Just completed our first river cruise on the Rhine with Uniworld River Queen. Purchased a french balcony; not sure why it is called a balcony as this is a floor to ceiling window which doesn't open out onto a balcony at all, indeed there were no balconies onboard. Extremely disappointed in the position of the room which is situated right next to the restaurant, subsequently prior to the restaurant opening there is a cacophony of noise outside this room as people queue until the restaurant is opened making it impossible to sleep in in the mornings even if we wanted to! The restaurant itself is on the small side and can be very cold if sitting next to a window. Everyone tends to desend on the restaurant as it opens in the evening and the noise is unbelievable, you can hardly hear the person next to you speak. Although the food was good, if not repetitive in terms of the soups on offer, the plates are stacked cold for breakfast. There is no tea/coffee making facility in the cabin, the only place you can get a drink outside of restaurant opening is a machine midship. I believe entertainment was offered on 3 nights out of the 10, violin music. The ship does have a boutique feel, and the staff are helpful and polite at all times. There are bikes to take off the ship as well as guided bike rides on 3 occasions. Guided hiking was also offered on a couple of occasions. Otherwise the ports and shore excursions were all of adequate standard, offering a "Quiet Vox" for everyone making it possible to hear commentaries very well. On sunny days it was very uncomfortable to sit on the upper deck as the chairs and sunbeds were not padded. Overall extremely disappointed, wrong boat and worst of all, wrong room!! Room 422 opposite must suffer the same noise issue, though I cannot advocte for that here. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the destinations and prior reviews. The crew was great, the room adequate, the ship is unique and pretty. However the tours were badly organized with two exceptions, Heidelberg and Cologne. The Luxembourg tour with the American cemetery was awful. Only four hours allowed and forty five minutes each direction. We did not get to the cemetery as one road had construction. The tour director evidently did not check before with the cemetery. The bus driver asked a tractor driver for directions. We wanted to pay respects to my uncle who is buried there. The tour of the town was a mess one guide lost half his group. We were left huddled under pouring rain while the buses sat not far away. This was not an isolated incident several tours had bus drivers that had no idea where they were going. The dining room was totally disorganized and the food was average. Frozen butter, forgotten bread and you got rushed out at the end. Entertainment was laughable. No piano player at night or dancing. Three nights live music, two violinists and a vocalist with a guitar accompanied by recorded backround on two. We feel the entire thing was overpriced and underperformed. By all means do a river cruise the Rhine and Moselle are spectacular. Just not this one. By the way french balconies did not open like on other river cruises. Read Less

We love the Moselle and the lovely towns on its shores. That part did not disappoint. This was a new cruise, and we were the first group to take it. This was our fourth cruise with Uniworld, and we have always loved the elegance of their product. Here’s what was disappointing: 1. no pianist on board - have always loved the sophisticated atmosphere in the lounge with a pianist taking requests. No pianist. Bummer. 2. Food was not as wonderful as usual...twice I ordered steak from the alternate menu...both times lots of gristle and tough. No ice cream offered as alternate dessert. No apple strudel or sauerbraten although we were in Germany...bummer. 3. There were 3 evening shows. One was classical string music and it was terrific, but the other two played oldies and pop music. Uniworld has always been great about affecting cultural programs in the evenings (folk music, etc), but we didn’t get any. We didn’t book a German cruise to hear YMCA and ABBA in the evening.very disappointing. Ocean cruises play that pop crap...Uniworld is better than that. 4. The Uniworld catalogue in its description of this cruise listed a lot of cultural excursion offerings, NONE of which ended up being offered. 5. Too much time in big cities...Frankfurt, Mainz, Bonn, Cologne, which could have been spent in the Riesling towns on the Moselle All this being said, the service was FANTASTIC. Read Less

This trip from Basel to Amsterdam over 13 days was so good. Last year we went on the Danube from Budapest to Prague but this has much more scenic vistas. My number one tip is to book your trip through Costco. We got a shipboard credit of $300 and a cash card for $1300. On the ship the crew was amazing and so hard working. The guests were very friendly to each other and we got to know some wonderful new friends. We had great weather. The included tours were very comprehensive and there were just 3 extra cost tours. My minor complaints were that the dinner menu was not to my liking. Some items that I would never eat. I am not a big drinker but all drinks are all included in this tour. Also, the layout of the dining room for the breakfast buffet was cramped. I would highly recommend Uniworld. Read Less

