We have cruised on Costa twice, in 2010 on the Luminosa, in 2011 on the Costa Deliziosa. I am amazed at the low average score. he last cruise we boarded the ship in Amsterdam. Reasonably fast boarding procedure but it will be faster if you are a Costa club member. The Costa Deliziosa is a large ship but with more elevators than you can you care for. Our cabin was nice and spacious and light, the balcony had enough space. You can't book the weather but we spent lots of time outside. The first harbor was Bergen, Norway. Beautiful place and it does not rain there half as often as they say. We have been there many times so we walked around and took the funiculair up the mountain. Then on to Iceland. I like sea days but if you don't then you probably would not have chosen this trip. Your loss. Akureyri on the north of Iceland is a nice small place and has a beautiful botanic garden. There are tours to the volcanic countryside with some beautiful sights and a large waterfall. From Iceland we sailed to Greenland. There we visited 2 harbors, small villages, where you were landed on shore with the boats. We watched whales, visited a Inuit family, walked to a gletcher and enjoyed every minute of our stay there. Lots of ice around us. Returning to Reykjavik we had another view of Iceland, then on to the Faroer which is a beautiful number of islands, last port of call was Invergordon in the north of Scotland and after a day at sea back in Amsterdam. On the ship there were lots of activities, nice shows in the large theater, disco for the youngsters (there were lots of young people on board) and some very nice singers in the bars. We dined at a table with 5 other couples, who were matched by the catering staff after the first hectic evening. Perfect! Now I am writing all this just to tell you how we enjoyed this trip and have not met a single person who was not full of enthusiasm. The ship is excellent and the prices on Costa are very reasonable compared to other, moe luxury cruiselines. Read Less

We joined the cruise at Amsterdam, having made our own way there and spending a couple of days sight seeing before we embarked. Embarkation was slow and a bit haphazard, but we eventually boarded around 2.30, having arrived at 1.30. Lunch was provided on arrival and our cabin was ready immediately, our bags arrived quickly too. All good news to start with. The first impression of the ship is that is gaudy and glizzy - one might say full of bling. The colours used throughout are really bright, with loads of lights, which almost hurt the eyes to look at. Cabins, however, were light, bright and much less colourful! The standard of accommodation in the cabin was very good, it was always kept beautifully clean and everything worked, as you might expect on an almost new ship. We picked this holiday for the itinery - Tallin, St. Petersberg, Stockholm, Helsinki, Copenhagen and back to Amsterdam so the programme was quite hectic with lots of time in port. We only did excursions in St. Petersberg and did our own thing in the other ports which worked out well. Most times the ship was 'parked up' quite a way outside the town and Costa put on shuttle buses for passengers, which worked well but were quite expensive. There were times when staff at the tour desk were rather misleading of their description of how long it might take to walk into town, which meant that one bought a shuttle bus ticket when it was not necessary. The standard of the excursions we did was very good but because of the lateness of one arriving back to the ship we were unable to take another trip which we had booked, which was very annoying. Days at sea were full of opportunities to do something but most of it was not to our taste. There were approximately 300 English speaking passengers out of 2200 (ship not full), the majority of the rest were Italian. This resulted in multi-language announcements which could get intrusive. For example, the 'card room' is actually an open space on the side of the biggest lounge area. Whenever cards were being played (e.g. Bridge), there would be a fashion show, quiz or someting else noisy going on right nearby which was irritating. Because of the open plan nature of the lounges as well, smokers were placed quite close to non smokers, so there was often a smell of cigarette smoke wherever you sat. The evening meals were extremely good, although some of our table-mates were critical of the level of choice. Each dinner was at least five courses and some of them were 'themed'. We were on second sitting, which was not until 9 p.m. This meant that often we did not finish eating until 11, after which one could go to the disco or a show if one wanted. The self-service cafeteria was always a bit of a scrum and we ended up trying to avoid it for breakfast, going to the restaurant instead. Lunch was available at both locations too. My biggest grip with Costa is that they try to get more money out of you whenever they can. From the minute you board the ship, they take photographs of you at every opportunity, for which they charge 9.99 euros each. Of course, you don't have to buy them, but it does become irritating. We also had a bottle of water in our cabin with a note saying that if we opened it, the price would be charged to our bill - about 1.30 euros, I think. This is petty when, had we paid full price, the cabin would have been 4000 euros between the two of us. There is also a fee-paying restaurant that one can use as an alternative (20 euros)and cappucino and espresso coffees are also charged as extras. One lovely event is the 'elegant tea' which happened twice within our cruise, beautiful variety of teas, exquisite sandwiches and cakes with strawberries dipped in chocolate. Everyday afternoon tea was supplied in the self-service restaurant, but the elegant one was far superior. Disembarkation was well organised and our luggage easy to find when we got off. I wouldn't go with Costa again because I didn't really enjoy the daytime activities and wouldn't want to pay full price but I suspect that it would suit some people very well. Read Less

We thought the Costa Victoria was lovely at the time, but the Deliziosa beats it hands down. Modern and beautiful, this ship is stunning.We have done the Middle East trip before, but this time had to miss Bahrain due to the unrest. Not keen on staying in Oman for two days, would have preferred Abu Dhabi.We had a balcony cabin which was lovely, cant fault it. Lots of storage space, adequate wardrobe space, huge bed. And the shower room although typically small on cruise ships, cant complain about it at all.The ship was always spotlessly clean, cabin and public areas. The only down-side in our opinion is how it is a "smoking" ship... lots of the public areas, including bars and casino allowed smoking, which as non-smokers we found horrible.Even around the pool area smoking was allowed, which meant I couldnt spend any time there as the smell was so awful. If I could ask Costa to change anything it would be to inpart a smoking ban like we have in the UK, and limit smoking to their cabins or on upper decks maybe.Breakfast menu was more than adequate, lunch got a bit boring. The buffet area tended to serve up the same old same old each day.... hope you are fond of chicken and pork, it appears to be the dish of choice!The two things that Italians are supposed to be legendary for we found the most dissapointing..... pizza quite tasteless and bland (get better in Pizza Hut!) and the ice cream is truly awful. (was it ice cream or coloured water?) Evening meal very nice, small portions but with seven courses they needed to be small! Great atmpostphere in restaurant, staff always fun and courteous.Evening entertainment OK. Better shows on the Costa Victoria, a little more varied than just the singers and dancers on offer on this cruise. OK for a week but couldnt have put up with any more shows after that!Tried the gym out which was great, huge and very well stocked with equipment. The running track disappointing.. so small.You would get dizzy running around there.Recommend the F1 Yas Marina tour when stopping in Abu Dhabi. Really interesting even for anyone who isnt particularly into F1. Tour Guides brilliant.ALl in all I think Costa are a great cruise line. They excell in their organisational skills and from embarkation to disembarkation they look after you with total professionalism. Read Less

we didn't choose the ship or the company, but we went for the Middle East itinerary.having sailed in owners suites on both Holland America and Royal Caribbean, we knew it would be a bit of a step back, but, as we sailed with Carnival in suites as well, we got exactly what we expected.nice ship, o.k. food (but not at lunchtime, not even in the main restaurant) and nice entertainment (except for the theater shows, they were below par, not to mention the "VIP captains cocktail party", which was a absolute no-go)cabin is nice and clean, not so roomy, but ok; strange thing however that these most expensive cabins on the ship are placed outside of the slightly more upscale "samsara" section.HUGE (and I mean HUGE)wrap around balcony is fantastic, but next time I would rather be midships or forward, were all other cruise lines put their suites: it is just to noisy and shaky: vibrations from propulsion and ventilation put the room and veranda in a constant tremor and, when it's located on deck eight, be sure to be awakened every morning at 06.30 when the deck crew starts shovelling the deckchairs around don't be lured by the "butler service" because it is almost non-existent.if you plan to buy drinks on a regular basis, be sure to buy the not-advertised "L2" drinking package before you sail, it includes (almost) all drinks, e.g. squeezed O.J., sparkling water, espresso, but also wine and liquor.once on the ship you cannot obtain this package and drinks are relatively expensive!we sailed during the Middle East Upraise, so the cruise line had to adjust it's itinerary, scrapping Bahrain from it and adding an extra half day at sea, what I didn't mind, partly for that I prefer as many sea days as possible on a cruise, partly because the ports of call were not that great to start with.Oman/Muscat is by far the best p.o.c., atmosphere there could come closest to what one expects from the fairy tale middle east. (don't forget to visit the Grand Mosque, you will have to start early because it closes at 11.00 a.m., but, being in the Panorama Suite that won't be a problem for reasons mentioned above)Forget about Fujeirah (stay on the ship or be ripped of by the tour desks' beach tours).Abu Dhabi's skyline and corniche is great, but, partly because we were there on Friday, it lacks atmosphere Read Less

