Our family of eight (3 generations) traveled with AmaWaterways from Nuremberg to Budapest, visiting Christmas markets in Germany, Austria and Hungary along the way. Embarkation was quick and pleasant. We were greeted when we arrived and shown directly to our stateroom. Our luggage soon followed. After settling in we attended the Welcome Cocktail Party, safety briefing and dinner. The Ship: The public spaces include a large comfortable lounge with access to a small deck, two dining rooms, a large sundeck with a fitness track and pool, a fitness room and a massage & hair salon. An elevator provides access to all but the sun deck. Internet is available throughout. Dining: Incredible! Breakfast and lunch were primarily buffet, with several kitchen prepared options. Early risers could also get a light breakfast in the lounge. Dinners were gourmet, multi-course meals offering several options and often featuring regional specialties. We had 3 children in our party and the kitchen made a special effort to provide kid friendly food for them. Service: Excellent. The crew went out of their way to assure that our needs were met. Ports & Shore Excursions: As this was a Christmas Market cruise, most of the excursions included visiting Christmas markets at each port. A market highlight was at the Thurn und Taxis Castle in Regensburg. Each day's activities were offered for a variety of fitness and ability levels, from gentle walkers to hiking and bicycling. Most of the local guides were very knowledgeable, personable and spoke excellent English. My husband and I attended an optional Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna and really enjoyed it. We had a wide range of ages and interests in our party, which ranged from 10 years old to 72. We all had a wonderful time and were able to break apart and come back together with ease. (Grandma and Grandpa liked the "gentle walkers" group while the kids were more energetic!) Disembarkation was well organized. Although we were asked to vacate our cabins by 9 a.m., we were comfortable in the lobby until our transportation for the next leg of our journey arrived. Read Less

A friend chose this cruise based on the ports. I could not have been happier with the ship, tours, food, and service. Everything was well taken care of. The food never felt mass produced as it often does on a big ship. It felt like each meal was made specially for me. Our waiters (Agus and Constantine) and bartender (Carmen) made us feel like we were their only guests. There were 6 in my group - they asked our names, remembered, & we were each greeted by name all week. They remembered food & drink preferences also of course making us feel cared for. Our cruise manager (Talida) made sure that all odds & ends were taken care of seemingly all across the ship & land with no seemingly no time when she might sleep! It worked wonderfully to stop at ports right on towns where we could just walk on & off the ship without worrying about buses etc.. Excursions were well planned & we had no wait time - it left when they said it would leave. No lining up, no waiting around to be called. It was all just right. I would definitely go again on a similar cruise & choose AmaWaterways. Read Less

I have been travelling for over 25 years on ocean cruises, so I carefully selected AMA, it was the best experience I have ever had. The crew on this ship from the Captain down are the very best you could find 5 star every cruise member , the food is fantastic, the service is perfect, the cabins are beautiful when every crew member makes you feel special to them, you have a first class experience. AMA uses locally sourced wines unlike some other river cruiselines, so it is a more memorable experience to savour the lical offerings. We were very fortuneate to be able to take part in a Bridge tour, conducted by Adrian, very interesting how the ship addresses the locks and us managed from the bridge. The cabin layouts are really good, we had a French Balcony and an outside balcony. You have happy hour before dinner and wine and beer with lunch and dinner and sparkling wine with breakfast, what more could you want ! Read Less

My wife and I have done around 25 cruises. We have never had the level of service provided on this cruise. We spent a few nights in Prague before boarding the ship. Highly recommend doing this. Its a beautiful city. We also added days at the end in Budapest. Very nice cities. The tours that AmaWaterways provided in both cities were very helpful in orienting us to the city. Plus the tours had great local guides. The hotels were top notch on great locations. This ship was not crowded. Plenty of room on the deck, restaurant or lounge. Very relaxing. My wife and I went alone. So we sat with others to eat or relax. Even tho this is not normally my thing it worked very well on this trip. The included wine may have helped . Met a lot of great people from many places around the world. The food provided at lunch was local a number of times. German food when we were in Germany goulash in Hungary ETC. very good. Dinner was high end and very good. The service was great. Very accommodating and very well trained. The room was laid out well, the bath and shower was nice. and we had no issues. If you don't want to walk as far request a room towards the lounge area. You will save a few steps. The ports were really nice and the local guides were great. If you are comparing to other ships consider this fact. The tour guides were very good. The quiet vox listening device is in your cabin to use on tours. This is really nice because you can hear even when you stop to take photos. Kudos to Roxy, Carman, Pasquel and Christian. Only names I can remember. The entire staff was great. Our room 324 was made up perfect every time. We wanted for nothing. With Christian managing the cruise and PasqueI managing the house everything was just right.I could do a review on these 2 they are that good. I didn't even mention the nighttime light tour in Budapest. Oh my. Just book it. Read Less

