We arranged our own travel, so no input on Oceania's air scheduling. We enjoyed the ship, the size of the stateroom (Penthouse Suite) and the tub in the bath. The food was good in all venues, service was not. Red Ginger was our favorite for the service and food. The service in the buffet was always immediate. We only ate in the main dining room twice and service was repeated at a level that we never ate there again during the entire trip. It was very slow an hour wait for the first course and even after asking repeatedly for ordered side dishes, they were not delivered. Advising restaurant management did not improve the service or the receipt of the dishes, but did solicit a apologies. This was our first time with butler service and did not particularly care for it. To us, and this may be our butler, it felt intrusive. One day, in spite of noting a "do not disturb" sign being out, the butler felt it necessary to call and comment that, in spite of the sign, he had hors d'oeuvres for us. The sign was out because I was feeling seasick and wanted to rest; food was not a welcome offer. Our room steward was great and always so pleasant and efficient. We were very disappointed to not be allowed to go ashore on Easter Island, and though we understood the rough seas presenting a problem, it was frustrating to discover, post cruise that Oceania is often unable to take passengers ashore at this stop. Had there been a reference to "weather/seas permitting" we would have done more research and probably skipped this cruise altogether, as Easter Island was to be the highlight of the trip. We know there is a general caveat for all ports about potential shore excursion cancellations, but when it becomes a frequent occurrence, passengers ought to be alerted during booking or note it on the itinerary, as they did with Pitcairn. The disembarkation was very well managed and efficient, which cannot be said of the chaos at the hotel to which we were transferred, to await our transfer to the airport. The "holding area" consisted of a lobby off of the hotel's conference rooms and one conference room, with seating for initially about 40-50. Doesn't sound bad, but there were several hundred of us for 6 to 10 hours and they seemed unable to arrange for sufficient chairs. Too many seniors were having to sit on the floor. Then as the morning progressed more luggage arrived and all of it had to go into the conference room; by this time, you could barely work your way through the room. Whatever company Oceania contracted to manage the transfer services, failed miserably!! . This was our first and, for sure, last cruise on Oceania.. Read Less

We were booked on a 3 week cruise of the Tahitian Islands and missed our trip to Peru the year before and since this one ended in Lima, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to do both. Plus, it was less costly than Celebrity's cruise of the Galapagos Islands and Peru. We had a penthouse suite which was beautiful and immaculate, food was excellent and I am a very picky eater. However, I do love wine and there were no good wines that were offered to us and we tried very hard to find some. This was my first Oceania cruise and we had 10 days at sea. We did not get to go to Easter Island due to rough waters which was a disappointment. After the fact I heard this is not uncommon for this cruise.We ended up in Lima a day early with nothing to do. We got dropped off at a tourist shopping mall. I had also heard that the excursions come with the cruise and other things were included as well. Nothing was included. In Fakarava they did not even offer an excursion so we had to find our own. Although nothing can take away from the beauty of the French Polynesia, and the wonderful time we had, I would have preferred to just do the islands, and then fly to Peru. It was too long on the boat with nothing to do. The entertainment was minimal. Read Less

This cruise was to see islands in French Polynesia and travel to Lima via Easter Island. I had wanted to go to Easter Island since college- fifty plus years. This seemed to be a great way to visit. The ship was to be there two days. It was a beautiful sunny day but windy on arrival. The captain said the sea was too choppy for tenders. We circumnavigated the island with some things being pointed out when we were long past. He would not stay there to see if we might be able to land on our second day.. I took this trip to see Easter Island which was not done. A HUGHE heart brake. The ship is very nice and the food is excellent. The specialty restaurants are superb, but the main dinning room food is less good. The outside eating area, Waves, has a nice selection of sandwiches and salads with very good service. The Terrace , which is a buffet has very good food and a helpful staff. Breakfast in the room is excellent. Things arrive hot and on time. The stops in Polynesia were very nice. The islands are truly beautiful. I took a ship sponsored excursion on Moorea. The photographers were very helpful and informative.. The snorkeling was amazing - beautiful fish and the most beautiful coral any of us have seen. This was a very large expenditure of money for me and to not be able to do what I came for makes me very unhappy. When it is highly possible that a major destination of a trip be skipped, I believe this should be spelled out in no uncertain terms in all information on the trip. Soon after boarding the Mariina, I learned for the first time that there could be a problem with Easter Island. Makes me wonder if it was planned to skip Easter Island. Read Less

