Leaving from San Pedro was great----no flying so easy in and out. Embarkation was a breeze. Staff friendly enough. Cruise director did her very best. Food in dining room and in the buffet not so good. the Emerald really needs a new Chef! Food was blah! Dining room staff---especially the head waiter Edgar Vega was excellent and made up for it. He is a rock star! Entertainment was just OK they could step it up more......especially on this cruise to Mexico. It was good----but not over the top like other cruises. The production shows really need to some into the new century! Very dated. Overall rating....I give it a 7 out of 10. This is a good family cruise with many pools and activities for all to enjoy outside. Outside dining is good with pizza and hamburgers for the kids to enjoy so there are some pluses and of course movies under the stars which is a nice touch. Don't forget, if you are looking for more of a dining experience, the ship does have three specialty restaurants. High end and only $29.00 per person. well worth the experience. Bon Voyage Read Less

We wanted to experience Hawaii without long cramped flights. We knew princess cruises are well done and thought it would be a great alternative. It was! As expected, the service on Princess is outstanding. The crew has a culture of helpful friendliness. Our cabin Steward (Sahu), waiter (Sretten) and assistant waiter (Tek) were all outstanding. Duke, our cruise director, has a wonderful sense of humor and was the most accessible cruise director we've had in a while. On board evening entertainment was first rate (afternoons a bit sparse). Meals and cabin (club class mini-suite) were as good as we have come to expect from Princess. Got a chance to see the 4 major Hawaiian islands. Great exposure to the best of each. The stop in Ensenada checked the box to become an international cruise. We took an independent helicopter ride on the big island that was well worth it. We had enough time after to explore on the hop on hop off bus. Oahu was the mandatory pilgrimage to Pearl Harbor for the fist time in Hawaii. Moving, as it should be. Kauai was a tour to Waimea Canyon and the Fern Grotto. Amazing scenery. Well run excursion. On Maui, we took and Uber to Kaanipali Beach. Beautiful! In Ensenada, we took a shore excursion to a former casino and a former winery. The tour guide spoke broken English and did not get the group together before speaking. Could have been better. Overall, great trip. Read Less

Very sorry to say after many Princess cruises we have seen the quality deteriorate the last couple years. This recent cruise on Emerald was the icing on the cake and will be our last with them. The food in the MDR has become competitive with the buffet which you long time cruisers know is as bad as it gets. As great as the staff was they couldn't hide the poor food quality and tried to shove as many dishes at us until perhaps we liked one.The famous lobster night which almost all cruisers look forward will now become infamous. In this review I have attached a picture of the lobster and I can assure you the pic is authentic. The lobster tail really was that size and grey in color. When we tried to eat it the experience was close to what we can only believe would be chewing on a rubber lobster tail toy for your dog from Petco. In most cases the food was bland and had very little taste even the sauces which typically should add taste to a dish but sadly not on this boat. We actually felt sorry for the servers as they frantically tried to please the diners but terrible food cannot be overcome by service. Princess as part of Carnival has suffered in recent times due to the stock's poor performance. The accountants now are clearly running the show and cost cutting goals were not met in 2018 and I can assure you 2019 will get ugly as the year goes on. The saving grace was the International cafe which has tasty sandwiches, salads, and deserts 7X24. There were a few moments of greatness in the buffet at lunchtime with the food but spending a lot of time roaming the 15th floor for a seat is no picnic. The comedian and ventriloquist in the Explorers lounge were fantastic and a great surprise. The queen bed which is really two beds pushed together was terrible! The mattresses were in such bad shape you had to sleep on the outside or you'd be sucked into the middle canyon area and sleep on the steel frame (I kid you not). The staff is the only thing that has kept us returning to Princess but that can only last so long and enough is enough. Note to Princess: WAKE UP! Your platinum and Elite customers are jumping ship and you can cut costs all you like but scaring customers away is a bad business model hoping to load up the boat with new blue card cruisers who don't know the difference. Other companies have tried this and it doesn't exactly build brand loyalty. Read Less

Previous experience with Princess was good 9 years ago. Not anymore. Cruise Director was terrible. Most of the entertainment was amateur at best. The one excursion we chose did not warrant the association with Princess it was a dogs breakfast of a show. (Germaines Luau on Oahu.) Cabin upkeep was excellent. Crew staff were excellent and pleasant. Theatre seating was a nightmare unless you got there 3/4 hour ahead of time. Specialty restaurants had good staff but the food was nothing to get excited about. Crab Shack's crab was not fresh nor of sufficient quantity. Steak restaurant had good environment but little else. The ships photographers became annoying after awhile and the spa services were most aggressive in pushing their very expensive products. My wife and I foolishly fell for the future cruise offer but we won't be using it now that we've experienced the whole cruise. Prior to this cruise, 9 years ago we had 55 days each of Princess cruises. Things were much better 9 years ago. Read Less

