Boarded the ship in Palma on the 13th October, for what was its penultimate cruise. The ship left port at 23.00 and it was apparent it was a bit rough, leading to the first day at sea, being a nightmare, Both myself and partner had to get seasick pills, for the first time I have to say, normally ok in rough weather. After our first stop the weather calmed and the rest of the cruise was just as good as the first one. All the crew were fantastic and very helpful, from the top to the bottom. Cabins was perfect for our needs, and kept nice and clean thanks to Desmond our cabin cleaner. The food was brilliant, in all the resturants, and the staff were fantastic, very attentive and kept our tables clean and tidy, and replenished our drinks whenever necessary. On the ship were plenty of bars and room to move around freely, loads of seats and sunloungers and on decks that were kept clean and tidy always. On leaving the ship at the end of the cruise it was tinged with dismay to think that in a weeks time it will be moving to pastures new, to be decommissioned as a cruise liner, which is a pity as we had a wonderful two cruises aboard her. we set sail on the Tapas & Tagine cruise from Palma 6 October 2015. All the travel arrangements were well arranged by Thomsons. The ship itself is quite dated and does need updating but was always clean and tidy. The cabin (9500) was adequate and reasonably comfortable. The housekeeping staff did a fine job every day. The food was varied, well presented and tasty. We went to all 3 restaurants over the week. The Beachcomber is self service and is available all day. The island ? Restaurant requires you to be seated and given drinks by waiters but is still self service but you get table clothes etc. the third restaurant, for which you need to book and also pay an extra cover charges well worth it. The food is delicious and is all served by excellent waiters/waitresses who would do any restaurant proud. The Entertainment team, led by Ross, were fabulous. The Bounty lounge team were hilarious. So much fun. We went on a few trips arranged by Thomsons - alameda Gardens and cable car in Gibraltor. The only complaint is that we only has 5 minutes free time on the Rock to look around ourselves. Tetuoan in Tangiers was classed as an active trip but our guide was an old man who used (and needed) a walking stick. He then passed us over to a local guide who spoke English but was deaf. Not really ideal but we saw good scenery. Alhambra (from Almeria) was a good trip but once again there was no free time, we had to beg for 5 minutes to look in a shop to buy a souvenir. It is a shame that Island Escape cruises finish in a couple of weeks because we would definitely go on another cruise with them. Thank you Read Less

This was our second time on Island Escape as wanted to go again before her retirement . The weather wasn`t as kind to us this time and some ports were changed however this didn`t stop us enjoying ourselves. Ship was spotlessly clean like last time and our cabin was more than adequate .Food was plentiful and we also chose to dine at the Oasis restaurant for some fine dining. Drinks included we found to be perfectly fine and didn`t feel the need to upgrade. We are not into the Butlins style shows/entertainment but there are other bars and places to get away from that type of thing . We liked to have a little flutter then sit and listen to the music in the sundowners bar ,John on guitar was the highlight of our evenings . We will miss the island escape and her laid back appeal but will be trying the Spirit out next year. Read Less

Food again adequate ,lots of choice and themed evenings also it was nice to dine at the Oasis for a change one evening. We found the inclusive drinks to our taste and didn't feel the need to upgrade . Although the ship is tired in places we found it clean and our cabin spotless . This time we weren't as fortunate with the weather and some itineraries were changed however this did not stop us enjoying ourselves and all the ports. We don't really like the ' butlins' style entertainment/activities and shows etc but there were plenty of places to get away from all of that . After dinner and a flutter or two we spent our evenings in Sundowners bar enjoying the very talented John on guitar. We will miss this laid back ship but have happy memories from our time onboard. Just got back from a 2 week cruise and stay, went on Island Escape as I enjoyed it so much last year and it is excellent value. I like others am sorry she is going out of service, but it appears the crew have a good chance of staying together on her replacement. I remember Ross Roberts from last year and thought he was good, but this time me and wife had chance to appreciate what a good all round entertainer he is, I also think he is hillariously funny and being camp suits this. I have no moans at all, although I am sad to see again others do nothing but knock the ship, wingeing over the stupidest of things, my advice to those who have done P&O, Cunard, Holland America etc, stay with them if you dont want to go on an informal cruise, (is quite simple). I met many who have done these lines but prefer to be informal, so that works both ways, similar to my review last year I say "champagne tastes lemonade pockets" for some, and as for comments about the ship smelling is ridiculous anyone who is honest will tell you the staff are forever ensuring the communial areas are clean, so well done Island Cruises and I hope the new replacement for 2016 continues to provided good crusing at economy prices Read Less

