After receiving a brochure in the mail, we decided we would love to sail the Danube. We had heard so many wonderful things about Budapest and Prague and decided to do extensions in both cities pre/post cruise. From the moment we arrived in Budapest, Viking had a presence, providing information about the city, restaurants, excursions and the upcoming cruise. We had three wonderful days in Budapest - I cannot wait to visit again! The people, the food, the sights are all amazing in that city! We boarded the ship mid-day on day 3 and were greeted by an ingratiating and fun-loving crew! They made the trip so memorable with their service and their antics. We have several pictures in our vacation book of the crew that served us nonstop! I have never been treated with such grace and compassion. I can only think that Viking does a superb job in selecting and cultivating the best people - they must be very happy with their employer because they serve them well! Our first night on the ship, the captain took us for a night ride up and down the Budapest waterfront. All of the buildings were lit spectacularly and the lights reflecting in the water was breathtaking - a very memorable start to an unforgettable cruise. We stopped in Vienna and enjoyed several excursions in the city. Hard to rate one over the other because they were all wonderful but the Ring excursion was something not to be missed! These are the events I hold most memorable: the little sausage shop on the banks of the Danube in Regensberg - I cannot find anything better anywhere!; the bike ride out of Krems into the local countryside; the Danube narrows and the Abbey; the castle at Nuremberg and the WWII tour; and Prague - what a wonderful city to explore and dine in - the people are so welcoming - don't miss St Charles Bridge and the castle! What I would do differently - I would spend more time exploring the little villages and less time on formal excursions; I would make sure to see all of the stops (we went to Salzburg on a day trip - wonderul trip! - but we missed seeing anything in Passau because of that excursion and I hear it was a gem - so sorry to have missed it; Viking took care of our luggage throughout the trip - all arrangements made to get us to/from the airports and a Viking local made sure that we were able to navigate the airport for the trip home including the VAT desk. The exceeded my expectations for this vacation! We have booked a cruise up the Rhine in 2019 - I cannot wait to travel with Viking again! Read Less

Viking Atla. Budapest to Nueremburg. Embark 4.30.17. Well designed contemporary river cruiser. Very clean and well appointed public spaces. Superior crew service from ships captain to bsu drivers. Professional and courteous without over stepping boundries. Matri 'd and primary waiter were exceptional. Seems to be a "clean" boat re virus control. Very well prepared entrees and buffet. Reasonable selection. Restaurant team aware of and accomodating to dietary limitations. Much of this is a matter of taste and experience. We were well pleased. Shore excursions as expected are thumbnail sketches. Guides seem well vetted by Viking. We chose a private guide for Prague prior to departure. Comparable in expense to Viking group rates. Good decision. Well organized excursions. Viking transfer to Prague was seamless with typical fine service. Viking desk within the hotel provided essential concierge services. Very helpful on day of transfer to airport with VAT process. This at 4:30 AM. I have traveled to the Contenient 40 / 50 times for business, 4/5 times recreation. Have avoided cruises. This was my/our best overall experience. Read Less

The food was not excellent, but certainly very good, although the fish dishes I tried were not the best. However, the atmosphere and the great wait staff plus choices and choices, plus free wine made it very fine. The land tours were very good and we really appreciated the sound system. I have very poor hearing , and I had notrouble understanding the guides -- who were all personable, entertaining and knowledgeable. The only sour note was our flight home. We didn't get our selected seats and since we were unable to access a printer to print our boarding passes, we had norecourse. (Would be helpful if printing was available. We did ask.) We have heartily recommended Viking to many friends and will continue to do so. Read Less

We could not ask for a better tour. . We had a standard cabin with only a half window and it was fine. We didn't spend much time in our room. We had planned a post stay in Prague, the staff from viking helped us everyday plan our dinning and helped to map out things to do. . Our vacation was so easy all we did was booked our vacation with viking and the rest was taken care of for us. We really want to go on another river cruise next year. We haven't figured out which one to do next. I think that no matter which trip you choose you really can't go wrong. I highly recommend viking to everyone for their vacations. Read Less

