I am from Maryland, USA and my wife and I wanted to celebrate our 25 year anniversary in style. You definitely want to get the upgraded suite, we were in room 12226 at rear of ship but on right side. Sun rises were excellent. The room was so large more than 200 SF! With a walk in closet bigger than ours at home. My wife Anita is so jeolous and wants a bigger closet now! LOL. There are people that like to take your spot inline, but in front of you, take your pool chair, etc. But if you stick up, speak up, and tell them no, they will back down. I had a guy butt up to the front of the line to see the host at the registration desk and I told him, that I had been waiting for over 10 minutes and to go to the back of the line. I had a guy steal my pool lounge chair while my wife and I walked around the ship for like 15 minutes. When I got back to my chair I noticed that my towel had been move over to my wife's chair and my chair was slid over to another group. I confronted the gentleman and he said he was sorry and was willing to give me back my chair but I just told him no thank you. Just stick to your guns and you will be fine. We loved the shows, The Vatican, all the churches, I spend $750 upfront on excursions for my wife and me, the first excursion was in Geno and it was the open bus one (it was terrible, the driver flew through the tour, the bus was old, the earpiece plugs into the bus and is not clear to hear, waste of money (But the Aquarium is a must! Unbelievable aquarium, (we have an aquarium in downtown Baltimore but this one has to be four times as large!) etc.. Definitely want to get the drink package, you can not afford not to! And buy it now. Do not wait to get the drink package, on the ship, they hit you up for 15% gratuity and people were trying to fill bottles with water from the dining room. Come on, people it cost money to go on vacation, spent and stop being so cheap!!! The food is not as good as Royal Caribbean. There is no assigned seating but there is assigned dining hall for your cabin and only two seating times available. So I suggest getting the Flex time package where you can go to dinner anytime between 7 PM and 10 PM. Also if you do not feel like eating at the restaurant hall, they only have one other location to eat at and that cost money called Tex Mex restaurant. It costs roughly $20 to $55 euros (for two people total) to get a decent meal there. Oh and the per deim per day per person for gratuity is added automatically to the bill but it is not $7 euros it is now $10 euros! As least for my room! The food was not spectacular. Wife and I got a tour of the spa and fitness center and we both got a free message with our package so I gave my wife both of them. The spa has spectacular views from the front of the ship on 15th floor. We got in the hot tub and it was crouded, the pool temperature on May 23rd 2017 was cool. Felt like 65 degrees. Wife and I do not have kids but the cruise did not have that many kids thank God. Read Less

this cruise looked great from the adverts, not impressed at all. Dining in self service was atrocious, food everywhere people clammering for attention staff so so Restaurants at lunch and breakfast also so so. Dining evening very good service impeccable. Embarkation was quite good although quite rushed. disembarkation similar. Cabin superb as was cabin staff Ship was luxurious but unless you had all inclusive prices horrendous. First time we have been on a cruise that you had to pay for tea and coffee, we were excluded from paying but still other passengers were charged. Entertainment so so, port and shore excursions far too expensive and rushed from the time of disembarkation to getting coaches. Would not choose this ship again as far too big and impersonal, in fact have been put off cruising so not a good experience. Staff overall were excellent in bars etc and were very smart and corteous Read Less

We decided to book a cruise because our friends recommended and they also told us about the yacht club. The service in yacht club was excellent and even our diets (gluten free and lactose free) were professionally taken care. We experienced interesting excursions. Specially we would like to mentioned the excursion to Portofino when we were in the port of Genoa. The ship looks massive outside but as soon as you are inside you forget it. The design is subtly done and you can move from one beautifully decorated space to another. In my opinion the cabin's interior was rather dark, otherwise everything was fine. There was enough space for your clothes. Because of your diets we decided to dine in the yacht club restaurant every night. They could take care that our meals were specially prepared for us. Additional spice to the dining brought the play with the dress codes. Read Less