Cramped ship Lots of horrible people getting drunk, the public areas smelt of sick. The food was tasteless in the main restaurant The paying restaurant was good however and the ports were wonderful This is the first bad cruise we have been on The buffet style meals meant we had fewer chances to talk to fellow passengers as people were constantly on the move. I prefer a set menu with a chance to chat before courses with other passengers We have been on other cruises, this was the worse. I would be OK with this had the cruise been cheap, but for the same price we had two weeks on p&o last year with spending money which covered our drinks. P&o was better value and the people were pleasant. Likewise cruise and maritime and Thompson dream were also good Island escape was butlins on sea Didn't do any excursions as we planned our own trips Entertainment was mixed but spoiled by the awful passengers Read Less

I will try to be a constructive as i can as we enjoyed the concept of the cruise but NOT the Islands Escape Ship. Arriving at the port and going through all the boarding process is very easy and got to our cabin without a problem. We then went for a wonder and headed for the Beachcomber for a cold drink and a snack. I have to say it wasn't that bad but bear in mind that everything you eat from is plastic and people just wonder around in there swim wear with no shoes on. Don't look inside the cups as the stains will put you off. Not pleasant but hence the word informal, that's the Beachcomber. We then went to our cabin and unpacked our cases. Then it was off to Palma as we didn't sail until 23.00 and really didn't want to sit on the ship all day, especially as we had a day at sea on the Wednesday. We arrived back at around 19.00, had a shower and went to the Island Restaurant. We waited to be seated and went to explore the Buffet for our dinner. Please note you will be seated with others but we didn't find that a problem as the majority of people would chat and make everyone welcome. The food was good and plentiful and a lot of choice. Plates were also China and you had table cloths on your table and napkins. After dinner we went to the theatre to see the nightly show, sorry no choice on this cruise as it is a small ship, and the young guys and girls are good with the limited resources they have. The Theatre is all on one level and gets very busy and cannot hold everyone. So when full that is it i'm afraid. They serve you at your table, with your drinks, so a pleasant hour was had. The shows vary and you will enjoy it i am sure. One bloke who did get on our nerves and that is the so called Entertainment Director. My god does he love himself and loves to remind everyone that he is gay. He really needs to get into the 21st century, people are not bother if people are gay anymore! I then went to the casino and had a little flutter and we went back to the cabin at around midnight. The next day was at sea and we were awoken at around 06:00 by people on deck 10 moving their sun beds into position. Sad or what? When we finished breakfast, Island restaurant, we went back to change and went up on deck about 10.30 to grab a sun bed. NO CHANCE! they had all gone and if there was no one on them, then their towels were. We went and sat on some hard chairs, on the Beachcomber Bar, and chilled and was now looking forward to out first port of call, Corsica. Then we went back and sat on our balcony as the sun stayed there until sunset which was great. We ate in the Oasis restaurant a few times and enjoyed the fine dining experience, although you pay extra for it, it was great to be waited on. £14.99 per head but worth every penny. I wont go into the ports as we done our own thing and had a fantastic time visiting different places. Those memories will stay with us, for all the right reason, but the Island Escape took the edge off the cruising experience. We are going to do another cruise but next time will ensure we do our homework, not be hoodwinked by Thomson's, and pick a better cruise ship. Pros: You will visit some great countries and meet some great people. Cons: The ship is old and very tired and although the staff are excellent, some have been told there contracts will not be extended so are very down in the dumps. Do not expect luxuries and you will be fine. Take your break, enjoy the sights and don't think too muck about the ship. Read Less

