I say surprise surprise for two reasons, this was our first cruise with MSC and my husband had been very reluctant to sail with this Italian company but we were very surprised at the high standard of hygiene, food, waiters etc. We don't usually bother with the shows but thoroughly enjoyed the classical evenings on board the Musica and applauded loudly to Strauss marches and Puccini arias. The second surprise is because of such poor reviews, I feel like I was on a different ship. Our first cruise was with Airtours about 15 years ago and this gave us the cruise bug. We have since sailed with Celebrity(still our favourite) Princess and Royal Caribbean and a few other smaller cruise lines. We met lots of lovely people including a big group of Cubans from Miami, a lovely couple from London and two very lively female paramedics from Ireland all of whom we are still in touch with. The waiters in both the restaurants and bars were all really friendly, quick to serve, remembered what drinks we liked and were interested in where we were from, at the same time sharing their backgrounds with us. We had a balcony cabin and it was just perfect. Trips were well organised and no different to any other companies in the somewhat long and drawn out pre-trip procedures. I have to agree that in general, the French are quite rude, very serious, bad mannered and very, very loud but I try to ignore them and focus on the lovely Hispanic people who love their music and dance and always seem happy. There are so many interesting nationalities on cruises be they crew or guests and I just love chatting to as many different people as possible. However, one big issue did sour a very good cruise and it was all due to the reception staff. Part way through the cruise we had an interim statement which included around $560 for a drinks package. We were sure this was just a simple error as we had already paid for this package with Thomas Cook so we spoke with one of the reception staff who was rather unhelpful, she referred us to her superior who was even more unhelpful. We gave them a copy of Cook's invoice clearly stating the payment for the drinks package but they refused to accept this and referred our case to their head office in Naples. The last few days were very upsetting and we had no choice but to pay MSC the $560. As soon as we returned home we informed Cooks about the issue and after about two weeks of to-ing and fro-ing, it turned out that Cooks HADN'T paid MSC in the first place. Even though it wasn't MSC's fault, they definitely could and should have handled it better, never the less, we will definitely be going on another MSC cruise.   Read Less

Our cruise was widely promoted in Australia as The Grand European Cruise. In fact, it was broken down into 4 separate journeys, starting and finishing in Kiel or Vienna, and catering for different nationalities. Consequently, the longer-term passengers had to endure repetitive evening entertainment, with the same routines catering for an Italian audience and with no options (e.g even when cabin TVs were actually working, reception was dreadful or you paid an exhorbitant rate for movies). Let's look at food. Start with cold dinners served on cold plates in both the restaurants and buffet. Menu rotated every second day. How about no water served with your meals unless you pay extra? Neither water, tea or coffee were on offer with meals. (Curiously, all of these were served to the large number of North American passengers). Cost of a bottle of wine was approx. five times you would pay at home (e.g Rawlins Retreat, a standard Australian wine bought at any supermarket, costs about $Aust10. MSC charged the Euro equivalent of $Aust48. There were no snacks between meals unless you paid for them. So if you want an ice-cream or slice of pizza after returning from a trip around town, be prepared to sign your name on the voucher. Similarly, a trip to the bistro for an orange juice etc between meals is a 'you-pay' experience. Some of this cost can be avoided if you want to avail yourself of a drink ticket. Unless you're a committed alcoholic or can swallow lemonade by the bucketful, it's simply not worth the cost. But don't think of sharing the drink ticket with others, even your spouse. If you buy a ticket, so must the other occupant of your cabin. Food hygiene consisted of unmonitored serve-yourself trays in the bistro areas where some passengers could - and did - ignored the serving forks and preferred to lift food with their fingers, putting it back if they had second thoughts. As to be expected, the hand dispensers placed at the entries to serving areas (including restaurants) were also unmonitored and were frequently empty. Laundry facilities? Not on this ship. Unless you want to pay for the service, wash and dry your clothes in the cabin (MSC has been kind enough to string a line in the shower recess). You're not allowed to bring your own iron. If you'd like a brisk walk on the open deck, don't use the path set aside for that purpose on Deck 7. At least, not while the ship's at sea during the day. It's closed off for cleaning. Cabin telephones? Not working. That's what the foyer near the lifts is used for. Few people would object to the small donations to UNICEF which are automatically deducted from your account. But MSC has been unable or unwilling to explain in whose name the donations are sent to that worthy charity. Surely not in the company's name (where a tax write-off would become available) If you're a poker machine addict, then MSC Musica is the place for you. There's more space devoted to empty pokies than there is to some of the lounges. But if you're a reader, be prepared to pay E15 if you don't return one of the paperbacks which had been donated by a previous passenger in any case. The multi-language selection is reasonable but confined to fiction. None of the passengers I spoke with had any complaints about the cleanliness of the cabins. Linen is changed daily and the staff are courteous, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Similarly, staff at the medical, reception, tour and in the restaurants are first class. Quite equal to the best of any other cruise line we've been on. The deficiencies summarised above can't be justly foisted onto the ship's crew. It's the MSC management which has laid down the standards, costs and procedures. If the company is intent on exploiting the Australian market, it certainly needs to significantly lift its game. As one well-travelled Canadian said, "It's the cruise liners' equal to a Best Western". Read Less

