Rhine Discovery (Rhine Getaway), Basel to Amsterdam, October 2015 on the Viking Sun. Just returned from the holiday. Second tine with Viking but as this was a different class of ship at a different time of year I’m not going to compare the two. In short, brilliant!! The Sun is an older ship but it was difficult to tell. Clean, light and comfortable with all public areas well appointed, 2 dining areas, the main restaurant for a served meal with an alternative lunch menu in the lounge. Stateroom - We had the basic room 170 sq ft with water level window. More than enough room, again very well appointed (no fridge unfortunately). Food - outstanding in every respect. Plenty of choice, beautifully prepared and presented. Chef Mario and his team have many other choices available (not necessarily on the menu) and also catered for those with allergies, etc. Complimentary wine - good quality and continually on offer during meal times. Staff - worked extremely hard to make sure we were well looked after. Our maid (Jenny) was excellent, visiting the stateroom several times every day ensuring the room was always tidy. Service staff likewise, waiters/waitresses attentive and always on hand as were the bar staff. Programme Director (Boyan) and Concierge (Andrea, I think, apologies if this is not spelt correctly) did not stop working to ensure the holiday was a complete success and nothing was too much trouble. Entertainment - Excellent pianist in the lounge. Eccentric to say the least. He was not just a classical pianist, this guy could play anything. We had Elton John (with the big glasses), Elvis (with the wig), Robbie Williams and a host of others. Final night party was particularly good. Other events and presentation were also very informative. Ports of call and tours - interesting places and the tours (by bus and on foot) were well organised and informative. Could have been a bit warmer but that’s what you risk if you book in October. The weather is probably the one thing Viking can’t do anything about. Value for money - what I paid for what I got was outstanding value. In summary - Considering the time of year (with the cooler weather) we had a great time, met some interesting people, saw some beautiful cities and eat some fantastic food. The Sun is leaving the Viking fleet at the end of 2015, but that is no refection of the state of the ship nor the service on board. Thanks (again) Viking, we’ll be back. Read Less

My husband and I took an incredible first cruise from Basal, Switzerland to Amsterdam on the Viking Sun. It was a first class experience from the minute we stepped on to the ship until the morning that we left. Each included excursion was lead by knowledgable and personable guides. The extra excursion we chose was through a winter palace and hunting lodge and was equally well done. We can't praise all of the staff enough to do them justice. The captain was as friendly as all of his crew. We realize we were very lucky to have spectacular weather, but nothing will ever replace our memory of our morning of cruising past the castles on the Rhine. Thank you, Viking. We look forward to our next journey with you! Read Less

