I have sailed princess crown x 2, ruby, then the emerald. This was an 8 day cruise on the Eastern Caribbean for New Years! I would have thought that champagne for the new years toast would have been complimentary-- but that was not the case. Even in sea days, the decks lacked lounge chairs set up despite having a full ship. People were fighting over the chairs that were available. The entertainment was terrible. A new show of magic combined with musical was a terrible joke. Not sure where this idea came from but it was awful with MANY people leaving the theater part way through. There were few activities on the princess patter to attend day and night. The lack of activities offered left my adult children bored! We did not get a single towel animal and have always had this to look forward to when returning to our room. On the upside, the kids club (pelican) was excellent. The food was excellent as in all princess cruises. Very disappointed in the Emerald; definitely not a gem! Read Less

We cruised before with Royal Caribean twice, Celebrity and Holland America,it was our first and last with Princess. There is so many bad things about this cruise, but I will make a list: Good things: -A lot of staff at the buffet area and at the pool, we were never without help -The enviorement it is very casual, wich we liked -Restaurants are open all the time from 6:00a.m to midnight -Nice selection of movies all over the day and night, at night they serve a delicious popcorn -Some good music -Very friendly staff Bad things: -The ship is big but, the public areas are very small wich makes all places pack all the time -The bathrooms inside the cabins are ridiculous small, wich makes a shower very unconfortable (I'm 5'4" and 120 lbs...)my husband is 5'9" and 180 lbs....he use to go to the spa to shower... -The WC at the pool area were always very dirty -There are 5 restaurants for lunch, breakfast and dinner, but they look exactly the same, wich makes you feel you are all the time in the same place... -The food was horrible, but realy bad,did not taste too bad but had too much fat,a lot of grease, and the quality is horrible, not fresh, you could tell that was made many hours before or even a day before...and the presentation was worse...I felt sick on the first day of the cruise after lunch and could not eat for almost 3days... -Dinner time was a nighmare, terrible waiters, rude guys with only few good ones wich save 3 nights(We asked to repeat one of them), we felt we were at Mac Donald's,very bright lights, very loud waiters, you could see them throwing the rest of the food from other tables alway, they do it in front of you, wich was very disgusting,I could not believe what I saw...never saw it in a cruise. -We did not relax,I was crazy to go back home Read Less

Having been on a couple cruises before, with Carnival, we expected a lot more from Princess than what was delivered. Signed up for the basket of fruit in our room everyday, received exactly 2 baskets for the 8 days aboard. Water ran to the hot side only in our cabin. Cabin was small! Food on the buffet was on par with Golden Corral Country Buffet. The fruit selection included overripe pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, pears, apples and occasionally grapes. No tropical fruits! Dining seating was slow, service usually slower with a fine looking menu but something lacking in delivery and flavor most times. Service was way sub-standard with the notable exception of our room steward. We even watched staff walk over trash and not pick it up, even over hearing a few say "not my section". The huge screen, outdoor movies were fun except for all the paper trash swirling constantly across deck, landing on you and just generally distracting from the experience. With the lack of service, dirtier than expected decks, the ants in the public bathroom, we made the best of it and enjoyed ourselves and the many, many cruisers we met! Read Less

I just returned from my 5 night cruise on the Emerald Princess. My wife and I have been on almost every cruise line with destinations all over the world and were very disappointed with Princess and their inexcusable decision to allow this ship to sail with all the problems that they had on board. This was not our first cruise with Princess so we decided to book this vacation because of their itinerary of two days at sea and their private island with a stop at the Grand Turk. All we wanted to do is rest and enjoy the ship and all it's services. I will start with what we liked about the ship. The crew was very friendly and accommodating. The entertainment was excellent. There was an amazing amount of activities all over the ship and the staff was amazing. Now for the downside. The food was just average including the Crown Grill with it's up charge of $25 per person. If you are used to eating out at fine steak or seafood restaurants please do not expect the same service or food quality. Room service was a joke. They told me 20 minutes to deliver two cokes and a bottle of water. After an hour we just cancelled the order and went to the bar. Next, they did not staff their passenger services desk with enough people. They must have had 8 computer terminals with only 3 people at one time. I did not even bother to call on the phone anymore because when I went there in person, the phones were ringing off the hook with those passengers who kept trying to call. Forget the shore excursion desk because they could not even answer basic questions about the Grand Turk port and just referred me to a brochure. Believe it or not this was the minor complaints that we had. Our cabin, in addition to probably 100 other cabins did not have working showers, sink faucets with cold water, adequate air conditioning ( it was warm in our balcony cabin on the Aloha Deck ). The captain actually apologized over the loud speaker on the first day and told us it would all be fixed. Not so. Some cabins actually had their waste water from their toilet over flow. We were lucky, our toilet actually worked. They told us to take our showers in their Spa which was ridiculous because of the lines, zero privacy and no additional towels. We just decided to take cold showers in our cabin and was happy that we did not have only scalding hot water like some of the other guests. There was actually more problems but that should give you an idea of our nightmare cruise. What really bothers me is the deception of the cruise line because I spoke to several guests who were on the same ship before dry dock and had the Same problems. The ship should of never been allowed to sail in that condition. We love to cruise, approximately 2 times a year and cannot see us ever taking another Princess Cruise again with so many other choices out there. I plan on contacting Jan Swartz the president of Princess Cruise Lines so she can personally be in the loop on how her employees allowed this ship to sail. I like other passengers expect monetary compensation for our inexcusable sailing conditions. I understand that you " Get What You Pay For " but on this cruise we did not. Read Less