The boat was nice, crew friendly, and well organized and food very good. Some points to consider: * We travel often and don’t use a travel agent. Being our first time with UW, we booked by phone. The customer service reps were less than helpful, and when notified of our “late” flight time, said that if we had read the small print in the contract we received a couple of days after booking, that we would have seen that UW doesn’t provide transportation to the boat if you flight arrives after 5 o’clock. (our flight arrived at 6). We would need to find on own way to the ship. We took a taxi to the river, and finally found the boat among the 12 that were there. * All the tours are included in the price of the trip. If you don’t want to take one or more you are paying for them anyway. Some tours are back to back on the same day. If you want only the second tour you must go on the first one or pay for transportation to catch up with them for the second. * A lot of the towns are not close to where the boat is docked. You are bussed into the town and told when the bus will be back to pick you up. If you want to come back earlier you can find a place to sit and wait * Meal times change from day to day as they are arranged around the tour schedules. If breakfast is 7- 8:30 and you don’t want to go on the tour, you still must be at breakfast during that time. Since the eating period is so short the staff move quickly to get you out in time for the tours. Leaving your seat to get additional food will mean that your plate and all silverware will be gone when you get back. If you miss breakfast, room service is a roll, orange juice and coffee. * Schedule times can change daily, so you are given next day’s schedule the night before. Always check with the front desk though, because there may be adjustments. And what’s on the schedule is sometime suspect. One tour was “scheduled” to return to the boat an hour after the boat “left”, another schedule had the boat arriving and leaving at the same time. Read Less

This was our second cruise on Uniworld. We were so impressed with the first cruise on the Joie de Vivre in Paris we had to see if it was some how different. We were not disappointed. The service, accommodations, meals and excursions were just as good on our second cruise as the first. Although the rooms are a bit smaller than the Joie de Vivre, it was more than adequate. After all how much time do you spend in your room. We met so many people during the cruise. Sharing cocktails and meals with them made our trip socially entertaining too. There was lounge entertainment every evening and every other night there would be special local entertainment, Dutch dancers, singers and classical musicians. All of them including the lounge performer were very good. Late afternoons we were treated to a strudl making demo and beer tasting. May have missed other because of excursions. We had Ingrid as the cruise director on both our Uniworld cruises. Her patience on herding a bunch of people around all day has to be appreciated. We got private access to The Hermitage and various other sites during the excursions. A lot of walking so brings some comfortable shoes but well worth the effort. You can also go at a more leasurely pace if you choose, but we were up to the challange and it was great exercise. Waiters, bar tenders, and housekeeping were all friendly, courteous and helpful. By the second day they would call you by name and anticipate your needs. The breakfast omlet chef was one of my wife's favorites. Breakfast and lunch were a bit routine but dinner was always a new experience. Read Less

Our third river cruise and second with Uniworld. We previously sailed with Uniworld from Amsterdam to Budapest and loved it. This cruise, from Amsterdam to Basel,( with a detour down the Moselle) had only two stops in common with our earlier cruise. The scenery along the Moselle was outstanding. Much of our free time was spent on the top deck. The cabin was small, but adequate. The food was great and the service was nothing short of outstanding. Several people had problems with their airline reservations which weren't apparent until the day before our disembarkation. Denisa, the cruise director, spent a lot of time on the phone straightening everything out and everyone seemed satisfied. All of the tours were interesting but our favorites were Luxembourg, Trier, Strasbourg, and Colmar. We spent two days prior the cruise in Amsterdam. It was worth it. It gave us time to adjust to the time change and do a walking tour of Amsterdam. We also spent three days after the tour in Basel. Another great time exploring a lovely city. It's a very expensive city, however, and I would recommend getting a hotel room that includes breakfast. We are already planning our next cruise with Uniworld. Read Less

