This is the perfect way to tour multiple cities in Europe without having to pack and unpack at different hotels. Every meal is included in the price. Great scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley and the Danube Narrows. Budapest and Vienna were great. Some excursions were too strenuous for persons with walking difficulty, especially Salzburg where a long hike across town was required for some reason, and the guide just kept going on ahead and out of sight. Also, most of that excursion time was spent on a long bus ride. Other excursions were okay. There were many older people and persons with physical disabilities and the excursions required more ability than many of the people on the ship were capable of. Some accommodation was made, but not always. Staff on the ship were very helpful, and entertaining. Room maintenance was excellent. There was very little expense on the ship. It was fun watching the ship go through the locks on the Rhine Main canal. Language was never a problem during any part of the cruise and excursions. Read Less

Visiting Parts of Europe that i had not visited before sounded very exciting. Unfortunately the cruise up the Danube was not as enjoyable as i had hoped. The food and service on the Freya was excellent, but the view from the boat at some of the stops was disappointing. For example at one of the stops the view from our cabin was a concrete batching plant. Other stops were usually not up to the standard of the first night in Budapest, meaning we usually stopped some distance from the town or city and needed to take a taxi to go into town. Even then the stops were for a short time as the boat was to be moved within a few hours. I also thought that Viking should describe the distance of walks from the bus that picked us up at the boat to the attraction that was the destination in more explicit words. For example, a walking tour described as moderate means different things to different people depending on that persons fitness level. Viking would do better if it said 1/4 of a mile instead of moderate walk for example. One of our tour guides was so engrossed with describing the tour details that i had to interrupt his dialog to point out that an elderly lady in our group was so far behind the group that we had to wait some time before she caught up. I had plans to visit a restaurant in Regensburg with friends for dinner and before that visit the BMW factory. Unfortunately i was told by staff that the boat would be leaving port in the afternoon so I cancelled the BMW factory tour and had lunch in Regensburg. Viking refused to reimburse me for the BMW tour. I could point out other things that Viking could improve but i am tired, I left a similar review while onboard I would be surprised if Viking ever contacted me to follow up my review. All in all a pleasant experience but not worth the money I paid. Read Less

This was my first experience with any kind of cruise and first visit to Europe. The prior experiences of a friend who had been on 4 of these river cruises with Viking was the main reason I booked this once-in-a-lifetime trip with my sister. I felt the Viking organization in all facets to be excellent: the ship and its crew, the dining, the land excursions including city tours were interesting and the knowledgeable local guides were professional and in most cases quite entertaining as well. While under sail, it was only by looking out of the windows that you would know the ship was moving. Our fellow passengers were lovely people and because there were only 188 of us, it was a more intimate journey. There was no assigned seating for meals and people just gravitated towards the ones they would spend the most time with. I particularly enjoyed the history of the cities we visited: Budapest, Hungary; Vienna, Austria; Krems, Austria; Passau, Regensburg and Nuremburg, Germany. I only wish there had been more time in Nuremburg, but I was delighted with all aspects of the land excursions. Also enjoyable were the Hungarian Tea and Austrian Tea (which included an apple strudel demonstration and tasting) and the Taste of Austria evening - what fun we had! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of our general interest in central Europe and boy did we see a lot of it! The sunset harbor cruise in Budapest was a fantastic way to get started. The city is just stunning when seen from the river at night. The lights on all of the buildings and bridges were magical. The cruise itself was great. Both the food and the way everything was organized were astonishing. River conditions were difficult due to high water but the cruise director always had a plan for a great day each day. The buses to take us to our tours were always there on time. The tour guides had the right knowledge and equipment to give us an interesting tour. And, there was enough free time for us to wander and explore each of those unique and interesting cities on our own. My favorite day was in Regensberg. The old city was a delight and the organ concert in the cathedral was a highlight of the trip. Read Less

