We just returned from a cruise on the Ruby Princess with the intent of a sea burial for our son's ashes. He was an avid traveler, loved cruising and wanted to be near his favorite Puerto Vallarta. We traveled with our daughter and her family and had requested the burial at sea in advance. We didn't really know what to expect but it could not have been nicer. We were told what day (2nd sea day) and given the location to meet someone from the staff who would escort us to a private location at the rear of the ship. In addition to a couple of staff members from Customer Services, Commodore Romero, the ship's captain, also joined us. He read a beautiful poem and then gave us a copy and also a certificate that gave us the latitude/longitude and it was recorded in the ship's log. Even though the burial of one's son is a tragic event, this gave us a pleasant, positive memory and a little closure. We are truly grateful for the kindness of the staff and the Captain. Read Less

3rd year in a row on the Ruby. Several small things are going to make me look elsewhere next cruise. Beware of drink card. We had it with are package this cruise, otherwise Id be more disappointed. For some reason Princess must of got tired of making milk shakes because they weren't included this trip. Last year when we booked they were included? Canned pop wasn't included either. Our room was the bright spot, always clean and beds were always turned down. Food in dining room seemed to be alright, but service was so so. Buffet was just a buffet. Thought since we were going on Mexican cruise we might get some Mexican food. NOPE! Not even a taco bar! Pirate ship in Puerto Vallarta was amazing value. Food was unbelievable for breakfast and lunch. Open bar the whole time, awesome entertainment. Would suggest it to anyone, super nice crew and a cool old ship. One real fun thing onboard was the escape room. Was put together good and challenging. We did beat it! Read Less

We like the smaller ports of La Paz and Loreto. We have all done the Mexican Riviera and wanted to introduce the gulf to those that had not been. Some in our group (14) saw whales, dolphins, a turtle, flying fish and 4 went on a whale shark encounter. Everyone that took excursions enjoyed them. We will do this itinerary again. We are all CA residences and any time we do not have to fly, it is a reason to cruise! Both embarkation and disembarkation went quickly and smoothly. We enjoyed the food, entertainers and service. We missed having speaker/lecturer/historian or naturalist. All but 2 couples had balconies. We prefer fixed seating, so had two tables for 6 and rotated. Princess has the best rewards program, 2 couples were Elite, 3 Platinum, 2 Ruby. We are booked on Jan 3,'18 Star Princess to Hawaii and Alaska on Grand June 5'18. Read Less

We took this cruise because it stopped at La Paz and Loreto. We had cruised to Mexico before, but not to these ports. The port at La Paz is about ten miles from downtown, but there is a free shuttle bus. At Loreto, we got off the ship and hired a taxi to give us a tour around this small town. There is a beach to walk down. The main attraction is the old mission church. Near the church, there are many small shops. We also stopped at Puerto Vallarta. We took a Princess shore excursion. It included a city tour, visit to a tequila factory, a stage show with Mariachis and folklorico dancers, and it included lunch at a beachfront restaurant. The stage show was terrific. The ship's passengers were older, mostly 70-90 years old. Many of them had those walkers with a seat. They sometimes filled the elevators during peak times. We ate a six course dinner at the specialty restaurant, Share, which is a Curtis Stone venue. It was a gastronomic experience. We ate most of our dinners in the dining room. The service was outstanding and the food was great. We stayed in a mini-suite with a balcony. We like having a couch to sit on in our room. The balcony was small but adequate. The steward was attentive. We did have a problem with our toilet. The plumber had trouble figuring out what was wrong with it. We used the Princess transportation to get from the airport to the ship and back to the airport. It took longer than expected to get the bus to the ship. Going back to the airport went smoother. Luggage had to be outside our cabin door the night before disembarkation. We were given colored tags to put on our bags and we were assigned a group number to get off the ship. Disembarkation went faster than expected. Once off the ship we went through customs then were directed to our luggage area. It was easy to find our luggage since it was color coded. Once outside, we were directed to the bus. I had hoped to see whales on this cruise, but I didn't. It may have been a little early in the season. Read Less