I have been sailing with Princess since the 90s and I must say they are slipping down the slope quickly. As others pointed out, the Emerald Princess should not have left dry dock. I don't believe the ship was ready and I too question the logistics and scheduling decisions made by those in charge of it. One crew member told me they went over budget by $5 million and spent a total of $19 million. They had a video about what they did in dry dock. I think they created it because you couldn't tell anything was done other than new carpet smell. There were other odd smells in public rooms as well which they did not do anything about until the day we disembarked. We left Port Everglades almost 2 hours late as they were still loading items needed. Not to mention the numerous functioning issues that occurred throughout the trip. Service was good in some places and horrible in others. We gave up on eating in the Main Dining room as our service was the worst I've experienced on any cruise. For some reason, we didn't have an actual Waiter but 2 Assistants only. Neither were ready to be a full waiter. One evening, they even forgot to take the order of one person at our table of four. It took sometime for him to come back and take the order. Another night the coffee came out and was not right, color was ok, had no taste and turned a strange color when cream was added. Apparently, this was my fault or at least that is how I was made to feel given the terrible looks I was given by the one assistant. On top of it, they had a Matre'd there making them nervous the whole time and honestly, he wasn't much better in guest experience. We had other servers who were nice and friendly in Café Caribe and Horizon. Horizon Buffet food was disappointing overall. I think I was spoiled by the Royal Princess buffet as it had so many selections with high quality food. The Emerald did not. Even the croissants that I so enjoy were not fresh or good tasting. We had mini-suite E731. Great room location with a huge balcony. Highly recommend it. We unfortunately had the water, toilet and AC issues for 4 out of 5 days. Oh well. We made the best of it! Room Steward was nice but he too seemed to very new as most of the crew on this ship and we had to frequently ask for things instead of them just happening. Grand Turk - Highly recommend the Catamaran, Snorkel and Beach! Other than that, it was a waste of time. Not much to see or shop. Carnival has some work to do there. A local told us that Caicos is the side to see. Princess Cays - Had a good time. Windy but sunny. Rented a Sanctuary Bungalow and paid for lunch. Most of the lunch was ok but the Cold Grilled Lobster with cocktail sauce was more than worth it!! So delicious!!! Ate at the Crown Grille a couple times. Was good and as expected. Did not go up to Share. $39 is just too much and my parents who were on the trip also loved Sabatini's so they didn't want to have anything to do with Share. Entertainment was pretty good. Enjoyed the Love Boat Disco Deck party and recommend going. Photographers were good and not too pushy. We enjoyed Cindy as she was fun. Ultimate Balcony Dinner - A must do if you have a balcony. Excellent food and service. Overall, disappointing but we made the best of it and had a good time. Unfortunately, probably my last on Princess for awhile. Do wonder if they will be giving any compensation for this trip. Have not heard anything yet and plan to contact them about it just like the hundreds of others likely have already. Read Less

The Emerald Princess did not meet my expectations but then again I had sailed on her before in 2008 on a ten (10) day cruise and was comparing it to that. There were many things that I did not love this time around although some of it was good and what you expect from Princess. That being said, we enjoyed our cabins as we had a wonderful cabin steward who kept the place spotless; also we were only one deck below the Lido deck (Riviera) which was convenient. The Pizza on this ship like all Princess ships was the best at sea and the Trident Grill was also very good. Food in the main dining rooms was largely terrible. It did not take us very long to figure out the Buffet food on this ship was much better than what you got in the main dining rooms so we mostly dined there instead, even on Thanksgiving. The only thing we enjoyed in the main dining room was High Tea which I had never experienced before but will not miss again; it was quite nice. On my last cruise on this ship the food quality and the types of items served were far superior but I guess the backslide is the Cruise Industry in general. Entertainment was poor. There was one "production show" and the rest was pretty lame. We went to the Crew Show which was entertaining but then the next day at the Cooking Show they trotted out the same crew memeber to sing the same song-boy the saved a lot on entertainment for this cruise. Most of the time there was nothing to do. There is a big focus on the Effy store on the ship and there are frequent raffles. It was really interesting to watch people pile in there for these raffles where one girl stood there in front of the box filling out entry after entry; of course she one two (2) of them as you do when you have entered 100 times. Unbelieveable how they hawk that jewelry. There were no good movies under the stars and the one night they had one of interest it rained; forget about getting anything good on TV in the cabin. We do like that the Emerald Princess offers complimentary steam and sauna in the men's and ladies locker rooms; this is getting to be a thing of the past with all the new ships having Thermal Suites that must be purchased. We also as always enjoyed the International Cafe. Bar Service was very slow and largely inattentive. Elevators always seemed to have some out of order which meant long waits. Like any cruise there as good and bad. The main complaints were the food quality in the main dining rooms and the lack of good entertainment although this definitely was not the worst cruise I have been on. Great embarcation and unorganized debarkation; why do people insist on ignoring requests to sit down and take their luggage out of the isle in the waiting areas? Sheesh! My last complaint is the crappy outlet sale that Princess has on the last sail date on every voyage. I have never seen so much overpriced crap in my life. It always amazes me how people line up to buy this junk. Read Less