We chose this cruise because the kids were free and since we were getting married it seemed like a good choice to offset some of the costs. This was my first cruise but my husband had previously cruised before on many other ships and if it was just for me I would never cruise again based on my experience on MSC but my husband swears that he's never had such bad experience on other cruises. I don't know where to begin. First, our pool towels were never changed even if I left the dirty ones in the shower, they would get folded and put back on our bed. The embarcation and debarcation was a fiasco at each port. It was disorganized like it was their first time which created long waits. The food in the buffet was limited and always running out, long waits for them to refill the food. There was never any ice at the machine except very early morning. ALL the food buffet and restaurant were "ok", nothing special just ordinary. Everything tasted the same because it lacked seasoning. Usually you have a big "always available menu" for when you don't like the dining menu but there was only 2 options there for the entire week, grilled chicken and fries. The portions were very small, we often had to get 2 dishes because of the size. The service in the dining room was awful. Given the wedding, we had a group of 17 seated together but at different tables next to each other. We never (both tables) ate together the entire week. Their table was always finished 45-60 minutes before us. At our own table, we were never served at the same time either since they would bring out dishes as they were ready and not per table which meant that sometimes 3 people would be eating then 5-10 mins later 2 more plates came then 2 more etc. On the night of the wedding, we decided to treat ourselves to the steak (20EURO/person). The steak was undercooked when we received it (20 minutes after our guests received their regular meals) so by the time we got it back it was 45 minutes later. The whole table was done eating and of course the other table in our group had already left which made it hard to serve the wedding cake (which they brought out as I was eating my steak). They then rushed us out because of the next seating was starting to come in which was the case all week but worse that night considering the circumstances of the wedding and cake. After the ceremony, we were taken all over the ship for pictures with the ship photographer which meant we left the ceremony hall with our personal decorations. We called and asked at service desk for the following 3 days (multiple times per day) and nobody knew where our stuff was and they kept saying that someone would get back to us but never did. We FINALLY received our stuff 1 hour before leaving the cruise. The entertainment was "ok". I expected a different act each night but it was the same all week but with different music and outfits. The dances are basically the same. I wanted magic one night, comedy another, dance another, acrobatic another etc. Also, on special nights such as 70's or white etc, they would close the lounges and disco to force you to go to their activity. That was frustrating. We wanted to go dance but couldn't because it would only open after the other thing was done, usually at midnight so on most nights we just went to bed early. My daughter (15) wanted to check out the teen club, we got there and there were young men (20's) hanging out with the kids and couldn't see any MSC cruise member supervising which is how this happened. I don't want my 15 year old hanging out with 20 year old men. Last issue, we had onboard credits while booking our cruise but the reception desk refused to let us use them. We only found out when we settled our bill at the end of the week. If we would of known, we wouldn't of spent to much. We were spending because we thought we had those extra credits. Read Less

