This is an excellent trip for a Civil War buff as well as anyone interested in small town south. People and crew were lovely and the crew was most accommodating. Vista St. Louis, Paducah, KY. Clarksville, Nashville and other Civil War sites in Tennessee and Kentucky. Highlight was Nashville with the music on Broadway and the Grand Ole Opry. Meeting people from all over America and getting to know the different cruises they have taken. These people are the best references for selecting your next adventure. The food is outstanding, without overdoing it. The portions are just enough and you can choose what you want to eat at all meals. The liquor is top shelf with no off brands. The beer is locally brewed which adds to the adventure. Friendly service throughout with every crew member always smiling and willing to help if necessary. I highly recommend this trip or any other by this company as previous travelers with this company had nothing but high praise for it. Having gone on river cruises in Europe, this company is outstanding. Read Less

I was travelling with a travel group out of Hewitt, TX My friend and I travel quite a bit and are always looking for something different. When this opportunity became available we were very excited. We have been on several ocean cruises but had never been on a river cruise. The rooms were very nice and our gal assigned to our room did an excellent job of taking care of us! The food was excellent both in the dining room and the front porch. I celebrated my birthday on board and the waiter did a great job surprising me. The entertainment was fun to watch and was varied. Everyone was so personable. We just really felt like we were part of the family. Our only disappointment was that when we went to buy one of your sweatshirts you didn't have any mediums left in navy. I have called the company to see if we can purchase them on line. I will have to say this was the most relaxing vacation we have taken! Read Less

Traveled with 86 year old Mother in law, Sister in law, her husband and my husband. Fantastic cruise! So relaxing and comfortable. You want for nothing on this ship! Beautifully appointed Staterooms and each room offers a nice sized balcony and beautiful view of the River. Interesting Ports of call. Learned so much about Mark Twain and the history of the Mississippi River. Met so many interesting and wonderful people! Very courteous and friendly staff. Meals were a culinary delight! Had breakfast delivered to room each morning so we could enjoy coffee on the balcony watching the world go by! Cocktail hour was always fun with delicious hor d'oeuvres and lively conversation. Jim was our Riverorian/Naturalist on board. He gave such interesting talks covering the history of the Mississippi River, the local environment and wildlife. My favorite was the Seminar on the Monarch Butterfly and also Bald Eagles. Was exciting to see so many Bald Eagles on the trip! Richard Geary (aka Mark Twain) was also entertaining and added so much to the trip! Read Less

We have not done cruised this river before. It is not offered that often and we just wanted to see some of the cities and sites on the itinerary. We had a hotel included for the night before we boarded the ship, the Queen of the Mississippi Paddle-Wheeler, in St. Louis and traveled to Pittsburgh. The embarkation was handled smoothly and so was the disembarking. If you have never gone through the locks on a large river, it is an interesting experience. We toured the Trail of Tears Museum in Cape Giradeau, MO. Very well done. The highlight for us was to tour Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. There were 2 tours offered in Cincinnati and both were interesting. The service on the ship was excellent. Food is very good and one has the option to choose 1/2 portion of each meal. Be warned,,,desserts are outstanding! Each of the lounges has coffee, tea, juices, sodas, water and snacks available at all times. Read Less

We've always wanted to cruise the full length of the Ohio River and this cruise was a wonderful opportunity to do so. The ship is small enough to get to know passengers and very comfortable. Built specifically for American Cruise Lines, the cabins are generous in size and well designed. Food was excellent. We appreciated the option of half-sized portions of the main course at noon and evening meals. Our riverlorians were quite knowledgeable and presented appropriate and informative talks. A surprise hatch of mayflies became an occasion for a presentation on the many aspects of this interesting species. The tours were well-organized with good choices but the option of just relaxing on the boat was also very welcome. My husband moves slowly and with some difficulty. He had no trouble getting around. All the excursions were able to accommodate even someone in a wheelchair. Deckhands were always available to assist when we left and reboarded the boat. Read Less