This was our sixth Princess Cruise and the second time aboard Emerald Princess ( 2009 ) Embarkcation was a breeze mainly due to our Platignum membership. However, when we arrived at our cabin (Superior Balcony on Caribe Deck midships) we were disappointed with its size compared to other cruises taken recently with Cunard, Celebrity & P & O. No sofa bed for daytime use. It was a celebration of our recent Ruby Wedding and to say the least, we "survivied" this 8 day cruise. Our cabin steward was excellent and tried to make us as comfortable as possible. 1 No hot water for the first 4 days from shower or basin - we understand that at least 40+ cabins were affected on Caribe deck. 2 Air Con not operating properly - cabin too hot and needed 4 visits from maintenance staff. 3 Fridge in cabin not working. The food in the DA Vinci dining room was average but could not complain concerning the service provided by our waiters or Restaurant Manager. Considering that the ship had recently been in dry dock for a minor refit, it felt "tired" and many problems were still being sorted. Enterainment onboard was good and no complaints in this area. We have always regarded Princess as an upmarket product but after this cruise, I don't think we shall be returning in the near future. Read Less

Having sailed with Princess before this cruise was disappointing. First steward I was assigned to needed to pay more attention on how he cleaned the cabin. 2nd steward assigned to my section for the last 3 days of the cruise was decent. The food and entertainment repeated itself on the 2nd half of the cruise which was disappointing and left certain evenings with not much to do since the entertainer Domino and Cory Simon was less than desired to be heard. The food at lunch in the horizon court was hit or miss and nothing to rave about breakfast was lousy. The fixed dinning at Boticelli was good but again menu repeated the 2nd half of the voyage. Wait staff service at the Horizon was lousy and some of them understood very little english and you needed to repeat yourself. The Crown Grill steaks was not very good, my mom's filet Mignon was burned top and bottom and the side dishes were lousy. We hardly ate much, when we complained to the waiter he said that was the way it was. Sabitini's was good service and the food was good. The only little fun was the afternoon trivia with the cruise director's staff. If you were not a regular at Crooner's or they knew you did not drink much they paid little attention to you. Int'l cafe was good but how wrong can you go with coffee and dessert. Trident Grill hamburger and Knockwurst was good and the pizza was also good. The ship is going into dry dock and it needs a fixing and ripping down Sabitini's to put in the restaurant Share by Curtis Stone I don't how well that is going to go over not something I would pay for Read Less

The ship was packed with the senior set - many had stayed on the ship from the previous voyage. Medical emergencies every day, ambulances at the dock, and even a helo evac at sea. If your idea of a great day at sea is a senior center with everything overcrowded - this is the cruise for you. We went to "fine dining" for lunch the day at sea. Arriving when it opened we were faced with a long line. When we got to the front we were shunted off - rudely - to the side because we did not want to share a table. After 20 minutes of standing and waiting - I asked the Maitre'd if anyone would ever give us a status. I was rudely told that he had no idea when a table would be available - and if I didn't like that - I could share elsewhere. I opted to eat elsewhere - lines but few tables in the buffet or on deck. Consummate host...lol. If you wanted to see a show - you had to be there 30 -45 minutes before the start to get a seat. The enrichment / crafts were basically to dump some crayons and stickers in a pile and say have at it. The trivia and quizzes was a waste of time - they used the same questions the week before and many knew the answers in advance. Too hard to change the questions I suppose. Many seniors never got off the ship; those that did seemed to make it a point to show up at the tours at least 15 minutes after the time on the ticket - making everyone else wait. I won't be taking anymore princess cruises out of Florida. Read Less

This was our first ever holiday on a cruise ship, we choose Princess because it had the timing and visits we wanted. We choose a balcony room and paid full fare. I will keep this simple: A Cruise to us is nice food and entertainment 1: We were refused entry to the intermediate restaurants on formal nights (2) even though we dressed in the best we brought with us (Black suit and tie required) So ended up in the Buffet which was inconsistent in quality. (One night they counted 5 cherries per plate no lie) 2. The "Love Boat" theme is way past old - continues screening on one channel of captain stubbing and crew was just lame. 3. The timing of activities on the boat overlapped so after watching one show going to another event meant late arrival no seats or show ending 4. The cost of the on board photos is extreme way beyond a reasonable cost 5. On departure we were left at Rome without water in the sun and a 4 hour wait because of offloading time allocation. Good or better: 1. Staff are excellent they work there "guts" out for a pittance and 9 months servitude on contract 2: The at cost restaurants ($25) are what we should have had all along in quality The ship looks a little tired We will not be spending our money on cruising again based on this experience Read Less

We have cruised many times before and therefore were quite surprised by the difference between this cruise and the others we have been on. This cruise did nothing well from the captains drinks a shambolic tacky affair, to the food which had the oddest combinations of flavours which mostly did not work. They could not even do simple dishes like pasta well which is quite amazing. The desserts and plain meats were the only highlights and both of these were good. The buffets had very odd combinations none of which went together and anyone liking any type of asian food would have been very disappointed by the flavours. Room service was prompt but could not get the orders right and never brought coffee that was hot, we gave up ordering it as it was virtually cold. Many accounting issues occurred being charged for wines when having a drinks package, and also not receiving the on board credit which was clearly on the booking from, but the customer service could not have been less helpful or interested in sorting these issues out. The desk was constantly clogged with unhappy people. Overall this cruise lacked any special feel. The entertainment was ok, the timing of trivia etc not well thought out meaning 8.00 diners virtually never able to do some of these things, but nothing was really good or memorable, anyway. The boat always docked at the furthest dock, and the company never ever put on any free transfers to town, even on one occasion charging 20 american dollars per person for a couple of kilometers in a local boat to town. The cruise was very poor value for the quality of food, staff, rooms and general experience. Many better cruise lines are out there offering, cheaper far superior experiences. Read Less

