This cruise fit into my schedule, also I liked the itinerary. Most of the port I have never been to or its been many years since I visited them. I was especially looking forward to Bilbao Spain and Portland England. I reserved an oceanview view unobstructed view guarantee. @ days before departure, I was told my cabin number. They gave me an obstructed view room. When I called Princess, they assured me that it would be changed for me when I check in at the ship. When I checked in I was told to see guest services on the ship. They told me that all they cabins were full, If someone doesn't show up, they will let me know tomorrow and make the change. Twice, guest services gave me excuses, no one cared that I didn't get what I asked and paid for. I finally was able to speak with the Hotel Manager. Dana was very nice, she explained to me that the ship was overbooked by more than 10 cabins. She said she would ask corporate what they would do for me. A couple days later, someone left a phone message in my cabin, they offered me a $200 on board credit for my next cruise- I was insulted! $200 was the additional amount that I paid for the unobstructed view, but no refund, just an onboard credit for my next cruise. If they wouldn't "do me right" why would I cruise with them again? The cabin was nice, except for the lifeboat that I was forced to look at outside the window, it would be nice to have a chair in the cabin as I like to sit and read often. The cabin attendant was excellent! The dining and buffet staff were also very good. The food was lacking a variety of choices, also the small portions didn't have a good flavor. I was underwhelmed by the food! I like to sit by the pool and read, however the loud music and loud movies took away that pleasure. The public rooms were usually noisy from the activities just outside of the rooms. The public rooms had out of date décor and furnishings, too much mirror and glitz. Most were not functional for events- good only for drinking with friends, but they still events there all the time. I like that the ship was not huge, I prefer smaller ships, less lines especially when getting on the off the ship at the ports. Overall, I doubt that I will return to Princess, the impression I was left with was that they did care much about me, this was my first cruise with them, they cared about those who have been many times. I have been on over 50 cruises and have generally enjoyed most of them. This is the only time I have ever written a review after a cruise. I was so unhappy. I am taking cruises with other lines in July and August, lets see what happens. Read Less

We had chosen this cruise because of the itinerary. We traveled 3 generations including 2 children ages 7/10. The food was beyond horrible. We are vegetarian and they put meat in our food in the main dining hall. Guest Services was awful and did not even try to remedy the horrible food. The cabins are small and outdated. The entertainment at night (nightly shows) were awful. The comedian was not funny. Even my kids didn't like the Kids Club. The room attendant was nice and was the only part of the cruise that was good. Port stops were great. We didn't do any Princess excursions. We did excursions with other groups. Princess gave us no information on what do when getting off the boat. I would go to the Mediterranean again any day as it is beautiful but I will never travel with Princess Cruises ever again. Especially if you are a vegetarian definitely do not take this cruise line. Read Less

To see if Princess could make amends for problem laden Hawaiian cruise and restore faith in Princess. This was their chance, did they succeed, not only did they fail to resurrect their product in our eyes they reinforced our decision never ever again. 1) Get on board just before 5.00 pm and hear announcement “Muster drill will commence at 5.30 pm” we immediately go to a bar and ask for two drinks, waiter says “Yes Sir”. Waiter go to sort out drinks his Manager says No. Waiter informs us, we ask to speak to manager, manager reluctantly appears and we question his decision, he says can’t serve whilst Muster drill has commenced. Announcement says “ Muster drill will commence in ten minutes “ We ask manager to reconsider, No. Not a good start to the Cruise. Picking up sunbed towels from the clean/new towel bin found several with large brown stains on them so threw them into the used bin, staff came to watch and as I found more stained towels and showed them one of them gave a classic Gallic shrug. Towels went in the bin. Sadly we found cabin towels also stained prior to our using them. In the cafe clients were filling their personal water bottles from the water machines and they were coming into contact with the taps, staff nearby said nothing and did nothing to stop it. I surely do not need to point out the ramifications of this to cruisers. Anytime Dining. Now I understand the word anytime to be just that, NOT princess, apparently anytime means anytime after 7.30 pm or if the maitre’d likes you. If you challenge the maitre’d he is quite happy to have a very public disagreement with you. Disembarking. Now does this have to be a problem? The ship docks early in the morning, your flight arranged by Princess is at 7.00 pm. You are requested to be at your disembarkation point for 10.0 am . At 10.15 am you are placed on coaches for a 75 minute ride to Rome airport and dumped to fend for yourself until your flight at 7.00 pm. All the better cruise lines leave you on board and allow you to use cafes/ sun beds etc until nearer your flight time. Princess comments are “you could have gone on an excursion or you could pay a fee and stroll around Rome for the day” . Anything but stay on board, we feel Princess attitude is we have had your money, either spend more or get lost. Their final comment is we do take great note of customer feedback, well take note never again. I have not listed all complaints. Read Less

This was the worst cruise we have been on in over 60 cruises. The ship was in Dry Dock and when it came out it really was not ready for guests. When we reached our cabin we found some ones excrement in the bowl in our bathroom. When we told our cabin person he told us he had let guest services know about it and that the bowl would not flush in the morning, and they still had not taken care of it. We waited about an hour till it was taken care of, but no one came to sanitize it. We will be getting in touch with the CDC about this situation. They really had no idea who came to the muster drill, the scanner was not working, and no one took cabin numbers, putting everyone on board in danger in the event of real trouble at sea. We went to dinner and when we came back my wife went in for a shower, when she came out of the shower she realized there was no towels or robes in the bathroom, just the bath mat. I called down for towels 3 times, it took close to an hour before they were brought to the cabin. my wife dried herself with the bath mat. We had no air conditioning For the first two days they said it was fixed but it was not. We had to have someone work on our bowl in the bathroom 3 or four times. The same with the air conditioning. The first 7 days of this 14 day cruise where pure hell, the second 7 days where better. We sent food back more times on this cruises then we have in our 60+ cruises before this, and so did our table mates. We have 3 more Princess cruises booked, and are about to cancel them! Read Less

