To start, they greet you on board with a drink, you must pay for, and offers to sell you wine, water, non-alcoholic drink packages, that are so over-priced and over the top. Food was rarely good with little imagination and choices. Paid extra for Pinnacle restaurant and the entrée was terrific but appetizers and desserts were poor. Coffee and Cappuccino were little more than colored water. Returning from excursions at 3:30pm found the buffet, 24 hours open they say, 3/4 closed off with nothing but left over sandwiches, cold pizza and pastries to eat. Reserved dinners were only 5:15 and 7:45. Although the dining rooms were not full between, the any time eaters could not make a reservation for a table. Like Outback, you got a beeper to hold, until a table was ready for you. The staff invites you to get together's, bingo, wine tasting, liquor tasting...all for an exorbitant price. It was a ship to just say no. Read Less

We Had an amazing week on the Maasdam. We were hesitant to book this because of other reviews saying the ship was old and needed to be fixed but so happy we did. Yes it is an older ship but if you know that then you can expect what comes with an older ship. The Staff was great, especially room, restaurant and bar staff. We met so many wonderful people, had some great shore excursions and the food was great (just skip the lido for dinner that was lousy). The lido was perfect for breakfast and lunch- so many choices. Dinner at the pinnacle grill was amazing and the wines were wonderful. Entertainment was fair but we always had something to do. We played games, puzzles, trivia servers times a day, movies, bingo, pool. The ports we visited were great as well and great variety of shore trips to choose from. I wish I could have stayed another week. Read Less

We chose the Maasdam for the great itinerary which sailed the St. Lawrence River from Montreal, so nearly all of the sailing was scenic and in very calm waters. We loved Montreal, Quebec City, PEI, Nova Scotia and Bar Harbour. Weather was simply gorgeous the whole 7 days. With two ports of call in Nova Scotia we saw beautiful Canadian islands and seascapes. The Maasdam is an older ship so it might not be a good choice if you are looking for the features of a new mega ship . Limited selection of dining, though all of the food was great and served by friendly staff. There is afternoon tea service and you have a choice of the traditional early or late dining seatings in the Rotterdam Dining Room (which also has 'freestyle' dining times if you prefer). The waitstaff in all of the dining areas was top notch and highly professional. Our favorite bartender Mr. Voltaire knew exactly how we liked our Gin&Tonics; he's a world class barman! There are few balcony cabins and the cabins lack new TVs and a mini fridge but we got by just fine without them. While the ship feels old in so many ways, the fantastic crew made our cruise on of the best we've ever experienced. From our efficient cabin steward to the Captain, every single crew member we met was superb. Read Less

This was our 4th HAL cruise (plus several on other lines). We signed on for this cruise while in Alaska a year ago, enjoying that a lot and wanting to do this itinerary. We stayed one night at the Epik Hotel in Montreal, just a block from the terminal for easy walking access. It took just 45 minutes to walk from the hotel door, get thru registration and into our cabin. The Maasdam is smaller than most other ships but the size was good. It's due for dry dock and some upgrading very soon. My main hope is that they'll brighten the dim corridors, and maybe put casters on the heavy DR chairs. We found the food to be wonderful, staying in the main dining room for all dinners. Navigating around the buffet areas of the Lido (or whatever called) is always a bit crazy on every ship and no better here--people moving every which way in small spaces. We enjoyed the entertainment. Singers and dancers did a great job. I especially enjoyed the comedian, very laid back but really funny without getting risque. The primary activities we engaged in were trivia and America's Test Kitchen classes--both perfect for us. We didn't do any ship excursions. Instead we did the HOHO bus in Quebec; Duncan's van tours in Charlottetown PEI (excellent van for 6); walked around in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Aberdeen Tours in Halifax (outstanding and affordable small bus for 24); and Lulu's Lobster Boat in Bar Harbor (fun and educational 2-hr diversion). Service--wonderful. I tried unsuccessfully to bring my DR waiters and cabin stewards home with me. Read Less

This ship is in need of huge repairs! I traveled from Montreal to Boston! The ports were good but the accommodation was terrible Room 1- Black soot was coming out of our a/c unit and falling on the furniture! It was dirty and disgusting! The crew tried to correct it but said it couldn't be done while the ship was sailing! Room 2- we were switched to another room! This room had a balcony which they decided to paint while on board! Th smell was awful and the paint chips were all over the floor of the patio! They finally cleaned it only to find out that the next day the same thing occurred Another factor about this ship! The entertainment was amateurish at best! The women sang off key and the activities director had no excitement to her . However the solo singer in the lounge was excellent! We would miss the shows and only listen to her ! Dining was adequate! The service was good, staff was attentive but the food was mediocre! The lido had a clam bake! The lobster was minuscule and the clams and mussels were tiny! The special dining room was not worth the price either! The good and service was good but their up charges were not worth going to! They credited us $200 l! However I didn't want the credit I wanted and paid for a pleasant experience with clean accommodations . The front office was polite but kept saying this is what corporate has requested us to have done! I have travelled onHolland before but this is the final straw! As I said it is a health hazard and a danger to one's health!! Please listen and DoNot travel on this ship! Read Less

