We chose this cruise because of the length and because of all the ports we visited. We were more than pleased with the results. The cruise was extremely relaxing, and the service was outstanding! We especially enjoyed the cruise director and our waiter, Alan. The port visits were well organized and interesting and we enjoyed them all. The extra excursions were something we chose to skip, but we did not feel as though we missed anything. We enjoyed our extra time exploring the various towns. One thing to remember for those going on this cruise for the first time is that there is a lot of down time while you cruise from port to port, so it is good to come prepared with a good book or something to occupy yourself. The cabins are quite small, but very well kept, and we were rarely in the cabin anyway. The food was outstanding and varied and the service in all parts of the ship was excellent. Read Less

We wanted to go from Romania to Amsterdam and choose Viking. Our expectations were exceeded. River cruising is very different from ocean cruising... river ships are much smaller and do not have the big ship entertainment and spaces. That being said, the ship was lovely and the staff were very gracious and went out of the way to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying our time onboard and on excursions. We booked air with Viking and had the opportunity to change flights had we wished; however, the flights first booked were perfect with excellent connections. We did the pre-cruise trip to Transylvania, which we enjoyed. We were met at the airport by a Viking representative in Romania and escorted to our hotel, which was very nice and had an excellent breakfast selection with all fresh food - it was certainly one of the best breakfast selections we have had. The Viking representative in Romania was wonderful and remained with us until we left to board our ship 4/5 days later. We enjoyed all the included port excursions and booked a couple of the optional tours, which were very good. The food on the ship was good with plenty of choices. We will definitely do another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

I was taking a guest on this trip. She has never traveled and my mom had always wanted her to go on this trip. It was a joy for both of us. I had lived in Europe for many years and this was a way to share with her. Our trip was a joy from beginning to end. Never thought I would make it for 30 days but it just was such a joy and enjoyable that the time just went quickly. The ship was always top shape and clean. Rooms were neat and tidy every minute. "Food", understated! Wonderful and always meeting our tastes and needs. To find something special or extra was always a delight. Too put it right, we were spoiled to the bone. I hated to leave the trip as the staff and crew became like a family. I would like to think they were this way with all of their guests but I know, "we were spoiled". Both of us have wondered if that whole crew would be on the next trip as well. Then I would have to adopt most of them. Most of the activities were enjoyable and the culture ones were very informative. I enjoyed the extra knowledge to each of our stops or points of interest. Lots of knowledge from each of the directors. I cannot sell one place above the others but this tour was want we wanted and it fit the list on our list. It was a wonderful way to see the rivers and the many countries it shared. Would I go again......yes of course. Might sit along the side or in the sun this trip but as one gets older, the picture is still beautiful. This was a delightful trip, the minute I made the phone call to the minute I got home, I was more than just pleased. I would love to write a note to each of the people on this trip that made it such a joy. My first time travel friend, cannot wait to go again. Read Less

We wanted a river cruise because my wife was reluctant to go on an ocean cruise. We also wanted to visit Eastern Europe and thought that a Viking River Cruise would be both a good way to try a water travel experience as well as structured land touring. We were right on both counts. The ship was elegant, the service superb and personal, the food outstanding! The land tours were well organized, the tour guides were locals who were knowledgeable, spoke excellent English and were very open about the realities of daily life in their respective countries. As a vegetarian, I was very appreciative of the attention to my dietary needs paid by the maitre d' and the chef. They checked with me daily and the special dishes were truly delicious. It was also great to be treated to local wines for each dinner from the different countries we were visiting. Our Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Bucharest was truly an outstanding experience. We now understand why so many of the other guests we met had been on multiple Viking tours. We are trying to decide on our next one now! Read Less

Our Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Bucharest was fantastic in every way. I had been reluctant to go on any form of cruise previously and had finally agreed to try this one. I would go on another one in a heartbeat! We chose this cruise both because my family background is Hungarian and because we would not be likely to visit the other four countries without some type of guide. We spent two extra days in Budapest before the start of the tour and so we had four days there before getting on our ship. It is a beautiful city, full of places to explore. Almost everyone speaks some amount of English and it was very easy to be a tourist there. Our embarkation experience was seamless as was every part of the trip. Our cabin was comfortable and kept stocked and clean by the incredible housekeeping staff. The food on the ship was delicious and plentiful, with many choices at each meal. The staff all worked together as a team, looking after every detail to make our experience luxurious. One example was how when we returned from a long, hot day of touring, they would be waiting for us at the end of the gangplank with cold towels and beautiful snacks. All of our tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. One of the highlights of the trip was our home visit in Croatia, during which we spent time with a young woman and her family, sampling her studel and homemade cherry brandy, and discussing life in Croatia. We are currently trying to find another Viking River Cruise to book and I'm looking forward to our next Viking experience! Read Less

