Although we have traveled to Europe several times, the Danube Waltz cruise on the Viking Legend was the most fun and relaxing trip we have taken recently. Our favorite stop was Salzburg, where coffee and a pastry at Furst's was simply wonderful. The tour offered excellent photo opportunities, but the time in Salzburg seemed so short. The Melk Abbey tour was awe inspiring ... it was amazing to see the work of Immanuel Kant. The beautiful frescoes were breathtaking. The Vienna tour seemed rather hectic, but we did have an opportunity for a brief visit to the Art Nouveau Museum to see the Gustave Klimt exhibit. We had the pleasure of attending the Mozart Strauss concert in Vienna. The acoustics were amazing and the performance was wonderful. The Viking staff moved patrons to and from the venue in a quick and orderly manner. There were no long lines or waiting for transportation. It was as we were heading to Bratislava that we learned we would be unable to cruise all the way to Budapest due to low water levels on the Danube. An adjustment was made to spend more time in Bratislava. Although we were disappointed initially, we loved spending time in Bratislava, enjoying the shops and outdoor markets. Viking tried to make the best of the situation by providing excellent coach service to Budapest. The travel time reduced the amount of time to visit Budapest, and we were unable to visit shops we had patronized before. There was, however, a lovely lunch at The Spoon on the Danube. We sadly left the Viking Legend, but the disembarkation was extremely well organized ... luggage was removed like magic. The food and service aboard the Viking Legend was excellent. There were many choices for even the most particular diner, and the staff made every effort to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Chef Michael was present during most meals. We wish there had been more time to explore these exceptional stops on the cruise, more time to sit and breathe in the atmosphere with a glass of wine, listening to music ... or quietly reading. We will cherish these memories forever ... this is a very special way to travel, to relax, to meet new friends, to laugh and to make memories that will last a lifetime. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we were very pleased. The staff could not have been more pleasant and responsive..everyone was very friendly and helpful. The Cruise Director David Morgan, was very charming as well as conscientious. The food was outstanding...portions were not gigantic, which was good! The buffets were excellent for breakfast and lunch. The tours were interesting and well organized..and the ear pieces made sure you could hear the guides. The cabin, though small, was very well appointed with many places for storage, comfortable bedding, thick towels and upscale amenities. The entertainment at night was not the caliber of the big ships, but much more appropriate for this kind of cruise. And there were lectures about the ports visited, the locks, the boat itself, the Danube etc. We met many very nice people. All in all, a very positive experience! Read Less

What a wonderful experience. We had taken a couple of 'big boat' cruises previously, but this smaller ship met our needs perfectly. I have MS and have become somewhat disabled over time, but the size of this ship was MUCH better for me. Cruise Director David Morgan did a splendid job of taking extra care to meet my needs while enhancing my enjoyment. I can't possibly thank him enough for all the thought he put into his plans for me. My wife went on most port excursions, and I did so as well, although I did so a bit differently. I was able to see the majestic sights, but not on extended walking tours. Being able to embark and disembark in only seconds definitely beats the alternative we experienced previously. Having a daily informational sheet left in our room the night before clarified all facets and activities for the next day's destination. Over the term of the cruise, we became familiar with all the staff along with numerous other passengers. The food was very good and incorporated regional tastes and varieties given the different locations we passed through. Each night's entertainment in the lounge area was quite enjoyable and appropriately sized for the limited amount of space available. I tried to find unfavorable issues and circumstances, but the immensely supportive staff and crew made us feel quite comfortable at ALL times. Thank you! Read Less

I call it casual elegance and the staff left no stone unturned. Our every question and need was met with patience and a smile The food was a culinary delight. We cruised at night which meant early morning docking allowing us to begin our day sightseeing. Many land trips are included in the price..a real plus. Communication re: side trips were announced the first evening and one could sign up for trips for the whole week...another plus. Evening entertainment was fun and a wonderful pianist played during cocktail hour. Read Less

This was our second Viking river cruise and we were not disappointed, everything was pretty much perfect. The ship is not one of the new longships but we found it to be very comfortable. It always looked clean and tidy. There was plenty of seating on the top deck for everyone to see the views. The programme director, Vlad, was super efficient and kept everyone informed and organised. The trips out run without fault. Coaches are waiting every morning and you get an allocation group for the tour. All the staff without exception are really friendly and can't do enough to help you. We were lucky to get 2 excellent waiters In the dining room and we managed to sit in their area every evening. We took a couple of optional tours and they were very good. All the guides are extremely knowledgeable and most use a touch of humour to add to the details. Food was excellent and you could really just eat all day long, I found discipline is needed!! We knew that there would not be 'entertainment' as such on the ship but there was couple of evenings with local dancing and singing that included the audience when possible and also a quiz one night- we was robbed of our victory!? The disembarkation is highly organised and it all ticks over without a hitch. Overall it was a wonderful cruise and I would definitely book again. Read Less