My RACQ travel agent recommended this cruise. It was fantastic advice! The cruise was pure luxury all the way. Staterooms, staff, service and shore excursions all exceeded my expectations. Before this, I had only done ocean cruises - with mixed reactions. This cruise enabled me to relax, unwind and enjoy the passing scenery. The choice of shore excursions was extensive. I was particularly impressed with the way appropriate alternatives were made when excursions didn't go according to plan - for example, a tour of the BMW factory was unavailable because we arrived on a Sunday. The alternative visit to the Maybach museum proved to be just as exciting. The food on offer was a blend of old favourites and local dishes. Apart from the fact that too much food was offered, I thought the entire dining experience was superb. Congratulations to the chefs and their helpers. Nothing was ever too much trouble. The 15 day cruise gave me a new historical, economic and cultural perspective of the areas I visited. Next time I want a river cruise I will definitely travel with Uniworld again. Read Less

I find it difficult to fault this cruise. On all levels the score would be nearly maximum. Staff, food, entertainment, excursions, organisation, flexibility were all excellent. When you take into account that nearly everything is pre-paid, you could literally leave your wallet at home and it compares favourably with some other cruises that appear cheaper untill you add on the the costs that are included here. The pace of the shore excursions catered to people of all abilities from the very fit to those who had limites mobility You could tailor your holiday to your personal needs. If you didn't feel like going ashore, there was enough onboard to satisfy your needs and for those who wanted a more active day, there were trainers and activities to keep you busy. The staff need a special mention because at the final evaluation, they are the people who are going to mould your experince. Every single staff member was falling over themselves to ensure that we had a great time. I would definitely use Uniworld again Read Less

Overall experience was excellent from the moment we were met at the airport to the moment we disembarked by an arranged taxi. The ship by nature of its looks and style had character without being too ostentatious. Whilst on the cruise we didn't see any others with a funnel nor the same overall colour! The cabin despite being on the lowest deck was excellent(there are advantages to being next door to the laundry). The built in availability of different type power outlets was a very nice touch. The service by all departments on board was excellent including the crew and Captain. No other cruises we have been on have we met such an approachable captain with a great sense of humour. Shore excursions were great and catered for all ages and levels of fitness. The walking and riding tours were a great way of reducing the effects that come from very good dining choices. A cruising experience we would like to do again. Read Less

I would only use Uniworld for river cruising as they are the best in all that they do. They do go out of their way to make you happy. The extra entertainment at night on board was very good. The walking tours were never rushed and very informative. the guides were the best!! The food was the best and the head chef would go out of his way to make you something that you didn't see on the menu. He did make the best soups!! Everything from the embarkation to the disembarkation went as smoothly as always. The crew is soooo helpful with your bags. Room service was great, as the girls worked to make everything just perfect! I would go again on a Uniworld cruise, as this was our 5th. Read Less

We decided to take this cruise as we were interested in seeing the tulips in flower, learn more of the water management in The Netherlands, had experienced excellent tour management by Uniworld several times already and because friends we had met on a previous cruise suggested we join them. Expectations were met in all categories. We had visited Amsterdam briefly after a previous Uniworld cruise; the more time we spent there the more we enjoyed it. A couple of days spent there before this cruise started was well spent. We enjoyed all aspects of the tour; the itinerary was well constructed and met our expectations as the tulips were in full bloom and we were given plenty of opportunity to learn how the Dutch have managed to live mostly below sea level. The on board staff were courteous and ensured that all aspects from room cleanliness, laundry service, dining room and bar management and tour management were carried out effectively and professionally. The only minor criticism is that the River Queen has a split level dining room which caused some inconvenience. The food was excellent. A good Tour Manager is critical to the successful conduct and enjoyment of the itinerary; Uniworld has always excelled in this area and the local guides were all very knowledgeable. We came away with a much better understanding of the regions of The Netherlands and Belgium that we visited. We found travelling this April to be chilly on occasions, but mostly fine. The strong tulip flowering made it all worthwhile. This cruise is highly recommended. Read Less

On the first day we were pampered from the dock to the ship by three very attentive crew members. Our room was clean and neat every day. Room supplies were replenished everyday x2. The excursions as we traveled were well planned and well guided by local residents. Each guide had a passion for the excursion and were very well informed about the history of the area and what was happening now. The staff during the trip was unbelievable in that they were there for us without even asking. The food was great too. It was a 5 star menu from some very dedicated chefs. I tried more things that I have tried in some time and liked every bite. The quiet box provided on the excursion made our experience more enjoyable and information. In the past you had to stand next to the guide to hear what was being said, but not on this trip. If you are comparing cruise lines, chose this one as you will not be disappointed. Read Less