My husband and I travel quiet often. Love cruises but this one was the worse. We booked the 25 days, Ft. Lauderdale - Rome. Bad from the start. We were notified to be at the terminal at 2 PM., so we did. They had us sitting on very uncomfortable chairs until 6 PM. Had no idea why, never a reason, never an apology. The next day, the Captain offered us a free glass of wine (cheap one) for the inconvenience. The story continues: Will not get on a Princess ever again. Except for 3 days, the food at the main restaurant was "cafeteria quality". Juice and regular coffee only free during breakfast hours. After that, $$$$. We had a mini-suite D202, and for one whole week, we kept reporting that the bathtub was clogged. It took one week to repair it. The quality of the soap, shampoo,etc, provided was terrible. We had to buy toiletries at the first port we touched. They had the worse entertainment ever and on booked excursions, on each one, they made us wait on the designated meeting place for one and a half hour before moving on. They even played some video clips (advertisement) to keep us calm. You get up at 6 AM to be there on time and then, they waste 2 hours of our time with no explanation. We purchased the maximum Internet plan. I believe is 600 minutes, well, we consumed all of them TRYING to connect to the system. The worse Internet system I have experienced on a ship. We feel that they had no respect for the passengers. NEVER AGAIN. By the way, we paid for a balcony mini suite. D202. Read Less

We chose this Cruise on the Crown Princess because of the variety of ports for 25 days. It had just come out of dry dock and full of problems...leaks in many places, laundry facilities not working, vibrations, late and unprepared check-in and the worst selection of food lacking any imagination. The hallways had ripped wall paper, the cabin carpeting was old and the ship had an elevator that had water leakage, so it was closed most of the cruise. The entertainment was very good. However, there was boring lectures during the day; no exciting topics. The manager of the Customer Relations was very rude to several people when they were upset about the laundry facilities not working. When we expressed our problems with this cruise, the Captains Club manger said "You should have booked a newer ship". The theater on the ship was too small and filled. In order to get a seat, you had to be there 1/2 hour early.The fitness activities were lacking classes.The shore excursions from the ship were above average tour guides.Thank goodness for Cruise Critic...we were able to sign up ahead of time for duplicate bridge games and everyone was so kind. We take two cruises a year with Princess, and are members of the Elite Status in the Captains Circle, and we liked the Trans-Atlantic Cruise we took last year so we decided to take this one because it was going to Ports we never been to before. I turned out to be the wrong decision since this ship had problems from the very start. Coming out of dry dock, we expected a sparkly clean ship ready for a lot of cruises. The ship had rust over many places on the outside hull, our room wasn't clean, carpets were being replaced during the cruise in the common areas and you could smell the adhesive so we avoided those common areas, our room needed to have the carpet replaced it was stained so badly and air freshener doesn't cover old dirty smells in the room, we sent laundry of the cleaners and the clothes came back with dark spots on the clothes and the clothes smelled terrible. We like to sleep with the balcony door open at night, but the door between our balcony and a neighbor's balcony banged all night so we closed our door, but then the air conditioner with it set to the lowest level didn't cool the room down. The walls in our room creaked all night and the bathroom door did the same. The new beds were nice, but we couldn't get a good night sleep for the whole cruise. My room key had to be replaced 3 times during the cruise and the staff at the Purser's desk went from being helpful to rude for myself and other passengers who went up to get our keys redone. I stood behind one passenger that had a key problem as well as complaints about their toilet not working for the first 3 days of the cruise and they had to use public restrooms. The man wanted another room and the person at the Purser's desk told him "We can't change anyone's room just because they don't like their room". The mats in the gym were so worn out that people put pool towels on top of them to cover the worn spots. Since we cruise enough with Princess, we get to know their menu's for dining and it seems they don't change them. The menu's had the same thing each night starting with the first night to the last night that we've had for the last four years worth of cruising. Horizon Court isn't that great of an option. We feel the food there on this ship as well as other ships has gone downhill for some time. My wife even got a rancid muffin one morning in the Horizon Court! We don't go on cruises to eat hamburgers and pizza, but we choose to eat those items since at least they were consistent. The positives were the staff from the Lotus Spa were the best group we've ever had and the water we drank was great. Those two items don't negate the other negatives from this cruise. It's sad when you have to claim drinking water as being a highlight of your cruise. We always put a deposit down for our next cuise and we didn't this time. We just feel that Princess is starting to have too many issues beginning with maintenance like their parent company Carnival. We contacted Princess' customer service about all of the issues we had on this cruise and when the representative called me about everything he clearly didn't like hearing from someone who cruises a lot with them about all of the problems we experienced. His offer to us to make us happy was a $150.00 per person credit on our next cruise. Maybe Princess feels that is satisfactory. We felt it was insulting. I wasn't expecting a free cruise, but an offer of booking an inside cabin with a no charge upgrade to a balcony plus some dollar credit would have been acceptable. We've cruised a number of other lines and know what to expect from them. We'll take our dollars over them next time since Princess Lost Us! Read Less

This was a relatively late UK-advertised (guaranteed cabins only) and hence a late booking (2 months prior) for us and our friends. At no time were we advised, by our agent or Princess, that this was to be it’s first cruise after a two-week scheduled major refit in the Bahamas. It was to leave Fort Lauderdale 3rd April and after 14 N end up in Barcelona and in taking a more southerly heading than most transatlantic ‘repositioning cruises’ and thereby the prospect of better weather. A couple of weeks earlier Princess had issued a notification of a later embarkation time commencing at 14:00 in and that it had to be completed by 17:00! With flight transfers booked and hotels vacation times being well before noon most passengers, including ourselves, arrived earlier. Elite & Platinum captain circle members were seated in one terminal building and the remaining passengers in another. Boarding commenced at 14:20 but was so-slow. This seemed to be dictated / controlled by staff on-board ship undertaking the photo-ID scans – instead of the normal shore-side check-in desk-top webcams (very basic error). In the hour-long queue an American couple cited this cruise as being