the Princess Cruise line offers a good value for the price. We like cruising in the fact we have taken over 10 cruises. The up side to the princess line that they offer cruise from the LA port which we can drive to no flying. Princess cabins are nice well laid out and the balcony is nice and big.. the staff was very friendly and accommodating. A big factor is that staff is not constantly hawking some service it is much more sedate and relaxing than other lines. They offer entertainment in small venues that is intimate. Embarkation and debarkcation went very smoothly. The down side is the Emerald Princess is in need of refurbishement . Paint, carpet and refinishing of wood surfaces. They also need to install multi selection soft drink machine with multiple choices of drinks. It would increase their profit by allowing the customer to refresh His own drink in a supplied cup. That would free up bartender to serve other passengers. Lastly The bed linens should include a selection of pillows . The pillow supplied are jusTOO soft. You sink into them and perspire a lot. Overall for the senior set this Cruise checks most of the boxes. I would recommend for most seniors. Read Less

To get away from winter. My wish was to have warm weather, freedom from cooking, and other household chores. To have time and areas to relax and read and enjoy the ports and sea days. The weather made that difficult as the ship was usually rocking somewhat..walking was similar to being unbalanced. In ports the excursion in Mazatlan was mediocre and in Cabo changed from original dure to weather with no added or changed activites by operator. It was cold and windy, and made no use of the pools and little of the balcony. However, meeting different people made up for much of the above and sittng at different tables each night in dining room was exactly what I wanted..the people, meals and service. I also was totally happy to be able to sing in the Princess Choir the Saturday before disembarktion. The recreation staff was suberb, always happy and smiling. Our cabin steward was excellent and I felt the wait staff ot be helpful and friendly. I have another cruise coming up on Princess and look forward to bigger and better..and hopefully much nicer weather. Read Less

We live in the Pacific NW and a quick trip down to LA and then to Mexico sounded like the perfect antidote to winter. We really enjoyed our cruise on the Emerald and except for a few small issues had an absolutely perfect time. Th e only issues we had is that the lock on our stateroom ran out of battery power, which took about an hour to fix. The other issue is that our experience in Matzalan wasn't everything it could have been - the "City Highlights tour" that we took we would not recommend as the city highlights seemed to include mostly street vendors who could be somewhat aggressive. We had an amazing time in Puerto Vallarata where our snorkling trip turned into a whale watching expedition as they seemed to be everywhere in the bay. Our special thanks to the crew of Emerald who went out of their way to look after us, make sure we got gluten free food, and in general made us feel like part of their families. We highly recommend this cruise, this ship and this line. Read Less

This was a round trip cruise to Hawaii. Great itinerary. PROS We have done 44 cruises and this was the first time I could understand the captain, he was excellent in his reports and explanations. The whole crew was very friendly and helpful. A great attitude by all of them.Probably the best service we ever had. The public areas are well maintained, traditional, and comfortable. Entertainment par to other cruises. Food typical cruise quality and maybe slightly better than Celebrity. CONS Embarkation in San Pedro was a disaster due to weather. People lined up outside in the pouring rain. Our mini suite balcony was a rusted mess, it was very depressing and we did not use it! Cruise director a shrieking annoyance. Debarkation aimed at getting you out of the cabin, but no off the ship. We were told to meet in the theater at 7:45, sat there for 45 minutes. Read Less

I always wanted to go to Hawaii and figured this would be a good taste. Really enjoyed the trip except for the pouring rain on embarkation and the storm that followed us all the way home. The temps were lower than expected. Temp in Ensenada Mexico was only 52 and was very windy on the ship with temps being only low 60,s most of the time. Most people packed for Caribbean weather and it was low 70's. The crew was friendly and accommodating. They provided a sharps container and an extension cord for CPAPs and distilled water. Our excursions were good. Loved the Pineapple plantation and the Pearl Harbor tour and visiting Volcano National Park. Was not always impressed with the extras they added to the excursion like the orchid tour. Not impressed with the plantation tour with the train ride. Feeding the animals was throwing bread to a bunch of pigs. On board Sharon Faff, the naturalist, had so much interesting information it was overwhelming. We went to assigned dining and enjoyed having the same waiters. The food was excellent. Actually I thought the food and service at the the dining room was as good as the Crown Grill and Share. The only thing they give you is ambiance and a little slower pace. On the sea days they had sea crafts, ukulele lessons, spanish lessons, trivia, bingo, etc. Enough to keep one busy. Read Less

This was our 3rd 15 day Hawaiian cruise on Princess. We bragged about it to friends and they booked on our recommendation (we got nothing from Princess). Embarkation was a unorganized disaster, we did not find the staff to be happy or friendly. The food in the dining room and buffet tasteless, I think they do this to sell the upgrade $29 each meal sites. Loved the island stops, the captain wisely delayed departure once to miss a storm and made up the time, a wise decision. The ships seat cushions and mattresses could use an upgrade. One of our party of 8 is allergic to dairy and reported this prior to the cruise. She was offered Jello at meals, the staff is not educated on food allergies, on Carnival and RCL she had a wide variety of foods that she could eat. Our cabin was great. The phone had the wrong name on it that made our granddaughter think she was calling the wrong number, I reported this several times and it was never corrected. The Enesnada Port to town shuttle was incorrectly priced ($4 instead of $2) and took us way off the main street, different than the stated site. BE AWARE Read Less

