Introduction: We are frequent cruisers with Platinum Plus status on NCL and Black Card status on MSC. NCL was our go to company for N.A.cruises and MSC was our go to company for everywhere else in the world. Unfortunately, both companies have adopted strategies of bigger and bigger ships and more fees beyond the cruise fare. After our last cruise on the 5,700 passenger MSC Meravigilia, we decided bigger is not necessarily better. This led to our selection of a smaller ship with a new company for us: Holland America's Oosterdam to Alaska. Cabin: We selected a Neptune cabin, because we were travelling as a family of four. The cabin is spacious with a king bed, sofa bed for two and large balcony. The cabin had a large screen 55" T.V. and a bathroom with an independent shower and independent shower/tub combo. Overall a very nice cabin, and the balcony is excellent for Alaska sightseeing. Dining: We dined at the Pinnacle Grill for breakfast, the Lido market for lunch and the MDR for dinner. All meals were excellent, and better than similar offerings in NCL and MSC's buffet and MDR. Embarkation: Embarking was smooth. We arrived at 11 a.m. and walked on the ship after check-in. Disembarkation was a bit more crowded, but we were off the ship in about twenty minutes. Entertainment: We saw the comedian Tim Kaminsky twice. Very funny shows. We also went to the dance company show. Fairly typical dance fare. We missed the magician because dinner ran late one night. Overall, Kaminsky was the star of the show. Fitness Center: I used the fitness center several times. A bit smaller than the larger ships, but had similar amenities to those ships. The center was crowded in the early a.m., but wide open in the p.m. Onboard Experience: The onboard experience was where you notice the difference between big and small ships. It was much easier to get around the ship, elevators, dining room, etc. No waves of people even after shows. Definitely easier to move around the ship compared to the 4,000 to 6,000 passenger mega ships Service: Service was excellent. Our room steward figured out early in the cruise when we went to breakfast and dinner. The room was made up and turned down during those times. The ship, although older, is in excellent shape and the crew keeps it spotless. Shore Excursions: We did our own excursions. Easy to do in Alaska. We drove to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. We took the Raptor/Bear shuttle in Sitka. We walked the Downtown area in Ketchikan which was mostly a shopping stop. Value for money: Holland's price for a Neptune suite was 50% less than a similar NCL Haven suite. NCL continues to raise it fares. Value for money is hands down in favor of Holland. Read Less

17 of us took this cruise together to celebrate my brother's 50th. While I have traveled (and even lived) all over the world and I love to travel, I had never been on a cruise and was a little nervous. I LOVED it! It was so much fun! I was in a balcony cabin (smallest one) and it was perfect for me and with one other person at times. I was the only one in my room, but thought it was very roomy and well appointed and had I had someone else there I think it would have been fine. The food was plentiful and fine. Not overly gourmet, but it was good and fresh and met my needs (the point of the cruise was not the food!). There was always something available - they made that very easy. Service everywhere was outstanding! I unfortunately didn't keep track of people's names - something you should do apparently for these reviews. But I didn't have a bad moment once! Embarking and disembarking were quick and easy! No lines ever (except upon return for customs but that is not related to the cruise line). Luggage was handled well and no issues. What I liked were the loads of lounges and places to hang out. As I said we had a large group but we were rarely all together. I like to go and read so there were fun places to do that or hang with a few people. The entertainment and various activities were fun and plentiful so never lacked for something to do even with 2 days totally at sea. Here are some specific things to keep in mind (including my only negatives): 1. It annoys me to no end that they charge for sodas! I did get a soda card for $25 ahead of time that was worth $50 and that helped. I also brought bottles of soda in my carry on (which is allowed) and put those in my fridge. Soda is cheaper than juice (which was available for free at breakfast) and I think they should have free self-serve soda fountains periodically throughout the ship. 2. The info they send (know before you go) is helpful except they don't well explain the app. Before you get on the ship DOWNLOAD the app and tell anyone in your party to do the same! It's then very easy to use the chat feature with your party within the app and avoid texting charges. We didn't understand all of this and 17 people had 17 different phone carriers and plans so some were afraid to text, turn on their phone, etc. With the app, you have the ability to check the schedule, chat with each other, even check that day's dinner menus while keeping your phone in airplane mode! But it's not clear how it works and took us a lot of playing around (and ultimately not everyone in our group used it). I have since gotten my phone bill and had zero extra charges. 3. My cabin's bathroom had some chips/marks in it that I mistook for dirt at first but then realized it was minimal damage. I am fine with that and the cabin was kept VERY clean and don't expect the cruise line to fix every chip - just be warned, there may be minimal damage but look closely as it's not dirt! 4. This ship holds I think about 2000 people but it didn't feel that large. My good friend and I were on opposite ends of the ship and we could get to each other's rooms with an easy 5 minute walk. But do plan to walk a lot and use stairs whenever possible on the ship. I thought it was very easy to get around, very well marked with signage, and people were super helpful on the few times I got confused. 5. I did do some shore excursions which I really enjoyed. Most were with Holland America but did do one outside of them and all were good with no problems. Overall I loved it and plan to cruise in the future (even took advantage of paying a deposit for a future cruise to get some cruise credit). Loved Holland America and recommend this ship, their crew, and their service! Read Less