CONS -Embarkation - we were waiting for two hours in the port. The port guy was constantly shouting at you and people waiting. People in the queue were very poorly mannered, kicking, pushing you and trying to skip the long queues -MSC gave us incorrect drinks package and then blamed our travel agent saying travel agent provided incorrect info ( not true) -MSC allocated our preferred restaurant incorrectly and blamed our travel agent asking for that specific restaurant as per our request (not true) -Dirty bedlinen in the cabin ( stains) -Dirty bathroom ( dirty door, mirror, rust and dirt in the shower) -The balcony cabin is old and carpet/ furniture needs to be replaced very badly - The balcony is dirty and rusty - Customer service is non existent -at the very best they will ignore your complaints, otherwise they will shout at you , they could not care less about your comfort or satisfaction -Cold water at all tea stations- impossible to make a cup of tea -The pool was impossible to get into- too many poorly mannered people pushing you out of the way and kicking you ( we have got a balcony cabin Fantastica experience, which was supposed to be a luxury experience- what a joke!) -The Italian staff were very rude , inpatient, poorly mannered. They were constantly raising their voice and shouting at you. Anything we were asking for was too much of a trouble for them - Our waiter at dinner was really good but service in the restaurant during lunchtime was awful - the waiting staff was ignoring you, you could sit there for 30 min waiting to get a menu, the waiter at the door shouted at you when asked to take order ( shouting that he is not taking orders as he is a door waiter) -They will charge you for water in the cabin even when water is included with your package - They will add Unicef charge to your bill without asking you - I have got a severe allergic reaction within 10 minutes of drinking their cheap pina colada at the pool -They will mix french and english speaking groups together on excursions to earn more money, pure greed ( and will still charge you 90 euro per person). -Disembarking was terrible, staff were treating you like a cattle, long queues again for 3 hours, staff shouting at you, people kicking and pushing you, arrival was also late -Buffet was a mess, people running around, pushing you out of the way and trying to skip long queues - The wines included in the 30 euro per day package were very cheap and of a very bad quality , MSC cocktails gave me a severe allergic reaction PROS -The food was very tasty -Ports / towns where we stopped were very nice - especially Dubrovnik , Venice, Lecce, Mykonos, Olympia -Some Asian staff were very good, polite and friendly -Excursions were interesting and well organised ( except for the guide called Eva in Athens - Acropolis, Plaka and Museum tour- my advice would be to avoid this one) -Entertainment was really good Read Less

Used a cruise company to select suitable ship for 70yrs grandmother, daughter and granddaughter 5yrs, our first time on a cruise. The ship was old and tired throughout. Food was awful, commercial plastic produced selection, it was interesting to see what arrived on your plate after ordering, I sent many main and dessert plates back and lived on the fish dishes. I do not eat the poor quality of food that was offered, in my own home and expected to be wowed by the quality and presentation, not once did this happen. Theatre shows, pathetic. Crew were in general, miserable, especially Guest Services desk, used once and dreaded the 2nd and final 3rd time to settle my account. Child play areas on deck, boring. No play room for parents to take children to be together if you did not want to leave your child at the club! We played in the ship's library. No ice cream available, on an Italian ship!!!, no fresh strawberries or cherries, come on they were in season aplenty on shore! My overall impression of this once in a lifetime cruise, to make memories, "Benidorm on a Tugboat". I was offered 150 pounds voucher off the price of another cruise, I just laughed. Never ever again will I go on a cruise, even if offered free. It was dreadful and I just want to forget, worst holiday I have ever had in my 70 years. Read Less

We sail RCI and NCL every few months. Embarkation and disembarkation was shocking - didnt get onboard until 2.30pm as a black status holder. Its 10am now and no one has disembarked yet... we are standing in huge lines. The premium (suite and high value) guests were left standing in the rain for 45 after being taken through security too early with no shelter and the ship wasn't cleared for boarding. The shambolic nature of the cruise didn't stop there. By UK and US standards the food and service in the MDR was horrendous. The decor of the ship looks like a 90s Seniors home. By far the worst part of this cruise was the attitude of the staff towards the English speaking guests. One crew member even told us the American guests are hated because they see UK/US guests as too demanding and having too high expectations. We were nothing but polite to the crew and were replied to with prejudice and rudeness on many occasions. If you have any sort of problem you have to fight your corner... no one will take ownership and actually will become combative and obstructive back. My black status hadn't fed through to the ship and I was given a classic card. No big deal however when I approached guest services to ask for the correct card I was basically accused of lying even though I had three black status welcome emails. Their nature is to pass you from pillar to post. The rudeness is part of the culture of this line. If you're used to American lines please do not waste your money and vacation time suffering this disgraceful service. Our stateroom was tired with very noticable dirty on the carpets and dust on every surface. The dining was the worst we have ever experienced in any hospitality business. Entertainment shows were high quality. Never again MSC we will vote with our money. Read Less