This cruise started out badly. We had to stand outside in the wind and heavy rain to check our bags, then were ushered into a cold tent where we had to wait 3 1/2 HOURS to board! Princess did not take any responsibility for their problems and did nothing to compensate us for the terrible experience. Don't think we will use Princess again. We chose this cruise because we wanted the sea days and were looking forward to warm weather in Hawaii and on the way. Unfortunately, there were storms coming and going so we were not able to sit around the pool or use our balcony. There were very few things to do on the sea days in the afternoon. Most of the lectures were at 9 or 10 in the morning and we weren't up that early. It just didn't seem to be up to the quality we expected of Princess. We had the late seating in the Botticelli dining room. The waiter and assistant were very good and the menu varied, but the food was bland even when it was described as spicy. The Horizon buffet was good, but the layout made it crowded and difficult to maneuver. The wait staff there were very attentive. The Magic To Do show and the other shows with the singers and dancers were really wonderful! The Magic To Do was like a Broadway show and probably the best show we have seen on a ship. The other entertainers were good - singers, magicians, comedians, ventriloquists, but about the same as you would find on any cruise ship. We did independent tours in Kauai and Hilo. It was very easy to walk around in Lahaina and Honolulu as we were docked or tendered to the center of town. In Ensenada we were within walking distance of the shops and bars in town. Read Less

It was an easy cruise to get to since we live in Arizona. We just wanted to get away on a cruise where we could just relax so we looked forward to the sea days. Plus we love the Hawaiian Islands so we always look forward to going back there. The entertainment was outstanding. We felt the entertainers were the best combination we have ever had on a cruise. Our room steward (Enrico), dining room waiter (Jack) and junior waiter (Edmund) were fantastic and rank with the best we ever have had serve us. The embarkation was the one negative point on the cruise. With a major raistorm on the embarkation day, the port was totally unprepared. You had to wait in a downpour of rain in a line outside of the tent for over an hour to drop off your luggage. Then you had to wait outside of another tent in the rain for another 45 minutes before you could get into the security tent. The City of Los Angeles should be totally embarrassed that this terminal is totally inadequate to handle a foul weather situation. Many people had the clothes in their suitcases totally soaked from the rain. Several people had clothes ruined from being soaked (like leather jackets). Now back to a positive. The food in the dining room would rank with the best we ever have had. The Chef did an excellent job of having a diverse menu and didn't repeat dishes on a 15 cruise. Take away the issue on embarking, it was a great cruise, Read Less

We actually took this cruise because our good friends wanted to go to Hawaii and they like sea days. I'd read previous reviews , most of which were negative. Everyone was complaining about the condition of the Emerald Princess and how poor the staff were and bad food on board. WELL, I want to tell you they are all wrong!! The ship is due for a referb but it's by no means shabby. Everything was clean and shiny and everyone we came in contact with was OUTSTANDING! We'd never encountered a more service oriented or happy crew in all capacities and this was our 27th cruise. The quality of the food was EXCELLENT. The menus were imaginative and delicious and the Michelangelo Dining Room staff was top rate! Our waiter and his assistant (Lito and Jeffrey) were delightful and made our dining experience memorable every evening. Their Manager Alexander was so interested in how we were enjoying our meals. The cabin steward (Marlon) was pleasant and efficient and our balcony cabin was extremely comfortable. During the entire cruise we were contending with a big storm out of the North and our wonderful Captain Todd made it into all our appointed ports where others cancelled days ahead. He made a decision to stay safely in port in Hilo as the winds and waves were gale force that night. Everyone certainly appreciated that decision!. We had a Valentine's Day surprise where the Captain renewed our vows and presented us with a lovely certificate signed by him! Sorry this is so lengthy but I wanted to put a positive word in for this lovely older ship and her amazing crew. Read Less

Ship A bit dated but overall in decent shape. Dining rooms were well kept up and the casino was spacious. Decks were clean and emergency boats were in top shape. Every cruise I find spots that need painted and this cruise was no exception. However it’s on the decks exposed to the salt so it’s normal to see this. I expect only a new ship is totally rust free. Room Balcony room is smaller then any other ship I have been on (this is #11)- no love seat or table like other ships. On the balcony there were 2 chairs and a small round table. No where to prop your feet up except for the table. Bed was comfy and seems an inch or two larger then a queen. Bathroom was typical and closet was nice size. Nothing exciting. Bortocheli Dining I would rate the food as a “B” overall. Service was good and the ambiance was appropriate for non buffet dining. Nothing really struck me with a wow factor. Usually I find something special but not this trip. Buffet - often the Crew had a hard time keeping tables clean - people wandering taking utensils off of tables, sitting at dirty tables waiting for cleanup. Looks like short staffed. Other ships have you pick up your silverware as you exit the food line. Food was average at best with limited selections for most meals. That big desert section you find on other ships was not to be found. Coffee is bad - the blend they are using tastes like its made up of Robusta beans not Arabica. I think I had the same coffee in the Army. Bingo It’s hard enough to drag a man to bingo but when you add in an announcer who acts as dumb as a 14 year old it’s painful. Last cruise on princess the Captain came down and called the big game. Instead I had to watch a 20 something telling jr high school jokes. Staff Casino staff was very friendly. Wait staff in dining rooms was at the expected high level of service and friendliness. Room steward was attentive. Kirin who takes care of the cigar lounge is an outstanding example of excellent customer service. Read Less

