Hawaii cruise We have sailed many times before and so wanted to go to Hawaii We now live in Costa Blanca Spain and travelled Via Las Vegas for the new year so there were many filghts and days involved to reach our enbarcation point at San Pedros' Pier Los Angeles. We are now Platinum level with Princess cruises with the appropriate badges but we failed to recieve correct instructions to board the ship and had to trail around making further inquiries in order to get aboard quickly. Once aboard we found our stateroom and soon after one of our cases and one other with our name on but was not ours we informed the cabin attendant who removed the wrongly place case and thought that our case would soon arrive after several hours waiting for it I had to go to the reception deck to inquire about it. My suitcase, properly named and tagged was in a large pile of other suitcases going nowhere it would seem that you would have to go,as i did, to collect your own. Aged 77, and having travelled halfway around the world, the last thing you want to do is drag your suitcase around a very large ship whilst all the time thinking is this what you get in the Platinum grade Do it yourself ! On arriving in our stateroom we were surprised not to find a Princess Patter which tell you what's on and where to go, when I inquired I was told it was on an app no mention of this in the cabin or elsewhere, also there was not a small diagram of the ship deck layout and which had been handed out on prevoius Princess ships so again I had to go and ask. Princess do not now give receipts for drinks purchases and therefore no signing occurs I was waiting for my final bill statement to arrive on our last night in order to check it, this did not happen, no statement given, out so you do not know what you are being charged for. On my arrival back home I have made inquiries about my bill and as yet have not received an answer. Please be aware of this fact on your last night and print your bill as nobody will tell you and you will get no response to your enquiries. We enjoyed the ship, entertainment, and the cruise but booked shore excursions with other agents as we now find they are better value for money. This was the first time that we have had such a troublesome boarding and no final account on any previous cruise ship. We have sailed on the Regal Princess and everything was just wonderful so we will be using Princess cruises again and hoping for better things. Read Less

With retirement nearing, we (my wife and I) choose this cruise to better understand the experience of 4 or 5 sea days in a row (we are considering some extended cruises in the future), as well as the experience of travelling with a group with a signficant amount of retirees. We have previously spent some time in the Islands (via air), so site seeing was not our main priority. Princess has been our choice for cruising for some time, and this trip did not disappoint. The service, food and entertainment were a good value for the money. In fact, we found the entertainment to be noticeably more appealing than on some of our recent Princess cruises. Our one quibble was that each photograph now costs $25.00 each- which seemed high to us. The ship was newly refurbished and we appreciated the enhancements- both in the cabin and around the ship. Some of the little touches, such as a place beside your bed to charge your iPhone, showed us that Princess really cares about staying competitive. (Note: I do own CCL common stock, and have so for many years). As mentioned earlier, sightseeing was not our primatry objective, but we did take Princess tours on the big island and the garden island. We did attend the onboard lectures by Sharon, which were very informative, and very well done. Read Less

This was our first Princess cruise. We took this cruise to get a taste of the Hawaiian Islands. Transported to cruise port from airport by Princess in a bus. This went well . We were later getting on the ship, so the embarkation went quickly. Cabin was ready when we boarded. We took our carry ons with us so we could change when we boarded. We went to the Buffet the first night as we were tired from travelling. We found the food excellent with few problems with line ups. The weather was cool and the sea rougher the first few days. The first night was not restful as there was an emergency medical helicopter evacuation late. Things improved after the first couple of days. We chose the open dining option and usually ate around 6 pm. Rarely were there any lineups . The dining selection was good and service was usually prompt. there was one disturbing incident when a member of our dining party was served coffee in a cup hot enough to blister her finger. I did not realize coffee cups were put into a warmer. Please be careful with coffee cups. When we arrived in Hilo we shared a rental car to tour the island. Rental was 70. Ended up taking a taxi to and from the airport for the Rental as the shuttles were busy and sparse. 20 each way. Travelled to the volcanic park checked out lava tunnel and the lava flow to the coast. Rainbow falls was pretty but not dramatic. Next stop Honolulu. We did the NE island tour with the ship. It was interesting. Next Kauai where we took the open bus tour from the shopping mall . Caught the early 10.30 ride. Driver gave a good narration. Walked across the street from the mall , checked out the Hotels, walked to the pier then shuttled back from the mall to the ship. Maui was the last stop , hot and humid. Shopped and took the city bus along the coast . Stopped at the Hotels along the coast and checked out the lavish tropical gardens. 5 days at sea , just relaxed and took in the entertainment. Ensenada was a shopping stop , walked to the shopping area for the exercise, but it is a long walk. The worst part was the line up to board the ship since the brought 3 or 4 buses back at same time. Back to LA . Disembarkation and transport to the airport was well organized. Overall good trip and would do Princess again. Read Less