Having been on a river cruise before but not really impressed with the ship we thought we would take the plunge and see what Viking could offer as we had received various brochures and seen the adverts. Our expections were exceeded as we were impressed from the time we booked. Viking looked after us every step of the way. The itinery arrived one month in advance so it gave us time to look at what we were going to do. It was exciting. On arriving in Amsterdam for the cruise we were taken to the ship and shown to the cabin and from the start we were delighted. It was spacious and airy with a picture window so we had views even if when we were in the cabin. It was located on the main deck near reception which we thought may be noisy with people passing but it wasn't. We were able to take a walk in to Amsterdam as the ship was located right in the centre which was an ideal location. In the evening we went for dinner which was on the same deck as our cabin and as there is no table allocation we were a bit aprehensive about this but we need not be as we chose a table for 10 and met some lovely people from America, Canada and the UK. We stayed at that table throughtout the voyage and we thoroughly enjoyed the company. It was out choice to do that but people did move around and we met a lot of different people. The waiters were lovely. Friendly and helpful. Later in the voyage I went to the galley to see where the food it prepared and was stunned to find the food for the ship, which was superb, was created in such a small space. All the staff on board were equally friendly and helpful. We had various ports of call throughout and shore excursions which were well organsised. We were allocated our coaches and times for the excursions and everthing went like clockwork. Our visits included the windmills at Kinderdijk which were really good. Our trip to Cologne Cathedral was also good but it was such a wet day it did hinder our enjoyment slightly. There was also a trip to the Fortress at Koblenz which was also well organsied then Heidelberg castle and Speyer which was a lovely town. We visited Colmar and Freiburg and the highlight of our tour the Mercedes factory visit instead of the Black Forest tour which we could have taken. The factory tour was obviously not for everyone but everyone who did it was impressed with the whole thing. Facinating watching all the cars being made and each one already sold. There was a resident pianist on board who was a real treasure. He played during the voyage and was able to mix and match to the mood. We also were entertained by a classical couple and we had daily treats by the chef and bar staff such as the Rudesheim Coffee and German Teatime. Superb! The disembarkation was done with military expertise. Lables for suitcases supplied to cabins, times for disembarkation and coaches/taxis waiting at the quayside. Seamless. It was such a pleasure to be on the Viking Sun but we heard that this is the last year for it as it is being taken out of service. It was a lovely ship but the newer ones are supposed to be better so we will find out in future as we fully intend to do another. We enjoyed it so much we bought some credit on board to pay for a future trip. This will not be for a couple of years as we like to do different things but definately on our radar for the future. To sum up a wonderful ship which we were delighted with and would not have liked to miss. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we loved everything about it! We expected a good vacation, but our expectations were far exceeded. The room was a good size, comfortable bed and furnishings, cleaning staff extremely good and never interfered. Food was excellent. Tour staff very helpful and tours were very enjoyable. Th highligh was meeting and visiting with other travelers. Our only complaint was the weather, but umbrellas were available anytime. We particularly enjoyed a classical Musician duo the last evening. It was great never having to be stressed about transfers or anything. Loved it and will definitely take another Viking cruise and recommend to others. Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and it was for our 25th Anniversary. It was wonderful in every way. We stayed at the Hilton Doubletree the night before the cruise which was within walking distance from the train station for airport train, and a short walk to dock for the Viking Sun. Great hotel and staff. The Sky Lounge on the top floor gives you an incredible view of Amsterdam with a map so you know what you are viewing. The staff on the Viking Sun was superb and we never wanted for anything. The Captain and the Program Director were always available and friendly, as were everyone on the staff. The meals were outstanding with many choices and everything so fresh, and everything perfectly cooked and presented. Every meal was delightful. The included wine choices each day were great and complemented the meals. We could not help but gain weight even though we were so active on all the included shore excursions at each port, and with exploring some towns on our own. Cookies and various tea and coffee drinks were available in the area before entering the lounge every day and evening. The tours were also fantastic from the transportation on the new and comfortable motor coaches to the knowledgeable tour guides speaking to us on individual audio headsets on all the amazing sites we visited. We enjoyed the nightly programs in the Lounge too. It was always entertaining and fun. It was so easy to meet new friends and share the day's experiences Everything was so organized and went so smoothly, making it so relaxing and worry free as everything was taken care of for you. We loved it and look forward to taking another Viking Cruise soon. Super!! Read Less

'For a Rhine River Cruise, choose Viking'. This was the advice from friends for our first river cruise. We were not disappointed, 5 star throughout. We sailed on Viking Sun from Basel to Amsterdam in a very well equipped upper deck stateroom with French balcony. Every member of the crew was exceptional. We were greeted every day with smiling faces and offers of help to ensure we made the most of our holiday. The restaurant provided a 'dining experience' at every sitting. The quality of the food and service being excellent. On board entertainment was always on hand, with enthusiastic crew encouraging us all to take part and as they should, not taking no for an answer! Thank you Viking. We shall see you again in the future. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and it was such a great experience that we have booked our next cruise on the Danube for August 2016. Although the cruise started from Rotterdam rather than Amsterdam, which we had not been informed about, this was quickly forgotten. The shore excursions were excellent and varied and allowed us to see many of the different places on the Rhine. The cruise along the Rhine was enjoyable and the weather helped to make the experience better than expected. The staff and service were excellent and everybody could not do enough for us, especially my wife who is a Coeliac. Her every need was catered for by all the restaurant and bar staff. The ship had all the facilities that we required and the quality of the cabins met all our expectations. We went on some of the additional excursions the best and most enjoyable being the trip to Mount Titlis during our stay in Lucerne after the cruise. Entertainment on board was relaxed and in pleasant surroundings in the bar was very appreciated. Overall the whole experience was a pleasure and would congratulate Viking on making our first cruise experience one that we will never forget. Read Less

