We wanted to take my daughter and some of her friends on a short cruise as a graduation present. We chose Carnival because it was an economical way to travel. Meals and entertainment were included in the price of the trip. Plus, it departed from Charleston SC, which is close to our house, so we didn’t have to pay for airfare. We have happily and satisfactorily cruised many times with Royal Caribbean, Windstar, Regent and Seabourn. If you are looking for an enjoyable and relaxing vacation don’t take a Carnival cruise. Carnival Sunshine has a spring break meets beer commercial atmosphere. The staff is overworked trying to clean up after all the obnoxious drunk cruisers. We were the 1st tender to beautiful Half Moon Cay and the beach was stunningly beautiful! We were the last tender off the Island and as we retraced our steps back to the tender the beach was literally trashed. I wish I had taken a picture. It was as if somebody took a dumpster filled with beer cans and empty drinking cups and scattered them on the beach! This is not an exaggeration. We ended up paying extra and eating in their specialty restaurants (very good) every night because the dining room was average and stressful. We booked spa appointments (very good) to avoid the crowds in the main areas. Thankfully our room was big and had a triple long balcony so we had peace there. Check in and check out was shockingly easy and organized. Carnival Sunshine is like a floating raunchy dirty hotel with a seedy nightclub and a crappy all you can eat buffet attached. If that is what you are looking for in a vacation then Carnival Sunshine is for you. NEVER AGAIN! Read Less

I chose this cruise because I had a pleasant experience with Carnival 2 years ago on the Carnival Liberty. I should have chosen another cruise line, the first trip seemed to be a one-off lucky good time. SHIP CONDITION: The sunshine is dirty, tired, and cabins DO smell as reported in other reviews. The porter entered our room without permission, and with the DND tag hanging on the door on the first night of the trip. My 16 year old and I were both horrified. There was no explanation given for the mistake. When we boarded the ship and entered our cabin it smelled like foul body odor, carpets were stained, the bathroom was dirty. We thought it would be nice/special because I paid extra for the “Cloud 9 Spa Balcony Cabin”. Clearly a huge waste if money! I was also told by Carnival’s Customer Service when I booked the room that ALL Spa services were included with the cost of the cabin... Not true. Anything to make a sale I suppose, or horrible training of Carnival staff. POOLS: The 3 so called pools are tiny, dirty, and don’t adequately serve the number of passengers (approx 5,000). One of which is the waterslide landing pool, which is considered a “swimming pool” and advertised as such. We did not use any pool on-board the ship due to filthy conditions. Deck floors were sticky and filthy, all around gross environment. PORT CONDITIONS: The Charleston port was awful, like a state fair pole barn. Hot, foul smelling, and we were herded like cattle despite purchasing “Faster to the Fun”. Upon arrival it was awful, and departure was even worse. Employees were rude and acted as if we were not welcome. A shame because Charleston is beautiful... Apparently many people drive from Charlotte and other nearby locations to use this port. It is not managed professionally, it was extremely hot and everyone was moody. FOOD: The food was frankly terrible. The buffet food was dull, repetitive, and similar to school cafeteria food. Over or undercooked, cold, and ingredients were not posted. (I have food allergies). The saving grace was Guy’s Burger Joint. That was good, and I could trust it. Even the buffet desserts were awful. One fellow passenger chose chocolate cake and said to me “Well if I add a heap of chocolate sauce it might then taste like chocolate!”. We did not eat in any of the restaurants on-board for fear the food would be just as bad and we would have to pay extra for more bad food. Room service was also poor. Coffee was bad, half and half was delivered in a plastic cup. Simple chicken tenders from room service were over-cooked and non-edible. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The customer service was terrible onboard and on excursion shuttles. People were not friendly, there was no excitement in the air. It was dull because our hosts were dull. We were not treated as guests who in some instances paid a great deal of money for the cruise. Honestly it felt as if we were a burden that the staff didn’t want to deal with. We seemed to be an added chore. Our shuttle to Blue Lagoon Island was “ok”’on the way over. We were told we could return to Nassau at 1:15. We made sure to book our VIP Dolphin Swim early so we could go shopping before we had to board the ship. We waited in the heat for the 1:15 shuttle, but when it arrived the captain advised he was not transporting anyone until 2:15. At least 100 people were in line, and we asked why. He simply said the shuttle was cancelled, we had to wait. After many people complained he relented and allowed us to board. On the way back to port the music was blasted so loudly that we had to cover our ears, many of us complained with no resolution. Almost comical in hindsight, rows of passengers with our fingers in our ears! And again, the crew was very rude. By the time we got back to port we only had time to shop in the port shops, which are questionable at best. We didn’t feel safe, so we returned to the ship with no cool Nassau souvenirs. This was absolutely unacceptable. AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION SERVICES In Charleston you can Uber to and from the airport for $40.00 total. The Carnival transportation is $30.00 per person per destination for a total of $120.00 for two passengers. The transport service was seriously disorganized. I paid for transportation from the airport to the ship, with the intention of price shopping Uber for the ride back to the airport. On my way to the airport (to get to Charleston) I called Carnival to make sure my transportation was lined up because I had received nothing in my cruise documents except a notation that I had purchased that “excursion”. The Customer Service employee told me I had not purchased transportation. I advised I had my receipt in my hand, and tried to give her the confirmation number. She wouldn’t take the number and said my payment was not processed. She then told me to call the shuttle company! She gave me the number rather than calling herself. I proceeded to call them. I was told that my daughter and I were listed as confirmed passengers and that the Carnival employees were not trained properly on a new internal system. Needless to say, after price shopping we chose Uber for our trip back to the airport when we left after the cruise. Carnival charges MUCH TOO MUCH for airport to pier/ pier to airport shuttle service. They make you believe you “need” to purchase through them, paying exorbitant fees. OVERALL EXPERIENCE: The Carnival Sunshine, as I said, is an old and tired ship. The employees act as if they are old and tired too. I consider this cruise to have been a huge waste of money, and will not ever cruise on this particular ship-if I even cruise Carnival-again. If I was offered a free cruise from Carnival via Charleston I would not accept because it was such an awful experience. It is so disappointing when you look forward to, and pay for a trip that is meant to create meaningful memories, and walk away with this. A whole lot of nothing except shoppers remorse. ADVICE: Price shop ALL cruise lines. They all have specials, don’t assume Carnival is all you can afford. The sunshine was basically a floating bar providing transportation to Nassau. Look at all of your options, I wish I had but was under the impression that I was getting a good deal because I am a VIPF member due to past cruises. Once I realized I had over-paid it was too late to cancel the trip. And most importantly, don’t cruise from Charleston, SC unless you are willing to deal with undesirable circumstances. Read Less