We have river cruised twice previously (Rhine and Rhone) on another river cruise line and were just looking for a change. Our Travel Agent recommended AMAWaterways based on the excellent reviews and feedback she had received from previous clients. We trained from Frankfurt to Nuremburg and traveling in 1st class with large suitcases is no picnic, since there wasn't anywhere to store the larger suitcases. We arrived early on the AMACERTO and was actually greeted by the Captain, who arranged to have our suitcases taken onboard. We were ready to party, but unfortunately, we had to buy out own beverages (we expected beer or wine since it was lunch). Our party of four then bought five bottles of wine to get the week started. The cabin was ready early and our was in excellent shape ( with balcony on the 3rd deck). Our room was serviced at least twice a day and the AC worked great. Dining throughout the cruise was above expectations and the service was excellent. Entertainment was "not so good"..... piano player who had a tough time adjusting to a party group. Entertainment brought onboard was very good and we wish there would have been more than just two nights of them. The ports and tours were very good...… no complaints about anything. We enjoyed and appreciated the change to listen to the captain while in the bridge and cruising down the Danube. I would recommend AMA Waterways to anyone...… Read Less

We choose this ship for the itinerary , 14 days from Bucharest to Nuremberg. The ship was splendid and the staff was excellent especially the cruise managers ( Florentin and Boyan) and the purser and his assistant ( Nema and Nicholas). Only 17 people stayed for both cruises and we enjoyed both parts even if the weather was better the first week. All excursions were wonderful especially the imperial castle in Belgrade and the Tito memorial. Meeting the prince and princess of Serbia was certainly exceptional. The day in Bulgaria to Veliko Tarnovo was also wonderful , the typical lunch was excellent. The second week held less surprises probably because of issues with the locks ( we got a nice compensation/credit for this), a lot of buses ! The food was great but not adventurous enough in my opinion, mainly beef, a fish, and a vegetarian dish, but everything was tasty. I do not remember any enrichment activity as we had on Viking, it would have been interesting after dinner to have something to do when there was no shows. It was nice to offer different activity level but most people think that they are fit when they are not, what can we do....We will be back for sure !!! Read Less

We had a perfect family trip with AMA Waterways on the AMA Certo. We traveled with my 3 teenage daughters ages 18,16 and 15. Two of the girls shared cabin 109, my oldest had cabin 111 to herself (both category D) and my husband and I treated ourselves to a cabin with a French balcony 226, category C. The cabins are lovely, well decorated and with room to store all your necessities. The bathrooms are small but make efficient use of the space and have luxurious touches, like a rain shower and beautiful tile work. River cruising does attract an older clientele, however there was another family with younger children on our trip. I DO recommend this company and this trip for families. The ship had plenty of bikes, excursions for the more active crowd and a lovely pool. There was a small evening activity every night, but we only participated one or two nights as we were generally exhausted and fell asleep quickly. My family loved the dining experience. They treated us like royalty, always asked “where are the girls ?” if we arrived without them. The food choices were all excellent. Portions sizes were perfect for having a little bit of everything. We did not go hungry and my 15 year old said that she gained 4 pounds on board. Our trip was interrupted by an accident on the river (a barge got stuck in low water), which had river traffic backed up for miles. We only made it a little beyond Passau, Germany instead of our final destination of Nuremberg; so we had to take long bus rides to experience 2 days of excursions which wasn’t the best, but no fault of the AMA. The first stop was Bratislava, a beautiful town, where we hiked to the castle and then explored a local fair and locally made ice cream. Vienna was lovely, but we took the optional Schonbrunn Palace tour in the afternoon so we had to rush back to the ship and didn’t have a lot of time in Vienna. The girls loved Durnstein. We took the Apricots and Sweets tasking excursion which was lovely and then took a leisurely stroll back to the ship. Then my husband and I biked through the Wachau Valley while the girls sat in the sun on the boat. It was our favorite day. We also did the optional excursion to Salzburg. We thought Salzburg was beautiful but actually liked Regensburg (the next day’s excursion where we did another tastings tour) better. The tour of Nuremberg was an issue because of the river back up. To experience the tour you had to take a 3 hour bus ride (only because the boat never made it all the way to Nuremberg). My husband and 2 of my daughters went and enjoyed it, but mostly because some of the crew treated them to some entertainment after the tour. The crew was wonderful, the food was great. It’s an awesome way to see some parts of Europe. Plan on being flexible, the company has no control over weather or the river or other boat traffic. Yes take this trip or any other that AMA Waterays offers and BRING YOUR CHILDREN ! Read Less

