The trip covered the areas that I wished to see and was recommended by friends .previous experience with Viking had bee very positive. The cruise combined culture of the people, amazing architecture and knowledgeable guides who added to the enjoyment of the trip. I enjoyed the musical and cultural events in particular the Ballet. In future I would explore the embarkation city , One of the draw backs was the traffic in Moscow which added many unproductive hours to the day which would have been better served by visiting the sites , is there not a way to moor closer to the center of town? I particularly enjoyed the time in Saint Petersburg ; the the extended tour of The Hermitage should be the included tourThe least enjoyable part was the time spent in Mandrogy. The service onboard was exceptional in all ways and i definitely would book to do another tour with Viking. Read Less

While we have done several ocean cruises this was our first river cruise and our first experience with Viking. We were on board the Viking Truvor. Viking downplays the ships they use in Russia in comparison to their European cruises. After spending 14 days on the ship we do not understand why they do this. While maybe not as modern as some more recent additions to the fleet, Truvor was immaculate, superbly maintained, very comfortable and had an outstanding crew. We had a veranda cabin on deck 4. Cabin was well laid out and very usable. Everything worked the way it is supposed to. Our cabin attendant kept the cabin immaculate. Food is of course subjective. We mostly did the continental breakfast in the Panorama Lounge looking out over the bow of the ship. Good light breakfast selection which was what we were looking for. Two very nice Russian young ladies took good care of us. We also did lunch here most days. Dinners in the main dining room, which is large enough to seat all passengers were mostly very good, a few were excellent and a couple were just OK. Overall the food was better than what we had on our last ocean cruise with Celebrity. Many Russian specialties were offered, including a theme dinner and a buffet on the sun deck one afternoon while we were on the waterways. These were all really good and well worth trying. The chef was very visible and friendly. The maître d – Roland was far and away the best maître d we have every encountered. He actually worked the dining room helping the staff and chatting with guests. Overall we would rate the food as very good and have no complaints. A general note on the staff. Everyone on the ship from the folks maintaining our rooms, the 3 on board Tour Directors, the Hotel Manager, and the Filipino and Russian staff in the dining room and lounges was superb. Friendly, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to travel with. The presentations from the on board Tour Directors covering Russian history up to today were very well done and informative even for someone who is a Russian history buff. Tours from the ship were all very interesting and worthwhile. Local guides spoke excellent English and were very knowledgeable. Viking offers a number of optional for a fee tours on this voyage and we took advantage of many since this was a one time trip for us. Moscow was fascinating particularly traveling on their subway and we especially enjoyed the evening folk instrument concert. The stops at the smaller towns on the way to St Petersburg were all very different and informative. We found the home visit and the wood stave churches on Kizhi Island to be the outstanding highlights – but all stops were very good. St Petersburg is totally different from Moscow. Seeing the Peterhof, the Peter and Paul Fortress and Catherine’s Palace and attending a ballet performance were highlights. Overall this trip rates way up there with our favorites and we would highly recommend for anyone interested in the history, culture and sights of Russia. Traveling with Viking on this trip was a real pleasure. A few things to be aware of: The Moscow airport (DME) is at least a two and a half hour and up to a four hour drive from the ship. Moscow traffic is incredible (fifth worst in the world) so it takes up to 1.5 hours to go from the ship to the center of Moscow and back. Some days we made this trip 3 times which is a lot of wasted time. Viking should consider options for folks to stay in Moscow for lunch rather than always going back to the ship. While we expected it in St Petersburg, the large amount of tourist activity in Moscow was a surprise to us. The Peterhof and Catherine’s Palace in St Petersburg are must do activities. We were disappointed by the tour of the Hermitage, very crowded and very rushed. Do not assume that in Moscow and St Petersburg that the “in depth” walking tours cover the same highlights as the bus based tours. In St Petersburg we had signed up for the walking tour not realizing that it did not go to the Peter and Paul Fortress which we wanted to see. Easy enough to swap but we would not have known this if we had not asked one of the local guides. Read Less