Absolutely awful cruise to go on as a honeymoon, should have just spent the entire week in Charleston instead of getting on the boat. Cons: Drinks should not include 18 percent gratuity for just grabbing a beer out of the cooler and should not be around 8 ish per beer. Toilets had no water in them and I had to fill the toilet with water just to get everything down. Breakfast was awful, lunch selections good, service at dinner all but two nights was terrible and should not have charged us the extra server tip. Definitely not worth the money. Not enough selection of engaging events for mid 20 year olds when it rained all day when we were at seas on those specific days. Did not purchase alcohol package and glad we didn’t bc you can’t even use it at half moon cay. Had our drinks confiscated from us at the beginning and they didn’t give a damn about returning them to us at the end of the cruise. 1 bottle of wine per person and they couldn’t even return it to us. Lunch on half moon cay was decent but had to stand in a line forever to get it. They sit you like a foot from dinner guests and we personally like space when we eat. Don’t want to listen to others conversations. Things advertised on website are not the same as what is actually on ship. Laundry rooms suck and do not dry clothes even though they advertise as being new. Pros Nice room stewards Half moon cay is beautiful Overall: would not recommend this to a young couple who have other bills to pay, they will stick you with every little thing they can. Will not be going on carnival again. Nothing is engaged towards our age group when weather doesn’t allow you to lay by pools. If someone from carnival sees this they should just refund our money bc it was not geared towards our age group as we walked around bored the two days it rained when we were at sea. Read Less

I’ve been on 20+ cruises, mainly on Royal Caribbean. I went with a group of girlfriends on Carnival Sunshine. We live 2hrs from Charleston and is why we chose this ship. Upon arrival all three of our rooms was HOT. We were on deck 9 which was the “Spa” level. It was so bad 2 of the ladies slept on the balcony the first night just to get some relief in their room. We had maintenance check our temperature in our room twice on our four day cruise and it was 75* so we had to shut the curtains during the day to help which defeats having a room with a balcony and seeing the view. Thank goodness I brought a fan from home or we would have been really miserable getting ready for dinner each night and at night sleeping. We went to lunch at the buffet twice and couldn’t finish our meal because it was so hot in there too. One evening all three rooms lost power as we were getting ready for dinner. We called guest services which in turn told us we were plugging in too many things at once, after about 30 min they fixed the issue but we were late for dinner. The food on the ship was OK. My best meal was room service BLT if that says anything. If your considering the FTTF, do it. It’s worth it. We had a great time with each other and that’s what it was about but would I go on this ship or recommend it, NO!!! Read Less

I don't even know where to start!!! I have been spoiled by Disney cruises and now that my daughter feels she is too "old" to travel Disney we choose Carnival out Charleston, SC Cons: 1. Don't book/pay for ANYTHING in advance prior to getting on the ship. Trust me you will have to fight/dispute charges later, so just pay when you get there. 2. Don't bother to reserve arrival/boarding time or pay for parking in advance because regardless if you pay in advance, or choose a boarding time, it is first come first serve. We waited in line for 1 hour 25 minutes just to park! 3. Be prepared to park your car and then take a van/bus to the boat!!! Crazy! 4. Be prepared to hike up 3 levels of ramp prior to getting on the boat. 5. Please, please....BRING YOUR OWN SEASONING!!! The food is soooooo bland!!! 6. Bring your own soda and water. The drinks provided for "free" are HORRIBLE!!!! 7. Not much to do on the ship. Most of the activities weren't too engaging and didn't cater to the vast mix of ethnicities on the boat. 8. Speciality restaurants are a JOKE!!! The Fahrenheit 555 had the worst view. I can't tell you have many times I tried to avoid looking out at the life boats while eating, but it was the only view they had to offer! They took forever to serve the food. And cruising is supposed to be an opportunity to taste different types of food. Be prepared to only select 1 option from the starter, main and dessert menus. You can't try additional items. The price of the steakhouse on the Carnival cruise is about the same price as the Disney Palo, and trust me, you will leave the Disney restaurant stuffed from the vast amount of options you get to choose from. 9. If you purchase the "Bubbly" soda package, be prepared to be treated as less than! The servers know that a can of soda more than likely won't come with a tip, so that take their sweet time making your drink. If you don't watch them, they will serve you left over soda from previous cans, so ask for ice and the entire can and pour it yourself. After all, you are paying $40+ for soda if on a 4 day cruise. 10. The absolute worst was getting off the boat. They tell you to sit in the Liquid Lounge and line up your luggage because this is the only way to depart the ship. While you are waiting the entire remaining passengers on the ship are upstairs getting off the boat without lining up. So we sat in the Liquid Lounge for NOTHING!! 11. Be prepared to take a 10-15 min ride to the Princess Cay beach. NOTHING about this ship is just one-stop. Everything requires a bus, van or boat to get to the next point of interest. 12. I learned they don't drain the pool every night. By the 2nd afternoon the water was so murky that I didn't allow my daughter to swim. DISGUSTING! Pros: 1. Kids Camp Ocean was great. At least from a kids point of view but they have the nerve to charge after 10pm. That is the time when most adults are up and about! Overall a terrible experience. I tried my best to be positive, but there was just nothing positive outside of getting amazing rest once I was able to adjust to the hard mattress or the lumpy couch. Katute was great at providing services for the cabin. Really nice gentleman! Will never travel with Carnival again. This was my first and last experience! Read Less