I was part of an alumni group of 19 people who sailed together. The pre-cruise package in Prague was attended by all but two of our participants. That add-on was worth it and the quality of the Prague Intercontinental Hotel and Czech Republic tours was well worth it. The water level on the Danube was low so we were not able to embarkation was moved from Nuremberg to Vilshofen. The embarkation process was very well organized. Our cruise manager did a great job in organizing similar if not identical experiences. By Tuesday, we were back to a normal schedule. Dining (including wine and food) was top notch. I found the dining room staff to be very hospitable and the food (both from the buffet and from the menu) was delicious and offered enough assortments to keep the experience feeling fresh. Sign up for the optional Chef's Table experience -- we loved our dinner in the special dining room. The staff on the entire ship was excellent -- genuine smiles, great customer service, and a commitment to making sure that everyone had a top-notch experience. We chose this particular itinerary as a "Bucket List"/ retirement trip. We did a pre-cruise extension in Vienna and a post-cruise extension in Romania. Our cruise manager, Christian Abker, made sure every detail was taken care of perfectly. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The crew and staff were very professional, attentive and engaging. Our cabin was spacious, bright and very clean. The bathroom was also very clean and spacious. The food was generally excellent and our meal in the "The Chef's Table" was perfection! We met so many lovely fellow cruisers from around the USA and several other countries. There was a large group of hearing impaired people on this cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of them. We had several evenings of entertainment by local dancers/singers that added a wonderful authentic dimension to the trip. A good variety of on-shore excursions (although sometimes felt rushed). My favorite was the Bulgarian pastry and yogurt making excursion in a local family's home. We will definitely cruise with AmaWaterways again. Read Less

Have traveled on a few large ocean ships so wanted to try a riverboat for comparison. A friend asked me to join a group of 15 on this Danube adventure. I knew little about the countries on the route but was game to go along. We added 3 days prior and after week cruise in Bucharest and Budapest, respectively. The countries visited were pretty depressing as still suffering from communist control 30+ yrs ago. The worst was Bucharest. Filthy dirty, massage parlours everywhere. Had to skip a western port in Serbia and the one in Croatia so cannot comment on thise two. AMA said Danube water level too low due to drought in Germany and Hungary. As a compensation for this, they brought hungarian dancers to boat to dance for 45 minutes one night and provided a tour in Budapest. As a result, the only nice city we saw was Budapest..perhaps the two we missed would have shown a better transition from war torn, communist controlled towns to modern, clean Budapest. People raved about the food...i thought average as breakfast and lunch pretty much the same buffet choices every day. Soups were excellent. Dinner choices minimal, food presentation excellent. Always seemed rushed. No time to relax and chat as servers seemed extremely intent to get us in and out of dining room. Of all the international travels i have done, both by cruise and otherwise, i have zero interest in returning to this part of eastern Europe. Part of what i like about larger ships is the chance to meet others. Our trip only had 140 passengers, with 90 from one group so meeting others pretty nonexistent. Tour buses were nice, only one guide worth his salt, rest poor to pretty boring. Should i ever go on another river boat, would try different line than AMA. 50 on staff so both the hair dresser and massage woman also cleaned our room. They are completely overworked. Read Less