Room not clean - asked to be cleaned again prior to unpacking had to ask for clean pillowcases, face washers Tv not working No satellite reception once you leave a port Water not given at dinner time in restaurant you had to pay for a bottle. No chairs on deck 7 under shelter to sit away from the pool area. Pay for movies Pay for everything extra Can’t go to the front of ship unless you are a top 16 or exclusive. Meals in the restaurant are tiny you have to order double and are cold. Meals in buffet are cold Drinks waiter at table 532 can’t understand a word of English Caos with getting on the ship. So many different stations that it all could have been done at the first one. Long cattle line queues No one to greet you when you get on board Didn’t even realise there was a cruise director. Didn’t hear or see her until the show on the second night and she was as interesting as a wet dish cloth. The whole ticketing system. You need a ticket for this or a ticket or that. While this was ok it was very confusing Couldn’t buy just a water package when on board had to buy another drinks package with less tickets. Ordered and pre paid for a bottle of wine and birthday cake to be in the room when we got on. It wasn’t. Had to ask for it 3 times before we finally received it in the restaurant and again we had to ask for it. The restaurant in squashed in like sardines. Have to pass own knives, forks and plates to other people on table for waiter as he can’t fit through. Head of house keeping should be very ashamed Opted for the laundry package once on board but they ruined all the clothes. The paid for the clothes to be washed and ironed but a 2 year old kid could have done a better job. The outside screen was never on and was told it was broken. The whole ship came down with a virus but there was not infection control to help contain it. We are still recover at home some 2 weeks later. Worst ship ever. Grand voyage my but there was nothing grand about it. We have cruise many times with other cruise lines this one just doesn’t match up to any other will never sail with them again. Read Less

We embarked on the cruise aboard the MSC Musica from Durban to Venice in April 2019 with expectations of the ship not being up to the standard to HAL/Princess/Celebrity but were hoping for an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, this did not occur. From the commencement of embarkation the experience took a downhill curve. Not only did it take hours, passengers had to line up in the direct sun (which was rather warm) whereas a simple redirection could have had the passengers in the shade. The organisational skills of the crew did not improve at all. We have never experienced that when boarding a ship there was litter on the floors, the cabin was dirty and not fully prepared. There were stains on most of our furniture and carpet and the nightly turn down was hit and miss. We purchased drink vouchers beforehand but when we went to collect them we were told that the dining room would have them. This was not the case. It took quite a few staff members to sort out the problem. All waterin the dining room has to be purchased - then you get a large 2 litre bottle plonked on the table. After enjoying a particular wine we asked for it again the second night - only to be told they had no more left. When we found that it could be bought in one of the bars, we asked the dining staff why he said they had no more - he admitted that he was advised by management that they wanted to keep this particular wine for the Mediterranean section and were told to 'get rid' of the cheaper wines. This type of lying was repeated many many times on board. There were no daily newsletters, the customary announcement by the Captain at 12 noon could not be heard - and occurred anytime from 11.30 to 1.30 pm. There were no TV or movies unless you were in a port and got the local channels or you purchased a movie from the ship at US$8 a time. The big screen above the pool never worked. The automatic doors from the bistro to the pool area never worked (we were told by a staff member that they never do) and there was plenty of dropped plates/drinks attempting to man handle the heavy wind proof door. Guest relations were an absolute joke - as one reviewer noted they pass you from pillar to post and hope you don't come back. Many an hour was spent lining up, being lied to and not getting issues resolved. We are not talking 'small' issues. It took 8 visits to get information on how to reboard the ship as we did back-to back cruises. If it was not for our cabin steward we would have left the ship with no documentation as to who we were and that we had purchased tickets to join the second leg. And then when we went to disembark the next day we were stopped by security and had to visit guest relations again as they had given us the wrong cruise card. We have yet to hear back regarding our stolen briefcase from our cabin ot only were staff rude, we found some at guest relations incompetent and unprofessional. The food quality was mediocre which we expected. Entertainment at night was reasonable. Internet packages although expensive worked well. We thankfully had organised our own shore excursions - from feedback from other cruisers that were onboard and went on MSC excursions, they werenot well organised and expensive. If it was not for our own excursion highlights, the trip would have been extremely disappointing. These are only a few of the numerous incidents that we could list. Others range from obtaining a glass of water (near impossible) getting charged incorrectlyfor wine when on 'special', their juice/soft drink packages not including fresh juice to name a few. All in all very disappointing. Read Less