European Christmas markets, beautiful Danube Austrian and Bavarian locations, sailing up river thru some 26 locks passing Austria and into Bavarian Germany, so enticingly promised by the highly effective and persuasive Viking ads. How did the cruise pan out? Just fine! Nearly completely met the promises, not easy to do… This off season cruise incorporated the usual highly rated Romantic Danube agenda with the first week of Christmas markets in the heart of Danube gemutlichkeit (good feeling). It didn't hurt that we were lucky with both river water level (not too high or low, not always the case in past years), and weather i.e., cold but not rainy, just some delightful white flakes drifting down. Could one ask for more?? We don't think so. Now I’ve gotta say: a big plus to the overall good feeling for us was the Atla’s 90% male crew led by a chef presenting consistently interesting, delicious, well served food. The only better food afloat per us might be Crystal, out of 20+ ocean and river ships we’ve been on. The chef, and Viking’s well planned menus, consistently fed the 186 guests wonderfully varied, fresh, well prepared, interesting selections, mostly with decent wine. Perhaps actually this was the biggest key to success of the cruise. A second was Super Mario, the tour and entertainment guru. The Captain and boat crew also all were efficient, aided by no shortcuts in the design and execution of the boat with its very well equipped cockpit. Our Ukrainian captain timed arrivals and departures well to maximize time in port plus one day doing daylight sailing thru the beautiful Wachau valley of Austria. All not easy to orchestrate given that we were going upstream on the fast flowing Danube with so many locks to negotiate, all while needing to fit in with commercial traffic. Truth be told, if this is a fair example, (and it is our first time aboard Viking) they have this river cruising thing down cold. Personalized attention to detail again and again starts at the top with the CEO and his wife, the sparkly and appealing Karin. Rooms, meals, tours, places to dock, festive seasonal touches, a special arrangement with a wonderful monastery and seasonal cooking demo examples, special music just for the boat in a classic theatre in Vienna, so helpful service desk and an offset hall room plan, and working elevator for the more mobility impaired. Really hard to see how one could ask for more, different or better. While we're also fans of Avalon with their larger rooms, from past cruises, Viking certainly now has won our business and surely will see us again on the rivers...and maybe as ocean cruisers on their new ships as well. Tip: we arranged our own to/from transportation. Viking did so for most others and had a problem with Lufthansa pilots going on strike. Lesson: pay a little extra ($50 I think) for the Viking option to use your own travel agent who can argue for and help to arrange the most favorable routing. Read Less

We wanted to see Eastern Europe. The cruise was the most pleasant way to visit that part of Europe. Given the flexible departure/return airline dates we were able to explore both the Vienna/Salzburg area before the cruise and all of Romania after the cruise. Embarcation and disembarkation from the ship was easy. However, the staff at the Hilton Bucharest, were surly and less than helpful. All the shore excursions were great with the exception of Belgrade. It was less than I had expected, however it was a rainy day. The food onboard was excellent, but at breakfast, unless you got there early the buffet was a bit picked over. Our room was good, but when we arrived the bathroom really smelled like cigarette smoke. Most of the crew were Eastern European and smoked constantly on the upper deck including our tour director. After reporting the issue the staff corrected it. We did not travel with children and because of the season few were onboard. We definitely would choose Viking again, in fact we are booked on a spring cruise on the Elbe with them. Read Less

Our choice was greatly influenced by the recommendation of friends and acquaintances - we heard nothing but rave reviews of Viking River Cruises. My wife and I found the ship and crew to be terrific in every way. The cabin was perfect for your needs and very well maintained by the staff. The crew functioned like a well oiled machine, were gracious, attentive and committed to providing a positive experience for everyone. The food was excellent (presentation, variety and most importantly taste) in every way. Onboard entertainment provided an appropriate mix of interest and pleasure. The shore excursions provided a good overview of the locale visited and time ashore was adequate for individual exploration of areas of interest. Embarkation and debarkation were very well executed including the arrangement for air travel, airport transfer and transportation to ATLA upon our arrival in Budapest. The experience was spectacular in every way. We look forward to our next Viking experience. Read Less

