* Scenic river boat cruise from Bucharest to Budapest. * It was nothing short of a nightmare. * We will never set foot on a cruise ship again. * The cost of the cruise was very expensive and I expected there to be checks and balances in place to protect the traveler. ie there was no doctor on the boat to administer to people who got sick. * We were sent 2 Scenic back packs which was a waste of money. I wish we had been asked if we wanted them. * The limo service sent to pick us up and return us from the airport costs 3 times what I could have made the same arrangements for. We did not pay the limo driver directly for this but Scenic would have this built into the cost of the cruise. Again, another waste of money. * Our cabin on the boat was at the back and our bed vibrated while the boat was moving. This made me feel nauseous. * A number of people arrived on the boat sick with a respiratory infection which quickly spread to other passengers. I was one of the people to get sick and spent several days in my cabin sleeping. I was so sick that I couldn't eat or drink at most meals. * When we finally got off the boat in Budapest I had the hotel call me a doctor. He put me on 7 days of antibiotics. Scenic were negligent in not bringing on a doctor to tend to those who were sick. * Every day the cruise director spent an inordinate amount of time patting himself on the back and telling us what a good job they were doing. This was totally un-necessary and a waste of our time. * Also time spent on the buses on the first 2 days of the 'cruise' was excessive. When we asked our tour guide how far we had travelled in the 2 days, he told us it was 500 kms. Never did we think that we had signed up for that amount of motor coach travel. * I'm asking Scenic to step up to the plate and offer us a rebate on what we were charged for this cruise. I feel like I just threw away $11,000 on this cruise and I'm asking for a sizable rebate. I'm NOT interested in any coupons for future travel as I will never set foot on a cruise ship again as I classify them as floating germ incubators. Read Less

We saw this cruise advertised about a year previous. it had an excellent price and was listed as a luxury cruise. We booked and were not disappointed. All decent river cruise lines have good food, service and staff. However, Scenic has brought it up a notch. The food was varied, excellent and the presentation was exquisite. Kudos to the chef and his staff. All staff were very well trained, friendly and accommodating. In addition, the tour director, Kathy, went to great lengths to handle any minor problems that came up. One the best features, which all the guests that we talked to found of great importance, was the fact that the price was all inclusive - all tips, drinks (except for certain premium spirits), tours, transfers, etc. were included. No guessing on what to tip to whom, no envelopes to fill, no fumbling for coins or bills to tip the guides, all-in-all a very pleasant and stress-free experience. When comparing prices with other lines, we took that into consideration. In other words pay a little more at the onset but no extracurricular charges through the trip and no invoice at the end unless you buy something in the on-board shop. The Scenic Enrichment tours were extravagant ( all included in the price )and the normal tours were guided by locals that really knew their business. We would not hesitate to recommend Scenic and will definitely use them in the future. Read Less

Cruise was supposed to be a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, however, low water levels resulted in being bussed 800 km of the 1400 km trip. Scenic was not, of course, responsible for the low water, however, they almost certainly knew well before the Oct. 16/18 start date that they would likely have to bus passengers for more than 1/2 of the trip. They therefore should have cancelled the trip as they knew they would be unable to provide the product promised, or even a reasonable facsimile of it. This was a very expensive bus tour. We were put up at a hotel in Budapest for 2 days before being bussed over 300 km to board our ship. We were scheduled to be on the Crystal but instead boarded the Pearl (sister ship) but for only 2 days then bussed over 300 +km to board the Opal which we were on for 6 (or maybe 7) days then bussed for about 200 km to board the Amber which we were on for 3 days. Breakfast & lunch were, of course, buffet and were good. Dinners were, however, inconsistent. Beef not cooked correctly, entrees not hot. Service was good ie. prompt. Not the over the top friendly we're used to on ocean cruises. Could be because the crew was eastern European & it's not their culture. Very little on board entertainment but none really expected. Nice comfortable lounge. Read Less

