We choose this ship due to the price being very competitive, and booked for 3 people as we took our 20 year old grandson with us, we booked without reading any reviews and only started to read them after we had booked the trip, We were horrified by some of the reviews people saying you had to buy tea and water and even about a hotel charge, So to put the record straight you could get tea ,coffee and water 24/ 7 from the Buffett at no charge , there are no such thing as hotel charges but MSC do put a daily gratuities charge on your bill, which you can if you want opt out as we did and reward staff if you want to, However MSC would rather you pay the charge, There is a wide variety of drinks packages available at reasonable prices .The food in the cafeteria was often Luke warm and the quality was much better inthe main restaurants .overall the cruise was very good the staff were excellent not many English on board mostly Italian and German who tend to barge about !! The shows were excellentand we would go with this company again Read Less

We had cruised with MSC on Divina a few years ago so had an idea what to expect but the experience this time was much worse. I suppose you get what you pay for and the package price, which included the all inclusive drinks, was one of the reasons we chose to try them again as well as the status match scheme that meant we were Gold Level. Embarkation was not as bad as we expected and the ship was in general well maintained and clean. The staff were in the main polite (bar and housekeeping) and helpful apart from the constant attempts at upselling products and services day in day out and the photographers were rude and intrusive everytime you were anywhere near them. Resturant staff struggled to understand your requests and at times delivered incorrect food and you always felt rushed. Not that we used the main reasturant much as our request for first sitting had been ignored and the standard of food was uninspiring, poor quality and barely hot at tmes. Most of our meals were taken in the buffet where it didn't get much better apart from pizza, soups and breads. The kids corner was more popular with adults as they had chicken nuggets and fish fingers! Entertainment was poor, the same people playing the same music at the same time in the same lounge every night, no variety at all. The main shows were no better, end of the pier style at times with some very strange themes. We actually got bored with drinking alcohol as we had to drink to help pass the time as there was nothing to do! Can't see us going back to them. Read Less

We sailed on Magnifica in February, we have sailed on her before and she lived up to our expectations and a little more fun than the previous cruise we had on Splendida. If you are looking for a recommendation then there are a few thing to consider before you choose MSC. If you want the English or American experience then read no further, if you are looking for a cosmopolitan cruise where you will meet several cultures and nationalities then it's worth a try. The ships are high end quality when it comes to design, very modern and sparkling. but the price you pay will be reflected in the food etc. you can get ships that provide high end food but this does come at a price. The size and quality of the cabins are some of the best I have had in many years of cruising, but don't expect expensive toiletries in the room only basic requirements. The cabin was kept spotlessly clean and there were no stains on the walls and carpets that I experienced on some "English" ships. The balcony was a good size with nice table and chairs. In the restaurant we were as usual seated with English speaking guests, the food was good quality but if you want lobster etc. you will need to pay a top up fee or visit the onboard speciality venue. There is plenty of choice on the menu and always two alternative dishes. The meals are not large but there are 5 to 6 courses and if you ask for extra for example two main dishes this does not cause any problems. We also used the MDR for breakfast and lunch if we were onboard as it is a bit more sedate than the buffet, you are assigned a seat and have a choice of either menu with waiter service or serve yourself buffet. We did not use the buffet very often but that was just personal choice, a lot of reports seem to say it is a problem finding a seat; but there was always room towards the back of the ship or dare I suggest you share with a stranger and have a chat. We found plenty of entertainment in the evening, some of the main shows were variety style but it must be remembered they are trying to cater for several different languages so an English comedian would fall on deaf ears. the other musicians were varied and of a very good standard. on other cruise lines we have sailed on there have been dead areas and dead spots when the acts changed over, but on all the MSC ships we have been on the entertainment has been seamless and you hardly notice the acts changing over. We enjoy ballroom and Latin dancing and found we could dance all evening if we wished. An area of tranquillity exists in the atrium where there was a string trio and a pianist alternating until late. We spoke to