This was my 8th cruise and my second on The Emerald Princess. The tone of the cruise was set by the staff at the Pier. The weather was a factor but the staff attitude was uncalled for. I’m 67 and my husband 70 and we felt too young to be in this cruise. The ship is old decor and the cruisers fit the decor. The entertainment was terrible. The activities boring. If you have 5 sea data you need multiple activities for 2500+ passengers stuck in the middle of the ocean. Activities were knitting, glee club, lei making and the games were so overcrowded it was more of a chore than fun. The thermal spa package $249 was a total waste of money. The spa was coed and the visual was too much. Save your money. The food is average. The specialty restaurants was ok. Nothing to brag about. Casino offered a good escape but costly LOL!! Shore excursions were good except Mexico. Felt so hustled in Mexico. The ship staff overall was great. They don’t smile a lot but you got 2500+ cranky senior citizens aboard, I wouldn’t smile either. I understand you can’t choose your passengers but these were some of the rudest people I’ve ever encountered on a cruise. High recommend if you are 80+ Read Less

Would have been a really great Cruise if it wasn't for the weather. The rain in LA caused Princess to really fall down on the job as far as caring for it's customers during this storm. We were forced to line up outside in the rain to get through security before check-in while our luggage was left out in the rain for over an hour. Unpacking was a nightmare looking for places to hang up all the wet clothing. Once underway, things calmed down abit but we battled rough seas for the first two and a half days. The food was actually much better than we anticipated since the last time we were on a Princess ship (The Ruby) we were very disappointed in all the food including the specialty venues. The internet was vertually non-exsistant and minutes were used with no actual results. Laptop worked best when I took it to the internet café. The cabin was in need of refreshing but the layout is very well thought out. Room could use more electrical outlets. Fortunately, I brought my own extension cord so I could use my CPAP each night and not have to unplg it. Entertainment was very good including some very talented individuals. Enrichment seminars were very well received. Our room steward was excellent and overall the service was very good. We were very happy to be able to all the scheduled ports and enjoyed all our shore excursions especially in Kauai where we had never been before. This was our second trip to Hawaii, our first being on the Celebrity Summit in September. The weather was much better and we felt that the ship and the service was much better on Celebrity. Read Less

This was an amazing trip. We enjoyed our time on the cruise start to finish. From the Captain to the pizza chef, we felt everyone was working to meet our expectations. Our cabin was laid out well and we had a super Stewart called Antonio. The meals were good and the service excellent. We had pizza a few times and it was very tastee. There was a varied schedule of events that were always well led and free. The International Cafe was open 24 hours a day with various delicious snacks and sandwiches. We made all our ports despite the bad weather and the only ship cruising Hawaii to do so that week. The computer lab was well staffed and the guys were helpful and patient. There were several cocktail parties and the ship’s Captain offered passengers the opportunity to have a picture taken with our own camera. Ports and excursions. Great way to see 4 islands in Hawaii without the hassle of plane rides, car rental, accommodations, food, etc. Each island is unique. Maui had an unbelievable number of whales. There were about 10,000 in the area and we were there in peak whale watching season. Oahu was crowded but we did the hop on hop off experience. Saw and climbed Diamond Head, Boy for snorkeling as well as the north part of the island with the blow hole; past the area where Obama grew up and went to school. The big island of Hawaii was probably the most disappointing. Because of the recent eruptions, the tour could not get to where we were expecting to go. Not the cruise line's fault. If you like to be at sea the 4 days going and 5 returning were as expected. In all a great way to see the islands without the hassle mentioned earlier. The days at sea were filled with the usual cruise activities. There was plenty of trivia. Tai Chi was offered early in the day followed by a 45 minute Zumba class that was geared to all people (with various physical levels within the song ). Line dancing was very basic; but the learn to dance classes (7 dances - waltz, tango, swing, etc) were well taught. The entertainment by the cast was well done (Magic To Do is great); the guest performers were average but the 2 comedians were among the best we have seen. The room steward was excellent and very attentive ; the food at the fixed dining was excellent as was the service. In all a very enjoyable cruise. Read Less