Based on our Travel Coordinator's advice we selected the Scenic Luxury Cruises for our first cruise. The entire crew was superb. They were very attentive to our requests. As an example, while on shore I asked our Cruise Director, Cathy, if she could point me to a pharmacy to purchase some throat lozenges. She said she would take care of it and when the group got together a little later, Cathy had purchased them and did not make a big deal out of it. River cruising will always be impacted by the amount of water in the river. The Rhine River was sufficiently low that we had to disembark the Ruby and take a more shallow day cruise through the Rhine River gorges. While the guests were on the day cruiser, the crew disembarked our luggage and drove to the other end of the gorges where the Crystal was waiting when we arrived. Scenic and their crews did an excellent job of keeping the passengers informed and then doing the ship switch professionally. By the way, the unplanned day cruise ship was filled with tourists and locals and ended up being a pleasant experience. The on shore tours and events were excellent. In addition to the crew, we enjoyed meeting fellow passengers and sharing stories. In summary, Scenic was a great experience. Read Less

Our cruise director was fantastic. She did her very best to resolve problems and kept a very positive attitude throughout the entire trip. We did not really appreciate changing ships after four days, without being told at the beginning not to unpack all our clothes. Communication would have been appreciated. Loved the electric bikes. Disappointed one tour was cancelled. Loved the opera and piano concert at the palace.... and we are not really opera fans! The performers was fantastic. The setting was dreamlike! Marco, the piano player on the scenic was wonderful. A real entertainer. We really enjoyed his performances. Food was ok. The steak and lobster dinner was a disaster. Most dinner choices were tasty. Portobellos was very good -- but you had only one night. Hated flying Air France ( 9 hours in premium business class with a small bottle of water given at the beginning and a 3 ounce glass distributed in hour 8. Awful service). Loved flying KLM. Our cabin on the Ruby was well laid out. The cabin on the Crystal not so functional. We believe Scenic did the best they could given low water levels Read Less

I chose Scenic for our Rhine River Cruise based on web research (including this site) and other independent sites. Obviously Scenic is not as well known in the U.S. due to their lack of advertising. Every time we would mention that we were going on a River cruise folks would say, "On Viking?" Ah, the power of PBS advertising! I knew that with water levels low in Europe this summer the potential for an interrupted journey on the Rhine was a possibility--and, yes, that's exactly what happened. However. I give Scenic high marks for handling this in stride and my remembrances of this cruise will be about the wonderful experience, service and excursions rather than the slight trip disruption. Having never taken another river cruise I don't have a basis for comparison but I doubt that any other company could pull this off any better than Scenic. We disembarked Amsterdam on the Scenic Ruby (instead of the Jasper as advertised) and Scenic was very open that up river problems caused them to switch boats. No problem, the Ruby was an excellent vessel that was refurbished not too long ago. Great crew (excellent butlers), great food and entertainment and top notch cruise director. Shortly before we reached Koblenz we were informed that the trip would be interrupted so we had to repack. After our morning excursion to Cochem (outstanding) and lunch (o the Ruby) Scenic put us on a commercial sightseeing boat to go through the Rhine Gorge for three hours (i.e., not bussed but still cruising) and then coaches for the last 40-50 km meeting our new ship (Crystal) at Rudesheim. When we arrived in our new cabin all our luggage (including carry ons) was waiting. The cruise continued as normal, albeit with a different ship which was virtually the same as the Ruby although the Crystal was several years newer. Never crew but same great service, food and entertainment and our Cruise Director (Kathy) stayed with us which really helped the continuity of the cruise. I would recommend Scenic and take the exact same cruise EVEN IF I knew there was going to be a water level disruption. The Scenic people are pros and this was a first class cruise. Scenic made a big deal about how we continued cruising despite the interruption whereas other cruises required passengers to finish much of the tour by coaches. I don't know how true that is, but I will remember this wonderful cruise experience, not the slight trip interruption. Kudos to Scenic. Read Less