Viking staff were fantastic through out the saga, the concierge made about 10 hours of fruitless calls keeping me informed at all stages. They laundered my clothes, ( wife splits clothes between us) with out charge so kept us going even giving a bottle of sparkling wine t o drown our sorrows you cannot get better service than that. A group of 10 adults went on the Amsterdam to Basel Rhine river cruise. Being a river cruise there is plenty to see land side and frequent stops provided a taster for further exploration. The tours were well researched, the guides very knowledgeable and the individual receiver devices meant you could keep up with the commentary even if you could not keep up with the guide. Two of our party had dietary requirements which were catered for with skill and variety. The meals were superb and varied apart from one evening where everything was a derivative of mushrooms. Wine and other alcoholic drinks were served with meals at no further cost - this being sufficient for most of our party for the remainder of the evening. Entertainment was excellent with a resident pianist and other evening entertainment on four of the seven nights. We travelled to Amsterdam via Eurostar from London and Brussels. The service was first class, the journey smooth and comfortable. The only downside was the stopover in Brussels and Paris, on the return, which was too long and we felt could have been spent in one of the VIP lounges. There was an optional two day break in Amsterdam or Lucerne at the start or end of the holiday. We did not do this but my recommendation is to take this option as passengers do not really see much of these cities due to the sailing schedule. Read Less

Even the air trip from Chicago to Amsterdam to Basel and from Amsterdam to Chicago was outstanding on KLM. The service was excellent without being intrusive. The excursions were all well planned and conducted professionally. Only on the last excursion when we were given a choice of activity and there was a mistake on the description of the length of the walk to and from the site was there any problem. I was very satisfied with the trip and I made many new friends because of the work of the crew and the guides. Thank you for an excellent experience. Read Less

Having only previously only been on a sea cruise which we did not enjoy due to bad weather, too many guests, too much vibration from the engine etc., we joined the Viking Sun with an open mind. The travel to the port was very well organized, without undue delays, which gave a good start to our holiday. When we got onboard, from the word go, we received a warm welcome which continued throughout the cruise. When I booked this cruise, I asked for an upgrade if a cabin became available and fortunately one came available after the first night. Without this upgrade we would have been disappointed with the D Stateroom that we initially booked. With only around 180 guests, this made is much easier to meet people and get around the ship. We enjoyed the excursions and the flexibility of having additional excursions, which we did take up. It was also helpful to have the choice when to return back to the ship during the 'city visits'. The friendly service we received at 'meal times' was excellent continued during the week, the entertainment was good but would have appreciated more variety. We enjoyed the cruise very much, the disembarkation was very well organized. Just one problem to end with, was having to change at Paris Airport in the short time available following a delay in the flight from Basel Airport. It took about an hour to get to the correct terminal, just in time. We enjoyed the cruise so much, so we have already booked next year for the Romantic Danube cruise. Read Less