Let me start by saying we had a fabulous holiday around the med on this ship and I'm sad to see it go. This ship has had its fair share of bad reviews however as a first time cruiser I have nothing more to compare it with other than the time I had onboard. Yes with the age of the ship it was a little dated but it certainly exceeded my expectations. Embarkation was swift and so well organised we quickly were given key card to our cabin and everything was ready for us to settle in. The cabin was 7550 on deck 7. It had 2 twin beds and a fold down bunk which was not needed, a picture window, It had lots of hanging space and drawer space and space under the bed to put suitcases. Believe me I took a lot of clothing and there was more than enough room for what we needed. The bathroom again was small but perfectly adequate with shower sink and toilet with toiletries. Satpal our cabin steward deserves a special mention. He was a most efficient cabin steward who kept our cabin extremely clean and tidy and basically looked after our room for the 2 weeks we were aboard. I loved the towel art he added as finishing touches and he was so happy and polite. Let's move forward to the dining areas. Dining was buffet style unless you booked a la carte at an additional charge. It was help yourself style and for what I paid for the holiday I most certainly can't grumble about the standard and choice of food. There was carvery meat and veg on every night and many different alternatives. Choices of starters and desserts too? The waiters again were extremely helpful and Midy and Ronny deserve a medal for looking after us. They looked after us so well it made our mealtimes very special. Drinks on board were all inclusive unless you ordered cocktails, branded drinks and speciality coffees fro the cafe. The unbranded drinks were excellent and the supplement cocktails were at very reasonable suplpliments we tried the hot stone a la carte and found it a great experience. Next to mention was the entertainment. Ross the entertainment director has a very special team of entertainers. Including Ross they are all extremely talented and provide entertainment as good as the west end. I can say this as I've been to watch many shows in the west end and I found the musical showson ship as impressive. The other entertainment was from a very young team and I can't say enough how talented this young team was. As for Ross he was fantastic (and doesn't do the amount of work for a chuffing 0/10 and quite rightly too) it certainly wasn't Benidorm at sea as one review described it. We did many excursions and I thought were organised extremely well and I thoroughly enjoyed them even though I walked my socks off. However I didn't go on a cruise to spend my time on the ship when there was so much to see. Finally all people I spoke to had a fabulous time and were pleased, they booked it. There were many planning to cruise again with thomsons in the future because of the experience. Hopefully this review will set those peoples mind at rest for the four weeks of travel this ship has left. Read Less

As always the food was excellent & the staff too. It's a shame it was all inclusive as we did not get our monies worth as we don't drink that much but the drinks we had were good. Our cabin 9514 which I chose was very disappointing very small compared to the cabin we had last time on deck 9 beds were comfy & I wanted to take the pillows home with me. Altogether though we had a brilliant time and we will miss The Island Escape very much. Well done to all staff. Read Less