This was my 7th cruise with Princess, my 2nd on the Emerald. Sailed on it 2 years ago, and there is a noticeable decline in many areas. Entertainment is the biggest change - the old Vista lounge (now Club Fusion) used to offer a second evening entertainment venue. It sits empty 95% of the time now, its used for the Captain's Circle events. I would expect they'll convert it into another pay restaurant or something to take your money when refitted. The few dance shows at the Princess Theater are the same ones I saw 2 years ago, You'll only see the dancers and shows a few times. The entertainment has really gone downhill, they hire lousy comedians and unknown singers now. Not sure if this is a trend on all Princess ships, but its definitely disappointing. There was one group, the Mosaic Trio that I enjoyed. The crew put on trivia shows and the like to entertain you, rather than hire entertainers. Food - every breakfast in the Horizon court is the same and disappointing. Service is hit and miss there. Coffee is terrible. They even have plastic fruit on display there now! Fruit selection is not as good as before. A lot of dinner items they serve in the Horizon court are things people would never want and just sit there untouched. Dining Room main courses were generally good, but the waiters there are a far cry from what they used to have. Most can hardly speak English, ours always abruptly shoved our menus into our faces when we greeted fellow diners. They used to remember your preferences & name. They put no effort into that now. Don't expect a good cup of coffee in the dining room, its now the same crap they serve in the buffet. You have to buy a $30 (+15%) coffee card now to get a decent cup of coffee. ANY kind of coffee or tea in the International Cafe must be had with this card. Picking your pockets. A lot of little things that made the dining room feel like a classy restaurant have disappeared - the service, poor coffee, cheap quality ice cream, even the baked Alaska is terrible. Touted pasta dishes were dried out and lacked flavor. Ship - expect to find elevator buttons that don't work. Exterior windows used to be washed regularly - they never were for the entire cruise - salt stained windows from the dining rooms/buffet detract from the experience. Ship shudders like an unbalanced washing machine when docking, wakes you up at night. Embarking and disembarking were fine. Internet - the worst I've ever seen on any ship. Passengers were livid about the snail speed and it locking up all the time, tech support unavailable (I asked purser's desk) as passengers struggled to print boarding passes. As a platinum member I got 250 free minutes that were pretty well useless to me as my ipad just kept freezing. Technology on the ship not able to keep up with the bandwidth demand of increasingly tech dependent passengers. No weather information on the ship channel. Shore Excursions- Prices have gone from ridiculous to obscene. You can go ashore and hire a taxi and literally save over $200 on some excursions (for two adults) compared to ship excursion costs. No wonder they never sell out anymore. Ports were generally good - esp Malta, Genoa, and Kushadasi. To summarize, Princess has been going downhill for some time and it was the first time my wife was really disappointed with them. She has been sailing with them since 1980 and used to love Princess. Carnival Corp is not maintaining the quality level of the Princess line where it should be. If costs are rising they should consider raising the cruise fare, instead of cutting the things people look forward to (esp. food, entertainment) and add new charges. If I want a cheap low quality experience there is Carnival lines. I expected a better experience with Princess and they missed the mark. I wonder if they are ruining Cunard....... Read Less

From the moment we stepped onboard Emerald in Istanbul there was a complete lack of elegance and sophistication we had found on numerous cruises before aboard the Princess line. The ship was tired, the crew burned out and there was a complete lack of concern. The bedding looked like they had cleaned the floor with it and the bathroom towels were ragged and tattered. We have cruised Princess several times before although it had been three years ago this time and the difference was shocking. For those of us who enjoy the late seating dining this unbeknownst to us eliminated the evening shows. Show times were 6 and 7:30 instead of the traditional 10 PM show after a nice dinner. The entertainment was nonexistent. The Princess Employee Talent Show are you kidding me you could hear the dogs barking 60 miles away in Istanbul. The first full day was a day at sea and we tried to go up to one of the pools but there were no towels left so we got to sit on the dirty deck chairs and watch the unsupervised children strangling one another as the played some version of "King of the Mountain". Jumping, diving, screaming and carrying on it was a complete free for all. The toilet in our stateroom stopped working and the list continued. We were in shock as I began to think that somehow I wound up on a Carnival ship. I wrote a letter and emailed it to Princess corporate. About 48 hours later I received a telephone call from the Customer Services Director stating that he had heard from the home office and want a meeting with me. With nothing to lose and hopefully something to gain I agreed. We discussed the aforementioned issues along with horrible food both overlooked and undercooked, the free for all buffet on the Horizon Deck and the fact that you had to just about beg to get a glass of lemonade from the staff. There were people complaining every time we turned around. These were legitimate complaints and for the many that tried to speak with someone on staff they told how they were ignored and dismissed. At the end of my meeting the Customer Services Director requested that I meet with him again the second week which I agreed to do and I never heard another word from him. We decided to purchase a photo taken on one of the Formal Nights and as usual we saw the $19.95 sign but when I went to pay for the picture I was charged $24.95 and when I asked why the increased price the response I got was that it was a portrait. Seriously? How about the dry cleaning that came back in a ball of wrinkles? The ship is due to go to the yard in October which is probably about 6 months later than it should have. They requested that we complete a post cruise survey and as you can probably imagine I was more than happy to respond albeit not what they wanted to hear. I even attached a letter elaborating on our experiences leaving the door open for some type of resolution but all I got was a telephone call from someone in California identifying himself as the people in charge of dissatisfied passengers thanking me for my input. Are you kidding me over $10,000.00 spent and I get a "have a nice day." In a nutshell the cruise was a disaster and Princess completely dropped the ball this time. I cannot begin to tell of the frustration I feel with this cruise and this company. If your considering a Princess Cruise don't until they get straightened out if they get straightened out. Simply put we got ripped off! I will never ever do another Hop On Hop Off "Medley" cruise again and I'm very doubtful we will set foot on another Princess Cruise due to their give a heck attitude. Never realized a cruise line would sail such a ship in need of an upgrade. Having sailed a few times, my expectation was that all cruise lines maintained their ships so that they never looked worned nor tired! Not to mention the difficulty in making ones way around the ship What saved this cruise from total disaster was the destinations. They were awesome and the tours from the cruise line was excellent. The staff were friendly but there was so much up-selling of drinks, coffee and photos. I felt like I was pressured at every turn. The food the first week was so poor that I lost weight. Like a light switch being turned on, the food the second week was exceptional. There should not be such a variance. Out balcony was in need of a paint job. The cruise director was rarely seen and didn't add much to the on board activities. The entertainment, compared to other ships, was weak. Overall, disappointing especially when you are on the ship for 14 days. I can add that the embarkation and disembarkation went extremely well. The staggered times are a great tool. Read Less

