Enjoyed every aspect of our Rhine cruise last year and was keen to experience The Danube. I wouldn’t have chosen another company as all aspects of our previous cruising experience were excellent. We wee not disappointed this year! The customer care Viking offers is second to none. Everything ran smoothly from the time we booked until the time our cruise ended. All the crew are pleasant and efficient and appear to enjoy their work which is a great reflection on the company. The food was delicious with a good range of choices and all beautifully presented and served. The accommodation is great you are so well looked after in an unfussy seemingly effortless way. The excursions took us to places of interest and well informed guides were able to provide you with facts and information you needed. There was a range of entertainment on offer . My only criticism would be that some of the singers needed a microphone. Well done Viking Read Less

We have wanted to try a river cruise for some time and we also wanted to experience a Strauss concert. This cruise satisfied both needs. The off boat tours were all amazing, very well organised and the local guides were exceptional. The lady who was Program Director was very good she was very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the food and service was extremely good. There was plenty of choice and more than enough quantity. The evening entertainment on board was better than expected and we enjoyed a dance most evenings. Meeting other nationalities was both interesting and entertaining. The attention to detail and information given both before and during the cruise was very good. The daily itineraries given each day was most helpful and made sure we were in the right place at the right time. We are definitely considering another river cruise and it would definitely be a Viking one. Read Less

Our first river cruise was delightful. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly helpful staff made it enjoyable. The food was enjoyable with the menu reflecting the countries that we were passing through as well as offering other choices plus a standard menu. The evening meals were normally at 7.00p.m. with one sitting and plenty of time to chat over the provided glass of wine. Dress was smart casual with the emphasis on casual. I only noticed one person wearing a jacket. Entertainment was limited. The pianist was good and each evening there was a local "speciality act" including opera or folk. The included trips were interesting with plenty of walking. Several of the cities had many cobbled streets and we were glad of our sure footed shoes. Some of the trips also had a significant number of steps so it is worth enquiring about this before hand if you have difficulty walking as the older buildings tended not to have disabled access. Most cities had a charge for using the rest rooms "Pay to Pee" which varied from 50 Euro cents to a Euro so make sure you have some coins as not all had a person to give change. Even McDonalds had a 50 cent entry machine. The ship occasionally docked outside town and then shuttle buses were freely provided. Most towns were busy and the ship often docked alongside other hotel boats so the view from the cabin could disappear. Read Less

We had no previous experiences on a Cruise or River Boat Cruises. This was our anniversary. We planned a great deal before venturing out. The Cruise line surprised us by noting that our cabin was upgraded to a suite. We enjoyed the accommodations, were excellent. Ship was very well kept and clean with a very friendly staff. Our house keeper was always available to us and look to please at every moment and time. Dining was very good. The seating was new to us. We enjoyed meeting different people from different cultures and lands. The options for dine was more than adequate and we enjoyed the meals very much. There was questions about the lunch menus. These were more then adequate and there were options off the main menus. Ports, shore excursions and guided tours were very knowledgeable informational and historical. However we would have liked more time to look at museum exhibits. There were two that standout, Terezin, Czech Republic and Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria. OVER ALL A WONDERFUL TRIP AND EXPERIENCE. Would do It again. Read Less

We loved the historical sites experienced in the wonderful free and optional tours of the itinerary selected by the designers of the cruise. Our selection of the excursions available provided excellent activities for us commensurate with our age (elderly) and physical capabilities. The size of the optional groups (and even of the entire group aboard ship) was small and not uncomfortably overwhelming as we encountered aboard ocean cruise ships. The crew and workers aboard the Legend were all dedicated to providing their guests with optimum experiences. We noted that very quickly the staff on board began to remember our names--and we theirs. The open seating at the meals allowed us to circulate among the other passengers aboard so that we became familiar with many others. It was a congenial group overall. The food aboard was wonderful offering at each meal a buffet of several new options and a menu of fare that could be prepared to order. So far, the best cruise taken of our three thus far! Read Less