We had been looking forward to this cruise for sooooo long. It was the first one for my husband and the second one for me (although mine was 20 years ago on the no longer existing Big Red Boat). Unfortunately, was not a very good experience for either one of us and will definitely not go back on this one. Cons: *Embarkation was a nightmare! The parking and the walking just to get to the building to check-in should have been our first red flag *Not impressed with the food at all. I can't imagine that Guy Fieri would put his stamp of approval on the burgers. *Buffet ran out of food during peak dining hours at breakfast, lunch & dinner *Not enough help at the food stations, especially the Pizzeria. I felt really bad for that one poor guy trying to keep up with all the pizza orders. *You are encouraged to purchase spa services, excursions, drink packages, etc. online. However, the inclusion of gratuity is not consistent so we were unpleasantly surprised by a $50 gratuity added to our spa service that we had pre-ordered online. *If you pre-order spa services online, they are cheaper but at that point you don't have an itinerary so it is easy to book at an inconvenient time. *NOTHING started on time! Our safety meeting was 45 minutes late which meant we were late leaving port. Both of our spa services were 30 minutes late. Bingo never started on time. Everything was hurry up and wait. *Smoking only allowed in a small section on Deck 10. Well guess what? Parents taking their children to the child activity centers have to walk right through that area. REALLY? *Yes, you can smoke in some areas of the casino and we found out from fellow cruisers that there is a very small area you can smoke in on Deck 3, but the staff doesn't tell you that. *Did you know that the shops aren't open when you are in any port? We didn't. Wasn't fun to run out of cigarettes and have to wait almost 3 hours to purchase some more. *They stop bar service at 5:00 PM on Deck 10 every day. Why? *We did casual photos on board one evening. At each background, we asked if we would be able to purchase portraits of different sizes and were told yes. Went to purchase photos and 8X10 was all that is available for those photo shoots. *Our first massages ever were in the Cloud 9 Spa. I was not impressed. After they talked us into upgrading our service and then charged us incorrectly, they kept trying to push products even after us telling them politely no thank you several times. I had so many sore spots on my back for several days that I flinched when my husband would find one. *The itinerary and app featured a preview of a new, rare color changing gemstone that was going to be featured on board. The sign sat outside of the jewelry store every day. The day/time of the event, we went to check it out only to find out that the jewelry never made it on the ship. Ok, so why would you keep physically putting the sign out every day? *After we got back on board from Half Moon Cay, activities were very lacking. Couldn't they have at least had a DJ on the Lido deck? *They ask you to settle your Ship & Sign account on Day 4. So, they have 2 people working guest services - 2! Spending almost 2 hours in line to dispute charges on your account definitely does not help with the fact that you were already really disappointed with the entire experience. Pros: *We were allowed to board before our scheduled check in time *We were upgraded to a Cloud 9 Spa balcony room which was amazing and had a great location. Our room steward, Jimi was awesome! *Loved the heated seats in the Thermal Suites *We had a cabana at Half Moon Cay. So worth it (even though our cabana was the only one that wasn't ready when we got there). Half Moon Cay was absolutely stunning and having the cabana to go back to to cool off and relax was perfect! The cabanas have air conditioning, ceiling fan and a misting fan. You are provided with a huge bag of tortilla chips, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, veggie and fruit trays, 2 large water bottles, 2 sodas per person, snorkel gear, water floats, an outdoor shower, 2 lounge chairs and a table with 4 chairs. *We pre-ordered the Cheers drink package. Definitely worth it! *Disembarkation was a bit better. They did have shuttles that took you and your luggage (that you had to bring off the ship by yourself) from the ship to a midpoint in the parking lot. *The Epic Rock show was phenomenal! This is one not to miss! *We finally found the omelet station on Day 3 which helped make breakfast better. We did not eat in the dining room at all. Looked at the dining room menu each day and nothing sounded good. We tried most of the different food stations but weren't overly thrilled with any of them - the food quality or the service. For first time cruisers, the lack of communication and direction was very disappointing. Unfortunately, I can't give this experience more than a 2 out of 10. Extremely disappointed overall! Read Less