We knew we wouldn't go to Russia on our own, our usual travel plan. This cruise was ideal, we saw two major Russian cities and a few little villages. We were on board for every night, so no daily packing challenges. AND the Viking folks really know how to spoil you for any other travel. The meals were delightful with new companions several days. The entertainment was special. Our cabin was always sparkling clean and neat. Excursions were well planned and organized so that 145+ people enjoyed each port and shore visit and didn't have the sense that there were "crowds" - not even once! I can't say enough good about the crew and staffing. Our guides were well-informed and genuine. The crew was friendly and never overbearing. Yes, we would definitely love to do another cruise similar to this one. It was so relaxing and informative. Such a pleasure to travel with Viking. Read Less

The architecture and places we were escorted to. The food on the ship along with the whole layout of the dining arrangements. The knowledgable guides who not only escorted us and had an incredible knowledge of all aspects of Russia but gave lectures (talks) on the history of Russia. The entertainment delivered on the ship by the most experienced and caring hotel staff. The cleanliness and the care of the cabin by the cleaning staff was brilliant. All of the above plus more made this holiday one of the best we have taken. I could not recommend it highly enough. Although this holiday was not cheap, it was worth every penny we spent. Saw some amazing places and met some lovely people from all over the world. Will definitely be going on another Viking cruise soon. Read Less

I thought the Waterway of the Tsars cruise was excellent! Everything was done to make passengers feel comfortable and we had so many interesting experiences I am still in awe thinking about it. I also enjoyed talking to the tour guides and other people who worked on the ship, which I felt gave me more of an idea of what life is really like in Russia. Of course this cruise was just a brief overview, and life on a daily basis is much different from a short ship adventure, but I was impressed at the intelligence of the guides, the quality of the food, the service, and the helpfulness of most everyone on board. It must be a bit like herding cats to deal with such a large group of people, and I thought that every attempt was made to make it a great experience. You could opt for whatever extras you wanted, or just opt to hang out on the ship and do as you pleased. Several people on this cruise especially impressed me. These included Kathrin, the Program Director, Alexei Kostukov, one of the guides, and another guide, Misha Ryabokorov. I didn't get to talk to the third guide as much, Andrej, but he was also very helpful. I also enjoyed two of the wait staff and thought they were very helpful, a young woman from Siberia named Anastasia, and a man from the Phillipines, Rommel. I am still in a state of shock at how wonderful the culture of Russia is and how different and yet the same life there seems to life here. I only knew of Russia from books, movies and music, and seeing and experiencing it in person gave me more of a sense of the place as it really is. Read Less

We are seasoned travelers and have been all over the world on land, sea and river tours. Without a doubt, the Russian River Tour was at the top of our experiences. The activities, tours, guides and lectures were excellent. The guides and lecturers were very well informed and answered all our questions, openly. Everything was very organized from airport greeting to airport farewell. Our suite on the Truvor was roomy and well appointed. We loved the towel elephant our room attendant made. We especially loved the twin sinks in the bathroom. Unfortunately, we felt that the food was not excellent. We were served lamb and poultry that was severely under cooked. For the most part the food was good. We enjoyed the Swan Lake ballet, folk dancing and folk instrument concert. Our flights to and from our destination were very good. We highly recommend this tour. The service on board was excellent. Our room was quickly made up each morning and the evening "turn down" was great. The ship had an elevator but it was at the back of the ship near the dining room. Anyone with a mobility problem would have difficulty with the steep stairs. Read Less