I have travelled with Princess for 30 years often defending and promoting this company as times & cruise expectations have evolved & changed. I booked a 2 week cruise from Istanbul to Barcelona. I received 2 one week cruises with food, entertainment, in-room entertainment and public announcements duplicated from one week to the next. Different ports of call but the exact same onboard mediocracy. Oh, and noro-virus (the ship went to 'RED' status). The ship is in rough condition with mold and mildew growing around the whirlpools, elevators not functioning, decor pealing, burned out lights and an "EFFY Store." As an Elite passenger, we were greeted with an obviously dirty toilet with skid marks. As the sun entered the room, we could also see the antics of a previous passenger splattered on the artwork hanging on the wall. The table on the balcony did receive a cleaning 12 days into the cruise and the room was vacuumed once. We did of course receive our invitation on week one for the Captain's Party. No handshaking as the virus was throughout the ship. We also received a second invitation to a Captain's Party (same Captain's name on the invite) the following Thursday. However, we did not attend because the Captain disembarked for a 2 month vacation and a new Captain took the helm that very day. We are still curious why we received the second invite from a Captain and a system that must have known he was leaving. The system is broken. I felt we were simply a credit card number. Minimum effort by a system needing a radical examination & overhaul. I compliment the staff (not the head-office, not the accountants, not the system analysts & definitely not the senior management) in trying to provide a great cruise experience to each and every passenger but are handicapped by a dysfunctional, antiquated corporate culture. After 30 years, the question arises if I will travel on the Love Boat again (....by the way, the episodes were repeats & repeated too!)? Read Less

I have to tell you, I'm ready to fly home at the next port. I will be more than happy to follow up with a more positive review at the end of the cruise, but day one leaves a lasting impression. On the positive side..the only positive side...check in was a breeze and the people were very friendly. It went downhill from there. I paid double for my own private room and asked to be put in the quietest part of the ship. Screaming kids running up and down the hall. Oh well. I went down to one of the bars and was tried to be sold on a number of different packages that I didn't want. I was told I could not even get free coffee in the morning. I ordered a robe in the room..it wasn't there. I called room service and asked for a tray of canapes "We're sorry sir, but we need 6 to 8 hours notice to get those". I asked for a bottle of wine. "I'm sorry sir but we have to wait until we are out of the port of Houston before we can deliver that to your room". They nickel and dime you to death. I prepaid the gratuities, but have been told that only applies to to he wait staff in the restaurant and my room steward. Deceptive. Right now there is a pianist playing.. i could be in a floating Nordstroms. But I guess I have just realized that cruises are not for me. If I wanted to have to bypass crammed elevator after crammed elevator just to go up and down the stairs, I could just go to and office building downtown. The whole ship has this incredible air of cheapness about it. And, much like the airlines, the staff seems completely robotic. Stains on the carpet in my room, a laughable selection of TV channels (every other one being an ad for Princess). I was told i could bring plates of food up to my room from one of the places downstairs, but then no one told me what to do with them once I was finished. There were no to go boxes or bags. So here I am in the jammed elevator with china, trying to balance it. In addition, our lifevest demonstration was HIGHLY inadequate. We were hoarded into a theatre like we were going to see a show. Then, as if on a giant airplane, the attendants demonstrated how to use to vest. We were never told specifically where our lifeboats were. All in all, not a happy camper, in the least. Again, I will be the first to change this review at the end of the journey if things change. Read Less