I booked my first Ama cruise because they offer bike tours for no additional fee. This year, they have added a fitness program on some ships and, hope to have instructors on all ships next year. The river cruise market is changing. Ama is expanding their programs to include more activity levels. They offer gentle, average and active walking speeds and bike tours. They also make the bikes available for individual rides. The other big positive for me is freedom. When I explained that I prefer to "do my own thing" they went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable. I said I didn't want a big meal in the evening and they brought a large dinner salad as an entree. Cheese and fruit were available on the buffet table so I could have my favourite - herb cheese, dates and olives - as an appetiser or dessert. All three of my cruises on Ama have had other singles onboard, a few multi-generational families and friends sharing a cabin. I also like the mix of nationalities. Passengers are not just Americans. Canada, Norway, Spain, Hong Kong are the countries I remember. Thru the end of September, they are running a special that includes airfare so check their website if you're considering booking. And, no I don't work for them. Read Less

This cruise exceeded all expectations. From the time we arrived, we were greeted with exceptional service from all of the friendly staff. We were amazed at how many of the staff addressed us by name within the first day of arrival. With so many guests, that was very flattering. Talida was a great cruise manager and kept us informed of happenings each day. The laundry service was fast and not too expensive. The food, OMG, what can we say to express how impressed we were. How they managed to serve everyone at a table at the same time with the right order was amazing. The beds in our cabin were so comfortable that the first night we slept right through breakfast the next morning - slept from 10PM to 10AM Luckily we didn't miss our Pecs Excursion. We really appreciated being able to choose the gentle walking tours and they even had a town train to take us around on one of the stops. The tour we enjoyed most was the Banitsa making one, with Pavel and Ramona's entertaining explanation of how to make it. I plan to try that recipe soon. Read Less

We had previously taken an AMA river cruise on the Rhine from Switzerland to Amsterdam and found it wonderful, so decided to take another the Danube. We were actually on the same ship, AMACerto which is very nice. We had a great crew. Our Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, the Captain and crew provided us with wonderful service, great cuisine, safety, and comfort on our stay. This wonderful group of people worked beyond expectation to ensure that all guests were treated with exceptional courtesy, professionalism, and service. Please understand that the crew had nothing to do with the problems we encountered, and in fact, did everything possible to help ensure that our onboard experience went as smoothly as possible. Our concern, is only with upper levels of AMA Waterways management and their lack of transparency about communicating river level problems. After being told, we did our own research to better understand the problem. It was extremely disappointing to read an article published in Travel Weekly dated August 1st (two months prior to our cruise) quoting the President of AMA that the river levels were known to be low and causing diversions from scheduled itineraries. Cruise guests weren’t made aware of these problems until just prior to our departure from Prague. The resulting low water levels allowed us only two days of actual cruising on the Danube. Our first cruising day on the river was from Vilshofen to Passau and Linz on October 9th. The second cruising day was from Linz to Melk and Vienna on October 10th. Once again, we weren’t notified about the low waters down-stream until we arrived in Vienna. This again would interrupt our expected final leg to Budapest. AMA management obviously knew of these problems at least two months prior to our cruise. Had we been aware of this in a timely fashion, we could have opted to either cancel or postpone our trip to a different time. Obviously, AMA management used the tactic of keeping cruising guests in the dark and “dropping the news” on everyone just prior to our planned departures, both in Prague and Vienna. This we feel was deceptive on the part of AMA Waterways management. Cruise guests were bussed from Prague via Pilzen to Vilshofen rather than Nuremberg. The two and a half hour stop in Pilzen was very marginal. We had hoped to visit the Pilzen brewery, but it was packed with Germans celebrating the last days of Oktoberfest which excluded AMA guests any opportunity to tour. Our out-of-pocket lunch stop allowed limited choices, and the only excursion options in Pilzen were a loud band in the square that was of no interest to AMA guests, and a beer garden that opened just as it was time to depart. The stop did, however, provide us with a bathroom break. Vilshofen was a very pleasant town. For those who desired to see Nuremberg, guests were required to take a long, tiring bus trip providing minimal time in the city, and then back to Vilshofen. The option of visiting Regensberg was the same issue with another long bus ride. We opted to take a shorter excursion for a walking tour through the charming village of Scharding. Our only highlight in Vienna was a very nice Strauss/Mozart concert, again paid out of pocket. The Vienna city tour was an overly fast and somewhat confusing bus excursion, after which, we were left on our own on a shopping street. On Saturday, October 13, we disembarked AMACerto in Vienna and were bussed to the Budapest Sofitel Chain Bridge Hotel. This bus trip was long and unfortunately without a pitstop. When we arrived at the hotel, there was a rudimentary reception for AMA guests with mediocre food and drinks. Immediately after, the AMA concierge team seemed to disappear and was unavailable to aid guests for the remainder of our stay or provide guidance about transportation to the airport. To complete our extra days in Budapest, we, and another AMA couple, arranged our own in-town excursions. We hired a driver and guide for a very nice city tour and arranged for an evening illumination cruise. Both of these were scheduled to occur as part of our cruise package that we didn’t receive. This was disappointing because we all incurred additional unplanned out-of-pocket expenses. After returning home, our travel agent, called us and forwarded AMA’s letter of apology, with an offer of credit on future cruises. This may seem generous on the part of AMA Waterways management, but it doesn’t help those of us who will not be considering future AMA cruises. Read Less

