We chose this cruise for a "get out of winter" vacation. Have been on the Serenade before but noticed some things that have changed. It was obvious they are trying to save $$ to put into the new big ships coming down the pike. There was less staff in the main dining room and some wait staff you could tell were new. They all were rushing around and sometimes forgetting things. No time to talk to the guests too long! I have to agree with another reviewer; the first night we had a crab legs appetizer in the shells. But no way to get the meat out of the shell. I asked for a little fork and the waiter said he would try & find me one but I never got it. The Windjammer staff was more relaxed and helpful. We signed up for the Chef's Table for our embarkation night but they called and asked if we could go the following night which was fine with us. Don't they keep track of their reservations?! But it turned out we were there with just one other nice couple which allowed us to interact with the Chef more. We also ate in Giavonni's which was good and enjoyed Izumi although it was hard to find. The food in the dining room was mediocre most of the time and one night we didn't even want anything on the menu. There were other "newbies" at Guest Services and in the Spa/salon. The Diamond Club was too small for the number of Diamond guests on board. We usally had to order drinks and take our appetizers out to the bigger area. There was a sliding door to provide more space but they said they weren't allowed to open it. The D-Lounge staff was great and friendly despite being rushed and manuevering in such a small area. The got plenty of extra tips! The ship itself is showing her age and needs some updating. We had a very small balcony cabin on deck 8 which was dated but clean. Our cabin steward was fantastic. But no small soaps, shampoo or other niceties. Just generic body wash in the small shower. No chocolates on the pillow when you come back to the cabin. The entertainment was mostly 1 man shows. We didn't go to any shows. The ports were good. We mostly did our own thing. Took the ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John but the hurricane must have hit them hard. There was not much there. Had two be beach days. one at St. Croix and one at St. Maarten. Rainbow beach at St. Croix was affected by the hurricane so that there was mostly rock as you entered the water. Our "Shore Excursion" beach trip didn't start off well in St. Maarten. We had to wait almost an hour for the vendor to come pick us up. But we got extra time at the venue and chair side service if we wanted drinks for food. Beach was good. We had never been to Martinique so we just walked the town. Stopped in a large mall and farmers market. Everyone says they will now take American $$ but they do it reluctantly and don't want you to give them small change. They will either round up or give you Euros as change. I recommend you bring a few Euros if the ships continue to go there. It is a beautiful island and the people are trying to be more friendly although if you don't speak a little French, you will have a hard time. We had lunch at Mamma's in the farmers market which was delicious. All in all it was a relaxing cruise and we met our goal of getting out of the cold weather but were met with snow when we got back... Read Less

We chose this cruise, because we needed to get away and all of our previous cruises with Royal Caribbean have been great! In general we had a great time, the waiters, cabin service were fantastic. We paid for a room with a balcony for a view, which was tainted with a work ladder obstructing our view, and we were not told about this when booking our cruise. I would go again, but I think I want to stick to the next size up ships. The entertainment is better, the eating places stay open later, and the promenade is great. On the smaller ships, dinning is over at 8:30PM, the entertainment is of a lesser quality...maybe to be expected because they are not entertaining as many people. We traveled as an older couple. There were children on the cruise and they did seem to be having a good time. Children did not disturb us in anyway. We planned to spend the day we left the ship in Ft Lauderdale touring Ft Lauderdale. We were lucky to get a shuttle to the airport. We had intended to rent a car, but could not get transportation of any kind to get to the car rental. We ended up spending the whole day in the airport. Not fun!!! Ft Lauderdale is a large airport and not handling its traffic well. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the low cost, the company, and the trip destinations. Our room was kept very well clean and the attendant was very nice and worked hard. Our main dinning room waiter and asst. waiter worked hard to get what we wanted, however, we ran into three problems. One we waited too long between servings because I believe they had to many tables to cover. Two, I was upset that I chose my time dinning and was force pretty much to make a reservation each day or wait forever to get in.I know I didn't have that problem on another cruise company.Third and this got me upset is when a cruise line tells you how much to tip and when you decide to pay cash so you can see if the people working for you earned it, the cruise line then takes the money from those people and spreads it over people that didn't even work for you. I found this out on their website after cruising. And as usual all the tours were overpriced for what you got in value and time spent. So now that I have told about the problems, we still had a good cruise because of the service, destinations and the warm weather. Read Less

We've been on the Serenade several years ago on a Mediterranean cruise (R/T Barcelona with Cannes, Florence, Naples, Rome, Venice, Ravenna, and Dubrovnik as the ports ). The ship is just the right size for us. The dates and ports were good as there were two new ports (St. Croix and Martinique) and favorite old ports: St. Thomas, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten. We also like the Solarium pool area, where we spent most of our on board time.. The dining in the Windjammer is great with the circular counters so you never are really standing on a long line. The Centrum was very popular and mostly extremely difficult to find seating. We often observed the Centrum activities from deck nine where we had our cabin. Wish that the Centrum was a bit larger with more seating on decks four and five. All in all a lovely ship and a great cruise. Read Less