I had been wanting to go to Europe for a long time and when my in-laws asked me if I wanted to go on a river cruise with them I didn't hesitate. The staff from Viking Freya meet us at the airport and transported us to the ship in time for lunch. The ship was very nice and the public places, especially the lounge were comfortable. I liked the Aquavit Terrace and the upper deck with the shuffle board, mini gold and chess game. The staff was very friendly and helpful, excellent service. The food was superb, I particularly enjoyed breakfast with the omelet station and the pastries. Lunch and dinner were also very good. We were given detailed information by the program director of the next day activities and a itinerary was left in our room every evening. The included shore excursions were well organized and interesting. The tour guides were friendly and took the time to answer questions. The highlights on board the ship for me were the taste of Austria dinner and entertainment and the Apple Strudel and Kaiseschmaren demonstrations. Our cabin, although a bit small, was very comfortable with ample storage and a fridge to store the goodies we had bought on the sightseeing tours. I would definetly go again. Read Less

My wife and I wanted to try a river cruise. We have visited Paris a few times and we wanted to be able to visit a few different European cities and countries in one trip. We booked a cruise on the Viking Freya from Budapest to Nuremberg. This was a memorable trip. The cabin was clean and comfortable. The dining was outstanding (5 stars); they were able to accommodate our different diets and allergies. The staff and service were first rate (5*). Special kudos to the chef, maitre d', and the wait staff, who took care of all of our needs. The shore excursions were entertaining and informative, and we were able to wander around on our own in a few of the cities. The relaxed and intimate atmosphere on the ship enabled us to meet some great people who we now consider our friends. We are now deciding on where to go next year on Viking. Read Less

Danube River cruise was on our bucket list. Viking made it a fantastic experience. Every excursion was new and informative. The service was outstanding. We loved the tour director and his daily talks. I can't say enough of how great our time aboard the Viking Freye. We had paid for a lower cabin level but we were upgraded to a higher level. It was a pleasant surprise but we would have been just as happy with the room that we had booked. The food was gourmet with a great variety. Although the ship was small, we had plenty of space and things to do onboard. The scenery was unbelievable. Everyone we met on board was pleasant and we met so many people from so many different places from around the world. The crew was happy and treated everyone with respect. I know that Viking lived up to its reputation and we will sail with them again. Read Less

We enjoyed our first cruise with Viking so much we wanted to another one and this had places we wanted to see. We like the idea of unpacking once but getting to see many different cities and countries. The excursions are informative and well planned. Every meal on board was delicious and the service wonderful. All the staff were curtious and helpful. I like that we could choose a less expensive room and everyone was treated the same, we weren't made to feel less, and we really didn't spend much time in our room as there was so much to see on the river and so many wonderful people to meet. I was a litttle disappointed not to have L'occitaine products on board as we did on our first cruise, the Freya products were nice but didn't feel as pampered. It was nice having the bottled water and use of umbrellas on our excursions. And the coffee bar is a nice treat too. Can't wait to do another cruise with Viking. Read Less

This was our first River cruise. We started with a stay in Prague for a few days prior to our cruise. It was wonderful. The cruise concierge was so helpful and offered suggested tours of the beautiful city. Viking takes care of your every need. We boarded our ship at Nuremburg and took a tour of the city with an emphasis on WWII and the trials. The cruise itself was fabulous. Beautiful ports of call, wine and beers from those regions served at lunch and dinner. Your glass was always full. The staff was great and was there to meet your every need. Food was great as was the entertainment. The optional excursions were reasonably priced. Our cruise ended in Budapest with an additional 2 day stay. Our hotel overlooked the river and the night lights of the parliament. We took a tour called a taste of Hungary on our own. Would highly recommend it. We didn't leave Hungary hungry! Read Less