We wanted to stay in the US this year for vacation and since we had not visited the states where the ship docked, we felt this would be a good fit. We are also interested in the Civil War and we thought that would make the cruise more interesting for us. The cruise was expensive, but we hoped it would be "top shelf" making it worth the money spent. There were no transfers offered from the airport to the hotel, but it was easy enough to ride Uber. We were disappointed, however, that the hotel chosen by the cruise line was in the suburban part of the city rather than the downtown where we could have walked around, visited museums, etc. Breakfast at the hotel was not included, but transportation to the boat the following day was. We were quite surprised when we boarded the ship and saw how worn out it looked. The décor was disappointing and the furniture dirty (especially dining room chairs), not comfortable), and basically needing to be replaced. The carpets looked like they needed a good cleaning. We were shocked to learn the ship is only 2 years old. It has not been well maintained. The food was good to mediocre, leaning more towards mediocre. We were never offered second helpings and, more often than not, reminded we could order "half" portions. Lunches always were made from leftovers of the dinner the night before. Selections were limited but, most disappointing, the food just wasn't very good in both taste and presentation. We enjoyed the Civil War lecturer but the "riverlorians" (never heard that word till this cruise) were a bit hokey. The entertainment was geared toward the older senior citizens and was not often well attended except for those that wanted to take advantage of the open bar. There was no wine selection. They only served Mondavi's Woodbridge wine which I do not think of as good quality. When I asked if I could have different wines, I was told there would be an upcharge to do so. Meanwhile, the bar was well stocked with good hard liquors which made the lack of wine choices all the more perplexing. The ports of call were good and all of the tours excellent. I also must comment that the ship's staff was attentive, friendly, and professional. Disembarking was really poor. We had paid for a tour of New Orleans and then transportation and drop off downtown. We arrived to board the bus 15 minutes early and were told there were no more seats. The explanation was, "someone must be on wrong bus." We were eventually placed on another bus (the one going to the airport) and did get a tour of the city. This is one time, however, when the tour guide wasn't very good or professional. I really went into this cruise with high hopes of doing more trips with this company but I most certainly will not after my first encounter. It is truly a niche market and I hope that other lines will join the market and offer more quality trips on the US rivers. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise within the US and upon discovering the Civil War themed cruise on the Mississippi, hoped this would be informative and fun. It was even better than we had hoped. Only about 140 people on board so we truly met almost everyone. Our cabin was larger than expected and quite comfortable. Great food, excellent cruise staff and very good historians and people with river knowledge on board. We actually learned a lot about the river and history of the War Between the States. We especially enjoyed the cocktail hour conversations with the historian and the well planned shore excursions. Nearly all of the excursions we went on were included in our cruise price. The included pre-cruise accommodations and transportation was also quite good with an unexpected city tour before boarding our ship in Memphis. We've already booked our next adventure with this cruse line! Read Less

The room were always clean and the service was excellent. I have never ate so much in my life.Food and drinks were excellent. The tour guide at each site were very helpful and each knew a little bit of info about the site that was different from what you normally would hear. Overall I would rate the trip as an excellent experience and highly recommend it to anyone looking to do that trip.Make sure you take a pair of bigger pants. The Mississippi is a beautiful river and the sights and scenery is amazing and it is all right here in the USA. I liked the fact I did not have to leave the USA and still have an excellent trip. I hope to someday do the Colombia and Snake river trip. Read Less

We went from Memphis to New Orleans on the Mississippi River. WOW! We were very impressed with the ship and the service. They cater to your needs and with the ship only holding 150 passengers, they can REALLY cater to you. We felt coddled and well taken care of. The food was out of this world...picked up locally grown and produced goods at every stop. The excursions were included in the price for the most part and were interesting and relevant to the stops we made. A five star trip everyone should take! Our waitress knew our likes and dislikes after the second day and had the wine we liked waiting for us at dinner and our tea, coffee, soft drinks at our table as soon as we sat down. She made suggestions on items we could get when there was something on a plate she knew we wouldn’t/couldn’t eat. We are already planning our next River cruise with this company. Read Less

I just returned from a wonderful cruise onboard ACL's Queen of the Mississippi. We sailed from New Orleans to Memphis and were blessed with outstanding weather for 6 of the 7 days. I was travelling with my dad and was about 30 years younger than all of the passengers, but I still had a great time. This is a VERY relaxing cruise- there are no nightclubs or casinos and the evening show ends around 9pm. I found this to be a nice change of pace from every other cruise I have been on; I loved sitting on the top deck with a glass of wine and a book and watching the world pass by. Our balcony cabin was much larger than I expected and the bathroom was huge. The bathroom was stocked with lots of nice amenities, which were replenished daily. There was a Keurig coffee maker in the cabin, which was a nice touch. The balcony was a good size and there was plenty of storage in the cabin. Our cabin was 315, which was right next to the stairs, but I didn't hear any noise throughout the cruise. Food: I usually cruise on luxury lines and have been spoiled by the food on Crystal, however, ACL didn't disappoint. I thought the food was very tasty; it is regionally inspired, so we saw a lot of Cajun offerings. My dad isn't a big fan of Cajun food, so he could request something else, like a cheeseburger, and the chef would prepare it for him. They were very accommodating with special requests and dietary needs. Wine and beer flowed freely at lunch a dinner. Cocktail hour was from 5:30-6:30pm each night in the main lounge. This was a fun way to get to know the other passengers and talk about what went on during the day. During this hour, it was an open bar and our cruise kept the bartenders very busy. :) Tours: I did the city tours in Baton Rouge and Memphis and my dad did the military tour in Vicksburg. We thought the tours were well planned out and everyone seemed to enjoy them. Service: The service onboard was great. Captain Robert Hopkins was very friendly and interacted well with the passengers. Patrick, the Hotel Director was awesome, as was Christopher, who was training. The Cruise Staff were all very friendly and did a great job. DeMarus, in Housekeeping, was also the bartender at night and kept my glass full and remembered that my dad liked 2 cherries in his drink. Entertainment: Honestly, I was surprised at how good the entertainment was. I think most cruise ship entertainment is cheesy, but these were mostly local artists and whoever found them did a great job. The comedian was hilarious and the musical acts were very entertaining. All in all, this was a great trip and one that I will remember with my dad for a lifetime. Read Less
