The food and cleaning departments were super but the cruise directors were just horrible. 10 people were left behind in Vienna when a tour guide decided to leave 15 minutes early, guide and cruise directors didnt care at all. Entertainment on the ship was hideous music was a man playing a key board of songs from the 1960s and playing them badly. There were never enough seats in the lounge for people, and the free WiFi only worked in one small spot on the ship so everyone had to stand on top of each other to use it. Our room room smelled of dirty socks and while the cleaning tried hard to clean every surface, the manager of room services told us it was fine. Lastly we paid for a French balcony room only to see another French balcony room abutting ours one foot away every day. They stack there to four Viking boats next to each to save docking fees so all we saw was the boats next to us and at night they travelled to next destination so it was dark. Just the worst! We have been on several Viking River cruises before. Sadly-the Legend is an old, tired, leased ship and is nothing like the Viking owned ships. No aquavit lounge for starters, so no great place to sit outside. No outdoor balcony in our suite-which was really expensive. There’s no service on the rooftop-which is the only outdoor seating. And then there’s the food. The dinners are just not good. I’m not a picky eater-and I haven’t finished 1 meal because they are just not tasty. Breakfast and lunch have been fine. The furniture is worn out and the main lounge is set up like an old cocktail lounge from the 70’s. Viking-shame on you for compromising your standards and proving that your growth is now changing your standards. You leased a substandard ship for your loyal passengers rather than holding off until you had a nice ship available. The cabin had none of the usual Viking electrical outlet choices, so I couldn’t plug in my curling iron! I will say the staff has been very good. The included tours have been good and we’ve had a couple of really fabulous tour guides. Viking should send some secret shoppers on their cruises to see what’s going on and to eat the food. I think the senior management would be shocked if they spent a week on the Legend. Read Less

We have had two ocean cruises on the small motor sailer Winds tar. Outstanding. We expected similar experience from the heavily advertised Viking Danube cruise. This was another low water summer, but we were lucky. We did not have to change ships. We were unlucky in that we were docked three ships abreast turning our stateroom into a dark cave most of the time. I gather this is often the case. Our balcony was not a balcony. It was a sliding window. We had one day of no a/c. We had fumes overpowering us when our neighboring ships exhaust lined up with our intake. Passengers were ill and no one could stay in their staterooms. Another half day, no water. Throughout this, no information disseminated to the passengers who finally had a harsh confrontation with the ships steward. Tours were adequate, with a couple exceptions...biking in Wachau Valley was fabulous and could have been twice as long. Dining was in a dreary room, never outside. Food was good but menu choices repetitive. Passengers were surprisingly underdressed in the evening, many in their shorts and tees from the daytime. Don’t bother taking much in the elegant casual realm. The demographic was quite frail on the whole and the day trips labeled active were only moderate. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we went All out. First class flights And a suite on board. When we arrived at the ship we were very surprised and disappointed. Our ship, the Legend was old and shabby, not at all like the picture on the advertisements and websites . Our suite had stains on the rugs and the furniture. I was shocked when I saw it as our bill for this "luxury" river Cruise was nearly 25K. We were rafted up each night and we could not open our blinds any day we were in port as we often had ships rafted on both sides. To add insult to injury, each time we left the ship we walked through the beautiful ships that we were NOT on. They even had an elevator. All in all I think it was a classic Bait and switch. The Legend should have NOT been sailing since everyone was expecting one of the beautiful ships that's Advertised. Many guests who had travelled on Viking before said this was the worse ship they had been on, that other cruises were much, much better. I felt sad that I had spent so much for so little. I have done other ocean cruises and this is the most money I have ever spent. I deserve a refund, but probably won't even get a. All, even though I gave the cruise a very poor rating. The ports of call were very nice......that's the only positive thing I can say. Read Less