My family, four women, chose this cruise for it's itinerary and the date. Most of us live in the Sunbelt and wanted to get out of the heat. I have been recently cruising with Celebrity and have been at the suite level with Luminae Dining. I was expecting the food to be mediocre and the crowd to be staid. However, we were all pleasantly surprised. I will address some of the bad things first. The Maasdam is an older ship which will be retired August of 2018. Although the public areas of the ship are nicely decorated and spotlessly clean, the outside of the ship can only be described as a rust bucket. The color scheme down the stateroom halls is tired. Instead of art lining the staircases, there are plaques given by governmental agencies referencing the Maasdam. Parts of our stateroom were repaired badly. My main complaint about the ship is the lack of outdoor eating and drinking venues. We really enjoy having a cocktail while sitting outside. Maasdam lacks this. In addition, there is not a jogging track. There is a promenade on deck 6 but it specifically states "no running." In addition, when we tried to walk it in the morning, the crew usually had part of it blocked off for some sort of drill or maintenance. Now for the good. The ship is spotless. The crew is fabulous. Most of the crew is from Indonesia. You do not see the Eastern Europeans or other nationalities like you usually do on a ship. I believe the homogeneous quality of the crew lends itself to a unique experience for the guests. They have your name memorized within five minutes of meeting you. I'd love to have that ability! Room stewards and dining room staff were amazing. Food. Except for the Lido at lunch, I thought the food was consistently better than Celebrity even at Luminae. None of us had a bad course at dinner. We ate at the specialty restaurants, Le Cirque, Canaletto and Pinnacle. All were excellent. I would highly recommend Le Cirque. It is only offered once per cruise and was really good. Lido lunch seemed limited to me. I always look forward to the Asian selections on Celebrity and these selections were not nearly as good in quality or offerings. Breakfast buffet and dining room were good. Drinks were reasonably priced and there are daily offerings where you can get drinks for a reduced rate. I would not do a beverage package. The wine selections were limited and, unlike Celebrity, if your glass of wine is more that what is allowed by your beverage package, you pay the whole amount of the glass not just the difference. Some in our party were disappointed by the limited wine selection. Entertainment was very good. Nightly shows that were not the regular ship entertainment (magician, comedian) were excellent. Smaller groups in other venues were good as well. The Band which played a Crow's Nest wasn't great, however, Adagio, Ocean Quartet and the piano bar made up for that. Ports of call were very interesting and pretty. We had gorgeous weather, high 70s. The time at Bar Harbor was limited. We did the Acadia Park tour and that was excellent. In Halifax we ended up with a private driver for the day after Hertz seemed to be overwhelmed. We waited forty minutes to check in for our reserved rental car and were still third in line. I'm glad we gave up on driving ourselves. Halifax is a big city and even getting out of town seemed like it might be a challenge. At Sydney, we did the Alexander Graham Bell Tour through Holland and it was very good. In Charlottetown, we saw the play Anne and Gilbert and really enjoyed it. Be aware, however, that it is not the original Anne of Green Gables play. In Quebec City, we just took the shuttle and walked around. Beautiful city. Some of the sail-aways were very exciting. In Boston, the ship hovered off-shore from the runway of Logan Airport. Planes that were landing seemed almost to touch the ship. It reminded me of Maho Beach in Sint Maarten. Other sail-aways went under bridges that were very impressive. The other passengers seemed to be mainly American or Canadian. Some Aussies. Not too many Europeans. It was a younger crowd than I have experienced on other ships mainly caused by multi-generational family groups. More children than on Celebrity but the ship is not overrun with children. Overall, very enjoyable. Read Less

This trip met all our expectations. Embarkation was quick and easy we boarded ahead of schedule. Disembarkation was equally as easy. Took a transfer from port to airport - wise idea. Ship is older but in great shape. Well maintained and nicely decorated. Beautiful sitting areas. Smaller ship with not middle stair case. Tricky getting around. Cabin was great. had no hot water for 24 hrs but... fixed and no more problems. Dining was awesome in all areas. Wait staff above and beyond in all areas. Service as always with HAL was superb. I've read some complaints about cut backs but in my opinion the level of service is as amazing as always. HAL is not known for fun and games and that's why I pick them. Did not use HAL for excurshions but loved all the ports Not sure why we stopped in Sydney but the rest was great. Use Halifax taxi - Les was wonderful We did the HippoBus in PEI great hour tour and cheap. Read Less