The ship was really beautiful and very well taken care. The food on board was excellent and changed to the flavors of the area in which we were in. We could not believe the wonderful tours that were included in the package, All the places we stopped at were absolutely wonderful. The scenery from the ship was the most amazing thing we have ever seen. So many beautiful castles and churches you couldn't believe your eyes. For being as old as Europe is, everything is taken such good care to preserve it. It was the most enjoyable experience to see all the locks and their workings and how these long ships past through them. The captain and his crew handle all this delicate traversing of the locks with ease. We will recommend this River Cruise to everyone we know. Hopefully we ourselves will be able to do this again in the future. Read Less

Everything was better than anticipated. If we were to cruise again it would be with Viking. Friendly crew, great food clean cabins, and a well directed tour. What else could you ask for? Everything that was scheduled came off without a hitch. The local guides were very good and informative. We enjoyed the open seating, but we gravitated to our special table because of the waiter. We did take an extension before and after. I felt this was necessary because one day inBudapest was not enough. Viking booked our hotels and it may have been less if we had our travel agent do it. The cost of the insurance was high. I did not understand that as we have been on tours before and this amount exceeded it by far. Those are the two negatives I can document, but that really had nothing to do with the wonderful time we had on the cruise. Read Less

The staff was wonderful, the food delicious and not overwhelming in quantity, and our every need was met. Daily tours, lectures and entertainment were educational and delightful. Enjoyed the small boat atmosphere, which allowed us to become acquainted with a variety of people. We were driven to the airport, where a Viking agent personally checked in our bags, verified our passports and obtained our boarding passes. We felt very pampered. A very relaxed way to tour Europe. This was our first river cruise though we have done many ocean ones. River cruising is a very different experience. We loved it! Ports were wonderful, our tour director, Dan, was amazing. So knowledgeable. The included excursions were all good and included headsets, which is a plus. Food on the ship was excellent. We really enjoyed the smaller ship, as oppposed Tom a cruise ship, and talking with the very accessible staff. One thing that is very different on this type of trip is the entertainment...or lack of. They did have an onboard pianist for the evenings, but he needed to be more of an entertainer instead of just a classical pianist. He was an excellent pianist but you can't dance to that kind of music. They did bring on a few local musicians here and there and they were very good but what they need is a very versatile pianist who sings well and is personable...like the big ships do in their piano bars. Most people on the ship were Americans and would have enjoyed that! There are no fitness facilities, though plenty of walking in the towns if you want to! Works for us as the gym will be there when we return home! All in all it was a fabulous trip and I am looking forward to another river cruise one day. Our traveling companions, however, will not go again due to the evening's lack of entertainment. It was truly wonderful to walk off the ship and be in the middle of these lovely smalll towns.. We wanted to visit the countries that this cruise offered and this seemed like the best way to do it. Lots of our friends told us about their river cruise experiences so we were excited to give a river cruise a try. The hotels that Viking used in both Bucharest and Budapest were fantastic. The staff on the ship were incredible. I could not fault the service. The Aegir was comfortable and well set up. Our cabin was well appointed, but very small, and the cabin steward was great. The shore excursions were good. Quite exhausting in some cases, and too many churches. I understand that there are a lot in that part of the world, but 2 or 3 a day is over the top. Family visits were great. It is unfortunate that 200 people arrive at the same place art the same time (that is only people from the boat), staggering some of the sightseeing would have been helpful. Embarkation and disembarkation went as well as could be expected, given the number of people doing it at the same time. I have to say I was disappointed with the food. There were really no regional foods offered, and for the most part the food was very ordinary. We have done a lot of Ocean Cruises where I have had many memorable meals, but I could not say the same about Viking. Read Less

We recently returned from a Viking cruise on the Danube. The parts of the cruise planned by Viking are well done. One guide in Budapest was awful but the rest were outstanding. The Best of Budapest optional excursion is expensive but truly worth it. The food is good and the wine/beer at meals is included. Unless you drink A LOT you rarely have to buy anything on board. There's little time outside of meals and an hour or so in the evening. Doing laundry on board is VERY expensive. $2.00 for a pair of underwear or socks. Our luggage was lost by the airline and Viking was indifferent in their response to assisting us getting it returned. The concierge (Darko) on our ship (Viking Aegir) was useless in either retrieving our lost luggage or booking tickets for events in Budapest after the cruise. Viking cruises are wonderful IF everything goes as they've planned and you don't want anything more. We saw other ships on the river and I'm not at all sure what we received was heads above the others. The price certainly is. Read Less