Friends had planned their vacation and invited us along...We would go again in a heart beat. Our room was clean, we were catered to, there was plenty of food and so many choices. The staff made us feel catered to. Our cabin person PuTu was awesome!!! He brought us what ever we needed, answered our questions and kept us informed. PuTu was funny, sweet and so very accommodating. His customer services skills are golden! *We were invited on the cruise by our friends Norm and Teri, we invited my husbands brother and sister~in~law Richard and Paulette. We all had a blast! *Shore excursions we absolutely loved and had so much fun on the ConTiki. *The mini hummers were fun and educating our guide 'Johnny Depp' was fun and knowledgeable. *We went on an unplanned excursion in a young man who had a comfortable van asked us along and his prices were AWESOME! I wish I could remember his name, you wouldn't believe how much he knew. This person made us feel as if we'd been friends forever. *On our last stop we had pre-ordered a 'half shell?' with two lounge chairs. We couldn't find any available ones and the people we were instructed to look for, for guidance were no where to be seen. We just gave up and ended up not getting one because it felt like we were wasting our beach time looking for help. *(Just a thought, maybe those who pre-order get a ticket say "lounge shell #1" and tag the shells with numbers. when we get to the destination or somewhere along the way the tickets are given to the purchasers so they may just go to the preassigned shells. AND the 'half shells' are set up prior to our arrival...(I heard from some that they had to wait for someone to set things up when they got there, and they too had to follow behind a line of people and LOOK for available seats.) But the positive experiences far overweight the beach chair experience and we absolutely would love to go on another cruise. Thank you to all who made our first experience so very AWESOME! Read Less

This was out first cruise so we were not sure what to expect. We had heard from our friends that Holland America was a very elegant and relaxing cruise line... and they were right! We loved having a relaxing atmosphere. The staff around the ship was extremely friendly and polite. Our stateroom stewards would greet us by name, even when they saw us out and about on the ship! They always asked how our day was going and if there was anything they could help us with. Everything across the ship was sparkling clean, the food was amazing and a nice selection of entertainment. We preferred to go to the later evening shows, because the earlier shows filled up quite quickly. This ship definitely has a classic feel to it, and it appeared to cater towards an 'older' crowd, although all age groups were present. My husband utilized the spa services and raved about his experience. We recommend spending the little extra to get a balcony room- ours provided spectacular views and was a nice place to take a nap or enjoy a few quiet moments. We would definitely book another cruise with Holland America Read Less

We have done 16 cruises on Princess and Holland. The Oosterdam cruise from March 16-30th was wonderful. Not for the ports(had been there many times) but for the happy and smiling crew, good food, excellent service and well maintained ship. We loved it all! We always sail in March to celebrate our Anniversary and get away to warm and sunny weather. We always book a Signature Suite. Our room stewards were outstanding.Their smiles and happy greetings always made our day. The day of our anniversary we woke to no HOT WATER! They called the plumber right away. Due to the nature of the problem no hot water until later that night. We cancelled our anniversary dinner in the Pinnacle Grill and decided to just grab a bite in the Lido and wait for a shower. Stuff happens. Just was a bad day. later that night, our server " Ronnie" up at the Sea View Bar by the pool surprised us by setting a table w/ cloth, flowers, candles etc. to dine under the stars. We were so surprised and thrilled. It was the best anniversary dinner ever. Many of our new cruise friends came and shared our celebration. This was incredible service turning a sad situation into an incredible evening. Turns out we are happy the plumbing broke!!!! The entire ship staff were incredible and made our entire 2 week experience a very happy one. Read Less