After lots of consideration, we booked our first ever river cruise with Scenic, on their Rhine Highlights cruise which departs from Amsterdam and meanders down the Rhine to Basel, Switzerland. We chose Scenic largely because it was advertised as all-inclusive and also to experience the line's newest ship, the Jasper. Thus, we were dismayed to be informed the day before departure that the Jasper was unavailable and we had been switched to the Scenic Ruby (a considerably older build). Transfer to the ship from the airport was handled very smoothly. The Ruby is showing its age a bit, and the layout of the Royal Balcony Suite, especially the bathroom, was such that it seemed a bit cramped. Nonetheless, the room was spotless, and we were greeted with all the special amenities that Scenic offers its guests. The crew and staff were outstanding, especially our cabin butler and housekeeper. They both learned our preferences within the day and insured that everything was as we liked it throughout. Due to low water levels, we were transferred to the Crystal after three days. It totally met our expectations! And service! Our Ruby butler communicated our preferences to his counterpart on the Crystal and everything was exactly how we wanted upon arrival! Dining options were excellent, especially the two prime dining experiences, La Rive and Portobello. Even in those venues, my husand's needs for gluten-free choices were accommodated. The excursions were all well planned with varied options from which to choose each day. The cruise director was great. She pulled off a miracle when, on the day of the ship transfer, our ship was unable to arrive as scheduled to pick everyone up. On the fly, she arranged lunch for 166 people and made alternate transportation plans...all with a smile and good humor! I also appreciated that some options were available for "gentle walkers" - those people who preferred less strenuous activities, even though we did not need those. I thought the cruise was exactly as advertised and it was indeed all-inclusive. I'd certainly rate our as Scenic experience excellent and would definitely choose to cruise with them again. PS: My ratings reflect our experience on the Scenic Crystal, not the Ruby. Read Less

We did a European river boat cruise with Scenic. With river cruises you need to be aware that if river levels are either to high or to low your cruise may become a bus tour. We were very fortunate that we were able to go all the way from Budapest to Amsterdam. The ports we came to were all beautiful and full of history. Our ships cruise director did a wonderful job. Scenic gears there excursions to an older age group 60-75ish. What we were really disappointed in was the service and food. The morning meals when order from kitchen often took a long time and came out cold. The same happened at lunch. The buffet if you came later was often cold as well. At dinner time the meat was often very dry and limited menu to order from. Even though we struggled with the food we did have some excellent service from Antonio and Royanto. We did use room service 4 times. Twice we got what we wanted once the order was wrong and once it never showed up. We were disappointed with the cabin Stewart. She never gave us clean towels or glasses unless we asked for them This should of been done daily. Our bar fridge was not filled up daily as it should of been. We had to complain to front desk a few times in order to get things done properly. Read Less

Friends past experience had me yearning to sail on Scenic having already done one riverboat cruise on Avalon As expected Scenic provided a five star experience. Nothing was too much trouble and everything ran like clockwork. The dining and bar staff were exceptional as was the young lady who cleaned our room We sailed from Budapest to Amsterdam for 15 days. My only complaint and this is a huge one was about the location of our stateroom. Never ever take the last suite on the middle deck. My husband called it the cell from hell. And we became very sleep deprived due to the boat engine being right next to our verandah We did complain however the boat was full so no change of cabin was available Excursion and entertainment was super. The food was tasty and the wine ran freely My husband loved being able to check a bike out and ride when he wanted to. A lovely trip minus the cabin Read Less

Ships looked inviting and upon the advice of our travel agent, liked the flexibility of payment plan and the all inclusive feature, nice when you don't require using your credit card too often. Everything was well co-ordinated and our cruise director on the Ruby and Chrystal did an outstanding job. Our cruise had to be deviated due to low water but the extra time and effort taken by Scenic to ensure that our trip was memorable certainly paid off. We had a wonderful experience. All the stops were lovely and each offered a diverse selection that appealed to anyone. Enjoyed the great selection of food and the flair of the country we were in at the time. Staff were warm and pleasant and always willing to help. Ship was kept very clean and inviting. We certainly would recommend travelling on a river cruise and Scenic would be one of our top choices Read Less