This was our second river cruise (both with Viking). The first cruise was 2 years ago, from Amsterdam to Budapest. At the end of that cruise, we wished we had added a couple of days at the end to stay & explore Budapest more. We loved that cruise so much, that we decided to continue the route starting in Budapest & finishing in Bucharest, with 2 days in Budapest prior to the cruise & one extra day in Bucharest at the end. Can not be happier with Viking. They handled everything top notch. On the first cruise, there was a problem with a lock in Brataslava being broken, so we could not continue on past the lock in our current ship. Viking had multiple ships on the river, on both sides of the lock. Since there was another ship heading the opposite direction from us on the other side of the lock, Viking put us up in a beautiful hotel in Vienna for the night (after completing our scheduled day excursion), treated us to a concert in a palace, then transferred our luggage to another ship on the other side of the lock so we could continue with our journey (as well as, complimentary dinner & breakfast in the hotel). We got the same cabin on the new ship as we had on the first ship. The people from our new ship were transferred to our first ship & continued with their journey. Then, Viking gave us a very generous credit towards another cruise, which is what we used for the Budapest to Bucharest cruise. The daily excursions were wonderful, as well as, time to ourselves to explore. On our first cruise, we had a cabin on the first level, which is partially below the water. So, you have a small window just above the water line, which short people like me have to stand on the bed or jump to see out of. This cruise we had a full balcony on the main (2nd) level, which was much better. In talking to people who had a cabin on the 3rd level, they said they wouldn't recommend it because you can hear people walking on the top deck. We will definitely take another Viking river cruise in the future, & maybe one of their ocean cruises too. Read Less

We are not cruise types although we are in every way the target audience for Viking. But a year and a half ago we got a brochure in the mail (we get a lot of travel brochures) and noticed that a booking in 2016 would be a two-fer. We really can't afford the cruise at full price but saving one fare? That was intriguing. After much hemming, hawing and discussion, we settled on a "Romantic Danube" cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. We opted out of pre- and post- stays in Prague and Budapest. We reviewed the fee-based optional excursions and decided against them. And we hoped for good weather. We had a wonderful time. Met extremely nice people. And cruises and tours are just not for us. We don't really play well with others, we dislike adjusting our pace to match someone else's, and we just need to set our own schedule. Upside: rooms are very nice, plenty of hot water, an endless supply of clean towels. The food is good (the yogurt served with breakfast is delicious!) and the service and staff are simply superior. I was ready to pack up Martina and take her home with me, she kept our room so immaculate. A group of us ("Team 2" during game nights) staked out a small table by a window where Richard and Ariel served us lunch and supper and that was just perfect. There was ample help in planning our own itinerary. Several programs were truly interesting, including the introduction to Bavaria and a demonstration on making apple strudel. (Yes, they gave us the recipe.) Downside. There just isn't enough time. No single stop (Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Krems, Vienna, Budapest) wouldn't have benefited from an additional day. All I think about now is what I didn't see. Krems in particular was a fly-by and it is a marvelous town with interesting museums, wonderful architecture, great churches. And we got to see nothing to speak of. I would have skipped Gottweig Abbey and focused on Krems and Tulln, except that there really wasn't enough time because we paused in Krems, got on buses for the Abbey, and the boat met us in Tulln. Even if we had not gone to the Abbey, we wouldn't have had enough time for a serious explore. Loved the cruise through the Wachau Valley, and the sun did get out a few times. The night time cruise through Budapest was the perfect finale. If you will be happy with just a flavor of the area, and enjoy the company of people who are, shall we say, mature for the most part, take a Viking Cruise. You should have a great time. If you are something of a shy person, loath to talk with strangers, or prefer to follow your own path, maybe this is not for you. Read Less