We arrived at Palma on 1st Sept 2015 transfers to ship was well organised and efficient. Cabin was small but sufficient steward service was vey good. Koko even repaired a little alarm clock we thought was broken and put back in cabin for us (excellent service). Entertainment crew were brilliant all shows by them were great and the rest of team were fun and friendly doing all bingo quizzes games etc. 2 of our trips were cancelled which was disappointing and the Soller Train in Palma - it would have been nice to have been given information of how to do this on our own instead of having the other trips pushed at us. We found out this was an option from other passengers later. Also we thought the trips were very expensive £38-£42 just for a coach ride to Rome/Florence not good. Unfortunately we had a flood in cabin near end of 1st week due to rough seas, again staff were helpful but no spare cabins except front of ship where it sounded like a cannon was going off with water hitting front of ship!! We remained in wet cabin for night and next day till we could be moved when back in Palma. Compensation was adequate but an upgrade for inconvenience would have been preferred. Food was excellent but didn't appreciate having to pay for ice cream, when stopped in all inclusive hotels this has always been included. Although it was described as a casual cruise an odd night for dressing up would have been nice even if only when going to paying restaurants. Big problem with lifts mid-ship as the biggest was out of order for nearly all cruise - not good with all old and many people bad on their feet. Was told this was out of action last season as well! Also lack of sunbeds caused problems on day at sea each week many people were wandering round looking for them and sitting lying where they really shouldn't have been even in front of showers by pool etc. There was a supposed rule about leaving your sunbed for longer than 45 minutes and towel would be removed, we told a member of staff one had been left for over 2 hours and was told "well you don't need it"!!! Just returned from a week away with my wife and two teenage kids aboard the Island Escape, and despite the sometimes bad reviews, can well and truly say that a good time was had by all. We chose this cruise because of the stops at Civitaveccia for Rome and Naples for Pompeii, and these were both great places to visit. Olbia and Calvi were a bit disappointing though. The highlight for us all was the onboard entertainment and the food, which were both of a good standard. The organised trips were a bit expensive, but were well organised. The ship is a little tired, but the crew worked hard to keep it shipshape. If you have sailed with one of the more upmarket cruise operators, you may be a bit disappointed, but the relaxed atmosphere and dress code was great for families, especially those with children. My first cruise, and not too good on water I was very apprehensive. We arrived in Palma to a thunderstorm, so knew straight away the water was going to be rather choppy! Our cabin was clean, tidy, the beds were extremely comfortable and after unpacking we started a wander around the ship! Many bars and restaurants, loads of sun beds, swimming pool dominated by the children, but an hour each day designated to over 18's. Tons of activities, quiet spaces to sit and relax, and the staff so accommodating, what more could you wish for? Food was buffet or if you paid extra waiter service in other restaurants was available. We enjoyed the waiter service and went twice rather than the hustle and bustle of the free for all buffet. Our cabin was near the rear of the ship so each docking was heard for about an hour by vibration and smell of diesel so not very pleasant, but as it was just to sleep in as there was so much going on, it was ok. Our cabin cleaner was always on hand and helpful, a surprise each night with the towels kept us laughing. Excursions were good, a coach full of people though is a lot of people to show around on tours, maybe 2 tour guides per coach would be preferable. Just remember some ports are miles away from the main towns so use the coaches to get you there. Would I do it again? Never say never, but not in the foreseeable future. Read Less

Family of 5 with 3 teenage boys age 14,16,18 First time on a cruise. I really don't know where to start, On booking this cruise we were told that the ship was old but still in lovely condition, I went into Thomson as I had read a few reviews and was getting a little worried, but was reassured that the ship was ported over winter and made like new, so it would be fine and not to worry. I was also told that internet was available to purchase on board (it was, but it never worked not for the whole two weeks) and we tried every day. My case managed to go missing between the coach and ship, it turned up later, not a great start. Then as I made our way to the cabin I was getting a little concerned. The ship is in a bad way, things hanging off, dents in doors and walls and things broken. Our cabins were no better, the one had a dent in the door which looked like it had been punched, inside, broken draws, dents and marks all over the wall, broken light switch's (well the ones that worked) rubbish TV you could not see anything out of the window as it always had condensation on it and paint drips all over it. The room was really bad, not even 2 star standard. Next day we were at sea all day so had no choice but to check out the ship. Pool is so small and jam packed, I walked around the decks for two hours trying to get a sun bed with no luck. Everywhere I looked I could just see things that needed fixing. I was getting really upset by the end of the first day at sea, the boys were moaning as they could not connect to the wifi, Teens club did not start until 10pm and there was just noting for them to do. This is not a holiday for Teens, maybe for younger kids under 10 or for older people. Music is The Shadows and stuff from the 60s and not the good stuff. I spoke to guest relations manager, I explained that I was really upset and did not feel this was what we had booked. She never once apologised and said if I wasn't happy I could pay for our own flights home when we ported in Palma on the following Tuesday. I was so shocked no sorry, no offer of a better room or to try to get us a hotel for the second week not even a free meal in the al carte restaurant. When I said I would like to speak to someone from Thomson she said they did not have a Thomson rep on board and gave me a number I could use to call which was just the regular number. I Emailed Thomson next day when we got on land to tell them of my issues and the email I got back was no better then the service received on board. They said staff on board had tried to help and where sorry I was not happy. I was really confused as no one had done anything to try and help us. The only good thing about this holiday was getting off the ship, the food was ok and our cabin steward was lovely, I got the expression that as the ship is ending this year no one cares anymore so are not bothered about helping you have a good holiday. The hall ways always smelt of sick, the ship was really rocky some nights, we had to come back to the ship to early most days so you don't get time to have a good look around we had to be back at the ship on the one day at 3pm! My son got sick on the second day with a sore throat, he was in a lot of pain and running a temp, so we took him down to see the ships doctor. He did not even examine his throat until I asked him if he was going to look, and then he said he may have angina, Now most people on the ship were over 50 and may have angina, but I am pretty sure he had tonsillitis. Over all this was the worst holiday we have ever experienced. Read Less