This was our first cruise and unfortunately very disappointed to say the least. This should not be listed as a “family friendly “ cruise line.Drunk adults everywhere, unsupervised children running and screaming down the halls,I’m honestly shocked that families bring small children and expose them to that atmosphere. We attempted several shows to get away but there was no escape including the pool that was way too small to enjoy. The food was mediocre at best on the ship and the buffet provided at Half Moon Cay was a disaster! Who goes to the Bahamas to eat cheap hamburgers and hotdogs with 3,000 people at one buffet?? The highlight of our cruise was the VIP dolphin excursion❤️we all enjoyed the dolphin interaction and would recommend. Our first impression is that Carnival caters to adults only. We will stay clear of Carnival and perhaps stick to quiet relaxing retreats we can enjoy as a family. Read Less

Had to wait in a line for anytime dining just to get a table assigned and then go downstairs to the dining room to request seating. What????? How stupid. Cabin service was offered only once a day either am or pm. so once you go to the crowded pools with a bunch of drunks and yelling kids you have to wait until the next day to get a dry towel. food was horrible, dry, cold, no flavor etc. Pool areas were occupied by tons of young fall down loud drunks. We cruise about 1 x every 2 years. This ship and staff does not need to be in service. The only good thing was Mikey the cruise director. The ship was really dirty ( dust everywhere, smelled like feces on many floors including one with a dining room. Very few sanitizer stations. Same napkin laid in a hallway for 7 days. Sheets were stained. Buffet was way less exciting than Shoney’s or Big Boy for northerners. Sister was hospitalized with community acquired pneumonia day after we got back and I have been on meds ever since. Met another family on the cruise that 2 of them caught lice. NEVER AGAIN. First of all, I must say that our cabin steward was an absolute sweetheart. Many of the ship crew were also great. The downfall is that the ship is old and small. The metal around the decks is painted over eaten away steel. We found holes throughout the railings. The carpets throughout are old and many sofa/restaurant bench upholstery have stains. There is a peculiar smell about the ship. Many times there are sewage and/or grey water smells. The buffet was subpar. Desserts were great the first night then thereafter were dry and flavorless. The sit-down dining was better but not outstanding. The ship lacked entertainment. There was a comedy show that was good. Many of the shows in the liquid lounge revolved around what to buy on the islands and promoted their sales in their ship stores. The ship was small and if you are planning a long cruise you might want to choose one with many stops so you are not bored to death multiple days at seas. We were in a cabin with a window. The room was clean the bathroom was dirty in corners with caked on dirt. I suppose they don't have time for deep cleaning since a steward told me when we were leaving the ship that they were boarding again in one day. This ship does not compare to Royal Carribean or MSC. We were disappointed and felt it was a major waste of money. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the intinerary and our first 8 day. But this ship is terribly over crowded and badly redesigned. When they refurbished this ship in 2013 they added more cabins, removed a pool and added huge slides on top in back. So very unstable and rocky in only 6 - 8 foot swells. On fun days at sea it was terrible, we could not even get a lounge chair anywhere in the adult only area. There were fights over chairs and security had to come. There is only 1 pool and an oversized hot tub of a pool in serenity area. I will never go on this ship again and too long of lines for food. They added specialty restaurants that are an up charge. Not good locker room space or showers in workout area. All the other ships had a nice steam room off men’s locker room for free. This one has a coed one they wanted to charge $159 per week for it. This ship is the worst of 8 we have cruised on. Spent a lot of money to be very disappointed! Our previous 7 cruises on other Carnival ships were good! Read Less

I have cruised with Carnival a number of times. This was to be my big 60 birthday cruise. I can go out of Baltimore but decided to try the Sunshine, plus it was a premiere cruise. What a total disappointment. The staff is way over worked and this is why things are not up to standard of Carnival ( surely not the fault of the staff). I run a hotel and know that service is effected by a over worked staff. The blame starts at the top. 1. 45 min to get a drink in the Casino. 2. cigarettes overflowing in ash trays 3. being told I needed to drag my luggage up the gang to the ship to my room, with a disabled sister with me. 4. liquor being left in our room that was purchased by someone else but my sister wrote them a note leaving it under the door of the guest telling them where to find their purchases. 5. shore excursions at St Kit (beach day at Carambola Beach Club ) was the worst !!! 20 min there I got a ride back to port.. My sister contacted the shore excursion desk ship, said they would contact me later that day, guess what no contact by anybody. 6. I only saw the casino host, and I am guessing that was her conducting the Premier Cruise one time. Never out in the Casino checking on guest. I could go on but I think you understand where I am coming from. I will be sailing again in June on the Pride, where I always feel welcome. I have not judged Carnival as a whole on one ship. But I will say this management better get a handle because I know for a fact I was not the only guest to feel this way. Its sad to be so excited about a trip and come away so disappointed.. Read Less