I have just completed my eighth voyage with Oceania Cruises. The introduction at the beginning of the Cruise Document package wished me an “unforgettable cruise”. It was an “unforgettable cruise”, for all the wrong reasons. In fact for me it was a disappointment. I opted for this cruise against a variety of others available because it was going to Easter Island. As you must be aware by now Marina did not land passengers there because of “inclement weather”, blue skies notwithstanding. I understand the logistics of the decision, but question it. We have been landed in other ports under worse conditions. Wind and seas at Sinop, August 31, 2010 being a prime example. Had I known that not landing was a possibility, I would not have booked this cruise and instead I would have chosen to fly from a South American destination. Your company listed a weather advisory for Pitcairn Island. Why not Easter Island? I found out later that not landing at Easter Island is the rule rather than the exception. On two previous Oceania Cruises I was told that they made landfall on only two of the four days there. So including our cruise that is a 67% failure rate and that I believe should be noted in the itinerary as “Landing at Eastern Island, weather permitting”. The captain didn't bother to hang around for the second day claiming bad weather forecasts. Weather forecasts for most of the trip were unreliable as is the predicted weather pattern for that part of the Pacific. I think the cruise could have profited from better scheduling. For example our plane got into Tahiti at 8 pm precluding us seeing that island. We could have landed in the morning and had the day on the island. To make matters worse my luggage was still in LA. Then to complete that part of the story, when I arrived home in Toronto, my luggage was still vacationing in Houston. Oceania arranged the flights. Most of the staff was very good. Our cabin (7080) stewards Alexandra and Lam Kam (spelling?) were excellent. The entertainment staff - Annette, Bronte, Bethany, Kirsten, Lewis, and Samantha were very good on stage and their attitude and friendliness at the various activities they monitored despite crowds of upwards of 50 wild-eyed passengers vying for the honour of throwing bean bags or putting, was exemplary. Katie Mussler (Social Hostess) falls into the category of superb person and friend. I enjoyed high tea frequently with several of the above. General Manager Dominique also deserves kudos for his overall visibility and eagerness to help. He also merits much credit for arranging a Seder on Passover. Two sour notes. I only ate in the Grand Dining Room seven times and on five of those occasions found the service quite slow (2 and a half hours?) and inefficient (wrong dishes served, or omitted). Whether this goes back to the kitchen preparations and then becomes magnified up the chain of service to the dining room, I don't know. The staff at Jacques seemed to be quite sullen compared to the great ambiance in the other three speciality restaurants. Then a request to have ANZAC Day Memorial Services listed in Currents met with a flat rejection. It was only on ANZAC Day that we were able to gather a group, but couldn't inform everyone and many members of the Commonwealth unfortunately missed the service. The excursion system was a failure. We couldn't book from home as we were told all listed excursions were full. As late as two days before sailing the explanation of full excursions and being “put on a wait list” was given to me. Yet when we arrived on the ship, magically several more excursions had been arranged. Surely these weren't arranged at the last minute. Our anxiety about getting on excursions could have been alleviated had we been told by the Oceania staff when we called that more excursions were being scheduled. The glass bottom boat excursion in Rangiora was a rip off and we should have had a partial refund on that one at least. An hour tour became 40 minutes including time to get to the site and then the gentlemen guiding us had a great deal of trouble with English and spent a lot of time chatting with other boat operators in the vicinity. Other tours were well overpriced as we found tours when we got off the boat for about a quarter the price for the same tour. One last occurrence which left a bad taste in the mouths of many. Big “O” points. Seems inflation hit the redemption scene big time. Some examples of previous cruise points for a 10 day cruise against this 16 day cruise, – umbrella 30 points, this cruise 150; tote bag 35, this cruise 150; T-shirt 35, this cruise 80; baseball cap 25, this cruise 75. And there are other examples of this inflation of points. I can understand a nominal increase in points required, but 5-fold – ridiculous. Lots of excuses and reasons for this, none satisfactory. Despite the great service, excellent food, friendly staff (entertainment and social hostess in particular,),and because of the disappointment at Easter Island, Tahiti, and others noted above, the Cruise rating for this particular cruise hovers around 0/10. I have read some of the early reviews of the Papeete to Lima segment of the Marina Cruise. As usual, on certain points, I feel we were traveling on the ship in another dimension! It was wonderful cruise, with reality settling in from time to time Embarkation was a breeze (we were in the Suites line). The stateroom was a Oceana Suite which I will review in the Cabin section. We were overwhelmed by the size and decor. As Suite pax we obtained a precruise reservations for the Specialty Restaurants and with additional on board booking I snagged 16 nights in the specialty restaurants. so we ate at each restaurant 4 times. The menus were never boring and we gravitated to certain favorite dishes. We did eat in the MDR for the balance of nights and we were never disappointed. Our average dinner at all the restaurants was about two hours. With excellent service and surroundings we enjoyed every minute of the dining experience. The MDR was our daily choice for lunch. Always excellent with the" tour of the worlds" sampler appetizer being our favorite. Hint the Mediterranean sampler is heaven. The shows were not up to the level of say Celebrity talent. I understand the parent Norwegian is working on this but it did not reach the Marina for our trip. The first week's itinerary was French Polynesian Islands. We snorkeled at each Island, booking our own excurrsions. Raitea and Rangiroa had the best snorkling. We saw 5 ft white tip sharks, 4 ft sting rays and zillions of fish. I saw a group of red snapper that easily totaled 500 fish. Pitcairn Island was as expected with some interesting highlights and low lights. One of those places glad we saw it but never need to return. I had high expectations for Easter Island but we could not tender. The wave action was not severe but there is no shelter from the wind and the wind and waves were fighting against each other causing these long rollers. We were down on deck 4, ready to debark when the crew opened the tender platform and immediately seawater came sloshing into the ship. The rolling of the ship caused the tender platform to submerge and that carried seawater into the ship when the ship rolled in the opposite direction, No way any able bodied person could manage boarding a tender, let alone the great majority of seniors on this voyage. The Captain did the right thing. there would have been many injuries. This Island is similar to the vagaries of successful tender, similar to the Falkland Islands. Same thing happened to us there. The Captain had the ship circle Easter Island and I was able to photograph the back side of the famous statues all in a row shot with a telephoto lense, albeit from their backsides. Because of Easter Island we spent a total of 10 days at sea. WE were blessed to have our suite. We traveled about 5000 miles on this cruise, and never before did we experience about 4000 miles of nothingness - no ships, no birds, no sealife, just water. Callao port (Lima) was a commercial port like Cevetevichia (Rome). For non Oceania excursions and debarkation, the main gate was atrocious. Very small and just replete with aggressive taxi drivers. Oceania could improve their handling of local shuttle service. Nevertheless a perfect trip Read Less

