We have just arrived in Waremunde, Germany from a 7 day Fjord Cruise on Costa Favolosa. When we first considered Costa as part of our 6 month tour of Europe we were very hesitant. We had sailed three times previously on Costa and we vowed never to sail Costa again. Money being the driving force for this trip, finalized our decision. Keeping in mind our previous experiences with Costa, coupled with their low review ratings, we decided to set sail with very low expectations. Much to our surprise, this trip exceeded our expectations in every area. I want to begin by acknowledging the Hotel Director, Ingrid Happ, Housekeeping Manager, Vincent Braganza and Cruise Director, Naim Ayub. What a fabulous team! From the minute we arrived at the port in Bergen Norway, these 3 professionls went above and beyond to ensure our embarkation was smooth and pleasant. After seeing these 3 in action, I had a gut feeling things were going to be okay. They were fabulous!! We ate in all the dining venues. The food was superb. We did not have one bad meal. The staff at the bars, dining room, lido deck and Chocolatier were amazing. The entertainment from Duo Fiesta, George and Jean Luc were phonomenal. Our room steward Yulia was the best. Special thanks to Victor, and most of all to Marife Rivera and Ron Kasiaro Purba the best bar staff in the cruise industry. The shows were fabulous! The entertainers hired for the shows in Hortensia Theater with the exception of Martin the Magician were top of the line. The animation team were energetic, fun and great! The Brindiamo Drink Package was included in with the price of our room. Although, the ship was full to capacity, we never had an issue getting drinks. In fact, we may have drank too much. Finally, the only sour note in this entire trip was our dining room server. She worked like a robot with no attention to detail or desire to please her guest. We gave her the benefit of the doubt but after a few nights we opted for the Lido Deck freesyyle dining. Overall it was a great cruise and has changed our opinion about future sailings with Costa. We chose this cruise for the itinerary which was extensive and awesome! We went in calling this a Motel 6 on water, having very low expectations. We were so wrong, it exceeded in almost every way. Pro's: The ship is very very clean. The staff is very friendly, and helpful. The food was so good, we never had a bad meal! The food is extremely fresh and presented in a beautiful manner. Even the buffet was good. You do not need a water package, but if you are going ask for a free Water USA package, you will receive a large glass bottle of water with lunch and dinner. There is plenty of ice at the buffet a huge concern of ours, no worries. Ask for ice during sit down meals, had no problem. Our waiter Vipul was wonderful anticipating anything we needed. The entertainment is very good in a beautiful show room, we were sometimes lost with the Italian. Definetley pay for the 19.00 laundry deal. Getting on and off the ship was easy. Con's: The only bad thing was the isolation having nobody to talk to, other cruisers were not friendly at all. Read Less

I am Italian and been many times on cruises of different flagship. This one had a good itinerary, so we went for it. There are a lot of positive things and also a lot of negative one.. I try to mention as much as possible and forgive me is something is missing. What I did not like too much. Booking. I was told by a friend to use a certain tour operator specialized. Then I discovered more and everyone was cheaper.. not much but cheaper. And a lot cheaper then costa.(why) Booked 2 rooms one with a small bed for 3 years old boy. Asked tour operator and was told , don’t worry when you arrive there they will change in case , one of the room to be close to the other one. We have been assignated two rooms at the opposite side of the ship.and also booked in two different restaurant and at two different shift... When we arrived the only worries of the staff was, did you registered for the drink , or coffee or any packages?... the room we have to wait just before the departure.. Registering means you will get services and you will pay after a day or so. Result, no room changes possibility, ship was full. ( why I was told in another way?) To get there I had to ask at least ten people with very important uniform as the office was only serviced by 3 persons for 3500 guests... All the other staff we asked informations couldn’t speak any language unless portoghese... ( brasilians coming from cheapest part of the country) and the rest Philippinos which have a good English. I fluently speak more then 5 languages apart mine.. so I believe I can talk with someone. Not to be too long No informations service good enough Waiting for restaurant second shift. Nightmare... hundreds of guests pushing for getting their seat, and all the staff looking to their biz and not been able to give infos... The smell of food of the carpet closer to the restaurant and almost overall was terrible. Dust in the rooms Curtains in the rooms not cleaned. Service in the room basic. As now the tip is included in the salary, so the effort to get rewarded with ( from a minimum tip up) is not more an advantage, so they don’t care much Anymore. Bed sheets, old and