This was my first time on a Princess Cruise. Last year, my fiancé and I went on a Carnival Cruise to Mexico and we had an amazing time. We absolutely loved it, from the food to the service to the entertainment. The staff was phenomenal. So our expectations for the Princess Emerald were pretty high. We had a lot of pros and cons in regards to the onboard experience. First, the positives. The International Cafe was our daily go-to (sometimes multiple times a day) for coffee, tea and sandwiches. We bought two coffee cards ($35 each) that cover 15 specialty drinks, which ended up being a really good deal considering each drink cost $4-$5. We really liked the fitness center and used it often, and although we didn’t attend any of the classes, it was nice to see they were available. We went to dinner at Michelangelo’s most nights, and enjoyed the food, service, and the flow from appetizers to entrees to desserts. We never found ourselves waiting a long time to eat. The hostess was fantastic and her energy really added to the positive experience. However, there were some complaints we had about Michelangelo’s as well. They lost our previously purchased and stored wine bottles multiple times, and would usually find them by the time we were ready to leave. One time they never found it, and gave us complimentary wine which was appreciated, but our thoughts were that if they didn’t have a working system in place, they really shouldn’t give the option to keep your wine at the restaurant. Also, sometimes the dress code was obnoxious (my fiancé was told to take off his hat although we saw other diners wearing hats) and I didn’t think it was appropriate to turn away multiple men wearing shorts who had paid good money for the cruise. It just seemed kind of knit picky to me. That being said, for reference, the demographic on this particular ship to Hawaii was probably 80% senior citizens, which wasn’t an issue within itself, but we felt less accommodated and at times somewhat singled out being in our late twenties. The events were mostly geared towards much older adults (although there were a few productions we really enjoyed) and it seemed like everything closed very early. On Carnival, the pools and hot tubs stayed open well after midnight, and here they closed at 10:30PM. The only option by 11PM was the Skywalker’s Nightclub, which was fun sometimes, but it would’ve been nice to have some more choices. The staff in the bars and clubs seemed to thin out also, and we would have to go to the bar initially to get servers to come over to our table, which seemed kind of ridiculous, especially when most of the time they were congregating in an area and not doing anything else. We felt a tad bit uncomfortable in that the pushiness of products and services sales kind of took advantage of and seemed to at times (for lack of a better term) prey on the older adults that may have not been aware of how overpriced things were in comparison to buying the same things off of the boat. We really didn’t like that, and it was something we didn’t see on Carnival at all so it took us by surprise. We also noted that some of the references were outdated, even for the majority demographic, which seemed lazy. One of the productions included music from the early 1900’s, and during an ice sculpting event one of the cruise staff asked the crowd “who remembers before freezers existed?” In that same vein, on days we chose to stay in our cabin we noticed that the channels would play the same episodes of the same shows on a loop for the entire day. This wouldn’t usually bother me, but another huge issue on this ship was that it was terribly overcrowded, so if you wanted to sit anywhere inside during the day most times your room was the only option. This became a recurring problem throughout the cruise. If you wanted to get a seat for a show, you would have to get there at least an hour early to guarantee you got seats, and most events a lot of people had to stand for. This became more annoying when the majority of the productions started at 7:30-7:45PM, so we had to rush through dinner a few times in order to get there by 6:45PM for seats…and then sit there and wait an hour for the show to start. We ended up sitting and waiting longer than most of the duration of the shows. We also noticed the public bathrooms were not very hygienic, and saw urine on the floors often. The Emerald collectively stressed only to use the public bathrooms for an emergency, which was concerning and not very realistic for people to have to go back to their cabins so often. We had two frightening experiences on the elevators, where the elevator would clunk to a floor and the doors wouldn’t open. We soon noticed a pattern of elevators having to be maintained throughout the trip, and by the end we were pretty much using the stairs whenever we could. I will say that our experience getting from LAX to the port was a pleasant one, and very organized. Once we got to the port things went quickly and smoothly, which was nice after a day of traveling. Our disembarkation experience, on the other hand, was an absolute mess. We paid to get our bags “transferred” to LAX, which we were under the impression meant we wouldn’t see them again until we got to the airport. Our group was called 45 minutes late to disembark and once we got off the ship we had to find our bags in the port lobby and take them through customs and onto the shuttle. This wouldn’t have been an issue if we hadn’t paid for something we could’ve done ourselves. Leaving the port and trying to find Princess’ shuttle to the airport was disorienting, and we got to our terminal less than an hour before our flight was set to leave (running through LAX is not fun and I do not recommend it). My fiance’s parents got caught in the torrential rain leaving the port, so having to walk 1/4 mile to the shuttle was even more inconvenient, and by the time they got home their bags (also “transferred”) were still soaked. Overall, we had a mixed experience onboard the Emerald. The price of the cruise and the standards did not match up, we expected much more. We will not be sailing with this cruise line again. Nice relaxing way to Hawaii. 10 sea days, may not be for everyone, but very relaxing. Just fantastic enrichment activities with Lecturer Sharon, on the volcanic, flora, whales, etc. Tiki Dave and his wife were amazing. played and Ukelele classes (ship has some , but may need to bring one. his wife did Hula lessons and Lei making. Final night, an incredible Uk and Hula show from fellow cruisers. Dave lectured on each island, very informative for those who have not attended. 2 lobster dinners for 2 of the 3 formal nights. We preferred 5:15 dining, but our group wanted 7:30, so a bit later than normal. had NFL sports on the big screen and in the room on ESPN. News channels were MSNBC, CNBC, and Fox. lots of moves on room tv, day after they were shown on big screen. Entertainers were excellent. Ventriloquist, comedian, illusionist, new magic/illusion show based on Schwartz music from Wicked etc. and a 70's show. House band from UK ;Atomic was fantastic (did Queen tribute etc) . House orchestra, did some shows in atrium as well and they were great. Usual balloon drop and champagne toast nights. Main theatre is smaller than other cruiselines, so must get there early to get a seat for the 2 evening shows. Kayle cruise director was very good. Lots of trivia contests and Voice of the ocean going on suduku and crossword in library every day, fair book selection, look for personal books left on last day of cruise. borrowing of ship/s books on honour system. Elite snacks every night in Fusion. even played some paddle tennis and ping pong when winds were not high. weather leaving LA was cooler than expected, 50-60's a few days. had at least 2 rough high wind days, made for 10-15 ft swell and waves, other days great. Been to islands several times, so did tours on our own. Kauai walk to nice beach 10 min from ship beside Marriott. there is a hop on hop local bus for $25. Maui, did local whale watching with Maui Ocean adventures, excellent 2 hour tour, 1/2 price from ship on smaller Zodiac vessel. then took $2 local bus from Lahaina for Whaler's Wharf and walk to Kaanapali beach, swim/snorkel by black rock Sheraton, catch bus behind Wharf cinema center across street from tender dock (note long line at end of day for tender, so recommend come back early) In Hilo, walked 2.5 miles from dock into downtown, partly along road, but not too bad, there are shuttles to Wed local market and to Walmart. Honolulu, took free shuttle to Hilo Hatties, to Ala Moana center, then many local buses to all over area, took bus to Diamond head state park, and walked up to top, 600 feet elevation gain and 1.3 miles, so not easy but rewarding view of Waikiki. $1 entrance/ then there is a hoho trolley system and took it back to Waikiki. watched sunset, swam, but beach is quite rocky, than before, due to hurricaine damage. free shuttle also to Walmart. Arizona memorial tour is actually free if you go to nps website and book a time, can taxi over or trolley over, can pay for Mighty Mo tour as well if you wish. Food presentation good and food quality also good. Would not rate as high as Royal, Celebrity or HAL, still acceptable. Also almost 0 children on cruise, average age maybe 70 Aloha any other questions can email me kruzinsathotmail.com Mahalo Read Less