We really enjoyed the thermal spa and fitness center, Lincoln Center, B.B. King, back outside deck on Lido Deck, and Promenade decks. The Main dining room was beautiful and service was great. The Cafe was also wonderful. We were able to get specialty coffees there.. Excursions were well priced and we loved the trip we took to Trunk Ba on St. John. Service everywhere was impeccable. Cabin Stewards were very attentive and helpful. Our Signature Suite (6105) was incredibly roomy and very comfortable. We loved the huge balcony, whirlpool tub and great selection of in-room movies. This is definitely a quieter ship which was great for us. We loved Holland America and will very likely choose this line when we cruise again Ports: We went snorkeling and on a tram in Turks and Caicos. Both were great. We loved the private island. Our cabin Butler, Carlo, was great. He was very attentive. We had some issues with high winds and had to skip our first port. So we had an extra day at sea which made the cabana even more worthwhile. We enjoyed dinner at Pinnacle Grill twice and Canaletto once. Our cabin was 7038 and in a great spot. One thing we did discover is they changed the explorations cafe. It’s not like the pictures. It’s much smaller and part of the crows nest bar now. So if you’re expecting a “coffee shop” it’s not. But the coffee was great. Definitely will sail on HAL again. This was my 6th cruise on Holland America. I am completely satisfied. I drove from Sarasota to Ft. Lauderdale and parked in the garage across from the terminal ($105.00) for the week. Embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth, best in all my visits. I splurged and got a Neptune Suite. It was located in the aft of the ship, and had the most wonderful wrap-around balcony (Suite 5091) Huge. The suite was very comfortable and clean. My steward (Andy) was so kind and helpful. I tipped him at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the cruise and he was so grateful. (just a suggestion). I was with a group of retired gentlemen and we had the most wonderful time. Holland America made rooms available for us, in which to hold our meetings. Although on a ship with many people, it's hard to please everyone. Most of the meals in the dining room were good. Some hits and missed (prime rib - terrible, Surf & Turf wonderful). The dining room stewards were very attentive and helpful with suggestions as what to order. (tip them as well - please) Most mornings I had breakfast in my room, preferring to lounge in my bathroom and slippers. The breakfast was always served as ordered at the exact time. Occasionally I would go to the Lido, but too much hustle and bustle for me. Large selection of food items though. I did not attend any of the entertainment. The only thing I was disappointed in was Exec Tours. I took 3 tours, and way too much time was spent in souvenir and gifts shops and less on actual tours. In the future, I will book tours separately. Holland America seems to have gone out of their way to please customers. All the staff were very helpful with smiling faces and kindness. It has much improved from past years. This was one of the most enjoyable cruises that I have ever taken. Would like to go to Cuba next year, if only the prices for the Neptune Suite weren't so high on that particular cruise. Read Less

I loved the ship and the staff. Shore excursions was another thing. Terrible and scary drivers (not in the Dominican Republic.] Very rude staff at Magen's Beach. We felt rushed everywhere we went except for Dom. Rep. Next time I will read reviews of other options rather than an overpriced excursion. The wait staff on the ship were the nicest and most polite people I have ever met.I felt like a queen in the dining room. It was disappointing that the outside pool stayed closed due to filtering problems. The cabin was nice, albeit quite narrow in places. I slept better than I do at home, possibly from the gentle swaying of the ship. The food was very nice and tasted good but it is an international cuisine. Many of us had to ask what food was called and what was in it! Omelet and crepe stations were great with no long lines.( We did not eat at:normal times.) I am so used to a predominance of Italian food where I live (Rochester, New York) that I had to adjust to none onboard. What? No garlic bread? I also do not eat red meat, lamb, veal and fish so sometimes my choices were limited. The Dutch desserts were wonderful, not too sweet. I absolutely loved this ship and would go back in a heartbeat. Classy, elegant decor and geared to the older crowd. Also, this was a 7 day cruise. Read Less