Let me start by saying we are not picky and the type to gripe about little things. That being said I was very disappointed in our cruise on the Emerald Princess. We did the same cruise last year on the Caribbean Princess and was very happy with that cruise. We chose Princess again because of the food, I feel Princess has a lot better food than Carnival so we went with Princess. The food did not disappoint, it was very good and the service in the dining room was great!!! The problem we had was this boat has very few activities on sea days, this was a spring break cruise so the average age was much younger than what is usually on this ship. I still have no idea who the cruise director was, never heard or saw him/her. There are things like bridge and knitting classes, line dancing classes things you would see in a senior citizen home. Almost every show was an attempt to sell something. The ship is a nice ship almost the same as the Caribbean Princess but the entertainment was lacking to put it nicely. If you are 75 years old you will love it as it will be just like a nursing home if you are young and have kids re think this cruise!!!!! Since most gratuities are automatic the bar staff could really care less it took forever to get a drink or refill and they acted as if it was a hassle to serve a drink. We loved Princess last year but this cruise makes me look at that line very different now. Read Less

My father and I went on the Emerald Princess (dubbed the money pit later by me). Our destinations were Rotan, Belize city and Cozumel. The cruse was great except the elaborate prices for anything other than iced tea or water. Also the gratuity that is charged for ordering a drink at the bar. And I have never seen a casino that charged for drinks to players and then charged gratuity to boot (until now that is). The food was average on the buffet and dinner was a 7 out of 10 I would say so not to bad there. The shows were the best part of anything aboard except they let kids sit anywhere and all of the screaming kids accompanied by bad parenting skills were distracting to everyone including the performers. Drink prices if you are not clever enough or are to honest to pour out a bottle of mouth wash and smuggle food coloring /vodka in the mouthwash bottle are $9.50 + $2.95 gratuity for a very small glass - screw driver, Scotch and water so on Wine was anywhere from $7 to $22 a glass depending so no big deal there. I think that's about normal. Beer was $6 per or 5 for $25 about what I pay at a pro game NBD there either. Mixed drinks like the "Isaak" were $15 along with Margareta's and any other frozen mixed drink that required as far as I can tell 2 brain cells to make. I cant figure out why the price difference because the content was the same. $15 for a Margareta and $15 for a Blue Margareta or a long island iced tea which has several shots I think. And last but not least is the shore excursions... Holy Cow!!!!! Looked but not booked... went ashore and got them at least half price from locals as I am used to doing this and I speak the language very well and I tip and tip very well at least 20% according to effort of my provider not because someone makes me do it. swimming with the dolphins was $169 per aboard the ship for 1/2 hour. booked the trip with a local including driver round trip and lunch 2 hour tour was $99 .... for 2 (WAMO). Didn't get to Belize city due to bad seas. ( not the captains fault) But we trolled along to Mexico at 4 knots to waste the day instead of cruising on and spending more time in Cozumel. No itinerary refund BTW just an "We are sorry but thanks for your port and docking money anyway". Unless you just love being at sea and watching daytime shows that are for kids or have kids in them like all of the bars... (who lets their kids in bars with a bunch of old drunks?) Or fantastic night time entertainment (really the best part of the whole ship trip) with again a bunch of screaming brats running wild. (they even let them run wild on formal night in the dining room). Some peoples .. and their children... I am back to flying folks! I'll spend my time and money there not on the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope this helps someone who is thinking about but has never been on a cruse.   Read Less

I have cruised 3 times with Carnival and enjoyed each one. Was given a chance to try Princess and thought it would be a step up. The ship was okay. Our cabin was a balcony and we enjoyed coffee there in the morning. Our bathroom had a urine smell and it took some cleaning and shower curtain change to help improve the smell. Cabin steward was not as happy or helpful as we have experienced on Carnival. There was a sewage smell in some of the common areas. That was unpleasant to say the least. Food in the dining room was ok. Liked Carnivals selection better. Our servers in the dining room were great. The buffet was awful. The selection was small and the food that was supposed to be hot was cold by the time we walked to out table. Breakfast was so bad we opted to eat cold cereal and coffee on our balcony on most mornings. We will cruise again but it wont be with Princess. Read Less

This was an interesting experience for my wife and me... My 4th cruise, her 5th or 6th- and our 3rd Princess trip. To be honest, I'd known ahead of time I wold not be thrilled with the ports, but we were just making an attempt to have a break from our everyday lives. The good: Embarkation from Houston was pretty seamless. We had arranged for transfers from the airport to the cruise through Princess and that went well, though there was (as always) a pretty extensive wait to get on the ship. We had flown out the day before and stayed close to Hobby so there was no stress regarding timelines. Once on the ship, our stateroom was ready and very nice- first time for an inside cabin. Our room attendant was great (Supatra, from India) and we had no issues with our accommodations. My wife is sensitive to motion sickness so we were a little apprehensive about being inside- but really quiet overall and a pleasant experience. The ship: Crew was almost without fail polite, courteous, and pleasant. I had very few times when I was not greeted in passing any of the crew. The Emerald Princess was well-kept and clean- maybe the best of the cruises I have experienced. Not so good: Ports. (But I mentioned that previously)- In Roatan, Honduras we opted for a nature walk through an outside agency on western end of the island- it was not the best, but we *did* get off the ship. We weren't able to do anything related to water this trip so our options were limited. The ship did not stop at Belize due to weather; at Cozumel we got off the ship and went briefly to the terminal/shopping area. Really not a fan of these kinds of areas!! Shipboard food: We tried a variety of options, met with differing outcomes. Buffet food (Horizon) was the worst of 3 Princess cruises. Bland, not hot, I don't know. Disappointing. Rolls were outstanding!! Specialty dining (Crown Grill) was also disappointing- waiter was great but food so-so. My wife's filet was good but my steak was overcooked and tough. Sides were not as hot as they could have been. Dessert was good. International Cafe- best overall food experience- and lattes!!! (Get a coffee card...) We had a number of lunches here and service was always good. Entertainment: We didn't see much, but what we experienced was not the best. Piazza steel drums and piano- not good. Piano- not good. Outstanding? Stephen Burke from England- guitar, singer. We followed him pretty much nightly from one venue to another. So- Overall, an OK experience but not one worth repeating. As an aside, I'm not into partying and drinking, and the ports weren't exciting so, in all fairness- this cruise might not have been the best choice. Also, comparing this to my previous cruises (Princess Panama Canal and Alaska and RC Europe) just isn't fair. For some this might have been just what they needed to "Come Back New".   Read Less