We had done the same itinerary in Feb 2010 on RCI Brilliance,and wanted some winter sun with a shortish flight so booked ourselves a reasonable cost package on the Deliziosa. Having first read the reviews we were a little apprehensive but went with an open mind,lookng forward to trying Costa for the first time. We booked the X1 drinks package beforehand as it seemed the best option for us(we enjoy a glass of wine or two with our meals!)I would have to say that if you are at all fussy about the wine you drink it may not be for you!There is no choice, only house wine(red white or rose)This is non negotiable(we even tried bribery!)and as mentioned by a previous reviewer once the bar staff know you have pre-bought the X1 they tend to avoid you as there is no serice charge to be gained! if you are happy to get your drinks from the bar its not a problem. In the main restaurant after the first night our bottle of wine was always waiting for us on the table and it was never a problem getting another(thirsty work this cruising!) As we arrived in Dubai at 9pm our first meal experience was in the buffet retaurant and I would describe as 'okay' next morning we ordered room service and this arrived promptly(in fact as a guideline order the later slot than you actually want as it always arrived 15-20 mins early) By now we were feeling a little deflated(mediocre food poor wine etc) but I must be honest things got better from there on. The food in the main restaurant was absolutely delicious could not fault it at all,the service was good and the whole atmosphere was super(buzzing and cheerful) We shared our X1 wine with the others on our table several times (they seemed to like it better than us!)and enjoyed their good company. I did not use the spa so cannot comment although the prices were pretty hefty and the staff always seemed to be trying to drum up trade(perhaps if it was a bit more afordable?) The entertainment was okay-on a par with most cruise ships though a special mention must be made for Arthur Petterson (main theatre and piano bar excite)who was a legend! Around the ship is spotlessly clean as was our cabin,which was a good size and had a lovely size balcony with recliner chairs (great for relaxing with a drink after a hard day in the sun!) Our favorite port was Muscat where you can walk from edge of port into the pretty town to haggle in the souks and stroll along the seafront. Our whole cruise experience with Costa was a good one.We thoroughly enjoyed being amongst many other nationalities definately in the minority but found everyone friendly and polite. Everything went smoothly and simply (we didnt need to visit customer relations once)everything can be arranged on the interactive totems-a brilliant idea-though if you need help it is always available. If you could describe yourself as enjoying fun and open minded you will love this ship as we did.Cant wait to go again and wouldnt hesitate to recommend it.Dont miss the midnight buffets that happen most nights they are the best we have experienced and loads of fun too! Embarkation We arrived about half an hour after the allotted time and found no queues. Staff were friendly and helpful. Bags were delivered to our cabin in a few minutes. Others we spoke to who arrived too early had not had a pleasant experience as they were not allowed to board, although there was a baggage drop area. Ship This is a new ship and as you would expect is in excellent condition. Some areas were roped off for varnishing and painting on some days but it did not cause a problem. From the outside it is not a pretty ship but the interior is very different. Full of 'over the top' Italian styling with chrome, glass, mirrors, chandeliers and original artwork everywhere. All a bit garish for more conservative British tastes but nevertheless quite spectacular. Cabin We booked an outside cabin with balcony. When our tickets arrived we had been supposedly "upgraded" to a Samsara cabin. I could not see any difference between this and the regular B2 balcony cabin excepting it was on the Samsara deck, one higher. In truth, this was a downgrade as we experienced quite a lot of noise from the Lido deck directly above. Otherwise it was clean and comfortable with plenty of storage. Check your minibar is stocked with what is on the list. Ours had discrepancies. Activities These are many and varied, ranging from the usual poolside stuff to golf, table tennis, F1 simulator, dance classes, etc. etc. If you want to partake, there is something to suit everyone at almost any time of day. Or, like us, you can just read a book or wander round the huge decks or have a coffee in one of the many bars. There is an excellent, under used gym with state of the art equipment. Dining Our fist dinner was in the buffet as we were too late for the more formal main dining rooms. It was typical buffet food. Luke warm and overcooked but edible. We gave it a miss for most of the week except for the occasional breakfast which was fine if a bit noisy and crowded. If you enjoy a drink with your meals then order the X1 drinks package which gives you unlimited wine by the glass, beer and water in any of the dining rooms, but not the bars. In practice, if you order a glass they bring you the bottle to help yourself. Our evening meals were top notch. Excellent food, perfectly cooked and presented. If you want a more personal dining experience try the Samsara or Club restaurants. We found the extra cost to be worth it. Service All the waiters, bar staff and our steward were excellent. Always cheerful and efficient. We tipped our steward and dining room waiter because we felt they had given excellent service but on the Costa web site (very confusing incidentally), it says tipping is not expected or necessary. A service charge is added daily to your onboard account for the cabin and for any bar drinks or services you buy using your Costa card. Entertainment There is a nightly show in a state of the art theatre. Not always to our tastes but surprisingly good. Two shows depending upon which dining sitting you are allocated. We also enjoyed the 4D cinema. There is a huge casino if you like that sort of thing and also at least 5 bars with live music plus a disco. Excursions We did two city tours. Quite expensive but interesting and informative if you get a good guide. The rest of the time we used the free shuttle buses to get from the ship to the port perimeters and did our own thing. Muscat was our favourite place to wander around. Disembarkation Costa use a coloured luggage label system depending on what time you want to leave the ship (you choose the time). Guests do not have to vacate their cabins until 16.30 and can leave the ship later still if required. No problems at all, with our luggage on shore at the time we asked for. Summary This was our first cruise and after reading a lot of reviews on the Costa Deliziosa, ranging from "never again" to "wonderful" I have to say we were not expecting too much at the price we paid but we were pleasantly surprised. We spoke to others who found things to moan about but I don't really know what they were expecting on what was a budget package. The ship caters for first class if you want to enjoy the comforts and exclusivity of the Samsara Spa and suites but you have to pay for it. Read Less

The ship was absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean and the destinations laid out for passengers was first class, most of the time. The meals and the service in the dining room was excellent. The waiters very helpful and courteous. However the meals in the self service areas was awful. If you did not like pizzas or burgers every day you had unapertising salads. Very unimaginative. No notices to say where breakfast, lunch or dinner was being served and the staff were rude and very unhelpful. The reception desk - some staff were extremely nice, but others looked as if they did not like their job of work and a brief word was offered. The information over the tannoy system was in 6 or 7 languages and the British language was spoken so quickly with an accent we could not understand. I cannot find words to describe the dreadful manners of the other holiday makers on board, I will refrain from mentioning which country's they were from, but the cruise was mainly catered for three main countries - so those reading this review, if it is printed, will know exactly who I mean and they were not British. There were only a handful of British people on board, and those we spoke to were very unhappy with the way we were treated. If I was elbowed out of the way once, it happened on several occasions. I was black and blue!! The British girl giving the disembarkation talk was appalling. We were told over a full 10 minutes that we must put excellent in box No. 1? If not it would not be fair on all members of staff. Does this tell a story? Sorry folks, but that was my first Costa cruise and it will be my last. A very expensive cruise once on board. Read Less

We travelled from Cairns, Australia to join Deliziosa in Dubai for the 7 night cruise. We were able to board the ship around PM but did not get access to our cabin until around 8 PM. Some guests did get into their cabins earlier. The cabin was a good size for comfort and there was plenty of storage space. We did not have any problems with the cabin other than occasionally the shower drainage was not adequate. The cabin stewardess did an excellent job and everything was always ready when we needed it. We found all staff to be very polite and helpful even though we only speak English. The meals in the dining room were of a very good standard and the service was excellent. We had the company of two couples from England at our table and enjoyed their company very much. The buffet meals were also good but we thought there could have been more choices on offer. The X1 wine package was a great deal and we would use this again. We found the activities on board the ship including the theatre entertainment in the evenings to be satisfactory and some of the shows were extremely good. We used the gymnasium often and it is very well equipped. The decor of the ship is truly beautiful and of the highest standard. The amenities of the ship are also very attractive nad it is easy to get around. We would be very happy to do another Costa cruise. Read Less