Embarkation was smooth, with a ship this size I don't think long lines at check-in is as much of a problem. Ship condition was great, with the room feeling fairly standard (other than a full bathtub and a little more space in the bathroom than on Princess/Celebrity). Service was great throughout the ship. MDR food was excellent, with lunch and dinner buffet routinely rotating so as to feature new items. Main theater dancers and singers were top notch! Smaller stage performers were all solid, but not our taste in music. Western Caribbean itinerary was fairly standard: Half Moon Cay, Falmouth Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel. HMC was very enjoyable. Falmouth was badly overcrowded with limited options, and our shore excursion (VIP Bamboo Beach Club) was a 3 hour bus ride round-trip for 3 hours on the beach... with big crowds, no umbrellas/shade, and friendly but slow food and bar service. Grand Cayman was also very crowded, but pleasant. Cozumel was fairly routine, biggest thing of note was the later arrival time (as scheduled) with a late departure allowing dinner in port. More kids than normal on a HAL cruise due to it being a holiday sailing. I can see how people would describe a non-holiday sailing as feeling "slow-paced" and our sail had less planned activities for younger pax than would be found on Princess. Atrium featured a tree and gingerbread display that were both quite ornate and pretty! New internet packages are expensive, social package is $14.99/day and only allows 200 mb on a handful of "allowed" social media sites (no email or general browsing!) Disembarkation was smooth and routine. I'll happily consider HAL for a future cruise, along with Princess and X, and I put $ down on a future cruise credit too. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was an extension of one organized by a group and we decided that we should spend another two weeks on the ship. We are experienced cruisers (more than 20) and we decided that we wanted to use the ship as a luxury hotel rather than a way of seeing tourist attractions in the Caribbean. The inside and the outside of the ship are beautiful. The traditional black hull and white superstructure and the strong and pointed bough are beautiful to look at. The ship was immaculate on the outside decks and beautifully designed on the inside. There was not a crewmember with whom we interacted who deserved less than excellent rating. We had a few meals in the main dining room because we had a Neptune suite that entitled us to use the Pinnacle Grill. Even if you have one or two meals at the Grill you will find the service and the cuisine excellent. The dining room, where we had seven dinners was okay, but not great. We found the Lido grill noisy and that the combination of dozens of different foods created a smell that was not pleasant for us. We love classical music and there was an opportunity to hear it on the ship and while the comedian was not to our taste, the magician was fantastic. When there were problems, the ship's crew did an excellent job in solving them. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it had: a bathtub, full circle teak promenade, shuffleboard, a roof over the Lido pool, good dining reviews, cruisers our own age (lack of children), and excellent music. The Lincoln Center musicians were brilliant. The B.B. King Blues Club was OUTSTANDING!!! We usually went to two shows a night and had a ball. All our meals in the MDR were delicious, with one exception, the onion soup. That was insipid, tasteless, and had only 3 onion shards. The Lido buffet always spoiled us with so many alluring choices. Room service was prompt with a nice variety of options. And it's FREE! Our verandah balcony cabin was spacious and well appointed. I now love the Elemis products. Our favorite activity was the thermal suite with a large whirlpool and heated ceramic beds. These were very therapeutic for my husband, who was making a slow recovery from surgeries. It made him feel terrific and very close to normal. He danced every night at the Blues Club! All staff were accommodating, attentive, and always busy. We didn't go into the ports. We came to relax, and we did! We disembarked in Cozumel and headed inland. Easy disembarkation with immigration and customs officials who came on board to meet us. The embarkation was fast and smooth. Golly, it was a wonderful cruise!-. Now we want to try more HAL ships, doesn't matter where they're going! I should add that we booked the cruise directly with HAL. Their agent discussed cabins with us and selected a winner. We want the same cabin next time. Read Less

However we decided to try something different for our birthdays (just three days apart). The Oosterdam did not disappoint! Everything was awesome, from the amazing service to the great food, to the terrific verandah stateroom. We are already looking forward to booking our next cruise, with HAL. Getting on and off the ship was easy and quick. When we embarked in FLL we were on the ship within an hour of arriving at just after 11 am. The ship was beautiful, certainly not new but definitely clean and well-appointed. The Pinnacle Grill was our favourite restaurant with fantastic service and really great steak. We found the wine selection to be very good. The ship draws an older crowd but we much prefer that over a “party boat” or tons of kids in the pool area. Our cabin stewards Purr and Ono were simply fantastic, always helpful and really upbeat. An all-round awesome first cruise experience! Read Less