We are a couple on the 60´s, more than 10 cruises before. Nice looking ship. Very port intensive cruise. Price below competitors. Good bars and lounges. Service very attentive. The line attitude looks cheap, and charge for everything. No toiletries even in a suite. If you buy a drinking package, the only beer available was Heinecken; wines spumante, red, rose and white, period; no choices. Good coffee and liquors in the package. Excellent bars and lounges with above average live music. The main restaurant is very nice, the service is good. We consider the service organization very professional. But, and is a very large but, the food was served in small portions, the ingredients were not first quality (i.e, sirloin steak was not in the menu) and in general the taste and whole experience was far from a satisfactory one, even the pasta and rissoto were not al dente, considering MSC is an italian line. The buffet lacked quality and space organization. Read Less

We spent a good week because the family company we had was great, but the service on the cruise is better. I have been to other shipping companies and this was the first time with MSC and I think some services are better. To start the tour service, I think they should take care of the explanations of the excursions to the clients, they do not give enough information. The dinners are very monotonous, there is no animation of any kind, for example, dinner of the captain and the captain? He does not come to dinner, you go to take a picture with him .. it should be him who comes to see his customers. Dinner in white ... And ...? if .. people wear white And ...? I do not see animation or support on the part of the waiters and so all the nights ... The animation for the day a little loose ... the daytime entertainers do not look for customers, they do not encourage them to go out and participate ... they are not animations that encourage them to participate. We took a person with a wheelchair, we received in the cabin a letter so that any help we needed to call a number and ask for a person and after three days calling and complaining at the reception, we are still waiting for us to be called and we were asked to apologize at least, because no one picked up the phone and the time we got it they answered us in English (we are Spanish) and they told us that there was nobody that could attend to us and they hung up the phone. We complained at the reception and until today ... without solution, thanks to which between us we could find solution, but not thanks to the supposedly special attention that had that person on board by the circumstance of going in wheelchair. Cruise in size, visually huge and where they take care of the boat a lot, but not the customers, appearance of luxury and seriousness that you need to make the customer feel comfortable. The cabin very nice, size and cleanliness, the life that gives the balcony is amazing. I will return and continue to cruise, but with other companies as before, with companies that take care of their customers. Read Less