I will be telling my friends and my husband and I will be going on more cruise with you,we don't do the big ships. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We started with a pre-cruise stay in Prague at the Hilton-Prague (beautiful hotel). Pre-booked two city tours (a walking/boat/dinner tour and a food tour the next day). Both took us to different areas of this fascinating city. Then it was off to Passau, Germany and the Legend on the Danube River. Wonderful trip visiting fascinating cities, beautiful churches, countryside and historic sites. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and clued us in to the real Von Trapp family history in Salzburg. Wish we had more time to spend in many of the places. Thank goodness for a/c in the hotel and on the Legend, as Europe was experiencing a drought and heat wave. Delicious food, wonderful service, friendly staff and--best of all--we didn't have to pack and unpack for one whole week! How good is that! Read Less

This was our first time on a river cruise, after 4 ocean cruises, and we could not be more thrilled with how it went. We chose Viking because of the itinerary, but everything about this trip exceeded our expectations. The ship was great, the crew was outstanding, the food was top-notch, the shore excursions were interesting and well-organized, and our fellow travelers were, for the most part, excellent company. I would not hesitate to travel with Viking again. We were in cabin 300, French Balcony. Sure, it's not huge, but you're on a ship. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of storage, and the climate controls worked properly. Bathroom also quite small, but it served its purpose. We had Viking arrange our air travel, and it all came off without a hitch. They had a very efficient team at the Budapest Airport, and we were on a shuttle for the ship less than 15 minutes after gathering our luggage. We were on the ship before 10, and many folks from the previous trip were still departing. They took care of our luggage while we headed out to see the city. We found the food on board to be excellent. The chef and his team did a great job, no detail was overlooked, and special orders were met with a smile. The ports-of-call were the main reason for selecting this voyage, so we were thrilled by our time on shore. Each tour guide we had was knowledgeable, fluent in English, and full of little tidbits of local information. The walking, for us, was never arduous, although each day that involved a walking tour had a leisurely group for those who wanted to move at a slower pace. The only thing we would do differently would be to do the Schonbrunn Palace excursion (optional while in Vienna) on our own. Figuring out the Metro wouldn't be that hard, and you can save about 50 Euros. We had local entertainment on 3 of the evenings, singers and folk dancers, that were a lot of fun. They got the audience involved whenever they could. The Program Director, David Morgan, was phenomenal. He remained completely unflappable while dealing with some high-maintenance tourists. A true professional. Every staff member we encountered, from our chamber maid to the waiters to the bartenders, was friendly and helpful. If you didn't take the waiter's recommendation for dessert, he brought it to you anyway, along with what you ordered. One of our fears was that we would be, at 57 & 54, the "kids" of the trip. While we were certainly below the median age, there were enough others in our age range that we had no problem getting to know people at a similar stage in their lives. This was a wonderful experience that I would highly recommend. Viking is, based on this cruise, a first-class organization. Read Less

We sailed on the Legend from Passau in July and found every aspect of our holiday excellent. The ship was one of the older ones in the fleet, but we found it well presented and it had all the facilities we wanted. We had not sought a balcony, and would not do so, since there was plenty of room on the full-length sun deck. The itinerary was excellent - sailings being timed to optimise the time at the stop-overs. Going down stream, the night cruising was at low throttle and quiet. Obviously, Viking had managed to obtain the best of the city-centre mooring locations. Throughout our holiday, the crew were excellent- efficient and professional, yet always having time for a little chat or banter. Their great personal qualities were the stand-out memory of our holiday. On shore excursions were all good to excellent, though I think those who went to the optional (expensive) Mozart recital had poor value. So good that we have already booked for next year. HINT - location of stateroom on boat is more important than facilities such as balcony etc Backroom staff deserve praise, since everything worked well, but we largely saw just the dining room staff. A musician played in the lounge each night, and two nights when local entertainers performed were enjoyable. Nothing much to find fault with, at all. Read Less