Treated like cattle on embarking took 2 hrs. Bistro closed at 2oc. Didnt get on till then. Room was dirty when we finally got in. Service at night in dining room was terrible took nearly 2 hrs and food was cold. The whole ship got sick with a cold virus. No news from outside world. Only cruise information was at midday from captain that was so quiet you couldnt hear it. Theatre shows were really bad, except for one the Witches show. Three tenors were amazing as well. Crew cast female singer was really bad. Same entertainment in same bars at same times every night. One female singer in piano bar was worse than me and thats bad. Need i go on....if you were to ask anyone who was on this cruise i know they would be of the same opinion not many happy travellers on this cruise. Italians dont have any idea on organisation of any activity. Shower would scald you one minuite then freeze you the next. I had a bad experience with a loose chair seat b4 this cruise only to find more tgan 50% of the chairs in bistro were loose. Upon complaining i was told yes we know madam but if we took them all out to fix them ee wouldn't have any chairs left and our saftey officer is not around. The braai on the Island did not have any proper meat, as per braai. I've been on four cruise thus far and this was the worst. No body was asked to put on life jackets from the ship to the island. South African staff working on the ship were quiet rude. The were hardly any crew members available for assistance. No real live entertainment on Deck as they usually do. We chose this cruise because it left from Durban, South Africa which allowed us to tick off a stay at Kruger National Park as well as a visit to Petra in Jordan. The cruise embarkation in Durban would have to have been the longest, most shambolic and most disorganised we have EVER experienced. The staff, apparently (or so we were told) were new. All we can say is that they hadn't been trained properly (if at all) or they were just inept. They were unfriendly, even to the point of being surly, they had NO idea what they were doing and didn't, really, even seem to care. The LIFE BOAT drill was a joke apart from showing the passengers how to put on their life vests the rest was a garbled, incomprehensible mess, delivered over the loudspeakers (and that's an overstatement, you could hardly hear them) At dinner the waiters were inefficient and had no idea how to serve. Bread was offered from a basket, and bad luck if you were the last served, you got whatever was left. White wine was just left on the table - you had to ask for an ice bucket. Water - you had to buy a bottle or go without, tea or coffee - again you had to buy it or go without. The food was poorly presented and poorly cooked - the choice was limited. The Maitre D was a rude and arrogant man who stood around doing nothing. Tender, at, mercifully the one port, was horrendous - the ship docked at 8.00am, we got off at 12.30pm. Laundry - in by 10.00am, promised for a return by 5.00pm the next day - more likely by 5.00pm 4 days later (and then, only after repeated complaints, to out cabin steward) The lecturers, consisted of just TWO people - a charming lady who talked about the various ports and a gentleman who talked about boats, ships etc. - he was very interesting but he had all the delivery skills of a wet lettuce. The ENTERTAINMENT in the theatre was good - although a lack of LIVE music or stage sets was rather disappointing as was the brevity around 30 minutes. The Cruise Director insisted on introducing each show in about 5 languages - she droned on and on and on The Captain - was a ghost, saw him once. The ship in general, was reasonable, although the pools were rather limited and there was no poolside dining options as with other ships. An oddity was that on the quite wide promenade deck - NOT one chair was to be seen, not one. The one good thing was their alcohol prices - the cheapest we've ever experienced. OMG - for me to EVER travel on MSC again - they'd have to be dirt cheap or be taken over by PRINCESS CRUISES. Read Less

This cruise has always been on my bucket list, but I think my expectations was too high for what they could give. I work in a 5 star lodge and is very focused on service and for that reason I am also writing this review. The cabin was very nice. But dining was horrible you go on a cruise to spend time with your partner but find out that you have to sit with complete strangers and there is no privacy. The food was terrible quality. Prepare to stand in lines for 1.5 - 2 hours a day when you want to go on excursions even when you want to get back on the boat. The islands you go on is beautiful and the buffet lunch Msc gives on them was really nice. The boat is unfortunately way overcrowded and you feel like just a number. It is definitely not a 4 night 5 day cruise the 5th day you have to be off the boat by 7 in the morning. The worst thing is you save up to do as many things as you can when on the boat, and I booked myself a acupuncture treatment the one day, where the "spa doctor" actually fell asleep while I am getting my treatment and then still charge you 65$ I actually can still not believe it!! The normal spa treatments with the therapists was excellent they were really good. I would honestly not recommend this cruise to anyone that want to relax or for a romantic getaway. It was nice to tick that I have been on a cruise off my bucket list, but unfortunately that is where it ends Read Less