Chose Cruise on Star Princess because it sailed over Christmas and New Years (12/19/17 - 1/3/2018) and it was supposed to be a leisurely 15 day trip to Hawaii (we have taken this cruise 2 other times.) and we enjoy the sea days and getting off the ship in each port. We drove to San Pedro a day early and stayed at the Double Tree Hotel using their Stay and Park plan. This was a good hotel, great staff, good restaurant.Parking and hotel transportation to and from hotel was perfect. Embarkation went very smoothly. Disembarkation was the best we have ever experienced. We were Platinum Members and had Club Class Mini Suite - so we met in a separate restaurant for priority disembarkation. Very smooth and fast. We were very disappointed in the Star Princess. It went into dry dock just prior to our sailing. It had undergone some refurbishing. Our cabin, a Club Class Mini Suite (D403) we thought would be upgraded (the rack rate for Club Class Mini Suite is approx. $1,400 extra per person) with all the "extras" for this class. It was not. Their was no upgraded bathroom amenities - no plush robe etc. The carpet was stained - the couch old, broken down and not very clean. There were chips in some of the furniture and cabinets and the hair dryer was broken and the cord tangled and frayed. The bed was very uncomfortable (although the bedding was very nice and new). The cabin steward was very good and our cabin was kept clean and tidy. The staff on the ship were very helpful and friendly - especially our two waiters (Walvya Andri Bagja and Rodel Cayeta. Most of our meals were in the Portofino Dining Room in their Club Class area. The meals were very good - very nice presentations and overall tasty food with great service. The only complaint was the meat dishes - steaks, prime rib, and veal were always tough. They need to upgrade the quality of their meat. The other dishes were very good - especially the desserts! Also the dining area for Club Class was quite small and cramped - needs to be a larger area. The shows were good and the major presentations with the dancers were well done with many colorful costume changes. One of the comedians was very funny. Unfortunately there were so many people on this cruise that if you wanted a seat you had to arrive an hour early and wait for the shows to begin. The Naturalist Lecturer, Sharon Faff was Excellent. One of the best we have ever listened to - she really knows her "stuff". The internet café is up to date and the internet connections worked very well on this cruise. Miguel was very helpful and friendly and was able to take care of any problems that came up in the Internet Café. There was too much selling on this cruise, especially by a vendor - EFFY JEWELRY ! All day and evening for the entire cruise it was sell, sell, sell with EFFY. Very disrupting and too much over kill. It was almost as if this was a cruise sponsored by EFFY. Also there was too much selling by Princess - one would think you were in a department store with all the sales going on. Because this was a Christmas/New Year's Cruise the ship was overbooked (approx. 2,800 passengers) and children and teens were running all over the ship and quite disruptive. Running up and down the halls, knocking on doors, plugging up key locks etc.It difficult for the staff to control this. Would we go again? Not over a holiday and not on this big a ship. Read Less

This was our first time taking a Princess cruise and chose it because of the itinerary. Though the ship has had some refurbishments, I think that it could still be modernized in some areas. I will say that this was by far the easiest embarkation and disembarkation process that I have ever experienced. I wish other cruise lines would take notice and implement this best practice. Every staff member that we encountered were friendly and offered us great service throughout the cruise. Pro's: Great service Clean Itinerary Hardly any children Cabin's were spacious with large closet areas Con's: Was not all that impressed with the food/menu options Ship not as modern as others that I have been on Entertainment was just okay, but did love the band in the Explorer Lounge Overall, I would definitely recommend this cruise. Take the behind the scenes ship tour if you can. You have to sign up at the Guest Services Desk when you first board, as they only have room for 14 people. We signed up on the second day of the cruise and got the last two spots. Read Less

This was our 7th cruise with Princess. I would never go with them again. The food was terrible. Menu not the same as in previous years. The BUFFET ( horizon court) the hot entrees were awful. Everything looked and no doubt was leftovers from the main dining room menus. Nothing was recognizable. Just slow thrown in with a watery substance. Main dining room menu. There was always a staple to choose from, like filet mignon. Not anymore. After a 15 day trip we were served steak twice. Everyone sent theirs back. It was tough. It was sirloin tip. There was no BROADWAY STYLE SHOWS in the theatre. Years ago the entertainment was great. The same entertainers rotated around the ship for different venues. Overall, it was extremely boring. The same on the PATTER every day. After 15 days, we were anxious to get off the ship. Too much focus was on trying to sell overpriced clothing...in the outlet, jewlerry and t-shirts. Read Less

We booked the cruise to spend the holidays doing what we love to do...cruise. But the ship is really showing wear and tear and needs more care than it received in the dry dock. The carpet in the public areas needs to be re-streached or replaced. Some chairs had been recovered but some not. However, the staff made it a fun time. They were always cheery, happy and seamed to really love their jobs. The cabin we were assigned was in a good location for either the central elevators or the aft elevators. That made getting places easy. Our weather cruising over was not the greatest but coming back was mostly fine. If you are planning on a Hawaii cruise, pack for cold weather. When we arrived at the Big Island, there was snow on the volcanoes! The ship seemed to be at a cold tempture all the time so most people wore jackets! Read Less