a ‘no-brainer’ to them as it was cheaper than a 7 night Caribbean cruise. Could it be that Princess anticipated there being some potential problems? Our lifeboat drill was held in the Theatre – where the customary Princess Procedure of scanning-in of attendees cruise cards; to ensure all passengers attendance; had been abandoned. Also advised not to bring with your life vests with you! Bathroom and furniture surfaces in our ‘guaranteed’ inside cabin, particularly the bathroom and wardrobe areas, were filthy. Before attempting unpacking our late-arriving cases my wife gave our steward the task of correcting the situation whilst we went for late Dinner. Unfortunately this ended up with my wife doing a deep clean herself. Being a 4 berth cabin we suspected that some fit-out contractors had likely previously occupied it and had given it some very ‘heavy-use’? That said, there is still no excuse for this serious failure on the part of housekeeping. Upper decks (16+) were akin to an on-going construction site – handrails covered in thick dust windows not cleaned, large rolls of deck ‘astro-turf’ type covering stored on-deck 16 for future laying, etc. Badly stained wooden treads to staircase linking the pool deck with Deck 16 with a fractured tread (no nosing) which was only repaired on Day10. After 40+ years in the construction industry I certainly do not expect to go on a vacation on a luxury cruise ship and be confronted with these sort of issues. Before departure even the Captain apologised over the PA for the state that the ship was in and it not being up to the normal Princess standard(s). He also advised that we would now have to take on ballast (water), ahead of their then being able to fill the pools – expected to take 2days. By way of an apology for the boarding fiasco he arranged for a complimentary glass of wine to be served to passengers over dinner (on day 2) or a ‘US’ beer if you preferred. However a soft drink would be chargeable! Some of the flooring contractors we spoke to at the bar on deck 16 told us there was a further 2 weeks work still to be done, mostly to be undertaken to passenger circulation areas during the night. One good-for-us feature arising from the refit became apparent as we departed from Fort Lauderdale when the ‘Love-Boat’ horns failed ‘big-style’ and had to revert to the traditional 3 blasts (for the duration of the cruise). After 34 nights on-board the Majestic Princess you can soon ‘over –dose’ on that melody! The new bed linen (mattresses?) was a welcome to the ‘very tired’ comments posted in earlier reviews for this ship. New LG large screen television rather oddly did not have numerical channel keys on the remote – just a single up/down button which proved to be a bit of a pain. Nor were they ‘smart-connected’ to the free movies / shows feature on the newer Princess ships. Day 2 - Princess Patter revealed that this ship’s management has a unique way of changing things to suit themselves and not their passengers or, as it later became evident, even their own crew members:- 1) To put back clocks forward at 11:00 AM (6 in total) was explained later in the cruise as having been thought –through ‘by a committee of Manager’s Minds’ to be better and a preferred option ie. in order to give to passengers ‘no loss’ of sleep. No thought was given that passengers would be losing daytime benefit, what most passengers come on cruises to experience. It had obviously not occurred to them that with their being no late show in the theatre either (see below) the bulk of passengers were in bed for 22:00, likewise that passengers can; by their own choosing; always decide to lie-in (as indeed they are well accustomed to when clocks alter at home)! Waiters and cabin stewards explained that ‘we now have less time to do the same amount of work, putting us under more pressure’. More realistically, I suspect that such a crazy decision may well have been driven by the fact that the flooring contractors would otherwise lose carpet-laying time during the night? For the first seven consecutive sea days we were unable to get internet in our cabin (first time ever). I frequently resorted to using a spare desk in the IT department where the Passenger Tech support / help desk was also scheduled daily for 9:00-12:00. Their passenger support was consequently cut short to 2 hours on those mornings! I found myself helping several passengers with their issues, wherever I could. Several times during the daytime the whole internet system went down for long periods, little surprise that half our internet allocation ended up unused. 2) No late show in the Theatre – just at 18:30 (explained as being for those late diners) and 20:30 (for early diners). The attraction of Freedom Dining would normally allow us to have Dinner at circa 20:00 followed by the theatre Show – considered as being the traditional / normal option - as indeed was only afforded to the ‘early diners’ on this cruise! This decision however had serious consequences on early dining passenger experiences (starting at 17:15 for those on fixed dining option) as already strongly vented in several reviews posted on Cruise Critic – taking up to 2+ hours! There were however queues forming for the now even ‘earlier’ 17:15 dining on this ship for the Davinci Restaurant at 17:00 that quickly extended to the International Café most evenings. Normally on Princess ships 18:00 is the early dining opening time. Just as they complained of experiencing poor / long table service we found the reverse. With the Da Vinci dining room no queues and were only circa 25% occupancy. Best described as akin to a ‘super/turbo -service’, being served in 60 – 75 minutes tops, even the waiters had time to socially converse with you, Even the maitre’d had time to converse with us every night and even asked if would like to choose any particular preferences, for something not on the menu, for the following evening (a first time ever). All too frequently, whilst the plates were hot the same could not be said of the food served was not, even when this need was expressed to them when ordering. Returning the food determines that it has to be replaced instead of merely micro-waving - as we were suggesting - as it would have helped mitigate any delays to other table-guests. To take in a show at 18:30, seemingly determined for us later diners by the so-called ‘on-board management committee’, was impractical to us and many more. In order to take-in the sail-away on port days we would have had to go in to a show in our deck-attire. Hence I only made it to two main shows. With there being no circa 22:00 theatre shows the only alternative venues for late evening entertainment were the Explorers & Fusion bars. Both of these are relatively small with inefficient seating layouts with many passengers standing. On Days 2 & 6 they put on ‘A Night at The Movies’ film on in the theatre starting at 22:00 but why they chose not do the same on other evenings seems a mystery. If this change were to be made across the Princess fleet it would prove to be a ‘red-line’ issue to ourselves, particularly with our having a 27 night port-intensive booking later in the year. On Day 2 I asked this same question of Guest Relations and was asked to fill in a form and handed - back to the same staff member. On Day 4 I asked at the desk as to why I had not received a response only to be told that it was not showing on their system as having been logged. If nothing else over the years, I have