as well as the many people we spoke to who had first hand experience with the company. Everyone told us they had a positive experience and that we would have a great time and we did. We were a little apprehensive traveling to places where we had never been before and not knowing the languages but Viking made the experience a wonderful one. Since we were traveling so far, we decided to extend our trip by taking the packages offered at the beginning and end of the cruise. We flew into Budapest and were met by a Viking agent right at the airport and transported to a beautiful hotel right on the water. It was really well appointed and very comfortable. The restaurants were great and it was within walking distance of many points of interest. We stayed for 3 days exploring the city and trying different foods before boarding the Viking ship, which was moored right near the hotel. The ship was very clean and modern with a Scandinavian design. Our room was beautiful and had a balcony that we enjoyed while cruising. The bathroom even had a heated floor. The staff was very friendly and helpful and able to assist us with all questions and excursions that we wished to take and they kept the ship spotless. The food on the ship was very good and they offered a very nice selection of wines and beer. We met very nice people on the ship and made some new friends from different countries that we are still corresponding with. The daily excursions at the different ports were magical and we were so very delighted with the transportation that Viking provided to get us where we needed to be. They really have it down to a science and everything runs very smoothly for the passengers even though you can sometimes tell that the staff have made some adjustments to the schedules. The shore excursions offered are varied and you can do as much or as little as you want. Many of the excursions do not leave much time for you to do anything on your own before returning to the ship and setting sail. We couldn't believe how smooth the ride was on the Danube and we were blessed with wonderful weather. We ended our cruise in Germany and were transported via bus to Prague where we spent the final 3 days of our trip. What a beautiful city! We had a super hotel right in the heart of the city and were able to walk to every attraction that we wanted to see. The first morning Viking provided a walking tour that was absolutely wonderful. The shopping, food and people were great. We were very surprised and delighted to find that most people we dealt with spoke English and that Viking has a courtesy desk right in the lobby of the hotels so that they are available to their guests at all times. I will say that we were a little worried about our return flights home because of an airline strike; but, Viking assured us they would take care of everything and they even had one of their staff travel with us to the Prague airport and make sure all of our travel arrangements to get us home were in place. They really took care of us and I would definitely use their company again after the experience my husband and I had. The Viking cruises may be a little more expensive than some of the other cruises that are offered but they are worth every penny. We look forward to taking another Viking cruise in the future and know that we will have the time of our lives, meeting interesting people from other countries, making new friends, and enjoying peace of mind provided by Viking. The staff made dining fun as well as tasty. I really appreciate the included tours in every port. These introduced us to the city, got us oriented and provided enough information to prepare us to go out and discover on our own afterwards. Tours were efficient and provided access to the important places in each port. The staterooms were well appointed, clean and comfortable. I really enjoyed the French Balcony, this is a great innovation. It provides a large picture window, fresh air and a great view of the world we passed through. So, the sad thing is that I know Viking wants to be the best in the business. But, they did not deliver what I purchased - a river cruise. A long-anticipated and saved-for vacation dream turned into a nightmare of long daily bus rides less than halfway through the trip. So, the great food and great service didn't matter anymore. Since both the problems we encountered seemed avoidable to me*, and Viking's response to a ruined trip was to offer a discount if I spent more money on another trip (that might be just as disastrous), I cannot recommend this for your vacation cruise dream. (*Here's what happened to stop the river travel: First, Viking took a day of our trip to stop and repair some part of the engine that they knew about before the trip began. Then, a light rain in Passau caused the river to rise. Apparently their boats are built too tall to fit under a bridge if the river rises.) Here are things that went well and I would look for in another tour company: Embarkation was a breeze in Budapest, Hungary. Budapest tour was very good and the night tour was beautiful. The French balcony cabin is delightful - highly recommend the extra expense to get the full window. The intimate group of passengers and the open seating worked well to mix up people and ensure familiar faces everywhere you went. The walking tours were fine, but were rushed and shortened due to our bussing situation. The staff was exemplary and asked that we separate their service ratings from our overall unhappiness ratings! The food was fabulous, but we had to eat lunch in restaurants several days because the boat was miles away. Read Less