It was very great. The ship was new and often cleaned and the condition of the ship was well! The itinerary was okay - we visited Dubai, Muscat, Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. Very interesting. The food was also good - okay, the first day, the breakfast was a bit disappointing, but all other days we liked it. Dinner was great - every day. We had to dine in the main restaurant (late eating time). Our waitress was very kind and did a good job. We also liked our stateroom - a mini suite with veranda - very good. The cabin had a lot of space. Our steward could be better. All in all the service was okay. And the freetime? The ship had a lot of innovations, but we didn't use it very often - only the gymnasium, the grand priy simulator and the 4d-cinema. We all liked it. Very recommandable - we would like to go their again! Read Less

First let me say Savona is not an easy city to reach from the airport so if you can book a shuttle do so. Costa does not allow you to use theirs unless they book your flight. Weird customer service if you ask me but I am an American. We used local transportation and it all worked out ok. We stayed at the NH Darsena hotel the night before and it was wonderful. A two minute walk to the ship. This hotel has absolutely the nicest desk crew in the world. So very helpful and more than willing to speak English. The ship itself is magnificent from the very first view at the dock. The check in process is slow, tedious, and poorly set up. It is also the first time I met a rude employee. She was one of the very few. Once on board you are immediately surrounded by a magnificent interior. It is truly amazing right from the lobby. Here is where the desk crew is located. I had read many reviews criticizing them and mentioning hoe rude the were to Americans and English speaking people. Nothing could be more wrong! Day in and day out they were exemplary and more than willing to speak to you in any language. They were even extremely nice at 3 AM when hundreds of passenger sought out Dramamine. The room is nice. Well designed and laid out. The balcony however, is usually either being sprayed with water and salt from the sea or being cleaned to remove that same salt. Pretty much non-usable during our cruise. If you enjoy a nap in the afternoon forget it! The stewards are noisy and constantly in the hall. TV for English speaking is either the BBC or Al Jazeera movies which are subtitled in an arab language. On board is wonderful. Just walking and enjoying the ship is a good time. Everything is top shelf. Afternoons spent in the lounge playing cards and drinking good coffee is fun. Many do it. The theater is good but nothing above what anyone else has. A good and enjoyable show. Well rehearsed with good presentation. Shipboard activities are pretty much the standard fare. The working crew however goes out of their way to be friendly and helpful. They can be an invaluable asset. The kiosks that answer questions and dispense tickets are a great idea! So much time can be saved. Shore excursions were fun. They use good people and they are knowledgeable. It was a bit disconcerting to have an armed guard on every bus though. Nothing can prepare you for the hustlers at the pyramids. They are like vultures with road kill. This cruise was to some beautiful places. Santorini is breathtaking. We never did a lot of walking although some was in desert and tiring. The food was a disappointment. The same pizza everyday and pizza here in Boston's north end is better. Much better. The buffet is great the first day but by day 3 is pretty much the same. Some days you wonder if it is yesterday because it looks like it did yesterday. Two things stand out. Healthy options are available and the Italian salami is to die for. The dining room had a wonderful staff of waiters. Friendly, courteous and they want you to tell them about USA. Ours, Edwin, was magnificent. He did such a good job. Every evening he knew what I drank for wine and had the coffee ready just when I needed it. It is an amazingly efficient operation. The food was well prepared and the presentation was excellent. I expected more from an Italian ship. I mean, hey, food is their forte! Overall a cruise worth taking. We enjoyed it thoroughly. Read Less

First things first, getting on the ship - the embarkation process was very fast and trouble free. We boarded the ship at about 12noon, our cabin was ready and our luggage and cruise cards where already waiting for us. The ship was beautiful, it was kept very clean by a small army of dedicated crew who seemed to work non stop. Our cabin was spacious and very comfortable, and was kept spic and span by our cabin steward Crisanto, he was very attentive and no request was a issue for him. The meals in the MDR where of high quality as was the service from our waiter Avery, the menu had great selections and the food was well presented and always arrived hot. Eating in the buffet for breakfast and lunch was always interesting, there was always a great selection to choose from, and the pasta stations where always a great option. The only thing was the buffet area became a bit crazy sometimes, but it was always entertaining. There was a midnight buffet every night, we never made it it any. The club restaurant was very special, well worth a visit, the food and service is top notch, a real treat was where they make ice cream for you at your table with liquid nitrogen and the steam floats over your table - very special. The entertainment was very good with a good variety of shows to suit all tastes. The Squok club kept our children aged 4 & 8 entertained with a variety of activities. Our youngest was a little scared at first as there where no English speaking children her age, but she soon settled in. The english language barrier was never an issue, as all the crew are required to speak English, some speak & understand it better than others but it was very easy to communicate. Rebekah our English speaking hostess was always available to help out, but we did not have any problems. Rebekah was fantastic, she arranged quizzes & deck walks and other little activities for the English speaking guests. As I said we booked 3 cruises back to back. The first 7 days was Norway and there is not much to say other than - BREATHTAKING. Of the ports that we visited Flam and Hellesylt & Geiranger where my favourite. The second cruise was another 7 days but this time it was to the Blatics and again it was all stunning. St Petersburg & Tallinn are the stand out picks on that leg of our holiday. The final cruise was 10 nights back to Savona "The Crossing" is what the crew was calling it, they where heading to thier home port for the first time since the ship was launched to there was quite an air of excitement on board. (we did the exact same cruise last year) all our port stops where great. All in all this was so far our best holiday ever, and I would recommend the Costa Deliziosa to any of my friends and family. Cruising Italian style is an experience that will leave you with many many fond memories - well for us it has anyway..... Read Less

After reading the reviews on the Costa Deliziosa, we were worried that we wouldn't like it, but having already tried Royal Caribbean, Princess and Island Cruises I can honestly say Costa were far better than our previous cruises. The ship is immaculate, the staff were brilliant, very attentive and really nice, the food was excellent, good quality, served very efficiently and well presented and the entertainment was far better than RC or Princess. We embarked at Dover, with the cruise having started in Copenhagen, we were two of only 20ish english speakers on the passenger list out of 2600, the passengers were mainly italian and german, but we never had a single problem with language as a very large proportion of the staff were very good english speakers. We visited Le Havre (check out the awesome church), Vigo, Lisbon (stunning) Cadiz (where we went to Seville - again stunning) and Malaga, we ended up in Savonna where we flew back to Gatwick. Embarkation and disembarkation were very well organised. The highlights of the cruise were the animators who entertain the passengers around the ship with the hysterical Fabito who does candid camera stunts which are shown before the evening shows. The evening shows are glitzy, professional and nice with a crew x-factor type show which was lovely. The english hostess Rebecka was really attentive but not "in your face" and always available if we had a problem, which we didn't. I would really recommend Costa it is far better than the previous reviewers have reported. We will definitely use them again. Read Less

embarkation day was messy and a long wait in a very hot room with few seats. finally getting called to board, we made on our onto the ship, but were not allowed to go directly to rooms, as they were not all ready yet, so we joined the hoards in the Buffet area. This would prove to be the first of many disappointing meals. When we found our rooms, they were nice, roomy and well-lit, but with smaller closet spaces than I had expected, and very basic needs in the bathroom. Our steward was very nice, and was accessible at all times thru the cruise, in fact, he was the one bright star on the trip. After the long,(as it was given in many, many languages) safety drill, we all met up in the dining room for the second of bad meals. I doubt I have ever seen such a display of boring-to-mediocre offerings on any cruise line. You had little to no choice but to buy drinks-even non-alcoholic types. There was orange juice (or grapefruit some mornings) tea, coffee and water for lunch and dinner, and everything else had to come thru the bar, even iced tea, which was canned! The one thing that I would label edible was the pasta with meat sauce, most everything else was just this side of passable. For an Italian cruise line, you would think pizza would be good, but the frisbees they offered were more like three-day old crust with a thin smear of sauce, thinly sprinkling of cheese, and your choice of either margarita style or sliced (and really greasy and awful) hot dogs......yes, hot dogs for sausage!I have eaten a lot of pizzas, even in Italy and they would probably chuck these things into the garbage, also. The soft serve ice cream machine was thinned down with water to make it go further, but also added chunks of ice to your dessert, salad dressings were watered down to serve more people, and the desserts were just plain bad. The staff in the MDR tried their best to serve, but are so over-worked it was hard for them to do a decent job. Courses were skipped, food forgotten, drinks never served and bread baskets not filled was pretty much the norm every night. And no buffet for dinner? Come on, it was the MDR, the pay-for-dining venue, or nothing. One night one of our people didn't wait formal dinner, and wandered up to the buffet where he spied hamburgers being cooked only to be told he wasn't allowed to have one, as it was for the kid's formal meal. Would one burger really short them that much? The decor of the ship, I find loud and garish, nothing seems to match or have a scheme to it, it looks like random, brassy items shoved into a room together. altogether a cruise that made us flee the ship at every port to seek out food and make me resolve to never set foot on a Costa ship again. In case you think I am judging this by one bad cruise, we did a Costa trip a couple of years ago, and as mad as I was at that cruise, this one topped it by a mile! Read Less