I've always wanted to take a Viking River Cruise and was finally able to check it off my bucket list this September. I'd heard many great things about them and wasn't disappointed. The service was impeccable, the food delicious, the cabin extremely comfortable. There was always a snack available (a selection of coffees and teas from the beverage station, fresh fruit, fresh cookies) and there was always something going on. The nightly entertainment was pleasant, the selection on the television varied (not that we watched much). I loved the policy of unassigned seating, which gave you a chance to meet other cruisers. We did meet a great couple and had most of our meals together, with a revolving cast of characters each meal. Although we didn't sign on for any of the "special" (additional cost) land tours, all of the tours except one (in Passau) were wonderful and told you a great deal about the port. I would highly recommend this or any Viking River Cruise. The Danube was at historic lows and there was the fear that we might not be able to cruise to each of the ports (Passau, Linz, Krems, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest), they cut short our stop in Bratislava to ensure we could cruise to Budapest because of low water levels. The staff was fantastic and personable and would do anything to enhance your cruise experience. It was a bit expensive but I would definitely go again for a special occasion. Read Less

My mom likes to take her 3 "girls" (all in our 50's) on a trip each summer. This time she picked a doozy. We did the 7 night Danube Waltz with the 4 night pre-cruise extension (Munich and Salzburg). The hotels were well located, and the tours were good. It was nice to have some time to get over jet lag before boarding. Embarkation (for us) went smoothly - we pretty much just walked on, got our keys, and that was it. The ship was docked quite a way outside of Passau, and an afternoon shower meant those arriving late had to literally wade through a deep, muddy puddle to get to the ship. The ship moved in to an in town dock later that evening. That was very odd. I was surprised at how casual the ship was. My sister asked if there was a dress code for evenings, and was told no, and then "as long as you're wearing something!" Many, including me, wore shorts to the dining room many nights (it did get warm by the kitchen). Dining staff was wonderful - so cheerful all the time! Food was decent (a bit hit or miss sometimes), but besides some regional specialties there were always chicken, steak, and fish. Wine poured freely! Sodas as well. Wifi was also included, although it wasn't speedy. My DH and I kept up well via Facebook messenger and email. My sister was a bit frustrated trying to use Facetime (don't), and iMessage (often took a while), and downloading videos of her grandkids (not recommended, but I suppose it was worth it to her). The ship was compact, nicely kept, the cabins a bit on the small size (even compared to ocean cruises). We had our beds separated, which didn't help, I'm sure. I found the beds a bit hard and narrow, but after all that walking daily, I still managed to sleep well enough. We had a "french balcony" on the main level. French balcony apparently means big window (almost, but not quite, floor to ceiling) and a rail to lean on. The cabin was just a couple feet above the waterline, which made for very nice cruising, the few times we cruised during the day. There are cabins below which have small widows just above the waterline. I don't think those would appeal to me at all. The cabins one floor up wouldn't be as close to the water, plus would have the sundeck (and associated chair moving) above, which also wouldn't appeal to me, so I think we chose well. We went through 10 locks, so of course we were on the top deck for the first one (and the last, which was very deep). One side of the ship was always right up against the edge of the lock. If you were on that side, you felt you could just step over the rail.If you were in the cabin, it would get very dark as the ship sank with the water level. Of course if you took the Budapest to Passau cruise, you'd be rising with the water. Most of the tour guides for the included tours were good (one in Munich was dreadful, but our guide for Neuschwanstein more than made up for him). All guides spoke English well, and the headsets were great. We ended up taking the "easy" tours much of the time, since one sister had just injured her knee. It's nice to know they have that option, although you may miss a few things that require more steps/cobblestones/standing. We took a few extra tours (Spanish Riding school in Vienna, a home hosted visit). I found them a good break from cathedrals, churches, and castles (we still saw plenty of those!) I really love that they hand you water whenever you leave the ship, and have it available in the room (no charge). They also have umbrellas available if needed. The buses were comfortable, and never overcrowded. There were some "enrichment" activities, including making strudel, some talks, tours of the tiny galley and even tinier bridge. There were some singers one night, but the less said about them, the better. Ouch. Overall, an excellent experience. As for value for money, um, it wasn't cheap - I'm glad Mom paid! Read Less

We booked this cruise for it's Itinerary. Especially enjoyed the cities visited and the scenic countryside. The Viking staff was professional, accommodating, efficient, but not intrusive. The cruise director, as well as, all the staff, kept us informed of all procedures and processes. We liked the basic all in one pricing structure. The boat was very clean and easy to navigate. An older boat, the cabin was still well appointed, comfortable and very pleasant. Transfers from airport, to and from excursions were excellent and extremely well organized. The guides for the shore excursions were knowledgeable and friendly. The tour coaches were modern and clean, comfortable with good views. Food choices were varied and plentiful. We really liked the menu items suggested by the region visited. By the nature of the cruise the entertainment was limited, but good quality, fun and relaxing. We would definitely recommend Viking river cruises and plan to book in the future. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because we wanted to see a part of Europe we had never seen before and to also celebrate our 25 year anniversary. Viking was a dream vacation we had saved for and we were not disappointed at all! We also were lucky enough to meet and make friends with a Federal Judge on board with us who was allowed by the captain to renew our vows in the ships library, and which the crew also helped by creating a beautiful area for us, plus our guest services attendant surprised me by making a bouquet of roses for me, plus surprising us with a cake, towel swans and hearts with balloons and champagne waiting for us in our room, plus the events coordinator (who sings quite well), dedicated a song for us too! Viking cruises will be the only cruise line I will use again in the future! Read Less