badly pressed, changed maybe every tree dayS or more. All in the ship is for making money. Wherever you stay you can only spend money. Fantastic drink service. You order get your card before the order you have to pay, and finally , at staff leisure you get your drink. Waited for a bottle of wine ordered and payed at the start of dinner and got when we finished the dinner with the sweets.. asked few times and answer was is coming... Same as for drinks aperitives , we ordered 4 spritz and a beer, at 5 pm. Supposed to get peanuts with it. ( for chips you have to pay, but we don’t eat fried things) asked many times, payed appx 50/60 us , even spoken with food and beverage manager, but never got the peanuts, the waiter didn’t care... and we really didn’t want to get drunk at 5 pm.... Thanks Buffet If you don’t like to wait , you can always eat at the buffet restaurant. Fantastic. Only problem is too many people and not so clean. So you have to queue everywhere and think there are so many people of different countries, and different kind of behavior... Disaster Plus they close ever so quick, basically your have very short time to eat . Rooms service or breakfast service you pay, before bkf was free in the room. Table, they sit people as they come, before at least was a lot of questions in order to combine same languages or areas or interests... Ship was cleaned perfectly only the last day or before last, because where a meeting of the oldest traveling agent of costa or so. You would have noticed the difference, everything was like new. Last negative, ship is not old but, bed sheets, chairs , carpet etchas got to be changed more. Even the granit or marble in the floor, greasy , not cleaned with proper products, No more the midnight sweets buffet, just a small and quick self service.... Overall poor and cheaply done, compared with few years before and other companies. Positive, Good music entertainment Good kids entertainment Sometimes evening surprise by dinner with a bit of music.. Good food menu , but the best is written , you have to pay ...( this is not positive) better to have special payment restaurant with exposed menu and with prices) Good itinerary, unfortunately sometimes too short Overall not satisfied . You pay quite a lot for what you get, and considering the service cleaness , etc, no worth for the money. Ps I can afford to pay, just extras I payed 2k . So I don t mind . I wish I had a better service. Definitely I will try other companies for the next cruise.. Hope you will find it better. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it departs and arrives from a single location (Savona), where we can park our car safely. This is our third time to cruise with Costa and we always enjoy their friendly service and their on-board entertainment. The itinerary included some of our favorite locations (Malaga and Barcelona), as well as some places we had not been before (Valencia and Cadiz). The length of stops was okay, except for Barcelona, which was only about 4 hours and was therefore pretty frustrating. Savona is always our starting and stopping place for Costa cruises. This is a lovely little Italian town. Boarding was well organized, with parking and luggage service. We dropped our bags off together with our car, then walked into the terminal and waited for our boarding time. The parking/luggage attendants are really friendly and they took excellent care of our luggage and our car. After boarding, we had time to have a drink or snack while enjoying a view of the harbor, waiting for the cabins to be ready. When our cabin was available, they advised us, and then our luggage was there waiting for us, without incident. Disembarkation at Savona is chaotic and not so well organized. Although Costa enforces the disembarkation schedule, there were too many people in the terminal at one time, making it very hard to negotiate with a wheelchair AND baggage cart. However, we were prepared for this and we just took it as it was. We were driving to our next location so we were not stressed about meeting a plane or train, but I can understand others who did have to deal with that stress. We highly recommend to others to NOT plan to drive a long way on the day you leave the cruise, because you will be really tired. We normally drive a few hours to Firenze (Florence) that day, and that is as far as we would want to drive that day. Prepare to be exhausted at the end of a cruise. On board, we enjoyed the evening shows with fantastic dancers and great musicians. They truly make it easy to have fun. This time we were less than impressed with the overall dining experience, where we felt that the variety was limited, and the qualify of food was not as good as on previous Costa cruises. Unfortunately, Costa does not really cater to travelers in wheelchairs. They have some accessible cabins, but very few accessible suites, and so far we have been unable to get a suite, even though we tried to reserve from the first day the cruise was available online. Maybe we have to have some other connection that we don't know about. More about the cabin below. Excursions organized by Costa do not offer wheelchair accessible buses, so it is up to us to organize ourselves. We gave the "Public rooms" category a lower rating because in many