We just returned from our first River Cruise to the Christmas Markets, Vienna to Nuremberg and because of the low water conditions could not do the published program, or even their plan B. However or cruise manager, Agnes Riley, made sure that we had a vacation to remember. We still visited cities in Eastern Europe that we had never seen and saw five countries instead of the three we thought we were going to. Travel is an adventure and Ama made sure that this was one we will remember. The ship was decked out for the Christmas season, the staff was excellent and the food great. We booked the Prague extension and travel from the ship to the hotel went without a flaw. The hotel was walking distance to old town and the market and was first class all the way. I was pleasantly surprised to get an email from my travel agent yesterday informing us that because of the changes that had to be made we were receiving a very generous credit for a future cruise good through 2021. Again I must say "AmaWaterways is a class act." and they will be our first choice for our next River Cruise. Read Less

We chose the Magical Christmas markets to see Vienna, Salzburg, and Nürnberg, to enjoy some Christkindlmarkts, and to acquaint ourselves with river cruising. Ama has work to do. The cruise administration as we approached our travel date was disrupted by the Woolsey Fire in the San Fernando Valley, where Ama is headquartered. Ama needs better contingency plans if they are going to stay in the Valley. Fires in Calabasas, from my youth in Woodland Hills, are NOT uncommon. We were impacted by the water levels of the Danube. Our cruise was shortened from Nürnberg to Vilshofen, and, after we boarded, to Passau. We missed one of the best Christkindlmarkts in all Europe. I recognize Ama is a hotelier, a restaraunteur, and a ship line, but they need better decisionmaking on how to make the traveller's experience the best possible. That includes leaving ship if need be. The sailing plan? OMW. On Monday, for reasons known only to Ama, we left Vienna for Tulin. Guess what? Everything was closed. DUMB. Then, at 11 at night, we sailed back to Vienna to berth in the nest of ships again. Better to have spent another day in Vienna, and help us see more of that great city. Speaking of bad calls, let's talk about Sunday. There were three ships abreast at Handelskai that morning. Three sets of busses, and no one on shore to direct us to which group of busses. We showed our color coded ticket, and the guide said "This is your bus." Welllllll .... no it wasn't. It was the bus of another ship to Bratislava. You need passports for that tour. Turned out a third of the people on that bus were from our ship, misdirected to it instead of the bus for the Eisenstadt tour. It's late fall, early winter. It was raining most days, so the upper outdoor deck was unusable. The lounge was a hospitable place, with free coffee and tea at all hours. I discuss our cabin elsewhere. The dining? Superb. An advantage Ama has over Windstar and their ocean sailings is the free wine and beer at mealtime. I liked that! Service? Superb. Yes, I paid the expected crew's gratuity, and then some, but I also gave some to my cabin housekeeper and two of the waiters. They deserved it. Vienna and Salzburg are grand cities, worthy of much more time than the cruise could provide. We will be back. Overall, this COULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE BUBBLE CRUISE. The administrative and logistics decision cost it points. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the reputation of the company, the destinations (Danube and Christmas Markets) and for the romantic time of year. We were welcomed with champagne and a toast by our Captain. We met our outstanding Cruise Director, Sebastian Leroy, and the fun began! Sebastian is professional, considerate, attentive to detail, hardworking, and funny! Our ship was clean, lovely, and welcoming. It was easy to get around the ship and enjoy the different amenities. The crew were warm and friendly. They made you feel like you are special, even though you know that six hours ago they said "goodbye" to the last ship full of guests. I did not bring work out clothes so missed the excellent fitness classes (stretch, core, balance were all held indoors due to cold weather) so learn from my mistake and take work out clothes. Laundry facilities are excellent (no dry cleaning) with a 24 hour turn around. For dining, we enjoyed local specialties at each port and there was always a selection of favorites (steak, chicken, cheeseburgers) for those who did not want the local cuisine. Buffets for breakfast and lunch were lavish with lots of options. Beware those who are trying to cut carbs: this is going to be difficult! The breads, cinnamon rolls and desserts are very tempting! (And worth every bite...you'll walk it off!) Service was excellent and the wait staff quickly learns your preferences. Shore excursions were well thought out+ and local guides provided insights that helped you understand the cultural differences of the county you were visiting. A big thank you to the Cruise Director and Captain that scrambled to adapt our itinerary to accommodate the low water levels of the Danube. They more than made up one missed port with additional destinations that met and exceeded our expectations. I know our Cruise Director had to work extra hard to schedule buses and guides to adapt our schedule. Disembarkation was a masterful plan that was well organized by Sebastian. We were impressed with his attention to detail. As busy as it was he saw every guest off to their taxi, or bus. A warm hug and/or handshake sent us on our way to our next adventure. In summary, I highly recommend AMA Waterways and the Magical Christmas Markets adventure! Read Less