Nearly everything was great. The cabin was a little too small, the bathroom shower had the tendency of wetting all the floor of the bathroom. The crew did a superior job of keeping it clean and only worked when we were away. The ship was ably crewed and the personnel was friendly and competent. Dining was excellent, the wine selection was acceptable. Board entertainment was above average for such a small ship. Excursions were above average with practically no idle time. Embarkation and disembarkation was easy and pleasant. Complimentary bottled water and umbrellas were always available. Unlimited free coffee, tea and snacks were an added bonus. It was impossible to get access to an aspirin while on navigation. No children traveled with us. The cruise was not for children, most of the passengers were seniors including my wife and I. We definitely will cruise with one of your ships next year, probably we will try a sea cruise. Practically everything was included, avoiding the customary nickel and diming of most cruises. David, the entertainment officer deserves a special applause. Read Less

I felt the crew did go out of their way to take care of us. We enjoyed our trip so much we have booked another river cruise for 2019. Everyday getting on and off boat was easy. Where boat docked it would of been easy to just go for a walk or sightseeing on your own. We elected to do as many group activities as possible and were never disappointed. The tour guides on shore gave us many personal experiences of the area we were in. it would of been nice to have an exercise area but no facilities at all. The language spoken by all employees and tour guides was very good English. We hit a week of perfect weather which made trip even better. Read Less

The Abbey with the Apricot Snapps was amazingly beautiful and only Viking tourists were present. The daily trips were wonderful from the timing to the bus drivers to what we saw. We did some extras and the Wine Garden in Vienna was our best trip. We didnthe Prestay in Munich and Saltzburg. Our hotels were great as was the Neuwienstein Castle and the Sound If Music day. We met some amazing people and learned so much from the excursions led by educated and informed guides. The dining experience was both visually and gastronomically pleasing, and we grew fond of the cheerful and attentive staff. We always felt well cared for and found answers to our questions at the front desk. The cabins were kept immaculate and well stocked with towels and bath products. We enjoyed the lectures and informative meetings in the lounge, especially the Mozart lecture before the concert in Vienna. The lecture on the history of the Danube along with a slide show was fascinating. We left the ship with rich memories and new knowledge. I think of the cruise every day and am eager to cruise again! We chose the Danube Waltz Cruise because it sailed through a part of Europe we had never seen. Also, because of the casual dress code and and lesser number of passengers on a river boat.We enjoyed the superb accommodation and excellent service provided by Viking. Our stateroom on the main deck was comfortable and the house keeping was meticulous. We had the daily schedule placed on our bed every evening. It gave us the history of the places we will visit and details of optional activities. This was very helpful . Viking did a good job of arranging trained English speaking guides. We enjoyed the daily included tours. We kept the afternoon to ourselves for a short nap and the a walk to explore the place in our own . We had choices for our meals and the service was first rate. We also got to dine with a limited number of people and made a few cruise buddies! Viking staff were helpful and courteous at all times. We traveled Viking several years ago on the Rhine, which was satisfactory but not over whelming. The itinerary and our familiarity with Viking, its ships.and on-board experience was determinative in returning to Viking. Traveling with another couple we determined to allow Viking to do it all this trip. We elected to extend in Prague (presailing) and Budapest (post sailing) Once we left the luggage with Luftansa, we were guided throughout by Viking's fine staff. Greeted at each hotel and ship board by the friendly Viking staff members, we were able to enjoy the scheduled sights and events without concern. The associated hotels (The Augustine in Prague and The Sofitel in Budapest) Viking booked us into could not have been more pleasant. The Viking concierge staff maintained at each hotel was always available to assist in discovering the local sites and eateries. Both Prague and Budapest are not to be missed. I would highly recommend and extension in each. Viking's booking staff's suggestions as to shore and city excursions were on point in each instance. Prior to departure I had researched Viking Legend and was somewhat disappointed it was one of the older vessels in the Viking fleet. On boarding we found it staffed by an incredibly solicitous staff and comfortable in both the staterooms and common areas. In Vienna I had the opportunity to board Viking Baldar, and in comparison would take the understated traditional elegance of Legend over one of the newer Longships. Legend's traditional wood interior makes it welcoming and charming. The Cruise Director, David Morgan, was brilliant, keeping us informed and entertained throughout . The dinning staff could not have been better. Their oft repeated mantra being they were there solely to make your vacation memorable, and they did!. The cabin (third deck), as to be expected was small but well laid out, functional in all respects and always clean. It seemed as soon as you left your cabin then the hospitality staff would enter to clean or tidy The sail from Passua to Vienna was incredibly picturesque, and Legend's night entry to Budapest was breathtaking. High points? The entire trip was a high point, but we particularly enjoyed our extended stays in Prague and Budapest; the excursion to Cesky Krumlov; time on our own in Pasua and Kremes and the first sight of Budapest at night. I would unreservedly recommend this cruise to anyone, and to those who value traditional ships, I'd likewise recommend Legend. Viking has grown and improved since our first river sail with them. This cruise was enjoyable from beginning to end. The excursions were well thought out and not rushed; The tour guides were (with one exception ins Vienna) personable and informative; and on this trip there was ample time in most ports-of-call to allow some exploration on your own. Viking now has free flowing wine, soft drinks and beer offered at dinner and lunch, and much appreciated improvement over our previous Rhine experience. After our first experience with Viking I was skeptical; but no longer. I'll be happy and look forward to cruising Viking again. Read Less

