Our previous experiences with Viking River Cruises had been so positive, that we sought to see yet another River, more cities, and learn more. We traveled on the ship Odin from Prague (Bamberg) to Paris (Trier) over 12 days. We explored Prague on our own the day before, and then learned what we saw on the city tour the next day. In Paris, we chose to take optional excursions to maximize our two days there. Everyday was filled with knowledgeable tours, elegant dining and comfort to the extreme living on the ship. With a special diet need, I found the dining extremely accommodating to my diet restrictions. (This is actually an important reason that we enjoy a Viking River Cruise so much.) There was something to do every day, but we were free to stay on the ship and relax or go off on our own as well. Local tour guides are used in each city, and we get a personal, first hand look at the city, it's history and culture. Activities are planned every night to amuse, entertain or educate. The longship Odin was amazing. Five stars to the crew, their care of us, the pleasantness of every person on the crew, and, of course, our Program Director, Claudia. The ship is newer than others we've traveled on and VRC has designed this ship with comfort in mind. This is evident in the cabins where there is more storage, a lovely patio view, housekeeping services to make our stay care-free and amenities that met our every need. Although we enjoyed the scenery and activities so much, we never did explore the TV entertainment! We try to research the trip and cities beforehand, but we missed the number of locks on the Main River which kept the top deck closed until we got to the Rhine River. The view from the top deck is the best view of all. The cruising especially on the Rhine offered spectacular views. We didn't take advantage of fitness on the ship since we got our exercise in on the excursions. While there were leisure tours offered, we always chose the slightly more demanding tours. I logged in an average of 13,000 steps and 11 flights of stairs each day, all filled with fun, enjoyment and rest and water stops to make it seem like I wasn't exercising at all. My favorite kind of vacation! I'll take another Viking River Cruise again, and probably again, in the future. I like where the cruises go, the care of every need for the days of the cruise, the personal tour guides, the comfort of the ship, and most importantly, the people who take care of us during the cruise, meeting every need. Fantastic itinerary. Wonderful staff Superior service. Would highly recommend Viking to all my friends. Looking forward to our next cruise with Viking The excursions ashore were fabulous Meals great Stayed two nights in Prague and added two extra nights in Paris I especially liked how Viking took care of us at the end of the trip. Transporting us from hotel to Charles Degaul airport. They took care of our baggage, signing in and brought us right to the checking in counter. Service top quality to finish our trip on the perfect, full-service finally. The tour guides were absolutely top notch. Each passenger had their own headset so we heard every word and never became separated from our group. Just the right mix of guided tour time and free time at each port of call. Rooms spacious and very nice. We had a French balcony with floor to ceiling slide glass door overlooking the river. Wonderful experience Read Less

After about a dozen ocean cruises we decided to try a river cruise. We chose Viking as they have a very good reputation. We had a French balcony on deck three and had ample room for all our stuff. We started with two days in Paris and ended with two days in Prague. Both cities were amazing. From the moment we got off the plane we were taken excellent care of by the Viking staff. We loved the layout of the ship and the food and included wine. The excursions were very well organized with excellent guides. Our Cruise Director, Bojan was truely delightful and he kept us laughing while also making sure that we were all accounted for at every stop. All the staff were friendly and professional. Although the river levels were high we were able to do the entire trip on the rivers. We purchased coupons for a future cruise with Viking and want to find one that includes Budapest. Read Less

We have traveled a good part of Europe and have toyed with the idea of a river cruise. With the Cities of Lights cruise it gave us the opportunity to extend both our front end stay in Paris and our final stay in Prague and experience river cruising on the Moselle, Rhine and Mein. To say that the cruise exceeded our expectations would be an understatement. Our experience on the Viking Odin was fantastic. The entire crew, amenities, food and cabins were first class. We wouldn't change a thing. Excursions via motor coach in Luxembourg and Germany were well planned, educational and inspiring. Our tour guides in each stop were exceptional. Their knowledge, humor and patience made each excursion something to look forward to. Traveling through the many locks along the rivers was an unexpected thrill and gave us the opportunity to watch the expertise of our captain navigate the Odin through the channels that was inches wides than our ship. We are already planning our next river cruise. Read Less