several members of the crew and staff ranging from officers to bar and cabin staff and found all to be courteous pleasant and willing to chat. So I would advice that you take the time to engage with them as they all seem to have an interesting tale to tell and are full of information about the ship. The main gripes we had were firstly with the casino, this is an area where smoking is permitted; if you don't smoke it is a no go area so if you want to play the tables or machines then you have to put up with the smoke. The air does get very thick as it is also used as a warm area to smoke in the evening instead of going on deck, I do suspect I would have done the same if I still smoked. The other issue with this is that it does permeate into the nice tiger bar where there is some nice music and dancing. Another problem we found it that there is no control over people using the hand gel when entering the food areas or entering the ship from shore. I can't understand why the management don't choose to enforce it as a virus breakout causes a lot of disruption for them, and why O why do people not use it and make every effort to try and dodge past it; some even putting their hands towards the machine and then walking away rubbing their hands as if they have used it. Still on the subject of guests and their attitude, if you are on holiday it is a time to smile and enjoy yourself not try to push and grab, get in front and jump queues; there does seem to be some nationality who are very selfish. Why on formal nights do some people decide to go in the restaurant looking like a refugee, please at least try to put some clean dressy clothes on. Think of it as if you are on shore, is that how you would dress to go from a meal in a restaurant or go to a show. If you don't want this type of expectations of dress recommendations then there are cruise lines who will cater for your wishes. So would we cruise with MSC again, well the next one is booked and we sail a week after this one. Read Less

We chose MSC Magnifica as we had sailed with MSC twice before on the Fantasia and the Orchestra, and could not fault either ship, and the cost of an MSC cruise is very favourable So it is the Magnifica that has finally burst the MSC bubble for us and we have to say overall out of 25 cruises we have done so far, with this and other cruise lines this has got to be our worst experience in a long long time. Lets get the good bit out of the way. The ship itself is beautiful very colourful glitzy and clean Our cabin ,was a balcony cabin number 9173 which was nearer to the rear of the ship than we had hoped but never the less it was extremely clean and comfortable, however the pillows were not as plumped up as we would have liked. Overall the ship itself we could not fault, and we would say the only real issue we had was when the weather turned a bit nasty and the sea became choppy,we felt every dip and roll, but we have put this down to the position of our cabin ( we generally prefer and ask for a midship cabin ). Now for the not so good bits and as with previous reviews there were many, and it began as soon as you stepped onboard, with the staff lined up trying to push a drinks package on you.Staff were not helpful in directing you to your cabin or anywhere else for that matter all they seemed to want is for you to sign up for a drinks package, and were really persistent. Suffice to say we did not sign up for any drink package. This theme of wanting your cash continued for the whole cruise with waiting staff continually pestering you to sign up for a drink package, the photographers were strategically placed around the ship were obviously they knew passengers would have to pass to get to the various bars etc and again they were pushy and persistent. We also had to endure staff coming round the bars asking if you would like to buy a lottery ticket or a scratch card and at times they shoved them under your nose. If you wanted to sit and listen to any of the singers/ musicians without wanting to purchase a drink then you had no chance as many waiting staff looked at you as if to say well you have got to buy a drink if you want to sit and listen to the music,( which wasnt that good anyway). Our gratuities were pre paid at 9€ per person per night, and really for the service we got we wish we hadnt signed up for them. However our cabin steward was very good and we would much rather the bulk of our tips go to him, because as for the rest well.....Food. Again as with previous reviews the food was often luke warm bland not very apetising and in the main restaurants the portions were a bloody disgrace, with child like portions etc,and the variety and choice was very limited to say the least. Our waiter, i wont name him but he was pleasant enough but had no idea and often made mistakes. Now for our BIGGEST BUGBARE, the entertainment, especially in the theatre. We had to endure three supposedly headliner shows of OPERA and all sung in Italian, yet our fellow passengers were multi national and English is widely understood and chosen. Bloody opera i ask you. We even had the two guest opera singers singing in the centrum you just couldnt get away from them,we know there are a lot of Italians