I am Diamond Plus and received a 300 cabin credit (issued on a Fall cruise in 2017) for this cruise. Could not pass it up and so I got out of winter weather at home. I prefer the Transatlantic (take this twice a year) for the activities and entertainment. This cruise was so so. People cruising the Atlantic for at least 12 days are more friendly and have interesting stories of their cruising and home town stories. The ports of call did not really interest me as I have been to the Caribbean ten times of more. My cabin was really nice with a window, however the window was above the head of the bed so I could only enjoy the sun shine and was not able to see outside. The purpose of a window is to see what is going on outside when you are in port. I am booked for April 2018, a Transatlantic cruise and October 2018 also a Transatlantic cruise. The entertainment was NOT so entertaining on this cruise but I guess I am spoiled with Trans crossing. Read Less

We booked this cruise when we were on board last year because we really liked the itinerary. Embarkation was very quick and leaving the ship was very smooth as well. Everything was as good as last year except for service in the bars. It took noticeably longer to get a drink on virtually every occasion due to not enough service staff. That wasn't a problem last January so I can only assume they have cut back on staff. They were all working so hard but when you get someone in front of you that is ordering several cocktails which take time, and all you want is a beer or a glass of wine it is very frustrating! Entertainment was as good as last year and we particularly enjoyed Jimmy in the crown and castle pub - he was absolutely fantastic. We went in there as often as we could after seeing the main show in the theatre. We haven't booked another cruise at the moment with Royal Caribbean as unfortunately they don't offer the itinerary we want next. We want Cartagena and partiial panama canal transit. We will certainly be booking another cruise at some point in the future. Read Less

Are embarkation at Fort Lauderdale was extremely easy. We had no lines and walked right on the ship. Our room was ready by 1 or 1:30. Our cabin was on the 9th floor near the Centrum. Our Steward was fabulous. We had a balcony cabin and besides the small bathroom, everything was good. We had breakfast in the dining room, and it was never crowded. Generally we had lunch in the Windjammer and never had a problem finding a place to sit. The dining room was not very crowded and our servers were very attentive to our table. The food was good, especially the beef and lamb. Entertainment was average, a comedian, juggler, musician and the staff singers and dancers. I was disappointed at the quality of the staff dancers costuming. It could be updated. The activities ranged from dance classes to scrapbook making. There was time to be busy and plenty of time to relax. All the staff members were very professional, the ship was immaculate and the ports were great. We did not take any tours offered by the ship but did take independent tours while in Port. We felt safe at all the ports. Disembarkation was smooth and fast. From the time we were called to disembark to obtaining a cab to the airport took about 20 minutes. Excellent. Read Less

The ship is in need of a good cleaning and updating. The size is just about perfect to get from one venue to another. It was easy to get around. I hate buffets and even the dining room breakfast was a buffet although the waiter would bring the food to you. All breakfasts were the same. The waiter at night pushed items at us even when we said no. He even asked us to "remember him" at the end of the cruise. Food was good, but nothing really special or out of the ordinary. I tried many of the fish items which were good to excellent. The entertainment was good, but the ship's band tended to be too loud for the other singers and musicians. One comedian got a little blue for the early show. Our room steward was amazing. He went out of his way to greet us every time we saw him. He kept our room so neat and clean. Loved our towel pets each night. I missed the informative lectures about each port. Only shopping was mentioned and that's about the same across the Caribbean. Would have loved to hear about the flora and fauna and history of each island before we landed. The movies were excellent, but the venue was small and twice there was not enough seating for everyone. Went on this ship with many friends. Not my favorite ship as layout is not good, no room in Centrum, Vintages very open so no ambiance, Izumi excellent food but very strange location. Very small areas for Diamond Club and Concierge. Specialty restaurants are excellent, service all ovthe ship is above and beyond. Excellent ports and excursions. Enjoyed it so much I am returning next month.we so loved the ports, Curacao my favorite. Did the Sunset Harbor cruise and throughly enjoyed it, after a day exploring on our own. Antigua not my favorite but did a very nice rum tasting tour through the ship, very good. The entertainment was very good, especially the two performances by Jimmy Hopper, he was so entertaining. Did a performance in Centrum and every floor eas fill all the way up in the Centrum..a must see. The staff and crew are excellent and provide excellent service and make for a wonderful cruise experience. Read Less

Chose this cruise for the itinerary and therefore the Excellent rating. Prefer the Freedom or Oasis class ships and still do. Missed the Promenade rather than the Centrum. Must say the food was excellent in the Windjammer and Main Dining. Cabin attendant was great. Main Dining Waiter was ok but his assistant was excellent. Did not try any of the specialty dining. Personally feel the price of alcoholic drinks have gotten out of hand. We are Diamond and found the Diamond Lounge very inadequate for the number of Diamond members on board this cruise trying to attend the happy hour from 4:30-8 pm. As Diamond, you are also offered the option of 3 free alcoholic drinks per member from the other bars throughout the ship during this time frame. Previous cruises there were few except premium labels. Now when you go to a bar you are given the choice of drinks printed on the "Crown and Anchor Happy Hour 4:30-8 pm" menu. That was surprising. Carpet in our cabin had been pieced in many places. Not sure what took place on this ship in the October dry dock. Still loyal to Royal. Read Less