Can't believe all the neat places we toured that we had not heard of while living there. It was very different seeing from along the rivers and very different from ocean cruising. We plan to take more river cruises in the future. The staff, food, beverages, tours, onboard entertainment, everything was all phenominal. Can't wait to go with UniWorld again. We suggest an IT person review the on-line process of completing the passenger information form. I am not an expert computer tech but have over 25 years as a user. We actually booked our first river cruise through Costco and trusted their judgement. It far exceeded our expectations! The food was truly wonderful as was the impeccable service....friendly and extremely helpful. The ship only had 94 passengers and we became friendly with most of them by the end of the 12 night cruise. Each day we had at least one tour and we were always greeted cheerfully when arriving back at the ship. There was an entertainer on board who played the piano and sang during afternoon tea; during cocktails before dinner; and also played dance music after dinner. A couple of times there were performers who came on board as a nice surprise from local villages. My husband and I have traveled many places in the world but have never taken a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises really know how to treat people and leave them with wonderful memories. We are already planning our next river cruise, probably on the Danube. Great lounge and over the top entertainment nearly every night. We would recommend to anyone wanting to see beautiful scenery, quaint and not so quaint german towns and cities, and a a slew of castles and vineyards, The tour guides were all very informative and helpful in directing us to see what was important to us. We especially enjoyed the days on the Moselle, lined with vineyards on impossible slopes, and many picturesque towns. This is our third cruise with Uniworld and the second time on the River Queen. This boat is elegant and reminds us of the good old sailing days past. The entire Staff is very knowledgeable about the cities we stopped at as well as the local food and wines that had been served during out stay on board. It was a home coming for us to meet old friends and make new ones among staff and guests. We had such good time we did not wanted to disembark in Basel, Switzerland. Sailing up the Mosel River was an extra pleasure for us as well as our new and old friends for whom it was the first time sailing this way. The cabin was very nice with a beautiful view of the passing scenery. Sitting on the Sundeck and chatting with fellow guests while watching the Mountains and Vine Yards was a wonderful experience for us all. We were fortunate to find this particular cruise through a special on "Black Friday." We only knew that we wanted to try a river cruise, and are delighted this was the one. We had lived for a summer in Germany many years ago and found joy to be in Germany again. Our stateroom was always clean and we found it very comfortable. Since you spend little time in the stateroom it was adequate despite being on the small side with a small, but well arranged bathroom. Our cabin steward took care of everything. This was one place where having gratuities take care of came in handy. My luggage was lost and the people who met us in Basel worked to find it. After we were on the ship I was reassured by our Cruise Director and he worked hard, calling around until the bag arrived. The public areas of the ship were lovely and very comfortable. It was a joy to sit in the lounge with an excellent cocktail and a few munchies to settle from the busy days. If we sat on the upper deck while cruising, staff kept up with drink orders so well. Excursions were well planned and very interesting. My husband is a historian and was glad to find they were accurate. Gentle walking tours made it possible for me to go. Arthritis makes me slow, but I can keep going. I was exhausted after one excursion when there was no slow walker tour. All the leaders had excellent English and were interesting, but one this one day I was made to feel that I was causing a problem. Others on the trip were irritated for me. I had to miss one excursion because there was no Slow Walker on an exceedingly hot day. Everyone that went said they were glad I did not go because of the speed of the tour. I complained and there were slow walker groups for all other tours. Lectures on board were interesting and useful. Brexit had recently happen and our cruise director's explanation helped me understand it so much better. I really do not have an adequate vocabulary to praise the food. Local and excellent with wonderful service meals gave us many happy memories to take away. Servers were very patient and explained things well. Soups were particularly good on the whole trip and we often asked for both soups. We would start with a small amount of both wines, then settle on one. No raised eyebrows, at least in our presence. :-) A mechanical malfunction was serviced as soon as they could, with good communication with us. This showed us how the crew was indeed a family and could work together. On the hot upper deck they rushed around moving us to shade, seeing we kept hydrated and providing whatever we wanted to drink. The whole crew worked to make us comfortable for an excellent dinner on deck. A stipend was given to people who wanted to dine in the town nearby. All in all it was an incredible trip. No other words need be said, other than we could not wait to plan another cruise. Will never stray from Uniworld, they spoiled us so thoroughly. Read Less