The food in the Beechcomber is 24 hours, and always of good standard. Entertainment matched, if not exceeded anything on terra ferma. The entertainments team work so hard to ensure that everyone is catered for from shows, the quiz (my personal favourite) and comedy etc. the ship overall as a former ferry is small, but intimate. You can arrange your own, but do some research and ensure you are back onboard by the time the captain announces daily over the tannoy and ships daily sheet. The stench from the pool was sickly 1st two days before they decided to clean it, and even then I was not getting in it or nobody else was either by the looks of things. All inclusive, but you had to buy icecreams and what ever else they could get you to buy felt harassed by that .Cabin was small but ok & yes the ship is old I knew that, but people including myself are paying good money for this holiday so shouldn't be letting things slip, excursions were good but back on ship very bored until evening entertainment was average although I did love the comedian Ruddi. Staff were ok but wasn't going out of their way, I heard I member of staff being quite loud ,abrupt & extremely rude to 1 elderly gentlemen. Some choose what guest they seem to want to be nice to. Also if anyone can explain why we left ports so early ie anytime between 4pm and 6pm and then park up somewhere out at sea for 2 to 3 hours, I'd appreciate it. As we were first timers I wasn't sure what to expect, but on this experience I'm afraid cruising isn't for me!! Oh, and why when you book All Inc. Should you have to purchase an upgrade to get proper glasses, be sold pints and have proper beer and spirits. It wasn't all bad though, here are my honest marks out of ten.... Staff 10/10. Entertainment 6/10. Cleanliness 9/10. Food 9/10. Facilities 2/10. Read Less

Recently back from a week on our first cruise and for the money it was super value. The food was very tasty and always a good selection, for me the drink was fine, the service was first class. The entertainment was first class and all entertainers should be commended on this and the cruise director led by example which is great to see, even thou the ship is old I always found it very clean and was constantly been cleaned throughout the day. Our cabin was spotless and our stewardess Lelani had a towel formed into a animal for u every evening and she was so polite and nice, thanks for a wonder first cruise made super by staff that care. My first ever cruise though my wife has been on several. The boat is dated and has obviously seen better days but this is more than compensated for by the extremely hard working staff who do their utmost to keep the cabins etc spotlessly clean. All the staff without exception were hard working courteous and conciencious in their duties. Food was plentiful and adequate as were the inclusive drinks. The ship is rapidly approaching the end of its commercial life after over 30 years in service but we will always have fond memories of our experience and the wonderful crew. Read Less