There was always photographers taking ransom photos during your cruise, now you have to go to them and it is all unnatural studio photos at USD12 per photo!! Previously You bought a beverage package for the duration of your cruise which included all coldrinks, coffee, tea, ice-cream etc, now you can buy a package that has a maximum of 18 drinks, whether it is alcohol or not for R850 depending on the exchabge rate. MSC Musica was highly recommended, but did not meet the standard. Cabin was dirty, food mediocre and the stuff not really friendly. The only thing that was good was the theater. The shows where brilliant. Otherwise overall it was a waste of money. I am bitter. I paid R12 600.00 but what I got was not worth that at all. I tried to upgrade but the room but the receptionist said that was not possible. I complained about the dirt but nothing was done. I had a balcony cabin but the balcony was dirty for the duration of my our stay. The last guest was a smoker and left a glass with cigarette stubs by the balcony and that glass was there for the duration of the stay. I got tickets for my brother and his wife as a wedding gift and they had a love time, so I was expecting the same only to get the horrendous sevice I got. I am vegan and there was no food. I tried to customize the vegetarian food but there was very limited options. This was a terrible cruise. I will never recommend it to my friends and family. The service is just not consistent. My brother got a great service and I got a bad service for more or less the same price. I am very disappointed and I feel cheated. Read Less

These people's embarkation and disembarkation process is NIGHTMARE. By the time you get on the ship you are dehydrated, exhausted, confused and disoriented and you 're bombarded by people selling packages. Non stop and just overehelming. When you get on you have to wait til 1.30pm for your room and up to 7pm for your bag. Then when you get off the ship they line your bags up just after you walk off the ship. So they are not doing you any favours by taking your bag the night before. Tip: take your own bags. On top of this we were first group to be told to get off and last ones to get our bags. And they tell us our tags may have fallen off (us and 50 others). Our tags were very much still on the bags when they were eventually offloaded. They are just incompetent. Food at the buffet was never enough. Tip: if you're not doing the dining then go to buffet early. We had one decent meal on the trip which was on the first night. Water is not complementary as they make you believe. No water in room. You are assigned to eat in the dining area where they serve you food and you pay for drinks. At the buffet they have 2 dispensers which people flog. TWO dispensers on the ship for 2500 guests. wow. By the way they close the dispensers at 10pm. So pay for a drink or die... they charge $20 for a photo on board. I wasn't going to pay that for a photo of me hot and sweaty after 3 hours in their boarding queues. Cabin was spacious. We had a balcony view which was wonderful. Shower had great pressure. Tip: No lotion or conditioner or vanity kit provided in room. Excursions off shore were worth visiting but queues to get back on board were crazy. Also the food gets finished really fast there too. And noone cares if you ate or not. Tip: go early. Leave early. Tip: take rands for the islands. The souvenirs are cheap and nice. Tip: Eat on time. The entertainment staff were AMAZING and so good. Really that was 10 out of 10. The other staff probably need to be treates better so they can be nicer to people. I witnessed many rude interactions where thy ignored a guest in need and I stepped in to help them instead. Especially at the buffet area. We had a waiter at our dining table who was very unfriendly. I think his name was Wilfred from St Vincent. Pools very overcrowded and smell so bad. They lock the bar fridge the day before you leave. This didnt make sense to me at all. It was the only day we didnt go offshore so people were around in their rooms, hot, thirsty, so why lock the bar fridge? Don't they want to make money. Definitely buy drink vouchers. Even if you dont buy it before u board, you can buy it on the ship. Vouchers save you paying 15% tip every time you order a drink. Read Less