Simply a magical journey with excellent and caring staff and wonderful opportunities to experience the best of the Rhine and Moselle. I am always a bit apprehensive before travel as I need to manage my work and home responsibilities fully, before I depart. This cruise line made it happen ever so smoothly. From the 'wellness coach' to the dining staff, to the magical bike rides, mystical castles and enchanting castles, it was nothing less than relaxing and magical. I have dietary restrictions that were managed effortlessly and for the first time I was able to enjoy my meals! It was a special event for us to travel during this time and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. The views, calm, excited, and experience will be cherished for a long time to come. Our first River cruise. We thought the staff was the most enjoyable surprise of our cruise. From housekeeping, to the lounge and dining room personnel, we couldn't have asked for better service and attention to detail. The food was excellent with many choices, but I generally went with Chef Danny's recommendations. I cannot praise this ship and it's crew high enough! 5 stars isn't enough. We sailed on the Uniworld's River Queen from 6/8 to 6/22. From the very beginning we were treated like honored quests; the whole crew made you feel that it was their privilege to serve & help you in any way. I was travelling with my 92 & 93 year old mother & father. The crew did everything in their power to ensure their comfort & safety. My mother got sick on the cruise & spent 2 days in her cabin. Chef Danny prepared special meals for her based on her requests separate from his gourmet menus for those days. Danielle, the bartender delivered those meals to her & requested to sit with her while Mother ate. The Danube River was flooded and early on in the cruise, the captain Ludo Schef became concerned that we wouldn't make our next destination based on a very low bridge, so he made the decision to by pass Passau in order to make Regensburg. All the other ships behind us had to wait for the river to subside. Because of his knowledge of the river we were able to complete our cruise. Agnes Hazai, our Cruise Manager, had us bused back to Passau so we wouldn't miss the beautiful & historical city. All other tours were comped for the rest of the trip!!! We celebrated my mother's 92 birthday & I asked our hotel manager, Irma Erdeji to have a cake made for all the passangers. She only charged me their cost! 5 stars is not enough. Read Less

This was our second UniWorld cruise, and my third river cruise. UniWorld by far exceeds other river cruise experiences that I or any of my friends have enjoyed. While most of the European river cruise companies follow similar itineraries, the total cost and experience vary from one line to another. On this ship, Captain Heinrich mingled with passengers and greeted us as we returned from excursions. The crew were attentive, friendly, and accommodating--to a person. Food was excellent--in fact we returned to the ship for meals at times when we were on shore nearby and had excellent dining opportunities. Dinners were outstanding and it was always fun to find out what the Chef would prepare for us next. The menu offered wide varieties, local flavor, consistently delicious and served by the most outstanding staff. The staterooms are very comfortable, quiet, with the feel of a nice hotel. The bed was very comfortable. Excursions were just the right length, led by very good guides, and we often felt sympathy for other (non UniWorld) passengers whose excursions had them walking lengthy uphill climbs or altered itinerary due to rain. When about 6 river ships had a high water delay (at a loch) the UniWorld Cruise Manager and Captain absolutely worked miracles to arrange excursions of excellence. The excursions we were able to select, while the ship was waiting for the loch to open, were some of the best. On a holiday Sunday and Monday, coach, drivers and guides were arranged. It was (to the passengers) as if this were effortless. The transport and guides were known and vetted by UW thus the quality of our excursions were excellent! (While some of the other ships had passengers onboard with no excursions). We had village, castle, vineyards, cathedrals, art and architecture with or without plenty of walking. There was time to see and experience most of the towns and villages on our own if we so desired. A guide in Trier, an archeologist, was amazing in his ability to make the town's Roman ruins and history come alive. We are already planning two more UW cruises. This is the best way to get to know where, in Europe, you would like to come back for vacation. About cost. UW is all-inclusive. Tips, excursions, drinks (I never saw anyone intoxicated) special dining, everything. Once booked there is nothing to worry about, they WILL take care of you. Right down to the flight we booked through UW, they made the experience truly carefree. Returning guests are given a discount. Read Less