A European River Cruise had been on our Bucket List for sometime. After attending the Information Meeting we were completely sold and booked immediately on the Jewels of Europe Cruise - Amsterdam to Budapest and onto Prague. Our experience with Scenic was everything we had hoped for and much more. The ship(s) (will explain in a minute) were very well appointed, our cabin was spacious and comfortable, the staff were marvellous and very attentive and the food, exceptional! As stated in the information we had received ahead of time, and from what we had read during our research, these river cruises can be affected by the water levels. Such was the case during our cruise when the recent heat wave across Europe left all the main waterways at exceptionally low levels. As a result, we were forced to change our ship twice in order to get around the low waters. Scenic found solutions and even though we had to change ships twice mid journey - through no fault of theirs, they made the transitions seamless and all passengers that we came in contact with were thankful that we were able to remain 'cruising' and not be relegated to Buses for the remainder of our journey. We travelled on the Scenic Opal, transferred to the Ruby and finally to the Scenic Crystal. All ships, staff, accommodations and food were top notch. Our excursions were all wonderful with experienced and interesting Tour Guides. We loved having choices and the Enriched Experiences were terrific. All in all, I cannot think of a single thing I would change.... we loved 19 days with Scenic. I think they went out of their way to make us feel special and well cared for, with no detail overlooked. A special shout out to our Tour Director, Tadej..........he worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly...... thank you for making everything so special!! Read Less

On advise from our travel agent and excellent reviews we decided to travel through Europe on a river purpose built vessel and experience this fantastic trip ourselves , booked a year in advance to secure a cabin on deck 3 ,before the actual cruise we booked through Scenic into the Marriott ( outstanding hotel) and the view on the Danube river to give us enough time to explore the city for a couple of days The day of embarkation , smooth and hassle free, disembarkation in Amsterdam likewise with transfers well organised by our outstanding cruise director Patrik . The Ship is what it is , modern and clean with excellent and very professional and friendly staff who do their best to make this a great experience. We didn't use the room service as we preferred to use the dining facilities in the main mess room, that was our choice , my guess is the cabin (333) is fairly compact but well appointed but not great for in cabin dining :-) The set up of these ships , only one dining room to accomodate all passengers for meals and if the bell rings for ' Chow time' people seem to rush down to secure their seats and if you decide to enter a bit later you feel sort of stranded , Scenic try to sort this out by using their Porto Bello area in the main lounge as well , this helps to a certain extend and this should be done every time , and am sure the hotel staff is aware of this . Dining is okay , I am not a complainer by all means, on a scale of 1-10, cannot give it more than 7.5- 8 , their is choice however , but would love the dining degustation experience that was offered to us at the ' Captains Table ' on every occasion and for all guests, as is the Porto Bello fine dining experience . Entertainment , love our pianist Marco Di Napoli Shore activities , out of this world ! Well organised , loved it 100 % Do I want to make another cruise with Scenic ? Probably as a foody and wine lover perhaps France , make no mistake the German and Austrian wines are excellent too. Read Less