We selected this cruise because I wanted to have a string of at sea days to relax and enjoy the ship. Princess cruises have fabulous itineraries and our cruises have been dedicated to touring the ports on other cruises leaving scant time for enjoying the ship itself. Princess is a favorite because it is a cruise liner in the traditional sense. No mountain climbing or amusement park at sea. Just a beautiful, well laid out ship with a lot to offer for people from every walk of life in the style of yesterday with the all the trappings of of today's designs and interests. Beautiful Piazza, clubs, lounges, great entertainment. Our cabin, A-753 was one of two of the largest and we spent our days at the Lotus Spa enjoying treatments, reading on our balcony, enjoying the fine dining, shopping, taking in shows & trying out new experiences we hadn't had time for before. The Chef's Dinner was totally amazing. So from the start. The ship was beautiful. We embarked without a hitch and by the time we finished signing up for treatments, enjoying lunch at the International Cafe and exploring some we found when we arrived at our room that our Steward Tina had already had our bags inside and waiting for us to unpack. She offered help which was very kind. As Suite and Elite members we had many treats awaiting us and the expanse of the room was wonderful. Where we had thought a dining table and extra area wouldn't be used we quickly found out the more space you have, the more you can fill it up! The cabin was beautiful and although extra large the bar fixture with television in the living room was the same as the full suite we usually take so it was somewhat awkward in that it face the corner of your room instead of the living area itself. Needless to say when we watched a DVD with friends we were cuddled on the couch nearest the sliding glass door and our friends moved the chairs to that side as well. The Tv could not be seen from the other side of the couch! Still all in all, it was a hiccup that was easy to live with. The beds are glorious, the bathroom and whirl tub inviting and we couldn't have been more please. After the drill we relaxed a bit with some drinks and treats and got ready for dinner at the Crown Grill. Let me just say I have never been in a Crown Grill I haven't adored and this one was much more elegant than any of the other ships I had been on and almost twice as large. It looked like a NY Steak House and we dined on our favorite Onion Soup and a Fillet for me, Rib Eye for him! The vegetables, the dessert, the service, the food, it was all what we had expected and more. What a treat. As to other dining, we were once again happy to be at the Club Dining Room where the service was extraordinary. The wait staff was efficient, friendly and knowledgable. The extra items they served there proved to be what we mostly dined on! There's a feel of gaiety in Club Dining when Suite people get to meet each other and enjoy sharing stories and making friends. It's one of the best features Princess has added as far as I'm concerned. The food, which I always thought was okay on Princess was now good and really good! Each meal from service to the food itself was a delight. In the mornings we enjoyed our Suite Breakfast at Crown & Grill and I would have to believe that this is where all our weight came from! The eggs benedict were always perfect. The danish, the salmon, fruit, waffles, mimosas, Nemosas and Bloody Marys were all fabulous. The staff there was always happy, funny and engaging. It was a great way to start off our morning. As for the other venues, we really liked Share. It was our first time there and the "tasting" was extensive, varied and delicious. My favorite is the International cafe. I love their sandwiches and salads and my husband enjoyed their cakes and cookies as well. My favorite lunch place. As for activities, there were so many different offerings for people that no one could be bored. Games, crafts, music, dance, entertainment. You'd have to be totally dull not to find something to do. We like to "do" the Lotus Spa. I love the pampering and the Salon. We enjoy our treatments and opted for 90 minute treatments since we had so many sea days. They offer a new package. Where we did 3-2-1 twice over each they offered a package of ten so we could each have five and then whatever we added had the discount applied. After treatments we would meet in the Thermal room and enjoy that venue as well. So it was approximately over two hours later that we'd emerge and it took up a large part of the day. I also like to get my hair done at the salon after and their staff is always the best we've had. As a five star hotel needs to offer the best in personnel, so does a ship line for those people who know what to expect and want to receive it. They did not let us down. The staff we all friendly, fun and a joy to be with! Before I forget if you haven't done the Chef's table, cough up that money and do it! You feel like you're in a Michelin rated restaurant between presentation, foods and service. It was the biggest surprise for me of the entire trip. Their chefs are incredibly talented and this dinner is their time to shine....to provide a meal they can not do for the thousands they serve. It was too good to be true! And people always ask me about Princess tours vs. saving money and taking other tours. I say, in for a penny, in for a dime. Spend the money. Princess tours are generally well thought out and provide many different options. Face it, a cruise isn't going to introduce you in depth to an area. It's like a poo poo platter in a Chinese restaurant. You get a taste of what you are most interested in and if you want to go back and visit one day, you can! We opted for the Helicopter tour on Hilo which included a land tour of their most recent volcanic eruption. It was amazing. We learned a lot from our guide and totally felt immersed in the activity, legend and rhythm of the area. Couldn't have had a better tour. Enjoyed a lunch at a winery in between & picked up a strange critter on the road to take home to the tour's children. Our small tour group of six got on so well, we did another tour together and did a few more things throughout the cruise. Pearl Harbor's tour was okay, but where I usually choke