Wanted to get the most out of our first trip to Europe and were able to add three days in Prague as a pre-cruise destination. Prague was definitely worth the visit. Great hotel, food, people, cultural sites, etc. We also enjoyed our optional excursion to Kutna Hora. Viking handled transfers from the airport to the hotel wonderfully. Similarly the transfer to the Atla was well handled. Because of high waters in the Nuremberg area, we actually boarded in St. Anna. The crew was wonderful in getting our baggage on board as the docking area was a bit rustic. We really enjoyed sailing on the Atla as the crew and staff were extremely attentive to out needs. The boat was immaculate and our room was compact but comfortable, satisfying all our needs. The dining experience was great. We enjoyed our breakfasts, lunches and dinners and the service was just right! The cruise director's and concierge's staff were extremely helpful in organizing the daily tours, filling us in on what we would be seeing. We went on all of the included tours and the guides did a wonderful job of explaining the local sites and culture. Our tours included the daily city tours of Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Gottweig Abbey, Vienna and Budapest. In addition we booked optional tours of the concert at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna and the thermal spas in Budapest. Our concierge was extremely helpful in helping me to rent a bicycle in Passau, and arranging to rebook our flight home from Budapest to NJ when Air France went on strike during the weekend of June 11/12.The on-board entertainment was enjoyable and just right considering how active we were with our daily tours. As I said earlier, this was our first time to Europe and my wife was hesitant to go on this trip based on things in the news and its cost. After we went, she said that she'd never anticipated how wonderful an experience it would be. We feel it was well worth the cost, and we hope to return to Europe soon. We highly recommend Viking and would certainly go on another river cruise with them! Read Less

The ship was beautiful and very!!!!! spotlessly cleaned. The dining and serve in each area of the ship was the best that we had ever experienced. The dining and bar staff so attentive. The shore excursions were logistically professional in every way. We traveled with two other couples and were constantly entertained and well taken care of in each aspect of our journey. It was nice to be with a group that was large but not overwhelming. We were well taken care of. I think I would have liked a little more time in the cities, but realize that we had to be moving each day. The scenery was amazing and the towns very charming and different from home. The weather was fine and even though the river was too high for us to arrive by boat in Regensberg and Nuremburg, we got to see these wonderful cities. The many churches and abbeys that we visited were highlights that really put the icing on the cake for me. I have so many special memories now and I think about my trip every day. Read Less

We never expected the superior service and accommodations that we had. The food each day was very good. The variety of selections for each day at breakkfast was one that you could expect at any 5 star hotel. We informed the Maitre D that my wife had a peanut allergy. For each meal he would let us know what she would be able to eat.The fact that we had a choice of venues for lunch was a plus and dinner each night was a great finishing touch for the day. Chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the fact that we have taken many cruises, but never a 'river' cruise. The staff was both attentive, friendly and efficient. The concierge went beyond his duties when he walked my husband ashore after researching a location to find a cane that he needed! The dining room staff was very friendly and made each meal a good experience. We did not attend the entertainment on board in the evenings as we preferred to retire to our room to read or watch some tv, as we were tired from the day's activities. We would like to do another river cruise with Viking, but cost is a factor for us. When friends asked us which we preferred, river or ocean cruising, we told them there was no comparison, as they are two very different experiences. The ship itself was wonderful, roomy, comfortable, and very quiet and smooth. It was hard to tell when the ship was moving or in port! This was our third cruise with Viking, and met our high expectation in every way. My ratings of the various aspects of the experience reflect my views. The Viking longships are spectacular, and very well appointed and maintained. Our suite was very comfortable, and provided ample room to relax in privacy when we wanted it. The public areas are all very pleasant, and always kept immaculately clean and neat. Viking provides very good food and complimentary wines in its dining room, served by very friendly and attentive servers. The local guides for every shore excursion were consistently well-informed and entertaining. I have learned to be careful in the dining room because the servers never say no, and the result can be more food on the table than I should eat. But it is all so good. Especially all roast meats, soups, and baked goods. The servers don't offer second portions, but if you want more of anything, it will appear very quickly. I occasionally hear from someone who is considering a river cruise that the photos and videos on the Viking website seem like a fairy tale because everything is so beautiful and the people are so friendly. I tell them that what they see in the photos and videos is exactly what we have experienced on all three of our cruises with Viking. Some reviewers have said that the Viking staff members seem to be able to anticipate their needs, and I think this is true due to their excellent training and enthusiasm for their jobs. Read Less

Friends were going so I decided to join them. I had been in Budapest previously (started a Grand Circle Tour from there going north on Danube) and love that city. The ship was very nice. The food was excellent. The cruise director was only fair - I was disappointed that there was no narration while going through the Iron Gate and no commentary on the long day on the Danube. I had been most surprised that there was no river traffic and would have liked some information about the areas we were sailing past. The cabin was nicely set up and most comfortable. As the ship was not full, I thought it would have been nice to close down some tables and thereby having the others filled, and allowing more mixing with other passengers. The entertainment was good, but I would have liked a little more information about the places we were visiting - or something more informative that what we got. The places we stopped had very little to offer - and proof of that was that we had to take a 8 hour trip to get somewhere of interest one day. The other areas were OK, but surely nothing to write home about. Read Less