Overall cruise was good, all days in port were sunny and warm. All three "at sea" days were cloudy. Last day was day from "you know where"!!!! Ship arrived back in port 4+ hours late (due in port at 7am) because of fog which caused an untold amount of problems, especially missed flights (ours included at 1:55pm). All Princess could say was "thank you for your patience", offering no other assistance to passengers. After all, they had already gotten our money...thank you, bye now!! Nice ship with a friendly and helpful crew. Tried one "happy hour" at the Wheelhouse bar, not worth the hassle unless you are there an hour before......had to wait 30 minutes to get served !! Food..... not impressed with the buffet food !!! We have sailed 7 other times with Princess and have always enjoyed the offerings at the Horizon Court. Let's say, this time the food was not as in the past. We don't do the main dining rooms because we prefer the casual atmosphere of the buffet. Did have a great meal at Sabatini's, portions on the small side, but extremely good !!!! Worth the extra cost. Entertainment was good, not the best, but not the worst either. Have enjoyed many great show in the past. Shore excursions..... didn't take any. "Been here, did that" !! Did look at the offerings...... very expensive !!! Something is changing with Princess, can't quite put my finger on it, but we're going to take a break from them.   Read Less

We always enjoy cruising and nothing terrible happened on our latest voyage on Emerald Princess from Houston Texas. But the bar is set high for ships sailing our blue oceans and Princess fell far short of the competition. I shall dwell on the negative in my notes here, but really to be a warning about items I found distasteful and distracting. There were positives as well which I listed too. I will never sail with Princess again, so this is my one-and-only review. Clearly, many customers like their ships and stay with them. On our ship, a couple was listed in the most traveled on Princess with 198 cruises for 1400+ days at sea! That is impressive - 4 years of sailing! - Maleficent's husband (these opinions are mine and may not fully represent those of my dear wife) CONS: * Be AWARE that any big change to your booking may cancel all or part of your shore excursions, dining reservations, upgrades, and credits! Princess appears to take great pride in stealing from customers by charging for these services and then "forgetting" about them once the passenger arrives! I am serious. We split a party of 4 from one cabin into two and all the bookings vanished for the boys we moved (so it was not obvious to us). Discovering this too late while already leaving port made it impossible to recover without "evidence". Yes, they would do NOTHING for us since we failed to bring WRITTEN PROOF for any pre-paid activity or benefit. Their records of our payments were erased entirely and all I heard was "it is not in our computer", which (as you know) means "I think you are a lying customer". They really do not trust you to be correct; I suppose that many customers must be attempting to scam the company and those White Uniformed "officers" have lost faith in humanity. * When our nephew lost his ship card, we were challenged to prove he had the Beverage Option - even though they gave it to him at departure and all our party could show our tags. They simply do not think the customer is to be believed. DO NOT SAIL WITH THESE THIEVES! * Anytime dining means "NOT being able to eat at ANY TIME" - thus, only certain times are open for reservations. Basically, from 6 pm - 8 pm, you must show up and wait in line, which can be 40+ minutes on some nights. * The $25/person upgrade dining was just okay; not bad, but about what you get for that price on land. * The "free" food was average; the pizza was popular but I did not think it so grand. Orange juice was watered down too much, but pine apple juice was okay. * Service for ice cream (really a frozen ice milk) is NOT self-service. Although this appears to be an upgrade, it just creates a long line to get food (on other lines, it takes 30 seconds to get a cup of custard). * At the buffet, you have to sit down to get any drink (other than water or tea), so add 10 minutes if you wish to take your food to the pool or stateroom. * They have the smallest cups for juice (about 3 oz) unless you ask for a large and convince them you will drink what you order (again, the lack of trust in customers). * The entertainment was a band (aka "orchestra") of 5 with the cruise director singing. He was listed as vocally trained and can sing better than me, but not so good as in Broadway-class shows from the other lines. * The magician was fairly good at slight-of-hand but his "tricks" were taken from his own Magic Store (which he plugged) and could be done by anyone; although he did them well, they were fairly obvious as the 3-rope trick is an old stand-by. Then, he showed his kids' video for 10 minutes to plug their acting careers! He gets "Dad Points" for that, but it was boring. * The daily newsletter (event listing) was NOT available at the customer service desk or at kiosks around the ship (like Carnival, Disney and others do) - so don't lose it or forget it - you get ONE copy per cabin! * My primary gripe was with the Shore Excursion desk; the nameless White Uniform man there was rude and of no "service" at all. I admit that my worst side came to the surface as I challenged him at the end of my first visit that I would resolve the ticketing problem and prove him wrong (Princess cancelled half of my group's tickets) even after he insisted that the "computer is always correct". I called my travel agent (Debbie at Cruises Only is a SAINT) who was helpful and found the record of our purchase. Sadly, she never could convince Princess of that fact and the issue was never resolved. I still have two paid tickets to see Belize that Princess refuses to refund to me - again, be cautious and BRING WRITTEN PROOF OF EVERY PAYMENT TO THESE SCOUNDRELS!! PROS: * The ship is basically clean, but typical in appearance without any special options. * Good wait staff & room staff too! This