learned with Princess Guest Relations, to take a photo of any completed forms handed to them. This young lady duly re-typed it in to their system (so they could not lose it again?). It simply read “Evening Shows – Been told by Guest Services that 6:30 / 8:30 are to be every night – Please confirm and if so why no circa 22:00 show? If so is this now to be on all Princess Cruises? If so we have a 27N port-intensive cruise booked on Sapphire Princess later in the year and will be considering cancelling. NOTE – We dine at 20:00 and choose, as always, to take in the show afterwards.” Day 6 – Having heard nothing further I spoke to the same staff member as on Day 4 and enquired as to why I had still not received a response and was told that her boss was not at his desk and to try again later in the day. I was later advised by her that there being no late show and replacing with the 2 earlier ones, was indeed to be a change made “across the Fleet”. Because of the potential cost implications to ourselves were we to cancel, I requested her to re-ask the question of her ‘boss’ who advised her that he “will send an e-mail to the “Entertainments Director”. The ED later advised me of completely the opposite – that a decision regarding this had only been taken on-board this ship, for this cruise only. Again this was explained as being done “by a Committee of Departmental Managers”. Pretty obvious from this response that some serious Princess Staff Training – of their Senior Management - is urgently required! A lesson for Princess –If it works and is well-proven, please leave well alone! Disc –cutting of funnel steelwork + chiselling-out carpets in public areas (impeding fire-escape routes for carpet bowls) what sort of management expertise would determine a need to undertake these day-time operations on sea days – why not do on port-days? Again scant regard or thought was even given for the actual opinions of their fare-paying passengers! – See https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=qJvPc0HW_Iw Conspicuous by their absence were those crew members normally engaged in the cleaning of internal staircase handrails. Along with the lack of any Promenade deck cleaning the first week, these may have been in part due to crew being used in labouring for the flooring contractors? Tables and chairs in Horizon Court were very shabby, many stained and soiled-looking. On Day 3 - at 05:00 I was awakened by noise of forward thrusters beneath our cabin – in mid-Atlantic! At 09:00 the Captain came on the on the PA and explained that we had a passenger in need of off-ship medical attention as did a further passenger from a nearby Holland America vessel. It had been decided (by whom?) in the night to transfer their passenger to our ship. We were then on a heading for Bermuda where a further transfer of both passengers was to be made on to the Hamilton Pilot boat at 22:00. Passengers were later advised that both had since received successful medical treatment. Being much further North the weather and sea-state had deteriorated compared with on our original heading. A further call went out by the Captain seeking passenger blood group donations which proved successful. Day 8 Funchal Madeira - Our first port of call which we last visited in November . As we sat on deck 16 by the bar waiting the advertised sail-away party scheduled for 17:15 the Captain came on the PA at 18:00 and announced that divers were still in the water checking-on dry-dock engineering issues – and advised that it would now be depart between 20-21:00 - finally left at 22:00. The fact that there were relatively few passengers on deck at the time we later related as being due to many passengers being in for their much earlier dining time? Day 10 Gibraltar – Pouring with rain management had ad-libbed and announced that there would be an 11:30 screening of The Greatest Showman movie in the theatre. As it finished the weather had improved to allow us a couple of hours walk in to town. An internet connection was finally available in our cabin. The IT Manager explained that the upgraded system which included a new router, originally scheduled to have been concluded during the ‘dry-dock’ re-fit, had only then been fully operational. Day 11 Cartagena – First time visit for us was a port with ideal berthing so close to the town centre. Across from us was the 360M Euros High Tech Yacht built for a Russian Oligarch (impounded pending a claim of 10M Euros owed to builders! - https://metro.co.uk/2017/02/20/oligarchs-360million-superyacht-impounded-because-he-didnt-fully-pay-for-it-6461932/ Day 12 Palma – The current largest cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas (6,600 passengers), was berthed at the farthest point in the port - en-route from the Shipyard to the Med. Much longer transfers for their passengers, compared with the 50 – 60 minute pleasant walk we had to the Cathedral. Day 13 Barcelona – A slight delay to our arrival time for a full day + overnight stay. Having independently booked a guided tour for 11:00 for the La Sagrada Familia (18E each) we hopped a taxi from the port terminal for the four of us (28 Euros). This worked out at 25 E pp compared with the $75 ship tour cost. A locally -operated coach shuttle service frequently runs between the port terminal(s), taking you close to / from the Columbus monument, costing 3E each way. The ship charge for a shuttle coach was for $8 each way. Day 14 Barcelona – With a late afternoon flight departure we booked the Ship’s Barcelona tour which included dropping us and our baggage at the airport ($70 pp) and was supposed to last 3.5 hours and including 2-3 stops (Coach No.23). After a stop at ‘La Sagrada’ and their missing-out on the opportunity to do the intended stop at the Olympic Stadium (for Panoramic views over the city) and only 1.5 hours in to the tour, the guide announced we would then start the journey to the airport (20 mins away). After strong passenger exchanges they decided to return via the Placa d’Espanya, a heavily congested traffic route, and literally had to squeeze the coach in to the Museum coach-park. Given a max 10 minutes for photo-call overlooking the city. We would certainly not recommend this ship tour option. With the Captain’s Welcome speech on Day 3 making no reference to passenger nationality numbers it was apparent that there were not many of us from the UK / Europe. Later in the cruise, sight of the ship’s manifest revealed - Total passengers 2,892 (of 3,080 Capacity) - USA -2072 Canada-557 UK- only 91 The ship had however reported a full complement of passengers leaving nearly 200 empty or likely contractors still on-board? Lessons learned for the future – After 7 transatlantic crossings we would never consider Princess again for such a cruise – such stupidity and co-ordination failures on the part of management begs belief! Cost – Cutting Changes (across the Princess Fleet):- Abolition of Happy Hour(s)! (was previously a buy1 get 2nd for $1+15%) Wine Tasting – Of the 6 place-mat the No6 was always a Madeira sweet-style wine (originally in a collectable souvenir glass) and is now for a glass of chilled water! Champagne Hoop-La – It used to be a bottle each for the first 5 winners (could also be served chilled in restaurants) but was a single glass offering of ‘bubbly’ for each ‘winner’. Almost begrudgingly they had to open a second bottle! Canapes on Formal Nights (Elite perk) – The 3 each now reduced to 2 (had previously removed a chocolate - dipped strawberry offering). Chocolate on the pillow maybe next – who knows? Not long ago the Cruise Director was considered to being ‘one-down from the Captain’ in terms of hierarchy and standing bringing with them considerable entertainment experience. They were also solely responsible for all on-board entertainment including the selection of the guest artists. More recently with Princess and P&O sailings, and again on this ship, we now find younger recruits, best likened to being holiday camp entertainers; as is borne out by their CV’s; being given that same job-title. We find them to be rather immature and come across rather loud / brash. Ask them a question that they cannot or do not wish to answer and you are more likely to be told that they are now responsible to an Entertainments Director and that you may wish to take it up with them. (A reverse to any cost – cutting or do they come on a 2 for 1 salary package basis?). We found the normally entertaining and informative Wake Show to be cringingly embarrassing to watch and only worthy of turning to another channel. In the Marriage Match Game Show (a ‘Mr & Mrs type show), held in the Explorers Lounge, the ‘laddish’ style behaviour of the Cruise Director only served to promote some obscene ‘memorable moments’ responses from one particular couple. More akin to a Stag-night party and unworthy of this self-promoted premier branded cruise-line. Our experiences on this cruise only served to never pre-pay gratuities, as promoted by Princess and other cruise lines. In a recent e-mail the return voyage of the Crown, to Fort Lauderdale, from ‘Rome’ on 3rd November 18, was being marketed and has prompted me to post this review. It will be interesting to learn as to how Princess would propose to address some of the issues raised here – particularly their time-fixing for putting-back the clocks one hour on each of those 6 sea-days. Based upon assurances given by the Entertainments Director, we remain more optimistic for our next 2 cruises – both on the Sapphire Princess. Fortunately, since it arrived in the UK after it’s refit in Singapore it has been getting very positive reviews. Happy Future Cruising. Read Less

The passengers were told to wait in the terminal....except the terminal was FULL so they moved more people to a different terminal. We sat outside on a bench for 3 hours with no water or facilities. When we were permitted inside another wait. Got to our room and asked our room steward for a wedge for the head of the bed. He didn't know what we were talking about so he asked his housekeeping supervisor who also had no idea. We met the Hotel Manager, Carlo, at the Cruise Critic meet and greet and asked him for some help. finally got what we needed after the first night. At dinner, for an apology by the captain and offered a FREE wine or beer. I asked for a diet coke instead and was told there would be a charge for the diet coke. Remember beer and wine were FREE. Our assistant waiter was a disaster, our poor waiter needed to do both jobs. She couldn't carry the food from the kitchen to the dining room so the waiter carried 10 meals, she carried 3. The drinks were never refilled, the tables were not cleared. She just stood around. As an elite, we get free laundry. We put the laundry in 4 days before disembarkation in Barcelona. We hadn't got the closes back, so we were forced to go to the laundromat because we ran out of clean clothes. We screamed and hollered for our laundry to be returned so that we could pack. The WET laundry was returned at 9:30PM.....and we still had to pack. The best part of this cruise was disembarking...This is only a few of the problems we encountered Read Less

Banging above our room nightly and they never investigated the situation. We sat for 2 hrs before we could board ship worst boarding we ever experienced and we have been on many cruise lines. Princess created the wait. Relaxing at pool deck 17 and they started construction on kids pool before dry dock. Noise was so bad everyone came in. Customer service employees were very rude at counter when brought complaints to their attention. Anytime dining was a joke since you were told to wait 1 hr and we arrived when the doors opened at 5:30 and all tables were empty for 2 and 4 people so why were we waiting?? we had to switch to 1st seating dining. They kiosks were always down to check your acct. could never see our acct. do not have it on the room tv. Princess is not what its cracked up to be! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we took a 5 star cruise on Princess two years ago. This cruise was especially important, because destinations Bonaire & Curacao are where we spent our honeymoon diving, 20 years ago. NEGATIVES: A cruise ship is a floating hotel. This review is one star, because the mattresses on this ship are SHOT. We paid $3,200 for a suite. Look at the images of our bed, and you will agree that this 'hotel' deserves this one star rating. Regardless how 4-5 star other features on the ship are, if you are sleeping in a 'boat-shaped' bed, tossing and turning all night, back aching, knees aching, it is a ONE STAR experience! The ship is to go in dry dock in March, and all mattresses are set to be changed. That just made us angry! BEWARE, if you have booked Crown Princess between now & March, you will be sleeping on shot mattresses. The ONLY thing Princess can do, to satisfy us at this point, is to give us an anniversary RE-DO, because we deserve it! AGE DISCRIMINATION: My husband & I are avid divers. We booked Princess dive shore excursions on this trip to 'recreate' our 3 week honeymoon in Bonaire & Curacao. We carried 70 pounds of dive gear on this trip, everything we needed except for weights & tanks, for four planned dives, two in Aruba, and two in Bonaire. Princess description of the Bonaire dives stated age 15-70. My husband is a very fit 64 year old Orthopedic surgeon. 36 hours prior to our planned dives in Bonaire, we found a letter on our door stating that Mike's dive had been cancelled because "as stated on our paperwork, 60 is the cutoff age." SO not only was our dive cancelled, they blamed US! Throughout the trip, I checked on Princess' description of the Bonaire Certified Dive Excursion, and it STILL read 15-70! Princess stated that the dive partner's insurance is the reason our dives cancelled. We dive all over the world. I do not believe this is true. Never have I ever seen on any dive liability form, an age limit. Divers fill out a detailed medical questionnaire. That, and fitness to handle your heavy gear are used to determine whether you are fit to dive. Princess has partnered with an excursion that practices gross age discrimination in Bonaire. SIXTY is especially crazy! Really? I would suggest that Princess find a different excursion partner in Bonaire, and I would also suggest that an additional criteria for certified divers, is that they submit proof of DAN insurance, a divers insurance that any avid diver carries. We pre-paid beverages. There is a 15 drink limit, which was not disclosed, but we never came close to that anyway!! In our case, we would have been better off just paying our bar tab. Once we figured out that we would need about 7 drinks a day to break even, we realized that in our case, this was not a good deal! SALES hits: The first two hours on the ship, I believe SEVEN Princess employees hit us up for a wine tasting. Once or twice was fine, but this was highly annoying. I was ready to put a sicker on my forehead that stated "I am not interested in your wine tasting"! Overall, we felt bombarded by staff hitting us up for sales features. INTERNET GRIND: We purchased 100 minutes (110) for $69. The band width is WAY too narrow to accommodate the number of passengers using the internet. The only reason I accessed the internet was to check on my elderly father every couple of days. I needed the entire 110 minutes to accomplish that. The minutes begin when you "connect" but you are NOT connected at that time! It grinds, and grinds, and grinds. It took me 15-20 minutes to access FB and check on my dad, and send him a little note that we were safe, each time I did so. POSITIVES: The Ship: Aside from the mattresses, we were very pleased with this ship & its amenities. I would be rating this a 4 star. 