We have had the Danube on our bucket list for quite a while. We chose the Magical Christmas Markets cruise because we knew our son--currently in graduate school--would be available between academic semesters to join us. Although we were excited about the trip and expected to see many wonderful sights, everything about our AMA Waterways experience exceeded our expectations. Every single meal--breakfast, lunch and dinner--was a five-star experience. But that's not to say it was stuffy or pretentious. It's just that the chef, baker, waiters, and other employers were amazing. There were always multiple options--eat a so-called "light" meal in the lounge upstairs, but the choices laid out were the types of hors d'oeuvres and finger food you might expect to find at an expensive wedding reception, plus assorted fruits, breads, and desserts. Meanwhile, in the main dining room, we could always choose to order off the menu or select items from a more extensive buffet. Or both, by which I mean that our waiters were quite fine with us mixing and matching anything we wanted. There was always a special table filled with a variety of fresh breads from the bakery chef, with desserts added to supplement what was featured on the menu. Local specialties were highlighted, as were local wines and beers. Our staterooms were clean and convenient. Towels were thick and spotless. Our housekeeper was friendly and honest to a fault. For example, we threw away an old pair of gloves that were falling apart. (We had found a new pair at a Christmas market and wanted to save space in our luggage.) The next morning, when she saw us in the hall, she expressed concern that if we were missing a pair of gloves, she had found a pair in the garbage. In fact, everyone on the AMACerto seemed to be concerned about our happiness and welfare. There were choices of tours at every stop--a "gentle" tour, a regular tour, a strenuous hike, and bicycle options. Bus tours to Salzburg, Melk Abbey, and other nearby sites were available, all most all of which were included in the price. Before, during, and after these tours, heads were carefully counted to ensure that nobody got lost. When it came time to settle the bill, everything was exactly as I had expected it to be. I could go on, but you get the point. Read Less