The standards of the MSC cruises have dropped to a terrible new low. My wife and I cruised on the Opera to Mauritius in 2014 and that cruise was delightful. However this cruise was horrible: - Standard of the food has dropped both in buffet and restaurant. - We asked for a first dinner sitting and got a second despite having a 2 year old who went to bed hungry on Friday night due to the pathetically slow service by waiters. - The waiters are rude and look like they're doing you a favor rather than their jobs. - The is no guidance from MSC regarding the procedures such as if you booked an excursion where to go etc perhaps they expect their guests to know all of this. - The buffet dining area should be bigger as people tend to push and cut ques even seating space is not enough. - I hope other cruise liners come to South Africa to give MSC some competition to get it back to it's former glory. From the start of booking my cruise I have had endless problems, The contact Centre was extremely incompetent, they have changed my dinner seating, mixed my cabins up cost me additional money as when I booked the prices were lower. On arrival my cabin was dirty, I had to get new sheets and the floors vacuumed, Workers rude to us on the ship when we tried to make our baby food hot (we carried our own sealed food), we were told to go away. On the first night, my wife waited for 45 minutes for the food to be made hot. Common areas were stinky and not cleaned thoroughly (The deck on some days smelled like sewerage). No baby facility as requested for my room (e.g. Cot) I had called several times requesting this. Entertainment very poor compared to previous trips, shows were not even full. Food was excellent, improvement since my last cruise. Well done. Waiters were good, children enjoyed the kids entertainment. . Excellent service from Puttu, SuperJana (Dinner)and BanBang(Cabin). . The service from the buffet staff was unbelievable, they refused to assist with baby chairs and any assistance in cleaning up of the tables. We cleaned up and had to sort our tables out. Completely opposite to the dinner. Out of my 3 experiences this was my worst. I don't think I will be booking a cruise with MSC after this experience Read Less

i have been on this cruise before and had the time of my life, needless to say this time round i had told all my friends and family join, we were about 21, adults and kids. I had elderly members in my group who had never traveled, now they get to enjoy the cruise and its luxuries with their kids and grand kids. I was to celebrate my daughters 1st and nieces 3rd birthday on board or so we planned. I know you cant control the weather so when we received text message no 5 after our cruise had a 2 day delay due to gale force winds we were still excited to make the most of our holiday. We were told to be in Cape Towns port by 8am the Saturday morning (26th January) for a swift embarkation, unfortunately i spent all of 4 hours in the line with a restless kid in arm. By the time i eventually got onto the ship the halal buffet was anorexic with almost nothing available. The water was choppy but the ship was trying to make up as much time as possible, at one point i thought we were a speed boat, my entire party suffered from vertigo, mostly on the first night. Supper was mediocre and we didn't get a Gala evening. Our waiters seemed exhausted and unwilling to assist, not normally the case in my past experiences. I was on the melody, an extinct and ancient ship for 19 days in 2011 and had the time of my life, this cruise was supposed to be top all my expectations but was an anti climax. We didnt stop in Port Elizabeth and got into Durban earlier than expected. on the brink of disembarkation i was told that i could not leave the ship because i had an outstanding balance on my account. i had to head back to reception where there was a 40 min line because of all the queries passengers had. They billed me $1.50 per person for a UNICEF donation. This should be optional and not a prerequisite payment before you leave the ship. I donate to my own organisations and how the hell do i know that MSC actually gives my money to UNICEF. based on this they removed my charges and i was allowed to leave the ship almost an hour later... If one pays for a luxury experience especially for leisure and relaxation purposes especially if you saving and looking forward to it for months. Its a complete let down when you utilized your annual leave or savings for a trip and us as consumers gets the short end of the stick.. MSC just picks up more people in Durban and can start fresh giving them an ultimate experience. Instead of them cancelling the trip in totality because it would cost the company an arm or a leg, this trip was a taxi service to Durban because you inevitably had to go there as part of your itinerary. The passengers were dragged along for the speedy and bumpy ride and all you can do is compensate us with a lousy 20% on our next cruise excluding service and port charges...HOW IS THAT WORTH IT? do you classify that as compensation for my inconvenience and disappointment? IM BEYOND GUTTED! Read Less

