This was my first cruise, so in many ways I didn't know what to expect. Everything was pleasant from the time we were dropped off at the cruise terminal until the moment we caught a cab back home.
Understandably, there were about a squintillion people all trying to board the ship, but I thought every official point of contact was professional and efficient and the process was very ...
This was our first time cruising with HAL. We were told this was a better cruise line than Princess and Carnival. This ship itself is somewhat old, the Westerdam is in need of an overhaul or replacement.. We are used to newer and cleaner ships.
Our dinner waitperson was not great, he was not friendly, and kept forgetting what we ordered. We were a table of six and several of us had times where we ...
As usually independent travelers who develop our own itinerary, make lodging reservations, locate by choice and chance our meal experience, the cruise was a bit heart pounding in the planning of the unknown.
All in all we traveled a few miles short of 5,000 miles did not buy gas, have wear and tear on the car/rent a car, had excellent meals at least 3 times a day, a nice room, live entertainment ...
My husband and I are long time cruisers and had already been to Cabo. So we just wanted to cruise and didn't really care about the destinations. We also knew in advance that the passengers would be age 50+. We were alright with that because we are also 50+, but..... the ages of the passengers were more like 65+. There were lots of wheelchairs, canes, and walkers. At first it felt like being in a ...
After sailing on Royal Caribbean and Princess several times, we wanted something different and the Westerdam had the itinerary that we wanted.
The ship is nice. Some area's a bit dated but overall acceptable. We had a suite which was large, but nothing more special than more room and a large balcony.
We chose anytime dining which will probably be the last time. The service was slow and waiters ...
Is the Westerdam the best "Dam" ship in Holland America's fleet? Read on for a very detailed log / review of the 15 night sailing leaving San Diego on 10-10-14. Skip way down to the conclusion if you only want the wrap up summary.
Westerdam Panama Canal cruise 10-10-14
We traveled to San Diego on Wednesday evening, October 8 on Southwest. Flying went as well as can be expected and we arrived ...
Don't know where to start. We are both 4 star mariners with HAL. I write this as I am still sick with food eaten on cruise and bad air conditioning room giving me a bad cold and to top off that I got the flue.. The food was terrible. Steak was tuff. Almost broke a tooth. The tenderloin was like a piece of cardboard. The lido food is like elementary school buffet. The dining room was no better. We ...
My wife and I did the 12 day cruise from Vancouver to San Diego then to the Mexican Riviera and back to San Diego. It was broken down into 2 distinct sailings, which I didn't realize was the case when I booked it. I should have known, but didn't. The first 5 days was great with the exception of the first sea day which was rainy. But with HAL, there is much to do and interesting people to meet, so ...
We had a wonderful Alaskan experience on the Westerdam. I was concerned about the weather the first full week in September, but the weather was near perfect. Seattle, Victoria, Juneau, Glacier Bay, and even Sitka were sunny days. Ketchikan was cloudy, but no rain. The mountain reflections in Glacier Bay were near perfect.
I was concerned about the food and dining. The menus were a little ...
Our first time to Alaska, second cruise with Holland America's Westerdam. This remains a quality cruise line, and we have enjoyed it both times. On this trip we found the entertainment in the showroom to be "OK" but lacking in variety, although technically extraordinary - LED video screens create fabulous sets. The food was plentiful and good, but we felt they were trying too hard to be "elegant" ...