Overcrowded ship, not enough employees, long waits for food at dinner (6:00 seating), food quality in dining room noticeably lower than all my past cruises. Our cruise director made too many loud and annoying announcements. He interrupted the poolside movie twice and it took over 20 minutes for anyone to turn it back on (and it did not start in the right place). No one seemed to notice it had turned off until guests went and told someone. Room dusty and no robes in cabin anymore. Room service (sandwiches, etc.) no longer free. Evening stage shows noticeably worse than in years past. No lobster on elegant night (unless we paid $20 per person). Lobster has been a part of all the other cruise elegant nights we have attended. I couldn't believe how far downhill Carnival had gone since my last cruise 2 years ago. This was our 6th cruise together (16 people), and it was unanimously and by far the worst with many disappointments each and every day. There were never enough lounge chairs (fights and yelling broke out on board on the pool deck on the day that we couldn't stop at Amber Cove and had an unexpected "fun" day at sea). Once the announcement that we wouldn't visit Amber Cove was made, people were running and grabbing chairs out of the chair stacks, fighting over them ,and even bringing the chairs off their balconies just to have a place to sit. In the stateroom, the sofa "bed" for the third person was an absolute joke. A mattress, longer than the small sofa, was placed on top of the loveseat size sofa, and the overhang of the mattress was supported by a pillow on the floor. The bed was not suitable for an adult and we were not warned that it would be this short. Carnival, please provide better service and stop cutting amenities. Your longtime customers notice every cut. If you continue to cut corners and cut costs by serving low quality food and reducing amenities, I believe you will see a downturn in the type of clientele you attract. Read Less

Hello everyone. I want you to think twice before booking a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line. I recently cruised with them for the first time on 11/2/18 on the Carnival Sunshine. It was my wife’s and I honeymoon. We got married last year and booked the cruise back in March but could not cruise until November because we are on a strict budget. The cruise was good until we woke up on our 3rd morning. My wife was getting ready for the day and woke me up in a frenzy as our cabin began to flood. She was petrified, as she has never been on a cruise, but knows water on a boat is never a good sign. I hopped out of bed and noticed our room was starting to flood from the bathroom. It was very disgusting. There was all sorts of nasty floating in the water(they mentioned it was Grey & Black water). I called guest services right away and was told repairmen are in route to our room. We were told to come up to guest services. Upon arriving at guest service I was told to go to breakfast while they work on the problem, and to come back to guest service after breakfast. After breakfast we went back to guest services and I was told “that was a fast” and they were still working on the issue. 2 hours later the found us a room because the cruise was sold out. So I was told I had to go back to the room and pack everything up so we can get our new room. When I got back to our flooded room the door was propped open water was flooding out into the hallway, and no one was watching our room. Upon inspecting / repacking everything up in almost ankle high water I noticed my iPad that was on the bed was missing. So I ran back to guest services yet again and reported this. I mentioned to them the door was wide open and no one was watching my belongings as my wife and I were shuffled off elsewhere while they fixed the broken pipe in the wall. Long story short our honeymoon was ruined by this, guest services did nothing for us on the boat. We were told many times we had to call guest services about “our issues”. When we finally got off the ship and I called customer services all they could offer me and my wife for our troubles and a stolen iPad was $100 onboard credit Read Less

The experience started with extremely large groups of people that taunted your guests, played explicit music, beat their girlfriends, fought with people at the port that were not like them, slept all day (Do not disturb signs on the doors) so that they could be up all night slamming doors, yelling, swearing and assaulting their partners. These people would cut in all of the lines at the shows, at dinner, etc. When you open your cabin door to see why there was yelling in the hallway @ 3:00 a.m., you were told "mind your **** business." There had to be security at the doors of the show because these "thugs" were walking to the front of a line that people had been standing in for one hour and daring anybody to say anything. Sitting in the shows, these groups were all around taunting people, trying to start a fight. When I complained at the Customer Service desk, all they did was to take down my cabin number. They wanted to know what the cabin number/s was of the offensive groups of people but since I couldn't identify all of the cabins where these massive groups of people were staying, they could not do anything. The staff at the comedy club had to put someone in front of the doors to stop the chaos. I did not feel safe for one minute while on this ship. This vacation was ruined and I think that about ½ of the people on that ship should receive a refund while the other half are the culprits. These people demonstrated hateful, thug like existence on this cruise from hell. Read Less

I have cruised over 20x including carnival, royal and ncl. My new bride has never cruised and I wanted to try a cruise with her to see if she would like it and be ok with sailing with the idea we would book a Mediterranean cruise if she did enjoy cruising. I assured her these new large ships were safe and enjoyable, I explained the food was good etc.... Forward to the Sunshine, the most horrific cruise experience I have had in over 25 years of cruising. The food was sub par in the main dining room so I decided to try the steakhouse, I spent $100 for dinner and wine only to be served supermarket quality steak. The ship leaned and caused a news worthy panic, I understand electro-mechanical issues happen but the handling of the situation was deplorable. We were sitting in the piano bar drinking wine and trying our best to have a good time, the ship leaned, glassses and bottles fell from tables, people were screaming and we were not sure what was happening. My wife looked to me for guidance and I remained calm, I looked to the 2 crew members in the bar for guidance and 1 jumped up, grabbed his iPad and ran out, the other started to cry. At this point I became nervous and decided we should leave the area, my wife noticed all the panic and she started to panic. Another passenger told everyone to lean on the hallway wall, again no direction from the crew. When the ship leveled out we did not discover until the next day the cause of the incident, a circuit breaker for the stabilizer had tripped, it happens, crew members running and crying should never happen. I’m trying my best to convince my wife that cruising is not like this, the next morning we wake early and head to the serenity deck, blue sky, cup of coffee warm sun, finally relaxation.... at 8am the speaker behind our loungers starts blaring the ships events every 20 to 25 minutes, serenity?? More like insanity! The next day the cruise line applied a $ 50 pp credit to our sail account, the bottle of wine I lost in the wine bar was more than that combined with the realization my wife may never cruise again, a passion of mine that I want to enjoy with her makes me blame carnival for the worst cruise ever. When the ship reached the first stop some passengers needed medical care while others refused to reboard and flew home. I later found out they received a full refund and paid airfare with a $250 cruise credit, when I called the cruise line to demand a refund they explained that I did not fly home. I was never offered the option and a follow up call from a supervisor did not offer any compensation. I emailed the carnival media rep and the ceo, no one is responding, all I can do now is let everyone know how they treat their customers. Ironically this cruise put me at VIFP gold status, LOL,, don’t worry I will be taking my business elsewhere. The cruise line downplayed the incident but I’m sure they were not there to witness customers in wheelchairs or walking around with life jackets at dinner. My wife has had open heart surgery, we don’t need this aggravation. If you want details on the Sunshine please leave me a message but I have to recommend Royal or NCL! Read Less