is nearly universal as these are the hardest workers at sea that you will encounter on any cruise line. These folks were delightful, funny, engaging and also helpful. * Our teens really loved it - first cruise so all was new and they found a good group to join and create friendships. We were concerned about not having enough in their age group, but (although true), it was not a problem. * The cruise director does not use the PA (public address) into the state rooms to announce activities - this was great as even my favorite line (Disney) interrupts my daytime naps too often to tell me about ice carving... * The medical staff was nice & friendly. Our nephew god a wood splinter in his finger from the hot-tub (sigh, some ship maintenance needed there), but they helped him remove it. They waived the $45 fee as well (but, of course, they should have). * The Beef Chili from room service was great! And that service was quick and accurate and the stewards were very kind and helpful - don't forget to tip those folks! * The add-on for drinks was a hit for our teen-age nephews who ordered every possible "virgin" beverage as much as 10 times per day! * The room steward has the key to unlock the connecting doors on the balconies! On all my other cruises, this became a 24-hour request to get that door opened, so this was easier and quicker than normal. However, when they did work on our deck, all the doors were opened for an hour and then everyone of them locked again, so we had to ask twice... * The other passengers were kind and gracious; at every meal, we shared a table and had very pleasant conversations with young and old alike. NOTES: * Be aware that the promenade deck, which provides a full 1/3 mile covered circuit of the ship is NOT on one level. I have never seen this before - you must go up from level 7 to 8 at the bow and back down as you make the loop. If stairs are a problem, then you cannot walk around the ship on that level. * On the 2-for-1 happy hour, be aware that you will get two of what you order, not your friends drink for free! Yes, they told us, but I just did not expect them to double my order rather than halve my bill (stupid me). Good drinks but very slow service when they are busy (35+ minutes per round). * If you drink, bring your bottle of wine per adult - was worth having it in our room. * The port of Houston is plagued by fog in some seasons (read more from others), which may delay departure and/or arrival. Be prepared in your travel planning for this as it seems to be likely. Our captain warned us every night about this possibility, which I suppose is good, but every time he talked on the PA to the entire ship (including staterooms), the news was never good. * Although our 15- & 16-year old boys loved the ship, they did not spend time in the teen lounge after day 2; it was an initial meeting place for the kids to bond in groups who then found the sports decks, gym and food areas to be their haunts as the ship's dedicated areas for them held little appeal. Our cruise out of Houston was delayed about 18 hours. Though they blamed the delay on traffic in the channel, then weather, the fact is that the ship was still being provisioned more than three hours after we were supposed to leave. Our scheduled departure time of 4:00 would have been impossible considering that trucks were still lined up and being offloaded after 7:00. Add to this a pallet of champagne was dropped on the pier as well as one of tomatoes was tipped over, the level of incompetence at Houston was unmatched by any port we have sailed out of. Then there was the pallet of luggage that was dropped into the water. It was recovered, but the people affected weren't told what happened until their soaked bags were delivered to their door. Two people in our group were affected, so I saw very closely how this was handled. Once the proper supervisors were notified, they did take care of cleaning..oh and a bottle of wine for the inconvenience. After all of our delays, we finally left on Monday morning about 10:30. Our first stop in Honduras was cancelled, so Costa Maya in Mexico was added. The docking there was aborted because of the weather. Our next stop was in Belize. Somehow, even with our cancelled port the day before we were late. Most of the water based shore excursions were cancelled because of the weather, but that was to be expected. We were able to book a tour on the pier. Our final stop was in Cozumel. We arrived on time, but for some reason we were kept on board for about 45 minutes while another ship was docked. This resulted in the shore excursions being cut short. While we can't blame the weather issues on Princess or the port, the initial delay was not weather related. If you are scheduled to sail from Houston I urge you to look into changing your reservation. The Port of Houston does not seem to be ready for large passenger ships. Read Less

We went on our 1st cruise on the Princess Caribbean. It was great. Our last cruise was on the Emerald. When we arrived at the terminal it was a nightmare to park and board, We stood in line for over 3 hours just to check in. When we finally got on the ship they immediately had a muenster drill and everyone was starving and very tired. Did not find the crew very informative or friendly. They seemed kind of confused and lost. More than once going to eat at the grill or Pizzeria the staff were very deadpan and unfriendly. The food in both the formal dining rooms and the buffet we sub-par at best. Out average time to eat in the dining rooms took 1 1/.2 hrs or sometimes more. There was not a lot of live entertainment going on. Certain parts of the ship smelled really bad.... like mildew and sewage. We did enjoy our excursions (one which was booked not thru the ship). Not enough smoking areas. When wanting a beverage you really had to hunt someone down and search for an open bar. Then when we arrived back to the terminal it took forever to disembark and get out of the parking lot. Our experience on the Princess Caribbean was like night and day compared to the Emerald. We will definitely sail with Princess again but NOT ON THIS SHIP!!!!!!!! Read Less
