This trip included some cities I hadn't been to before. Accommodations, food, service and chosen tours/activities were excellent. The Viking staff could not have been more responsive. Our 3-day extension at the end of the river cruise in Budapest was outstanding. There, too, Viking was superb in helping make our "after-cruise" days an excellent experience. The planned shore excursions were very well-selected, and the optional excursions and tours were equally excellent. Because of a previous heavy rain storm, Viking was forced to make some quick adaptions to our planning route and activities, and these adaptations were so skillfully done we hardly noticed the few necessary changes. We were especially impressed with the personal approach and care given us by the Viking staff. The servers in the restaurants, as well as the tour director, tour leaders etc. quickly knew us by name and learned very quickly about any preferences we had. They were simply the best we have ever encountered on any trip. Based on this first experience with Viking, we have already booked our 2018 river cruise in Russia. We would recommend Viking, without any reservation at all. Read Less

This was my wife and my first river cruise, as it was for my in-laws and their two friends who traveled along with us. It will definitely not be our last cruise with Viking! My wife and I are both in our early to mid 50's and have reasonably extensive travel experience. Our traveling companions were in their mid to late 70's. There is simply not a bad thing to say about the entire trip. It started with the agent at Viking who was friendly and very attentive at helping with all of our booking. We had lots of questions since this was our first cruise. It could not have been any more of a smooth and easy process. We opted for a two-day pre-cruise extension in Budapest. We met our connection easily at the airport who took us to the hotel. The hotel itself (Corinthia) was spectacular as was the service by all of the staff. There was a desk manned by Viking in the lobby during our stay to answer any questions. Boarding the boat was hassle free. The room was clean and more than adequate for our needs. For the next 8 days we enjoyed non-stop continuous superb service by every single member of the crew. The food was excellent and we can’t say enough good things about our service staff. They felt like family by the end of the cruise. The cruise director was humorous, friendly, and always helpful. All of the side excursion were incredibly well planned, enjoyable, and with highly professional and interesting guides. As we had read in advance, navigating this part of the Danube river is highly dependent on the recent rain activity. Water levels either too high or too low can cause problems. This was the case for one small portion of our trip which required a slight deviation from our itinerary. That said, as we had also read before our trip, Viking and the crew did a spectacular job of making accommodations. Our party, and I sense almost universally the remainder of the passengers, were more than satisfied with the arrangements. We are already planning our next Viking cruise and would leave tomorrow if we could. Read Less

The meals were beautifully presented and and tasty. The service was excellent. The staff made us feel special. We enjoyed the ports and the included shore excursions. If was truly a relaxing vacation from start to finish. Our room was cleaned spotlessly each day. The German night was a true highlight of the trip. We enjoyed getting to try the multiple types of German food and wines that were offered. The last night's dinner was an amazing meal from start to finish. I am a true foodie...the cruise met all my expectations. We enjoyed having the outdoor buffet option for lunch as well. Read Less

Our friends asked if we wanted to go with them on this particular river cruise and, as we had never tried a river cruise and wanted to, it afforded the perfect excuse to go. It was more relaxing than the large cruise ships, the food was very good, and the staff was superb. The only downfall on our cruise was missing a whole port due to river depth issues. Our friends missed a tour they were looking forward to experiencing. (They were reimbursed, of course, but the rest of us missed our included city tour of the town we were not able to see and have not yet had any reimbursement.). As with most tours, there does not seem to be enough time to see what there is to see (ie, a WWII tour where we were told we only had enough time to see one floor of the six floors of the exhibit.) Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze (though be sure to buy airfare or transfers directly through Viking because they make it absolutely painless). The ship was so comfortable, and the staff were top-notch and professional. It was so relaxing. The food was PHENOMENAL. The ports of call were wonderful, and it was very nice to not have to pay for each and every excursion (as compared to ocean cruises which my hubby and I frequently go on). The only downside is that my hubby and I are very active but the boat doesn't have a gym. It only has a walking track so I would walk 2-5 miles per day, but it's hardly the normal exercise I get at the gym. The cabin was very comfortable; it was very nice to be able to leave the balcony door open at night and get a cool river breeze. Lastly, the other passengers were delightful. We had a wonderful time and would definitely go again. Read Less