Everything about our Russian River Cruise was beyond enjoyable. The ship, Viking Truvor, was lovely and immaculate, the staff friendly, accommodating, personable, and so efficient. Our cabin was designed well and we had room to spare when all our things were put away. The bed and pillows were so, so comfortable that we slept like babies every night. We've traveled a lot internationally and thought we couldn't be "surprised" by things we'd see in Russia. We knew things would be impressive, but there are no words to explain the degree of beauty in the palaces, churches, and museums. It just took our breath away. Viking arranged wonderful tours and provided very interesting on-boat presentations. We came home with our heads spinning from how lovely are Moscow and St. Petersburg. And I can't forget to praise the leisurely cruise between the two cities on the Volga and the interesting stops along the way. All in all, we would rate this river cruise as one of our most wonderful vacations, and we will certainly be traveling again with Viking! We have NO complaints. Read Less

This was our second Viking river cruise. We did the Danube river a year ago. The Moscow to St. Petersburg was absolutely wonderful. The country was beautiful, the Russian people were wonderful, and the excursions well done. The service crew was fantastic and the service was exceptional, mostly Russian and Filipino and very friendly. The food was truly outstanding in every respect. There were two other couples with us and they agreed too that the cruise was exceptional. One of the men is a frequent world traveler and he said that it was the best trip of all that he has made over the years. Evelyn the hotel director was exceptional and truly went out of her way to make sure that all of the guests were satisfied. My wife and I truly had no complaints about the trip. Russia was the last place that my wife wanted to go in the world but she turned around 180 degrees very quickly. Our perception of Russia really has changed a lot. We found the people to be delightful, friendly, and they love Americans. They are very proud of their country and its culture and history. You should not miss the Russia river cruise. Read Less

This was my second Viking River Cruise and my Husband's first. We were greeted at the train from Helsinki and driven to our ship. We were welcomed on Viking Truvor with pleasure and directed to our cabin where everything was "shipshape". Our luggage was delivered promptly. St. Petersburg was splendid and exceeded our expectations. Our Guide, Misha, was excellent throughout the entire cruise. The local guides were excellent as well and all spoke English very well. The service aboard the ship was excellent. Everyone of the staff went out of their way to introduce themselves and remember our names from then on through the remainder of the cruise. Not only did they remember our names but the type of tea I drank as an example. The cities/ towns and villages we visited on our way to Moscow were unique. Having tea in a private home and visiting a school were some of the unique experiences we enjoyed. Loved all the art museums,as well as the palaces which were lavish and the churches as well. The onboard lectures, tours of the ship were very informative and great fun, thoroughly enjoyable. Moscow was more beautiful than I expected. The Kremlin, in Moscow was amazing and St Basils was spectacular. The only disappointment in the entire cruise was the tour of the Jewish Museum which was scheduled on a Jewish Holiday and they were closing early. We were given a very superficial tour the staff there obviously finding us an inconvenience. Our local guide was embarrassed and very apologetic. Overall an excellent and comprehensive cruise. We would recommend it! Read Less

This was my aunt's cruise and I was accompanying her to help her as she is elderly. I was pleasantly surprised with the help we received although we were very self sufficient. The advice that we received regarding where we were able to go with her walker was excellant and they accomodated us where possible. Viking cruises was very helpful with information prior to the trip and we were not dissapointed when we arrived. The crew was very friendly and the program director was very organized and everything was on time. The shore excursions were excellent, well thought out, and very informative. I wish we could have taken in all of the optional excursions but there were too many to fit in and we had to have some rest time! Dining was excellent, we always had a choice of local offerings, but if you wanted to stick to the basics, they were on the menu as well. The only downfall of the Russian cruise is that we were not docked within easy access of the cities. We were well out of town and had to do the shore excursions. It limited our freedom, but since the shore excursions were great, it was not a deal breaker. The entertainment on ship was not top class and therefore we didn't go into the lounge at night. I loved the Panorama bar during the day as it gave us the opportunity to sit in an area that had the perfect view of the landscape while sailing while you played cards, downloaded your pictures on your computer, or enjoyed a leisurely drink. I also liked the Russian language lessons and the lectures about the history and culture and also the meetings in the evening before then next day's excursions. It really brought the whole experience together. I met a lot of wonderful people and would definitely recommend Viking Cruises to anyone who is interested in a river cruise. Read Less