We chose this cruise for a number of reasons: great reviews, great incentives for booking early (price, $500 flights from Canada (we went with the recommended KLM), two complimentary $100 Euro pre-paid Mastercard cash cards, lots of cabins to choose from when we booked, exciting itinerary, truly all-inclusive (did not pay extra for any excursion or drinks and food on the boat, and Scenic has a no tipping policy), 7-nights option (ocean cruised, but never riverboat sailed before and wanted to try it out for a shorter amount of time), and able to book a night in Zurich and a night in Amsterdam with Scenic hotel partners which included all transfers needed (airport to hotel, hotel to boat, boat to hotel, hotel to airport). The booking incentives were great. But we will definitely consider booking another vacation with Scenic because of the actual vacation experience. What did we love about Scenic? Everything. Excursions are outstanding! Scenic does not scrimp on these, and we were very happy with everything we experienced. From a choice of at least two excursions, we selected ahead of time one excursion for each day. We went mostly with the more active and fuller days options. Bus transfers were on time, and the coaches were very comfortable. It is hard to pick a highlight because everything was so amazing. Scenic uses Taylor Made units to allow excursion guides to speak to the group through connected ear pieces and to provide pre-recorded descriptions of city sections you may explore on your own and details about what you see along the banks of the river. The Scenic Crystal riverboat is modern, beautiful and immaculate. We enjoyed spending time in the lounge, in the dining room and on the deck. We booked a Balcony Suite on the second level. The room is well laid out. We had lots of closet and drawer space. There is a mini bar and snack shelf. The bed was comfortable, and we got good sleeps. We thought the bathroom is great (for a boat) – shower with more room than we expected and spray and lighting options was a pleasant surprise. We spent less time on our balcony than we thought we would, but it was lovely to have the light from the larger windows. There is a pianist in the lounge for later in the day listening. A variety of entertainment offerings are scheduled for later in the evening, but we were typically so exhausted from our day that we were in bed by 9:00. We did go out to Schwetzingen Palace by bus after supper when we were docked at Mannheim for a concert by two traditionally trained vocalists and a pianist (gone from about 8:00 – 10:30). It was so worth going … and definitely a bonus excursion from Scenic! The lounge is large and comfortable, and there is a great selection of alcoholic and non-alchoholic drinks. You can also relax up on the upper deck on lounges or at tables (covered and open) and enjoy refreshments. If you want a snack, there is a nice selection of prepared foods displayed at the side of the lounge bar. One of the big factors for us for a great vacation is the quality of the food and wine. Scenic measured up! The food was excellent. I have a food allergy and received a menu earlier in the day highlighting dishes I should avoid. Scenic tries hard to work with dietary issues. Along with a breakfast buffet that has a wide selection of items, there is a hot breakfast menu. Our favourite was the eggs benedict, with my husband usually getting French toast as well. Buffet lunches have some common items offered each day, but there are new dishes prepared as well. One day the staff did a BBQ meal up on the sun deck. It was great – a variety of interesting meats and every bit as interesting as the buffet. And it was lovely to enjoy this lunch in the sunshine. New evening á la carte menus are offered daily. Like lunches, the evening meals frequently feature locally produced meats, produce and wines. Presentation, quality and taste give suppers a gourmet dining flare. Portions are generally smaller; but there are several courses and we always went away feeling satisfied. There is never a limit though to what you can order, and the staff is happy to bring extra. Decent wines are nicely paired with the food. Each guest is offered one pre-scheduled dining experience in the Portobello dining area. We enjoyed this meal very much. All of it was delicious, but we thought the tiered appetizer fare, the tiramisu and the wine were standout components. Some guests were also seated at “The Captain’s Table” within the dining room and had an alternate “upscale” meal. We did not book a suite that qualified us for this one-time event, but it appeared to be enjoyed by those who took part. A huge part of our fabulous vacation was due to Scenic Crystal’s wonderful staff. Everyone was so friendly, accommodating to questions and requests, and wanting to make our experience special. Staff work very hard on an ongoing basis. Thank you to everyone! We know that there are so many people working together and some behind the scenes we never met personally whose contributions gave us an incredible week on the Rhine. Special greetings and thanks though to Aleksandar, Antonio, Zulkipli and Carmen who we always looked forward to seeing at meals – such delightful, unique personalities. We also want to mention our gratitude to: Ivan, our cabin steward, who maintained our suite beautifully; Nikola, the cruise director, whose humour, booming voice, and great organizational skills flavoured the trip in a positive, memorable way; Ivan, the hotel manager, whose friendliness, competence and concern about each guest’s satisfaction made an impression; Captain Plamen, who got us safely along our river route and had a great sense of humour. Tips: A) Bring Euro coins for public bathrooms on excursions (or pick up some early on). Most specific excursion locations (e.g. castle that Scenic paid admission for) had washrooms you could use at no cost, but 50 cents was common when you were exploring a city more independently. B) We were surprised by the number of small shops that did not accept our Mastercard cash card or a credit card (e.g. bakery, coffee shops, small retailers). Consider bringing a few extra Euros in cash, or be prepared to find an ATM. C) Bring a European power converter with you. The boat has a few but not enough for everyone. If you are extending your stay, hotels may or may provide one. Read Less