The Viking Odin offered the exact cruise itinerary that I wanted. The cruise was a good value. I like the classic lines of the ship. The crew were attentive and truly wanted to please the guests. All our fellow cruises were delightful. We arrived a day early into Budapest and stayed at the Boscolo. It was a great hotel. Boarding the river cruise ship was flawless. We felt truly welcomed aboard. Our cabin was designed exceptionally well. There was a place for everything. We enjoyed watching reruns of Downton Abbey onboard. The two dining venues were fabulous. We enjoyed the multi course dinner at night with the wines. For lunch, we tended to like the lighter buffet up on the second deck and enjoyed the sun. We loved the ports of calls and the shore excursions offered. I would go again on a Viking River Cruise. It was so relaxing and enjoyable to see the beauty of the river go by. I can't say enough positive things about my trip! Read Less

Some friends asked if we would join them on this cruise and we had been wanting to try one. The cruise was a lot more relaxed than being on a large ship. It was nice being just steps away from the lounge and dining areas rather than traversing a lengthy ship. The service and staff was exceptional. The food was good, the free wine and beer with dinner was great, and the entertainment was adequate (usually a singer/pianist in the lounge). The cabin and bath were spacious enough. The cruise director (?) was hilarious and very informative regarding the history of the ports we were to visit. The only disappointment was missing an entire port due to a weather-related issue (not being able to get under a bridge, thus losing a day's itinerary. Although I did learn to make towel animals that day!) It would have been nice to receive some kind of recompense. Read Less

From pick up at the airport in Prague until drop-off at the airport in Paris, we were treated like royalty. The crew is excellent, from room stewards to captain. I was worried there would be too much down time while on the boat. Just the opposite. There was always an activity to join if you wished. Ship accommodations were five star. Bus drivers were friendly, and took passenger safety very seriously. Tours were well managed and guides were very knowledgeable. If I were to make changes to our itenarary, it would be to NOT do as many extra excursions. We would have enjoyed just wandering the locations on our own after the tours if we had planned more free time for ourselves. Our cruise director, Claudia, was a gem. So thoughtful yet fun. Can't believe the skill of the Captain taking us under bridges at a very high water mark. Michael, the Hotel Manager, made every sailing moment a fun experience. This will not be our last cruise with Viking. The embarkations & disembarkations were seamless. Dining on the ship was fantastic. So many choices for food for all three meals and all of it delicious. Each stop had an included tour that was always informative, the guides were always well versed. Got lots of walking and sightseeing in every day. We did an extension on both ends of our cruise and spent 4 days in Prague which was absolutely amazing. The hotel arrangements there were incredible. Also spent three full days in Paris. The Paris hotel was in a great location but the hotel bar was ridiculously priced. Thankfully there were lots of cheaper places around for food and drinks that were within a couple of blocks walking distance. Paris was a bit packed when we were there due to the UEFA cup but got to see nearly everything we wanted to. Food in Paris was divine. If you're ever in Cochem, Germany you must get the flammkuchen. Onboard activities were pretty fun. The onboard glass blowing demonstration was very entertaining and had to be one of my favorite nights on the ship. The crew throughout could not have been any better. The program director was amazing, restaurant and bar staff were excellent, accommodating and always friendly. Our cabins were excellent, staff in charge of cleaning did special presentations of your room for anniversaries and birthdays. We will definitely be sailing with Viking again. Read Less

My man wanted to go on a river cruise in that part of the world. It was our first river cruise and it was a fabulous experience in the Viking Odin. Food & service were very good, everything was very organized and well executed. The scenery was incredible beautiful and relaxing. We enjoyed our cabin with balcony very much. There were enough walking tours or by motor coach when necessary and daily evening activities on the cruise, if you wanted to participate. We were given free time to explore on our own at each town/city, within the time frame of the cruise. Any query or request was responded to in a prompt and pleasant manner. The hotels Viking booked for us during our cruise while on land were very nice, located in central parts of the city and big breakfast was always included. We have already planned & booked our next Viking experience to the Mediterranean in 2017. Read Less