'MUTS' (Movies Under The Stars) is fantastic! One night mid-ship, they had a fabulous 70's style disco night and incorporated Love Boat theme. SUPER FUN! The bar areas are great, we especially frequented the aft bar and greatly enjoyed it! The gym is incredible, with a large selection of equipment, and all cardio-type machines are high and up front, providing majestic views of the sea. The ship has enough pool/bar areas that we never felt crowded. STAFF was just wonderful. From the front desk, to the excursion crew, to bar tenders, wait staff, our main dining staff. Just incredible. 5 Star all the way. Our cabin attendant was SUPERB. Her name is Maria, and we wanted to bring her home! She did her best to resolve the mattress issue, but the images below are AFTER her efforts! NOT Maria's fault. Aruba Certified Diving Excursion was AMAZING. We weren't taken to the beautiful, fragile reefs, and we did not expect to be. Having observed the lack of buoyancy control by many of the other ship divers, I understand fully why! BUT, they took us to two shipwrecks and both were VERY interesting and teeming with life. We actually saw THE biggest Green Moray we have ever seen on the second dive. It was at least 8' long, and just behind it's head top to bottom was two FEET thick! We also saw an octopus on that dive, a rarity in the daytime. I plan to review the operator separately from this. Big KUDO's! Once our dive trip in Bonaire was canceled, we did not book another excursion through the ship. We easily hailed a cab and took the scenic route past the salt flats & flamingos to Jibe City, a world famous windsurfing destination. We sat with our feet in the water drinking a beer, and had a fabulous time. All 3 ports were nice. Bonaire had the best shopping for gifts, really classy, not so much typical "souvenir" items. Port vendors in Aruba & Curacao will warn you that you won't find much in Bonaire. DON'T believe them! Read Less

To see the Yucatan ruins and to get away for a few days in luxury. If you read my reviews, you know that I generally only post positive experiences. This voyage of the Crown Princess from Ft. Lauderdale to the Yucatan for 5 days leaving November 13 has not been one of those. The standards for Princess have dropped since our cruise to Alaska in 2010 in so many ways and this has been an extreme disappointment. We have cruised on Holland, Windstar, Princess, and Carnival in the past and chose Princess this time because of our Alaska experience. The Dining Room, Da Vinci, especially for breakfast has been poor. The coffee and tea have either been stale or very watery, the omelet came out overdone and dry to where I could not eat it. My husband’s ham steak (per the menu description) was an 1/8 inch slice of ham curled in a ball. The buffets are overcrowded with no available seating. We pre-booked from home and paid for the Crown Grill where my husband’s well done request for a filet mignon to be butterflied came out black and burned through. The replacement was bloody in the middle to where he could not eat it. If you are on an early shore excursion you cannot make a reservation for anytime dining as you must call in specified hours, 8-5, and he recording says they will try to accommodate you if you come to the Dining Room in a disdainful tone. We got back 5 minutes late. And we found the shows overcrowded and impossible to get into because of people saving seats in rows for large parties and the cruise line made no accommodation as the seating is inadequate for the population of the ship. Our shore excursion to the ruins was advertised as 2 hours each way; it is actually 2 and ¾ hours there to one set of ruins and 2 and ¼ hours back from the second one with 2 hours and ¼ total at the ruins. The weather was beautiful, no road delays; this was an obvious misrepresentation. Signs of cost cutting and deteriorating service are everywhere in this environment and they are not subtle. Got this for free through a casino promo. What a waste of my time. If I had a dollar for every person of the staff who said "you can't smoke here" or "you can't sit here", I'd be rich! The ship needs updating, was too crowded, disorganized, and actually pretty boring. I'm not into drinking or jogging around and there was nothing to do. Waited in endless lines at International Cafe. They canceled the main port, Turks and Caicos, and they actually thought that tendering to their private island (Princess Caye) in the Bahamas was a good idea! I didn't get off the boat because I don't like sitting on beaches. The previous cruise was infected with Norovirus, so they had to 'sanitize' the ship before we arrived. We couldn't get on the boat until 2pm and into our cabin until 3pm. I flew in early in the morning to be sure that I'd be there on time and all I did was sit around. No food or entertainment in their stupid "waiting room" at the pier. Never again. Read Less

We hated celebrity cruise experience that year so we only use Princess for over 16 cruises now. We chose this cruise because of the ports visited . The embarkation process was the best this time . As soon as we got into our Balcony cabin on 14th floor, we wanted to get out because we noticed stains in the toilet and some leak between the tiles in the bathroom floor from the grout. We told the steward at once . Next morning we both had severe back pain-being 75 & 79 year old- because of sagging bed. We told that to our steward too. We used to get very efficient hardworking steward except in the celebrity cruise(who was not even changing sheet everyday), but this time we were not lucky in Princess in this matter too. Of course ships started getting bigger and getting more passengers -good for bottom line- but service had become less . Last two cruises in Ruby Princess and in Royal princess we were spoiled by their friendliness , and service with smile . As we expected after seeing the conditions , there was "norvo virus " infection in this cruise. First time after taking so many memorable cruises we were counting the days to get out of this ship. Usually we used to feel sad towards the end of cruise. There was not enough help in the Horizon buffet once the self service was discontinued due to Infectious diarrhea-which was a good attempt to control the spread of infection. My wife having cruised with Princess many times and myself four years ago I was disappointed to find how much things seem to have slipped in the meantime. Boarding did not proceed by decks as indicated in precruise material. As a result my wife and I found ourselves having to wait for over 90 minutes to be processed. we had gone to some trouble to arrive at the time requested by