Without question, our Romantic Danube River Cruise was the most enjoyable and memorable vacation we have experienced. From the moment we arrived in Budapest to our departure in Nuremberg, every detail was handled with grace, professionalism, and attention to detail. One piece of luggage did not arrive with us. The crew worked all evening and into the night to ensure the bag was at our door the next morning so we had everything before we launched. As a precaution, the crew laundered some items for us during dinner, so we would be ready the next day in any case. We were impressed with the way the crew adapted to the needs of the guests. When it was discovered the first day that some guests could not keep up in a walking tour, coach tours were provided so everyone could participate. When travel up the river delayed our arrival at an intended dock, coaches were made available where we did land to take us to our tour locations and we reconnected with the ship later in the day. Meals were superb and service was a delight. We sat in several areas and each time we were treated by the wait staff like we were friends of the family. The walking tours were very enjoyable and highly educational. These are cruises for thinking people and we value all we discovered. We are Viking fans! We had wanted to visit the Danube region, and were happy to have the opportunity to do so without worrying about transportation or changing hotels. Viking contracts with excellent tour guides for the cities we visited. It would not have been possible to get the flavor of the historic cities of Hungary, Austria and Southern Germany without them. Our cabin was on the lower deck, with a window to et river. It was small but extremely comfortable and perfectly adequate. The food was consistently excellent and a remarkable value. The dining arrangements helped us to make some unexpected and lasting friendships with other couples. The crew and staff were outstanding. We certainly felt spoiled with beer and wine service at the bar. The passage through the Wachau region (between Krems and Passau) was visually stunning, and the onboard guide made it an amazing and enriching experience. We will certainly 'river-cruise' with Viking again! Read Less

Great cruise from start to finish. The whole trip was great. Staff was AAA excellent!! The included tours were well run and the guides were very helpful and knowledge of the subject matter. We did 4 extra tours and everyone was great. The cruise director kept everyone informed of the days adventures, and was well versed in the cities we visited. The food and service was first class. We really enjoyed the social hour from 5 to 7 as it gave you time to meet other passengers and talk about what people had done and sites visited. The cabin service is first class like everything else. We are already planning our next river cruise. Viking has everything figured out so you just have to sit back and enjoy yourself. Our favorite tour was of the BMW factory in Passau. Don't miss it if you are on the Danube tour. You can't help but enjoy yourself. Read Less

I thought this would be a good choice for my very elderly mother and I as we were unlikely to do the tours but wanted to see different places and not have to pack/unpack. We were recommended cabin 301 as being near the lounge, having a balcony and being fairly roomy. We realised on the 3rd day that we would never have a view of the river - only the dock or another boat. Very very disappointing, but I guess I should have done my homework and picked the other side. Never again. From the moment we got on, the boat smelled horribly of sewage, particularly each time it docked. Although it was worse in our cabin, it was also evident on the bow terrace and the upper deck. I complained on the second day and was told to put it on the comments form at the end of the week!! I complained loudly on the 4th day (with a lot of people listening) and made my point that I did not pay almost £7,500 to smell sewage every day and that I would be expecting a big refund. The hotel manager offered me an upgrade to a suite on the other side of the boat. Interestingly, the smell was not at all evident in the new cabin - and of course we now had lovely river views. Pros: service excellent and friendly (though I find the institutionalised tipping distasteful and aggressive), excellent kitchen. Cons: ghastly smell and no views on one whole side of the boat. We didn't take part in the tours but the optional ones were certainly overpriced. Music in the bar way too loud (even if you like jazz). Read Less