Just back from my first Costa (have done Cunard, Princess, HAL, RCCL, Carnival before). Deliziosa is a new ship and a such was in excellent condition. Embarcation at Copenhagen was painfully slow. They had only 2 desks, manned by ship's dancers who only had to check name on embarcation form you carried with your passport. No computer terminal or even a printed list to tick names. Still took them for ever. I stood in a queue for 1 hr 25 mins. An elderly lady behind me fainted, and I'd be surprised if she was the only one that day. Costa Card (combined room key/on board charge card) was in the cabin. Plenty of storage space in cabin, cabin steward excellent with high standards and desire to help when needed, cabin tv channels not good unless you speak Italian, French, German, Spanish. Only English-speaking channel was BBC World. Whole ship was very clean, most staff speak reasonable English, announcements were made in 5 languages but I got used to that and would just switch my ears off after hearing the first one I understood. Evening shows were ok - the multi-lingual ventriloquist (sounds painful) was a scream and I literally cried laughing. Excursions expensive but I do my own thing anyway - you can find everything there is to know and see about your destinations on line and don't have to spend a fortune on ship's tours. Food - well, compared to other lines it was disappointing. Buffet at lunchtime was ok, but nice to have waiter service in main restaurant at lunchtime if you're not ashore. It's open dining then so you can go when you want between 12 - 1.30 and don't have to sit at your assigned dinner table. Evening buffet not good, unless you like pizza. All they have is pizza, one pasta dish, one fish that to me screamed 'school dinners fish' and when I was there, the meat option was luncheon meat. Restaurant dinner menu disappointing but you can always get salmon or steak if you don't like that evening's menu. Hazlenut ice cream - now that really was Deliziosa. Room Service continental breakfast was ok and no extra charge. If you want RS any other time there's a 2 Euro charge. They don't do room service for lunch or dinner - I guess they're busy in the restaurant. Drinks very expensive. Even the Cocktail of the Day was 5 Euros which gets to almost 6 by the time they add the service charge and I don't think £5 for the day's cheap cocktail is particularly cheap. I'd gone on a last minute super-cheapie and had no budget for many extras, so stuck to normal water at dinner and didn't suffer from it. You can always get tea (lots of choice of fruit, herbal, normal, etc)or coffee in the lido buffet up to 11pm. Several bars to relax in, but none for peaceful relaxation as they all have some sort of live music in the evening. Casino - only takes your Costa Card, not cash, inc. the slots, so restraint needed there. Can get a bit smokey. There are smoking areas in the bars and one side of the pools. Less than half those dining had dressed to the "Gala" dress code on both those nights, so if you don't want to take fancy clothes you won't feel out of place. Internet's expensive but before I went I'd googled free wifi and found plenty of places I could use their computers (usually public libraries) or my netbook wifi for free. Some places you could get on line just off the ship - watch for where the crew go - when you see lots of Filipinos at their laptops, chances are there's free wifi. Would I go Costa again? If I got a good deal like this one (under £350 for balcony cabin for sole occupancy for a week including flights), Yes. Read Less

I am a first time cruiser and chose the Costa Deliziosa "Jewels of the Emirates" cruise round Dubai as this is somewhere I had always wanted to visit and the cruise seemed to have everything I was after. Myself and my partner chose to pay for the J2 package before we left out. We could take any drink we liked from the minibar excluding super alcoholics (not sure what they were actually - but we took cans of beer, bottles of Prosecco, water and soft drinks)and these were all included in the J2 package. It was nice to be able to raid the minibar as in hotels we always have to stay well away!!! It was great not having to think about how much each round was costing when we went out in the evening - as the drinks were all included (provided they were under 6.99 euros - but most things - glasses of wine, bottles of beer, pints of beer, cocktails - were under this price). We spent £450 for 2 people on this package and would have spent well over £600 if we had paid for each drink separately - so this was well worth it. We often stayed out until 12 - 1am and had a few drinks in the day - so if this sounds like you, I would recommend this drinks package. The ship was sparkling clean and the cabin stewards never seem to stop working. All the bar staff were polite and helpful and I did not come across one grumpy member of staff in the whole of my stay. We had a balcony cabin which was lovely. To be able to sit on the balcony and just watch the world going by was amazing. I thought the entertainment team were great - yes they try to get you up on the dance floor to play games etc., but that is their job and there are plenty of other bars to go to if this is not your thing. The swimming pools are a bit small however I have never seen a picture of a decent sized swimming pool on a cruise ship - so this did not surprise me one bit. The food in Restaurant Albatross was amazing. We missed the first couple of nights and ate in the buffet - but after eating in the restaurant once - we never went back to the buffet for dinner - the food was just gorgeous. Buffet however is fine for dinner and late night munchies!! Embarkation was quick and simple. We could embark any time from 3pm but visited Dubai in the afternoon so got to the ship around 5pm. We went through all the formalities and then just walked straight on - no queues!! Disembarkation was the same - we left our cabin at 6.40am, collected our passports and disembarked and were on our transfer coach by 7am. I honestly cannot fault one thing about this cruise. I would not choose to go back to Fujairah or Abu Dhabi which were two places on our itinerary - however this is nothing to do with the cruise itself - and would have no qualms about choosing Costa again. PS - Hi to Susan, Paul and Jack in Holland if you read this!!!!!!!!! Port 1 - Muscat (Oman) Rating - 5+ The first port we visited after setting sail was Muscat (Oman). The cruise ship provided a shuttle bus to the edge of the port and when we left that we walked the short distance to the nearby souk. This was amazing! Rows and rows of stalls/shops selling typical middle eastern souvenirs and the people are all so friendly! We spent a happy few hours wandering around until our feet started to hurt(!) - so then walked back to the shuttle. I would definitely recommend visiting here for presents and souvenirs!! Port 2 - Fujairah Rating - 1 Second port of call was Fujairah (UAE). Very disappointed with this. We paid 6 euros each for a shuttle to the LuLu Supermarket - which was basically a tiny shopping centre - the main focus being a shop a bit like Tesco!! We were not sure what to do here and got a lot of hassle from taxi drivers and people trying to sell you excursions to the forts, mosques etc. This is not really our thing so we declined. The kind shuttle bus driver agreed to drop us at the marina - but when we got there, there was nothing there either! We then got a taxi to a "beach" which was more like a building site and then the taxi driver refused to take us back to the LuLu so we had to flag ANOTHER taxi to take us back - he told us the price would be 10 dirham - only to change it to 10 euros when we got out!!! Beware of this - I have read this a couple of times from other people. Unless you have an excursion booked - or there is something you know you want to visit here - I would probably recommend just staying on the ship! Port 3 - Abu Dhabi Rating - 2 Third port of call was Abu Dhabi. Again we paid 6 euros each for the shuttle which took us along the main road along by the sea - this was a lovely journey with nice scenery. We were dropped at the Marina Mall - but were hoping there would be other little shops about. There weren't really any other places to go so we were a bit disappointed as we were hoping for little shops like the ones in Oman. If you enjoy your shopping centres though - I am sure you would like it. There are beaches around which would be great for sunbathing but unfortunately we had not taken towels and swimming stuff - so we went back to the ship. Port 4 - Bahrain Rating - 5 We nearly did not leave the ship to see Bahrain as the last couple of stops had been disappointing however we made ourselves get up and were really pleased we had!! We again paid 6 euros each for the bus - the journey was about 25 minutes though - so not too bad. The bus took us to Manama City which was amazing!! A bit more built up and modern than Oman - but the same kind of nik naks and market stalls! We were able to stock up on more presents and were really pleased that we visited. Read Less