Princess. Having got onboard we found our stateroom keys were not working and had to stand in a long line to get that fixed. Princess had failed to give my wife her Platinum status. She had to spend quite some time getting this fixed only to find that this had not been done properly causing more problems in getting her internet entitlement. Anytime dining was a disaster. Long queues and harassed maitre d's. We finally managed to get changed to traditional dining after two requests to that effect were ignored. The Princess accounting system requires major overhaul. To reverse an erroneous charge is not a matter of passing a credit. The system reverses an earlier correct debit thus creating two erroneous entries. I must have spent at least two hours dealing with problems of this kind. The passenger service personnel have language and competency problems. Their instinctive reaction to a concern seemed to be defensive. Princess can do no wrong. Usually the problem had to be referred to someone else. Often there was no follow up and I had to go back, stand in line and explain everything again to a different person. One night we were woken twice in the night by a faulty PA system which rang bells loudly. We reported this. No one got in touch to explain let alone apologise. It took three requests before a plumber came to fix a faulty tap. The Crown Princess is in need of major refitting and that is not confined to the tired fabric and fittings. Our balcony floor was covered by paint spots and there were major rust areas that clearly had not been attended to for ages. A number of seats in the theatre were broken. The only bright spots were a good quality cabin and excellent service and cuisine in Sabatinis. The whole experience can be summed up by the notice we received on our last evening. Having spent a considerable time and effort getting my wife recognised as Platinum status, which you get after a number of cruises, the final note congratulated her on completing her first voyage with Princess!! It was not her first, of course, but it will almost certainly be her last. Read Less

We chose Crown Princess because we had experienced such a good cruise on Sea Princess 9 years ago. The itinerary was identical and we thought it would be nice to visit the same ports but different excursions. As a treat, we upgraded to a mini suite as we wanted a bath - what a rip off that was - it was nothing but a larger cabin with a balcony. The bath was disgusting and had a yellow 'tide' rim inside of it. The toilet had black like soot/ granules every time it was flushed. We were on cabin deck 9 and we experienced the most awful sewage smell every day - it made you gag every time you went pass the culprit area. We reported it constantly to no avail - the ship clearly has a problem as I have since read many reviews where passengers thought it was a smelly ship. We have cruised many times in 9 years having had 13 ocean cruises and 1 riverboat cruise and not once did we ever experience eating off of plastic plates, drinking a beverage from plastic cups or wine/beer from plastic glasses in a buffet restaurant. We did on this one!!! The food choices was certainly not great and nor was the food ever hot so to be given a cold plastic plate to put luke warm greasy food on is beyond belief!!! There was no trays at all, so it became a juggling act with plates and cups. Entertainment???? Mmmmmmmm, if you like art auctions then you will be in seventh heaven. We experienced 3 in our 1 week cruise. 2 of them were held in the Explorers bar and it became very annoying when you are trying to read or just want to be quiet - one went on for about 3.5 hours. You might think why didn't we move to another area - well, it was hard to find another quiet area that was attended by bar staff. A glass of wine was absolutely silly money - 8 dollars for a 175ml glass which at the time was equivalent to £6.45! Prior to this cruise we had 2 further cruises booked - one was on Sapphire Princess Sept 2018 and the other was on Arcadia (P&O) May 2018. When we returned, we cancelled these 2 cruises as they are both owned by Carnival - what ever Carnival touches, it turns into a holiday camp at sea. Standards have certainly dropped - it seems they are just out to fleece you any way possible - excursions, special restaurants add on cost etc etc. We went with Celebrity Cruises last year and it was faultless so we have booked with them again for next year. We chose this cruise line because 9 years ago we had a lovely cruise on Sea Princess to the same ports we were visiting on this one. OMG how Princess Cruises have gone downhill. Crown Princess had the most awful sewage smell on our cabin deck (deck 9) that was quite putrid and it was also smelt on the Promenade deck (deck 7). We reported it numerous times to no avail - in fact the smell worsened as the week went on. There was clearly a problem because on disembarking in Southampton, a working boat pulled alongside the ship with pumping equipment. In the 14 cruises that we have done, we have never ever had to serve our buffet restaurant food onto cold PLASTIC plates, nor have we ever had wine with the meal in plastic glasses! Tea and coffee was in plastic mugs and no teaspoons whatsoever - you had to stir your beverage with wooden sticks! We thought we were at a children's tea party! The food was warm at best and greasy - there was no presentation. Entertainment????? Mmmmmmmm if you like art auctions, then this is for you - we had 3 in a week which had a duration of 3 to 4 hours. You couldn't escape them as 2 of them were in the 'Explorers Bar' where we used to like to sit for a quiet drink and read. There was no guest speaker apart from Edwina Currie of all people - no idea what she may have had to say. We upgraded to a Mini Suite as I actually fancied using a bath as opposed to showering (we only have a shower at home). The bath was unusable as it had a horrible yellow tide line round it. The shower curtain was filthy. The mattress was very lumpy and needed replacing and the sheets and towels were never replaced in the week. How the cabin was classed as a Mini Suite I do not know as it was no different to a balcony cabin on other cruise lines. On our return home, we have written to complain and we have received a reply back - the reply was a lengthy 2 page waffle but not aimed at our complaint but to another passengers complaint who had been on board ROYAL PRINCESS. Just highlights the incompetency of the cruise line! We will stick to Celebrity Cruises in future and if anything goes downhill with them, we will hang our passports up and go UK cruising!!!! This cruise was something we had planned and looked forward too for the last 6 months, however it fell short of our expectations from day one. We had to queue to board the ship for 2 hours, we had to queue to leave the ship for at least 1 hour on more than one occasion. The ship was overbooked and overcrowded , with people reporting being offered money not to attend this cruise. We had to queue to get seats for coffee and in every bar on the ship. We had to queue to get seats in the restaurant most evenings. We had to queue to get sun beds and we were only successful on one occasion. The food was of a poor standard with small portions and often cold after waiting so long. Three restaurants had the same menu with little choice. The ship was tired and shabby. We are dismayed at the amount of money this cruise cost and feel it was a complete waste of our money . Poor service and lack of facilities , substandard food. We will not travel with Princess cruises again and will not recommend them to family and friends Read Less