up, read the names of all the brave heroes who have died and find myself totally part of the historical event, it just didn't happen for me. I'm not sure if it was the tour or the way it was set up or that we couldn't get onto the platform of the Arizona. But i'm glad i went. We also did the Luau that night and although I am glad I went to it I found it to be very commercial and not authentic. It is however, one of the highest rated on trip advisor and expedia and was offered by Princess so I went. I'm glad I experienced it but felt that there had to have been another luau somewhere that I had seen so many times in movies and in history books. The Maui tour we opted for was Whale watching & it was the most active day they said they had. We were fortunate to see so many whales and baby whales all over including twenty feet from our boat! Great and amazing. The last Island is of course known to most as the Jurassic Park/World island although I ventured more to South Pacific. We had a great tour, a sandwich lunch in a park and after we jumped on another helicopter and got to take in the amazing beauty of the Island that has captured so many hearts. I might have sang bali hai but we got back to our cabin and ordered up Jurassic World so we could see on tv what we had seen in real life. As of Ensenada I say nada. We didn't do a tour, I had no interest and the town was kind of nasty. But that's okay, my friends who did the Princess wine tour there loved it! Princess tours are great. And the best part of the tour is of course that Princess will not leave without you when you're on their tour. There had been something about tenders stuck at the ship in Maui that couldn't get near to the door to disembark because of the waves and some type of medical emergency. But as I listened to some of those passengers complain i could only think, Princess doesn't control a sudden rough current and their job when it happens is to keep you safe,, even if you're onboard the tender for thirty minutes. They wanted an apology. Let them go to church. Sometimes I just had to laugh at some of the expectations of other passengers but we all come from different places so it is what it is! Princess did a great job of handling the crisis. Everyone was safe and onboard ship. I don't want this to sound like a puff piece so here is my complaint. Even though I receive free internet with my husband for our level I still value it. And others had to pay. Princess knew that their internet wasn't working well at all. It would take over 30 minutes to download an email if you could! Most times you didn't get anything no matter where you were. It was an old system which didn't deliver. I believe they should have informed people about this. They were wonderful in crediting back your minutes. On land you could find a wifi to hook into and get some things done, but they should have been up front about it. That is my one take away that wasn't positive. I totally enjoyed this trip. I loved having the time to do the things on the ship I wanted to do. Seeing the shows in the theater (when you could get in), the entertainment at the clubs, a martini at the piazza. It was all good. They moved the elite lounge to the Fusion club and it was rather dark and cut up in there so I didn't use it this time but it didn't matter. You don't have to do everything! Yes, I love the happy hour and enjoy it on all the other ships but there was so much to do if you didn't do this. You just couldn't get bored. The people are great, the ship is beautiful, the rooms are fabulous, the food was great. What else could you want? Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise for the itinerary. We always wanted to see Hawaii and we were glad we did. What a beautiful destination (all four islands that we visited). I was especially taken with the fern grotto (it was almost mystical) and something everyone should see in their life time. Embarkation was quick and we were on board before 1:00 pm The Emerald is still a gorgeous ship although it could use a little sprucing up which will happen in April. Pros: The staff. They were all friendly and extremely helpful at every turn. Nothing was too much for them. The wait staff in the Botticelli dining room were the nicest people and professional as well. My husband and I enjoyed all the excursions as well. So much to see but so little time. The drivers and guides were exemplary. International Cafe Ate most meals there as it was fairly decent. Crown Grill was excellent, but ofcourse you have to pay extra for that. Cons: Our biggest disappointment was the food on board. What has happened? The Horizon buffet was not good. Such low quality food. Every day it was just left overs from the dining room the night before. Sushi hot-dogs anyone! Some of it was just gross. The dining room is not much better. Weird combinations of food that had an off putting taste. The prime rib was the only good meal in 15 days. The Curtis Stone restaurant was terrible. $39.00/pp extra and it was not any better than the dining room. I think it was the same thing that they tried to pass off with fancy gourmet names when really it was nothing special and all 6 courses could fit on one plate and there would still be room. I don't think Curtis Stone would have become famous serving this. If you think that throwing a twig of rosemary on something makes it gourmet food, think again. Not all of us are fooled. Disembarkation was horrendous. Caught in torrential rain storm in LA. This was not Princess's fault, but it was the way they handled it. Left a whole group of us in the rain after we left the ship. People in wheelchairs were left stranded in the rain because we did mot know where the buses for our group were located. Were told to go under the makeshift tent but found out that this was only for people getting on the ship. Finally one of our group found the buses at the other end of the parking lot. Out there for 20 minutes soaking right to the bone. Princess employees were no help at all. Side note: the bus driver that took us to LAX was wonderful and tried to help as much as she could. WiFi was slow and spotty at best. Not worth the money. All in all, I am going to try Celebrity the next time in order to compare or at least one of the newer ships. Read Less