17 night cruise started in Papeete. Easter Island was on the itinerary for this 17 night voyage. It was the only reason I chose this particular cruise. We were due to have two days on the island. Having arrived on time the Captain decided that the swell of the sea was too great for disembarkation. After just a few hours he made the decision to sail away to Peru. I found this unbelievable. He didn't even wait to see if the weather changed. Interestingly he was able to allow the comic to get on board along with some food supplies. This took place without incident. Hundreds of passengers were devastated with his decision to sail away and we were not even given a full explanation of his reasoning. Passengers gathered in the reception in order to complain and the concierge and other staff walked away from the passengers which I found highly unprofessional. The atmosphere on the ship changed after this incident and the relentless days at seas that followed were a total nightmare. The Machu Picchu trip booked with Oceania at the end of the cruise was a rip off. We were asked to obtain Doctors permission to undertake the four day trip. Not once was I asked if I had the permission so why did I bother, clearly no one else did! In my group of 14 people there were three disabled guests who couldn't cope with the terrain. These guests held up our group and together with a gentleman who was suffering from dementia totally ruined the trip and I didn't get to see all of the iconic Macchu Picchu site. I couldn't have been more disappointed, especially as I didn't get to see Easter Island. I wrote to Oceania when I arrived home explaining all the things that had gone wrong. Interestingly an email arrived yesterday which clearly stated that Oceania were not responsible for anything! It appears to me that Oceania can act and do exactly what they want, when they want, hiding behind a whole host of excuses and never take responsibility for anything or anyone. It is simply incredible. This trip was the most expensive one I have ever taken and it has to be the very worst holiday I have ever experienced. I believe that Oceania sold a cruise that was not 'fit for purpose'. Read Less

We chose Oceania because of the itinerary. We have never been to the South Pacific or Easter Island before. With only about 800 passengers aboard, embarkation was swift. We were early so we didn't have access to our cabin but there was plenty of room for our carry on bags while we had lunch in the Terrace Café buffet. All of the food was served to us, no guests handled any of the serving utensils to help curb the spread of illnesses, and that continued throughout the entire cruise. We were booked in a concierge level cabin and it was a little smaller than we expected and the balcony was not very large either. The closet was barely large enough for a long voyage but it contained drawers, a safe, as well as hanging space. The shower was tiny but we did also have a bathtub and plenty of storage space in the bathroom. Enough about the cabin - let's get on to the food. Food and service on board was fabulous. There are four specialty restaurants and there is no added cost to dine in any of them. Reservations are required because they fill up quickly. We enjoyed Chilean sea bass in Red Ginger, the Asian restaurant, and it was probably the best we've ever had. Lobster tails are available every night if you choose to dine in the Terrace Café. The Marina did have the finest cuisine at sea, as advertised. We had lunch in the dining room most days and enjoyed their around the world tastes that changed daily. There were seminars about our destinations and more, and hands on classes for art (free) and cooking (for a fee). We also used hand held audio guides to learn about the art on the ship (Picasso is one of the artists). The musical reviews on board were the same as other cruises, full of energy and talented young performers. A string quartet was excellent, as was a comedian who came on board for two shows. Shore excursions were adequate although quite expensive. The South Pacific isn't commercialized yet as so many other ports so choices were limited. We will definitely plan another Oceania cruise. The service and atmosphere were far superior to other cruises we've been on (29 past cruises with Holland American, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival and a few others). Read Less