My husband and I recently took the Viking Romantic Danube cruise on the Atla from Nuremburg to Budapest with a group of friends. The small ship was satisfactory, but it was too cold in November to use the third deck for exercise, games, or viewing. Food and staff were adequate. The included morning excursions were enjoyable with excellent local guides. For those who don’t like to shop, there was nothing else to do in the afternoon unless purchasing an optional tour. There were before-dinner lectures but little to do after dinner other than sit in the bar lounge and listen to a singing pianist, except for two game nights and one night of two opera singers with a four-piece string accompaniment, all of which were enjoyable. There were very few TV stations, and the Internet was sporadic. The disastrous part of this cruise was booking it. We started almost a year earlier with Johnny at Viking because there was a “special” price and free airfare from the East coast until January 31. As we worked with him, we learned that Orlando is not on the East coast, but Philadelphia and New York are! We upgraded the nine-hour flight from Orlando to Frankfurt to premium economy for $900 each. We extended two days in Budapest for a deviation fee of $100 each. We were charged $400 each for the two-day hotel stay. We bought the travel insurance for $519 each. The total cost of the trip was $7,800. We decided to book as this was a group vacation. I left messages for Johnny every day for a week, and he never returned my calls. Finally on January 30 I called general reservations and was given another agent to book before the “sale” ended the next day. When I realized we were being charged $800 for two nights in a Budapest hotel, I called the Viking business office and spent a day cancelling it. I instead booked the four-star K and K Opera Hotel online myself for $80 a night. When we later tried to learn the flight dates and times, we were told we had to pay an extra $164 each from Air Plus, Viking’s “exclusive custom air department,” to find out ahead of time and receive “more desirable” flights. These flights were later changed without notifying us, from the agreed-upon 8 AM flight to a 6 AM flight. We learned of the change only after calling the airline to confirm our flight. Even though the cruise itself was adequate, it’s not worth the agony of booking, the unprofessional service, or the ridiculous costs of the add ons. This was not our first European river cruise, but Viking was a very difficult company to deal with. Read Less

Everything was beyond our expectation. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The accommodations were clean and spacious. The food was exceptional. The only thing I didn't like was the same wine was served every night. It would be nice to have a variety, in case you don't care for the one being served. The tours were fantastic. One of the best tours were enjoyed was the walking trip to the Farmer's Market in Vienna with the head chef. It was a nice up close and personal view of a local venue. It also allowed us to get to know the chef a little bit. It was a very enjoyable adventure. And, it only cost the price of the train ride! We highly recommend this to everyone and will definitely do it again. Read Less

We had traveled with Viking once before in 2013. Even though it was a kind of working trip for us with the Singing Men of Texas on the Black Sea, it was wonderful. Once again we found the service of all working for Viking is above and beyond anything we expected. Everyone is so helpful and kind. The whole ship is immaculate! All the waiters, tables, rooms, everything was spotless and perfect. The planned tours were very informative and well organized. All the tour guides were knowledgeable and their English perfect. Our last guide in Vienna to the Palace must have been tired or stressed out, because she fell short in the pleasant category. She seemed a little bored with all of us and in a hurry to be rid of the inconvenience. But considering this, only one, out of all the people we met - commendable. Also had a guide in Regensburg, Germany with too many political views concerning American politics, but we just laughed him off knowing he was not in the "know". Political views should be kept to oneself especially concerning a country not your own. All in all, YES, we hope to be able to tour with Viking again. Wonderful experience and one everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Read Less