An excellent journey from start to finish. You get what you pay for. I went with my father on this 7 night cruise from Budapest to Nuremburg. This was our first experience of cruising of any kind. Not knowing what to expect we were thoroughly pleased from start to finish. The flights with Lufthansa were on time and with my father receiving assistance at the airport we were treated really well and jumped queues. Arriving on the boat in time for lunch we tasted for the first time the fantastic food that we experienced throughout our trip. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all brilliant and sitting mixing with different people each time added to the experience. The staff on board were very helpful and polite. Our cabin was comfortable and the steward tidied it nearly every time we left without being intrusive. Each night our beds were turned down and night clothes laid out. Tomorrows itinerary was left at the end of the bed. The included excursions were very well organised with shorter or slower options for my father very welcome. The guides were excellent as were the drivers. The ear pieces connected to the guides microphone worked superbly meaning you didn't miss a thing they said. Our first day was complimented by 4 airplanes doing acrobatics up and down the river then a fire work display at night...both nothing to do with Viking but a celebration of May Day. The night cruise on the first evening to see Budapest was spectacular. Gottenweig Abbey was one of my favourite excursions but they all were well worth going on. The only optional trip we went on was the Vienese Concert. I was expecting a larger orchestra than 10 instruments but once they started playing I was pleasantly surprised how good they sounded and they were complimented by the wonderful singers and dancers. Because the boat had only 188 people on board we were able to talk to probably over half of them and a real community feeling built up during the week. The coach journey back to Munich Airport was even enhanced. The driver heard of a hold up on the motorway so took us cross country through beautiful Bavarian countryside letting us see quaint villages up close and still arriving at the airport with time to spare. In my opinion if you can afford it a Viking river cruise is a real treat if you like a relaxing holiday where you're really looked after. Read Less

The service was outstanding, greeting at airports, in diningroom, in lounge, on tours etc... Loved the idea of transfers from airport to boat and boat to airport. Didn't have to worry about a thing which is sometimes difficult with foreign languages. Receptionists, tour guides, maitre d', chefs, servers etc....were amazing! I think tipping should be included in price....according to Viking suggestion, the guide gets way more than all the other workers combined! Food and presentation of food was excellent! The free wine and beer really applies.....we were often topped up! Also like the idea of being to bring liquor on board; can even bring it to lounge areas. How refreshing compared to ocean cruises we have been on where no "outside "liquor is allowed. The free airfare deal from certain Canadian cities is an awesome motivator to go cruising. ( unfortunately Winnipeg is never included) All in all A GREAT experience, would love to go do another river cruise with Viking. J and C from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Read Less

We wanted to cruise down the Danube River and Viking had a good reputation for a reasonable price. The ship was beautiful, and the entire staff was outstanding. The food was the best we have had on a cruise, as was the service. Everything was extremely well organized, and we never had to wait very long for anything. The outdoor grill was superb, and would only have been better had they changed the salad and appetizers (great, but same one every night) once or twice during the week. The restaurant was nice too, and not too noisy as on some of the other ships. The cruise director was also great, as was the surprise harbor tour to see the Budapest lights on the last night. The only complaint we had was that the company gave us false information prior to our trip: the dress code was not as stated, which was good for us except for the extra clothes we packed and didn't need, and the outdoor grill was open every night, not just for breakfast and lunch, also good for us, again with the exception of the extra clothes. We would definitely take another Viking cruise, but not this particular itinerary. Read Less

My husband and I were looking for a ship with smaller passenger size and a great reputation. Viking provided us both. We were greeted when we arrived and immediately taken to our room. Our Program Director, Oliver, kept us fully informed in a light humored and friendly way. He made it a point to join us on the excursions to ensure satisfaction, coordination and kept us entertained along the way. He was thoroughly professional and very, very good at what he does. Oliver and his team made sure everyone could participate by planning "leisure" options for individuals that didn't want to or couldn't walk long distances. At the request of guests, they also arranged active excursions that were fully walking events vs. riding coaches and some walking. We participated in 2 of those and received a much closer and more intimate view of two of the cities we visited. Our guides for all of the excursions were very friendly, well-informed about their beloved cities and entertaining. Viking has done a great job of selecting the excursion companies and guides in their destinations. Our Hotel Manager, Franz, runs a tight ship with a very talented staff. He seemed to be everywhere at once during critical times and like Oliver, paid special attention to all of the details. Everyone from the housekeepers to the bar staff to the wait staff in the restaurants and lounge were professional, courteous and well trained. They each made it a point to get to know us and to meet our needs. Our Concierge, Paulina, was always ready with recommendations if people were not taking the included or optional excursions and just wanted to see more of the areas we were visiting. The last evening on board we were in Budapest, Hungary and the team organized a special cruise for us so we could see the evening lights on the river since we had arrived too late the evening before to see them. It provided a wonderful ending to our cruise. Our Executive Chef, Eurgen and his team prepared wonderful meals, most from the areas in which we were traveling, with options as appropriate so that we were always able to have diverse choices. We were completely pleased with our overall experience with our Viking River Cruise on the Danube and would highly recommend them to others. We will travel with Viking again in the future. Read Less