places, the music was way too loud, making it impossible to have a conversation. However, we found a piano bar where the music was to our liking and not too loud, and there we enjoyed snuggling with drinks and having time to just be together as a couple. Overall, we had a great time and are looking forward to another cruise in the next couple of years. One plus of traveling with Costa is that they are registered in Italy and therefore are subject to EU regulations. One of these regulations states that when traveling with a disabled person that needs constant assistance, the companion/carer does not have to pay other than drinks and taxes. Costa respects this regulation and therefore we pay full price only for one of us. However, beware that if you are eligible for this allowance, you must request it from Costa BEFORE departure. We learned about this during our second Costa cruise but too late to request it for that cruise, so this time we were wiser. Read Less

This was my first cruise, so I have nothing to compare it to, but based on my experience on the Favolosa it will be my last. Initially boarding was a nightmare - only 2 people to book in dozens of passengers that all seemed to arrive at the same time. I have no complaints about the (inner) cabin, it was spacious with lots of storage. Suitcases went under the bed. The crew were excellent - very accommodating and friendly. So what was wrong, you ask? First of all the ship is way too big and after 10 days aboard, I still couldn't find my way around. Its also too crowded and noisy. Passengers were mostly Italian and some of the kids were annoying, running everywhere, pressing all the buttons on the elevator etc. The food was pretty bad. Buffet breakfast and lunch was virtually the same meal and it was repeated every day. Due to the crowds, it was also very difficult to find an empty table. We had the late dinner at 9.15 pm and although the menu read well, the food itself was mediocre at best and extremely salty. Some dishes were inedible. We had one of the drinks packages (Brindisi) which wasn't cheap, but only certain drinks were included and as one other reviewer mentioned, bottled water was an extra charge. Costa provided a shuttle bus from the various docks into the cities, BUT it was an extra charge, so we didn't use them. In some cities, time ashore was very limited and we didn't get a real feel for these places. We could have taken their tours, but again, not cheap. We had 2 sea days and they were a nightmare. The crowds of people and noise were only emphasized on these days and one was faced with a wall of people by the elevator doors, so you couldn't even exit the elevator. Entertainment was 'so so'. There were a couple of good acts in the theatre, but the rest were pretty ordinary e.g. karaoke contest, interpretive dancers. I can't believe this ship is only 7 years old. The decor harks back to the 1970's - orange, brown, dark green - not very appealing. Overall I couldn't wait to get off the ship vowing never to do it again! Read Less

The events and the food inside the ship are good. But Costa seriously sins in the organization and contracting of services. For example, I booked through the site a laundry package ($ 29.90) and did not use the service. However, on the day of shipment my credit card was already charged without my having used the service. I looked for customer service and they said they could not extort the value because I hired it in the site! I was at the loss! I also had requested a sparkling wine in my cabin ($ 46.00) to surprise my wife on the day of boarding. I had to call multiple times to receive 2 days later! Never hire the tours offered by Costa. We hired 2: a tour with "cheese and wine tasting" in Tenerife at the most regular. The cheeses we could not even taste because they were "free sample" and finished in a few seconds. The wines were very simple and were not worth the tasting. We ended up going to a small restaurant on our own to eat something! The second tour in Casablanca - Morocco was even worse! The guide was rude and just walked with the sign raised without explaining anything and leaving tourists behind! We did not have time to snack or drink water because the guide did not give us time in the points for this. Aside the mosque all other spots were horrible and it became torture to accompany with hunger and be the guide. In the mosque the guide took men and women to shared bathrooms and without suitable toilets, forcing us to stand up to use! Most of the women were embarrassed and could not even go to the bathroom! I and dozens more customers filed complaint with customer service and we were totally ignored! Read Less