We chose this cruise as an introduction to river cruising, and to get a good sense of the route from Budapest to Amsterdam. Although I had seen quite a bit of Europe growing up, my wife had not had the same opportunity. This was a great chance to get her familiar with the European way of life. The cruise was excellent from start to finish. Good accommodations; wonderful and varied food; super people enjoying the cruise with us; amazing hospitality by all crew members, especially the frontline staff and the stateroom stewards; great venues; who culd ask for anything more? My only regret is that we didn't stay longer in Budapest, Vienna and Cologne - but it gives us something to look forward to visiting some time in the future. We made a point of getting extensions to our cruise in both Budapest and Amsterdam, but we had no idea just how much there was to see in both cities. We will definitely return to each city at some point. Embarkation and disembarkation was very smooth in each of the two major ports of call. We were met from the plane and transferred to the hotel very quickly and efficiently. Our check in at the Hilton hotel in Budapest was efficient, and the Viking reps were there at our beck and call from day one. The Mövenpik hotel in Amsterdam was not as great to stay at as the Budapest Hilton, the biggest criticism being the fact that our "double bed" was two single beds put together (with single sheets, yet! However, the rest of the hotel amenities were very good, and it was very convenient to the downtown (as well as the airport). Our ship, the Aegir, was excellent. Very well appointed, with tremendous crew ad cabin staff. The dining experience was tremendous, with local delicacies as we headed up the Danube and down the Main/Rhine. Lots of choice, and plenty of snacks - the downside is that I had to go on a major diet when we got home! Our cabin (to be honest, we cheaped out, and took the lowest level cabin) was extremely serviceable, if a little small, but it had all the amenities we needed. The enrichment programs that the Program Director brought on board were very good (especially the glass blower and the gentleman who gave us a lesson on German history and social studies!), and the excursions were excellent, with most of them being very easy for our old bodies to navigate. The last comment has to be about the staff/crew. From the Program Director to everybody else on the program and hospitality staff, we were made to feel completely at home, and each of them went out of their way to make sure we were looked after very well. Viking obviously has a tremendous recruitment and training program for its staff, both those on the ship and on dry land (hotels and airports). I couldn't recommend a better company to cruise with. And, yes, I will cruise again. Definitely river cruises are in our future - and Viking will be our first choice. Read Less

This itinerary takes in a good chunk of Central European cities, some large (e.g. Budapest,Vienna) some tiny (e.g Melk, Miltenberg)), but all of historical significance and some quite picturesque. It was our first River Cruise, and it took some adjustment to such a small ship and even smaller cabin, but the crew was very friendly, the other passengers were all interesting people to share meals and thoughts with - and speaking about meals, they were delicious! With such as small ship, the public areas were not very large either, so between ports and if the weather is not good enough to spend the time on the outdoor deck, bring some books to read - don't rely on the room TV, as the signal fades when crossing through locks. We participated in the off-shore excursions, some with very good guides (that deserve the tip at the end), some not so very good (hold your tip in such cases!) The cruise Cultural Director (I think that was his title), deserves a special mention for his dedication and deep knowledge. In general, service was top rated. Read Less