This cruise was the top of my bucket list and it did not disappoint. This is a great way to see Russia if you are not young and too adventurous. This was 2nd Viking cruise (first was Danube). We got a "cannot turn down deal" of $3900 including free air! We had actually been planning to go next year, but when we were offered this rate, we grabbed it. Started in St. Petersburg: only complaint, the tour of Peterhof Castle was an optional one and we didn't do our homework. We didn't choose it and missed the best thing in St. Petersburg! This tour should be included. St. Petersburg has so much to offer. It is a beautiful European city. Next stop: Mandrogy is a made-up "Disney" stop. It's a little village of craftsmen. It was interesting, but not my favorite stop. The other 4 stops before Moscow were ALL very interesting and worthwhile: 2 were Unesco sites. If you don't like icons, this tour might not be for you. We saw a lot of them. Moscow was very interesting. Very clean with lots of new construction. Modern buildings going up everywhere. Take advantage of all the museum tours. My favorite was the Kremlin Armory where the state treasures (including crown jewels are kept. The boat was very nice. The food was fabulous. The staff was amazing. The 3 Russian guides were excellent: friendly, knowledgable, wonderful senses of humor. One consideration: be prepared to do a lot of small tipping for bus drivers and local guides (100 to 200 rubles). Book now! Read Less

This is my 5th Viking cruise and I must say that it was the best in every aspect. the service was unbelievable with a marvelous group of very friendly and helpful employees. Wilhem, the hotel manager, was a marvelous host at all times. He gave each and everyone of us personal service and attention throughout the journey. The tours were all very good with excellent guides everywhere we went. The food was outstanding also. The entertainment was quite good in the sky lounge. I consider the best of all of the shows was the folklore show in Moscow. Fantastic. The worst was the Cosaks dancers and singers in St. Petersburg. The set up of the stage and seating was terrible. The color, décor and sound was dreadful. I hate to say this, but I don't think that this event room was not a good idea. My suggestion to Viking is that the ship should be docked closer to town. It was a long trip everytime we went to town on tour because of the heavy traffic and we were advised by the locals not to go out at night in that area of town. There is no where to walk around or eat nearby. Read Less

Some didn't hesitate to go out of his/her way to provide service beyond the expected or to share information that made the trip so interesting. The ports of call were very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of the region and hearing first hand descriptions of life during the Soviet era. The on-board lectures were well organized and informative. My greatest reward was touring the many churches and palaces and viewing the art and architecture. My only disappointment was the modern/interpretive dance ballet on the first night. I was expecting to see a traditional, classical ballet. But I will not judge my entire experience on that one night. The planned excursions were very interesting and organized very well. We took advantage of the additional river cruises in both St Petersburg and Moscow, additional ways to enjoy the city. We enjoyed the discussion groups about Russian history. As we have come to expect the food was very good and the addition of Russian dishes gave us new experiences. We were first-time river cruisers and had such a good time that we already have booked another one. We like the more intimate feeling of a longship, especially the open seating at meals. Informative lectures helped us understand more about Russia, and the articles in the daily paper let us know more about the things we were seeing. The tour leaders are exceptionally trained and were able to answer any question from the group. Viking is well organized for on- and off-boat routines, tour bus numbers and groups, and keeping things moving. Do pay attention to the codes for levels of walking in the itinerary if you have any problems (knees, hips), and ask the tour director or guide before setting off about the distances and restroom availability (one on our bus was on water pills). Staff hands out bottles of water every time you leave the boat for a tour. Excellent! Do not miss the home visit in Uglich; it was the best stop on the trip. Wonderful homemade vodka, brown bread and dill pickles, followed by apple cake and tea, then a visit to their backyard to see a huge garden with nary a weed in it. The food was exceptional with many choices at every meal. Big buffet for breakfast with hot and cold choices. Buffet including salads, and a printed menu for lunch. Printed menu with many choices for dinner. Most nights there was a Russian specialty among the dinner choices. Also, we enjoyed the Russian dumpling class and the tea session with a samovar and platefuls of pastries. My husband liked the trip as the dress is casual. No suit, no tie. Yes, some people had a jacket for the welcome and farewell dinners, but most men were in khakis or slacks with a collared shirt or sweater. Women wore pantsuits, skirts, a few sparkly blouses, but no cocktail or formal dresses. Read Less