My wife and I wanted to try a river cruise after many prior ocean cruises. The Viking Odin was immaculate with beautiful Scandinavian design. The crew was extremely gracious and attentive. The cruise was made especially memorable by the Cruise Director, Claudia Diederix, whose role simply cannot be overstated. Claudia became the face of the cruise, her perpetual smile, humor and client sensitivity unparalleled among industry staff to which we've been exposed over decades of travel. If I had to sum up the trip in a single word it would be "easy." Everything about the excursions, on board arrangements, dining was handled so effortlessly that both my wife and I continually remarked on how well being part of this tour turned out. Aside from the entrée during a single meal, I found the food quite pleasant, with reasonable portions, a welcome change from over loaded plates that encourage over-eating (of course you could always ask for more!). If there was any criticism, and I have to really think to find one, it would be how the Prague city walking tour ended. The tour finished in Prague's Old Town, leaving clients there to make their own way back to the trip designated hotel at the city's outskirts. It was implied that walking back was easy, when in fact to someone unfamiliar with Prague it could be a long, warm walk in late July. My wife and I are avid walkers so this was not a problem for us (and we actually walked the distance several times) but for some of the older clients this was perceived as an unnecessary hardship. There probably should have been the option of a Viking pickup point at a designated time to provide transportation back to the Prague hotel. This sort of transportation was available everywhere else on the cruise so it's absence in Prague for this event was an anomaly that in no way diminishes our overall recommendation which we enthusiastically make without reservation. To end on a more positive note, I commend Viking for the inclusion of a "no-fee" day tour in each destination. It's so annoying on a typical cruise to be charged exorbitant prices for shore excursions. The standard tours (there are optional fee based tours available) were of excellent quality and we took advantage of almost every one. I've little doubt we will travel with Viking again. Read Less

Always intrigued by the Viking River Cruise commercials on Downton Abbey. When we received a brochure for the City of Lights, who could resist a Viking River Cruise sandwiched between Prague and Paris? We decided to do it up right and reserved the Explorer Suite. We were always treated to first class service and had many amenities that went with the suite. We thought it was definitely worth the additional cost, especially since it included Business Class airfare from the States. We aren't "foodies" so weren't really expecting to be wowed by the on board meals and we weren't...always good but nothing extraordinary. Best food we had was on shore. The shore excursions were first class and our guides were knowledgeable and cordial. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, would certainly recommend it to others but there are plenty of items on our "bucket list" that we want to do before booking another river cruise. Sort of "been there, done that". Read Less

We like to see places. With the tour in every port and the river cruising during daylight, our needs were greatly satisfied. The scenery along the rivers was spectacular, and the cities on the tours were unique, historical and very interesting. The accommodations were excellent, but the on-board activities were very limited. We would have liked to have seen more and better entertainment, and an exercise room. The small number of passengers on a cruise like this gave us the opportunity to meet and talk with a lot of people from several countries. The staff were always friendly, very helpful and bent over backwards to make the cruise a pleasant and fun trip. The food was tasty and there was good variety to choose from. The entire cruise was very well organized and coordinated, and all of the ports were interesting. Viking is a cruise line that I would not hesitate to recommend. Read Less

This was our first river cruise with Viking, and it couldn't have been a better experience. We were met at the airport by our Viking representative and taken to our hotel in Paris. From that point on we were taken care of completely. At all times at our hotels in Paris and Prague, there was a Viking representative available to assist with booking tours or just giving directions. The Odin was very nice - probably the best cruise ship we have experienced - and the crew was friendly and attentive, and the meals were excellent. This was also our first trip to Europe, and we really enjoyed experiencing all of the Medieval castles and small towns along the rivers. If I had to find something to complain about, it would be not having enough time in each port. If you go on the available tour in each port (which were excellent), then you wouldn't have enough time to explore the village completely. I would give up one of the ports to allow more time for the others. However, we enjoyed it so much that we booked another one as soon as we got home for next year. Read Less

My man wanted to go on a river cruise in that part of the world. It was our first river cruise and it was a fabulous experience in the Viking Odin. Food & service were very good, everything was very organized and well executed. The scenery was incredible beautiful and relaxing. We enjoyed our cabin with balcony very much. There were enough walking tours or by motor coach when necessary and daily evening activities on the cruise, if you wanted to participate. We were given free time to explore on our own at each town/city, within the time frame of the cruise. Any query or request was responded to in a prompt and pleasant manner. The hotels Viking booked for us during our cruise while on land were very nice, located in central parts of the city and big breakfast was always included. We have already planned & booked our next Viking experience to the Mediterranean in 2017. Read Less

This will not be our last cruise with Viking. The embarkations & disembarkations were seamless. Dining on the ship was fantastic. So many choices for food for all three meals and all of it delicious. Each stop had an included tour that was always informative, the guides were always well versed. Got lots of walking and sightseeing in every day. We did an extension on both ends of our cruise and spent 4 days in Prague which was absolutely amazing. The hotel arrangements there were incredible. Also spent three full days in Paris. The Paris hotel was in a great location but the hotel bar was ridiculously priced. Thankfully there were lots of cheaper places around for food and drinks that were within a couple of blocks walking distance. Paris was a bit packed when we were there due to the UEFA cup but got to see nearly everything we wanted to. Food in Paris was divine. If you're ever in Cochem, Germany you must get the flammkuchen. Onboard activities were pretty fun. The onboard glass blowing demonstration was very entertaining and had to be one of my favorite nights on the ship. The crew throughout could not have been any better. The program director was amazing, restaurant and bar staff were excellent, accommodating and always friendly. Our cabins were excellent, staff in charge of cleaning did special presentations of your room for anniversaries and birthdays. We will definitely be sailing with Viking again. Read Less
