My husband and I, set sail on the Gem in January 2018... we are a younger couple late 20's and have a 4 year old son. STAFF was amazing, very accommodating and friendly, ports were FUN but if your looking for a ship to have fun on... this isn't the one... which blows my mind, because we were almost 6 days at sea... which I thought would be engaging, by at least more family activities... NOT Shows are boring and poor, the cruise director Evan isn't so friendly, and the overall atmosphere of the ship is TIRED. With a small child, and nothing entertaining outside of the ship TV is a MUST! but the channels aboard the GEM were horrible, we watched rerun after rerun of the same pathetic 5 shows. Food and service in all of the dinning halls were okay... they tried to spice life up with Mexican, asian and carribean nights... which was nice, servers were wonderful, but I will not travel Norwegian again. we did not really Love our trip and for the money we paid for ALL of us to sail, I would have really liked to LOVE it Read Less

After 26 cruises, I think I have a little experience to rate this cruise. I purposely waited to see if I would see things differently after settling down after the cruise. After 2 weeks, I don't see things differently, however. The menus left a lot to be desired. The food was not appetizing. The service was terribly slow. Appetizers (taco chips) arrived after the main meal in O'Sheehans Pub. I mean, how long does it take to 'prepare' taco chips? I never received a second glass of water when I requested it twice. The hostess explained that food service was slow because there was not enough grill space to accommodate all of the patrons that were inside because of strong winds outside. We ran out of butter on the 3rd day. The buffet area was often crowded and we had to wait a lot. Then, no seats were available to eat! Choices were minimal. On the other hand, the entertainment was fantastic. The Magician, comedy professionals, and dancers were superb! The clubs were nice. Public areas were clean. Drink service was non-existent though. I thought that Norwegian was supposed to be a step up. Not so. Very disappointed. Read Less

I picked this cruise as a Solo traveler due to a tremendous low rate available and what looked like a fun itinerary. My fare was a Sailaway rate for an Inside cabin, which I was able to upgrade to Oceanview through the NCL bid process. This was my second time on the Gem. The ship is a good size and laid out well. The facilities and varieties of bars and rooms are excellent. Sailing out of NYC is convenient from where I live. Even with the recent cold weather it was a good choice. Our first seaday had very rough seas and the ship rocked noticeably. However, the indoor activities were scheduled and other than the occasional disorienting movements, we all got through it. If I had started the day with Bonine it might have gone better. The cruise staff was probably the biggest "up" for this trip. They were engaging and more than courteous. The cruise director, Lorena, was pleasant but disappeared early on in the cruise and the remainder was run by the assistant director, who was prepared and may as well have been the actual CD. Some of the evening Stardust shows I had seen before. A female singer was on the Gem my previous trip; I had seen Blazing Boots on another ship. The comedy musician was very good. But a Branson ventriloquist on a cruise out of NYC? Seriously? The Tradewinds shops were bland to be kind. Uninteresting merchandise and uninspiring sales. But the biggest "down" was the food. Same unappealing menus and bland food in the MDRs. And the buffet was just not good. Unless you are there to eat the biggest plateful of "whatever they're serving" (and those people were well represented) it just wasn't good. At least O'Sheehan's had short waits. Their food was consistent although the menu is very limited. And again on NCL, and the end of an 11 night cruise, there was a major drop off in selection the last day or two. I expected it and wasn't surprised. Read Less

We took this cruise just because it sailed from New York in the winter and we didn't have to get on a plane. Took similar cruise on the Germ last year. There are pros and cons. Cons: first day out and especially the last day back the seas were very rough. We were pretty woozy all the last day. Our room was on a top deck, 11. Maybe rocking wouldn't be so bad on a lower deck. Don't sail from NY in the winter if you are prone to getting seasick. Food on the Gem is good. Too much repetition in the buffet for lunch (never ate dinner there). Even dining room menu too repetitious, but there was a nice selection. The "piano bar" was an open area in mid ship, with not enough seating. Singer didn't develop any rapport with audience. And it's close to the casino so smoke seeps in. Pros: besides sailing from NY, it's a moderate size ship, easy to get around. Crew was exceptional. Service great. Crew was always cheerful. One of the big pluses is a space called "Great Outdoors" at far back of ship . It's an outside deck, covered by a canvass from the sun, with tables and chairs to eat, play cards,or just relax., it was always quiet, without the noise of the pool band. It had a good selection of food after the buffet closed for every meal, a bar, and coffee and tea all day. Not all NCL ships have this. One of us had some dietary limitations and NCL has a specialist who helped with menu selection. That's a big plus. Show generally very good, on 11 day trip, two comedians, one magician, one ventriloquist, a single who did two shows, acrobats, and three shows by the ship cast. The cast singers/dancer were excellent and lively. So a nice variety. Shows at 7 and 9 pm Read Less

The Gem was clean as a whistle as usual. The service was was wonderful, and the food was spectacular. The weather couldn't be beat, and no flying involved, cruising out of NYC is the best! So, in general, our experience was excellent. Without getting too picky, there were a few disappointments. The smoking policy is NOT enforced enough. They need to have more NO SMOKING signs put up. It wouldn't hurt to have some of their ample security force pounding the beat to instruct smokers to visit a smoking area. Deck 14 Forward is a designate "QUIET ZONE", Security could tell the loud mouths to quiet down! Again, more signs. We always enjoy Le Bistro French restaurant, and I look forward to having a great Roast Duck. They still have Duck, but now it is served shredded. It's like pulled pork meets duck. I won't get that again. My cabin was inside; it more more than adequate, very clean and quiet. We don't spend a lot of time in there except to sleep. The shows were entertaining, and we went most nights. All of the bars we inviting, and the drinks were perfect. We especially like O'Shanhans on deck 8. The gym was loaded with machine and free weights to work off the duck!! We've been on the Gem 6 times, and are going again in a month. Nuff said. Read Less

Lorena the cruise director was absolutely FANTASTIC. She went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time. She took the time to learn people's names. Tim Kaminski's comedy shows were amazing also. The cruise director staff were always happy and kept you entertained. Paul, Paul Newman, Troy and Jeffrey were great. Rev the bartender at Spinaker lounge was AMAZING. He would help me come up with different drinks to try. This was our 3rd NCL cruise and we have loved each one. Looking forward to booking the next one. The service was slow at most of the restaurants and the food would come out lukewarm at best . Modernos was extremely good. I like my meat cooked well done and the 1st time on this cruise we went the waitress asked about meat temperature but did nothing about it. We went again and I had all of my meats cooked well done as I liked. We did the Dolphin Encounter in St Kitts and there are no words to describe it. It is something you must do if you cruise. I did enjoy the ship to a point 1. The TV only had live news channels. The other channels were either about ship or taped old shows. Other ships that I sailed on had all channels ABC, NBC etc. 2. The food was very salty. The BBQ held each day had the same food except for the meat. The same with the buffet. Have to say the food was not the best. 3. No activity around pool except for maybe a game or band that was only for 45 minutes or so and repetitive. Very dead around pool. The ship needs to have a more Caribbean feel. Island music would have been nice around pool at least. The ship was not fun. 4. Public bathrooms need to be cleaned more often. 5. The crew was somewhat friendly. They need to interact more with the people and be more upbeat. 6. Our steward was very nice and helpful 7. The ship was clean Read Less