fond of Opera but on a cruise ship taking up three nights in the theatre? As for the rest of the shows it was all run of the mill stuff with MSC singers and dancers doing the same dance routines each night but with different costumes. They also roped in the other so called entertainers which were a selection of jugglers acrobatics and body contortionists to make up the shows, which lasted barely 40 minutes, which on hindsight was just as well really. Very dissapointed in the cruise directors choice of entertainment around ship, although i do have to say the three classical musicians in the centrum were very good especially the violin player. Well that about sums our cruise on board the Magnifica . On a final note disembarkation was a farce( well what did you expect me to say ? We were supposed to be called to disembark at 9.30a.m At 10a.m we were still waiting for the nod to leave the ship.we were getting worried as we had arranged a private taxi transfer to the airport .In the end we just got up and left the ship without waiting for the colour code we were given for our luggage to be announced.Once off the ship it was some distance we had to walk to get to the area were all the luggage was waiting to be collected.Had it been raining we would all have been soaked. This should be much nearer to the ship. So a major dissapointment for us this cruise and one we were glad to be leaving.Would we go again with MSC,well we never say never because when all said and done the actual cost of an MSC cruise is still relatively cheaper than there counterparts, however the old addage still stands you get what you pay for or do you in the case of an MSC Magnifica cruise. We do believe this ship is sailing out of Southampton this summer 2017, and if thats the case they had better get their act together for their British guests and start listening and acting on all of the complaints highlighted by other passengers where the theme is pretty consistent. Come on MSC listen and make those changes then perhaps we may just choose another MSC cruise. Read Less

We chose MSC to go away for Christmas largely because of the price. Having said that we paid over 3k for 11 nights, so not exactly a bargain. Where to start? Well we arrived at Milan Linate airport with no delays and only an hour and a quarter flight from London, brilliant. We found the MSC rep at the airport who told us to wait outside for the coach transfer. Well we waited and waited, a coach arrived with the ships name on, after an hour or so, we asked if we could get on, or was minus 1 and freezing. However we were to,d that we weren't ' on the list' so the coach left only a quarter full. After a further hour, we were told by the rep that we were waiting for another flight, which had been delayed. I.e. Eventually arrived 2 1/2 hours after us. We got on the coach and had a 2 hour transfer to Genoa. We finally saw the ship and thought, thank goodness we are finally here. But...no. We went into the departure hall and were presented with a ticket, number 26. No explanation. We Sussed out that every 100 or so people are given the same number and then wait got a digital display to show that number and then they all go en masse to a roped off area. Talk about chaos. We waited again and...very very slowly. Inched our way to the rope. You then go to a desk where they take ticket number 26 and you queue en masse again for security. This took about 2 hours. We arrived on the ship shattered and fed up. We had been ' in transit' after leaving home for around 17 hours by now. Please remember it's only an hour and a quarter flight..,..the ship itself was nice enough, but compared with Italian designers, think Versace rather than Armani. Cabin was nice, very clean and comfortable. Food in the buffet was dire. Italian chefs are supposed to be among the best in the world... really? Most of the buffet food was not hot enough and some of it downright cold. Some also looked pretty disgusting, it's all served in huge sort of dishes which made a lot of it look like slops, but they did have hamburgers and hot dogs and chips at lunch and dinner lol. The food in the main restaurants was better but the service was terrible. We had the late sitting, 8.30, but we were generally still waiting for desert at 11.30 ish. Entertainment was ok, very geared to the 5 million Italian people who seemed to be on the ship with us. I would never say, ' I don't like Italians' I wouldn't assume to know all of them of course, but the ones on our cruise with MSC were awful. They let doors go in your face, stole your chair, obnoxious. They also roamed around in packs with no spacial awareness or consideration for any other guest. They were awful. The trips were ok, very expensive and not worth the cost. Casablanca is awful, dirty and a real dangerous feel about it, would never go there again. The speciality restaurant, Asian, was nothing special but better than the buffet obviously. Our day of departure was another joke, we left the ship on the only transfer back to Linate at 8.30. Arrived at Linate at about 10.30, what time was our flight? 4.30pm, says it all really. Would we cruise with MSC again, no, not even if it was free, life's too short. We received a survey from MSC to complete, when I dud and got to the end, it logged me out automatically without allowing me to submit my thoughts. Says it all really. Don't go...... Read Less