I'm not sure if I was on the same Costa Deliziosa as other reviewers here as we found it to be an excellent ship with excellent staff and excellent food. I traveled with my DW and DM. The cruise was Dubai to Savona, with stops at 8 ports. Embarkation We flew out on the Saturday and had an overnight in a hotel near the airport. There was a Costa rep waiting for us as we came out of immigration at about 1.15am. Well, I say he was waiting for us - I'm not so sure. He definitely wasn't there when I walked on ahead to find him, he only appeared when the DW followed by some 20 seconds later......her shouts across arrivals of "he's here, where on earth are you going?" were most unfair I thought. The next day we were picked up at around 3pm and were transferred to the terminal where all formalities were completed very quickly and we were on board within 20 minutes or so. There were no queues and no long periods of sitting around as we have experienced before with other lines. We were told that cabins probably wouldn't be available until around 6.30 and this was the case, so we took the opportunity to grab a bite to eat in the buffet and to take a look around the ship. There were quite a few people hanging around waiting to disembark and I think it's great that Costa allow people to stay on the boat - there's nothing worse than being asked to leave the boat at 9am and being left at an airport for the next 12 hours. Not once did I give the little smile that says "oh dear, must you leave already, we've only just got here". Cabins The cabins were excellent, quite roomy with good storage space. There was a sofa-bed (as well as the real one of course), flat screen TV, mini-bar/fridge and a reasonable sized shower area in the fair sized bathroom. The balcony was one of the 'large' ones and was a great size, I just wish they had put a couple of recliners on there instead of the rigid chairs - that would have made all the difference. The downside to the rooms? The beds were on the hard side and the single pillow supplied was very flat and seemed to be of the cheap, firm foam variety, a couple of extra Euros spent here would have made the cabin that bit more comfortable. The Steward had no problem however in supplying a few extra pillows along with the extra chair for the balcony we requested. Food Breakfast always brought an excellent selection of pastries and breads, the omelettes were also very good. The bacon and sausage were very poor however; the bacon very fatty and undercooked and the sausage had a strange taste and consistency to which mere words would not do justice. We used both the MDR and buffet for breakfast and found the quality and choice the same in both, so we just went where was most convenient for what we had planned for the day ahead. Lunch time took us to the buffet. Here the food didn't have too much in terms of variety, but we felt the quality definitely made up for that, although we only ever used it for a lunch time snack - and to maximise the use of the X1 of course! A few people have mentioned the poor quality ice cream in the buffet, in fairness it was more of a water ice than ice cream, and if you bear that in mind it was quite nice - and certainly not as fattening as free ice cream. For the evening meal we chose late sitting knowing that was a bit too late for us, but the early sitting seemed too early especially bearing in mind the return time of some excursions. Once we had experienced the evening 'entertainment' (see below) we were convinced we made the best choice! We always found the food in the MDR to be hot, tasty and varied. There have been many accusations that the food was bland and the meat tough, but we found it quite the opposite. Pasta dishes were of course first class, but the beef, pork, chicken and everything else was always very appetizing. The desserts, although nothing outstanding, were fine - add a dash of ice cream to them and they got even better. Service and the friendliness of the staff were simply second to none. Entertainment OK - the critics have me here. The evening entertainment in the bars was basically piano music or silly fun and games. We were on late sitting so never went to any of the theatre shows as we prefer a G&T before dinner rather than 45 minutes of dancing and acrobats. We mustn't forget there is the difficulty in catering to several languages, and there were plenty of people enjoying what was put on so it must have appealed to some - just not to us. Fortunately we were on late sitting so after a few beers and a couple of bottles of wine (see X1 below) we didn't mind the entertainment too much, especially whilst sipping a cocktail or finishing a bottle of wine; if we'd been on early and had to put up with it all night that would probably been a different matter! X1 Simple - if you want some wine and beer with your food buy it, don't think about it just buy it. It could be used it the buffet and MDR, but be aware that the buffet was rarely open at night - the area turned into a pizzeria and they would not take the X1. So - buffet 12ish to 2.30ish and the MDR during main meal times. Whenever we turned up for the evening meal in the MDR there was a beer and a bottle of red waiting for me and a bottle of white that my mum and DW enjoyed. If we finished a bottle there was no problem having another, even when we were about to leave. On a number of occasions we had a bottle of red, a bottle of white then another white or a rose to take with us. In the buffet area not once did we have any issues with waiters not coming to us knowing we had an X1 as some have said. In fact the waiters everywhere were truly excellent, remembering your name and what you drank even if they had only served you once before. On more than one occasion a waiter in the buffet would come up and say "3 beers Mr Hansell?" without even having to beckon anyone across. No - I didn't tip an extra $/€, they were just great staff. Fantastic value. Ports I won't go into detail about each port as that information is easily available. I will just say that $US and Euros were freely accepted in each country, the port shop in Oman even had prices posted in £UK! If you want cheap - and boy do I mean cheap - booze the port shops at Fujairah were the place to go (bear in mind it may get put away safely for you by ship security). Our itinerary was changed slightly at the last moment. It was deemed too dangerous to go to Yemen, so we went to Jordan (Petra - wow, wow, wow - go there, whatever you need to sell to get there just do it) and Sharm was ruled out due to the accident a few weeks ago, so we went to Sokhna. Our tour to Cairo was moved from Alexandria to Sokhna and it made a big difference; it's a good 90 minutes quicker to get to Cairo from Sokhna than it is from Alexandria. So those last minute changes really suited us, but I imagine if you were really banking on a lazy day or a bit of snorkeling in Sharm your perspective may differ. One thing that did annoy me was that the guides on each excursion always seemed to have something to sell. Now I'm all for free enterprise, but it was at times to the detriment to the commentary. We managed to get right through Cairo to the pyramids without our guide getting on the microphone once - and it's a big city. What could have made it even better? A commentary going through the Suez canal really should have been given. The maps on the TV were often laughable in their lack of detail. More port information for those not going on an excursion. It always seemed overly warm in the buffet area, granted it was a hot and humid part of the world, but so is Panama and I don't remember the buffet area on that ship being quite as hot. Disembarkation This went pretty well, much the same as other lines. Meet in the theatre, file off in groups trying not to stand on other people's feet, search for your luggage and then try to find the right bus. A noticeboard with bus numbers/destinations on would have helped, even better would have been a 'look for bus number xx' note on your disembarking information. It was OK though moving 2000 people is never going to be straightforward Would I sail Costa again? No problem at all, and looking at how good some of their itineraries are I probably will do soon enough. Just wish they had ships with balconies doing the Far East. Read Less

There are contradictory views on the Costa Deliziosa , but ours was one of disappointment.We had lots of interaction with several other nationalities and when we voiced our disappointment everyone of the "serial" cruisers said to us "dont judge cruising by your experience on this ship, this is the worst cruise we have had". The main causes of disappointment among the people who we spoke to were -The food being of a poor general standard and unpredictable. -Customer services were described in the whole spectrum from indifferent through to downright rude. There was a general can't do won't do attitude. However we cannot fault the waiters bar staff and cleaners.We met a journalist from an American magazine [Travel and Leisure ] who said "if you speak English they don't want to know". -There was a lack of information or misleading information particularly about the ports of call, it seems that Costa dont want passengers to go ashore unless it is on one of their trips. -Costa charge 6 euros per person per day for service charge but then they add a further service charge of 15% on purchases of drinks etc. -When we booked our cabin we were told it had a partially obstructed view - there was a life boat out side which we could neither see over under or round. It had dense smoked glass and when you tried to look out it looked like a grey November day at home.We asked to be relocated [we were willing to pay more] we were told that nothing was available but Italian passengers near us were moved. - Customer services refused to credit us with our onboard spend of £200 which was in the advert when we booked. To be honest the list is endless but read the reviews by Colin Short, Robert Todd, Brian Gibbins and Jane Stephens as they had problems similar to ours. Read Less