We sailed on the Oosterdam Nov. 17-24, western Caribbean. This was our first time with Holland America having travelled with a variety of other lines. Boarding the ship was well organized but we were really surprised to be able to access our cabin immediately. Every other cruise line we have travelled with, we learned that cabins would not be available for 2-3 hours after boarding. The oceanview cabin was relatively spacious and had lots of closet and storage space. The bathroom, with a tub/shower combination, was much more comfortable than some other tiny, barely-fit-in-the-shower experiences we have had. The beds were so comfortable that I’d bring one home and replace our current, expensive mattress. Some reviews I had read worried me that this ship would present as old and needing some face-lifts. What we found instead was classic, elegant and refined. Every public space was like a very high-end hotel. The bars were truly relaxing areas to have a drink and enjoy private conversation in quiet environments. I was led to believe that very senior citizens are the primary clientele of Holland America but this was not at all the case on this trip. There was a broad range of ages, including some families with children. Perhaps most surprising, the pool areas were never clogged with people. We could always find deck chairs together as opposed to finding dozens of empty chairs with towels left on them for hours at a time. We have cruised on one of the new mega ships and will never do that again. Food is a very personal thing to comment on. In this area, I found the main dining room at the same level as most other cruises we have experienced, i.e., lots of high notes with some missed steps. Fish is a challenge when the kitchen is preparing so many dishes at a time and on 2 occasions, the fish was over cooked. There were some examples of potatoes that were like small pucks. The steak and lobster dishes were very well done. Service was attentive, water glasses kept filled, drinks replenished and coffee/tea always offered. Desserts were average. We did anytime dining and never waited more than 3-5 minutes for the 5 of us to be seated. When eating in the Lido, we were able to find seating without too much wandering around, even at the busiest times. Our room attendants were the best we have experienced. They were always cheerful, always had time to chat and never made us feel that they were looking for tips. This was also true of all other personnel on the ship, never walking past guests in silence, smiling and helping out in any way they could. The level of service that we experienced was exceptional. Our thanks to all. On all other cruises, the hallways were always crowded in the morning as the attendants raced to do up the rooms. On this ship, we never saw laundry baskets in the halls or cleaning supplies and vacuums. Several of us love cooking and were pleased that America’s Test Kitchen offers demonstration classes during the cruise. A stand-out feature for the musicians in our group was the on-board professional quintet - piano and strings. They presented several concerts and their playing was at a very high standard. I would plead with Holland America to enclose this performance space, a portion of one wall is open to a hallway and some guests, in spite of signs asking for quiet, have not learned to use their indoor voices. Glass could cover the open area and largely solve this issue and be respectful of the artists. When the ship arrived back in Ft. Lauderdale, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the cabin as we were in no rush to disembark. We walked off with our bags at 10 a.m. and had no issues. We look forward to travelling with Holland America again. Read Less

We've sailed a number of times with Holland; the Oosterdam and were pleased. The Barcelona embarkation was easy and we went straight to our cabin. The ship is older but it was well maintained. Captain and Cruise Director Kelly were very good with plenty of information to share. MDR food and service were excellent with gourmet selections and presentations. Lido could have been better, i.e., first full day at sea and tables were not cleared for more guests. We enjoyed the BB King Blues band. Excellent performers. Lincoln Center Stage had an amazing Quintet. They played a variety of music from classics, popular, and movie themes. Our favorite venue was the Gallery Bar. The staff were warm and friendly and the gaming room was a really nice HAL addition. They had board games, darts, chess boards, etc. Very comfortable room to spend the evening in. America's Test Kitchen was another highlight with an entertaining chef who had great recipes and cooking tips. Most of our excursions were booked through HAL and I'm glad I did. Yes, a little more $$, but always well organized and on time. You meet in the theatre and are escorted off the ship and directly to your tour bus. So convenient. Disembarkation in Ft. Lauderdale was slow, but only for fewer custom's agents and five other ships in port. This was the first time I used the spa services. Very good experience with just a small up-sell speech. Ladies, pack a sweater: Air conditioning left public venues very cold Great service. Great cruise. Read Less