Our guides for the shore excursions were very friendly, well-informed about their beloved cities and highly entertaining. Viking has done a great job of selecting the excursion companies and guides in their destinations. I especially enjoyed the young woman in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic and the nice guide in Melk, Austria. Franz maintained the restaurant and rooms in perfect working order. We saw him frequently ensuring the smallest details were handled quickly and efficiently. We loved our wait staff, Valeri, Marko and Milan. They made our trip with their bright smiles and amenable attitudes. We did not want for a single item. Oktavia was very sweet and smiled so brightly every time you saw her, there was not a speck of dust in our rooms and it was a delight to see our little elephant on our bed after a long day ashore. The reception desk ladies were quite friendly as well and offered several suggestions for local shopping for our grandchildren. They were always smiling and quick to offer assistance or to inquire as to how your day was going. Polina was the concierge on our trip and she was always smiling and eager to assist with the smallest of details to organizing a special evening for fellow travelers. She had plenty of suggestions on how to spend your free time that were quite helpful. Sailing was very smooth and the crew was expert in handling the locks. It was a real treat to peek out the curtains on the night we sailed into Budapest, Hungary to see the city glowing. I could hardly wait until the next evening’s harbor cruise to see it in full glory. I was not disappointed with the harbor cruise; it was the perfect ending to a perfect week. The Executive Chef, Eurgen and his team prepared delicious meals with plentiful options to satisfy every dietary need and even the most discriminating palate. They were presented beautifully, a real pleasure in every sense. It was exciting to see so many different cities and learn about their history and have time to hike, explore, make new friends over dinner, and shop as much as we liked. Other friends recommended Viking and had wonderful experiences. My cousin and i booked this cruise as a retirement celebration two years ago. However, her cardiologist had us cancel just 8 days prior to sailing due to a life threatening health condition. We had booked through AAA and had taken out trip insurance which was used. Fortunately, with her cleared for travel we were able to rebook and take it this past April. I cannot say enough good things about Viking. We were taken care of from the time we landed in Munich until our departure after an extension in Budapest. In fact, our Viking representative stayed with us at the Budapest airport until we had cleared security. Our every need was met in a way that exceeded our expectations. The ship itself was lovely. Meals were fantastic and always had options. The staff was extremely friendly and patient. The inclusive shore excursions were wonderful with outstanding guides as were the optional ones we took. In fact, a co-worker has signed on for a cruise in August and I have booked another cruise for October 2016. The cousins (6) are planning the next river cruise for the spring of 2017. We were impressed with the staff, level of professionalism, service, politeness and going out of their way to accommodate requests. We wanted to visit the countries along the Danube and the river cruise gave us the best way to see multiple cities. We were met at the airport and driven to the ship. Embarkation went quickly and smoothly. The Viking Freya had just been refurbished and everything looked wonderful. Our cabin (with French balcony) was comfortable for the 2 of us. The food served aboard was plentiful and well-prepared. The chef used local foods and specialties in designing the menus. Outside of set meal times, there were pastries near the coffee station in the mid-morning and cookies in the mid-afternoon. Onboard we had informative brief talks each evening preparing us for the next day's stop. Additionally locals came aboard to perform regional dances and songs. Each port had an included tour with optional tours that could be purchased to replace or supplement the included tour. The tours were well-run. Each cabin has audio receivers and earphones in a charging unit so you use the same set for the entire trip. There were large umbrellas available to borrow for when it rained. All the staff were extremely polite, helpful and cheerful. Service was excellent. I am looking forward to taking another river cruise with Viking. Read Less