Embarkation in Boston was seamless. Great staff to greet and direct you. Got on the ship less than an hour after our arrival at the dock. Room was ready and our luggage arrived very quickly. Large Oceanview cabin was clean and the air conditioning worked like a charm. Lots of room to store items and the bed was super comfortable. A mini fridge would have been a welcome addition as milk was only readily available during the breakfast hours and obtaining one right before bed was often difficult. Our room steward Dede and his assistant were wonderful. Food was ok - not the best I have had on a cruise. The fish and seafood was outstanding but the beef left much to be desired in my opinion - I think Canadians as a general rule are much more picky when it comes to beef. Veggies were varied and delicious. Entertainment - the onboard performers in the main showroom I thought were pretty cheesy, excluding the beautiful classical duet. They, however, were pretty much relegated to a small alcove located in a fairly major hallway where every few minutes the air conditioning restarted with an extremely distracting bang. The duet was amazing. Far and away the best offering on the ship for entertainment. The none-staff performers brought in on specific evenings were very good. The comedian was hilarious and the two celtic sisters (Maggie and Cassie McDonald) were fantastic! If you are lucky enough to have these two on your cruise do yourself a favour and see what true authentic Cape Breton musicians can do. The Indonesian staff show was awesome. It was wonderful to see how proud these people are of their culture. Extremely entertaining. Did the Peggy's Cove and Titanic Cemetery excursion in Halifax. Tour guide was very very good. Lots of interesting facts and information along the way. I know many reviewers of this itinerary have slammed Sydney. What they all need to keep in mind is that Sydney is a city whose economy was based on the coal mining, steel and fishing industries - two of which are now dead. Please consider what the impact on this community, as a result of these closures, could be. We were lucky to have our friends from a neighbouring community come pick us up at the port for the day and spend it enjoying an authentic lobster feast and beach glass search - Sydney was our favourite stop. I suggest booking an excursion at this stop. Enjoy the simple self-guided walk about beautiful historic Quebec City and the drive along the gorgeous coast on PE Island were AMAZING. The walk about in town of Bar Harbour was OK if you are into touristy junk shops. Talking to fellow passengers, that took the excursion to Acadia National Park sounds, indicate it is likely the best use of time at that stop. The trips under the bridges were exciting. Go to the top decks to get the full effect. Captain's voice made me laugh every time I heard it - he just may be the voice of Ikea commercials! I found Stone the cruise director to sound snooty and insincere at times - however her assistant that ran the nightly music trivia in the Crow's Nest was much friendlier and approachable. They should promote him! Read Less

Overall the trip was wonderful, but there were some larger scale issues we encountered that certainly did not ruin the trip, but caused some discomfort (this will be at the end of the con section) Pros: All of the employees we interacted with were friendly, respectful, and very efficient at their job. The food for the most part was very good. Having dinner in the Rotterdam dining room was definitely the right choice, although the Lido buffet was not bad either. They had an excellent selection of vegetarian and gluten free options as well. We travelled with 3 children under 3 years old and were always very well taken care of by the wait staff. The price of the drinks was actually very reasonable, so don't waste your money on a drink package unless you plan on having 7 plus drinks per day per person! Cons: Drinks were good, but could have been a little bit stronger. About 2 days into the trip, the 9th floor (Verandah) rooms began "flooding". Essentially, the piping from the dishwasher from the buffet restaurant had clogged and the dirty dishwasher water was being re-routed accidentally to the bathrooms on our floor...lettuce etc. Luckily, our room was just barely out of the extreme splash zone and we only suffered with lettuce water bubbling up in our sink and tub. Other rooms had to be evacuated due to true flooding in the entirety of their rooms. The staff was very attentive to cleaning the bathrooms which was nice. However, once the problem had been "fixed", the bubbling into the tub and sink happened a few more times and to many other rooms on our floor. Our party was compensated with onboard credits for this issue and we were met with good customer service, but this shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. Do routine cleaning of the piping please! This was gross! Take away message - wonderful wait staff, comfortable beds, never too crowded at any bar, plenty of fun activities to do on the ship, however.... beware if you plan on taking a bath...... Read Less

I chose this cruise because it was the only one that went to Quebec City and Montreal. It exceeded my expectations with regard to service, food, and especially entertainment. Shows were varied and exceptional. I would recommend this cruise to anyone. Only negative was the spa tried to upsell you on every little thing. The spa didn't list the 55 minute massage, only more expensive ones. Entertainment was exceptional every night. Food was over the top. Steaks always tender. Service great. Our first Holland America cruise, but we would recommend. Sidney was not a great port of call. Quebec City was very nice. Charlottetown was also nice. I did not book any of the ship excursions but did my own. Overall, this was a great cruise with great entertainment and food! Embarkation was easy. Disembarkation was trickier as they had luggage tags of lime and green that were too similar in color. Read Less