First of all to anyone thinking of going on this ship for the first time, if you have been on other bigger ships with other companies then you will probably think that this ship is not as good. However if you remember the price that you have paid fore this one compared to other companies then I think you will agree that it is well worth the money. My wife and I had an outside cabin (7054) on Deck 7 and yes it had obviously seen better days but it was kept spotless by our cabin steward Morrison who must changed the towels twice every day as well as making a different animal out of some of them every day. The food was better than we had had in some Thomson Gold hotels and there was something to eat literally 24 hours a day as well. The drinks were also perfectly fine....anyone who complains is obviously very picky indeed. I like my beer and my wine and the ones available on the inclusive list were very good....I preferred the red wine and my wife said the white was very good (and she IS particular about the wine she drinks). I am whisky drinker myself and as expected the malt whisky and major brands were to be paid for but I could fine nothing wrong with the blend they gave me form the all inclusive list and as for the gin and tonic and cocktails....they were as good as you will get anywhere. You can upgrade to "top shelf and premium drinks" but it is not necessary. We ate in the "paid for" restaurant one night to celebrate my wife's birthday and it was top class but again there is no need to do that as the meals in the restaurants were top quality anyway. We did not take any of the Thomson trips as in every port we docked in we could walk into the nearest town or resort but there were some good excursions available if you have already been to places like Rome, Pisa, Florence etc. As others have already mentioned this ship is going out of commission at the end of the season which is a shame as it is well loved by many of its regular cruisers.... we met a few who have been on it several times or even more...and its crew are the friendliest and most helpful that you will find anywhere, hopefully they will all get jobs on the new ship when it takes over. I am not a show person myself but I kept my wife company on several of the shows and I have to say I enjoyed every one...Ross the Host ans the 10 young people in the shows worked so hard to give all of us a good time. We did not sit around the pool at all as that is not our scene but it was well kept and busy every day....all the beds were well used and there was entertainment as well. In fact there was something for everyone....apart from moaners and really picky people who just love to complain. Try it if you can before it is too late. Read Less

Just returned from our first cruise on the Island Escapes and was pleasantly surprised. The boarding process was efficient and quick, our luggage arrived at our cabin within 1 hour of boarding. We had an outside cabin on deck 7 which was small but spotlessly clean with lots of hangers & storage, totally adequate. All the staff were very friendly, hard working and helpful. Restaurants were spotlessly clean, with an excellent selection of food to choose from. We used both the all inclusive restaurants but didn't use the Al a Carte restaurants as we were totally satisfied with the others. The all inclusive package was very good except that we thought that bottles of water and coffee outside of the dining rooms should have been included. The entertainment team were very talented and hard working and produced some fantastic shows. I have to mention in particular Ross the cruise director he was brilliant, funny and very talented. We haven't laughed so much for a long time. There were also outside acts brought on board in particular Andre ( comedian/Magician) who was also very good. It is hard sum up what a fantastic holiday we had in a few sentences but we would definitely do this again. We also met some lovely people on board, some of who we will keep in touch with. Lastly I would like to say a big thank you to all on Island Escapes for making our holiday so memorable. Read Less

Booked two weeks on this ship in June 2015 but had to leave after the first week due to the rotten state of our cabin, poor food and ‘non inclusive’ (all inclusive) package. Thompson sells this as an ‘All Inclusive’ package but in reality only the minimum is supplied and everything else had to be upgraded. The ship itself is very tired and dated and is due to be de-commissioned. Clearly the operators have decided not to invest it its final season and as a result we found lots of defects both in the cabin and public areas. Service on-board is friendly but the guest relations team unable to assist with the most basic inquiry. If you enjoy a ‘holiday camp’ type experience then I think you would be ok, however to the more discerning traveller it falls well below the standards of even 1 star accommodation for a basic cabin. The food is very bland and repetitive with the buffet options just being continuously re-cycled. The drinks included with the all inclusive package are limited. In fact the crew were unable to tell me what larger I was drinking (although they use ‘fosters’ pumps to try and give the impression it’s a branded drink). All in all I would give this company a big wide birth and opt to go with one of the more established cruise operators. Read Less