Having just completed a New Year trip from hell on P&O Azura along with 2,000 drunk brits we hoped we would that it would not be emulated by noisy drunk Americans and it wasn't. From the start our fellow passengers were polite well mannered charming people from all over the USA enough to make me feel ashamed to be British. Everything on the Emerald was right including an eclectic and plentiful entertainment package to a level of staff courtesy and helpfulness throughout the ship accompanied with good quality food. On the note of high level of service the dining and bar staff were excellent and our cabin attendant was well above average. We have done this trip before with Princess and we were not disappointed with the high level of enjoyment we had previously. Could your staff and management pass on a few tips to P&O on how to run a cruise properly. Read Less

Paid for internet access. Princess knew that their equipment was faulty and internet effectively unavailable. They even posted it at their internet café. Nice people at internet café couldn't get my email working either. The primary purpose of my trip was to be in a quite place to catch-up on work that required internet access. Other than an OK cruise on a ship scheduled for a major overhaul, it was a waste of money. Now I'm 2 more weeks behind. No compensation or refund for lack of internet service was offered. This affected everyone on the ship. Experienced the Chef's table, chef Convery. It was amazing. Definitely a must do if available on your cruise. Our server Stephanie was one of the vest we've ever had. Entertainment staff, i.e. cruise director and supporting folks we all very immature and too young for the crowd. Virtually nothing to do before 10am and many desirable events held during dinner making them impossible to attend. Medicines - bring basic items including cough drops and Robitussin type stuff. Minimal options and very expensive on board. Check out daily events before booking a cruise because there is a lot more than just the ports of call to making your cruise a success. Read Less

This was our first Princess Cruise. We have sailed on 17 previous cruises with other cruise lines. We chose this cruise to sale with six of our friends and the price was good. The ship was old but still in good shape. The cabin was okay, but missing normal items like pens, writing paper, an umbrella and binoculars to use, etc. Our Cabin Stewart, Tina, was wonderful. Friendly, efficient, helpful, knowledgeable and professional. The food was average, plentiful but overall tasteless. The International Cafe had a friendly staff and excellent sandwiches and treats. Our waiter, Jamie, and assistant, Jerome, were great. Friendly and professional. The Matradee at Michelangelo's, was friendly, helpful and professional. The male guest service staff we encountered were not friendly and acted like we were wasting their time by asking questions. The female staff were helpful and friendly. The ship staff was not unfriendly, but not what we call friendly. A "Good Morning", etc when meeting a passenger somewhere on the ship goes a long way toward customer relations. The entertainment was good. The ventriloquist, Dan Horn, was outstanding. The Enrichment Series on volcanoes and upcoming ports by Sharron Faff was wonderful. We would have liked to stay overnight in one of the ports and exclude Ensenada. Would we sale with Princess again? Maybe. We have other cruise lines we prefer. In particular we like Celebrity Cruise Lines. Read Less