This was our first river cruise with Viking, and it couldn't have been a better experience. We were met at the airport by our Viking representative and taken to our hotel in Paris. From that point on we were taken care of completely. At all times at our hotels in Paris and Prague, there was a Viking representative available to assist with booking tours or just giving directions. The Odin was very nice - probably the best cruise ship we have experienced - and the crew was friendly and attentive, and the meals were excellent. This was also our first trip to Europe, and we really enjoyed experiencing all of the Medieval castles and small towns along the rivers. If I had to find something to complain about, it would be not having enough time in each port. If you go on the available tour in each port (which were excellent), then you wouldn't have enough time to explore the village completely. I would give up one of the ports to allow more time for the others. However, we enjoyed it so much that we booked another one as soon as we got home for next year. Read Less

We like to see places. With the tour in every port and the river cruising during daylight, our needs were greatly satisfied. The scenery along the rivers was spectacular, and the cities on the tours were unique, historical and very interesting. The accommodations were excellent, but the on-board activities were very limited. We would have liked to have seen more and better entertainment, and an exercise room. The small number of passengers on a cruise like this gave us the opportunity to meet and talk with a lot of people from several countries. The staff were always friendly, very helpful and bent over backwards to make the cruise a pleasant and fun trip. The food was tasty and there was good variety to choose from. The entire cruise was very well organized and coordinated, and all of the ports were interesting. Viking is a cruise line that I would not hesitate to recommend. Read Less

Always intrigued by the Viking River Cruise commercials on Downton Abbey. When we received a brochure for the City of Lights, who could resist a Viking River Cruise sandwiched between Prague and Paris? We decided to do it up right and reserved the Explorer Suite. We were always treated to first class service and had many amenities that went with the suite. We thought it was definitely worth the additional cost, especially since it included Business Class airfare from the States. We aren't "foodies" so weren't really expecting to be wowed by the on board meals and we weren't...always good but nothing extraordinary. Best food we had was on shore. The shore excursions were first class and our guides were knowledgeable and cordial. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, would certainly recommend it to others but there are plenty of items on our "bucket list" that we want to do before booking another river cruise. Sort of "been there, done that". Read Less

My wife and I wanted to try a river cruise after many prior ocean cruises. The Viking Odin was immaculate with beautiful Scandinavian design. The crew was extremely gracious and attentive. The cruise was made especially memorable by the Cruise Director, Claudia Diederix, whose role simply cannot be overstated. Claudia became the face of the cruise, her perpetual smile, humor and client sensitivity unparalleled among industry staff to which we've been exposed over decades of travel. If I had to sum up the trip in a single word it would be "easy." Everything about the excursions, on board arrangements, dining was handled so effortlessly that both my wife and I continually remarked on how well being part of this tour turned out. Aside from the entrée during a single meal, I found the food quite pleasant, with reasonable portions, a welcome change from over loaded plates that encourage over-eating (of course you could always ask for more!). If there was any criticism, and I have to really think to find one, it would be how the Prague city walking tour ended. The tour finished in Prague's Old Town, leaving clients there to make their own way back to the trip designated hotel at the city's outskirts. It was implied that walking back was easy, when in fact to someone unfamiliar with Prague it could be a long, warm walk in late July. My wife and I are avid walkers so this was not a problem for us (and we actually walked the distance several times) but for some of the older clients this was perceived as an unnecessary hardship. There probably should have been the option of a Viking pickup point at a designated time to provide transportation back to the Prague hotel. This sort of transportation was available everywhere else on the cruise so it's absence in Prague for this event was an anomaly that in no way diminishes our overall recommendation which we enthusiastically make without reservation. To end on a more positive note, I commend Viking for the inclusion of a "no-fee" day tour in each destination. It's so annoying on a typical cruise to be charged exorbitant prices for shore excursions. The standard tours (there are optional fee based tours available) were of excellent quality and we took advantage of almost every one. I've little doubt we will travel with Viking again. Read Less