The best part of Vikiing is their marketing. Among the worst problems with our cruise was the rafting up of up to five boats at a location. I did not pay for an interior cabin and looking into another persons bedroom and bathroom is not high on my list of "must sees". Among the stops were the tiny towns of Dörnstein & Melk. Save your shoe leather and energy ...don't waste your time. An additional day in Vienna or Budapest would have been much better. The waitstaff was outstanding in their aim to please and friendliness . Food was excellent . The tour guides were not viking employees and varied from poor to good. The Mercedes buses were comfortable. We arrived a day early and had a great visit and few brews at the Hoffbrauhaus in Munich. Skip, the food there. The oompah music and the beer are beyond delightful. A visit to the Dachau concentration camp, will leave you with an indelible impression of the horrors of the Holocaust. The boat ( not ship) Legend hs been used beyond its useful life. It is, however, well maintained and spotless. We have had many years of cruising experience and the Danube Waltz aboard the Viking Legend was the low point of of our adventures. My comments about our non-functioning toilet will not appear in this review, but the problem was never corrected, despite my daily complaints.   Read Less

Having enjoyed our first Viking cruise, some 6 months earlier (on the River Elbe), we were looking forward to an exciting itinerary from Budapest to Passau. We arrived at the ship and were shown to our expensive cabin with a French Balcony. We were surprised that the curtains were fully drawn (around noon on a sunny day) and immediately flung them open. To our surprise, the view that faced us was the balcony of another river boat (the Viking Freya) little more than 12 inches away! From then on, at every mooring, on every single day of the holiday, part or all of the time was spent with no view other than an adjoining boat. Apparently, this is the norm, with the various boats swapping places every 7 hours to make it 'fair' for all passengers. We would have called the policy, making it 'unfair' for all passengers at some point every day! Now, if you are someone who just uses a cabin for sleeping, then this is no real hardship (excuse the pun). However, we like to spend a fair amount of time in our cabin, (which is why we pay for an expensive one) and the situation made our cabin, completely unusable when adjacent to another cabin or the restaurant (on a couple of occasions) on another ship. Also on a couple of occasions, our boat was sandwiched between two other boats, so everyone suffered at the same time! If you are happy with all this then fine, but remember that the design of the cabins is such that the dressing table mirrors on each boat provide a perfect view from your cabin directly into the toilet of the adjoining ship's cabin AND vice-versa! Without going into too much detail, the sight of of a man on the toilet of his cabin on the adjoining boat made sure that we fully closed the toilet door on every occasion! However, we should not have to do this in our private cabin. This whole experience ruined the cruise for us, despite very much enjoying the excellent itinerary. It goes without saying that the problem never occurred on our earlier River Elbe cruise with the same company. Now on to other matters, where, again compared to our earlier cruise, the food was generally poor. Some chefs have empathy with cooking fish (our preferred choice), but not so on our cruise! We were rarely able to eat the main course and indeed on the main 5 course meal, my wife had a tiny smoked salmon starter and a tiny piece of cheese for the final course, with nothing in-between. However, I managed the soup as well, so had 3 of the 5 courses! Generally, the meat eaters fared better, though at lunch we once had goulash, which turned out to be tough, dry and tasteless (and uneaten!). Interestingly, neither the Maître d', nor any waiter every enquired if there was a problem! Incidentally at least two of the waiters were 'over friendly' trying to 'force' you to drink or eat more. On one occasion, spare desserts were actually served to us and cajoled to eat them despite repeatedly saying no (we just left the table to escape). On a minor point, the white wine was also never cold and changing the subject, the WiFi was never good (even moored in a city) and generally only just usable. You have been warned! P.S. Oh! And don’t get us started on the absolute chaos between disembarkation and boarding the flight home!   Read Less

I was dazzled mesmerized mislead by Viking Cruise lines elaborate advertising campaigns. I truly believed that I was going on a first class river cruise, but instead I felt as if I was on a subpar barge floating down the Danube river. The staff was cold and unfriendly. The food was good, but not great. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, and dinner was very small portions and the bread basket was full of slices of bread the size of a quarter. I love dessert and I was so disappointed in every dessert that they offered. It reminded me of what you would get on a buffet, or in a cafeteria. Our bathroom had a dirty toilet from the previous guest, which was cleaned up immediately. But I think the worst part was the fact that my 75 year old father was forced to pay my room expenses before he and the rest of the bus passengers were allowed to exit there bus at the Munich airport. I was unclear on why they did not just charge my credit card that was on file. And now I have been spending the last month and a half trying to reverse the charges from my father and apply them to my credit card. So far I get the impression that Viking River cruise does not care about their customers once they get your money. Read Less