This is our 7th Princess cruise in the past six years, and this one was by far the worst experience of the seven. It wasn't horrible, but it had no WOW factor. Every aspect of the trip was the same or slightly degraded from past Princess cruises. Some people may like the same "nothing ever changes" part of Princess cruising, but I am not one of them. From the dining room menus to the shows, it felt like the movie Ground Hog Day, with Bill Murray. The ship is in good working condition, so no complaints there. Loved the cabin. Had a mid-ship obstructed view ocean view cabin with no obstruction. Also next to the elevators. We loved the new beds. Very comfortable. Room steward was excellent, but never really have ever had a bad one. The dining was a bit of a letdown. The buffet, which was always excellent, is now very mediocre. A lot of high quality items, we used to enjoy are no longer there. Lots of low quality items repeated on a daily basis. Would have been a huge bust, except the last sea day lunch was excellent. They had shrimp, mussels, ribs, and other very tasty stuff. We wondered why the other days weren't like this. Main dining room menus don't seem to have ever changed. Could be good or bad depending how you look at it. Food was competently done but nothing was that memorable. For the most part the dining room staff did a solid job, with a few glitches. Crown Grill kind of a disappointment. For $58 plus a tip, it doesn't now seem to be worth it. International Café, pizza, and grill were to be as expected. They are good places for a snack. We realized that 2 of the 3 production shows haven't changed in the close to 6 years that we were last on the Ruby Princess. The fly-in entertainers saved the day. Whitney Houston tribute singer Cheaza and comedian Carlos Oscar were well worth the time to attend, and put on very enjoyable shows. We enjoyed the Mariachi's. They seemed to work those 3 guys 24/7. Pianist Colin Salter did a great tribute to Billy Joel in the Explorer's Lounge one night. The party band "Hot Funk" were not out cup of tea. Trivia was a plenty. It was our first time to the Mexican Riviera, and probably the last. We greatly prefer the Caribbean. We went to the Marriot in Puerto Vallarta on a day pass. Good deal, with a very nice pool area. Couldn't go into the water due to rip tides. In Mazatlán, we took a last second tour, booked in the port area. Saw the little they had to see, in 2 hours, and had lunch at Pancho's. Wanted another beach day, but it was very overcast and gloomy, so we made the best of it. In Cabo San Lucas, it rained in the morning, and with tendering and the short day decided to stay on the ship. Wife had a horrible experience in the hair salon. Hair dresser botched her hairdo, and had to have another stylist come in and try to fix it. 2 hours of aggravation, with a rude and aggressive salon manager to boot. Service was solid around the ship, but it feels like areas are a little thin on staff, and the employees are overworked. In conclusion we enjoyed the getaway, but hope to get that WOW factor back into our next cruising vacation. We loved the Royal Princess, and would do that ship again in a heat beat. Or, we may give Celebrity a try. Read Less

There are many good and interesting itineraries. I choose a date to coinside with my work being closed. Also, I keep in mind that I am traveling with an aged parent and both of us are struggling with health issues. So the flight down to Los Angeles from Vancouver Canada is a short 2 and a half hours. With all of our cruises, we always fly the day before the cruise. this helps relieve the stress. It is winter, one never knows what the weather is going to be doing. Last year, mom and I did a short cruise to Cabo and back. This cruise would take us to two additional ports. Places that we have not seen before. We have sailed on the Ruby before. There are several of the ships we have sailed on a couple of times. This year we wanted to make sure that we were not rushed or stressed. One excelent option now is the Princess ez-air. Book everything with Princess. We chose to fly down the day before and return the day after the cruise ended. We spent a half day at Disneyland before and after the cruise. We stayed at one of the Marriott properties on the Friday and on the Saturday of our return we stayed at the Embassey Suites in Anaheim. We used Prime Time Shuttle to get us from the Airport to the hotels and to and from the hotels to the cruise ship terminal. My mother had pre requested wheel chair assistance. In Los Angeles a princess representative takes you to check in and through security. Then to a holding area. There you wait for a member of the ships crew to take you on board. Yes it takes a little longer. But it is the safest way if a person has mobility problems. We had one of the rooms with a belcony. For two persons, there is plenty of room. But note, I am a former Princess employee, so I know the size of a crew cabin to compare. As I am a night supervisor for a Resort in Canada. I tend to notice maintenance issues. Not to bring anything against the ship or the hard working crew that take care of her. A few of the things were taken care of quickly, others were looked after over the week of our trip. Debbie who was our cabin stewart, is a supper star. she was a help. She worked around us. As mom was recovering from a medical problem. she opted not to get off the ship. So she spent more time in the room. Debbie was around to give help. One of the things about a cruise, you choose to do as much or as little as you want to do. My favorit activities are the fruit and vegtable carving and the martine making demonstration. Watching events like ring toss or the trivia games. There is always more to do or see than can been done in 7 days. Dining was very good. I know that many will say the same about their wait staff. We choose traditional dining and the later seating. Our waiter Vangie is the best. Her choices as what was best to eat for any given night were very good. Oliver our Junior waiter, he worked so hard. carring those heavy trays of food. We had good table companions. It is always so sad to say good bye at the end. It is excelent staff, that make the cruise. We had some good weather and some not so good. We are on vacation. You can do nothing about the weather. Puerto Vallarta our first stop. It was sunny and hot. I did the "hidden Mexico and Traditions" It was a good tour. Got to see parts of Mexico away from the city. We traveled in a large converted truck. We went through a small town, then drove up a partly dried river bed up the mountain, then to a private home to see how toria's are made from scratch. Then we are taken to a restaurant at the sea shore were we are given more food and a little free time to wander on the beach. Note this tour is very bumpy. You are bounced around. But it is fun and educational. the next port was Mazatlan. I took the "Estuary Cruise and Tropical Birds". I love birds. You get a chance to see many differant water type birds. Harans, pelicans and turkey vultures. You transfer from a boat to a tractor pulled trailer and travel along a beach to the restaurant. you have some free time, before going back to the boat to make the short trip to the mainland and back to the ship. Our last stop was Cabo San Lucas. This was a very rainy day. I did not have a tour. I went a shore to do a little shopping and got soaking wet. But 2 hours after leaving Cabo, we were into sunny weather again. This trip was very good. It went by so quick. The shows were good. The juggler was good. The comedian was good and family friendly. We have taken this Sea of Cortez cruise four times now. We enjoy it, we visit a friend in La Paz. This cruise had some high and low points. High points for food, our Traditional Late Seating Tablemates and Wait Staff. Low points for scheduling ballroom dancing and Production shows. They changed the scheduling to make it difficult for Traditional Late Seating cruises to dance before dinner, and they didn't schedule any Production Shows at 10:00, so we saw none. Dancing and Production shows are two of the reasons we love sea days, and two of our major reasons for cruising. Food was excellent in the Botticelli Dining Room, and at the Horizon Court Buffet. The new bedding is wonderful, makes sleeping very comfortable. We don't see any of the entertainment except the Production Shows because we usually dance instead. Ports were good. I wish they would go to Ensenada instead of San Diego. We thoroughly enjoyed this cruise. Read Less