We decided on the Viking Danube Waltz River Cruise for our 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration because of it's all inclusiveness/little planning on our part appeal. We have never been outside of the United States except for a tropical Disney Cruise. We were dreading the long flights since we don't even like 3 hours flights within the states, but we survived. We toured from Passau to Budapest with most stops in Austria. We signed up for all of the included tours and thoroughly enjoyed them all . . . knowledgeable and easy to understand guides and having the headsets was great. I could hang back to take pictures and still hear what was going on ahead of me and catch up. The food on the ship was excellent and our servers very attentive. There was a buffet at breakfast and lunch as well as the choice to order off of a menu. I enjoyed an omelet prepared to my liking every morning and a delicious blueberry muffin - both on the buffet. Ordering from the menu at lunch and dinner is a gourmet meal experience. Several courses, small portions and inviting presentations. Most everything was delicious. Unless you want specialty beers, wine or mixed drinks, no need to upgrade your beverage package . . . you get endless wine and beer. We don't drink so it would be nice to be able to pay a little less to not have that benefit. The couple we sat with for most dinners each drank at least 3 glasses of wine with their meal . . . they were getting more bang for the buck ;) We had a French Balcony room which was perfect. It was too chilly to be sitting out on a Veranda in October. Between the drawers and closet, we had plenty of room to store all of our things with room under the bed to store our empty suitcases. It was as if an elf was cleaning it as we seldom actually saw our maid. The Viking Legend and others like it have been retired so this may no longer be an issue, but the shower curtain was difficult to keep from allowing water to escape . . . that's really my only complaint about the room. I think the showers have glass doors in the Longships they are sailing now. It seemed most people on our cruise were from the states and around our age or older. We were 59 and 61 at the time. I think I saw one girl about 11 traveling with her mother . . . they were the young folk on the ship, but seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. As I'm writing this review of our cruise last year, we've just booked another . . . the Rhine Getaway in July. So, that should tell you that we had a great time and are ready for another European adventure less than a year later. I highly recommend taking a Viking Cruise. And get in on a 2 for 1 package . . .I notice people paying much more than we paid . . . so unnecessary. Read Less

Loved everything about it. Great cabin, excellent services. Clean, food outstanding. Love how they serve regional dishes at different destinations. This time, we didn't do the formal dinners/dining rooms. We did the buffet so we could get a taste of everything! LOVE the smaller, more intimate ships. Don't want those "floating cities." Once you go with Viking cruises, River or Ocean, you'll be spoiled and won't want any other line. Also, at least one excursion in each port paid, too! Luxurious linens and towels! Heated bathroom floors! I've been on over 20 cruises. All different lines and itinerary. Nothing else compares! We got our air/transfers through Viking and it couldn't be anymore seamless transitions. And, the busses were so new they were removing plastic covers from the seats! The busses have toilets. What more could you ask for? Again, you cannot possibly go wrong with Viking. Can you tell, VIKING CRUISES are the BEST. Read Less