Grade A service, Grade A logistics, Grade A tours, Grade A optional land excursions, Grade A food, and Grade A entertainment. The food was superb and for me being on a salt restricted diet, the maitre'd sought me out at breakfast and would give me the lunch menu and dinner menu for the day. On the left side are the daily selections and on the right there are the standbys available every night, e.g., steak, fish, chicken, pasta. I was able to pick my daily meals with no salt....especially made for me. There were others who were diabetic and those needing a gluten free meal. The land tours were great and divided into groups from easy walking to longer more intense walking trips. The guides were local to the town we were visiting and they spoke English very well. They definitely deserved the tips that were offered. I can't think of one thing that I would have changed. The service was impeccable. First night we had a tour of the river lights in Budapest. It was chilly when we went to the upper deck, but they were right there with blankets and a tray of apricot schnapps. Nice touch!! Read Less

Transportation to and from the airports was excellent. The crew was very friendly, and went out of their way to please us. Based on our experience, we are set to take the Rhine river cruise with Viking this spring. The food on our trip was excellent, and there was a very good variety of things to choose from. The different restaurants made it easy to find just what we wanted. Our shore excursions were well planned, and allowed us to see many sights in the various local areas we visited. The on-board entertainment was very good, and catered to many tastes. Cruising on our ship was vey peaceful, and traveling by night left our days open for sightseeing. Read Less

My wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary aboard Viking Atla from Nürnburg to Budapest. It was a wonderful trip from beginning to end. Shipboard service was beyond exceptional. Dining and staff were very attentive to special dietary needs. On the first morning one of us ordered a breakfast item on the menu to be prepared in an unusual manner. No matter where we sat, or who our server was on subsequent mornings, we were asked if we wanted that meal prepared that way again! Cabin staff created special touches for our anniversary. Viking even arranged perfect weather - not a bad day during the whole trip. Included and optional shore excursions were very enlightening and the guides went out of their way to attend to each person in their charge. Viking arranged round trip air to accommodate a pre-cruise trip in Germany before boarding and an extended stay in Budapest. We started on the trip on the Jarl river boat because there was a problem with a river lock that kept our original boat the Alta from making it to our starting point. We were not happy to learn after day two that we would have to change ships part way through our river cruise. NO PROBLEM Viking did everything in there power to make it as easy a switch as they could. The problem was beyond their control. We found the food to be very good, the staff to be very accommodating, the tours to be excellent. The program director was very informative about the different cities we visited and Organization was top notch. I thought this would be somewhat laid back on a river cruise, but we kept very busy pretty much of the time. All the transportation on the ground was in very nice buses, and the tour guides that Viking provided did an excellent job telling us about the history pertaining to the area we were visiting. We stayed over in Prague for three additional days after the river cruise having Vikng make the arrangements. The Palace hotel was fantastic, and our stay in Prague was Wonderful. This was was a very nice trip that I would recommend it. We had read a lot of mixed reviews on this cruise and cruise line. I think a lot of opinions depend on how picky you want to be. My wife and I recently returned from a utopian Viking River Cruise from Budapest, Hungary to Nuremburg, Germany aboard the Viking Alta. Three years ago we had the best experience taking our 4 adult children on a Viking cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. When my wife's sister decided she would like go on a European river cruise to celebrate her 60th birthday, we strongly recommended Viking and invited ourselves to come along! We arrived in Budapest a day early and stayed at the Hilton on the Buda side of the Danube by the Fisherman's Bastion. We attended Sunday Mass at St. Mattias Church and loved exploring both sides of the city -- Buda and Pest. Our first evening meal on board the ship was fantastic, and the service even better. A real highlight was the later evening cruise to see the glorious Parliment building all lit up at night! The Vienna City tour was amazing, and lunch at Sigmund Freud's hangout the Cafe Landtmann was really cool. The optional Mozart and Strauss musical evening arranged just for Viking was simply incredible -- to enjoy the musicians and dancers in such an intimate setting was a memory for a lifetime! Another favorite highlight was the Salzburg city tour which captured many of the Sound of Music sites, and we will never forget getting to tour the Weltenburg Abbey on the Danube Narrows. Our last day in Nuremburg, Germany was a powerful reminder of evils of Hitler's Nazi Germany contrasted with the natural beauty and genuine warmth of the local German people. The complete Viking experience is simply first class in every respect. We stayed on the main floor in an efficient and beautiful room with full length windows which provided such gorgeous views of the Danube river and countryside. Our group of 5 couples were spoiled and pampered with delicious food and a variety of great drinks provided by the most genuine, attentive and gracious staff. Our cruise week did encounter a significant hiccup, as we needed to change ships after our first 4 days on the Viking Jarl. Apparently a ship had damaged one of the locks making it impassable and so the Viking Jarl and Viking Atla literally swapped guests and crew on Thursday of the cruise week. I expected a huge hassle but we were completely impressed with how seamless and easy the whole process ended up being! We left our packed bags outside our door that morning, and that evening returned to our same room on the new ship with our bags delivered and waiting for us. Frankly, I was astonished with the smooth transition! To me, tremendous credit goes to our Program Director, Mario Zamosteanu, who stayed with us all week, and was the key figure in our move from the Viking Jarl to the Viking Atla. Mario is engaging, energetic, always happy, service oriented, and I think maybe he has a twin brother because he was everywhere every day! Mario's infectious smile and calm, can do attitude clearly were contagious with his entire staff, and with all of us as well! What could have been a major headache ended up being a net positive, because we were able to experience the luxurious service of both ship's outstanding crew members! We cannot thank Mario enough for making our cruise experience simply outstanding! Our group of 5 couples are already talking about our next Viking Cruise and may try the Mediterranean next time....I truly hope I see Mario's smiling face when we board the ship! It was a nice clean ship. Plenty of open, comfortable areas to relax while on the ship. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Overall they gave incredible service. Clear information given on activities and times for each day, with added tips for preparing for weather or difficulty on each day's excursions. We were traveling with a wheelchair, which didn't get transferred with one of our flights. The Concierge was wonderful about keeping us updated on the status as he worked with the airline to get it caught up with the ship. I would have preferred more time sailing during the day to enjoy the sites from the river. Having a veranda wasn't much use the multiple times we were stacked with other ships when docked. If I do another river cruise, I would probably not spend the money to have one of those rooms. I wanted to sit out and enjoy the views of the river and shore, not another ship. The meals were a wonderful mix of selections. The included excursions were great to get a taste of each city. Most of the city guides were enjoyable, besides being informative. I would and have recommended a cruise with Viking to others. Read Less