From the very start the holiday was wonderful. The coach journey from the airport to the Viking Truvor was comfortable and restful. The cheerful greeting as we boarded was more than expected and we were efficiently shown to our cabins. These were excellent; spacious, clean and well appointed. The dining room was lovely and we especially liked the tables for two by the windows. The dining room and kitchen staff did a wonderful job for the whole two weeks and the food was very good, including all the local delicacies which were served daily. Shore excursions were informative and visually stunning on most occasions as the museums and palaces were some of the finest we had ever seen. Cruising the rivers and lakes of Russia was fascinating and the sheer number and variants of onion domes was mind boggling. The evening entertainment was relaxing which was pleasant after the day's exertions, the lounges both being spacious and comfortable. Moscow came as a great climax to the whole cruise, a beautiful city with lots to see and enjoy. The most amazing thing about the cruise, though, was the Viking Truvor staff, who could not do enough for everyone from start to finish of the trip. The Hotel Manager, The Cruise Director, The Captain and The Maitre'D were so so helpful at all times and the rest of the crew backed them up superbly. Our tour guide, for the whole cruise (Victoria) was extremely experienced and just a wonderful representative of her country!!! Our dining area staff were wonderful!! We had Vera and Natashya and they would help us with any questions on selections, which were all excellent!!! We always did the quiet upper deck small breakfast which had fruit, yogurt, rolls, muesli, juices, coffee/tea, etc. Dinners usually started at 7pm unless tours arrived late back at the ship. All menu items were delicious! We had a balcony room which was really great for cruising the Volga, etc!!! It may have been slightly smaller than we are used to on Celebrity, but they had so many amenities to compensate that we did not feel the difference!!! The bed was great and the features in the bathroom were excellent. All lectures were on the TV so you would not miss any information. We were taken care of from arrival to departure!!! All tours were very informative and professional!!!! I cannot say enough on this subject!!!! This cruise seems expensive, but it is worth every dollar/euro!!!! August last year, perhaps a little late in the season but our fault we chose it. The first couple of days are spent in Moscow, one of those places that not so many years ago was almost impossible to go to. We had a fantastic time, ably assisted by our very knowledgeable Russian Guide Victoria. She seemed to know everything and used her skills as a guide along with her amazing grasp of the English language and the English sense of humour. The cruise took in some wonderful palaces at which we stopped for a tour and some free time. Uglitch, Kizi Island and it amazing wooden church and several other places. Our destination was St Petersburg, without a doubt the Jewel in the Crown. So much to see and so little time as the saying goes. The Hermitage, Peterhoff Palace, the list could be endless but you must do your own homework. As I said at the beginning August is a little cold but snuggled under a warm (provided) blanket drinking coffee under the ever moving stars was just priceless, (oh and the Vodka Tasting evening is good fun as well). Warren and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Russia in July 2014. So much so, in fact, that we put together a booklet containing historical facts, our insights, and pictures of the sites we visited for our friends and relatives. We have heard back from many of them about how they would like to take a cruise with Viking too. We were helped every step of the way, from obtaining our visas to arranging for our airline tickets. We were met by our tour guides at the airport after we had arrived in Moscow, and were assisted by them when it came time to leave. The tours were educational as well as well planned. We not only learned about the history of the places we visited, but gained an appreciation of the culture of the Russian people. The accommodations exceeded our expectations.. The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The food, however, was good enough for royalty!!! Our tour guides not only knew their stuff, they had a sense of humor. That makes touring a real pleasure. We loved our trip so much, we are already planning our next one. Read Less