This was our first experience of river cruising but wish we had done it earlier. The crew were wonderful and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a wonderful time. The ship was the perfect size not too many people on board. We weren't looking forward to having to share a table for meals but the atmosphere was such that it did enhance the experience meeting different people ever day it was abonus that everyone on the ship with the exception of the captain spoke English. The room we had was comfortable not huge but we didn't go on a cruise to spend all day in our cabin, having a french balcony was good being able to see the world go by.there were occasions when other boats were moored alongside us but that did not occur too often and we had been warned about that in the brochures and did't spoil our enjoyment. There were excursions every day which were well organised and interesting with usually some free time to do some exploring on your own, the guides were informative and friendly, and the transportation was comfortable and bottled water was supplied. The food was well prepared with sufficient options available, plus the staff were always willing to come up with options if you had a problem with anything. Drinks were supplied with the meals which was sufficient for us, there was a drinks station with tea and coffee. The whole experience was wonderful and we would love to take another one. The only slight problem was the journey home the bus taking us back to the airport didn't appear to know where we were going and we were also disapointed to find that we weren't seated together bon our flight. We had two nights in a hotel in Budapest before going to the ship which was very good although the hotel was very busy especially at breakfast. The Viking staff was very helpful at the hotel. This was our fifth Viking River Cruise and one of the best. The crew were extremely friendly, like a big happy family. The cabin was comfortable and very clean, our steward was always very polite. The dining room crew were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. My husband is lactose intolerant and there was always milk available for him. Something we have trouble to get on other holidays and hotels. We were even given milk to have in our cabin to sue when making hot drinks from the landing. The cookies were great too!! The cruise Director was informative and helpful. Some of the trips were a bit rushed especially in Vienna and the evening entertainment was nothing special on board. We have enjoyed all our Viking River Cruises but thought this one was the best. It was such a happy ship and the crew provided an excellent service. We have already booked to go on the Douro next year. Read Less

This was my first river cruise, based on my wife's recommendation, she did the Moscow to St. Petersburg cruise last year with a friend. From the moment we boarded on the first day to reluctantly leaving on the last day we received 5 star treatment, nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, the food was tasty and well presented (I'm a fussy eater) and gave you a flavour, pun intended, of the area being visited. The evening entertainment was excellent. Apart from the overall package, a couple of things struck me as being a nice touch, every time you left the ship you were given a bottle of cold water also, as one who uses a walking stick, I appreciated the fact that each walking tour had an "easy walking" group that went at a more leisurely pace and avoided the steeper routes. The ship was not one of the new longships but it did not detract from the overall feeling of being on an elegant cruise. I would thoroughly recommend a Viking river cruise for a relaxing holiday. Ours was a travel group of 7 adults, who took 3 double cabins and a single cabin. 3 of us had been on Viking cruises in the past; 4 were new to river cruising. All seemed to have a wonderful time during the entire trip. Cabin Staff was mostly from Eastern Europe (Romania), but we also had a sprinkling of Filipino and other European countries. All spoke very good English and German. The Cruise Director, David, was from the UK and provided excellent service and background lectures to each of our stops. We were well taken care of, in the tradition of Viking service. Besides the main part of the cruise, a subset of us paid for and spent a few extra days in Munich (NOT part of the cruise) to get acclimated to time zones. And we further supplemented our stay by spending 3 extra days in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, an ancient medieval town about 1 hours train ride from Munich. Highly recommended stop at Rothenburg, either on your own or as a part of the excursions on other Viking venues. Cruise itself was well run. A special treat was the ship's chef taking a large group of us to the local farmer's market to pick up the produce that would become part of nightly dinner. He toured us around to his favorite cheese shop; fruits and veggies; and sausage stalls. We even were treated to a round of very nice German Weiss Wine. Favorite stop would be Vienna, where we were shown where to buy a local chocolate delicacy, which translated into English was "Mozart Cookies/Balls" - marzipan dipped in rich chocolate. Very fine with Viennese Coffee and/or strudel. Had lunch in an 800 year old monastery, too. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we went All out. First class flights And a suite on board. When we arrived at the ship we were very surprised and disappointed. Our ship, the Legend was old and shabby, not at all like the picture on the advertisements and websites . Our suite had stains on the rugs and the furniture. I was shocked when I saw it as our bill for this "luxury" river Cruise was nearly 25K. We were rafted up each night and we could not open our blinds any day we were in port as we often had ships rafted on both sides. To add insult to injury, each time we left the ship we walked through the beautiful ships that we were NOT on. They even had an elevator. All in all I think it was a classic Bait and switch. The Legend should have NOT been sailing since everyone was expecting one of the beautiful ships that's Advertised. Many guests who had travelled on Viking before said this was the worse ship they had been on, that other cruises were much, much better. I felt sad that I had spent so much for so little. I have done other ocean cruises and this is the most money I have ever spent. I deserve a refund, but probably won't even get a. All, even though I gave the cruise a very poor rating. The ports of call were very nice......that's the only positive thing I can say. Read Less