The "Romantic Danube River" cruise went to places we have wanted to visit, so we (husband & wife) chose this trip. The Atla was a wonderful vacation home for our cruise and the ship was well taken care of. 98% of the time, we did not even know we were on a ship! Our room was bigger than expected and very efficient as far as space and storage. Bathroom was compact but also efficient. All meals were delicious, offered choices and service was excellent!! All the staff we encountered were friendly, efficient and very accommodating! The included port city tours were a nice touch, tho some of the tour guides were slightly political and long-winded, not leaving enough free time to wander or shop. We just have a couple of negatives, but NOTHING that would prevent us from taking another Viking excursion: limited choice of included wines and daily cruise director chat was sometimes repetitive and long. We had a problem with someone smoking below or near our room and even after mentioning to front desk staff, smoking did not cease. Since we had a veranda, this prevented our enjoyment of using it. Viking's attention to detail was excellent and we would definitely book another river cruise with them. From initial booking all the way through getting us back to the airport to travel home was done with very friendly, efficient, knowledgable people! Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we booked wth Viking since we have heard good reports about them. The cruise surpassed our expectations and Viking did an excellent job all around. The service and food was excellent, the tour guides outstanding, and the transport to and from the Viking venue was perfect. I was impressed that Viking used all local tour guides at each destination so they really knew the details. The electronic listening system for each tour worked flawlessly so we could hear the guides when we were not close to them. We extended our cruise with a trip over to Prague which was also handled by Viking and was excellent. My wife and I did not know anyone else on-board prior to joining the cruise but made friends as soon as we landed in Budapest for the trip from the airport. Everyone on the cruise, guests and staff, were extremely friendly and fun to be with. I certainly recommend Viking for anyone planning a river cruise. Read Less