It should be nice trip with my girlfriend and also first experience on the cruise with Costa Favolosa and will be probably our last. This ship is very poorly administered and lacks organization more than 2,500 people eating at two times, we could go for a dinner at 21.15 pm. We waited for order the drinks half an hour, the appetizer came in the another 15 min. We were charged for water, I can understand that you have to pay for wine but water is the essence of life, please, this should be free. The food was not of good quality. After dinner we wanted visit some entertainment, the shows were not so good, we were bored most of the time. Horror was waiting for us in the cabin, when we wanted lay down to the bed, we heared terrible sounds over our ceiling. At the reception, we found out that there is a cowboy party on top of us. We were assured that it ended at 12pm but finally ended at 1.30am. After that, we asked for a change of cabin it was allowed the next day in the evening The ship was too crowded, lots of little kids who did what they want. In the breakfast buffet it was hard to find a place, for example to prepare the fried eggs was the queue for 30 minutes Another strange thing was that you had to pay to use shuttle bus from ship to the city visited. That should have been included. Finally, we were glad we left the ship, never again Costa Cruises Read Less

Hi, we are a couple in early 60s, physically fit and enjoy the port activities. It is about a year since I last cruised with Costa. We did it then because it was cheap and again chose this 4 day cruise , Savona/Barcelona/ Marseilles in November to complete a cheap winter break. The cruise was a surprise, some things radically improved, some things excellent and many important things so bad it defies all logic why Costa should behave the way they do. First of all the prices on board, all up 10% in the last year. All prices in Euros. Compulsory tipping now 10 per day. Cocktails mostly 8.20 plus 15%. Cheaper prosecco 25 plus 15%. We do not buy any of the daily booze deals as we cannot work out any way they could be good value for us. There are other important reasons to avoid them unless you intend to drink in the more unsocial hours (please read on). Food - buffet still limited but the vast majority of food on offer was good. Coffee (poor) available only at breakfast. Free fruit juices are flavoured sugar. Dining - wow what an improvement. Food warm and sometimes hot and really, really good especially if you like Italian food. Service from our waiter Edgar was excellent despite the huge pressure placed upon him (and all other Costa staff). Cocktails are still the poorest on any cruise line we have experienced. Getting on and off the ship - Costa still the best. Quick and prompt. They manage to behave as if it is as simple as it really is. Why cant other cruise lines copy them? The one trip we went on was good and good value although the port transfers were very expensive for those not taking a trip. Now to some serious downsides. The bars and saloons on this ship are mostly confined to deck 5. They are large but the bar areas are small. The coffee lounge is small. By keeping all but one bar area shut before and after dining time they herd all the passengers into a confined area. Around the bars themselves, the queue can be 3 or 4 deep. Sitting down it can be almost impossible to attract waiting staff, although they are working flat out. You need to allow about an hour to place an order and then receive your drink. Watching staff being pursued by passengers trying to place an order is a sorry sight. On one night we eventually managed to order pre-dinner drinks but they only arrived 5 minutes before dinner was starting. It was hopeless. I chatted to staff in quieter moments and they said it was always like this. To enable you to get the picture, imagine 60% of the bar areas shut and the people all corralled into one space. If you have bought a drinks package, or worst of all, the coffee package you are not going to be happy. The staff were cheerful but not surprisingly tempers got a bit short amongst passengers. So, is it a deliberate ploy by Costa to sell as many drinks packages as possible and then limit consumption by making ordering any beverage very difficult? Thats what it looked and felt like. Could not discuss this with management because management only appear to parade themselves to applause, again and again and again, then disappear. The ratio of passengers to staff on Costa is very high (one of the ways they keep costs down). I have never seen staff work harder or be more polite. They really were great. Staff are so sparse however that you had to decide whether you wanted you room cleaned in the morning or night. Compared with other cruise lines this appeared to be a 40-50% reduction in cabin cleaning. We chose to be cleaned in the morning. It worked well and I thought it a sensible cost saving. For my wife, important aspects of a cruise are to be able to drink a pre-dinner cocktail in pleasant surroundings and occasionally to dress formally for dinner. Costa had already removed the latter pleasure by the last time we cruised with them. Now they have removed the former as well. The shows on each night were better than our last Costa cruise. For me they rank equal bottom of the many cruise lines I have experienced , along with MSC. If you have cruised with Princess /Celebrity or Cunard I think you would consider it very clearly inferior but frankly not bad for the price point. We are travelling with Costa again from Dubai in February 18 because I wish to invest in the many excursions available rather than a luxury ship. I just hope the bar situation is sorted by then. My first cruise was only a good month ago with the MSC Fantasia so I don't have much to compare with. We booked the cruise on Costa Favolosa because it was pretty cheap and we had