NEVER again!! this ship was HORRIBLE. food in the dining room was cold and bland cramped cabins you would think ypu would have more room in a balcony NOT.. no AC for 2 days!! we had to call customer service and maintenance twice we didn't have air and had to leave our balcony door open for air! entertainment was crap, comedians were not funny, even karaoke was boring, it rained a few days but carnival cant control the weather. Grand Turk was the best thing about my trip, I'm jist glad I lived to tell about it, traumatized but alive. Carnival is slipping big time , not even a lobster tail for dinner, couldn't wait to get off that ship! cruise director was ok. Read Less

There is so much wrong on this ship! There is holes under the carpet so be careful you will fall, hot water doesn't work in some of the rooms, some of the rooms flood due to leaking pipes, it takes 2.5 hours for supper so you will miss some of the shows, hot tub stayed broken, water coming out of the light fixture from a flooded floor, the motor will stop working and leave you stranded so you can not make all of the port of calls you paid for, staff is not that friendly because it appears they are overworked, don't bother paying for the soda because none of the staff will come by to take your order or get you another can of soda, they play the same music over and over and over and over, and so much more. Due to electrical problems we did not make it to grand Turk which have us two back to back boring sea days. The cruise director said that they were working hard to provide activities but they did not . I have never been so bored on a cruise. The staff was not friendly and guest services did not provide good customer service. We had to deal with roaches in our cabin and wet stink carpet. The food selection wAs terrible after 230pm you could only eat Guy’s , pizza or sandwiches. They started closing the dinner buffet around 7ish and the food was not food. I would not recommend this ship. Most people complained the whole trip. Guest services line were always long , the lines for food were long . I could not wait to get off this ship Read Less

The Carnival Sunshine is a Destiny-Class ship that was originally designed to carry 2,600 passengers. After a $150M refit and rechristening in 2013, space to fit 400 more passengers was added—a more than 15% increase in passenger capacity—but no more crew were added and it certainly appears no more space in the common areas was added to accommodate that increase. As a result, every day on the Carnival Sunshine is a struggle with our fellow passengers to compete for limited space at the various eateries (that don’t have additional expense, that is), limited numbers of tables/chairs to enjoy your food, limited numbers of deck chairs to enjoy the outdoors, and limited space to enjoy the shows. The overcrowding on the “new” Carnival Sunshine is maddening, frustrating, and quickly douses enthusiasm for the cruise experience. We are cruising as part of a large family group and this 8-day Cruise was chosen because of the Sunshine refit and the extra cruising day. However, both of these things are now playing against us. We are now halfway through the cruise but are eagerly anticipating the last day—an emotion we have never experienced on a cruise before. This is our 6th and will be our final Carnival cruise. It is also, unfortunately, our most expensive and most disappointing Carnival experience. The overcrowding is not the only issue. Carnival offers a basic and an upgraded internet data plan. Both are very expensive. You can try the basic plan but will likely find it relatively useless. So they then advertise the upgrade for an additional $45 and mention “satellite internet “ fast enough to Skype on. We do NOT recommend it as even the upgraded plan has limited coverage on the ship and moves at a snails pace—certainly not fast enough to accomplish much of anything. At guest services, one passenger complained but the crew member pointed out that his phone WAS connected and Carnival made no guarantees about the speed. As I write this, I am in port using Verizon’s travel plan and not the Carnival internet package I purchased. We purchased an aft ocean view suite and it was a good size with a jacuzzi bath tub. Unfortunately, our second morning here we woke up to find the bedroom carpet flooded after a pipe in the bathtub busted. This meant we were effectively kicked out of our room for 2 days while they shut off the electric, did the plumbing work, disinfected and cleaned the carpet, and brought in industrial blowers to dry everything. We couldn’t use the tub or shower and, in order to bathe, had to stand in line at guest services to trade out our key card for an empty cabin, lug our toiletries across the ship to a small interior cabin with a tiny shower to bathe, and then stand in line again to trade the key card out again to get back in to our cabin. For these two days of problems—on At Sea days, nonetheless—Carnival’s guest services offered $150 onboard credit. I scoffed and told them that was ridiculous. Guest Services said that $150 is what 2 days of losing our Suite is worth. However, I pointed out I was paying $700 per day so those 2 days were worth $1400 to me. I was told: “Tough. In these situations, Carnival makes the rules.” We were not the only people with problems. Another couple in our party in an extended aft-balcony State Room on Deck 6 can not use their balcony because of about 1-2” of standing water that has not been remedied since Day One. Still an additional couple with the same class stateroom on Deck 7 have complained about paint splatter and grime coating their balcony door and poor service from their room steward. One other guest I met staying in a Serenity-level balcony state room tells me there is a foul smell in their bathroom that, after 4 days, has yet to be remedied. As for our steward, we have had great service from her and her assistants. The deck supervisor was responsive and helpful during the two days of problems dealing with flooding in our cabin. While our wait staff lacks the showmanship of some other waiters, they are still very responsive, respectful, and kind. So all in all, the crew we have dealt with—aside from guest services—have been awesome. A couple positive notes—the entertainment has been good. Dave in the Piano Bar is so great, the comedians have been top notch, and the illusionist Jackson Rayne was captivating. Unfortunately, the theater now doubles as the dance club and is much smaller than on other ships and the shows and karaoke bounces around the ship in small venues that means fewer seats and more run-ins with other frustrated guests. In conclusion, I must STRONGLY encourage any would-be cruisers to avoid Carnival Cruise Lines altogether—or at least the Carnival Sunshine. I truly believe there is a systemic problem with Carnival Cruise Lines that has been growing worse and we have experienced it on each cruise we have taken since 2010. From a formerly very loyal Carnival cruiser—who has avoided joining his in-laws on one of their annual Royal Caribbean cruises—I strongly recommend going with another cruise line. We will be switching to Royal Caribbean next year and won’t look back. Read Less