Every part of the trip was outstanding. Pre- trip in Amsterdam was excellent, very nice hotel, trip advisors were very helpful. Every part of the cruise was well organized. They even made extra accommodations for the extreme heat in Germany, providing cool drinks or cool wash cloths upon our return from excursions. Air conditioning onboard was perfectly adequate to handle the heat. Buses on shore excursions were also comfortably cool. Service and meals onboard were excellent; despite the heat, we loved the soups at lunch! We usually took our soup & salad lunches up on deck so we could enjoy the scenery. The deck was partially covered to protect from the sun. We really didn't participate in any of the entertainment - we preferred taking a glass of wine up on deck to watch the sunset/moon rise. I'd been looking for ages at the Viking Advertisements on TV and finally decided, expensive or not, I was going to go! Also decided to thank my good friend Beate for all her kindness to myself and my husband by asking her to come as well, all expenses on me. (My husband has Alzheimer's Syndrome and cannot travel) We were both worn out with work and worry, but from the minute we boarded the plane, we began to feel better...and things, after that, just got better and better. Once aboard and in our cabin, I decided that my clothes were too creased to be decent, so trotted off to Reception and asked if they could be ironed. "Go back to your cabin and someone will be there in a few minutes to collect them" said the delightful young lady at the desk. They weren't there in a few minutes - they were waiting outside the door! My clothes were returned, beautifully pressed about 45 minutes later. Beate was feeling chilly, so off to the desk I went again, and blankets were immediately provided. I'd left my curling irons at home, but lo and behold! - that nice young lady provided them and allowed me to keep them till we disembarked at Basel... Every single member of staff, no matter what their personal difficulties - and there must have been some of them - were nevertheless smiling and cheerful, greeting one with a "good Morning/Afternoon/Evening - right from the cleaners up to the Captain. At first, we found the coffee rather bland, but a word with a waiter and we were given double strength coffee for the rest of the voyage. That's the only culinary criticism I have. The food was delicious, so much so that it is hard to single out anything for high praise; however, I have to say I'll always remember with pleasure the soup at one of the themed evenings. My memory is getting awfully bad, but being now an O B E (Over B....y Eighty) - I'm sure you'll forgive that little blank. We ate so much that in the evenings we marched around the deck ten times each night, in an effort to keep the flab at bay. All of the waiters were smiling and chirpily cheerful and not averse to a mild joke now and then, which was great, human beings, not starched robots. We would have liked to go on excursions more often, but that is only because the temperature was so horribly high (on at least one day 109F) that it was safer for us to stay on board and luxuriate in the Air Conditioned lounge, library or cabin, or stroll along the river bank if there were trees. We loved Amsterdam, Cologne and Lucerne. made all the more interesting by the knowledgeable guides. I did manage to go to the Fort in the terrible heat - just to take fotos for my War-gaming son - and the guide there was not just informative but also highly amusing, which I enjoyed very much. The entertainment wasn't as good as that on my first cruise, last year. This may be perhaps that since that was on the Danube, the local entertainers were more colourful, both in dress and vivacity. (I'm taking a Viking cruise on the Danube next year!) Disembarkation was well organised and easy, even in that heat. The Schweizerhof in Lucern was, of course, superb and our journey home went very smoothly. Thanks to everyone for our lovely holiday. We both came home refreshed, revived and ready to take on the world! Read Less

The food was very good with a wide choice at all meals and the speciality nights were interesting. This was our first Viking cruise and we absolutely loved it. The food was great, the service impeccable and the ambiance just what we were looking for. After having done so many large ships, this was so relaxing and what a vacation should be, only fuss when you want it. We were impressed with the fact that the waiters and Cruise Director remembered our names and tuned into our needs. The ship I understand has been retired now, but it was beautiful and classy. Our state room with a French Balcony window was perfect and had everything we wanted at our fingertips. But what really impressed us most was how organized everything was, especially the excursions. It was so nice not to have to surround the tour guide to hear what we were trying to see. Instead, the earphones and transmitters we all wore meant we could walk a block away and still hear what was being said. So that being said we have already signed up for our next Viking cruse and are bringing our kids (in their 30s) along. Read Less

Our cruise was a mix of some very very good experiences and some very very bad ones. First the good, the ships staff and the various Viking people we interacted with were all wonderful. The food was excellent and our cabin was first rate (and well cared for). The tours were also excellent and the guides were knowledgable. We liked the fact that we could participate in a tour or simply choose not to. The river views are magnificent and walking around the cities in the afternoon at our own pace was very nice. Now the very very bad. Although not Vikings fault, we could not board at the advertised embarkation, instead we needed to taxi for over an hour to the next port to the north because of high water conditions. That extra time on top of the full day of flying was difficult. We arrived just in time for dinner, however we missed the first day's orientations. On the third day both my wife and I along with dozens of other passengers became very sick with some kind of illness. This lasted three days and we as well as many other guests could not leave our cabins. The staff was very attentive to our situation and provided round the clock room service. Dispite these issues we enjoyed this trip and have already booked a second trip with Viking. Read Less