We enjoyed a very nice 12 day cruise on the Oosterdam. We took a water taxi direct from our Venice hotel to the ship, so easy. Embarkation was a snap. Our aft cabin was clean and spacious and our cabin stewards Edy and Oman were very gracious and helpful. We would have liked a Tamarind on board for a 12 day voyage so we dined at Pinnnacle Grill five nights. Katalin was our server for three nights and she made a huge difference. The MDR food and service was actually pretty good. One night we dined in Canaletto and it was just ok. The Lido and room service breakfasts were very good. Entertainment was decent with B.B. Kings and a couple shows. HAL still lags behind the competition in this department. Overall service was outstanding. Everyone was always ready to help and always greeted us with a warm smile. You can really feel the genuine and sincere hospitality from top to bottom on this ship. We enjoyed all ports visited but unfortunately we missed Mykonos due to a rare hurricane in the Mediterranean. We had some rough seas for a couple days getting away from the storm. All in all, it was another enjoyable cruise with HAL. Read Less

We loved pretty much everything about the cruise, despite being caught in bad weather (like, hurricane level bad weather) that made us miss one port and bounced us around for a few days. The crew was amazing, the food was excellent, the ports were better than I could hae ever imagined, embarkation and disembarkation was a breeze, even the shopping surpassed our expectations. My only real complaint is the spa. I went for a polish change (very reasonable cost to do this), ended up getting an upgrade to polish that would last longer but I was assured would come off easily once I was home. Well,l it didn't. I'm now trying to grow it off because it is too damaging to get off in a salon. Also, the entire manicure experience was an up-sell session. My advice would be to skip the spa. Just a money grab. We also had a bit of trouble getting our dining table sorted but that was a bit of live and learn experience. In future I would do anytime dining if you want interesting conversation. I would definitely cruise with HAL again. Read Less

We have sailed with Holland America lots of times. Excellent Company, Staff Excellent, Service Excellent. In fact everything was excellent. We had to leave the ship a day early to attend our Grandson's Funeral. A beautiful vase of Flowers appeared in our Suite on the second day along with a beautiful letter. Our flight was not until 10pm and officially we had to leave the ship at 2pm. However, the wonderful staff especially Mila (Guest Services Manager helped us to stay on board until 6pm and then personally and with other staff escorted us from the ship, carried all our luggage and even called a taxi to the Airport. There are no words to express how well we were looked after the whole of the cruise and we shall we returning to the Oosterdam next year for an Alaska Cruise. We are looking forward to meeting Mila and all her staff again. Thank you so much we will never forget the care and kindness. Read Less

We had an absolutely amazing cruise on Holland America Oosterdam on September 9th – the 12-night Mediterranean Tapestry We loved the service on the ship, the size of the ship and our fellow passengers. Everyone was so nice! The cruise director was front and center throughout the cruise and we felt there were many activities offered although this was a very port-heavy cruise and our priority was being in port and experiencing everything that Europe has to offer. I know many people on Cruise Critic choose to take their own shore excursions, but I do have to say that EXC Tours absolutely MADE our time in port AMAZING! EXC tours were absolutely wonderful. Our tour guides were experts in each port. All of them full of enthusiasm. We were taken to the best places to see highlights of each port and, for the tours that included meals – we loved each restaurant and the food and wine offered. We were extremely happy that we booked through EXC tours because we did not have to stress about making it back to the ship on time – we could relax, enjoy and focus learning as much as we could about each port offered. We also enjoyed the ports where we just walked around and explored and sat at a café and had cappuccino that turned into cocktails and a relaxing fun day. I do agree that the ship is a bit older, but thankfully, we were there to enjoy ourselves and let little things put a damper on a fabulous European tour. I’ve read many complaints that the ship is in horrible condition and was very worried before we went, but once the cruise was underway, I had an unforgettable time and it didn’t matter! I would ignore the naysayers and form your own opinion and just ENJOY yourselves. We were very happy that we booked a Veranda cabin – we loved going on the Veranda every morning and sail away. Definitely worth the extra money! We did not purchase a beverage package. We brought two bottles of wine on board, attended a shore excursion to a winery in Nice where we were able bring on another bottle of wine onboard without the corkage fee and attended the happy hours. At happy hour, we would order a bucket of corona for around $29 plus gratuity and the next bucket was $10 plus gratuity. We also had wine at lunch with many of our shore excursions. Our bar bill at the end of a 12-day cruise was only around $200. Definitely glad we did not purchase the $1200 signature beverage package. I will say that, because this was such a port heavy cruise, heavy drinking was not a priority but we still drank and enjoyed ourselves. Who wants to be hungover when you are touring Rome? We did enjoy many glasses of wine with lunch in Rome but did not start out the day hung over from the night before bc we were trying to get our money’s worth from our beverage package, if that makes sense. The crew was very hospitable and the captain ran a very efficient and safe ship. I also appreciated the use of hand sanitizer before each embarkation. We experienced no illnesses whatsoever on the ship. We loved being waiting on in the main dining room – a highlight for my husband. Just choosing each meal and taking our time over dessert with coffee. It was such an amazing experience! I LOVE the direction of Holland America – outstanding service, port emersions, amazing EXC tours, a place for foodies and music lovers! Already booked our next cruise! As my husband said, this wasn’t a vacation – this was a TRIP! Thank you, Holland America, for the best trip of our lives!!!! Read Less