Let me start with the FEW things that were good. 1. Embarkation and Debarkation - Carnival has it done to a science on how to get folks on and off the boat with very little wait or disruption...We came at our appointed time and spent less than 15 mins in line getting on the boat, we couldn't believe it!! And getting off was the same, we picked our zone tags on our way to breakfast, listened for our floor to be called...it was the best on and off ever!! 2. The Ports - Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Turk are beautiful islands that have a ton of rich history!! 3. The dining room staff were super nice and helpful, but the kitchen was incredibly SLOW!! That's where the good ends and the BAD begins. The Bad: 1. The food was AWFUL!! The same flat iron steak that they served for dinner was served with the same nasty brown gravy-like substance in the morning for steak and eggs. The only good dinner night was lobster tail night and it was just ok. The buffet was filled with barely warm and edible food. The one highlight to the food was Guys Burger Bar...those burgers and hand cut fries were amazing but it's hard to do that 3 meals a day for 8 days. The guys at the pizza place made pizza very slow and there was always a loooong line made by the same 3 guys who looked like that HATED being there. 2. The boat has way to many passengers for the entertainment. We got in line for a comedy show in the limelight lounge 45 mins prior to the show and did not get a seat...its a tiny lounge for 3k people. 3. Serenity Deck (21 yrs and up only?)- This boat has 3 levels for the "serenity" of its passengers who are above 21 and don't want to hear screaming kids...perfect right? No, there was a consistent flow of young kids (from 2 - 14yrs old) hanging out. My wife and I got up and left because a family had there 5 years old on the serenity deck screaming and hollering during a movie. 4. There were loooong lines everywhere that we went, even trying to get back on the boat at ports with several hours before people had to be on, we never could figure out why they would only open 1 gangway and keep the lines forever long!!?? 5. Tons of underage drinking - I know that Carnival is known as the party boat but seriously! Parents were allowing their kids to take their sign and sail card up to the bar and order drinks because they had the bubbles sticker. No one was verifying that these people were of legal age to drink, as long as they had a card the drinks flowed which made for a very noticeable security team. I knew that the other boats we had been on had them but we hadn't seen them so prevalent as we did on this boat. 6. Outdoor activities - Many of the outdoor activities were closed due to "weather" which we never really understood, it didn't seem to matter if the seas were calm or rough or if it was windy or not...the sign was always up? Overall, this boat sucked. I will NEVER cruise on this boat again nor use Carnival. I tried to contact there Customer "Don't" Care department and they told me that "they'd check into it but often these are things of personal preference". I was highly disappointed in the trip on the sunshine and the after "care". Do yourself a favor...DON'T book on this boat!!! Read Less