Travel arrangements were excellent. Viking representatives met us at the airport and then, on return, took care of us right up to airport security. The planning of ports and shore excursions demonstrated extensive experience with the itinerary. Local guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The sites visited were interesting and not filled with designated shopping opportunities. There was ample free time included to pursue individual interests and shopping. We found Viking representatives from other ships to be very helpful and accommodating, when we occasionally encountered them on shore. They answered any questions and looked out for all Viking guests. We hitched a ride back to our ship with another group on one occasion. The stateroom was comfortable and well maintained. Service was excellent. Dining was always pleasant – no waiting or crowding. The menu offered a wide range of choices. The meals were generous, without being excessive. The availability of optional informal outdoor dining was a plus. Service was warm, welcoming, and reliably outstanding throughout the ship and for the entire trip. Even a casual mention of some wished for item or experience brought immediate attention and action. The local musicians and artist brought on board were very talented and a great enhancement to the trip. The daily previews and cultural talks from the cruise director were helpful. We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience cruising first hand for the first time. We really enjoyed the whole trip. The ship's crew, including the restaurant and bar staff, were very keen to please (without being overbearing) and really added many positive aspects to the cruising experience. The senior staff on the ship were very accommodating and helpful with advice on shore excursions. We chose the staterooms on the lowest deck, and were pleasantly surprised to not hear much in the way of engine noise. The stateroom was plenty big enough, and well appointed, with a comfortable bed and plenty of storage room. However, we might consider moving up a floor next time (and there WILL be a next time!) just because the view out the window is a little limited. The ship itself was beautiful; very modern, and again well appointed. Lots of interesting books in the library, plenty of room to stretch out on the deck, and, even though it is a relatively small ship, there was plenty of opportunity for privacy or socializing, depending on which you might prefer on any given day. The daily briefings and presentations were a "can't miss" attraction. Not only did Mircea keep us entertained and informed, but the company brought in local craftspeople or academics to show us things like glassblowing or German history, sociology and geography. Every shore excursion was great, entertaining and educational, and although we seemed to cover a lot of ground, we didn't feel rushed at all. I would have preferred a little more time in Vienna, Nuremberg and Cologne, but it gave me some ideas for future trips. Highlights included Budapest, downtown Vienna, Passau, Wertheim, Cologne, Nuremberg and Amsterdam, although I would hasten to add there was no place on the entire trip that we did not enjoy. However, by the time we left Wertheim, I think we were a little tired of Austro-Hungarian Empire stuff - not the history, so much, but just shocked at the level of corruption and inbreeding that occurred in the Hapsburg family. Special mention must be made of a tremendous guide that we had in Wertheim (Rudi), who was able to provide us with a first-hand experience of what it was like to be part of a family deeply connected with the SS, but not to understand until age 14 just how brutal the Nazi regime really was. He really brought the experience of our Wertheim tour to life for us. Service in the bar and restaurants was top notch and the quality of the meals was outstanding. The staff were very flexible if there were any special requests for dietary restrictions. We were happy to hook up with a really wonderful group of very experienced cruisers, who walked us through expectations and helped us a lot. These fine folks will remain lifelong friends, because we had a great deal in common. Would I go again? Absolutely! We will keep our bags packed, so we can leave at short notice! Thanks, Viking! It went to the countries we wanted to visit. We've never done a river cruise or large cruise of any type. We preferred small group tours. We were impressed with the way the "local" staff took a personal and caring interest in all of us. Having some seafood and GF issues, Brian made sure I knew what I could eat and he took personal responsibility to be sure my needs were met. Each day was comfortably filled with cultural experiences with a briefing the night before, often from locals who shared their personal experiences. We learned much from the locals on the ship and on land. We were amazed at how calm the boat docks and takes off. I could never tell, even while looking, when these things happened. Accommodations greatly exceeded our expectations with incredible efficiency. The bathroom with heated mirrors were efficiently designed. We traveled with another couple and we made new friends from all over the world. Fascinating, informative sharing of differences and similarities in our countries. Each evening there was dancing to a pianist and three folk dancing presentations, which were lively and engaging. We chose the pre-cruise option to be in Amsterdam two full days before the cruise. We were in the Movenpick hotel which was delightful. Its location was so convenient to the transportation to the city centre and found it an easy city to get around in. The Viking people were very helpful at the hotel and at the airport, so we were happy with the service there. We sailed on the Aegir, and it was very similar to our Danube ship. They are thoughtful and very organized in all that they plan. My cruise started in Basel, Switzerland. We traveled up the Rheine with several excursions along the way. Each of the excursions were wonderful. I wish I could spend three days in all the places we stopped. My cruise ended in Amsterdam, Netherlands where I was placed in an absolutely beautiful hotel. Amsterdam has much to offer, however, I only had time to take advantage of a few things. All the meals on the boat were excellent. Thank goodness I am not a picky eater, because some of the dishes were quite foreign to the average American eater. I have only experienced Viking River Cruises, but I would highly recommend Viking to any of my friends that were interested in going on a cruise. The staff aboard the ship are very pleasant, and the tour guides for each of the land excursions spoke wonderful English and knew their stuff. The excursions were packed full of information. I wish I could remember 50% of the facts, but I'm gettting old and my brain is not the sponge it use to be. Perhaps, next time I will take a voice activated recorder or at least take written note. I cannot wait to embark on another river cruise. Maye Russia next year. Read Less

First river cruise and wanted to see the tulips in bloom. We learned a lot of WWII history and that was an unexpected bonus. Service on board was wonderful and guided tours exceptional. We took walking tours in both the Netherlands and Belgium and all were informative. We were comfortably taken to the ship from the airport and were taken to a hotel in which we were staying for a post cruise adventure. Pickup and delivery were timely and comfortable. The dining experience, breakfast, lunch and dinner were all amazing and our wine or beer glass was never empty. It was quite educational for us to go through the system of locks to get from one river to another. Enjoyed the Amsterdam canals and the dikes in Kinderdyke. The tulips were fantastic and offered us some great photo shoots. Those who served as tour guides were very good. All of them knew the subject matter and told the stories of each location in an interesting and many time humorous way. We made a photo album of our trip and have shared it with many friends. We have recommended the Tulips and Windmills cruise to anone who would listen. Read Less