Just enough entertainment, excellent food. But we were very unhappy in Prague; the food was inedible, we were sick from it , my cellphone was taken right out of the front of my sweatshirt pocket by a thief, all photos lost, there was no police presence. Tried to get help, uncooperative people, unfriendly people; bad experience! All tour guiders were wonderful. Thank you David and your great staff! We would take another Viking cruise, bur are concerned about the European atmosphere now. Also, pricy. Any review must mention the meals. Without exception they were all fantastic, and reflected the cuisuine of each country that we passed through. Each day we woke up in a different town, city, or country, with an organised tour. As the ship had less than 200 passingers, these tours had an intimate and friendly feel to them. Every evening we received an information sheet informing us of where we would be visiting the following day, with all the excursions available to us. Thoroughly recomend this river cruise. This was our first river cruise and first time in the countries visited, the booking arrangements were excellent, except that we chose to fly to Munich, Germany a day earlier, and we did not take the pre cruise option to Prague, the US office of Viking personnel told us that the transport from Munich to Passau was up to us that their transport was only for those that arrived the same day as the cruise or have taken the pre cruise package. We tried several ways and finally found one very nice lady from Globus that talked to the Viking Passau person in charge and it worked out, we took a taxi from Munich center to the airport and there we caught the Viking transport bus to Passau. The ship was great, the cruise was an experience of a life time, the personnel on board did every thing possible to make our cruise most enjoyable, the food for all three meals on board was delicious, the waiters were like longtime family or friends the way they pampered us, the housekeeping staff was most friendly and efficient. The entire experience was excellent, we enjoyed it better than the ocean cruises we have taken. Highly recommend Viking to anyone thinking of River Cruises, can't wait for them to start their Mississippi River Cruises in the States in near future! Wines and beverages with meals are included, get an extra one to take with you because in the lounge you must pay even for a glass of sparkling water or soft drink. Pros Viking look after you brilliantly. They met us at Budapest airport, got us on the bus and had three reps at the Marriott Hotel the three days we stayed there. When we were departing, we had to be out the cabin at 9.00am and were not due to be picked up until 1.45pm and we were allowed to use ship’s facilities until then, including a free lunch and drink. Rep met us at Munich airport to make sure we had no problem checking in. On the cruise the Viking staff on the Viking Legend could not have been better and more accommodating. Erica from housekeeping was outstanding. Vlad – Programme Manager and the Hotel Manager also deserve a special mention for excellent service. Cabins were smallish but perfect for what we needed. An excellent safe, a good powerful shower and great mattress. TV had BBC World Service and Sky Sports One. Food was excellent, although we took the light salad lunch each day to avoid completely breaking the scales! Entertainment was fine - -we didn’t do any of it but those who did spoke highly of it. Dinner was 7.00pm each evening, all one sitting. Well it was only 140 passengers, which made it very intimate and personal. Each stop was amazing, Budapest – we will go back for a longer stay; Bratislava – what a modern cosmopolitan place and not too big a city which gives you a good feel for the place in half a day; Durnstein – not enough time there to do shops and walk up to the ruined castle where allegedly Richard the Loin Heart was held; Melk Abbey – incredible if a bit over the top; Vienna and Salzburg – both beautiful and so much to do – we would like to return to both. The one optional extra excursion we did was a evening classical music concert in Vienna (not something I thought I would ever attend). Loved it! The Viking buses which took us to the cities were brand new looked great and very comfortable. Good atmosphere throughout the ship, nice weather most days helped and met some very friendly people on board. Access to laptops from the ship, although internet connection was very slow and was interrupted quite often. Cons Noise at night - engine noise (we were cabin number 231) was, I thought loud. And when we stopped at locks overnight (some nights it was three locks) the sudden noise stopping and then engines re-starting disturb my sleep and my wife felt the same. Other passengers, who were not light sleepers, did not hear a thing. Noise - we could hear the passengers in the neighbouring cabins talking and we could hear their TV. They weren't loud, it just that the cabin walls must be paper thin. I thought we had bought a cruise which was all inclusive (food and drinks). Turns out that fully inclusive means – beer and wine only and only at meal times. Shower was more a wet room, so toilet floor was soaked every morning and evening. Pillows were too soft. We got “tour-guided out” by the end and in fact missed two and dropped out two others to do our own thing. We asked to stay in our cabin an extra hour on the day of departure (we has a 5 hour wait for the but to the airport) , but that could not be accommodated, which we thought was unfair. Guidance on levels of tipping was excessive. They recommend tipping at a rate of $28 dollars per cabin per day, plus separate tips for exceptional staff. Two hour journey from ship at Passau to Munich airport in the taxi was the scariest journey we have ever experienced (including some taxi journeys in Turkey!). Driver took mobile calls, wandered over the white lines regularly, nearly drove into the back of a vehicle a couple of times and worst of all, took down some written instructions form the visor pocket and read them to confirm where he was going – all at 60/70 miles per hour on the autobahn. I tried to rise it with him, but he managed to ignore me. Read Less