This was our 6th cruise with Uniworld and our third on the River Queen. A couple of things we love about Uniworld are the ships are unique as opposed to being cookie cutter and they do an outstanding job of hiring and training the staff. We always get a suite primarily for the larger bathroom with two sinks instead of one plus you have a butler which is very nice. The food is very good and plentiful and the service in the dining room is outstanding. This cruise was unique but I believe it demonstrates why we will always sail with Uniworld. High water on the Rhine forced a disruption with the itinerary the first several days. Piet, the cruise director, made adjustments on the fly and was still able to get most of the planned excursions taken care of to everyone's satisfaction. The afternoon of the 6th day my wife had a bad bicycling accident while on a ride with a group. The following evening it became obvious that she needed medical attention. The morning of the 8th day Piet and irma, the Hotel Manager, arranged for a taxi to take my wife, myself and our Butler Marko to the emergency room in Trier. Marko stayed with us the entire time and at 12:15 we were on our way back to the River Queen for a 1pm sailing. My wife suffered a concussion, 4 broken ribs and a bruised kidney. They wanted to keep her in the hospital for three days but she declined because she knew she would get good care and rest on the ship. That was a huge understatement. The staff took amazing care of her over the balance of the cruise. Marko was at her beck and call. He checked with her before every meal to see if she was hungry and then took her order which he then delivered to her while she was in bed. He would check in multiple other times throughout the day to see if there was anything he could get her or do. We cannot say enough about the care and attention my wife received. We have always had great service on all of our Uniworld cruise but this was over the top. If you are considering a river cruise Uniworld needs to be at the top of your list. Read Less

Fist of all, I can't say enough about Uniworld the company. What a class act! And the company focus of customer service permeates all through the staff. As an example: The Rhine River was at flood stage during our cruise, making it impossible to navigate some of the lochs. All of the river cruise ships had to dock in one area and wait for the river level to drop before continuing. While the rest of the cruise ship passengers sat around in the same place for two days, Uniworld made special arrangements for buses to take us to the towns and tours we otherwise would have missed (at no additional cost). Once the river dropped, every ship moved on, but we were the only ones that never missed a stop! AND, Uniworld later gave us a sizeable discount on a future cruise just for the inconvenience. The River Queen is an absolutely beautiful ship, Every detail is lovely. The ship is immaculate and extremely warm and inviting. Our cabin was perfectly appointed and extremely comfortable. It was a luxurious oasis to retire to every evening. The staff was absolutely outstanding. Polite, helpful, extremely competent and friendly. It felt like we were among friends the entire trip. The food was varied, plentiful and delicious. The itinerary was perfect. Not only did we travel the Rhine from Basil Switzerland to Amsterdam, but we went up the Mosel River to Luxembourg. This was the most beautiful part of the trip, and shouldn't be missed! This was an outstanding itinerary on a beautiful boat with a fantastic crew supported by a quality company. I cannot say enough about how impressed we were with Uniworld... So much so we are booked on two more cruises in 2017! Read Less

We have cruised multiple times in the past but this was our first river cruise. OMG! We cruised from Basel, Switzerland down the Rhine River, up the Mosel River to Luxembourg, then back to the Rhine, finishing up in Amsterdam. The itinerary was absolutely fabulous. We had such a wonderful time exploring the various towns along the way. You simply can't beat this itinerary! The River Queen was a beautiful boat, wonderfully appointed, comfortable and a pleasure to cruise on. The crew was no less than outstanding. From the Captain on down, every crew member did their utmost to ensure each guest was comfortable, well taken care of and having a great time. The food was outstanding and the service top notch. Our cabin, while tight space wise, was well appointed and comfortable. Our excursion manager was fantastic. The buses were very clean and comfortable and the drivers were excellent. All of the tour guides in each stop were easy to understand, extremely knowledgeable and attentive to questions and/or concerns. Entertainment on board was limited, but there was never a lack of things to do. Overall, we could not have been more impressed with our Uniworld experience. It was well worth the money! Read Less