First let me say we have cruised about 20 times on various lines and have thoroughly enjoyed everyone of them. So, we are not serial moaners and we have never had cause to report a negative review before. This cruise was 18 nights repositioning from Dubai to Savona visiting many ports in the Emirates, Oman, Egypt, Jordan and Italy. Major sightseeing to the Pyramids, Luxor, Petra, Suez Canal, Rome as well as the fabulous Dubai. The Deliziosa is a beautiful ship and we had a very comfortable deck 8 balcony cabin. The cabin ceiling made noisy creaking sounds for a while during the night but we got over that. Our issues with Costa are in our opinion not minor however. The food in the buffet and the dining room was consistently bland, lukewarm and lacking in choice. I would go as far as saying badly cooked. We cannot understand how Costa would want to represent Italian cuisine this way. Even the Pizza and Pasta choice and quality was poor. We knew the drinks were expensive so we organized in advance a J2 all inclusive drinks package at £32(Sterling) per day each. For 18 days, this was a lot of money. We are not big drinkers but we were with friends and do like wine and beer in the lounges in the evening. I can tell you when we tallied it up, our drinks bill would have been even higher without the J2. The huge negative about this is that once on board, the information on the J2 we had been given by Costa in advance, was contradicted, sometimes in a very humiliating way. We were faced with asking again and again for clarification on what we were entitled to. Even the Maitre d wanted to disagree. When we asked the English speaking rep to solve this issue for us, she started by telling us she knew all about it and that what we had been told before we sailed was wrong. However, when she came back to us a day later, she was delighted to tell us we had been correct and that the J2 package included any drinks up to 6.99 euro each and included prosecco. The Deliziosa, we have read, is a "green" ship. This does not excuse the serious lack of effective air conditioning in all areas including the cabin. The excursion choices were great but sometimes you just want to get off the ship for a while and look around. In all our other cruises, info e.g. taxis, dos and don'ts, maps, little bit of history, was supplied in paper form either direct to your cabin or picked up near the gangways. Not on this cruise. One solitary gentleman sat in the atrium each night and the passengers had to queue to speak to him for this port info. Information generally is not easy to obtain. This may be due to the language difficulties and there might have been much more available to the Italian passengers. The entertainment was dire. Repetitive and dour. Childish games. Grand pianos often played by a machine. Classical type singers. Nothing lively and upbeat in the lounges. (We were early sitting so didn't do the disco) We found the crew largely very nice but the service was average. We did however have great service from our dining room waiter and another waiter in the Cafeteria Sugar. Unfortunately we found the officers, aloof and disinterested. Disembarkation was not pleasant. We had red luggage labels and were to meet in the theatre. There were hundreds of red labels and once all gathered, we were told we could get off. There was no crowd management at all so there was loads of shoving and pushing to reach the gangway at midships. Not a pleasant experience. Read Less

Costa Cruise or Costa 'a lot' as indicated on the wed. We booked the cruise via Thomas Cook who we feel manipulated the fact that Costa Cruise who will allow you to book a cruise & flight even though 'no' flights were available & then contact you three days later to say 'sorry' we don't have any flight - so Thomas Cook then offer to construct a package for you, which you end up paying £400 plus more for! We flew with both KLM & Air France. KLM were excellent in terms of service & in flight entertainment as well as meals. Air France were not; with poor service & in particular poor meals. We arrived in Dubai on the 5th April & were transferred to the port, arriving around 7.30 am to embark onto the ship (Costa Deliziosa) @ 8.30 am. At check-in the staff looked bored & provided little in any information on what we were to do or what time we would be boarding the ship - other than give us a 'public health' form to fill in. They also take away your passports, the reason becomes apparent when you leave the ship - the reason why their keep your passport is that you have to clear your bill (either by credit card or cash) before your passport are returned! This we feel speaks volume of the type of people who run Costa - treating all with distain. We embarked @ around 9.30 - again without any information regarding the ship or our cabin or cabin keys, which apparently you have to find yourself & the keys are left in-side the open cabin with your luggage! The ship is lovely - new & very clean. We had a cabin on the '8th' deck which was had very little engine noise - but the lower cabins may not be the same. The cabins have no robes or bathroom condiments such as shampoo, conditioner etc. The meals were average & the drinks were very expensive, as were the excursions. The 'Wed' site indicates that a daily charge of €7/14 per day is charged as a service charge or tip for the cabin boy, cook, cleaners etc, which adds around £110.00 per couple per week to your bill BUT what they don't tell you is that in addition every purchase on the ship i.e. drinks etc. also a service charge applied of a further 15%. We worked out that for the week we paid around £180.00 in mandatory 'tips' to Costa, we would have preferred to give this to the staff direct but the customer service desk were less than interested in our comments. The excursions are very expensive, charging around £50.00 per person (£200.00 for a family of four) to go to the beach @ certain ports - the taxi (for four) charges around £20 to £30. On the visit to Bahrain; Costa fails to tell you that the day you dock (Friday) is a holiday in Bahrain & all the shops are closed! Their only tell you once you have paid for the excursion & then refuse a refund when you complain - we spent 15 min's in Bahrain - nothing was open; no Malls etc! You need to keep an eye on the daily activities & meal times as Costa will change them without notice so when you go to lunch @ 13.30 you will find they have changed the opening times from 13.00 to noon, closing @ 13.00! Disembarkment is a farce, people leave the ship over a three day period, with them milling around the ship with bags, sitting & sleeping as you are trying to enjoy the rest of your holiday. The instructions as boarding are none existent, we sent 10 min's on the process of leaving the ship & 20 min's been told how to fill in the satisfaction survey form, been manipulated to tick the correct boxes by the crew!! If you leave the ship @ 10.30 you will be told to leave your cabin @ 6.00 / 6.30 in the morning! We enjoyed the cruise in spite of Costa 'Lot'. Read Less