While my husband and I have taken several cruises before, we had never done a river cruise, nor cruised with Viking. I will definitely be cruising with them again in the future! Everything was so well-organized, the ship was just the right size and very clean, and the staff were out of this world. It was also great to have prepaid for everything ahead of time--transfers from airport to hotel, hotel to ship, and ship to airport, excursions, etc. All we brought was spending cash for tips, souvenirs and our own meals when we wandered around town by ourselves. The included tours were fantastic. Each guide had a very good command of English, was young, funny and patient, and used a headset so that they did not have to scream to us. Each person got their own headset device that synced to the tourguide's frequency. Effortless! The guided tour itineraries were great and well organized. We saw the heart and most important sights of each city/town we visited and always stuck to the allotted time. The itinerary for our cruise was the Danube Waltz which went to Budapest (Hungary), Bratislava (Slovakia), Vienna, Salzburg, Durnstein and Melk in Austria, and Passau (Germany), flying back home from nearby Munich. So we visited three country capital cities and then several smaller towns, which was a great mixture as well. The service onboard was exceptional. The meals were amazing--3 courses each night with unlimited drinks (except for hard liquor), and the meals consisted of local cuisine from each place. There was even a buffet one night where we were able to go back into the kitchen and help ourselves, with the chefs standing over you piling food onto your plate! I would highly recommend Viking river cruises and definitely plan on going on another one! Read Less

Friendly, courteous, energetic, generous.....truly warm service. Alex was easily the most professional and caring waiter we've ever experienced!  The food was excellent, varied and plentiful. We were looking into another cabin inches from us. I kept the door open anyway since I like fresh air, but it was kind of weird. -the room darkening shade does not reach to close up entirely. How annoying to have a light spot in the gap. -the food included many delicacies of meat and shellfish, but we are vegetarians and requested soups and salads with out meat garnishes that seemed ever present. The wait staff said that is very difficult since the items are pre-made. Getting plain salad greens and sliced tomato at dinner seemed like a major ordeal. -we should have had more time in Vienna. -the bus trip to Prague the tour guide talked the entire three hours and much information was repeated or we had heard prior by another guide on a city tour. I just wanted to watch the scenery at times. -we saw online that the Hilton in Prague had rooms for $79 a night and it would have been way cheaper to book the extension on our own. Our rooms were 50 rooms walk from the elevator. The staff were pleasant and worked hard. The other folks traveling were a nice group. We stayed on the second deck and recommend this level. It was the same level as the dining room and disembarking so it was very convenient.   Read Less