Food servers were a delight! They were accomodating and friendly. The director, Nicola, was a hoot! He was entertaining, and kept us up to date on all the daily happenings. Enjoyed his jokes at the end of all his presentations. The tours were well-organized, and very informative. The guides were well informed and shared their material with us accurately. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery throughout. I appreciated the daily run down on paper, for the day's activities. The head chef was accommodating, and as much as possible made an effort to make the dish you desired to eat. Really enjoyed the barbeque lunch we had one day! There was a promise of a butler on the cruise, but because we were lower deck people I suppose we didn't get as much attention as the upper decks. Overall I was extremely pleased with the cruise! We chose this cruise because we wanted to do a Rhine cruise, due to advertising and based on recommendations from the travel agency. Embarkation went smoothly and the cabin was comfortable in every respect. However, while we had been informed that we could be moored next to other cruise ships and there would be passengers crossing our ship to get on and off board, we were not told that about 1/3 of the time we were aboard we could not use our balcony, for which we had paid, due to a ship being inches away and a total lack of privacy and views. We had to use our black out curtains on those occasions for privacy. There was no on board entertainment other than a pianist whose drama far exceeded his skill and a guest violinist who could not set up her sound system for musical background. The greatest disappointment is with the dining and especially dinners. Very small portions were served and an attempt to compensate by elaborate attempts at presentation. Beef steak - 4 dice-sized bites. Lamb chops - one minuscule chop and a small slice of tough meat. Beef roast - a playing card sized piece half of which was gristle and fat. Snacks and deserts were primarily of the pretty plastic variety. Minimal selection for between meal snacks. The single dining room was a din of noise at meal times. The complimentary map provided for the cruise could surely be printed to accommodate the direction of the cruise. Shore excursions were OK, neither exceptionally good or bad. Guides on tours were excellent. The night before disembarkation we were told that due to SCHEDULED maintenance of a lock we would not dock in Basel but in the countryside. We do not believe that was unknown until that night. Surely scheduled maintenance of a lock is scheduled and knowable in advance. Busses magically appeared on schedule and all other logistics in place to transfer passengers and luggage to various destinations. We would not cruise again. Read Less

The cabin was small but very well laid out and comfortable. The evening pillow chocolates needed more variety. All of our meals were yummy, and there was always lots of choices. The wines that were chosen for dinner were very good. The onboard pianist had a variety of music available, but he really needed to play quieter, It was difficult to converse. The disco night with the staff was lots of fun. All the shore excursions were informative and varied. I would definitely take another cruise with Scenic! Read Less

The scope of experiences, the beauty for all of our senses, the quality of service... everything was so wonderful that I ran out of superlatives. :) Every port held new experiences. We visited sea level up until the mountains. We heard classical and folk music, tasted local foods, wines, cheeses and other delights. We feasted in an ancient castle. We rode bikes in Vienna, and walked about 7 km a day when we chose to. The cabin was well tended as were our every need. The restaurant service was impeccable though the food was sometimes just average there was lots of variety. The Portobello experience was delicious. Overall We had more food, drinks and treats than were good for us I'm sure. I'd travel with SCENIC again in a heartbeat. The staff were very friendly and attentive ensuring all of our needs were met (sometimes without even asking). The Cruise Director was very well organized and ensured that everyone was aware of all activities, timelines for returning to the ship and worked tirelessly to accommodate the need of passengers. An excellent cruise experience made even better by Adrian, our cruise director. Food was exceptional with chef Nendi personally presenting that evening's special at the pre-dinner port talk. Ended up choosing it almost every night as did most other passengers. Wonderful! Ports and shore excursions were great with some exceptional local guides. Even the worst one a 'very good'. Great variety of stops. Excursion to Bratislava highly recommended. Most items there far cheaper than in Hungary and the other countries visited. Flew in to Budapest a few days early and took in the Hospital in the Rock on our own knowing we had already chosen the Budapest city tour with Scenic. The hospital is a must see! The ship and cabin were excellent. Scenic's horizontal balcony window is ideal. At some ports, docking to another ship is common where one has to pass through a competitor's ship to reach shore. What an eye-opener! Viking, AMA, Avalon, Tauck, etc., none could compare. Perhaps premium priced but everything was included. Would choose Scenic again without hesitation. Read Less