a good experience on MSC. We opted for the cheapest cabin without balcony. A few days before departure we got notice that they improved us to a balcony cabin without extra cost. Very nice! Embarkation was smooth, we were about the only people boarding at the time, but there was no real welcome. Our cabin was immediately ready tho so we started with unpacking our bags before proceeding to a bar. Service throughout the cruise was very slow with a lot of unfriendly personnel, especially at the bars. We had to wait up to 30 minutes to receive our drinks. After 1am it was only possible to get drinks in the disco since all the other bars closed. On one evening the disco had 2 barkeepers that couldn't keep up with the demand so waiting times even extended. Especially because 1 of the 2 was clearly incompetent and seemed to work in slow motion mode (not on purpose, she just couldn't do any better). A majority of the cruise we were waiting on drinks. We had the Più gusto drinking package which included most of the cocktails and most of the cheaper stronger drinks. Maybe the slow service is a way to keep the cost down on those packages. The food was pretty mediocre. The buffet was pretty limited and repetitive in style with long waiting lines, and people trying to ignore those waiting lines, at rush hour due to the fact the buffet was small as well. Compared to MSC where you had 6+ segments of the same food to spread the people out a bit, you have 2 (even smaller) segments on Costa. For dinner we opted for the second seating in the middle restaurant (9pm) but were instead placed in the back restaurant (9.15pm). Not really a big problem on itself but it turned out to be due to a lot of vibrations coming from the engines which made the dining experience very unpleasant. The food there was okay overall. I also had a problem with the fact that it is impossible to get food after the second dinner seating unless you opted to pay for a pizza or hamburger (till 1am). Especially for people that choose for the first dinner seating (6.15pm I believe) that is a very long time without included food. Doesn't feel very vacation like to me. Compared to MSC Fantasia the entertainment was a bit better. Better atmosphere, better live music and a better animation crew. There were some interactive shows with passengers in the grand bar that were kind of fun to watch. We saw 2 shows in the theater: 'Fire and Ice' which was very very good and another one which I can't remember the name of that wasn't. Starting from the evening the sea got pretty rough and there was a lot of wind. And oh boy did we feel that on the ship. According to the party I was with they never experienced that on any other ship except on Costa (twice) and they've done quite a few. I'm very glad this wasn't my first cruise experience but I'm also glad it is my last with Costa! Read Less

With only 3 exceptions (our dining room waiter Mark and two workers at the duty free shop) everyone on the cruise was very unhelpful. The crew also seemed unfriendly and unhappy in general. For example, I went early to the breakfast buffet at 6am, and I asked multiple crew members where an open buffet line: each pointed in a different direction. I had more luck wondering around by myself. The cabin seemed acceptable, however when I was packing I found two dirty socks in different parts of the cabin that were leftover from a previous guest. The food was generally inedible even in the dining room. The cooks at the pool breakfast buffet don't know how to make omelettes. Every day we smelled cigarette smoke in our room and when I asked a passing senior crew member for help he waved his hand at me and walked away without helping or any sympathy. At the casino we supposedly won several free drinks but there was never a waiter around to order one from (we spent several hours there hoping for a free drink the machines said we earned). We paid a lot for the piu gusto drink package, but whenever I asked for wine there were only two choices that were poor quality (I had better wine for 3 euros in Barcelona after the cruise). There were also only two beer options as well. Also, the piu gusto was frustrating because the bars were always crowded and understaffed so it took 10 minutes just to order a drink. We generally liked the excursions, but one of them was cancelled when we got on the ship and for another we were told to pick up our passports starting at 7:15 am. We showed up at 7:15am to wait in line, but they didn't retrieve our passports to start handing them out until 7:45. There was no communication or explanation as a long line formed and people were anxious about making the 8am excursion. One of our travel companions had an extra bar charge on her bill and when she complained before disembarking no one helped her and everyone told her to talk to someone else. The final straw is that on our reservation it clearly states we were to get two $50 onboard credits (total $100) and we only received one $50 credit. We spoke with three different crew members from the reception desk. The last copied my printout of our booking and said he would investigate and call me, but he never did and we never received a credit. I have been on several cruises and this is by far the worst I've ever been on. Read Less