Viking River Cruises has gotten river cruising down to an art. We flew from Seattle to London to Budapest. Viking arranged our air transportation and transfers. When we arrived in Budapest, a smiling Viking agent greeted us. We waited for other Viking cruisers to join us and then a bus took us to the Legend. Our stateroom was ready even though it was noon, and we thought it might not be ready until later. Our room (305) was perfectly situated. It was close to the lobby, coffee station, lounge, and stairs to the dining room. The rooms were very clean and had adequate storage space. Each evening before dinner, our cruise director would provide information about the following day’s events. We thought these short sessions were very helpful. All the excursions were led by guides who spoke good English, explained historical buildings and gave anecdotes about their lives. Viking had stated in their literature that there was a lot of walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces, and it is true. Be prepared with good walking shoes and lots of energy. Viking provided bottled water each day prior to the excursion. The Viking concierge was extremely helpful in providing directions to such destinations as the Great Market Hall in Budapest, and to the Municipal House in Prague. The one thing we were unprepared for was that toilets during the excursions are often “pay” toilets. After the first day, we got change in the currency needed. However, the first day in Budapest, we did not have any Hungarian forint change, so I’d suggest getting some prior to the trip. We thought the Viking shore excursions were well planned. Typically, they would take us in a comfortable bus on a tour of the city. Then we would get out and walk with the guide in a particular area, and finally the guide would let us roam around on our own prior to meeting back at a designated spot. Since it was October, we took layers of clothing. Often it would be cloudy or foggy in the morning so we needed a warm jacket. Then the clouds would burn off in the afternoon, so a light jacket or sweater was perfect. We booked a 3 day extension in Prague. Viking arranged for us to stay at the Prague Hilton, which was situated near the subway station and within walking distance of Old Town. The Viking agents at the hotel explained how to use the subway system and we had no problem at all. For music lovers, the Lobkowicz Palace is not to be missed. One can get there via the subway. On display are the original manuscripts of Beethoven’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th Symphonies. Plus, there was Handel’s Messiah revised and reorchestrated in Mozart’s own hand. This was our first river cruise and we were impressed with every detail. Viking does a first rate job!   Read Less

Good and bad, mostly good. Good = a clean, quiet ship; every meal began on time; meal servers efficient, attentive -- ready with coffee refresher, ready with a second glass of wine or beer; meal portions sensible; food tasty, nicely presented; breakfast buffet variety of items (cereals, eggs, omelets, sausage, fruit, croissants, jams/jellies, OJ, grapefruit juice, coffee, tea, butter, honey, etc.); 24/7 quality coffee from a dispenser near the lounge; treats (cookies, pastry) always available by the dispenser; sanitary standards obviously a priority, from your room to the hallway to the lounge to the restaurant Bad = tours to Salzburg and Durnstein too much emphasis on shopping -- not worth the 2-hour trip to Salzburg, although scenery was beautiful; Salzburg bus dropped you off just outside the main shopping district (don't believe the Web and brochure of the Salzburg gardens because it is only about two blocks long and a block wide) and although some free time was available to get to the hilltop castle there was not enough time to actually stroll into the city proper to see neighborhoods and other city life; Durnstein was one long, narrow street packed with touristy shops, with the ancient castle perched above, reachable by a hike on a steep trail, which actually was good exercise; my advice is to skip Salzburg and stay in Linz to see the city there and you'll have all day to do it; conversely, not nearly enough time in Vienna, only a morning tour with afternoon free time -- it's a city worth part of another day, which could be accomplished by leaving Durnstein off the itinerary and just docking in Melk, with its beautiful abbey. Good = some of the local tour guides who actually were informative because they mentioned modern life in whatever community we were in (Bratislava, Budapest, Passau) with details about the economy, housing prices, political conditions -- in addition to the usual history info. Bad = some of the local tour guides who stuck to a script and did not deviate, had almost no sense of humor or otherwise put no personality into their talk (Salzburg, Vienna). Good = free time in Passau and Budapest to explore the cities on your own, get away from the tourist areas. Bad = not enough independence allowed you, because we would rather have gone off on our own with a good local sightseeing book rather than being stuck in a slow-moving group. Good = attitudes of ship's crew, servers, program director and assistants, concierge; all to be expected, of course, because their livelihood depends on it, but still pleasant to encounter. Bad = attitudes of too many fellow passengers who never tipped the local tour guides or bus drivers; this is inexcusable because that's how these people earn extra income and saving a few euros a day by not tipping just so you can pay for the extra booze you want is awful. Good = We did our airline travel, and we would recommend it because you can rest a day before your cruise and you can continue to where you want to go when you want to go. However, even though we booked our own flights Viking made sure we had transportation (we paid for transfer from Budapest hotel) and a Viking representative met us at the airport as the sun rose in the sky to make sure we got through the baggage process. Viking doesn't forget you when you leave the ship. Would we go again? A couple years from now. Meanwhile, what we learned was how to plan our own trip at less expense. We took trains before and after our cruise (this was a dream vacation that stretched to 22 days) and now we feel comfortable navigating Europe (English, French, German trains).   Read Less