This cruise served as a great get away. The Star Princess staff and crew were top-notch, friendly and warm welcoming to us. The food and entertainment were exceptional. We were, however, bombarded with constant ads from Effy and the Park West Auctions. Princess can save tons of paper and trees by posting these events in their daily Patter. Passengers need to be warned about the art auctions. We did not sign any paperwork for a raffle won, which, in fact, cost a mere $35.00 for their shipping costs. When we discovered a charge placed on our account as we were leaving the ship ( it wasn't posted two days earlier), we confronted the art auction sales team and asked them to remove the charge (they promised to do this two days earlier). They said we had signed for the "free" art work; the truth of the matter they could not locate any signed documents. They insisted we take the "free" artwork but we refused. Passenger beware of any art auctions held on the Princess ships. Otherwise, we enjoyed a great Captain, a great Cruise Director and a wonderful Christmas/New Years cruise to Hawaii. Read Less

This was my second cruise on Princess to Hawaii. It proved to be one of the best I have ever taken. The Star Princess had just left dry dock where the new sea witch was painted on the hull along with re-carpeting of common areas and replacement of the furniture in Horizon Court. Furniture in the Wheel House and other venues, International Café was also improved. The one thing I was most looking forward to was the new bedding in all cabins. That was the only item that was less than perfect for me. New linens were very nice but the mattress was very soft and left me with a soar back some mornings. I can't say enough about the service and food that we received. This was my first cruise as an Elite Captains Circle member. The stocked mini bar was a wonderful perk. I didn't take advantage of the free laundry as just doing some pieces in the laundromat proved more efficient and quicker. The cruise was completely sold out and we received notice that the ships laundry might take as long as 3 days to get back. Still this was not a problem for us. Our room steward was outstanding and all the staff I interacted with and even those I just passed in the halls smiled and seemed engaged with making the cruise a success. We had an excellent mini suite on deck 8, Cabin E729. I've posted pictures, The balcony was superb. I really enjoyed every stop in Hawaii. Even with being in Honolulu on Christmas Day being able to stay in port until 11:00 PM allowed for a day of sightseeing, Waikiki beach and a wonder luau show at the Hilton Hawaiian village. Cannot speak to the entertainment in the Vista Lounge or the Princess Theatre as we stayed mostly at the Wheelhouse bar and enjoyed the gym, Sauna and our great cabin balcony. Passengers on this cruise consisted of a mixed group with it being the Christmas break. Many more children, teens and young families than on any Cruise that I can remember. I saw no bad behavior or other issues on this trip. One down side seemed to be the elevators. There of course was the expected wait due to the number of people on ship especially on deck 5-7. The problem was the slowness of the doors closing and the fact that one elevator was constantly getting stuck due to apparently too many people onboard. It always happened on the same elevator but it continued for the entire time of the cruise. I am a sea days lover so this was a perfect cruise to disconnect and power down. Wi fi was definitely not improved, slow as ever but that was not the ships fault. Water was a little choppy going to Hawaii but not anything unbearable and the weather was perfect in Hawaii at all Islands. Basically everything went off without a hitch for us. I was very satisfied with this cruise and will be taking a California Coastal in March. Read Less

Was it good value for money? Hard to say ... The itinerary was great and we were very luck to get hot, calm weather between LA and Honolulu. However, landing in Honolulu on Christmas day isn't ideal. Shops were only open in Waikiki, so it was overflowing with tourists. That said, it was probably our best day, due to the vibrancy. We walked around Diamond Head, swam at Waikiki Beach, shopped and had a drink and dinner on the balcony at the Hard Rock Cafe before heading back to the ship. The food was terrible. We've cruised with Princess before, so this was no surprise. Vegetarian choice limited to one dish (often slimy eggplant), on the evening menu, so we mostly ate in the buffet. And I still don't understand why you can't get a cheese sandwich until 3:30pm! Every cake looked the same. After trying a couple, I avoided them for the rest of the cruise. Peanut butter cookies were pretty good though. If you really wanted nice food, you needed to pay $29 pp per meal to eat in the Crown Grill. Our friends raved about it but those costs added up over 16 days. With no vegetarian items on the menu, we missed out on the really good stuff. There were a lot of return guests on the ship, with many saying they wouldn't do the cruise again, due to the quality of the food and entertainment. One woman had done 42 with Princess and told them this would be her last. Most of the staff were fantastic and worked amazingly hard but we did notice a few with attitude (not in a good way). The same mediocre entertainers were onboard for two weeks, which meant the shows were terrible and featured singers that really couldn't, so we stopped going. The Hawaiian ambassadors, Tiki Dave and Leialoha were great entertainers and teachers. As well as performing every night, Dave taught ukulele; Leialoha hula and lei making. Their students performed a concert on the last sea day, which was super fun to be part of. The best and hardest working entertainers on the ship by a country mile - Tiki Dave and Leialoha, rock! The gym was interesting ... with some aggressive people and not one staff member to be seen. Witnessed a fight between a woman who took exception to the length of time someone was on the weight machine she wanted to use. I stopped going after that, preferring instead to walk the decks. The highlight of the cruise was meeting awesome people. We made wonderful friends through the ukulele lessons and we're now in regular contact. So, yes, from that perspective it was worth the price (and more). Read Less