This was our 4th cruise, and our 3rd in the Mediterranean; we are two mid-30's Americans who live in Switzerland. It was also our first (and last) on MSC Cruise Lines. If everything was executed perfectly, the cruise only had the potential to be mediocre – but time-after-time the staff either made mistakes or were simply rude in a way that really ruined the experience. The issues started even before we boarded. I tried to purchase an add-on to my cruise by contacting my travel agent, who suggested I contact MSC directly. MSC's US based call center said that they could not take a payment from me, and when I asked to talk to a manager, I was told, "my manager won't want to talk to you about this, it's the rule." Then she suggested that I was trying to get her fired. Not a good start. Embarkation: When we arrived at the port in Genoa to start the cruise, embarkation was not bad, but not well explained. As someone who had been on cruises before, I expected to get my cruise card when I checked in. No one explained that it would be on the bed in the room. Just an unusual process. Cabin: The cabin was actually a pleasant surprise; it was very spacious with a lot of storage (we were in an outside cabin on deck 5.) The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was clean enough for an older ship. The cabin steward stayed out of our way, and always did will cleaning the room. Our big problem in cabin 5073 was that every morning at 6:00-6:15 and again at 8:00-8:15 a lot of banging occurred directly under our room. We noticed upon returning to the ship one day that there were large carts under our room, and that this was probably the problem. We were awoken every morning! Meals: Both the food and the service in the main dining room were mediocre-to-disappointing. If you're used to American cruise lines like Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and Carnival, you'll notice a significant drop-off in the quality of the meals. As someone who is used to eating like a European, I was still turned off. There was not one meal that was memorable, and almost every course was left with a "meh" feeling. None of our party ever left dinner saying "that was good!" Additionally, in 6 dinners we had 4 meals served wrong. The one night we tried to order coffee with dessert, it came after dessert and as soon as we got it, they turned up the lights as an indication that it was time to leave. This is just bad service/training. The buffet (Bora Bora in the Front, Pago Pago in the back) was even more disappointing. Meals were repetitive and often cold. One morning when we ordered coffees, they brought my wife the wrong coffee and said "That's what you ordered." The problem is, the person who brought it didn't take our order! There were always seats in Pago Pago, so that's where we usually ate. We became quickly convinced that "Pago Pago" must be Polynesian for "Employee Lounge" because there were always a bunch of employees standing with towels in their hands talking to each other. The worst part of the buffet was they were trying to be a sit down restaurant. They had long lines of people at the door that they wouldn't let in until they had someone to sit them, even though there were plenty of open tables. After waiting, they tried to but us at bar-height table, and when we said no, that we preferred a regular table by a window, the guy just walked away from us and said "Find it on your own." Luckily, we later found a way into the restaurant through the Aft elevators that avoided the line and rude staff. Guest Services: This was the one that really threw off our trip, and why I wouldn't ever take MSC again, or recommend it to Americans. We were traveling with my mother who doesn’t understand temperature in Celsius, each morning she would call the guest relations to ask if they could provide her with the temperature in Fahrenheit. Each day (except one, when an exceptional employee used her private cell phone to look it up) their answer was "no", in various creative forms. She was told things like "You're in Europe, you don't use Fahrenheit here!" or "Check in your daily program" (which was only in Celsius). Finally, my wife and I complained about this to the corporate office (via twitter) and the Concierge reached out to us. She apologized for this (and several other issues noted here) and gave us a bottle of Champagne and strawberries. She also told me that she would address this with guest services. My mom, who was celebrating her 70th birthday, had booked through MSC Cruises USA, so we expected that they would know there would be Americans on board who use Fahrenheit. I told my mom that the Concierge had taken care of it, and she should be able to call down and ask for the temperature the next morning. As you might have expected, she was told that "No, MSC cruises cannot provide the temperature in Fahrenheit" the very next morning. At this point, I went to the guest relations desk to find the name of the concierge so that I could follow-up. At guest relations, I was greeted with a scowl and told immediately to go back to my room and look at the TV if I needed to find the concierge's name, they wouldn't give it to me. I then explained my problem with Fahrenheit and my mother's birthday to the man, and he slammed a piece of paper on the desk with the temperature in Celsius onto the counter and said "See: 25 degrees. That's all I can tell you." When I asked to write his name down, he scribbled it illegibly on a piece of paper (luckily my wife wrote it down separately). We left and took a table in the atrium to cool-off and he continued to stare at us. We finally had to leave. The next morning, I was able to get the concierge's name (not from my TV, but from another person at guest relations). Relaying this story, she apologized again and said she'd remove some charges from mine and my mother's bill. This did not happen. The only positive was that on the last day, when my mother called down to ask for the temperature in Fahrenheit (she's a persistent woman), she said people tried to get it, but still could not figure it out. At least they tried! But in all, a truly disheartening experience for an American abroad. Bars: Bar service was good. We were generally served promptly and the drinks were relatively reasonable in their prices. Everything is very standard, so don't expect anything too fancy, but when you can get bottles of wine for under 20 Euros on a cruise ship, you can't complain! Because the prices were low, we opted to skip the drink package, and that ended up being the right choice based on our total spend, and we never felt like we didn't drink enough. In fact, may wines by the glass were not available in the drink package. It's not by price, it's by marked item in the menu. We would likely have been disappointed if we pre-booked the package. Bar bands were relatively disappointing. There was no one we really enjoyed sitting around and listening to, so we opted for the quieter wine bar. Entertainment/Shows: The stage productions were mostly disappointing. Because MSC does everything (and I mean everything) in 5 languages (English, German, Italian, French and Spanish), they rarely have any productions with words in them, and the intro to the show takes about 5 minutes. Standard cruise fare though. The magician was the best show we saw. The others were 30 minutes with about 5 minutes of truly interesting entertainment. Each evening there was also entertainment in the aft bar starting at 11:30 PM. These shows were decent and got people engaged. We usually went up for these shows, and they were very crowded. We didn't view much of the poolside entertainment because the weather was not great for it, but the "Beer Party" an Octoberfest-like event was entertaining. Other Notes: Our best experiences were with the Photography team. While the pictures were cheesy, they took lots for us. If you book an MSC Cruise, get the "Internet Package" of photos before you go (not available on board). It offers 100 printed pictures for $100. It was a great deal, and kept us entertained every night. It especially felt good when we heard people spending $60 on 3 pictures. We didn't use any shore excursions, but they were relatively reasonably priced. We did use the boat-sponsored transfer in Marseille with no problems. Boarding the boat at each stop was a pain, because if you come back close to departure, they shut down all of the entrances except for one, and employees use it as well. They have no problem with jumping the line of paying customers, and only once did I see security stop them from doing so. Summary: My expectation is that most Americans who have cruised before will not find this cruise suitable. We heard the same from other English speaking cruisers. An Irish woman on her first cruise that we were talking to said people keep telling her, "Don't give up on cruising, most of them aren't like this." While MSC offers interesting ports at a lower cost point (although per night not much lower than other carriers in the Mediterranean), their service level is significantly lower than anything we have been on. For sailings in the Mediterranean on mid-range cruise lines, I'd recommend American stick with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. Read Less