My wife and I have been on a few cruises and I guess we were just spoiled on the Queen Mary 2. We decided to save money and try a Princess cruise for once. My parents always liked them. The room was OK but the same dirt and hair was there from the previous people. The deck chairs are dirty and we had to have them check for bed bugs because my wife was bit by something. I ended up going to the ship's doctor for an ear infection ($200.00 US). My doctor here said it here said I had to catch it there. The buffet smelled like I was in an old folks home. We decided to forget the buffet and pay the extra at the Crown Grill ($58.00 plus tip) and the food was just so-so. the service was good though..The Salty Dog ($24.00 plus tip). They should try to not make trendy pub food and make tasty pub food. The burger was not bad but to pay extra it should be better. Last but not least was Share with their multiple courses. I would have to say this was the least impressive. Food was not hot when it is supposed to be and it seemed we were in a factory. ($58.00 plus tip). As for the anytime dinning restaurants service was poor and the food was just so-so. The Pizza was OK but I don't know how they can say they have the best pizza on the sea. Burgers and fry's were what we expected. There was a bright light and that was Vines wine bar and Crooners bar. The people there were great to talk too and more than helpful. We sometimes just went to Vines and ate the sushi because it was better then the restaurant food. The ship is looking tired and the staff seem worn out. We have decided that since this is an example of economy cruising we will now go every 2 years and go back to the Queen Mary 2. Like I said.... You get what you pay for. Read Less

Choose this cruise for new ports never before visited. Very relaxing. Wife completed three snorkel experiences and loved all three, especially whale sharks. Have been on the Ruby three times and never disappointed. Embarkation and disembarkation were easy with plenty of port and Princess staff to direct you to the locations needed. The mini suite was great and the new bedding is the best, food was good as usual, and the staff members were excellent. Love the Crown Grill Steakhouse, but wish Sabatini's was also on the Ruby. The ports of Cabo, La Paz, Lorito, Puerto Vallarta were all good, particularly favored Lorito. Lots of old charm, friendly people and no one hitting you up for cigars or silver like in Cabo. Can't get to La Paz without a thirty minute shuttle bus (free) service. If you like tacos, while in La Paz have lobster or shrimp tacos at the Bismark Restaurant, they are to die for and the beer is cold. Entertainment on board was good. Miss having a presentation on upcoming ports to tell us what to expect, places to see, history of the port, etc. Read Less

Sorry to be negative as I don't read negative reviews. There are so many areas Princess has fallen behind. There older ships are tired and should have been brought in for refurnishing earlier and not gotten to this point. . We;re Elite and mostly sail with Princess, but why would Princess ruin one of their great perks. This is the Elite lounge. They raised the price of drinks and reduced the selection. Our party had to send our drinks back and reorder another drink because of how bad they tasted. This was primary because of the limited selection. Next huge disappointment was Movies Under the Stars. We always look forward to watching a movie when we sail into warm nights, however not one movie was a new release. Some of the movies ,Eddie the Eagle,Grease,Scrooge, Spiderman Homecoming, Jurassic Park the Lost World. If you missed out on some sleep,go to one of these movies to catch up. In the comment section with Princess I always write in---Why not take the Basketball court and really improve it into a Pickle ball court. Paint lines, put up a decent net, protect it more from the wind. Basketball shootout is a poorly attended event. Passengers will play Pickle ball all day. Read Less