This cruise had a very good itinerary, going to some places I haven't been to before. Leaving Valetta was really wonderful, second best sail away after Venice. Unfortunately we were unable to dock at Katakolon port due to bad weather. But the cruise line cannot control the weather. The staff as always on MSC are delightful always pleasant and fun too. The Animation team were exceptional , the best team we have had so far. The Grande finale of the entertainment team, and staff was totallybeyond words. The opera singers were sublime. MSC are the only cruise line that I know of that has such a love of Opera. Perhaps it's because it is Italian owned. My sister and I Loved the whole experience. If I have any grumbles they double booked my sister's cabin, this was resolved slowly and I don't like the mix of waiter and buffet service in the dining room. Bring back waiter service. But really pleased with everything else well done MSC Read Less

Returned today from MSC Magnifica. Where do I start. Embarkation Flights arranged through MSC. Outbound was OK but transfer to ship was poor. Started to board ship around 11am. Embarkation had hardly any info about what to do once onboard. Was ushered through the 'system' and eventually got onboard where security picture was taken. Then ushered further down the deck to be accoustomed by staff trying to sell drinks packages. We already prepaid for an all inclusive drinks package, and just wanted a drink after our long trip. Nobody was interested about telling us how to get 1 without having to pay. Was eventually told after an hour that our cruise cards were on the bed in the cabin, which were not available until 2.30, but could go and get them as the door to the cabins were open. Picked up cruise cards and got a drink. Then the fun started. No luggage outside stateroom at 4pm, when fire drill was 4.15pm and sailing was at 5pm. Most of the customers luggage was in the 'staff' stairwells, pikled high. We stood and watched staff open the lift doors and throw the luggage on top of the increasingly hightening stack of luggage. Some customers were trying to find their own luggage with little success. Took some pictures as I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Went to reception and showed the pictures to them and they were in disbelief. Straight on the phone, although the luggage did not arrive until after setting sail. Good job it was there, really. Food 1st experience of the food, was to grab a snack in the buffet as we had a late sitting (8.30) in the restraurant. Not enough working hand sanitisers to stop the spread of germs, and no enforcement to actually use them, which most people didn't. Wondered what it would be like when we saw that all the plates, cups and glasses were plastic and looked like they had not been replaced for many years. Dirty looking napkins actually were wound round cutlery that also looked dirty. Food was awful. Poor choice, poor availability, luke warm and bland. Not enough seats for guests and not enough room to swing a cat at the counters. Tables not cleared after being vacated added to this experience of trying to find a clean table. Good way to start a cruise. Totally surprised on that first visit that there hadn't been an outbreak of some bug or other. We were hoping for improvements at dinner. Alas, the only thing that improved, was we actually had a seat. Food choice was poor, was only warm, was bland and was of a portion size I would have given a child. 2 1/2 hours later we left the restraurant as the service was not very quick. Indeed on 11 of the 11 nights we were the last ones out of the restraurant, usually 11pm or later, even though we had been seated at 8.30. The dining experience did not improve over the course of the cruise. Breakfast was a joke in the buffet. No seats, dirty tablesand poor choice. Availability of hot (WELL, COLD REALLY), food was generally poor with items unavailable after approx 10am, despite breakfast being available until 11.30. Breakfast in the restraurant was slightly better, with guaranteed seating being available, but the food, just as bad as the buffet. Lunch, either in the restraurant of buffett was also a joke. 45 minutes to even have our order taken for lunch on the 1st day. Entertainment Again, as with the food, a joke. Mostly based around dance lessons, groups and singers that couln't really sing and did the same routines every night. Never visited the Theatre as the description of the shows made it sound like it was all in Italian, despite the highest proportion of guests being English speaking. Very little entertainment during the day, even on sea days. Service Service varied depending on the time of day. Surprisingly, it was better in the evening, before dinner. On a few occasions we waited 20 minutes to have drink orders taken in a bar, only to be ignored and moved onto another bar, where we had the same treatment. In the end, went up to the bar to order drinks myself, only for the staff to insist on bringing them to the table. When at the bar, we