we chose this cruise on recommendation from our travel agent, the embarkation process was very smooth & quick, most of the staff onboard were friendly, helpful, courteous, we chose suite, it was spacious, with panoramic view, & small walk-in wardrobe, the disappointing thing was there were no amenities, except soap & shampoo from dispenser, we expected the suite to have more amenities, the buffet had an array of choices, we were spoilt for choices, & also the restaurant had different menu every day, so it was good as we could only go to one restaurant to eat, or buffet, good entertainment whole day through, & in the evenings too, didn't; take any shore excursions with them, as they all were starting quite early, & we wanted to take it easy, heading off at around 11, the bus service from port to city were too expensive, as it was drop & pick, they could have kept it more reasonable, check for other services, or public transport, much cheaper & equally good, disembarkation was not very good for us, as they did not give us tags for our luggage, & by the time we asked them, they said it was late to get luggage service, didm;t give us reason as to why the tags were not delivered in our room. so in the morning one kind cleaner helped us with our luggage to the exit point, so that ruined our overall experience. As it was their fault for not giving us tags, they should have assisted us with our luggage. But overall it was a good experience. Lots of activities to keep one occupied. Lots of quiet seating areas too to relax. Read Less

We sailed on the Splendida last September and loved everything which is why we booked again. Everything was pretty much the same except for the food. On our last cruise there were 7 courses each night and generous portions as well as delicious choices. This time it was only 3 courses and they were small. There was one gala night but still only 3 courses so not sure what made it a gala night. We requested the same cabin that we had on our last cruise and were lucky that it was available. The entertainment was not as good as last year either.Im not sure if there had been a change in the entertainment team but maybe its fairer to say that it wasn't to our taste. The ship is beautiful and the staff work very hard but for me the food is important and I may not book again if it doesn't improve. Seven courses meals are still being advertised on TV cruise programmes too. One of the best innovations introduced since our last cruise was the buzzer on the buffet tables to notify the bar staff that you required a drink. Last year it was a case of trying to catch the waiters eye. Read Less

An honest review I wills start with the PROS I) Service in the bar and restaurants excellent. 2) The guy attending to our rooms was excellent 3) Service in the breakfast and dinner restaurants excellent 4) All transactions on board very smooth. 5) Drinks of good quality 6) food in restaurant ok breakfast really good dinner ok not a great deal of choice buffet food not much different to average all inclusive. CONS 1) BE WARNED you will be kicked off the ship on your last day at 9am and bussed off to your airport, it happened to our party and our flight wasnt until 19.45 THEY REALLY DO NOT CARE. 2) Queed to get on board in Malta for over an hour made worse by groups of people stating that they where a party and nust board together (as many as 20 at a time and no children) when our group objected we had the comment " your only English" when we finally boarded the ship I was fuming and to see 4 staff members laughing and joking with their hands in their pockets I was even more annoyed. One man putting EVERY single item on a scanner another 2 members of staff confiscating the bottles they where taking on board. 3) Waited hours to board and you couldnt buy any food they did however supply juice after a long journey it was poor. 4) Paid nearly 20 Euros each for a trip to Marseilles and a short walk away we noticed a FREE shuttle bus service THAT IS A DISGUSTING WAY TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS.