Background This was our 4th Costa cruise out of about 30 in total but this time we took our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter for their first cruise. It was good to see some of the things we take for granted through the eyes of first-timers and we were all very pleased with the holiday. The Deliziosa is a nice new ship, rather bright and gaudy in places. We knew what to expect from the food on Costa - excellent pasta and fish, variable quality meat and less than exciting desserts, and it did not disappoint. The buffet weas nothing special but our waiters in the main dining room were excellent, in fact the crew in general were very pleasant and friendly, despite the ongoing problem of multiple languages. Some menu items lose something in the translation (eg slow cooked rib-eye steak = prime rib). Costa may not be the most luxurious of cruise lines but we always admire their ability to cope with the multiple languages, and our family particularly liked the relaxed party atmosphere on board. Embarkation We had already spent a few days in Dubai before the cruise (very nice family apartment in the Dunes Hotel Barsha, near the Mall of the Emirates) and been to Ski Dubai, Aquaventure water park at Atlantis on the Palm, seen the Burj Khalifa and explored several shopping malls and souks. Having booked cruise-only and organised our own flights & hotel 2 of us took all the luggage to the ship by taxi on the first day. Our tickets showed embarkation from 8pm but we had heard from other CC members that we could board from 3pm and this was indeed the case. Arriving back at the port shortly after 3pm we expected a long queue but in fact must have beaten the crowds as we walked straight on board. Cabins were not supposed to be available until 6.30pm but our steward kindly allowed us to leave our hand luggage so that we could explore unencumbered. At 6.30pm we returned to find our Costa cards in the cabin, as usual. The family had the X1 drinks package and got drinks during the afternoon buffet by showing their booking form. As widely reported on CC drinks on Costa are very expensive and at about £10 per day this is an excellent package for anyone who likes a few glasses of wine/beer and was well worth it for them. The only glitch they reported was that some of the staff at the pool bar did not always know whether the buffet was open so whether or not they could get drinks there. So now to the ports of call. A few hours of research really paid off on this cruise, as the maps and information provided by Costa were fairly useless, I would definitely recommend printing out maps from the internet before leaving home if you do not intend to take excursions. Muscat, Oman Immigration cards were given out as we left the ship - the same for all nationalities (2 of our family have Maltese passports and had needed 3 visas each for the UAE, one for each entry, which had been rather a nuisance to organise and cost about 50 pounds per visa). All of the ports on this cruise are large commercial harbours and all provide a free bus to the port gates, but Muscat is the only place where there is anything of interest within walking distance of the drop-off point. It was a pleasant, if hot, walk along the seafront corniche to Muttrah Souk. There are nice gold sunshades by the sea every now and then and the entrance to the Souk is clearly marked on the large gateway (maybe half a mile at most from the drop-off point). There were plenty of taxis available at the port gates offering tours into Muscat itself but we enjoyed just wandering around the Souk for a few hours. The forts at the entrance to Muscat are clearly visible from the ship, as was the huge inscense burner on a nearby hilltop. This is the place to buy Frankincense and perfumes. Fujairah, UAE Having read earlier reviews we had low expectations of Fujairah but in fact quite enjoyed the day. We had considered hiring a car here (and if we visited again probably would as the driving was nowhere near as mad a Dubai and I found several companies that would deliver a car to the port) but this time took the 6 euro Costa shuttle to the Lu Lu hypermarket, quite a pleasant drive and we saw quite a lot of the city - it went along the seafront going and came back a different route via the fort. The hypermarket was large, some things were cheap (granddaughter bought a Blackberry and saved about 60 euros), my only feeling was that the shop should really have paid for the shuttle bus, as there was nothing else in the area. There were several taxi drivers offering 90 minute tours from the hypermarket car park but they only looked like visits to 4 forts, probably not very interesting. We did not see any taxis at the port gates. Abu Dhabi, UAE I had booked a 14 seater minibus over the internet from a company called Majestic Transport from 350 dirhams (about 70 pounds) and through our CC rollcall had made up to 11 people, and then found another 3 on board to join us, so excellent value at 25 dirhams each (about 5 pounds). The free port shuttle here did not drop off at the port gate, as expected, but took us to the Mina Centre, a small shopping mall a couple of miles away. The hop-on-hop-off bus (200 dirhams each) stops here as do some local city buses (I would be tempted to try them if we ever returned). As each shuttle bus arrived it was surrounded by a mob of taxi drivers - the only place on this cruise where we experienced any significant hassle. Unfortunately we were a bit early and our bus was 20 minutes late, finally arriving after a number of phone calls to the company to explain our location, each time assuring us that it was 'right there', while several taxi drivers with smaller vehicles tried to convince us that they were the one we were waiting for - all rather stressful and we were pleased when a bus arrived, the driver assured us he was from Majestic, I showed him the print-out of his boss' s email that we had to give him 350 dirhams at the end of the day and he confirmed that was right. We had absolutely super day, Ahmed, the driver, was most helpful and acted as a guide as well as a driver. First stop was the magnificent Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, a little like the Taj Mahal in shape, really lovely. Abayas were provided for the ladies. Men were allowed in provided they had long trousers - any with shorts were given a white robe. The mosque is about 30 minutes drive out of the city and closes at midday but we just made it and were so pleased that we did. Next Ahmed suggested a drive past the palaces of the Sheik's various wives and relations, which he pointed out, then a visit to the 7* Emirates Palace Hotel. Sadly they did not let us into the hotel as it is now restricted to groups of 5 or less, but we saw it from the outside. Then we drove a short distance to the Heritage Village, an open air museum of life before oil and a small craft market (all free admission) with a stunning white sand beach. From there we spent a couple of hours at the nearby Marina Mall for lunch and visited the tower for fantastic views of the city. It is really a restaurant but just follow the signs to 'Burj Marina' and ask to go up, it was no problem (and free). Last stop was a few minutes on the public beach on the way back to the ship - how we all wished we had brought our swimming costumes, it was so lovely and we could only paddle ! Sadly, the day ended on a slightly sour note when Ahmed told us his boss had 'made a mistake' about the price and it should have been 350 euros (he later tried dollars) not dirhams. I was really upset as I had shown him the printout before we got on the bus and he agreed it, and we had whipped round for a very nice tip for him as he had been so good. Of course we refused to pay any extra and he did not pursue the matter for very long - I suspect this is something they just try on with tourists, I have read about a similar ploy with taxi drivers, so for anyone else visiting please be careful and always get a quote in writing including the currency. We would have thoroughly recommended his firm to other CC members if it had not been for this. But Abu Dhabi was definitely our favourite port of the cruise. For anyone else visiting you would get a good view of the city (including the Emirates Palace and the beaches) by taking the shuttle bus to the Marina Mall - the heritage village is walkable distance from there too. Bahrain We went with low expectations again, as other reviews had said it was dirty, nothing there etc etc and even my cousin who lived there for 15 years was surprised that cruises call there now. She told us that, being a Friday, the souk would not be open in the morning, so we had a lie in and headed off about 11.30am. The only easy way to get into town is to take the 6 euro shuttle bus as it is a very long way (about half an hour in easy traffic). There is also a free shuttle to the port gate (several miles from the ship) and a few taxis were waiting there but sadly they are known for rip-offs and one couple we spoke to paid 26 euros and still did not get to where they wanted. We were pleasantly surprised to arrive in the centre of Manama just opposite the Bab-al-Bahrain gateway, to find thousands of little shops selling everything you could think of - and copies of every designer label under the sun (handbags about 20-25 euros, 'iphones' about 80-100 but not all features work). Some shops were indeed closed for the day, but about 75% were open in the afternoon, at least, so we had more than enough to keep us busy for a few hours. It was not as clean as Dubai or Abu Dhabi but we did not think it was particularly dirty, just a typical middle eastern souk. Dubai Disembarkation The process is a typical Costa easy-going muddle. No other cruise line lets arrivers mingle with leavers for a couple of days over changeover, but we had this in Hong Kong with Costa and again in Dubai and actually it works fine. There is no proper information, you just come and go from the ship as you please from when it docks on Saturday lunchtime until sometime on Sunday night/Monday morning and when you are ready to go - you just go ! Our family had to leave early on the Sunday morning, our own flight was not until the early hours of Monday morning, so we enjoyed a long walk along Dubai creek and around the gold souk, returned to the ship for a final swim, ate dinner (open seating but still the fixed times of 6.15/8.45pm) then got a taxi to the airport about 11pm. Shows Costa excell in language-free shows. We had 2 juggler/magician/acrobat acts - both excellent, just a shame they were on consecutive nights. Productions shows are not really my 'thing' but the 'Delicious' one was actually very good. The other one was something about shapes, we only saw the first 10 minutes, as that was the only night the show was after 2nd seating dinner and we were tired. The last night was one of the resident pianists, Pietro, doing a solo show and he was absolutely amazing - do not miss him ! Conclusion We loved the cruise - probably our best yet with Costa. It is a shame that so many English travellers are consistently disappointed with Costa, we have always enjoyed the difference, but then we love Italian food, don't drink so don't care about the prices, and I quite enjoy trying to understand the announcements in other languages - if things like that would ruin a cruise for you, please go with another line ! We would not mind repeating the itinerary one day as we focused on enjoying the ship and shopping on this trip and probably missed out on some sightseeing in this interesting area. As for the family, they say they love to cruise again and would be happy to do 2 weeks with Costa next time ! Read Less

By the time our cruise was due at the end of April there had been six reviews and to be honest if we had read them before booking we would not have booked at all. Most of the reviews were so negative, however it turned out that you should not believe all you read and it seems some people are just hard to please and like to have a moan anyway! Embarkation was a breeze. We actually arrived at the cruise terminal in Dubai at about 09.30am and embarkation wasn't until 3.30pm but we were allowed to leave our luggage at the ship, after identifying it, and go and spend the day in Dubai shopping as we were told we could return anytime after 3.30pm. So we went straight to the gold souk and did some shopping before returning to the ship at approx. 6.00pm We were able to go straight to our cabin and have a snooze before getting ready to get something to eat and do a bit of exploring. Unfortunately my wife was poorly for most of the week during the cruise, as was I after the first few days, so we did not take advantage of the excursions. The excursions were not cheap though and I don't think there was anything we were really interested in seeing anyway onshore except for Dubai. We just wanted a quiet relaxing break and weren't intending to go on any of the excursions anyway. All the staff were very friendly and helpful contrary to some of the reviews. The only staff (or were they crew?) who did seem stand-offish or even rude by ignoring everyone were the ones walking about in all white uniforms. They walked about and just seemed to ignore everyone and gave me the impression they just wanted to b somewhere else. We also took out the J2 drinks package and would recommend it as it gives great value for money. The food was nice and there was a good selection to suit most tastes. I do think that perhaps it was the case that since the earlier reviews any 'teething problems' have been sorted out. I would recommend this cruise if you can stick the heat! The onboard entertainment was excellent and everyone was encouraged to get involved if they wanted to. Read Less

We arrived on Sunday morning at 8am after a night flight. We could not embark on the ship till around 4.30pm. We sat in the terminal nodding off and walking around as we felt too tired to do anything else. We could have flown early on Sunday morning and would not have had to sit around for hours. When we finally embarked we had to wait another two hours until our cabin was ready and a further 45 minutes until our luggage arrived.Drinks very expensive, beer 4.50 euros. Single spirit measure 6.25 euros and a mixer 2.50 euros + 15% surcharge on top of every drink purchased. Not allowed to purchase duty free spirits on board (you can on P & O at duty free prices). Ship design - very dazzling in places, bit glitzy. Not that many passengers follow the dress code - many wore casual wear on formal nights. We had a balcony cabin on deck 8 which was very comfortable - no complaints there. I had expected the food to be delicious as italian restaurants in England are always a favourite. Food was bland, most of the meat 'braised' and I'm afraid very bland. Despite the novovirus which can happen on ships, no one enforces the use of hand sanitizer on entering restaurants - although it is there! This was our fifth cruise and although I enjoyed Dubai and the other ports of call I was disappointed. The adult swimming pool at the rear of the ship says that children are not allowed to swim there but daily there were children using this pool and no one enforced the rule. I would not recommend this cruise line and have been advised to look at Princess Cruises next. I really fancied a grilled fillet steak for dinner but after a few days I was disenchanted with meat that was "braised". Also there were no vegetables served. If you had prawns they had not been cleaned, they still had their intestine tract! Read Less