My husband and I are both retired, and enjoy traveling frequently. The ship we were on this time, the Truvor, was an older type river ship, but was in excellent condition and appeared recently refurbished. Our room, with a veranda, had enough room to be comfortable. We sat out on the veranda often to watch passing villages, towns and sunsets. Viking offered lectures about the country every day. The lecturers were Russian who spoke well and were easily understood. We learned about the places we were to see and visit, but also about the history and political aspects of different historical eras. It was all fascinating and well presented. We also had two classes to help us understand how to speak Russian. I spent a lot of time sounding out signs in the cyrillic alphabet that is used. On many occasions, the words I sounded out turned out to be English words we shared! We were well taken care of onboard - as is usual on Viking cruises, we seldom had to actually ask for help, it was always there with a smile. On shore excursions, we were accompanied by at least one Russian guide from the ship, and a local Russian guide to help us learn and understand about all the local history. Our guide through the Hermitage was especially adept. The beautiful museums, churches, architecture, cities, villages, and countryside were amazing - and much of it was so different from expectations. The Russian people were friendly and slightly curious about us also, since tourists are still a new thing there. We liked to go shopping in the local businesses, and many tours were able to give us free time to visit the shops on our own. Many people took advantage of this as it gives a chance to see what the local shops are like away from the 'tourist' places. There actually aren't very many 'touristy' places yet, which is very refreshing since what you see and purchase is different in each place you visit. On this trip, we did not 'eat out' very often since Viking provided Russian cuisine onboard, and sent a packed lunch when our tours took us past the lunch hour.As for embarkation and disembarkation - these times always involve a little waiting for buses to the airport, but Viking handles it all very well and with as little standing in line as possible ( in our experience) and the buses are always first class. We have our next Viking cruise already planned - the Viking Star cruise in the Mediterrean, and we can hardly wait! Read Less

This was a most enjoyable, educational, engaging and yet relaxing cruise. The amazing staff attended to absolutely every want, whim and need..... And always with a smile. The on board guides were particularly effective advocates for their country and never seemed to tire of queries about customs, history or political conditions. While the opulence of the palaces and the grandeur of the churches were most awesome and worthy of extreme photo taking, our highlight were the visits to the homes in the communailka and small village. The hosts were proud to share their life experiences, vodka and treats with us. We plied them with questions, and they did not flinch to give honest responses. The cuisine onboard never failed to tempt, and the servers were attentive and personable. On my return, I made pelmeni for Russian friends with the recipe acquired at the session with the chef. They were impressed and said it tasted just like their mother's pelmeni. A gem of a vacation. Most memorable. Viking excelled on all accounts. We'll be back for more. I most strongly recommend the Viking experience. The booking process is excellent, staff being friendly and most helpful, everything is taken care of from the minute you leave home to the time you get back. Both the Viking Pride and the Truvor were well appointed, comfortable, friendly and efficiently run, truly a "home from home".I was impressed by the attention to detail which all helps to make the experience a memorable one.Facilities on board were very good and seemed to cater for all requirements.Of course a major highlight was the restaurant, nicely set out, freedom as to choice of seating,so important in the making of new friends, and the standard of cuisine excellent!Even my Granddaughter who is normally quite fussy, thoroughly enjoyed her food, particularly the buffet breakfasts,as did I. The inclusive excursions and the optional ones were interesting and well organised, guides were helpful and imparted their local knowledge well. The on-board information was very good both concerning each day's events and keeping passengers up to date with news from home and abroard. I thoroughly enjoyed both of my trips with you and will join you again, hopefully in the not too distant future. Read Less