We and our extended family have travelled numerous occassions with the MSC and had pleasant and fun experiences, but the recent trip with MSC Musica was a disaster. We've made a few trips with the ship; Meditteranean cruise, Cruise to Maurituis, Durban to Portuguese Island, Cape Town to P.E to Durban. This was the worst trip ever, having to cram the whole journey in 2 days. We were rocking from side to side due to the speed. Our cabin toilet was filthy and bathroom had no towels. The bar fridge had a plate with left over food in it. I explicity requested vegetarian foods for a few of us, but the selection was seriously few and bad, even the desserts were terrible. (This was our first night on the ship.) The waiter at least arranged for a better selection of foods for supper on the last night at the restaurant for us. We could not dock in PE and it was race to get to Durban in 2 days. The Embarkation was long and tiring, having to wait from 8am to 12 without refreshments and standing in a long queue in an unused warehouse which was bird envested and dirty, having to walk along the ailes to land up in the extreme hot sun without shade. Disembarking was another tiring exercise. We had to leave our bags outside our cabins by 8am and wait in the overly full lounge as we had to be out of our cabins by 10am. We were a group of 10 people, hoping to have a good long weekend on the ship but we were sadly disappointed. I used to tell my family and friends that the best holiday you can take would be on a cruise, I was terribly wrong! Read Less

Well where to start with this one ! I have been on a number of cruises and decided to include one on my recent visit to South Africa, bad choice as this cruise was easily the worst I have ever been on. Too much went wrong to detail everything but I'll have a go. Embarkation at Cape Town was a nightmare. We had to wait 3.5 hrs to board. We had to q up in a deserted shell of a warehouse covered in birds dropping with no facilities, no water, no info from crew, a terrible start to any holiday. Food was of a very low standard, both in the 24x7 cafeteria and the restaurant evening meals. Fine dining it was not, cold soup and badly presented, small food portions, a good way to lose weight ! The service throughout the ship was really poor. Crew did not seem to care and the ones that did were vastly overworked, IE large bar areas took about 20 mins to get a drink as only 1 bar person on duty. This was the norm, it looked as though there were not enough staff on the ship to cope with the crowds of people. The ship seemed rammed with people who mostly camped out in the 24 x 7 cafeteria eating all day. As a consequence it was a nightmare trying to get a a) food and b) a table to sit at during breakfast and lunch. The South Africans on board just camped out there for the day eating. The staff were not that helpful either when you asked them to help you get a table, total chaos ! Hand sanitisers at each restaurant door were either not working or empty. There was no effort made by the crew to make sure every person entering the eating areas sanitised their hands, its a wonder we didn't have a food poisoning outbreak on board. I could go on and on but I am sure you get my drift as to the type of cruise this was. To me it was one small step up from a booze cruise. It was so bad that the Europeans on board demanded a meeting with the Senior staff. We had a meeting in one of the lounges with the Hotel Manager, Customer Relations manager, Second in command to the Captain and the Housekeeping Manager. There were about 200 to 300 hundred irate people complaining to them, BTW the Captain was a no show throughout the cruise not even a tannoy announcement from him. We complained about the service, meals, sanitisation and other items but I felt theses fell on deaf ears. One thing that was said was that the cruises are planned for the local market and they obviously felt the SA people on board were happy with what I would say was a 3 star Spanish hotel experience. They did say that for Europe they upgraded the experience and for North America upgraded even higher. This was a cruise that should have not been sold to Europeans as the standard was deliberately low to match the local market. We asked for compensation but I'm not sure if anything will happen, just make sure if you ever cruise with MSC you dont do it tin South Africa , in fact choose another cruise company entirely. I struggle to say something positive about my 12 day cruise. Embarkation should have warned us what to expect,3 and a half hours in a filthy smelly derelict warehouse with no water or toilets and NO MSC STAFF The staff are demotivated and disorganised very few taking any pride in their work No one listened to anything you asked or said The ship is just waiting for a outbreak of norovirus There was a pile of vomit on the floor staff ignored it for over half an hour No hygiene standards,no hand cleaner at dining areas until the final day Toilets often dirty and floors wet no toilet attendants and often not even toilet paper We left Capetown with virtually no South African wine the food was very poor quality and some of the waiting staff actually apologised for what they were serving When we complained about the standard of cleaning and food we were told by guest relations that the S.A. guests have much lower standards than British which I found really insulting as I am half South African. We have done back to back cruises on other lines and have never had exactly the same menu( which wasn't good the first time),and the same entertainment (which we did enjoy the first time, not so much the second and third) repeated. This was 3 4 day back to back cruises so we had the same meals and entertainment 3 times in 12 days it was like having a recurrent nightmare Read Less