If you like grazing on poor quality unlimited buffet, playing bingo and sweating over the next roll of a slot machine this might be the cruise for you. Or if you’re a teenage boy or young man who can’t get a girl and want to try your hand at stalking, this might be up your alley. Or you’re a 50-something who has burned out and is trying to pretend you’re still able to rock kicks like a 20-something give it a go. Otherwise take your money and look for a different cruise ship if that’s your bag. We chose this cruise because we normally drive around the US seeing sights and my wife has been on many cruises on Carnival when she was younger and felt like going on another. She had pleasant memories and felt like adding some more. We don’t travel too fancy, three and four star hotels being pretty much our standard. We eat in fine restaurants but we also like to snag street food sometimes and visit buffets when they look good. I have been on several European cruises in the past and never cared for cruises much; I have always felt that there was nothing to do. My wife assured me carnival was different. She said Carnival used to be a lot of fun. I figured worse case I sat around on a deck chair and would eat too much, so how bad could it be? My first shock was the food on Carnival sunshine. It was truly awful. Every evening meal comprised of old, reheated food that had sat under food lamps. If you ordered rare – medium rare meat you were taking your life into your hands. I learned quickly to order everything well done. There was also no variety to the evening meals. If you didn’t want the evening meal, there was a buffet that was like watching feeding time at a zoo. It was truly awful. I have eaten better food on ferry boats. The buffet was what one would expect of a buffet that had two stars on trip advisor. It was not good. The food always tasted old and you had to pick and choose according to what had just been brought out. They upped their game at the desert buffet, an old catering trick to make the food appear better quality than it was. There was a lack of seating at the buffet and your best bet of finding a table was to bus your own table. There was a burger bar called “Guy's burger joint”. The burgers always arrived well done and covered in sauces which made me nervous. After trying one I decided to steer clear of burgers for the rest of the trip. I considered ordering one medium rare but was too afraid after trying a well done burger. If you’re reading this Guy, try one of your own branded burgers and weep. There was a poorly run 24 hour pizza bar and the pizza was good, but often they only used the middle oven even at busy times so there was always a line. The biggest insult was the “Build you own pasta” and “deli” stations. The pasta was soggy overcooked, low grade pasta and the sandwiches reminded me of the packed lunches you get on a school trip. Perhaps Carnival sunshine was thinking of my health and wanted to help me to lose weight on their cruise? Or maybe they have no respect and think people will eat the garbage they serve and don’t understand anything if they were stupid enough to book Carnival in the first place? Either way, you’re looking at a gastronomic kicking when you step on board the ship. The next shock on Carnival sunshine was that there were only two swimming pools. Both were so full it was like sitting in human stew. Vile, vile, vile. There were also not enough deck chairs. A lot of deck space was taken up by bars no one sat at or cared to use. There other “pools” were whirl pools. They actually smelt like feet as you approached them. I found myself wondering if they scoop the water out of the whirl pools and use it to flavor the evening soup choice? Just before midday the “DJ” would clear out all the families from the pool on Carnival sunshine by playing music so loud people would scoop up their children and make a run for it. The only people dancing to the music were burned out old women with skin like parchment. Regardless, the “DJ” would boom out again and again “PAAaaaaary!” PAaaarty!”. I noticed many people on the deck chairs had wax ear plugs in their ears. I swore that when we got to the first Island, I would seek some out at the first pharmacy I could find, too. There was a water slide on Carnival sunshine. I tried it and it hurt my back. I spoke with several other passengers and they said the same thing. The children soon learned the painful price of the water slide and it became less busy as the cruise days went by. The service was good overall. The waiters, busboys, cabin cleaning crew etc. were always polite and looked embarrassed at times when arriving with what passed for food on the ship. I engaged them often in conversation and found them to be better bred and learned than the guest services desk staff that seemed to have been taken from an episode of “Eastenders” and propelled onto the Carnival sunshine. I felt like I was talking to a tea lady anytime I went to the guest services desk. The fitness center had poor air conditioning. Apart from that, it has some peeling tiles on the floor but away from the area where people worked out. It was pretty much like planet fitness but with better running and cycling machines. They had a good supply of towels in the fitness center and it was fit for purpose. There was very little to do on board. Your options were “Clue”, bingo or the slot machines. None of these were really appealing. I spent long hours in my cabin on non island days catching up on some work I had brought with me just in case. My wife spent much of the day asleep due to the boredom. The evening shows on Carnival Sunshine were thankfully short. I really couldn’t have taken more than 45 minutes of hits from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Many millennial’s looked like rabbits caught in the headlights of a car. They sat down, and their eyes grew wide as disco song after disco song blared out from the stage. The lucky ones escaped before the show got fully underway. I would whistle “The great escape” every time one fled past my seat. I stuck it out. I figure someone had to guard their rear as they retreated. I have no idea how “camp carnival” was on Carnival sunshine, but if the stairwells full of male teenagers prowling around late evening looking for girls was anything to go by, it was probably pretty grim. Parts of the ship in the evening were like hunting grounds for groups of teenagers and many teenage girls and full grown women required an escort. I myself was asked on three separate occasions to accompany women to their cabin door as they felt intimidated by the gangs prowling around at night. The women were truly afraid to travel to their cabins at night. I understand the cruise industry is under pressure to accept federal oversight if they want to dock in US ports. I think this can’t come a minute too soon. Finally there were the main bars. They reminded me of the sad and desperate bars that you find in resorts for 50 something singles. Lonely looking middle aged men and women desperately tried to engage younger travelers in conversation as they tried to seek company younger than themselves for the night. I noted that they never sought the company of those their own age. I suppose that would have bee too much like looking in the mirror. Try elsewhere. You deserve better than Carnival sunshine. You really do. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary of Aruba and Curaçao and also because the number of sea days. I will never again sail on the Sunshine and I’m leaning towards never sailing Carnival again. This was my 7th Carnival cruise, and it seems like they are charging more and providing less of the special service that the used to provide, and that hooked us on cruising. We had early dining and in two occasions waited 45 minutes for appetizers, while everyone around us already had dessert. We missed several functions because of the slow service. The ship was to crowded for the space available. Couldn’t find lounge chairs during the day nor seating at night for comedy shows. The condition of our cabin was disgusting. Bar service while playing slots was almost non existent. We paid almost $5000 for two cabins and came home miserable. Worst vacation ever. Read Less