My husband and I really enjoyed the Marina because they take such good care of their passengers. I wish we would have arrived in Papeete a day earlier to see that city but didn't want to pay the extra Air Deviation fee. Embarkation in Papeete and disembarkation in Lima, Peru was extremely well organized and went very smoothly. The cabins are quite comfortable and the bathroom is by far the best I've seen on a cruise ship with marble floors and a separate tub and shower. The cabin's closet was a bit oddly designed which made it hard to open one of the doors completely but the closet space was adequate. The dining experience is superb in all venues especially the specialty restaurants. Jacques was our favorite. The only negative about the eating arrangements is that all eating venues closed by 9:30 so if you wanted to get a snack later in the evening, the only choice was to have room service because all other eating venues were closed. I didn't particularly like the entertainment and didn't participate in any activities but we did enjoy having a variety of lectures to attend. The service is impeccable and the staff seemed genuinely interested in you having an exceptional experience onboard the Marina. We chose this cruise because the ports of call included the Tahitian Islands and Easter Island; however, we understood that the weather conditions did not allow the tenders to safely transport passengers but were still disappointed that we could go to Easter Island. We enjoyed the excursions but the prices seemed to be somewhat inflated; however, I do have to say that the excursions were very well organized and executed. This was definitely a cruise for seniors and not for children as there was absolutely nothing for them to do. I think Oceania has misjudged their clientele to be country club types but, in reality, the clientele on the Marina were the usual cruisers who didn't mind the expenditures associated with this cruise experience. There was obviously a variety of interpretations of "country club casual". The dress in the main dining room was somewhat disappointing since I think there should be, at least, an effort to dress appropriately for the venue. We saw many people in inappropriate attire (jeans, t-shirts, and athletic shoes)--definitely NOT country club casual. I might choose this cruise line again (maybe for a particular itinerary) but it probably would not be my first choice as I don't think it's necessary to pay this amount of money for a very good cruise experience. The post cruise to Macchu Pichu and Lima were also very well organized and an unforgettable experience. Read Less

Our sailing from Papeete to Lima was our 5th cruise with Oceania but our 1st on a larger O class ship. The ship was beautiful and as usual Oceania met our top three criteria with their wonderful crew, excellent cuisine and a super comfortable bed. We also enjoyed having a greater choice of specialty restaurants and had a fantastic dinner at La Reserve. You have to pay extra for La Reserve, but it is well worth it as the dinners are special and include wine pairings. Our only disappointments were that our 282 sq. ft. stateroom did not feel much bigger than the 165 sq. ft. staterooms we usually book on the R class ships because most of the extra space is taken up by a bathtub (which we do not use), and that the private Spa terrace did not have a thalassotherapy pool (it only has hot tubs). I also found the loungers at the Spa terrace to be less comfortable than those at the pool deck because the backs are not adjustable. We were also disappointed at not being able to visit Easter Island, but Oceania cannot be blamed for the rough seas. The captain made several attempts to find a calmer waters to launch the pontoon for the tenders and the water kept coming over top of the pontoon into the ship. It was obviously unsafe for loading passengers. So he spent the day circumnavigating the island twice to give views from both sides of the ship. Some passengers criticized the captain for not sticking around for the second scheduled day at Easter Island, but the forecast was for much rougher seas the next day and forecasts less than 24 hours in advance are generally accurate. So in our view he made the right decision and we appreciated getting to spend an extra day in Lima. We did not book any Oceania excursions, as they are far too expensive and booking independent tours in French Polynesia and Easter Island was easy. You do not need to form a group; most tour operators take individual bookings. We did lose some money when we had to cancel Easter Island at the last minute, but the money we saved by booking independent tours at the other ports more than made up for the loss. This was our 2nd time cruising the islands of French Polynesia and we plan to return again, as it is in our view an unspoiled paradise with some of the best snorkeling in the world for those who love warm water, calm seas and gorgeous scenery.