We have traveled a good part of Europe and have toyed with the idea of a river cruise. With the Cities of Lights cruise it gave us the opportunity to extend both our front end stay in Paris and our final stay in Prague and experience river cruising on the Moselle, Rhine and Mein. To say that the cruise exceeded our expectations would be an understatement. Our experience on the Viking Odin was fantastic. The entire crew, amenities, food and cabins were first class. We wouldn't change a thing. Excursions via motor coach in Luxembourg and Germany were well planned, educational and inspiring. Our tour guides in each stop were exceptional. Their knowledge, humor and patience made each excursion something to look forward to. Traveling through the many locks along the rivers was an unexpected thrill and gave us the opportunity to watch the expertise of our captain navigate the Odin through the channels that was inches wides than our ship. We loved the layout of the ship and the food and included wine. The excursions were very well organized with excellent guides. Our Cruise Director, Bojan was truely delightful and he kept us laughing while also making sure that we were all accounted for at every stop. All the staff were friendly and professional. Our previous experiences with Viking River Cruises had been so positive, that we sought to see yet another River, more cities, and learn more. We traveled on the ship Odin from Prague (Bamberg) to Paris (Trier) over 12 days. We explored Prague on our own the day before, and then learned what we saw on the city tour the next day. In Paris, we chose to take optional excursions to maximize our two days there. Everyday was filled with knowledgeable tours, elegant dining and comfort to the extreme living on the ship. With a special diet need, I found the dining extremely accommodating to my diet restrictions. (This is actually an important reason that we enjoy a Viking River Cruise so much.) There was something to do every day, but we were free to stay on the ship and relax or go off on our own as well. Local tour guides are used in each city, and we get a personal, first hand look at the city, it's history and culture. Activities are planned every night to amuse, entertain or educate. The longship Odin was amazing. Five stars to the crew, their care of us, the pleasantness of every person on the crew, and, of course, our Program Director, Claudia. The ship is newer than others we've traveled on and VRC has designed this ship with comfort in mind. This is evident in the cabins where there is more storage, a lovely patio view, housekeeping services to make our stay care-free and amenities that met our every need. Although we enjoyed the scenery and activities so much, we never did explore the TV entertainment! We try to research the trip and cities beforehand, but we missed the number of locks on the Main River which kept the top deck closed until we got to the Rhine River. The view from the top deck is the best view of all. The cruising especially on the Rhine offered spectacular views. We didn't take advantage of fitness on the ship since we got our exercise in on the excursions. While there were leisure tours offered, we always chose the slightly more demanding tours. I logged in an average of 13,000 steps and 11 flights of stairs each day, all filled with fun, enjoyment and rest and water stops to make it seem like I wasn't exercising at all. My favorite kind of vacation! I'll take another Viking River Cruise again, and probably again, in the future. I like where the cruises go, the care of every need for the days of the cruise, the personal tour guides, the comfort of the ship, and most importantly, the people who take care of us during the cruise, meeting every need. My husband and I decided to commemorate our 10th wedding anniversary by going on a trip to Europe. We are avid fans of Downton Abbey, and we were mesmerized by the Viking River Cruise commercials displaying the Ship, and the wonderful breathtaking views from the river. We felt that Viking River Cruise had a well planned cruise, with all meals and beverages included, daily excursions and bonus excursions which were optional, and that it was a wonderful way to relax and not worry about where to go, and what to do each day, as Viking River cruise staff had it all organized and planned out. We were so impressed with the hosts at each place we visited (Czech, Bamburg, Nuremberg, Rudesheim, Miltenberg, Gutenberg, Cochem and Trier, then our week long trip in Paris France). All I can say is that I slept deeply and soundly each night, and woke up early to catch breakfast and mingle with our new friends. Breakfast and Lunch offered healthy choices, (we skipped 1-2 excursions because we wanted to sight see on the ship and enjoy the weather) Dinner was also good, but often I would eat when in the towns so I would definately enjoy the bar area where I was able to get to know the staff. I felt that I was treated like family by Each staff member, especially "Dada" Davorka Dada Grdic, Jindra Theresa, and Claudia Diederix, the program director, all were so helpful and made us feel at home!