We are seasoned cruisers and have been lucky enough to experience many cruises. This cruise appealed to us because we wanted to experience Costa Cruises and with the added bonus of a new ship. Our travel To Dubai Port was from London Heathrow with Royal Brunei Airways and was uneventful and also unworthy of any positive comment. The transfer to the ship was pretty awful and unorganised. I think we have to forgive this because of innovation. we did not use any overnight hotel in Dubai. The Costa Deliziosa was very impressive in appearance and one could tell that the furnishings were all top shelf. Our Embarkation was very smooth and gave one a feeling of security and professionalism. The port and shore excursions were many and varied and if you wanted to pay through the nose for these they were freely available. However if you wanted to do your own thing without being herded and have numbers stuck on you, you could also please yourself. My favourite is: Taxi ! follow that bus.You must remember that the organised tours are provided to earn the company money. The entertainment and facilities were varied and of a good standard, although the thing that I was looking forward to experiencing Formula 1 simulator was broken for the whole cruise. Got to put that down to teething troubles. Our stateroom and cabin service were the best that we have ever had and for that reason alone we would revisit this ship. The dining experience as far as we were concerned left a lot to be desired but that is not to say that the food quality was poor. Our disembarkation went smoothly and was stress free. Overall this cruise was good value and attention to all detail via the purser's office was satisfactory. If I could improve this cruise in any way I would be hard pressed. I had expected quite a few hiccups because this is a new ship but they did not materialise. Full marks to Costa with this new cruiser. Read Less

We have returned home feeling really let down. We have cruised with Princess, Cunard and P&O over the years, all part of the Carnival family, all different,but all excellent. Costa does not come up to their standard at all. The ship was only a few weeks old and the crew were making sure it looked at it's best, cleaning and painting every day we were on board, so much so that some days we were not able to walk on parts of the deck as they had portable scaffold erected to paint. Our stateroom and balcony was very good and was kept very clean as were all parts of the ship. The layout of the self-service Restaurant is very poor with food stations separated by long distances so that you had to pick up food in different parts then look for another part of the same meal by moving to another station, for instance salad at one place then look for tomatoes at another station. Often items had run out and the staff were very slow to replace them. On three separate occasions Liptons English Tea had run out and we were running from one drink station to another to find what we required. On one afternoon we were told there was no more on the ship!!! Food was a big disappointment to all the British and Germans we spoke to and everyone of them had decided they will never cruise with Costa again. The main Restaurant was very crowded, seats too close to each other; the menu was fair, until it arrived and then some of it was inedible. Alhough some area were non-smoking there was a lot more smoking areas than on other ships and consequently smoke drifted across non-smoking areas and being non-smokers we found this quite offensive. All other ships we have been on have laundry rooms on each deck allowing passengers to do their own laundry. The laundry charges on this ship was extremely high e.g. one shirt washed and ironed cost 5 euros. The 4D cinema, roller track, golf simulator and the GT simulator all advertised srongly in the catalogue we found to be at an extra cost. Drinks charges were also extremely high e.g. a small beer 5 euros, coke 2.60 euros, the cheapest wine was 18 euros all of this was plus 15% having already paid 7 euros per day per person which was a service charge and was compulsory. Shuttle buses to the Abu Dhabi mall were charged at 6 euros per person but on arriving on the dock we were told by the local tourist board that the buses were free. After some arguments with staff who insisted that Costa had purchased the use of those buses and refused me a refund. When I threatened to write to Costa on my return I received a refund on my bill the next morning which makes me believe that the buses were free - Costa had not paid as they would not have refunded my money if that were the case. Non-Italian speakers did not receive as much information as Italians. A prime example of this was the fact that on the morning we were leaving the ship we were informed by Virgin to be on the dock by 8.45 a.m. so we were a bit surprised to have someone knocking on the door at 6 a.m. followed by a telephone call at 6.15a.m. to say we should have been out of the stateroom but as no-one had informed us of the time we should have vacated how were we supposed to know. This is just one example of poor communication. We were very surprised to be having a farewell dinner on Thursday evening when we were not leaving the ship until Monday morning although some people were leaving on Sunday. We realised why this was the case because the people who were leaving on Monday appeared to be a nuisance to the Costa staff and treated as if we were intruding. On our last night we were unable to have the table we had enjoyed for the entirety and told we had to sit in another part of the restaurant which meant we were unable to say goodbye to the waiters who had looked after us so well. When we asked the head waiter where they were we were told they had been moved to other duties. We have never experienced anything like this on other ships. We were extremely happy we had only booked a seven-day cruise - we could not have coped with another seven!! Read Less

This was our 2nd time cruising with Costa and we were really looking forward to it as we had a brilliant time on the Serena 2 years ago(our 1st cruise!). It was nice to see more Brits on board and a good mix of Italians, Germans, French and various other Europeans. Cabin: We got our first ever balcony so we were well made up and we got our request of portside. Cabin was fresh and clean as expected from a month old ship and everything in working order. No complaints at all. Evening Dining: As always the waiting staff were excellent. However, we had not been allocated a table so we had to make a trip to see the maitre d to sort this and were given an early slot as we had hoped....however we did not expect to be sat with a Polish couple. They were lovely but coversation was limited to me and my wife talking to the husband and I felt sorry for his wife as she did not speak any English. Costa should not have allowed this - there were 15 Poles on board and they they put us on the same table as 2 of them. They came to the sit down meal only twice! Besides we wanted to share conversation with Brits and share experiences. We were missing our spice and one night they made us chicken curry which was nice(although they left the skin on). The food compared to the Serena was disappointing the rep suggested it could be the sourcing of the food in the middle east is not like the Med. Also no Pistachio ice-cream on demand - very disappointing! Overall, it was okay but not meeting my expectations of Italian cuisine. Our waiters Joneyl and Gerry were ace,however. Self-Service Restaurant: This has been described to a tee by the previous reviewer. Entertainment: We enjoyed the evening shows, however, it seemed towards the end they ran out of acts and cobbled together some shows like the 'Alpha Tours Folk Show' who were the tour guides used by Costa on the excursions - needless to say we didn't bother. More annoyingly was the Entertainment team who were constantly trying to rope you into some activity or other and bless them they were doing their jobs but trying to make me look like Bob Marley is not entertainment in my eyes. My wife got dragged up to play a game at the back end of the cruise in front of a grand audience of about 10 people to play 'Name That Tune' for Italian songs! Brilliant! I'm glad she didn't win as the prize was a Costa bum bag. Mixed bag for entertainment - some excellent shows like the acrobatic gymnast but followed by some lame stuff. Drinks: We saw this coming from last time so we made sure we got the X1 drinks package. You could have wine at lunchtime and evening meal. For £67 a person it was well worth it (wine, water and soft drinks)- better that the J2 that would have cost £225 for all day drinks - useless when you are not on board. At lunch the bar waiters who float were reluctant to come back to you as the service charge is already paid so they won't earn extra. I did see a lady complain as her bar girl didn't come back for ages and she wanted her drink with her food. Very naughty. Great drinks package and if you are willing to use your nouse(pick a different waiter each time), you are quids in apart from my liver... Customer Service: For some reason Costa were at pains to tell us that if your flight was not booked through Costa, you were classed as "Independent Travellers". We received absolutely no information from Costa or Virgin regarding our pick up from the port and transfer to our hotel, however, last time we booked through Virgin Holidays, they sorted everything out for us. The people working on the Customer Service desk were rude and unhelpful and refused to make any phone calls for us. Excursions: There was a wide selection of Costa excursions available, however, they were very over-priced. The Tour Office on board were unwilling to assist with any enquiries regarding the ports of call, shore-maps etc and only became helpful if you wanted to discuss or book Costa excursions. Read Less