My wife and I were looking to take a river cruise and this cruise was recommended by our travel agent - Minnie Verburg at Marlin Travel Agency, Belleville. We flew from Toronto to Prague and spent 3 days there before traveling by bus to Nuremberg. Our tour guide Marten gave us a very informative overview of the city. When we arrived at the ship embarkation was very smooth. The cruise director was very informative and her nightly chats were well received. The cabin was very comfortable and the balcony was a bonus. One of the high lights was viewing the country side as we sailed towards Budapest. Meals were delightful. The buffets had ample choice and variety be it breakfast or lunch. Dinners a la cart provided plenty of choice and the quality was excellent. The staff were were very friendly and most courteous. The ports and shore excursions proved very educational. The guides were very knowledgeable. If I have a complaint there should have been two days in Vienna and two day in Budapest. There was too much to take in in one day. This cruise was a combined birthday/wedding anniversary gift that my wife and I gave each other. Yes I would go again. Read Less

Scenic was recommended by a friend. We are so glad we listened. Every last thing was included Room was comfortable and we were in the diamond deck with a balcony. The lounge area was lovely with Danny at the piano and we enjoyed that. After dinner in the lounge, there was dancing and on a couple nights they had "disco" nights which were a lot of fun. The restaurant was great with wonderful choices for breakfast and lunch. The dinner menu also, great No complaints. All events and excursions off the boat were lovely and saw so many places we never would if thought to go. The staff were amazing and helpful and the butler bringing coffee and juice in the morning to our room was wonderful. The 2 weeks just flew by. Overall we'd rate it all 5 star and would definitely travel with scenic again. Well worth the money Read Less

The staff were friendly; the ship was always clean, amenities were well done. We enjoyed the ports we stopped at; the excursions were well done. There was a slower group (for those who don't walk as fast) and this suited us very well. The connections with the busses were always great. They as well were clean and efficient. We would definitely recommend this cruise itinerary to anyone that wants a little luxury in their lives. We had laundry service as well (two pieces pressed daily) and this was a bonus for sure. Garments crease when they have been in a suitcase for a while. The weather was good, the onboard food was excellent, and there were two Octoberfest celebrations that were well done. We loved the Cruise Director "Alex". He always went the extra mile to make sure that everything worked out. He looked after people with special diets I noticed. The ship's staff also did a good job with that too. We are not bothered by any food allergies, etc. but there were two ladies that I connected with that had problems. They said the ship really had addressed there concerns. Highly recommend this cruise, itinerary and ship!!! Read Less

This cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest was a very good way to visit that part of Europe. The attraction of the Scenic package is that it includes excursions (usually a choice of two or sometimes three) at each of the stops en route. While sometimes all this activity felt a bit hectic, the overall experience of the excursions was very positive - the excursions included out of the ordinary events such as a medieval dinner at Marksburg castle and a concert at the Palais Liechtenstein. The negative side of the Scenic experience was the frequent claim that we were experiencing five star luxury. The cruise was enjoyable, but neither the accommodation nor the dinners were "five star luxury" (e.g. as compared to Seabourn). The design of our room was fine (except for the closet doors), and the balcony was nice, but the bedroom and bathroom were fairly basic (with some maintenance required). Breakfasts and lunches had a large assortment of good food. Dinners were fine, and well-presented, but generally there was nothing particularly special about the food and the service was sometimes a bit haphazard. Read Less