must have been invisible, as Italians, Germans and French guests seemed to get priority. Service in the restraurant was very slow as previously mentioned. Public areas seemed to be bit shabby and dated, Smoking areas There were several smoking areas on the ship and as a NON SMOKER, I was disappointed to find tjhat people were using e-cigaretts inside , despite being banned and nothing was done. Smoking is allowed in the Casino, which is also unacceptible for us. It is allso allowed in the cigar room, but unfortunately the smell seemed to permeate out onto the area around it on Deck 7. Also it drifted down the stairwells to the Tiger Bar on Deck 6. This should be fully vented outside of the ship. Cabin The cabin was a bit on the small side and on entering the bathroom, there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke. Contacted reception and eventually the steward appeared with some cleaning stuff. We were told it was the smell of Espresso coffee. Don't think so!!! The smell kept returning, so we put up with it. The bed was very comfortable, but there was no double glasing on the balcony doors, which were very drafty. The balcony was small. Disembarkation This was the icing on the cake. We had to disembark at 8.45 to catch a transfer to Nice airport for our homeward flight at 19.15. Why MSC couldn't let us disembark later, so as to shorten the total travelling time, I do not know!!!!! It was a 2 1/2 hour bus trip, with no stops. We arrived at the airport at 11.40 only to find out that we were not allowed to check in our luggage until 16.45. Sio we were dropped off and left to it for 7 1/2 hours, even though there was flights earlier. As MSC had done a group booking, (probably very cheaply) we could not change our flight. So from getting up early to arriving at Gatwick, was a 15 hour journey. I would not recomment this cruise line and maybe they should stick to their core business of container shipping. Value for money. NO Recommend? DEFINATELY NOT Read Less

I choose this cruise for the itinerary; however the experience was extremely disappointing in terms of entertainment; the only options were old fashion (and depressing) German songs that only German people knew; no dance music, no salsa, only very old German waltzers. The only option to dance was waiting till 11 for the disco to open but it was always deserted because too late. My family got some present tickets in the room (because they did many cruise) however the present was something we already bought (the Spa Experience), when we explained that to the reception, they said that if we already have paid for the experience, then we won't get anything else. The evening show was very basic (always the same choreographies) and every night there was flamenco, very boring to watch flamenco every night. The animators were also very boring didn't seem to have fun; I will give 3 stars only because the cabin was always extremely clean and the restaurant staff very positive; Read Less

We have just returned from a 22 night B2B cruise. Our first MSC cruise was last month and this was no better (actually it was worse). We were attracted by the Status Match scheme which catapulted us into their highest Black Card Status. We immediately hit a problem when we went to confirm our request for a table for 2 had been received (it wasn't, just like last month). Salvatore, the obnoxious assistant Maitre'D was adamant that they only had 5 tables for 2 on the ship and had a waiting list of 100 couples, so we couldnt be accommodated. We spent our first 3 nights eating in the buffet, whilst checking with Salvatore each afternoon. He claimed there was no record of our table request but we found the reply from MSC on our phone. He finally said he would speak with the Maitre'D (Alberto). We still heard nothing until we cancelled our gratuities - we would prefer to pay staff who served us and not the restaurant waiters who didn't. That did the trick and Alberto came to find us in the buffet to advise that they had managed to find us a table for 2 after all. That sort of action really does irritate me, but at least we got the table for 2. Our waiter (Ramil) was excellent together with his assistant (Cadek) and we gave them a nice tip over and above the automatic ones which had been re-instated. Sadly, the food in the restaurant was terrible; can't they find a chef who knows how to cook any type of meat? The pasta and other Italian staples were fine though. The lunchtime buffet was better but ALL food throughout the ship was once again only luke warm. Just like on Splendida last month, the entertainment was atrocious. The daytime activities were non-existent, the evening shows were dire and the music in the bars was repeated night after night (so much so that we knew the playlist in each venue). However, once again the staff were (mostly) excellent and the service they provided just about saved this cruise for us; though even they were not as friendly or happy as the staff on Splendida. We are due to give MSC one last try (as we had already booked and will lose the deposits). Hopefully, the Yacht Club experience in Jan 2018 will seem like another cruise line entirely - fingers and toes crossed. Read Less