I had always been curious about river cruising, but had been reluctant to commit. However, this particular cruise up the Danube was too good to refuse, and I am so glad I did it. The initial draw was that the entertainment on board would be the Alan Doyle Trio; my friends and I are big fans, and the chance to see 4 shows in one week and to interact with them on shore excursions and on the boat was once in a lifetime. Turns out that the vast majority of the passengers were of like mind: ready to have fun and connect with new people. From the first notes of the first show, we were all fast friends. And, even the passengers who had booked the trip independently quickly became fans and were really happy they had chosen this particular trip. Every element of this cruise was top notch. Embarkation was so easy, and the crew made me feel like I was coming home right from the beginning. Every need I had was met almost before I even asked. From housekeeping (wonderful Stephanie who cleaned and set up my room at least twice a day) to the bartender Misha who seemed to be always working (I don't know when she slept), and always with a smile on her face no matter what time of the day or night, to Roman the Wellness Director, who took the time to get to know me and my physical limitations and develop a program for me while on the boat. Our cruise manager was unbelievable. I think he must have had a "time turner", like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, because he was literally everywhere all day, making sure shore excursions were going as planned, that everybody was safe and accounted for, and that we all had the information we needed to make our daily activity decisions. The ship was terrific. Plenty of room for finding moments of privacy, and great spaces for hanging with people. The thoughtful touch of having blankets available on deck for those cool days allowed us all to be outside as much as we wanted to. The fitness room had a treadmill that was non-functional for our cruise which was a disappointment to some of the passengers, but there were plenty of opportunities for vigorous training on the bike or rower, we well as on land if desired. The food was incredible; the dining room was lovely, and the servers were fantastic. There was no assigned seating, which allowed us to sit with a whole variety of different folks over the week. We made so many friends, and it was wonderful to share our day and our adventures with these new friends. The food ranged from multicourse meals with flexible options to a light breakfast in the lounge. You could have whatever you wanted, and mix and match from the menu or the buffet or the preparation station. And, if you didn't like that, you could order a burger or any number of routine options. The menu included local specialties at every country. I particularly liked the late night snack, for which I was always ready. The shore excursions were plentiful and varied; each day offered a terrific journey at any number of levels, from intensive biking to "gentle walkers" for those with mobility challenges. We primarily did the regular walking tours, and were impressed by the local tour guides on every one. I learned so much, and then had plenty of time for independent exploration. The entire week was low key and no-pressure. You could really do whatever you wanted on any given day. I am definitely planning to do a river cruise again, and will not travel with anyone other than AMA Waterways. Read Less

This was our first River cruise. The Maitre D, Nicolette, on board the Prague to Budapest route was phenomenal. She bent over backwards to review menus daily with me, and my husband who is vegan. Every moment ran smoothly on the ship including embarking/disembarking, tours, and meal schedules. The AMAcerto ship cabins are immaculate. Breakfast and lunch buffet choices are plentiful and fresh daily. Dinner entrees are artfully presented when you order from the menu. On-shore tours allow for all levels of physical ability. There were no glitches or disappointments except for a tour in Vienna in which the guide was not very well-informed about local history. We are experienced travelers who have hiked, driven, and gone by train throughout Europe. However, AMA waterways is perhaps the very best way to experience the Danube because included in the price are amazing tours of gothic churches, castles, Abbeys, medieval villages, and a Vienna concert as well. There is perhaps not enough time to explore a city on your own, hence you may want to stay for more days at the end of your trip in Budapest. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, or cruise of any kind, and we picked AMA based on a review of various materials that reviewed cruise lines. The cruise was easy to book through a travel agent. The embarkation was smooth , the disembarkation was well handled and included transportation from the ship to the airport. The price would have included free airfare had we wanted to fly to coincide with the ship's day of depature, But since we wanted to spend a few days in Europe prior to sailing, we had to have that booked separately, but we were given an airfare that was very inexpensive for the route taken. The ship was beautiful . Our room was surprisingly spacious at 230 sq. ft. and had both French and outside balconies. The bathroom was large with a great rain shower, thick, comfortable towels and high quality grooming products. It was serviced twice every day by a professional, conscientious, helpful, abd friendly staff. The food service could not have been better. The breakfast and lunch were buffet, although there were always choices available to be served from the kitchen. The dinners were four courses with several options, including vegetarian and gluten free. The wines were high quality (and free flowing).. The waitstaff was attentive to every need. Cocktails were available for free for an hour before dinner, but also available all day long. there were also early risers' breakfast t available later in the morning. Lunch was also available as just soup and sandwich in the ship's lounge. In addition, every person had access to a special dinner at the Chef's Table dining room one night during the cuise. As for activities, there was stretching and Yoga every day and other fitness activities available throughout the day. Bicycles were available all the time and there were scheduled bike trips as shore excursions. There were also several strenuous hikes. And the standard city tours had both active and less active itineraries so every person had access to a pace with which they could be comfortable. The staff was wonderful from captain on down . The cruise director was tireless in her efforts to insure that all was perfect and did her job with boundless energy and humor. In short, we would gladly sail with AMA Wayerways again and give them our highest recommendation. Read Less

