This was our first river cruise having done many sea cruises with Seabourn and Silversea. We were initially pleased with the overall experience, although the suites were a little tired. All of the staff were extremely polite and helpful and we listed many individuals in our on board review. The food, service and excursions were excellent. The on board entertainment was average. Apart from one guest entertainer, we had the same pianist/vocalist for the entire cruise. The problems started for us after a couple of days when our toilet stopped flushing. On reporting the problem, we were informed that there was a major issue as a plastic bottle had been flushed into the system. There was an unsuccessful attempt by staff to solve the problem and this resulted in 170 guests and all staff having to use 2 toilets on another ship alongside. The use of this other ship continued for 2 days but the problem remained for the whole of our cruise. We were assured by the staff that there would be some compensation for the inconvenience caused. In fact some guests chose to leave the ship part way through their holiday. Having submitted a complaint to Scenic we were initially offered 20% discount on a future cruise. This is hardly compensation for what we had suffered and in fact has no value unless we book again with Scenic. We contacted Scenic to express our disappointment and it took a further 3 weeks to be told that we would not be getting any further compensation other than the discount. We feel that this is extremely poor service when we were led to believe there would be some financial compensation against the considerable expense we laid out for this holiday. Read Less

We paid for the Scenic Diamond but got the Scenic Cubic Zirconia! First our pickup at the airport was over an hour late. All other cruise lines had picked up their people and left. Next, there was a strike on our scheduled trip from Paris to Bordeaux. Scenic told us late the evening before to be prepared for a 10-hour bus ride and bring food or bring Euros to buy water and lunch. We were originally on a first class train. Going on a 10-hour bus ride on a Luxury cruise that we paid $16K+ for was not an option for us. We booked a flight at our own expense at an elevated last minute price. If they had informed us earlier in the day, our small group could have hired a private driver or rented a car (5 hrs) at a far lesser expense. It was our 35th anniversary so we splurged on a suite. What a mistake. We were in a port 95% of the time looking at the gangplank (see pic). Prior to booking, I asked the Scenic agent for a recommendation and selected the suite she recommended. This cabin should not be a suite and should be priced comparable with the (lack of) view. Also, the suites are not much bigger but come with a much bigger price tag! We could have easily stayed at a 5 star+ hotels and ate at fabulous restaurants with lots of cash leftover for what we paid to wake up looking at a gangplank and people walking right next to our balcony. All but one of the wine tastings were terrible. 50 people at a time tasting a few drops of wine and then going to the wine store followed by the hour+ bus ride back to the ship. The Remy Martin (cognac) tour was the best one. We had enough of Scenic’s tasting excursions and arranged for our own at a small shop in Blaye - the 8 of us had a great time. Recommend to do that if you should decide to go. The merchant supplied 4 good wines for tasting, he didn’t charge us though not sure that is the norm since we did buy and ship some wine home. The good part was the food, staff and service. It was rare to have to wait for service. The breakfast buffet was good but got boring with the majority of the dishes staying the same over 12 days. Nonetheless good quality. Dinners were maybe one notch up from the big ships. The specialty dinner was very good. (one was included with suites and top deck cabins). I called customer service to complain upon our return and the rep dismissed everything I said. It was an extremely disappointing conversation, not what I expected from a “luxury” cruise line. If you’re still thinking of Scenic, I’d recommend getting a regular cabin on the highest deck, forget any cabin upgrades. Also, for the Bordeaux cruise, stay on the portside so you can at least see the river since docked for 90% of the time. Read Less