The "bathroom" doesn't have a bath - just a small shower and the whole room is tiny. Food was OK but nothing special, limited in selection and tended to be the same each mealtime. Some of the entertainment was first class - but it was very much a mixed bag as some was just boring. Cabin had marks & stains on the walls which should have been addressed. Enrichment activities could have been better chosen for a wider audience though Mike Gatting was quite entertaining. Shame he was only on the once. Ship overcrowded; advertised as 3080 Passengers, they squeezed over 3500 on; too many kids running around and far too few pool loungers available. We have been cruising for a dozen or so years now and on various cruise lines. We chose this cruise for several reasons. It was a Princess cruise which we had not yet done and it allowed us to spend a few days in London before the cruise. The big attraction was it having a chance to visit Norway and the Norwegian Fjords. While the scenery was amazing and had no issues with the cruise itinerary or the ports we visited the ship experience was a huge disappointment. I describe it to friends this way. I believe the company has tried to cut costs by reducing staffing levels so low it now seriously affects the entire experience. While the service we did receive from individual staff members was good the quantity and quality of service was poor at best. The crew appeared to be working very hard, looked very tired, frustrated, were constantly rushing around and on a few occasions we witnessed arguments, some very loud and vocal. There were line-ups everywhere. I even took pictures of the line-ups at the buffets because I couldn’t believe how long they were. This, I believe, was due partly to the fact that they kept most of the buffet restaurants closed except for a very brief period at the peak of meal times. The food in trays was often empty or only a few morsels left to be picked over, until someone ran by and literally threw more into it. Many, many times the food labels did not match what was in the trays. This being more evidence to the lack of quality control we witnessed throughout this ship. Every single day beverage stations in the buffet area had “please use other station” signs on them. There were constantly dirty dishes piled up all over the place finding a clean table a challenge with guests often removing the dished themselves. Between finding a seat or a beverage we did a lot of unnecessary, and frustrating, walking around at meal time. The closing of the other buffet sections made it very, very, difficult to find a place to sit (other than as a cost saving device, I can think of no other reason to do such a stupid thing especially when people are lined up out the doors). We had purchased a premium coffee package to enjoy on the trip. Once/if we could finally catch a server to order one, the wait was incredibly long. Most times we had completely finished our meals and had to stay and wait for the coffee to finally show up. On several occasions, we simply chose to leave and not wait. At night, they featured their “Movies under the stars”. Here again, there was plenty of evidence of a complete lack of quality control. One day there had been a light rain in the very early evening. When we got to the movie, all the chairs were soaking wet. No one had come by to flip them over to drain them or wipe them down. (Something we saw done on every other cruise line we have travelled with.) On two nights, the volume was so low it was difficult to hear. Had any crew member been assigned to check on the movie venue, they would have notice that immediately or at least we could have mentioned it to them. All in all, this cruise line was a disappointment! As mentioned earlier I believe there has been a significant cut in staffing levels to appoint that they can no longer supply a minimum level of expected service. We have sailed many times in the past and on several different cruise lines, this by far was the worse. I can see by reading other reviews we are not alone in our evaluation of this ship. How sad. Very friendly hard working staff, let down by a company who seemed not to care about the condition of the ship. There was an obvious problem with the drainage system, and there were constant aromas of sewage in various areas of the ship. If you have a full ship paying Princess prices there are millions of Pounds / Dollars that can be used to get some engineers in and fix the problem. No, they prefer to bank the money and let the passengers suffer the smells and possibly risk their health. We have cruised Princess before, and the restaurants and food did not come close to previous experience. This ship is in desperate need of upgrading, and perhaps they shouldn't be charging inflated Princess prices until it is sorted. Shame on you Princess, you will not see us again. One last comment, we used CPS parking at Southampton which cost £92 for the week. The service was not cheap, but it was an exceptionally easy and quick process. Read Less

Over the past few years we have been cruising our way up the Norwegian coast with various cruise lines, the itinerary deciding which cruise to take. However, this year's preferred cruise was fully booked so the next option was Crown Princess, oh what a mistake we should have taken this year out. Embarkation at Southampton was chaotic with a total lack of interest from ship's staff on boarding the ship. There were very long queues for the Michaelangelo dining room with some guests allowed to book tables but others denied. The very strange menus were basically the same day in day out with only sauces or method of cooking varying. The Horizon buffet was a free for all with vegetables presented first before you found out what meat or fish (if at all) might be available. On a number of occasions the "food" presented was inedible. Very often the coffee was Grey in colour and the Tea was putrid. Sadly none of the Horizon staff (or management) were interested in resolving any concerns. The Port and Shore excursions were average with one excursion from Gravdal being cancelled apparently "due to lack of interest" 5 days before it was due to take place which was very strange as a number of other guests had been told that that particular excursion was overbooked! Overall, not impressed at all but what did surprise me was how many other guests, many of whom had obviously cruised with Princess for many years, expressed similar concerns to ourselves. My first princess cruise and my last. will stick with royal caribbean in the future. i knew there would be a cash bar at our cruise critic meet & mingle for 65 cruise critic members but i expected snacks as i have had with other cruise lines. our snacks consisted of a bowl of unsalted peanuts. my room was another story. phone cord was frayed down to worn wires. the lamp was bent in half and not working. The carped had spots and smears on it and the bedskirt was disgustingly stained. i pre ordered robes. i expected them to be in our room when we arrived. did not receive them until the second day. i preordered internet service and was supposed to receive 20 extra minutes. this was not the case. even though i called the princess customer service to confirm my requests for robes, internet, etc and all was confirmed.