First cruise on a river & we were told that the Rhine was the most scenic. Other than my comments under cabin, the only other issue I had was the entertainment on the night we had an accordion player & guitar player - the quality of which were poor & laughable. The violin player was excellent & fitted well with the cruising. It would have been nice if the entertainment generally encouraged more dancing with choice of music. People love to sit & listen but they also like to dance! Despite the constructive criticism, the cruise was terrific, the staff were excellent & attentive & friendly! We enjoyed the special dining situations immensely. RSVP's should be required for Portobello dining to ensure all people receive their invitatiins. Our weather wasn't the greatest but the tours were well done with good choices available. I would have liked to have more opportunities to explore on my own from the boat but didn't want to pass on the organized activity. More time in port would have allowed that! In this review - I had to change to boat to crystal to report the trip - despite the fact that we sailed on the Jade. Read Less

A Scenic representative met us at the airport and led us to the van which then transported us from the airport to the ship. Upon arrival at the Scenic Crystal we were given a warm greeting from the crew. Check-in was very quick and simple. We were led to our room and shown how everything worked. Our luggage was delivered to our room very promptly. We attended a mandatory "Ship & Safety Briefing" before dinner the first evening. At the briefing we met the ships Captain - Plamen, the Hotel Manager - Ivan and the Cruise Director - Szilvia. These three individuals are extremely competent and professional. Szilvia gave a briefing every day, before dinner, called "Port Talk". These briefings updated the passengers on the next days activities and logistics. I will say that all 50 crew members on our ship were excellent. They went out of their way to make sure that all your needs were met. Butler - Each room has a Butler. The Butler is there to provide service to you. Depending on your room level, they will perform tasks such as coffee and tea service and breakfast service in your room. Ironing two items of clothing/person/day. These Butlers have many other jobs to perform and aren't at your beck and call. If you need something they provide you with their telephone number, so give them a call and they will do their best to accommodate your request. Breakfast - Early Bird Breakfast was served in from 6:30 to 7:30am in the River Café. Late Riser Breakfast was from 9 to 10 am in the River Café. The main breakfast was served from 7:30 to 9am in the Crystal Dining Room. Breakfast was served buffet style with a large selection of various meats, eggs (including made to order omelets), potatoes, fruits, various fruit juices and breads. Lunch - Light Lunch was served from 1 to 2 pm in Portobellos. The menu varied a little from day to day but generally there was a salad bar, sandwiches, pasta and potatoes. You could order a hamburger & fries if you wished. The main lunch was generally served from 1 to 2:30pm in the Crystal Dining Room. Times varied based on the activity schedule for the day. It was buffet style with a large selection to choose from. Dinner - Served in the Crystal Dining and was ala- carte. There was meat, fish and vegetarian choices every night. You also had a limited number of other special order choices you could place with your server. Portobellos - Each passenger is given the opportunity to dine at Portobellos once during while on board. It is a more intimate setting (Seats 30) with a special menu. Reservations are made with the reception Desk. Table La Rive - Passengers staying on the Diamond Deck and in other "Premium" rooms are invited to dine at Table La Rive once while on board. Table La Rive is located in the Crystal Dining Room. Guests are served a special menu with several courses of food and wine. All the food was very good. Presentation was excellent. Service was excellent. Unlike other reviews that I read, our food was hot when it was supposed to be and cold when it was supposed to be. There were enough choices to please (almost) anyone. The wine, liquor, and beer was all top shelf. Top Deck of Ship - This area runs almost the full length of the ship. There are various places to sit and view the sights unobstructed. There is a walking/jogging track and a giant chess board. Sanitation - The ship was kept spotlessly clean. The floors, windows and railings were cleaned constantly. Our room was cleaned and re-stocked two to three times per day. Entertainment - The on-board entertainment was good, not great. There were some very good performers brought on board in the various ports. The on ship entertainer was mediocre but provided some value. Fitness & Recreation - The ship has a small gym. Emphasis on small. It has a treadmill, elliptical cross trainer, stationary bicycle and a rowing machine. No weights. Ship has electric assist bicycles available to ride in port cities. Scenic did organize a bike ride once during our trip. We rode from the city of Durnstein to the city of Melk, about 22 miles. It was a beautiful and enjoyable ride. Shore Excursions - Excellent shore excursions with a wide variety of choices. Well planned and interesting. The Cruise Director explains each excursion so that you can make an educated decision one which option to chose. Read Less