We have cruised the the Danube many times and this was our second time with AMA on this particular section, but with some different stops than our previous cruise which was a 'Wine Cruise'. We had chosen cabin 203 on the Cello deck [middle] which has the unique AMA double balcony design with an open balcony for good weather and a 'French balcony' when the weather is not so pleasant. This is our prefered level and position when River Cruising, towards the front to avoid engine noise when overnight sailing and middle to avoid noise from overhead from either crew or passengers walking about. New for this year AMA have a full time fitness instructor onboard giving a variety of exercises to suite all levels and even those with disabilities and the Instructor Romen set the instruction to suite the guest. These group instruction was part of the package, but Romen was also available for individual instruction at a fee charged per hour. Another new for this year was free Cocktail hour every evening generally around 5-6pm but could vary depending on excursion times. Every day there were multiple included excursions to suite all levels of physical ability including cycling & hikes. Our two most enjoyable tours were to 'Cesky Krumlov' which is a fascinating pedestrianised small town which has Bohemia's largest castle. Our other favorite stop was Bratislava with its amazing 'Old Town'. Durnstein is always a favorite stop and on this occasion we opted for the Apricot tasting tour where apart from the general tour of the village we got a private tasting with a producer of Apricot Brandy's and liqueurs, some of his chocolate products and his world famous 'Rabbit S--t' ( it only looks like that and is infact a roasted nut coated in chocolate) and it tastes great. Food and drink every day was great with good service from all the staff with local delicacies being served every night with complimentary 'Paired' wines and we found that the wine staff thought that a half empty glass was offensive to the eye and would keep topping it up till you collapse or placed a napkin over the glass. Ship and cabins were kept 'Squeaky Clean' by a great crew. We used the 'Pool' one afternoon while cruising and it was very pleasant in the heated water and screaning from the wind. Overall a very enjoyable cruise and we met many people who have now become friends, mostly from North America, but a few from Israel, Cuba, Australia and Hawaii, we were the only people from the UK. The reason I have not given the cruise an 'excellent' was that we and others found some of the local 'Guides' were not particularly great [We fed this back to the cruise manager who assured us it would be dealt with and the Tour Bus in Bratislava was not suitable for the less able guests. We chose this trip for our 39th Wedding Anniversary and the wish to experience a river cruise on the Danube. The Romantic Danube itinerary seemed to catch our eye and booked this cruise with the 2 night Hotel option in Munich Germany. After clearing customs/immigration, we exited the baggage hall and were met by our AmaWaterway transfer driver. He whisked us away to our Hotel located in the heart of "old" Munich and easy walking distances to any restaurants, market plaza's and old cathedrals. The Hotel room was ready upon arrival and the staff took good care of us. There was a very helpful AmaWaterways representative in the Hotel Lobby who gave us information related to our stay, the included walking tour and departure time to meet the ship at Vilshofen. The Hotel was wonderful, the local tour guide Annette gave our group a wonderful tour full of history and background of the area. The Sunday departure to meet the ship was flawless. It left on time, picked up additional passengers at the airport and arrived at the ship safely and on time. The embarkation to the AmaCerto was smooth, we were welcomed aboard by the tour manager Camille, reception had everything organized well our cabin was ready, luggage in room and times for some important briefings and safety demonstrations. The cabin we picked was nicely appointed, clean and comfortable. The washroom/shower was very adequate for our needs. We had a balcony and French balcony in our cabin. We used our balcony quite a bit. The food was fantastic, service was friendly and spot on and we really liked the open seating policy. The cruise manager arranged a host of talented singers, musicians and folk dancers for the evening entertainment. There were various fitness activities each day put on by the Wellness Coordinator. Camille had all the shore excursions organized, offered different fitness levels and had good local guides. All the excursions we attended went smoothly and added a lot of depth to the cruise. Final disembarkation to the airport was well organized and went smoothly. It was sad to leave as we had a excellent time, met many interesting people. We would definitely do this again!. Read Less

We chose this cruise on the recommendation of our travel agent. He is well traveled and told us this line was the best. We have been on many ocean cruises but the river cruise is better. We loved every moment. The staff is amazing. Our favorite bartender was Misha. We loved seeing her every day. She was always smiling and kept us smiling too. Nothing is too much to ask. The food is gourmet at every meal and again the staff makes every meal memorable. The cruise director was everywhere. I don’t remember any cruise director from other cruises but Florentin is in forgettable. He made sure everything was perfect. I had the best massage ever thanks to Rumena who was wonderful. Each port of entry had at least thee choices and we enjoyed each place. The weather was terrible but we still had a great time. We would choose this line again. Read Less