We went on the December 19-27 cruise from Nuremberg to Vienna on the Viking Legend. This also coincided with one of the worst winter storm in years and many people failed to get their connecting flights and many more had baggage lost. Happily, we did not have those problems. But, upon our arrival in Nuremberg, we were told the ship wasn't there due to ice, which was a lie. It was instead in Regensburg suffering from mechanical difficulties. So, instead of a cruise down the Danube, we got a bussed to various locations while sleeping on the ship. From Regensburg the ship limped to Straubing, not even making it to Passau. We were told every bus trip was "just an hour", also a lie. Finally the Legend made it to Passau but they bussed us to Linz. We seldom were free to have a whole day in port with all the bussing. We were told a team of mechanics flew in to repair the boat in Passau. The next morning we were in Melk and back on schedule, but then the electricity went out during breakfast. In Durnstein we were told the captain was no longer willing to risk our safety with this boat. On Christmas day they offered to bus people into Bratislawa, but many people, weary on the incessant bussing, opted just to stay in Durnstein and chill out. The last two days there was no cruise, but rather we were put up in the Hilton in Vienna while the people working for Viking scrambled to cancel the cruise immediately after our own. The service was good although the meals were nothing special. Our cabin was always impeccable cleaned. The Viking people tried being helpful. What we most resented was that is was glaringly obvious were not being told the whole story. I had to go on this site to see the same ship had problems on the cruise before ours. If they had only been up front it would have been better. But instead they infantilized us and tried herding us endlessly onto busses. We paid for a cruise, not a bus tour. Also, the wireless internet does not work. The Viking people kept saying the satellite was "down", as though we were idiots. If the satellite was "down" (whatever that means, as no satellite had come crashing down to earth), then why did the TV, also running off of satellite, work just fine. The router was horribly configured and no one knew how to fix it and kept talking to IT guys in Basel. I'm not asking for a refund as they did take us to all the ports described, but I will never, ever consider Viking River Cruises again. EVER. Read Less

Oh, no - cruise was slated for an Amsterdam-Budapest voyage. Had to be rerouted to Rotterdam as a sailing event that takes place every year in Amsterdam consumed all mooring spaces. Something the cruise line failed to let anyone know at the time of booking. A coach trip was not anything we had signed up for - thus, why we choose cruising. On arrival a mediocre dinner was served, which began two weeks of the best meals being purchased off the ship. Quite a disappointment. To compound, the food quality, was the attitude of servers. Seemed most irritated that we were there most of the time. Very regimented, if you asked for 1 egg in morning, you were told, "only do 2 egg orders". Coffee was slow in coming with regularity, so asked for a carafe of coffee for table, told "we don't do that, we serve". Of course, that was only every 15 min or so they "served". Which you would have to find them or flag them down. In there defense, I would say they were understaffed. Cabins were kept clean, wonderful hot water and pressure. No complaints. Beds on the other had were miserable. When stated after first night that we were uncomfortable, were told "all beds on ship the same, nothing can be done". I pointed out their 24 satisfaction policy, and the "hotel manager" said "well it is because the ship is new and the mattresses are not broke in",surely they did not buy the mattresses with that in mind. I suggested they put 4 duvets across our bed with sheet on top, they did and it was better, never really comfortable. One reason being they only have linens in twin for bed, even though it is a king size variation. So every night we got caught up in the sheets, my husband said it was like camping. Not something you would expect in "luxury" cruising. Two of the things I love about cruising - good food and a comfortable bed. Never been disappointed before. This cruise was not the best. Europe, though, is still beautiful and we loved that. Read Less