We took the Venice to Barcelona itinerary in Aug/Sep 2018 and we loved this ship! The size was perfect for us. It was easy to get from one end to the other and the ship was in great shape. The food in the main dining room was the best we’ve had on any Holland America ship. The filets were nice and thick and cooked to perfection and the variety each evening was wonderful. And as on all our HAL cruises, the service was impeccable! Even though this ship was smaller than our favorites, the Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam, we really enjoyed every aspect of it. We definitely recommend this ship if you’re looking for a midsize, well appointed ship. Our only disappointment was the changes made to the Crows Nest. It just isn’t as inviting as it used to be and the Explorers Cafe only had a few, very limited, options for danish. Read Less

Before the cruise, we had the 2 day package in Venice that came with being in a Signature Suite. On my own, I’m not sure I would have chosen the Bonvecchiati Hotel, but its location was perfect and the room was fine. Transfers were handled by HAL and went off without a hitch. Embarkation was very fast with priority Mariner status. We liked the ship a lot. Our cabin was great but it had a lot of noise from people walking on the pool deck above, carts being pushed, chairs scraping, people dropping things, etc. It didn’t keep us awake at night but it was fairly constant. Our neighbors were smoking on their balcony despite the smoking ban. The cabin and the balcony were large, the bathroom was big with a bathtub and a separate shower and 2 sinks. I loved the nightlight in the bathroom. Our stewards were excellent and were able to quickly fix a blocked drain. You can stream movies on the TV but you can’t check your cabin account, order room service or order shore excursions (you have to use the app). AC worked well and there was good storage space. There was norovirus on the ship but not many people got it. The crew seemed to do a really good job of keeping it from spreading. This might be the best cruise ship buffet I’ve seen. The variety was good and the food was actually hot. Don’t miss the nights they do the giant antipasto spread and the international desserts – gorgeous displays with tons of choices. I was not impressed with Dive In. The food takes a long time, isn’t particularly hot, and is it's just average grill food. Also, the hot dogs are too salty. Service in the DR was excellent and the food was very good, although they are pretty skimpy with the vegetables. If the menu says your protein comes with Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes, expect one Brussels sprout and one bite of potato. Entertainment on this ship was excellent. The production shows were terrific and the singers had good voices. The dueling piano players were great. BB Kings All Stars were terrific and really talented, but the volume was so loud I couldn’t sit in the lounge. If they had turned it down, I would have gone every night, but it was painfully loud. We went to a few of the lectures, which we enjoyed, but didn’t take part in other daytime activities. Shore excursions were very expensive but well run. Twice our tender pilots didn’t seem to know where the pier was. Disembarkation was very fast (we got off early with our suitcases). Overall, we loved the ship, had a great (if somewhat noisy) cabin, and thought the crew were great. The food, entertainment and service were all excellent. Good job, HAL! Read Less

My husband and I had a fantastic cruise on Holland America, the Greek Odyssey 16 August - 27 August 2018. The embarkation, sailing and disembarkation was amazingly perfect. The crew and ship were amazing. We would like to thank the following crew for their exceptional customer service - Puput from Lido, Su Mantra, Gusti and Jonathan at level 2 fine dining for table 61 and our exceptional cabin crew of Andy and Astrid. They all go well above and beyond the call of duty and made our holiday very special. The entertainment was really great as well and filled our holiday with fun and enjoyment. We would definitely go again with Holland America. The selected ports were perfect and the opportunity to sail into them was breath taking. The shore excursions organised from the ship were by absolute precision and made our holiday that much easier and special. Everything went smoothly. Thanks so much Holland and America and your amazing dedicated crew. Read Less