Cruised on the Viking Sun Aug 24-31,2014 from Amsterdam to Basel, also did the added 2 nights in Lucerne, Switzerland. We were in Room 128, and while the cabin was very small it was more than sufficient. I am glad I didn't spend the extra money to be on a higher deck. We spent very little time in our cabin. From the time we got off the plane in Amsterdam until the time we were dropped off at airport in Zurich for our return flight, Viking was with us and guiding us every step of the way. Every member of the staff was fantastic. Food was excellent and beer, wine and soft drinks were included in the price. Included excursions were very well planned with guides that were very knowledgeable to give you a memorable experience in every port we stopped at. The view of the Rhine while cruising was spectacular. There is not one single complaint that I have about this experience. The ship has a capacity of 198 passengers and met some great people while on board that week. This is much different than the big ocean liners we were used to. With so few people it gave us a chance to meet and talk to many of our fellow passengers. When our cruise was over Viking provided a bus to Lucerne for the last two nights of our trip, for those who booked the extension. We were met at the Radisson Blu Hotel by a Viking representative who then provided us with a tour guide for a walking tour of Lucerne. The rest of the afternoon and the next day we were on our own to tour. But there was a Viking representative at the Hotel to help us with any of our needs or suggestions. Radisson Hotel was beautiful, a first class hotel. We took this vacation with another couple who we have traveled with many times and we all loved it. I will definitely be traveling with Viking again. They did a superb job in making our trip the vacation of a lifetime. Read Less

As a treat to ourselves, we decided to indulge in a holiday where we had everything organised for us. We don't like sitting on beaches - we like to be active and see interesting things. Our ship was exactly like the ones we had seen on TV, and we were given a really nice room with our own shower room en suite and a great view of the water - at eye level! Brilliant. We could see swans swimming up to the glass, we saw the inside of a lock in the middle of the night. Loved it! There was a great system for checking us off and on the boat, and once we got used to the way it worked, we felt most secure - no chance of getting lost or left behind. We were able to choose which activities which suited us best, and also the quality i.e. did we want the active or the gentle trip? We really enjoyed the range of activities, especially having our own personal courier in a range of languages. We learnt far more this way than we would have done if we'd been wandering alone. The food was wonderful. In some situations I have problems since I don't eat meat, but I always had a huge choice - served by fantastic waiters with load of humour. Great salads in the middle of the day, so we didn't put on too much weight. Even when we could not get our boat under the bridges and therefore did not reach our expected destination, we were not disappointed - we had local trips instead. Much more fun. We still got to our disembarkation point without any problems - and so careful over security with baggage. We really enjoyed our trip and have already booked into another one on a different river. Excursions were well organised, having to sort out so many people and they were very interesting with good guides. All meals were great, it was so good we both put on a couple of pounds. We liked our cabin it was just big enough and we were well looked after. It was a bit strange watching the water go by at eye level. The only problem with the cabin was the noise of the engine but when we got some ear plugs we could sleep ok. The ship was really nice and well laid out, clean and tidy. From the moment we arrived on the dock - 5 hours early to board - we were treated like a king an queen. A young man greeted us up on the dock, took our bags and invited us to breakfast already in progress and a tour of Basle. It was like getting an extra day!!! The food was amazing, wine at each meal, and the service from the front desk, to housekeeping to the dining room (loved the animated wait staff) to getting on and off the boat for tours to educational sessions to every other aspect was amazing! The tour selection was wonderful as well. And we learned lots about history. Once we arrived on that deck, we were taken care of until the moment we arrived in Amsterdam to end our cruise and even then we were invited on a walking tour of Amsterdam. After this experience, we have already booked our next Viking cruise in April 2015 and will do Viking River cruises to every river they have. First class, elegant and you meet smart, people who like to cruise the way we do. If you are considering Viking, book it now, it will change the way you cruise forever! Read Less

We traveled from Amsterdam to Basel on the Viking Sun in March this year. It was our first river cruise and so we were unsure what to expect. We need not have worried, it was simply wonderful. After arriving in Amsterdam our every need was taken care of. Our luggage was taken care of and appeared in our cabin as if by magic. The staff were so helpful, nothing was too much trouble and they took a genuine interest in us as people. The trips out were excellent, very interesting guides who really knew the areas we were taken to. The extra trip to the Mercedes factory was fascinating and well worth going on. We particularly liked the fact that we were offered bottled water before going on a trip, a thoughtful extra. The entertainment on board was superb and we felt that everybody was catered for. When we had finished our trip in Basel the service did not end there. As we had a late flight we were treated to an extra trip around Basel and then returned to complimentary lunch on board, something that other companies do not seem to provide. On returning home I really felt that that that holiday had been worthwhile and that we had been valued not only as customers but people and that was a very nice feeling. Read Less
